Starting point is 00:02:14 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, Lex. Oh, this is my time. It's your turn. It's always my turn. Welcome back to the 85thous show. We are live backstage at One Music Fest, Backwoods, Backstage. So it's only right that we talk to.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Yeah. Tony, I brought back. Yeah. People always be asking me about my plug at Backwood. I don't never like to tell him about my plug, personal. Okay. But since he's here today, and he'll pop out that much. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Had to put them on. What's up, man? What's good, man? What's good? Y'all looking good? Thank you. Thank you for having us again. Hey, love having y'all, y'all family. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:03:02 We do this at these big events, man. Love having you guys here. It's just a backwards fan, man. Y'all extension of the brand. Absolutely. Now, I wanted to ask you this. It's been going on a couple of years with one music fest and backwoods backstage. How did that partnership come to be?
Starting point is 00:03:18 Look, when it comes, I mean, first off, Atlanta's like our unofficial home. You know what I mean? So this is like one of the biggest festivals that they have in Atlanta, we gotta do it big here. And so we started off smaller, but it was always with the intention to making sure that people get a glimpse of what goes on back here. And we just like to create a vibe, man. Backwoods is all about having a good time, creating the vibe, man, and giving people a glimpse of what goes on back here, man.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I want to go ahead and say that we actually pioneered Backwoods backstage. We was here first. Yay! We was here first. Now, I say it again. We was here. first. Yeah. I'm damn, man. You can't do this without you guys, you know, when we start thinking about who we wanted to bring in, who we wanted to partner with, it was a no brain on, man. You know what mean? But it's dope to see what it's grown into. Went from a little small little one-off. Now we've got
Starting point is 00:04:12 a whole section over here. Hey, if you ain't growing, you ain't producing, man. Right. So as a brand, we're always trying to evolve, get bigger and better, man. And we want to bring those that started it with us. Let them grow and get bigger as well, man. So you're just, Because y'all's platform has got bigger. It's only helped us as a brand, man. And we want to make sure that we give y'all,
Starting point is 00:04:32 continue to give y'all the platform to do what you do so great, man. Now, see, we've been noticing, y'all coming out with a lot of flavors. That's what I was about to say. You know, really been listening to the consumers, man. What does it take to make something like this happen? Yeah. Look, man, it's, we are a culturally entrenched brand. You said it best.
Starting point is 00:04:50 We listen to our consumers, man. We know our consumers love where they come from. They love to rep their city. So we wanted to have, you know, packs that kind of represent the city and embody all the culture that comes from these great cities, man. Whether it's Atlanta, whether it's L.A., whether it's New Orleans, whether it's Detroit, whether it's Houston. Y'all say how you own pack, you know what I mean? So when we go to the pitch meeting, how hard is it to get a flavor approved? I mean, you know.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I got a good flavor. Yeah. Barbecue bake beans? Barbecue baked beans. It's crazy. When you said barbecue, you should stop. Right. Because baked beans?
Starting point is 00:05:27 That's crazy. All right, all right. Beans is baking it too far. I don't know if we can be a barbecue baked beans. Okay. But you know, every flavor starts with some type of consumer insight, right? People have been asking for it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:40 And it's, hey, how can we go out and see if we can bring that to life in a cigar farm, man? So it's always back from the consumer insight. It's never like me sitting in the room saying, hey, man, let's just do this. You know? Right. Okay. But how did you start getting involved with Beckwood? What's your back story with that wood?
Starting point is 00:06:00 Hey, man, I always been a marketer, man. I always been a brand guy. And, you know, I always worked in tobacco as well for a couple years. So it just pays sense to come to this brand and lead a brand in which, you know, one year consumer. Right, right. But also that is a part of the culture in which I come from, man. And so I can authentically be myself and represent for the brand because I am a consumer of a brand. And I know, I think I have a good possible
Starting point is 00:06:28 with the culture once, man. Right. So it makes it very easy to run the brand, but also they give a lot of confidence to me that I'm doing the right things for the brand. Now, I want to ask you this. Like, prior to Backwoods becoming a staple in the urban community,
Starting point is 00:06:44 it was known as an old white man brand. How did you take it from an old white man brand to, like, what was the merger? What did it cross? Again, man, it's, you know, it's just part of the natural evolution of a brand, man. Certain stuff starts off some places, and then you see who the consumer is, and you just go that way, and you just want the brand to show up authentically.
Starting point is 00:07:09 So as hip-hop artists and so forth started to shout the brand out, and, you know, we started showing up in places like that, hey, we're just going to go where the brand is leading us, man, and just do it the right way, with the right people and the right partners. And again, I use the word a lot, but it's authentically about culture. That's what it's all about, man. How did you get them to trust you, man? I'm pretty what I do, dog.
Starting point is 00:07:33 You're showing up, beard it out, braid it up. Like, look, trust me, man. Sweet tea. Sweet tea, babe. Other and sweet tea, yeah. You know yourself, man. If you show the results, they can let you do what you're doing as long as the results of there, man. I feel like stuff like this, partners like you guys,
Starting point is 00:07:58 It's showing that my friend is resuscating, man, so they're going to allow me. The one thing about black people, it doesn't matter. The way you work, we're going to ask for the hookup. So do you get a lot of family, like cousins and uncles and shit? They be like, come to some backwoods. You know, that comes with the job, man, but always being responsible, you know what I mean? But, you know, that's the joy of this job, man, is that you get opportunities to engage with people. I get, you know, we got some cool-ass perks.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Yeah. I give that out, you know what I mean? I thought they wanted the actual bank one. They do. Can't get that out though, you know. But, you know, they still love a brand. I say go support it. You know, you go buy it in the store.
Starting point is 00:08:39 You have to pay my salary. Right. And then in return, I get to a good Christmas gift. Yeah. What's your favorite flavor? Personally. Our personal favorite flavor is just like everybody else. I love rushing cream.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Okay. It's the staple. Yeah. I mean, that's, that's it. Yeah. So if you had an ideal flavor that you could come out with that y'all don't already have, what would it be? Probably like, you know, more the fruity realm, like a mango, strawberry, you know. Like a little smoothie.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Tropical. Tropical. Yeah. Yeah. That would be fired. It might sound crazy, but me myself personally, I would want something more like a men. A man? You know, that works, you know, because...
Starting point is 00:09:31 Brush and cream. Then you slide over to the mint. That'll bring the hoop of smoke with the men. Yeah, fake. Yeah, like a winter mint all on my... Yeah. We're gonna bring y'all into the market of research meeting. You should.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And then, you know, traditionally, I like honey. Honey, traditional, man. Honey is a top five for us, man, is in the Mount Rushmore of... of top five backwood, brick, honey, original, banana, and special dark. Special dark? Yeah. Oh, okay. I like this.
Starting point is 00:10:14 He's a backwood kind of seal. Yeah, he is, as he should be. Yeah. Okay, I like that. This is intriguing. Me, rum cake. I want to try this. This is what we're going to try today.
Starting point is 00:10:27 We got to try. We want to try. We want to be stuff. We are. You know, I think flavors like this is going to bring the ladies in more. Especially southern girls. Because you know, like the pound cakes is like a big thing in the South. So, I'm excited to try to rum cake.
Starting point is 00:10:40 And rum cake, this is going to bring the Waguan. It is. One thing I did is, they already be smoky. I need backwoods to start making some random mistakes. I need y'all to start dropping six in the pack instead of five. Oh, yeah. Sometimes like a customer appreciation, like, Throw an extra one in there every now and again.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Yep. Make people feel like they want a golden ticket. Yeah. Great idea. It ain't gotta be every pack. That's every once in a while. Every once in a while, throw a six one in there. A little skimpy one, a flat one or something.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Like not a fully, you know what I mean? Right. I got you. I got you. I'm gonna bring you into the marketing meetings, man. I got ideas, man. We do. Sometimes you gotta make it look like an accident.
Starting point is 00:11:25 You get into a lot. I agree. Hey man, one music is going up tonight. A lot of classics being played. We are right down at a pretty rigged concert. We are. You are. Bobby Valentino and Ray J just got off stage.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Baby. Brought out of Sammy. Sammy. And it's like she thought it's serving all over again. And that was a good time. I ain't complaining. It's a great job. So if there's anybody you looking forward to seeing this weekend, who is?
Starting point is 00:11:56 Hey, y'all see the jacket? I'm a VA boy. VA, so the clips is here. Yeah. I can't wait to see the clips. Who. Bushman, Dallas. VA, that's the team, that's the home team, man.
Starting point is 00:12:08 So I'm excited about that. I love Jasmine Sullivan as well. Oh, yeah. And then lastly, man, I was in the old soul bookback, you know, bookbag back in the day, man. So the roots being here, that's added. Richie the peace, DiAngelo.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yeah, please. Richmond, hometown as well, man. So shout out. RIP to DiAngelo. as well, man, but, you know, I love, I love that whole vibe, man. Roots, DeAngelo, that Neo-Sou type vibe, man, I'm on that. But look, on behalf of all the media creators, influences that's here, we want the person to thank Backwoods for giving us a chance to extend our platform to be a part of my music festival, man. So just big salute to y'all,
Starting point is 00:12:52 whatever y'all got going on over there, we salute it. Amen. Thank you for stopping. Thank you guys. I mean, it's from the bottom of my heart. I couldn't do what I do without y'all. Because we have great partnerships, and they're real. I like to be here. I like to shake hands, see people put a face with the brand, and let y'all know that we truly appreciate it, man.
Starting point is 00:13:14 So thank you guys. Thank you. We appreciate you. For sure. Most definitely. I was going to say before we go. We know everybody's trying to party today, but we got one more. We got one more.
Starting point is 00:13:26 We got one more. Stop before you go. One more again, one more in. Fit check. Finchek. Fint check. Tell them what you got. What you're doing?
Starting point is 00:13:49 My name. Got some magic semester, George. Yes, sir. Big shout out to Niagara semester. My sweatpants. Kiff? Kith. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:00 And this is one-on-one. I do pillow and send the back with the cacklewold. So they call me half made. Put that on here by me play. Hey, man, Tony, aka. K. F.A. Backwoods, backstage. One music fan.
