Beans were part of my everyday life.
Sorry, beans.
Every time you say something, you say not what I'm thinking you're going to say.
What's your favourite thing about Munich?
I would have to say the tattoo studio.
Huh? You tattooist? What? Have I missed something? You're a tattoo artist now.
I am, yes.
Honestly, I'm so gassed. I never meet anyone from Warwick.
I know, it's bonkers. Do you love Warwick Castle?
I really don't. I hate castles.
You hate castles you hate castles i used to love to go fishing gill scrambling sorry who's gill scrambling
hello and welcome to another episode of that lionesses podcast connected by
ee i'm harriet rose and today we're taking you round the world, well, kind of, with two lionesses who've traded fish and chips for foreign leagues, but always fly the England flag proudly wherever they go.
Before we get into it, don't forget to hit the follow wherever you're listening, or subscribe to the official England YouTube channel so you never miss an episode.
Coming up, we're talking all things new environments, missing home and Lionesses group chats.
And here to do that, I am joined by two absolute stars of England Lionesses squad, Georgia Stanway and Jess Carter.
Welcome, ladies. How are you feeling?
Yeah, good.
Thank you.
Is it nice to be on the podcast?
Of course, there is nowhere I'd rather be than right here.
Oh my God, Jessess thank you so much
i believe that 100 percent um we're thrilled to have you here uh with us jess um what do you think
of the new kit i really like it the old one needed to go oh it's been a long time out with the old
in with the new yeah my favorite color is purple as well so no yeah did you pick it i was it all done were you
actually it was all down to me yeah um georgia do you feel like it's a little uh fresh school
uniform yeah you everyone's already online trying to find matching trainers
yeah is it would you say that's lilac no no not at all it's purple that was a test actually yeah what's there is a purple
beginning with a violet no that's too dark magenta is it is this magenta i don't know
and now i just need a bag pencil case oh my god love it yeah were you one of those girlies at
school absolutely oh my god it was like thrilling yeah to go and get your new pencil case did you prefer tin or like a plastic like you know like
a shape like a bit like a sausage roll did you go themed or colored always colored yeah yeah was
you a side bag a crossbody or a rucksack rucksack yeah fair because I wore the rucksack extremely low and then got my friends to draw on it so cool what about you I was I was the kind of girl that would borrow a pencil off
someone else that's really stressful yeah that is just that's telling us a lot about you Jess
I'd be with relaxed and just I didn't want to spend unnecessary money and the prices I wasn't
going to need well you're not going to need it
because someone else is going to give it to you.
That's why we had to buy double.
Be resourceful.
Me and Georgia are triggered right now.
Right, let's get into the training.
We are here at St. George's Park,
the home of English football.
Does this place feel like home to you guys?
No.
Okay.
I'd say it was the home of football. I wouldn't say it was our safe house. So you don't live here? No. Okay. I'd say it was the home of football.
I wouldn't say it was our safe house.
So you don't live here?
No, no.
Oh my God, I thought I saw a bed over there.
Okay, different person, obviously.
Georgia, your new home then,
that's obviously where you feel home now, is Munich.
It is.
Quite different from your hometown of Barrow-in-Finesse.
Yeah, best place in the world.
Best place in the world.
I haven't been, so I can't comment. Okayinesse? Yeah, best place in the world. Best place in the world. I haven't been, so I can't comment.
It's okay.
What makes it the best place in the world?
Just got a bit of everything.
Yeah?
And the people.
Good people.
Yeah.
What about Munich?
Does it feel homey now?
No, I also really like it.
I've been there for like three years now.
Yeah.
What do you like about it most?
It's very much like England.
So you've got the city, the mountains, the lakes, a lot of greenery.
I'm a country girl, so yeah, I like to escape the big cities.
Oh, do you go hiking?
Sometimes.
What other stuff do you do in the mountains?
I used to love to go fishing, gill scrambling.
Sorry?
Who's gill scrambling?
We used to do it a lot when we was younger we used to crop like climb up a river why that was just what we did that was just kayak
just what did you do when you were younger the good old days of shopping have just got out of
the window yeah you were in the mall she was hanging outside the corner shop yeah basically i mean that was fun yeah no your mom says stay away from
them kids yeah stay away from the ones standing outside the shop was that you just no but i wasn't
i was a good girl you know what i was doing just playing football on my bike yeah yeah
whereas georgia was climbing up a rock face with the water
spilling all over her
I mean it sounds like
I don't think you could
pay me to do that
not even a chance
I mean it does sound
very Bear Grylls
I'm into it
Munich though
has got a lot to offer
there's a lot of
like vibes to it
what's your favourite
thing about Munich?
good question
I would have to say
the tattoo studio
that was not what I was expecting say more
I just love going to get tattoos yeah and I can do it so huh you tattoo us what have I missed
something you're a tattoo artist I am yes oh my god should we do a tattoo of course let's do okay
you should do that to me when we go on the podcast. How many tattoos do you think I've got?
Zero, ten, four or more than 13?
That was random.
Well, I made it up in my head just now.
Zero.
No, I've got more than 13.
No way.
They're all hidden though, aren't they? I know.
I'm a secretive girly.
Cheeky.
So you'll give me my 15th tattoo.
Of course.
Jess, home for you is New York City.
Yeah, I mean, that sounds a bit cooler.
I'm actually in, well, that's not Little,
that's all New Jersey,
but New York City sounds cool.
Your home is New Jersey.
Perfect.
I've heard the markets are lovely in New Jersey.
Do you go and get fresh pasta?
I've no, not yet.
Wow, I'm failing at this chat i didn't know that was
a thing either however if you know a spot i'll go oh my god i just watched a film about it recently
i feel like it was probably a made-up place but i will google it and find out for you um you are
actually from warwick yeah which is where i'm from i can't honestly i'm so gassed i never meet
anyone from warwick i know it's bonkers do you you love Warwick Castle? I really don't. I hate castles. You hate castles? I do. Baby,
you need to go to the horror tour because it is lit. Okay, I did go to that. That is pretty sick.
Thank you. That is pretty sick. But once I've been once, I don't need to go again.
You should take Georgia. I would encourage Georgia to go, but I won't be going again.
I love that. I would encourage you to go and have a boring time. I think I've been, actually. Have you?
Yeah.
We used to do a lot of our youth camps in Warwick.
But where?
Isn't it at the university?
Yeah.
Coventry University.
I think I've done one there before, actually.
Isn't it confusing that Coventry University isn't in Coventry?
Yeah, it makes no sense, really.
It's actually in Warwick, for anyone guessing.
Right, before we get into chatting about living and working abroad,
it's time to do a quick round of this or that i'll throw you some options some british and some american or german
and you've got to pick the one you prefer okay okay are you ready for this jess cheeseburger
and fries or fish and chips that's hard i know babe that's the whole aim of the game. That's hot. Fish and chips. Good girl.
Georgia, Cumberland sausage or German bratwurst?
Cumberland sausage, 100%. Good girl.
Over a German bratwurst.
No competition.
No way.
Jess, a New York bagel or a sausage roll?
What's in the bagel?
And where's the sausage roll from?
Gregg's?
Oh, New York bagel. Georgia,'s the sausage roll from? Gregg's? Or New York Bagel?
Georgia, a Kendall mint cake or German pastries?
I'd have to go German pastry.
Because you were a bit scared to do that because you didn't want to upset people, did you?
I do, yeah, but mint cake's not my favourite.
What is mint cake?
It's like a slab of, like, mint cake.
I don't know how to describe it.
It's sweet.
Is it made of mint?
Yeah, it tastes like mint.
It's like an after eight, but it's not chocolate.
Oh, so it's like a massive after eight?
Yeah, but it's not like a chocolate taste.
It's almost like a biscuit maybe.
So it's a massive biscuit cake after eight.
Yeah.
Sounds fantastic.
No, it's not my favourite.
So you've gone for German pastries?
Yeah.
Okay.
Jess, London Underground or New York Subway?
London Underground.
I cannot understand that subway and some of the rogue stuff that is on there.
And how long have you lived there?
Since August.
Oh, it's not that long.
Yeah.
Still got time.
Yeah.
It is absolutely weeing it down
so i apologize to anyone who is hearing some interference it's because it's england okay
moving forward georgia a pint in a cumbrian country pub or a stein in a munich beer garden
stein yeah i've got a lot of memories now with it with octoberfest oh we always get
we always get steins when we like win the league and stuff so like yeah it's sentimental being in
an english pub yeah but you know what i miss is just saying i'll go to the pub have something to
eat and watch the footy yeah because there's nothing like that you'd make a fortune if you
made one in munich yeah What if you're listening?
Business offer.
Jess, a stroll through Central Park or a stroll through Warren Castle?
Central Park.
Oh, I was really shocked by that.
Georgia, calling it tea or dinner?
I'd say lunch, dinner.
No.
I'd say breakfast, dinner, tea.
Yeah, so you say tea, not dinner.
Do you say dinner for lunch?
I'd often say dinner, dinner. Huh? Like evening? Yeah, but I'd say breakfast, dinner, tea. Yeah, so you say tea, not dinner. So you say dinner for lunch? But I'd often say dinner, dinner.
Huh?
Like evening?
Yeah, but I'd say dinner and dinner.
So you just like to switch it up and keep everyone confused at all times?
Yeah.
There's no order, actually.
No.
Breakfast, dinner, tea.
Breakfast.
Yeah, I would never say lunch.
What about you, Jess?
Dinner.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
I think that's a Warwick thing.
Shout out the Warwick people. All right right now that we've settled the big debates uh we're going to
dive into what happens when you step out of your comfort zone moving your whole life uh to an
entirely new country and navigating new environments because it's really tough and you have to travel
the world for tournaments and stuff jess what's the biggest difference you found in living in the
u.s um compared to England?
Because your dad's, is your dad American?
Yeah, my dad's from North Carolina.
The enthusiasm that is in America.
I'm not the most enthusiastic human being,
so that's been a bit of a shock to the system.
Very British of you.
Yeah, but it's actually, I thought it would irritate me
that people being so happy all the time.
But it's been so refreshing.
And I think it's been kind of really helpful for me to,
I guess, be a bit more positive,
even in moments where you just can't be bothered.
Yeah.
So it's actually been really nice.
Oh, that's lovely.
Georgia, is there anything you really had to adjust to
when you first started living in Germany?
How smiley are Germans?
Very, actually. They're very open. Yeah. Oh, really? Yeah. Quite are Germans? Very, actually.
They're very open.
Oh, really?
Quite direct?
What Germans do you know?
Because I don't know.
Speak to your message.
I think for me,
the biggest thing was
is beans were part of my everyday life.
Sorry, beans.
Every time you say something,
you say not what I'm thinking you're going to say.
Right, talk me through this, because this feels traumatic.
Beans were part of your everyday life.
Yeah, specifically Heinz.
Wow, have you heard it coming down?
And the heavens opened when you mentioned Heinz beans!
Oh, my God.
Wow, that's crazy.
I do apologise if you experienced some disruption
from the pitter-patter of English weather.
We are here at St George's Park,
and you know what?
England is England.
But we hope you can enjoy the episode anyway.
Jess, how do you think the experience of living abroad
has changed you as a person,
other than your massive love for bagels?
I think it's just being more adaptable firstly especially with the travel that we have to do,
the times that we have to travel, the pitches that we play on, I think some of the facilities
that I play in in America versus everything I had in Chelsea makes a big difference. Yeah.
But then again,
just the enthusiasm,
like trying to be positive in so many more aspects
than maybe what I was in before.
I think that's,
that's really been huge.
Yeah.
Georgia, how's your German?
Good.
Good?
Is that,
is that it?
Yeah, that's about as far
as it goes.
That's really good. Yeah, my Dutch is good. But it's that's about as far as it was that's really good yeah my deutsche is good
but it's hard that's good yeah that's good job oh there we go the accent's good and that's the
first key thing it is how's your um new york coming um not practice that one i'm gonna stick
as british as i can okay jess has been learning german also have you? yeah why don't you ask how her German is
how's your German coming on Jess?
it was good
it was good
and then I just put it a little bit
on the back burner for a while
do a lingo or?
yeah I've just gone over
my 500 day streak on that
shut up
for real
high five
I take it very seriously
thank you very much
because I just got my 100 day
but it's really annoying
when someone's doing it, though.
Oh, my God.
To listen to it's infuriating.
I used to get so competitive with it.
Like, I had to make sure
I was on top of that leaderboard.
And the more German I did,
the less I started to do
because the more it just irritates me now.
Yeah, it's not the greatest thing
for two really competitive footballers to do
because it might take your time up a bit.
Yeah.
You need to get on the Duolingo flex, Georgia.
I'll try. I feel like that's a lie but i've got a teacher called mrs baumgartner so shout out to her she's great oh mrs baumgartner shout out to you that's good
oh obviously it'll help you a bit if um in switzerland because they speak swiss german
yeah they also speak French.
Do you have any French?
It's quite different,
but I don't have any French.
Bonjour.
Bonjour, ça va?
Je m'appelle Jogier.
Oh, très bien.
Why's your name got to change?
No, to be fair,
my name changes.
Ariette, not Harriet.
Yeah.
Because they don't say H.
I don't understand this, right?
Because I'm like,
my name is still Jess.
Whether I'm in France Germany
it would be Jess
I am Jess
no you would be Jess
je suis Jess
je suis Jess
j'adore foot
you like feet
what's football
I don't know
I guess I'll learn that
before I go to Switzerland
not only do you navigate
have to navigate so many new things
by living and working abroad,
it means you're away from home a lot.
Jess, when you're in New York,
how do you navigate missing home?
How difficult is it for you?
To be fair, so far I've been really lucky
because a lot of my family managed to come out and see me.
Every time I come back for camp,
my family get to come and see me. So, so far it's not bad really yeah I mean I love them a lot but I I don't mind
being away from home really yeah to be honest you're like I absolutely love it maybe I'm like
I said I'm really lucky that they come and visit me and come to the games maybe it's not too far
for the fact that it's America it's probably the closest yeah yeah it's really not too bad I think
I've done a six and a half hour flight there before yeah so it's really not too far for the fact that it's america it's probably the closest yeah yeah it's really not too bad i think i've done a six and a half hour flight there before yeah so it's really not too
bad the way back because you got the tailwind girl exactly you got that tailwind keeping you
propelled um georgia what's the best thing about coming home to barrow the people everyone's in
one place um so i've got three brothers and they all still live at home i bet they're so proud of
you as well yeah so it's so nice because the house is constantly busy.
There's people in and out all the time.
Obviously, when you're there, you've got to do the rounds,
so you've got to see everyone.
My parents have pretty much retired now,
so they're on a free schedule.
My mum's always travelling the world.
Oh, I love that.
And then my dad's in the hometown,
so there's always something to go back to.
Do they come and visit you a lot?
Yeah, they do, actually.
Yeah, they do.
They like it.
Lovely.
And is there a Lionesses group chat that you guys have?
Because I was feeling like that might be a way for you guys
to feel a bit less homesick.
Like, whilst you're away playing in your leagues,
do you have a group chat?
It's probably not the group chat that you're thinking.
It's more like information than banter.
Oh, so it's not like, hey guys, how's everyone feeling?
It's like, be here at 2pm.
Literally, yeah.
Lit.
Deadlines.
Does anyone accidentally ever send random messages in there?
The most random is probably Jill Scott, because she's still in.
She's still in there.
She just randomly pops up.
Hey guys.
So she's always jumping in with like, this company have offered me this. Does anybody want it? And it's like. You've got a bike in there. Was it a bike that was in there she just randomly pops up hey guys so she's always jumping in with like this company have offered me this
does anybody want it
and it's like
she's got a bike in there
was it a bike was in there once
oh chill
yeah she was giving away bikes
she was giving away
like random stuff
wait so Jill's some sort of
like game show host
she's like a plug
come and watch tight
who wants a new bike
I got some freebies
for everybody
you get a TV
you get a TV
shout out Jill we love you before we go do you want to play a game I got some freebies for everybody. You get a TV. You get a TV. Shout out, Jill.
We love you.
Before we go, do you want to play a game?
Go on, then.
Oh, gorgeous.
Give me a break.
American enthusiasm.
Give me a break, babe,
because you're probably not going to want to play it
when I explain it to you.
It's called the Euros Alphabet Challenge.
I'm going to give you a minute,
and you have to go tet a tet.
A, B, C, D, E, right?
But you're saying things
related to the Euros,
football or Switzerland.
I don't know my alphabet.
I will help you
with the alphabet, yeah?
But I'm not actually
that great at it
and I do forget
what letters go after
other letters.
So just bear that in mind
before we start.
Just anything at all to do with the Euros. anything at all um and i'm going to give you up to a minute to see
how well you do and i can't think of it okay i'll go first yeah away oh wait i haven't started yet steady go away B this is quick fire

Even harder when I'm at the side.
But it's hard when that's the subject.
Yeah.
Why?
I think you should have given us something different.
Because it could be anything in the world that you take to the Euros.
Well, I think that would be a bit easy, babe.
But then that's even harder.
My goal is not to make it really easy for you.
It's to make it competitive
and hard okay fair sorry you don't need to apologize to me you need to apologize to them
sorry people um Jess and Georgia it's been a pleasure for me I hope it's the same for you
um thank you for coming on that lionesses podcast connected by EE and thank you for joining us
because we've had such a pleasure being here with you.
Enjoy the rest of your training, ladies, and good luck with everything this summer.
We're just getting warmed up here. We've got more lionesses, more big moments, and maybe a few surprises too. Stick with us and we'll see you next time. Bye-bye.
Bye.
