Jay Owen, how you living tonight, bro? Yeah, I'm feeling real good. Got a potting on the couch. Hey, he's from my neighborhood. He's building bikes and tracks.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Whatever you like, we're going on trails. And even we be jumping off heights. Is that what you like? To all the niggas who can't fight, you better act like you on here what I'm saying and everything's all right. Hey, welcome back to the 8-9 South Show. Black Excellence, Spot Blacks.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Boy, we're doing our thing with this one right here, bro. I'm telling you, this Black Excellence, just finding all these excellent black people that got phenomenal things going on amongst the black community. Brough, so we've been getting bombarded with people hitting us like, bro, I'm excellent.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I know, because you're black. And that's excellent enough right there. But today, I got my... my dog in here with me, man. This is a cold dude, man. For what he does, I'm going to jump it to the paperwork because y'all ain't going to believe it if I said, bro. This guy sitting right here, it's John Sanders.
Starting point is 00:03:11 John Sanders. First of all, how are you going to not trust a nigga named John Sanders? His name's John Sanders. He's trustworthy. But this dude hit me on social media, show me some dope-ass bikes that he built. Man, he got these bikes that he built. He got these mobile art pieces, right?
Starting point is 00:03:27 It's not just bikes, bro. So he got his own custom bikes, man. So y'all show some love for that. That's big. You ain't seen... It's not a lot of black own... I don't even know what you call people who build bikes. Are you a bicyclist?
Starting point is 00:03:43 Now, that's the one of them who ride them. No, but he's a custom bike builder. And he's in here with us today, man, all the way out of Miami, Florida, man. Let's get some backstory. Tell me how you got started in this, man. Okay. Backstory, bro. So basically, like it said,
Starting point is 00:03:58 playing football at University of Buffalo. Shout out to the University of Buffalo. What position, bro? I played a corner in Strong Safety. They're just getting away scholarships, bro. It is it? You got to have a heart to play Strong Safety. Actually, I walked down and got a scholarship.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Word? That's natural talent. Flex on it. Correct me. Yeah, yeah, no doubt. So, like I said, I need to get to practice, and I didn't really want to wait for, like, the bus. Yeah, but I mean.
Starting point is 00:04:23 So, anyways, lame as hell. Yeah, yeah. Plus, it's cold, Buffalo. It's fuck. Freezing. So, I was like, you know, let me get a bicycle, so... I don't know how a bike was better than the bus, better. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:04:33 I didn't see where you was going with that one, but you had to get places. You know, with a bicycle, you can go anywhere you want. Man, a bus is only going to take you where it was everywhere in Buffalo. Yeah, but, you know, you got to make moves, man. You got to get where you got to go. So you was there. I wasn't. I got you.
Starting point is 00:04:46 You know, I get the bicycle or whatnot. I'm like, man, I can't take it to the locker room because it's just not right. You know what I mean? So I went on, painted or whatnot. And then my dog, Joe. You know, shout out to Joe, the barrow. Everybody got a partner named Joe, man. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Shout out to my partner, Joe. He over there. Your partner, Joe. Yeah, no doubt. And all your partner's name, Joe. Yeah, yeah, Joe. And all the average Joe's. No doubt.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And people who smoked Joe? No doubt. Joe off of Cammore, man, the coop. Check him out, bro. Like an excellent barber. But anyway, he was like, man, you know, you can't paint like that. You can't paint on the parts.
Starting point is 00:05:21 You got to take all the parts off. Long story, short. He took him to go bikes. It's like a little Buffalo, like, Buffalo like community bike shop long story short you know I went in every like Tuesday Thursday and Sunday and it was just like a sponge man just learning from everybody so take bicycles and like ring them in like fix them or whatnot yeah I'm saying so long story short you know what I'm saying I get back to the house and um
Starting point is 00:05:43 start over yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah so I get back home really it's my wife you know face she was just like stopped just painting bikes and just like painting for other people see that's the living stop right there and just talking about the importance of having a woman that believed and you're like, you could have just really been out here just paying shit, had she not said that? Where you meet at? I met her in college. How did you know she was the one?
Starting point is 00:06:07 Man, it was just that feeling, you know, just seeing her, you know, around and, like, she was very trustworthy from junk, so I think that's all it helps. Hell yeah, everybody needs somebody that can trust, especially a motherfucker who don't steal. Like, if your girl, if you see your girl
Starting point is 00:06:22 to the store, she'd bring your change back, whether you keep it or not, that's just show you, You're dealing with her? She held it down forever, man. That was up. Forever? Yeah. Since day one.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's up, bro? So she's like, you know, go ahead and make bites. So, long story, short, real flame. My grandma hit me up and was like, hey, check this wrestler out. I was wrestling in high school. That is the one who's random. No, but I'm going somewhere.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I'm going somewhere. I'm going to see her. Watch. Watch this. But you're just a random call from grandma. Baby, look at this rash. Yeah. She was like, check him out.
Starting point is 00:06:54 You know, y'all kind of look alike. and I was like, you know, that's kind of odd. All right, so I look him up, and I'm like, all right, you know, we kind of look alike, whatever, you know. Who is the wrestler? Jordan Burroughs. I'm about the wrestling loop. Yeah, yeah, no, he's a, no, he's an Olympian, man.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Oh, he's a badass, yeah, yeah, no, gold medalist. Check him out, man, black wrestler, he's a beast. You get him on here. Yeah, yeah. So he was like, you know, so anyway, check him out. My, then his fiancee hit me up, and she's, She's like, hey, I see you painting bikes. Like, I want to get something for Jordan
Starting point is 00:07:29 kind of special. Would you do something? I'm like, yeah, yeah, cool, cool. So I'm just like, wait a minute, hold on. Jordan, like, Burroughs? She's like, yeah, yeah. I was like, damn, my grandma was just telling me about this dude last week. Damn, that's crazy.
Starting point is 00:07:41 That's more than a coincidence. That's the universe moving. Grandma was on it. Always on it. She's been on it from day one telling me to go ahead and go after it. I appreciate that too. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:07:52 So. You do look like that, my man. for real so that's what pretty much birthed man yeah yeah had you not looked like that probably what did you end up doing for him like what piece did you well she said you know he likes gold because like I said he wanted to go medal olympics thing is 2013 and whatnot um and like American flag so kind of American flagged for him put some gold rims is like my very first first custom you know what I mean so I did that for him and like I said I moved back down to south of Florida and just wanted, you know, go out a little bit more and try to do that.
Starting point is 00:08:29 In 2020, a group of young woman in a tidy suburb of New York City found themselves in an AI-fueled nightmare. Someone was posting photos. It was just me naked. Well, not me, but me with someone else's body parts on my body parts that looked exactly like my own. I wanted to throw up. I wanted to scream.
Starting point is 00:08:52 It happened in Levitt Town. New York. But reporting this series took us through the darkest corners of the internet and to the front lines of a global battle against deep fake pornography. This should be illegal, but what is this? This is a story about a technology that's moving faster than the law and about vigilantes, trying to stem the tide. I'm Margie Murphy. And I'm Olivia Carvel. This is Levitown, a new podcast from IHeart Podcasts, Bloomberg and Collidoscope. Listen to Levitown. Listen to Levitow. on Bloomberg's Big Take podcast. Find it on the IHeart Radio app,

Get your tickets today. AXS.com. I'm just putting this blunt out. No, you got a great story, bro. What's some of your favorite pieces that you've been put together so far? So far. It's kind of, I'm like the Michelin Man, right?
Starting point is 00:11:22 Yeah. You make a tire or whatnot, you hug it, and he's like, you don't want to see it go. But I feel like everyone I do, I really like. You know, I tap in with the people. Also, yeah, yeah, what they want. So, I know, like, I did, like, a dark frog one. That was pretty funny, but the lady was out in Texas. So when I was paying, I was in Texas.
Starting point is 00:11:40 You know what I mean? So I was getting into it. So favorite piece, oh, man, probably had to be Sean Taylor piece. Okay. I did a piece for Sean Taylor, man. I know his people's. So they was like, everyone was making shoes. or, you know, hats, t-shirts, when you make something.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Right, that's why it was so crazy when you sent me this shot. Like, bro, this shit is dope as hell. Yeah, bro. You definitely need to be on the platform where people can see it. So do you do just, like, custom bikes, or do you do trikes or just, are you in the whole, are you getting into the whole thing? Yeah, well, actually, I want to tap into, like, electric as well. For real?
Starting point is 00:12:13 That's the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right, electric bikes are pretty dope. But pretty much fixies, you know what I mean, whatever you write, like road, you know what You said fixes. You were dropping the lingo in there like we know this. Fixies is like a fixed bicycle. So basically it's consistently moving.
Starting point is 00:12:28 I'm going to start calling the chicks who had the body surgery that. Oh, she'll fix it. She had to go get fixed. No doubt. No doubt. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, just pretty much, you know, stuff like that. But as far as the future for it, man, just keep on creating.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Probably move on to other avenues of painting. You know what I mean? I've also like painting airplanes too. You're an artist? Yeah. That's what so. Yeah, yeah. So everything's hand.
Starting point is 00:12:51 custom hand design so I come like I said come with the idea yeah just flow it out bro what's the what's the price range running you know black people want to know how much it costs man you got what you starting off that I got reasonable prices for you know what I put out because they're true one-on-one pieces would it be cheaper to bring a fix it like I bring you a fix it like bruh bring it back I got you yeah I could do that so you do kind of restoration too yeah yeah I refurbish it so you got something it's kind of like messed up or you want to paint it Yeah. I send everything down and get it back right for you.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Cool, man. Yeah. Like you ever find yourself like on something? Like you have to revert back to your real nigga, like you at the bike shop just going on a whole gig mode, like, wait a minute, I'm a real ass nigger. Hold on, don't get it. No, actually, I don't really, you know, I don't really rock with bicycle shops. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:13:39 No, because I can get parts, I get parts that they can't get. You know what I mean? I create what they can't do. You know what I mean? So I don't even worry about them. If anything, I go in there and let them fix on one. Yeah. And I take it and shit, you know, get it shipped out.
Starting point is 00:13:52 That's what's up, man. Well, I just hope you keep doing your motherfucking thing, man. Because it's just dope to see black men getting into other avenues, you know. Yeah. Do you run into a lot of black people, like, on that side of the world, you know, in the bike world? No, not at all, man. I think I probably met one other brother before. Let's start a bike team.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Let's do it. I mean, well, there's one down south. There's some cats be probably lingua, but JRS. No, we start our own shit, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. all the kind of bikes riding through. Like I said, it's mobile art, man.
Starting point is 00:14:23 There's things that are true, like I said, one-on-ones have never been seen before. And I feel like this is one of those industries that never really died out, but you are seeing people do more shit like that, like getting outside and riding bikes and stuff like that. Especially with the whole pandemic, you know, the pandemic when not, people, you know, start riding bikes.
Starting point is 00:14:40 And so I start seeing things move a little bit more that way. But I feel like people always need bikes, man. Man, while we're sitting here chopping it up, just right quick, let them know where they can. find you, check out some of your work and stuff like that. You can find my Instagram, J.R.S. Custom Bicycles. My website, JRSCustin Bicycles.com. Can you place orders on the website?
Starting point is 00:14:59 Yeah, yeah. As best it just hit me up, call me, because like I said, it's detail, right? So I got to know what you want. So it's giving me a call. You know, we can work everything out. So it's not just the bikes that you do. It's like you do art pieces also for like exhibits and just people who want, you know, art at the house and shit like that?
Starting point is 00:15:17 Yeah, yeah. It's like I said, it's versatile. So, like I said, if you want a piece at the house, I can paint it for you, you can hang it up on the wall. It's an art piece, you know what I mean? Or you can take it down and you can ride it around, you know? But I guarantee people are going to stop you, talk to you and actually where you got that from. So when people order you bikes and you ship it to them, is it like, is it fully assembled or some of assembly required?
Starting point is 00:15:37 It's probably about 80%. You know what I mean? So, just because package size or whatnot. But all you got to do is- That's one of the problems I'll be running into out of here. Packet size? No, that was too good to pass up. Who you are. But no, so it's like, you know, I'll build it up for them.
Starting point is 00:15:53 But all you got to do is put the front tire on and just a handle bar. That's pretty easy. Yeah, so even a novice could finish up. Anybody. I can't believe you ain't bring me shit, bro. I've been told you I was going to order something. You must have my money ain't no good. No, I got you, man.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Don't get it fucked up. This is not my only job. I got you. Well, we could do something, bro. I got a piece for you, though. You're mine. What you bring? So it's an 85 South type of concept, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:16:18 Hold up, man. What my knife? Anybody, what my knife? No, you don't want to use a knife, open it from me, because you know what the sensitive areas are. Oh, shit. Come on, bro.
Starting point is 00:16:28 J.R.S. Customs. There you go, man. What you bring us, man? J.O.N. You see this? You got your hand held out. I didn't even know this thing had a camera. Bro, we might sue you. You can't put this footage out.
Starting point is 00:16:45 We own this footage, bro. Can't bootleg this shit There you have it, folks We're gonna be looking for a new music director Find out this nigga's been bootlegging the show The whole time It's behind the scenes
Starting point is 00:17:01 On the scene Oh shit Bro It's kind of like Let me see No we, man This is crazy How the hell
Starting point is 00:17:11 We're gonna hang this up in the trap We might just have to lean that bitch up On the table or something That shit is hard No, you don't want to do that So here we go Nigger Do you see this?
Starting point is 00:17:25 There you go Bro I want the rest of that Yeah, yeah, yeah So it could be whatever you want, bro So It's gonna be an art piece for now Yeah, no doubt
Starting point is 00:17:38 How long are you in town? To like Thursday Bro, you got a We're gonna sing you to the bike show Yeah, I got you Yeah, yeah, yeah He got your custom shit here with you. Nah, but I can get whatever you need, man.

Starting point is 00:18:02 You can do that, bro. I want a custom basket on that, bitch, with some baskets on three baskets, two on the side and in front. I got you, though. You think I'm bullshit. I'm dead to fuck serious. Man, let's do it, man. Gold baskets.
