I used to, bro, especially in my quote-unquote drug when I was,

because I was trying to find myself.

When I listen to y'all music, bro,
it helped me wondering, like, I want to get some money.

So anything that was motivational to me,
I always made sure I kept listening to it,

How did all that start?
Square one.

I mean, obviously we solo artists, so we was out of kind of doing our own thing.
But we crossed paths, just rap hustling on our journeys.
We was in completely different chapters of our stories.
Like, I think the time we met, I was probably six years from signing my first deal.
And really was at the finish line of that.
And about to pivot into the independent space.
and then bro was about to sign,
it was like right before he signed the Interscope deal and whatnot.
Yo, Gadi was actually the person that ended up, like,
physically placing us in the same, you know, same room or whatnot.
But I had met his music a few months before, like, a couple different,
like, a couple different people, like, put me on his music.
So I was hip to it, and then God had actually made the introduction.
I was kind of on my last days in a partnership with him,
and he was trying to sign a trip at the time.
So he made the introduction
and it was really just like lightning in the bottle
kind of thing.
I mean, we talk about it on the album.
It's all.
On the outro is called Origins.
We kind of tell the story
in like song form and more detail.
But like right away, it was just,
you know, like I said,
I respected his pen
and that he was cold,
but actually working together
just came so easy as second nature
that we just kept, we just ain't
stop sent. I was going to turn in five and, you know, I want to say the whole shit was
initially a career idea to make it, you know, to make it a joint tape. We hadn't made it
as far as calling it stepbrothers or whatever we was going to do with it. But, you know,
we really was just recording songs. And at some point we looked like shit, we got quite a few
records and we only, you know, I want to say that was like the first studio session. That was like,
You know, that was our first time actually working with each other,
and we cranked out something by the music.
And, like, you know, the ball for our song.
Yeah, you know.
And we both realized right then that the chemistry was there,
and it was organic.
You know, when I first met him, I didn't say,
hey, man, let's do a shitload of the records together.
Like, you know, even though the song said,
we say, let's become best friends.
It should just, it built itself.
And since it happened and the way it happened, we just embraced it.
You know, instead of, I think in a lot of cases,
It would be egos involved.
I think, I don't know how it happened,
but when we met each other, there was no ego.
You know, it was, you know, it was genuinely us meeting each other.
And it was, it wasn't even meeting Stolito.
It was, you know, meeting Jermaine and him meeting Chris.
And the shit just clicked.
And since it worked, you know, we both viewed it the same way.
You know, why stop it if it's working?
Yeah.
And even early on, we knew what we was doing was unique.
Because in a lot of cases, when you see groups, they either started together, so they've been a group.
But when you see groups that get formed, they don't get formed from two people meeting.
They get formed from a producer saying, you know, I got this idea.
He'd go find one nigga from somewhere and another nigga from somewhere and some old niggas and put them together.
And then groups fall apart.
Because they get on the end and be like, I never fuck with that nigger.
Right.
I didn't even know that thing.
That was DJ Katz on.
That was DJ Katz on where you know that minute.
But for us, we didn't have that.
So I think that's why it worked, though,
because, you know, we met on our own terms, so to speak.
You know, it wasn't.
This is the most low-key nigga I know, bro.
This nigga came to my show one night in Nashville at Zane.
I gave the nigga a shout out.
Everybody in the crowd left.
They didn't believe that the-in-lawed.

it's like, you might have a story to tell this guy's got two different perspectives.

Because after I put that record out,
when I put it on you,
to. I didn't get to see him for the first year of his life.
It's, you know, so it got even worse.
But then, you know, as time progressed, it made it where
the sum made me able to financially take care of the people around me.
So the money kind of changed the narrative. I can see them now. I got to pay more now,
but I can see them now. So, you know, it was, you know, I looked at it like it was an even swap.
You shouldn't say that now you've got to pay a little bit more.
They'd be paying it like that.
They're probably saying, I heard what he said to me.
I want nine hundred dollars more money.

My perception of child support is different than it was when I initially got it on child support

You know, I still have to do what I have to do to prevent it.
And in order to do that, I got to help in that house.
Now, I can't physically be there.

Right, because when he turned, when he turns 17 and he can go do other shit, and, you know,
you know, you're only human.
It's only so much of your mama and I being able to pay the bills you can take
before you start trying to help your mama pay the bills.

but you get what I'm saying he's only gonna you mature and understand up in the past

I got to extend myself a little more and you know that's an ongoing battle because I got a wife
and a child by her.

a woman's never going to understand
when it comes to being a father.
And, you know, so for her,

she's sharing her husband.

What's the creative process when it come to doing it as a group?
First thing, first, we are always in the same room.
We call our step brothers, right?
Like, I don't see me no feature.

Like, I mean, he just did 24 albums and 24 months,
but for some of those, we might send it out for, like, solo stuff
because we're working on our own projects.
But for these, it starts were getting in the same room.
And, like, for this project,
did 17 songs
and the 16 of a major album
of it's like they're not
just doing anything
and throwing away songs
or it's like everything
we come in a certain pocket
automatically because
a big part of it is us pushing
each other. So I think
we start with
I guess beat selection and
a lot of that is nonverbal
like I can just tell when he like a beat
you know what I'm saying because he just
He'd be on the iPad.
Nah, it just...
Not initially.
Initially...
He'd be sleeping with his eyes on.
Yeah, I, you know, I chimed out of the conversation.
I'm, you know, I'm in the zone.
And the same thing for him.
For him, we get to standing up and pacing the shit.

If we're vibing with it, then we go with that.
If we're not, then let's go to the next one.
And some of the sessions
even involve the producer
being present
and they'll play a beat
which even that was odd
because when that happened
we picked the first beat

And then it was more so like, my first go around, first night,

I wanted to see him do more with it than I was able to do.

just an artist.

It was my label, Kool and Dre label, Interscope.
But that only happened because I sat with Jimmy Alvin.
and he understood that, you know,
wasn't a way to really maneuver out of the situation I was in.
And Jimmy was like, all right, you know,
I'm going to put enough money up.
They ain't going to have no choice.
What he taught me, I didn't know this until he told me,
but Interscope and Cash Money are both under Universal,
and Universal got a no-compete clause with their subsidiaries.
So when Jimmy put a number up,
he knew that cash money wouldn't match.
So since they wouldn't match,
Cool and Dre had to, you know,
It had to go with what makes sense monetarily.
But even then, that was the beginning of me playing my own ball then.
I knew none of this was in their favor because everything before that was, was in their favor and wasn't in mind.
So to try to make shit work, they went and got, they were doing a lot of dumb shit that I don't know what they thought was going to happen.
That first thing they offered me was a Lamborghini and a necklace.

And they, you know, they sat down with it. And I could respect that because he ran with
Wu-Tang. And what I'm expecting him to do was be pro fucking Dougie Fresh. Be pro
the whole New York idea. And he was against it as well. And then my relationship with
Marr, later they had, later they did, you know, the drop list. The drop list, I don't know
what it is now. But it used to be every September and December. So Mar hit me to the
drop list. He said that they was discussing it in September in my name.

and my studio surveillance footage is what helped my case

I was going from L.A. to Miami and back to Miami
I mean back to L.A. from Miami
I was standing condos and shit
but while I was doing all of that
I was really sitting in my studio
all none of your dates match up
because all of the dates you're saying I was flying
and doing all this shit

me. I can't be in two places at once.
So they looked at it. They're like, well,
you know, fuck it. It wasn't really.
They ain't making enough money from me for it to matter.

She told me, I counseled what they owe me for studio time.
And they'll counsel what I owe to them.
So when I got out of it, I was free and clear.
I told them send me termination paperwork.
They sent it to me, Koolandray, didn't know I had it.
So them niggis told me that since,
I got dropped from Interscope, that now I'm an epidemic artist.
I'm their artist now.
Back to them.

But, you know, I can read people that say whatever agreements we signed prior to this is void.
So I got the lawyers in it.
Once they got everything signed and sealed, I was like, man, you know, I'm good.
I'm going to do this shit on my own.
And then in the midst of all this happening, I'm watching Craig with the,
trash bag game and I think yeah the trashback gang in Grant Hart merch like he was doing
shit that I hadn't thought of I ain't know that was even part of this yet so I'm watching
that then I'm watching how he was maneuvering and doing it independently so from that I'm like
okay I kind of got the blueprint sitting in front of me I don't really got a start from
scratch trying to figure it out again I didn't just say hey Chris when you put the
that tape out where you, how do that?
How do you get that shit on Apple and all that shit?
He broke it down.
He told you, like, hey, man, I don't charge niggas 3,000 to be in the studio?
Right.
I'm charging niggins to be in the studio.
That's how I did.
That's what I'm saying.
From that, that was no, no, I gathered the tools I needed to be able to move afterwards, you know, from, like I said, from the relationship.
So our relationship was one I had going into that situation.
And then, you know, the Marr, the Mel, and Don Clemens, and shit, and Sauer was just fed up.
She said, oh, fuck this.
We ain't, I'm not, I'm not going through this shit.
Well, a nigga named Don and dressed like Craig got you the gun.
Yeah, and we share a birthday.
So, you know, we reach out every, uh, every August 20 and tell each other every birthday.
He wanted people he got like super inspiring shit to say.

So they were doing a lot of low-down shit
charging you for the studio and all this.

or insist that it has a hook on.

Long story short, we landed on Cilow doing the hook.
Cilow charged me a hundred to do the hook, a hundred to do the video, and wanted another
hundred to ever perform it.
And I, you know, I don't know Ciloh.
So I ain't feel no way.
He ain't like Craig said,

It's a complete fucking stranger.
And he's a legend.
So, you know, I am well,
just in case you have a cop,

I find out later,
Jimmy never said that.
That was their way
of taking ownership or the record.
They also went in
so they could claim publishing.
They put a sound,
they put a sound in the song
that no one can identify.
The only way you hear that sound is if you break the stems down, mute everything,
then you hear this one sound they added.
They added it through the whole beat,
and now they get a portion of the publishing because they co-produced it.

I found this out after we had to clear everything for less than my son.
