All right, cut.
Cut.
Can we do it again?
Yeah.
We've got the positivity clicks out.
Snap.
Yep.
Snaps for positivity.
Yep.
Snaps.
Play mama.
Let's talk about the Wales game.
We knew that it's a big rivalry.
I think it's going to be quite a fiery game.
We've just got to get our heads in the game, right?
Exactly.
I say we.
I'm not involved.
Hello, and welcome to That Lionesses podcast connected by EE.
I'm Harriet Rose and on today's episode, we are looking ahead to England's highly anticipated
game against Wales on Sunday.
We're going to be hearing how the team have been preparing and what they're expecting
from the Welsh side.
And to talk through all of this and more, I'm joined by the brilliant Anna Morehouse
and Mea Letizier. Welcome,. Anna welcome for the first time. Thank you.
How does it feel to be on that Lioness's podcast? Feels amazing. Thank you I really felt that
from you. Mea you just said something very nice about our podcast Judeo. I do really
like it. Thank you we worked very hard on it and. And when I say we, I don't mean me.
I mean other people.
We're going to talk a little bit about the upcoming game
against Wales shortly.
But first, I heard the two of you are camp besties.
Is that correct?
Oh, Aggie might have something to say about that.
Aggie's going to be happy to want to start that.
When I first arrived in Switzerland,
I saw you guys on a walk with Aggy.
Because I've heard that you're doing little morning walks.
We're just the morning walk.
Morning walk. Yeah.
With Reggie, with Reggie.
The dog. I saw the dog.
I was like, who who's brought the dog?
And I was like, it was the barista's dog.
Yeah. Has he gone now?
No, he's still here. He's still here.
He's working. So we need to go and take Reggie out.
Yeah, I thought you meant the dog.
I was like, dog's working? Oh.
He's a working dog. Very good at making a macchiato.
Tell me a bit about the walks though, because those kind of things are really important
whilst you're here in camp, right? Just to get the little brain working and kind of give
you a bit of time away from footy thinking, I guess.
I feel like we just go wandering in the woods and just hopefully we find our way back.
Yesterday we went to the zoo.
We walked to the zoo.
Did you?
Yeah, we didn't go in the zoo,
but we just went to the entrance and walked back.
I know, we didn't really have enough time for that,
but we get a few close calls on the way back.
Oh, on the time.
Yeah, if we make it back,
but we always do, obviously, make it back.
And I was gonna say, that's quite dangerous in Zurich,
because I tell you what, you walk one way and it's downhill
You have to walk back up the hill. I've never walked back uphill. I've got a cab every time
I'm terrified. Tell me about how you two first became friends. Well, I don't know when was your first camp
Probably this time last year. Yeah, maybe so if you guys only known each other a year
Yeah, and only on camp because obviously Anna lives in America. Yeah, sorry. So have you guys only known each other a year?
Yeah, and only on camp,
because obviously Anna lives in America,
so sorry, but I'm not gonna come visit you over there.
I mean, you can come in off season.
No, no, okay, I've got a spare room.
Meya doesn't wanna come.
No, sorry.
It's just a camp walk.
Camp walkies group with Aggie.
That's how we've bonded.
And I love that.
You need those kind of moments in camp though, don't you?
Yeah, definitely.
Lauren Hemp and Esme were actually telling us that they, because they're sort of besties
and they live the far apart dream, one's in America and one's obviously in the UK.
Do you find that you are a bit more disconnected from your pals over in the UK
or do you still keep a good connection with them whilst you're there?
To be honest, I realised the other day I only text Maya to ask what time we're going on walks.
Yeah.
And she doesn't text back from what she said earlier?
Sometimes she does.
I don't really like carrying my phone around with me
when I'm going for a walk.
That's good.
So I just leave it here.
That's good.
Are you a not really a phone girl?
No, I do like going on my phone a bit,
but just having it in my pocket
and I don't actually need it, I don't like.
You were very disappointed
when you actually brought your phone the other day.
I can't, I couldn't believe it, I swear. I'd literally left it in my room on the charger.
And then I got downstairs and I was like,
Your phone's binging in your pocket.
It was binging it and I was like, is that you?
And I was like, no, mine's on silent.
And I was like, what?
That is really freaky when your brain does something that you didn't right realize it does
I was so disappointed in myself, but I guess your brain is pretty focused on other things right now training schedules pretty
Intense, but you are having a bit of time off today. Is that right? Yeah, what have you guys got planned?
Probably a little spa day. Yeah. Well, we went for coffee this morning in town. Nice. That was and then
Yeah, well we went for coffee this morning in town nice
and then We went to the spa. I did some like mobility stuff with one of the physios
No, and then I'm actually going to a waterfall later with my dad. Oh
Yeah, that's so nice. I know so I'm really looking forward to that
Oh, and then we have pizza making and your dad's like a big support for you isn't here. Yeah. Yeah pizza making
I know all together? I think
so. Yeah, I think so, yeah. Did you get to bring your family and friends or was it just
the team? No, it's just the team. No, this one's just the team, yeah. I feel like whatever
you guys do outside of training, it's going to become competitive because I've heard about
all the games you guys play. We talked about Legretto. Yeah. We talked about all the card
games. Pizza making is probably going to go off, isn't it? I don't know how you can make
pizza making competitive.
Well, it's outside, so I'm hoping that we can just play Spike Ball.
Spike Ball and...
That's the only thing I want to play, is Spike Ball.
Have you heard about Spike Ball?
Spike Ball I have heard about, but I still don't really understand it.
We had to kind of put it on pause because of the weather, didn't we?
So, talk me through Spike Ball.
It's just like a mini trampoline in the middle, sort of, that you can't jump up and down on it.
And then you can have three passes per team,
so there's four of you, two per team.
One touch.
One touch, three passes max,
and you've gotta smack it at the trampoline,
and then the other person has to-
Grab it?
Yeah, like the other team, you've gotta try and whack it out.
Oh my God.
Or like do a little one and then you have to-
Yeah.
Is it a game you guys made up, or is it a real thing?
No, it's a real thing.
Man, I need to get up to date with my game.
It's really good.
It gets so competitive though.
Does it?
Yeah.
Do you like, I feel like, May,
you're like into the competitive spirit of it all.
Yeah, like I love that.
Yeah, even in your off times.
Yeah.
I love that.
I mean, I'd be sat watching telly.
Like you, you sort of in that competitive vibe
where you want to take a chill pill.
I can get into it, but I can also be quite chill about it.
Yeah. Yeah.
I love that for you.
You've been in Zurich a little while now.
Have you got any highlights from the city?
What have you been enjoying?
I like the boat trip we went on,
on like one of the first days.
Oh yeah, that was when we got here, wasn't it? Yeah, that wasn't it? That was nice. Yeah, the lake's amazing isn't it?
Yeah, my favorite part would be the lake. Me, Aggie and Grace went down the slide at the lake and it was so fun
There was a slide? Yeah, that's like a slide. I only have seen
The things you do dives off which I'm too scared to do
I'm too scared to slip
Oh no, the slide was so fun. It was really, really fun.
Okay, so you're a lady. It was just like loads of like kids so then it was me, Aggie and Grace.
Just like waiting for our go. You know what, live your life as a kid. Exactly. Anna,
Aggie and other members of the squad have shared about their competitive nature but you're kind of
a bit more chill.
So what happens when you get into the card games,
like the Gretto and stuff like that,
or do you just stay watching from the sidelines?
No, I play some card games.
And I'll just go quiet if I'm losing
because I don't want to get competitive like that.
I like that.
I'm so bad.
I switched from being the nicest person ever
to wanting to kill everyone in the circle. That's why I don't want to go though. I don't want to be the person like that.
Yeah so I just keep that for the football field. Yeah exactly.
I like that. Talking about games, I've got one I think you're gonna like
especially because you can now get competitive. Okay yeah I'm gonna start up.
Don't worry Anna because you're gonna be working as a team. Okay good
You're gonna be trying to beat Neve and Hannah who played this on their previous episode
They got 14 between them. Hannah's so clever though
Is it general Hannah is clever, but it was Neve who was almost terrifying Neve Neve literally
Didn't she transform she tried's so confessible. Yeah
she was like she was getting angry at me for not doing it that's what, which I actually loved.
You're each going to have a minute to pull out words from this bag.
You each have a minute to pull out words and you've got to describe the word to the other player, but you can't use the other three words
that are on the paper.
So I'll give you an example.
It might say, describe captain,
but the words might be leader, armband, leer,
that you can't say.
It's a fast paced game, you each get a minute.
All right, sorry.
Okay.
But you have to beat 14 between you.
Okay, so I'm gonna give you-
You got actual stopwatch?
Yes.
Of course I have, I'm the gym teacher here.
Mayer, you ready?
Yeah.
Three, two, one, go.
At the end of a tournament, final.
Yeah.
Okay.
What do you do when you're defending
when the ball's in the air?
Header. Come on, Mayer. I can't open it. What do you do when you're defending when the ball's in the air? Head her.
Come on, Meya.
I can't open it.
You said ball.
I can't give you that.
What?
You mad?
I said ball.
Keep going.
Hini Meyazawa got it at the last World Cup.
Player of the tournament?
Nearly.
Goalkeeper of the tournament?
Goal of the tournament?
The other one.
Save of the tournament?
No.
Young player of the tournament? The other one. Save of the tournament? No. Young player
of the tournament? Silver, not silver. Golden Boot? Yes. What splits a football match? Half
time. Why am I shaking? I can't open these stupid things. 10 seconds. Not defending.
Attacking.
Nah, like...
Time's up!
What was that? Don't put them back in.
Goal.
Goal. That was good.
How am I supposed to say goal without saying net, score and strike?
I don't make the rules, I just play them.
I mean, I literally do make the rules.
I don't like brain games.
Now she's upset with me.
See, this is what happens.
See, this is what happens when she goes.
Did they get 14, like?
By the way, this is exactly what Niamh did.
Yeah, I believe it.
I didn't even get that.
And do you know what?
She also complained about the paper.
Yeah, I couldn't open it.
My producer had to personally apologize.
I couldn't open it.
Read one of those as well, please.
I think we should take back the time
it takes us to open the paper and give it back to us.
Okay.
VAR.
Yeah.
Let's watch that again.
All right, well that was terrible.
No.
No, we've got another one.
Yeah, but that's like when you do a football match
and you play bad and someone says well played.
It's like well obviously not.
Okay, Maya that was rubbish.
Yeah, that's better.
I'm like yeah I know it was bad.
So don't put them back in.
But don't worry because you might be better at't worry, because you might be better at guessing.
Yeah, I might be better at guessing.
Don't worry.
I'm just gonna shout words at you.
Ready? I'm terrified now.
Are these two really football related?
Yeah, but do you know what? You're doing well.
This is only meant to be fun.
We need to get 10 to draw at least.
Yeah, you need to work fast.
Yeah, that's like one every six seconds. We've
got this. Okay. Come on. Ready steady go. After full time. Extra time. Yep. Well done. You Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm The word? I didn't even know what it was. They're in a row.
11, formation? No.
What is that?
I was trying my best.
Yeah, that was a good one.
I'm shaking as well.
That was bad.
Red?
Blue.
No.
Card.
Yeah, but I can't say any other words.
Set off.
No.
I've read card.
Out of the referees.
Book.
Little bit more.
I don't know.
It's a booking.
Stop, stop.
That was so bad.
All right, cut.
Cut.
Can we just start again?
Yeah.
See, I told you I'm not making a brain games.
But you're very clever, so it's nothing.
I'm not.
Yes, you are, because you just said
how many seconds it takes to answer each question.
Yeah, and you worked that out really quickly.
I'm afraid, May, you are clever.
That was a pure maths.
Shall I try and do one? Because I've never done it.
Let me see if it's actually hard.
Not with the timing, not with the timing.
Yeah, you have to have the timer because there's a pressure.
I'm not going to really play.
I'm just going to make you feel better by being rubbish.
That thing that you do before you play? Warm up. I'm amazing. One more
go, just see. Leah. Captain. No. Center back. No. Bender. Yep. Sorry I'm really good at
this, it's embarrassing for you too. Let's move on. Zero pressure.
I don't think we should even have that score.
Yeah, can we just...
Shall we pretend this never happened?
Shall we just pretend we got 15?
Pinky promise.
No, I've just been pretending it never happened
because it's like that embarrassing.
No, no, we can't pretend it never happened
because it's on camera, but what we'll say is,
wow, oh my God, girls, 15!
Wow, good job, mate.
That was unbelievable.
And if you try and ask me for VAR I don't care
because I'm not interested in VAR on this game. Congratulations that was fantastic playing. Thank
you. Now off the back of being competitive let's talk about the Wales game. What have been the main
focuses ahead of the next match? I think mostly recovery to be fair
from the Netherlands game so far.
We knew that it's a big rivalry.
I think it's gonna be quite a fiery game.
I think in another life, in another world,
it would be like if they were in a different group,
it would be like we would probably both
be supporting each other.
Yeah, it's so weird actually.
Yeah.
So weird.
But now it's the rival, we just gotta to get our heads in the game, right?
Exactly.
I'm not involved.
Mentally, how are you preparing to maintain the momentum from the Netherlands game to
this one?
Because I think it's just about, I guess, upping the ante this time again.
Yeah, I mean, I think we know that every game's a final
and we're just going into it with that mindset
and being more positive with each other.
We've got the positivity clicks out.
Snaps.
Snaps for positivity.
Snaps.
Is that just because you burned too many calories doing this?
You don't wanna waste any?
It hurts your hands.
This is just our bench thing.
I love that. Play mama. The Welsh team are really good and they are playing for Pride
right now. It's such a big tournament for them. How difficult a game do you anticipate
it will be? I think it's going to be really hard. I think especially because it's England
and Wales. And yeah, of course they've got here, which is amazing for them. I think it's England and Wales and yeah of course they've got here which is amazing for them
and I think it's great for Wales as well. I think their fans are incredible so yeah it's
going to be a difficult game but yeah hopefully one that we can get some more points on the board.
I hope so. Anna as a goalie you do a lot of extra drills with the team. For someone who's not a
professional footballer, yes me, I know you probably thought I was, can you talk me through what that looks like? Yeah I mean we do like probably 20 minutes,
20 minutes sorry, by ourselves as goalkeepers and then yeah we just join in with the team and
hopefully pass us the ball sometimes you know. Yeah. Sometimes they don't. Oh.
Mea, how valuable is it to have Anna, Kiara and Hannah in training for the rest of the
group?
Because I feel like goalies are so synonymous, they're such a team, and to have their energy
with you, what's that like?
Yeah, it's great.
I think obviously they've got the goalkeeper union, which is their little thing, whatever.
They can do whatever they want to do.
But yeah, of course when they come in
I think yeah they're all great energy so it's really nice when we're training with them and
everyone's together. And yeah they usually come in like a small side of game or something when
tensions are quite high anyway so no it's really good. And for both of you this has been your first
senior tournament. Has
anything surprised you coming into tournament camp? Honestly this hotel.
Yeah I was gonna say that. It's incredible. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a
fairy tale castle in the sky. It's actually crazy. I don't want to branding
and stuff. It's so cool. Do we have to leave? No you can live here forever
actually. I just heard back
from you. What's been your favourite thing you've seen in the hotel? Oh I really like
the sign that's England and it has all our grassroots teams on it. Yeah that's really
cool. It's so cool. Yeah I really like that. That comes a close second to the jacuzzi I'm
assuming. Yeah the spa. Don't tell anyone that.
Anna, you've shown real determination getting to this point.
Any reflections on your journey here?
Not literally your journey to Switzerland.
I mean, I don't mean the plane.
Yeah, it was a long one.
No, I think it's just like a testament to not giving up and just keeping that hope and
the dream alive that I guess anyone can kind of make things happen if you just stick with
it and keep going.
And have a lot of talent.
A little bit of talent spring within that.
When you were at the France match
and you could hear the national anthem playing,
did it start to seem real when that kicked off?
Like is that when it all really felt,
or did you have it going into that first game?
I don't know really, yeah, I guess it was.
Or was it landing in the Fairytale Hotel really?
I actually think it was going to the hotel, yeah.
With all the branding and stuff.
Yeah, we'd been on prep camp for a while,
so it didn't like,
because we'd been at St. George's Park quite a lot,
so it kind of didn't feel real.
It was just like another camp.
And then as soon as we got here and walked through the hotel
and seen the wall chart, it was just like, this is cool.
Yeah. So amazing.
I'm like, this is it now. Like So amazing. Like this is, yeah, this is it now.
Yeah.
Like we're here, like it's time to, time to work.
And we was like one of the last to play as well.
So it was like when we were going in the players' lounge
in the evening, there was like games going on all the time.
So like as a team, we were all watching them.
And then finally it was our go to kick things off.
So it was really nice.
I love that.
What I've loved seeing during the games is how the group supports from the side of the pitch,
but also on the pitch in those moments where people are not necessarily even just playing the ball themselves,
they're just supporting the next player. How important is it as a team to feel that level of support that is clearly visible from outside?
How important is it for you guys to feel that with each other? Just on and off the pitch you guys have all got each other's
backs and it's just so beautiful to see. Yeah it's really important I think that's
what the biggest takeaway was from the France game is that we could have
done that a lot better. So then obviously going into the Netherlands game I think
we're a really nice group and a really together group as it is and I think it just took that little realisation that we that we are all
together and that we need to take that into the next games. So yeah it's really
nice in the hotel and the setup allows for everyone to spend time with each
other which is also really good because you need that in tournaments as well.
I've seen a few socials clips there's one of Esme doing
a sort of ball in the goal type energy what's it called in basketball?
basketball, what do they call it? Shoot in the hoop? Basketball. Shoot in the hoop? No? Why are you laughing that's what they say?
it's a basket. It's a basket? Well I've seen the video of her doing like it's
like a group. Like the trick shot thing. Yeah that was a quick shot.
Yeah I had such bad fomo, I came out so late and they were all doing it and I was like
oh I wish I was here.
Well now maybe you need to be the one getting the ball in the hoop.
To be fair I was just done like a trick shot with everyone so I think that might go out
and that's going to come out at some point.
Sick.
Watch out for that.
Finally looking ahead to Sunday's game, what does it mean to you when you see all the fans
and the families traveling so far to see you?
Yeah, I mean, it's incredible that they've come all this way
and just to see us kick a ball around the field, you know?
It's amazing.
Yeah, so I mean, I love it when we,
like you said, with the national anthem and stuff,
I love it and hearing everyone sing it and...
You mean Sweet Caroline?
Yes, the national anthem of England.
If you came into training the other day
and Sweet Caroline was just blasting out the speakers.
Really?
I was like, what the hell?
Yeah.
Yeah, that's cool.
It must be amazing to see the age ranges at the matches.
I was saying to some of the other girls
on the flight here the other day,
there was a girl in full kit, like sort of six or seven years old, full kit on the plane, like unbelievable
energy from them. Little girls and boys coming over to see the game, it just must be amazing
for you guys, amazing feeling.
Yeah, it's really nice. And for them to come all the way to Switzerland to watch the games
as well, it must mean a lot to them and it means a lot to us as well just to have them all here.
And to hear them in the stands.
I know, yeah.
Wearing like Russo and Tuna on the back of it, it's incredible.
So cute.
It's so amazing.
Finally, what three words would you use to summarise the spirit of the team ahead of
Sunday's game?
Good vibes.
Can we have three between us?
I said good vibes. You need one more.
Positivity.
Love it. Love it.
I love the new snaps thing.
Snaps.
Well guys, congratulations.
