Imagine a lioness's traitors, that would be unreal.
Yeah, that would be really good.
Claudia Winkleman wouldn't know what to do with herself.
She would love it.
Well, I've grown up around cats,
but this one cat that I actually trusted,
it jumped on my head in the night when I was sleeping
and started scratching at my face.
So after that happened...
That's insane.
Ask me what you think I left at home.
Your airbrush.
I didn't bring any knickers.
Wow, get down the shops, girl.
But if I came on and scored the winning goal in the final,
I think I'm going to do a back flip.
I think it's best that you do.
Yeah, I'll rush you next.
I'm not going to flibber me.
Hello and welcome to That Lioness' podcast, Connected by EE. I'm Harriet Rose and I am
very excited because the 20-25 euros has officially kicked off and we have managed to transport
our entire studio from St George's Park to the Lionesses camp right here in Zurich, which
means we are quite literally as close to the players as we possibly could be.
Coming up, we are going to be talking first impressions of the team's new home, how everybody's
settling in and getting the insider intel on what the hotel breakfast is saying because we really
like to focus on the important questions here. And today I am joined by Chloe Kelly and Jess Paz.
Welcome. Guys, how are you feeling? Touchdown in Switzerland.
Feeling good. The hotel is incredible. The girls are in good spirits. We had a family
day yesterday, so it was a nice send off from all our family and friends and to be in the
nice weather in Zurich is special.
And tell me what does a family day look like for you guys? Because for someone, obviously I have an experience
that I wanna know from your lens, what does it look like?
I think they can be different, but yesterday
it was really nice, because we just had
all our family's friends, my dogs came, which was great.
To Switzerland?
Or this was before you headed out?
No, this was before we headed out.
Before you headed out.
So it was kinda, the plan, it was like
family and friends like lunch
and then like send off. So it was just like basically really chilled day inside outside
vibes like barbecue vibes without a barbecue. Yeah, ice cream van. Yeah. Coffee van. Really nice.
Dogs, ice cream. Incredible. And now you're here. You obviously arrived here off the back of the
team winning 7-0 against Jamaica.
Has it kind of impacted the spirits in camp, do you think?
For sure. I think it was nice to have the lead in.
Training was really tough throughout the weeks that we've been at St.
George's and then the game for a send off in front of our home fans was really
special. So then going to Zurich and tournament football, it was a special way
to send us off
to the tournament and then our tournament heads then switched on and we're in to go now.
Yeah and his Royal Highness Prince William paid you a visit didn't he? That's pretty nuts isn't
it? Hi it's just Prince William to give you your match shirts that's mad. What was that like?
Well yeah it was a brilliant moment. I'd actually, the seven players whose first tournament it is,
got to have like a little meeting with him before, I guess,
like on tables, family, him.
We had like a nice chat across the tables.
He was sat next to me actually,
but my mom was just trying to get her little word in there
and ask a good question and she got it in
and I was dead proud of her.
My heart is killing.
She was proper like, I'm going to say my question and then she did it and I was like, go on mum.
What a moment for your family.
Yeah, incredible.
Were you really proud?
Yeah, definitely.
I think it's really nice, like we have special moments but to have the family involved in that is really special and a memory for them. Because we have quite a lot of special moments which we're always grateful for. I think we
sometimes can not see how special they are but then when your family are there to kind
of see it as well it kind of brings you down and you're like wow this is actually an incredible
moment and you know it already but it kind of like makes it even more special.
Well sometimes I think as humans in life we do need somebody else to ground us.
Because I kind of had that moment this morning when I woke up and I looked out the window and I was like, whoa, I'm here.
And you kind of need somebody sometimes, especially in your line of work where you are so focused on winning and pushing and going to just be like,
this is pretty cool.
Yeah.
Prince William is standing right there.
Like you need those bits, right?
I think so.
I think because in football and in sport in general, you're always looking for
the next game, the next competition, the next training session.
So actually enjoying a moment and actually reflecting.
I think the best way to do it is with family
and those around you to enjoy that moment with you.
And it's one for the memories.
Yeah, definitely.
I mean, you've actually met Prince William before though,
haven't you?
Bestie.
Yes.
You were just like, hey Will, how's it going?
Yeah, on the podium last time was special.
And then before the tournament,
being able to have the send off
by him is really special and the girls that's first tournaments it was I think that's a really
special moment for each and every one of them. So so amazing well before we get into the nitty
gritty questions I want to warm you both up with a little game. Oh god. Yeah yeah yeah get ready for this.
It's actually really easy it's called Basecamp Bingo. Oh no. Okay I yeah, yeah, get ready for this. It's actually really easy. It's called Base Camp Bingo.
Oh no. Okay. I'm gonna read out some scenarios. Yeah, and you just have to shout bingo if this
has already happened whilst you've been, since you've touched down. Basically, you're here to
spill the tea. Okay. You're here to give us the tea on the girls. It's not, doesn't have to be
about you. If you know this is true about another girl, bingo. Okay. Okay. Is this in Zurich or just in camp?
This is mostly going to be related to Zurich, but you'll the questions are super specific.
So you'll know. Are you up for it? I'm ready. Yeah. Who would you say out of the two of
you is game wise as in silly game, not football game, more competitive. Oh, have you ever played a game together?
We have. We did play that game, the scrambled letters one.
Yes. I actually thought I'd be better than I was, but I was absolutely terrible.
And what's the other one that we play?
Werewolf. Oh, I get really into that.
I'm sorry. These girls come up with the most random names of games.
I've heard about all these different games that you guys just make, you just create.
Werewolf is fun.
What's werewolf?
Werewolf is a great game.
So like there's villains in the group, then there's werewolves that like kill the villains
and then you have to shut your eyes and then you've got to work out who it is.
Is it a bit like Murder in the Dark?
Do you remember Murder in the Dark?
Yeah, I think kind of a little bit.
And there's a few special cards.
Kind of like Traitors.
Yeah, similar to that.
And you can have like a peeker
and like they can peek to try and help the villagers get out.
Me and Lucy Parker ended up really getting into it.
And I was like, it's not me.
I was like, I think it's you.
She was like, she was the spy.
Yeah.
And I'm like, I think it's you.
And she was like, it's not me. I think it's you. And she was like, it's not me.
I think it's you.
And I was like, oh, so the reality is what we're saying is we need to get some of you on traitors
because you'd be amazing at it.
I think so.
Yeah, I think so.
Traitors, if you're listening, get some of the girls on.
Yeah.
Imagine a lioness is traitors.
That would be unreal.
Yeah, that would be really good.
Claudia Winkleman wouldn't know what to do with herself
she would love it alright let's give my game a go which is nowhere near as fun probably but we're
gonna have a good time okay okay number one so you just shout bingo if this has happened someone
was late for the coach to the airport I don't think so no they're very well behaved. Someone packed an outrageous amount of luggage.
I don't see anyone's luggage. It went straight to their room.
Okay, I feel like you two are protecting someone here. If you were going to guess who that
would be, if you were to think, if I'd seen her luggage.
I mean, Grace tells me she's an overpacker. So I think Grace Clinton. I think I'm going Grace Clinton. I reckon Kiara probably does as well.
Okay Grace and Kiara we're watching you. I'll ask them when I next see them on here.
Someone fell asleep on the plane.
Did I?
Surely you. Are you about to be low yourself?
No usually I do but I actually watched a program. Alright, I watched...
What did you watch?
I watched Love Island.
I had to catch up from the night before.
How does it feel to be about to start the Euros whilst also being addicted to watching
Love Island?
Do you know what?
I wasn't into it, but I really want Alessia's brother to do well, so now I'm watching it.
I never watched it before.
Apparently it's one of the best series yet.
It is, because it's not like nobody's like got off coupled up like straight away.
It's a bit like, it's a bit drama.
Yeah. Everyone's kind of snogging everyone.
Yeah.
And everyone loves drama.
Everyone loves drama.
Everyone loves drama that they are not involved in.
Which you can just speculate on.
Do you know what though?
I feel like you need a bit of that whilst you're here.
Like you just need something to zone out.
You know, my zone out is horror films
which is obviously berserk. I know. Not me. Yeah. I'm in to horror films.
Yeah see it's... You're weird. Yes I am. And there's nothing on that. How do you sleep at night?
I don't. Did you see before coming out the 28 years later? Did I? Yes I did. I didn't think it was as good just putting it out there. It's not
scary. No it's not scary. Have you seen 28 days later? That was scary right? We're gonna make Chloe watch it.
I need someone to like hold my hand and like make sure that I can sleep at night. Yeah that's fine. Jess it's that bright air. Watch it in the morning and I'll be okay. Watch it in the morning. I watched Sinners and that was quite scary.
No that is scary. But I watched it with the girls so I was good. But I would say out of 10 it's like three out of ten scary. You just said it quite scary. No, no, that is scary. But I watched it with the girls, so I was good.
But I would say out of 10, it's like three out of 10 scary.
You just said it was scary.
No, but I'm talking on your level.
Okay, okay.
On my level, I'm watching things that would keep you up
for the rest of your life.
Yes, I want my sleep, I need my beauty sleep.
We'll stick to Love Island for now.
Someone clapped when the plane landed.
No. No.
Maturity level.
Okay.
Someone left something absolutely vital in England like a toothbrush.
No. We've only been here a night so.
Can I just, can you guess, ask me what you think I left at home?
It's the most embarrassing thing you could leave and not bring with you.
Your airbrush.
No, even worse than that babe. I didn't bring any knickers.
Wow, shut down the shops girl.
I have one pair of boxes that I'm currently wearing.
Did you wear them yesterday?
Guilty.
If I did, it was the other way around.
Moving on, a competitive card game has already been played.
Well, we play the the cards so I would say
it's not competitive yet we've just got to know the game but it will get there
there's another group that's quite competitive oh yeah yeah less than that are playing the
monopoly monopoly don't play monopoly what's that monopoly but just. Oh like a mini version? Yeah. I like how we like to each other.
What about Uno? Do they all play Uno? I love Uno. Some of the girls are playing that on the bus the other day on the way to the game.
I feel like you need a bigger group for that though. Yeah. So when there's only one, two, three getting involved.
You end up with like two minutes. I feel like Jess is the games master. It feels like you're quite invested.
You actually do love a game. I do love a game. Yeah. I love a game. Cards game. I love a Cluedo. I love a long game. Get me strapped
in. I'll be there for four hours. A long game is good. A long game is really good. Have
you ever done the murder cases? No. Oh yeah. I've done a murder mystery party. We all do
it. Have you done that? Guys, we should do it to celebrate the end. Did you do the life
size monopoly game? Yeah, we did. We did go to life-size monopoly.
That sounds amazing.
It was good. It was good. It was good fun.
Do you do escape rooms? I feel like that's something.
I've never done one and I've been wanting to do one for years.
Really? Oh, I can't get out.
For some reason, it's my worst nightmare.
I just don't want to solve a puzzle.
Yeah.
Like, I don't want you to ask me what a formula is.
I don't want to be at school when I'm having fun.
I just want to get out of the room.
Yeah. Give me the key.
I'm the person that sits in the corner and waits for the clever people to all argue their
way out.
Yeah, I feel like half the time though, it's not as deep as you think it is.
Yeah, that's true.
And it's actually right in front of your face.
But that's why I don't waste my time because that would infuriate me.
Yeah, yeah.
Do you know what I mean?
When there's like noise buttons, I just keep like...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You're just in the corner going, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh.
That's me. It's like noise buttons, I just keep like... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're just the one going, Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, So we'll say bingo. Bingo! We got one. We got a bingo. Well done guys. Thanks for taking part in my very random game. We had a nice little
segue into what games we play. I think we enjoyed ourselves. So win-win on all sides.
Chloe, you've obviously played many international tournaments before. First of all, winning
the 2022 Euros, which was of course at home, and then the World Cup in Australia which we did so incredibly well in in 2023. What was your first impression of Zurich when you arrived compared to the previous
camps? I feel like the home Euros of course it was home, you didn't really have to travel then
Australia was so different being so far away from family. So this is like in between and it's really nice to be here.
Now we're excited to go around Zurich today
and see a little bit of the city,
a little boat trip with the girls.
So I think that'll be really special.
And I think everyone's starting to get excited.
Now the tournament's just around the corner.
Yeah. Now it's like when you're in it,
finally when you arrive you can really immerse yourselves
because I'm sure you guys have so much going on outside of it
but then when you're here it's like zone in, let's go.
For sure.
Jess, this is your first international tournament.
It's so exciting.
What are your first impressions even from just the vibes
within the team?
I think it's clear that this team's quite a close-knitted group.
I think everyone's so welcoming,
which I've always felt since getting here
and being selected for my first camp.
But now to be here at my first tournament
is just incredible.
The feeling's so exciting.
But I think when I actually arrived here last night,
I was like, whoa.
I didn't know what to expect, but whatever it was, it's surpassed it already.
So yeah, it's been incredible.
Oh, that sounds amazing.
I'm so happy that that's the feeling and it feels like we're in such a good place that
actually there's no other feeling to be had right now.
When I arrived this morning to here, where you guys are. I saw some of the players just walking a dog
and I was like, where have they found this dog?
Like, have they flown the dog in?
You've managed to arrive in, Zura can find a random dog.
No, it's our coffee man's dog.
The coffee man's dog.
Yeah, so Reggie, his name is. Big up Reggie. He's a gorgeous dog. He's a cute dog. The coffee man's dog. Yeah so Reggie, his name is. Big up Reggie. He's a gorgeous dog. He's
a cute dog and he's been at like a lot of camps throughout the year so he's over with us. I think
Anna Morehouse and that took him out this morning. I saw them. I was like are they walking a dog for
someone? I thought maybe they'd taken on a little side hustle while they were here. Get some extra cash,
dog walking. Why not? I mean if they want to pass it on to me, please let them know. Are you guys gonna get involved in the dog walking or?
Probably not because I think it'll make me miss my dogs a little too much. That's the only thing isn't it? When you have dogs in you with another dog you kind of start to miss yours too much. I feel bad. Yeah, like I can't walk. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I actually can't cheat on you.
Like my other dog will be upset.
I think dogs do.
I have a cat.
I know, Jess, you don't.
Well, I got.
I even got.
There's a story behind it.
As you're scared of cats, not not terrified,
but they're not like, I don't know.
I just don't trust them.
You don't trust them.
No, that's the best. Well, maybe they don't trust them. You don't trust them? No, that's the problem.
Or maybe they don't trust you.
Maybe not, maybe not.
No, do you know what it is with cats
is they don't instantly trust everyone.
That's why they can be a bit intimidating.
Well, I've grown up around cats,
but this one cat that I actually trusted,
it jumped on my head in the night when I was sleeping
and started scratching at my face.
So after that happened.
Okay, that's insane.
Yeah, and I kind of woke up as it was about to happen.
Like I felt like it was about to happen.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
And I just seen this cat leap down onto me
and I was like, with the covers,
and then all of a sudden I felt this,
and then since then I was.
Do you think if you didn't put the cover over it
it would've scratched you?
It would've probably just jumped on my face.
Yeah, I think it was probably thinking it was a game.
Yeah, I was only young, so. No no that's so scary. I'm so sorry. Well now you've got a dog to protect you
So don't worry
Hey cats are scared of dogs so they'll run away
One of the most exciting parts of staying in a hotel, don't know about you guys, is the breakfast buffet.
Now I know obviously you guys are eating a very specific nutritional diet whilst you're here.
What's your favourite thing to see on the breakfast buffet?
A little live omelette station. That was literally what was in my head. You know you're living when there's someone that's like, what would you like in your omelette station. That was literally what was in my head. Yes.
You know you're living when there's someone that's like,
what would you like in your omelette?
It's like, it's not that weird
because you could just tell a waiter,
but to know that that man is gonna,
or that woman is gonna cook it for you right in front of you.
Yeah.
It's a good one.
Yeah, no, that is the great part.
I do like a little sweet breakfast as well.
Oh, tell us.
Oh, nice.
So like a pancake or like French toast maybe with a bit of syrup.
I don't mind that sometimes. Yeah for me I would say the bacon if it's not extremely crispy I'm
walking out. I'm 50 50. Not a bacon. Depends it has to be my day for bacon. Oh bacon day. Yeah.
Bacon day. Didn't know that was a thing. Well it it's whether I'm sweet or savory, you know. Oh, I see.
I would have bacon with pancakes or with bread.
Oh, really?
I have had it before and I can say it is nice.
I just wouldn't choose it to go first, you know.
Do either of you have like a full English?
Like if you ever do a full English vibe?
Not really.
Not so much anymore, but I would.
No, no, outside of camp.
Like if you were having like a go all out breakfast, like, because for me,
if I had a full English, couldn't have the beans touching anything.
Really?
Yeah.
Oh wow.
Do you have any rules like that with breakfast?
I just don't like black pudding.
No, I wouldn't.
I don't mind it.
Yeah, I'm giving myself to be quite a window down.
I just love to eat.
And so if there's stuff left on the plate, I'm going to eat it.
Oh, okay.
I'm a leaver.
Yeah, I'm a leaver.
Yeah.
So tell me what is on your plate.
If it's going to be the dream Chloe Kelly breakfast, what is it going to be?
Oh, dream.
Yeah.
Desert Island discs.
Okay.
I would get a eggs Benedict and a sausage on the side and then I'd get pancakes if that's
my dream because I want a little sweet and savoury.
Sorry, but I love that.
It's like I'm not sticking to a theme.
I'm here to enjoy food from every continent in different forms, on different plates though,
right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Because if you had the pancakes touching the hollandaise sauce, that'd be weird.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That sounds perfect though.
But I want my pancakes after, not before.
Oh, so you're having a three course breakfast.
Eggs Benedict with my sausage, and then my pancakes after.
Nice, a dessert, very good shout.
What about you, Jess?
Similar, but I think I'd go for the full English.
But with an omelette, like, if we're saying
that I'm just gonna be really hungry, like,
I'm going all out.
In this strange scenario, you can have whatever you want.
Toast, beans, everything, full English,
and then I would go little bit of French toast
and pancakes at the same time.
Oh, nice.
Yeah.
I can't choose between them.
Need a little sweet to finish off.
And if you were wondering why you join us on this podcast,
that's why.
Where else are you gonna hear exactly Chloe
and Jess's exact breakfast that they would choose
in a dream scenario?
Now you're not just here to eat hotel breakfast.
How do you feel ahead of your first training session?
I'm really excited actually to see our training facility
and the game just around the corner.
I think all focus is now on the first
game I'd say.
Yeah, I think we've had a good pre-camp. I think we're ready to train. I think it would
be good to carry that over and have the good competitive training sessions that we've been
having.
And I feel like you guys seem like in such a, I would say honestly beautiful mindset
that going back into that training
is gonna be a bit of an easier transition
because you've had this sort of like
lovely moment with your families,
hanging out with the Royal family,
now you're here to get a job done.
And I guess it's kind of like getting that motivation started.
It feels like it's already here.
Yeah, I think it's important to have those rest days away
from the pitch after the game and a little downtime. Find our surroundings in Zurich and then straight back into the focus of the pitch.
I think we're ready. Yes. And Chloe, your celebration after winning at the winning
goal at the Euros was so iconic. Now, what we're thinking, are we bringing that back or is there
something new coming? Have you even thought about it? Like, is it just going to naturally happen?
Or is there something new coming? Have you even thought about it?
Like, is it just gonna naturally happen?
Yeah, I think celebrations naturally happen.
That was just in the moment.
Jess has got a flip in her, so I wanna see the flip.
Every time this comes up, you throw it at me.
I want the flip.
Well, I've heard it, and you did say,
you have said that you would do it if...
I mean, yeah, well, if I came on
and scored the winning goal in the final,
I think I'm gonna do a back flip. I think it's best that you do. Yeah, I honestly, well, if I came on and scored the winning goal in the final, I think I'm going to do a backflip.
I think it's best that you do.
Yeah, I'll roll you next.
Yeah.
Oh my God, please do that.
Just you flipping and rolling.
This feels like a Benson Boone concert.
Maybe you can go live with him on tour.
He loves a backflip.
Jess and Chloe, we've run out of time, but thank you so much for joining us on that Lionesses podcast, Connected by EE.
