This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
This is Dr. Jesse Mills, host of the Mailroom podcast.
Each January, men promise to get stronger, work harder, and fix what's broken.
But what if the real work isn't physical at all?
I sat down with psychologist Dr. Steve Poulter to unpack shame, anxiety, and the emotional pain men were never taught how to name.
Part of the way through the Valley of Despair is realizing this has happened,
and you have to make a choice whether you're going to stay in it or move forward.
Our two-part conversation is a little bit of a way.
Available now.
Listen to the mailroom on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows.

Hey, man, welcome back to the 2025 BET Awards.
You got them, Los.
I don't walked around this whole one.
I've been lucky just for a straight legend.
Yeah, ghetto legend, bro.
And I'm saying, bro, this dude right,
right here, I know he's been making hits since I was about them 12 years old.
Because when I was a young nigga on the phone, first holland, and you know what I'm saying,
you have some little R&B playing.
Come on, man.
Yeah, that's the word.
You already know.
Sutterly playing.
You had to have some immature playing.
Yeah.
And some Marcus Houston.
Man, when you, shit, dad, go right there.
You had to ask naked, man.
No, no.
Mr. Marcus Hughes.
You're talking about, man.
Man, I give you all your respect, bro.
because I remember all the way back to the immature days.
That's what's up.
Then they brought it back with the immature days.
Then you came by yourself.
That's right.
Then you had grown women getting butt naked.
We literally grew up together, bro.
Don't forget, sister, sister.
Yeah.
Go home, Roger.
How do you know?
42?
I'm 43.
That's what I'm thinking.
That's what it is.
Right there.
Come on, man.
Yeah.
ABC, all of that shit.
It was, man, we had moments.
Absolutely.
And you was all.
always the least singing,
I was,
I was.
House party,
house party, no,
three,
three and four,
house party two,
three.
Kid and play here.
Yep.
Johnny Booz,
the stripper.
Johnny Boos.
Johnny Boos.
And Johnny Williams.
And Johnny Williams and stripper.
And tell them the party's here.
Yep.
Tell,
and Johnny, she goes,
yeah.
Chris Tucker first.
Hi, man.
I'm gonna tell her, man.
I'm gonna ring a head, man.
That's what you want to bring a head?
Because they owe me some money,
man.
Two of my girls are getting him the carpet.
A car wreck.
Yeah, man.
Man, big salute to everything.
Thank you, thank you.
You've been doing your thing.
I appreciate it, man.
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
That's what's up.
That's right, that's right.
How to hell you been, bro?
I've been good, man.
I've just been working.
We, we hear, a part of the BET experience, it's an honor to be here.
You know what I mean?
We're promoting our new movie run.
Myself, Erica Minna, Erica Pinkett, Claudia Jordan, Annie Alonza,
you know, Ken Lawson,
Obababatune Day, it's an incredible thing.
Chris Stokes wrote and directed this movie.
We're putting it.
It's in theaters, only in theaters, August 29th,
so we're really excited about that.
August 29th, man, yeah.
We just want everybody to go check this out
as a sci-fi thriller.
You know, so it's aliens, it's running,
and it's real intense, you know,
so we're really excited about it, man,
and I'm just, I'm excited to be here,
a part of this, and to promote it,
and just, you know, I really want everybody
to go out and check it out.
Bro, sure.
I can't believe we,
sitting in here talking shit with it.
I'm so excited because I feel like
I still might get some of us
just because I'm on here with you.
Hey, you know, if I can help you do your
thing, then, you know, that's, I've always
been a part of that, you know what I mean?
You know, a lot of people coming to me like, hey, you
know, I had babies to your song naked.
I'm like, okay, cool.
You know, a lot of babies was born to that song.
So, you know.
You know.
I'm honored.
You know, I try.
And the acting to the other.
Yeah, man.
I'm in the same.
movie actually run I'm in it I executive
produced it wrote it along with Chris Stokes
and you know this is our you know
coming to the theaters you know
I just feel like you know a lot of
it's it's time for black people to get back to the theaters
you know it's important for us to be in the theaters
and it's for us to support each other
you know what I mean? Absolutely
sneak a little popcorn and soda
you know what I'm saying? We want to sneak shit
in there that ain't supposed to be in there
hot wings alcohol
pizza box all of that
pepperoni
making
challenges this emotion.
Soon as the movie, come on.
All you hear.
This is a little bit.
You know what I'm saying? It's all good.
Let's do all of that.
Y'all got a while open to back now.
Right, right.
You know what I'm saying?
Get a little champagne in the movies.
Hey, man, this one thing we always love to ask people who've been famous for a long time.
Yeah, yeah.
Because you got to be famous before social media.
Before all of that.
That's a different type of fame.
What was that fame hitting like in the?
You know, back in the day, it was cool because, you know, you didn't have so many people with so many opinions.
Like social media, everything now, everybody got an opinion.
Everybody can say what they want.
Everybody can, I mean, you could damn somebody that's famous and just.
Hey, man, fuck you.
You know what I?
That's some hateful shit.
But back then, you couldn't just do that.
You couldn't just get to people.
So, you know, I embrace it.
I think it's really revolutionary that we get to be so involved with each other now.
Like the artists and the fans, it's not.
necessarily that disconnect anymore.
You know, you could go to your fans.
The fans can tell you what they want.
And they can tell you what they like.
And I think that's a good thing.
It's for me being able to see, you know, the evolution of the industry of where it's come
from to now, I think it's great.
You know, I think it's that great connection that you get, you know, to really, you know,
get that feedback, you know what I mean, to what they really want to see.
You know, you can say, like, what do y'all want?
And they tell you what they want and you can, you know, you can deliver it.
So I think it's great
You got to be famous in a time
Where they had to shut the mall
You know
They had to shut the mall down
Exactly
At the time where everybody
Was going to the fucking malls
Absolutely
Going to the mall
You know
We shut so many malls down
Back in the day man
People were following you for real
Absolutely
Yeah not just
Not just
I just
Little girls
You know
Exactly
Yeah
That's right
That's what it was
You know
That's cold man
Beant T awards
2025, anything you're looking forward to seeing, doing,
person you want to bump into.
Have you seen anybody you ain't seen in a minute?
I ran into a lot of people today.
I haven't seen them in a lot of my radio friends.
Just a lot of people like, because I ain't been out in a minute.
You know, I've been in the trenches just grinding,
just grinding, popping out movies, writing, producing and everything like that.
You've been put up.
Yeah, you know.
You're put up in a nice, you watch it.
A nice home.
He said the trenches.
Now I take you to the trenches.
It's the work trenches.
You know what I'm doing.
That work trenches.
If you watch his move to the end alone, it'll be saying written, directed by executive producer.
I was like, God damn, we do the whole motherfucking movie.
You know, start him.
That's what I'm trying to do it all, man.
You know, just trying to, trying to, you know, create a nice, a nice future for my son and my daughter.
Let me ask you this, bro.
Because you did a whole lot of shit, like, before you was fucking 13, 14.
Do you think you did more work then as a kid or now?
Now, for sure.
Because that was like, you know, when you're artists, you kind of do artist stuff.
You go on the studio, you go on TV.
But like the work that I do now is more behind the scenes.
It's more structural.
So it's like it's everything.
You know what I mean?
Being an artist, still being out there, still being in the movies, still being behind the scenes, writing, produce it.
It's a lot more work now.
But I like it.
I love it.
You know, I love what I do.
Hey there.
This is Dr. Jesse Mills, Director of the Men's Clinic at UCLA Health and Hope.
host of the Mailroom podcast. Each January, guys everywhere make the same resolutions. Get stronger,
work harder, fix, what's broken? But what if the real work isn't physical at all? To kick off the new
year, I sat down with Dr. Steve Polter, a psychologist with over 30 years' experience, helping men unpack
shame, anxiety, and emotional pain they were never taught to name. In a powerful two-part conversation,
we discuss why men aren't emotionally bulletproof, why shame hides in plain sight, and how real strength
comes from listening to yourself and to others.
Guys who are toxic, they're immature, or they've got something they just haven't resolved.
Once that gets resolved, then there comes empathy as in compassion.
If you want this to be the year you stop powering through pain and start understanding what's
underneath, listen to the mailroom on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows.
A new year doesn't mean erasing who you were. It means honoring what you've survived,
and choosing how you want to grow.
It means giving ourselves permission to feel what we've been holding
and knowing that it's okay to ask for help.
I'm Mike Dolorotcha, host of sacred lessons.
This podcast is a space for men to talk openly about mental health,
grief, relationships, and the patterns we inherit, but don't have to repeat.
Here, we slow down.
We listen.
We learn how vulnerability becomes strength
and how healing happens in community, not in isolation.
If you're ready to let go of what no longer serves you
and step into the year with clarity, compassion, and purpose,
sacred lessons is your companion on your healing journey.

He ain't too far behind.
He did all this talk.
What Matthew Stafford is doing statistically, bro,
it's crazy.
Bro, you know I ain't no Josh Allen fan,
but Matthew Stafford got better weapon.
Caleb Williams.
Hey, he should be in that conversation.
In what conversation?
He should be in it.

The moments that shape us often begin with a simple question.
What do I want my life to look like now?
I'm Dr. Joy Harden Bradford.
And on therapy for black girls, we create space for honest conversations about identity, relationships, mental health, and the choices that help us grow.
As cybersecurity expert, Camille Stewart Gloucester reminds us,
We are in a divisive time where our comments are weaponized against us.
And so what we find is a lot of black women are standing up and speaking out because they feel.
the brunt of the pain.
Each week, we explore the tools and insights that help you move with purpose.
Whether you're navigating something new or returning to yourself.
If you're ready for thoughtful guidance and grounded support, this is the place for you.
Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Let me ask you this, since you were a child star, you're still a star, but I'm saying, you started at a real young age.
Like you said, you got kids now.
Yeah.
your own yeah are they are they like talented like they are they are the same aspect so my my

i'm not going to you want to you want to yeah if they want to they want to if they want to do
whatever they want it is and they they sing they dance they're definitely entertainer kids for sure
Definitely my little offspring.
So, you know, they love to sing and be a part of it.
And they just love it.
So I love watching them, you know, do it, you know, and just watching them grow.
And it's just an incredible thing for me.
It's, you know, that next stage in my life, being a father is the most important thing for me right now.
I remember somebody that was asking you, like, which one you love more, the acting or the music.
Is it still a bad?
It's just entertainment.
Yeah.
I love to entertain.
I love to tell stories.
I love to just do what I do.
And, you know, I think being an executive for me, it's just everything is stages in life.
And that's just the stage that I'm in right now.
And that's what's working for me.
That's the crazy part, though.
You've been added for so long, but you're still a young man, bro.
Yeah, I'm still, I'm still, we still young, you know.
They don't know that.
They don't know that.
We're young old.
We're young old.

We're going to go out, but we're going to leave early.
That's right.
You're going to bed.
You're not staying the whole time.
No, not at all.

With your band members
Actually I do
You know
I try to do that as much as I can
You know
But you know when you grow up
You know I'm a father
I'm a husband
And just you know
Just doing all of that
You have your own lives
And it's just
You know you try to keep up
As much as you can
But you know
Everybody's just doing something different
Man, what's next for you, bro?
You didn't get movies, TV, film, stage plays, world tour,
solo, group, albums.
Well, right now, like I said, run.
Run is it.
They can operate parachutes.
He can fix wheelchairs.
And they can read Braille.
Sign language.
Well, right now, we focus on run.
It's out in theaters.
August 29th.
I want everybody to make sure that you go support that.
Run.
You would put all your own stunts and shit?
I did all my own stunts.
Yeah, I actually did.
All right.
So this is incredible.
This is where we at right now.
And who knows what's next?
We'll just, we'll figure it out when we get there.
Hey, man, we got to do something.
We got to.
I don't know what it is, but like, like, all the people that I graduated with
and all the girls who, like, had you on their wall when I was calling their house, bro, it's time for us to link up and get some get back.
Absolutely.
Oh, that's going to be hard.
You already know.
But bring immature back and put me in it.
I always want to be.
in that goddreble. Never lie. I want to be on the beach with y'all.
Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
We had a motion back then. I was only 12.
We're sure. It's just like, y'all was some grown young niggas.
We was. We was.
Looking at y'all like, man, they do whatever they want to.
They ain't got a go cart, man.
They ain't got a go cart. With his name, airbrushed down his leg.
My grandmother thought I was in a game.
One time she's seen that shit
Why your name on your pants, let
That's how it had to be
You know?
Man, bro, we grew up in one of the best eras
We did, we did, absolutely
And for you to be able to still
Fuck with this entertainment industry
The way that you do
You definitely don't get your flowers
The way you're supposed to be
You know, the thing is
You were not wrong for Likin Tia and Tamara
Both of them
