Starting point is 00:00:00 Globally, humans are facing massive problems that are widely ignored by governments and the media. Like personal space invaders. I've had it with these couples that sit on the same side of the booth. Yak mouths. Stupid stick figure bumper stickers. Almond milk. You cannot milk an almond. Hi, I'm Jennifer.
Starting point is 00:00:17 And I'm Angie. We call her Pumps, and we're the hosts of I've Had It. Pumps, tell the listener where they can find us. Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you get your podcasts. Nailed it. See you next Tuesday. All right, this show brought to you in part by SimpliSafe. Starting point is 00:00:51 Recorded live at Corolla One Studios with Adam Corolla and board-certified physician and addiction medicine specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky. You're listening to The Adam and Dr. Drew Show. Yeah, get it on. Doctors, board, certified physician, specialist. Oh, man, I got a good Mike August one for you.
Starting point is 00:01:17 This last weekend? Oh, yeah. It's good. Now... This one, Adam had a chance to walk into somebody else's hotel room this time. I was on the phone with him when he walked into an occupied room, or at least not cleaned. Yeah, I don't think there was luggage in there to swap rooms. I had a couple of good exchanges. know me know that I become very animated and drill down hard on fast excuses that don't track.
Starting point is 00:01:54 And most people think I'm that way because I'm argumentative and or possibly verbally abusive. You might become verbally abusive, but that's not why you're doing it. My greatest hope is to not repeat mistakes. You? Me and anyone else. Anyone who's in my orbit. I just don't look at that as a – I look at it as the opposite of a good life.
Starting point is 00:02:27 It's a lack of efficiency. Now, I have a general efficiency that is up to almost OCD level, which is if I'm like, you know, if I have to go, if I realize, oh, my notebook's in the car, I got to go out to the car.
Starting point is 00:02:44 I'm not walking from my office to the car without bringing something that needs to go in the car. Or bringing something toward the kitchen, some glasses or something that are in my office or something. I have a general kind of movement efficiency. And it's very prominent in me. So my wish is for the same mistakes to not be repeated. Most people and almost everyone under the age of 40 has just the kind of reflexive kickback, you know, not my fault, not my thing,
Starting point is 00:03:20 you know, whatever kids, it's whatever kids have. You know, you try to sort out all these complex things, but it's not that complex. It's what would a nine-year-old do? And the answer is that. Well, then that's what you're doing. Yeah. Okay. So that's people.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And people come up with interesting, very nuanced and kind of interesting ways of approaching this. Not lying typically, right? No, but ways to remove them from the responsibility of what happened. And they all do it. The younger you are, the more you do it because you didn't – you weren't – these guys didn't play organized sports. If they did, it was fucking soccer or something. But they didn't play football sports. If they did, it was fucking soccer or something. But they didn't play football.
Starting point is 00:04:05 And they weren't in the military. And they just didn't know how to operate on that level. And in those kinds of organizations where there is just no excuses. Right. Right. So they do little funny things like somebody screwed up some bio or something. And I said, you know, you screwed this bio up. And he said,
Starting point is 00:04:26 next time I'll triple check. And I thought you double checked. You didn't, you didn't check, but you shot to triple. I like that. It's good. It's for you.
Starting point is 00:04:39 It's, that was, that was a, an immediate interpretation of how you were going to react. So he wanted to push a little harder. So according to you, you checked, an immediate interpretation of how you were going to react. So he wanted to push a little harder. So, according to you, you checked, and then you checked again,
Starting point is 00:04:52 but you didn't check a third time, but Fred Armisen's name was still misspelled. Or something. You know what I'm saying? But you didn't do the first or the second check, but you jumped to the triple and now it's kind of off you because that's a lot to ask, that people triple check everything, right?
Starting point is 00:05:11 But it's good. It's good. And there's a version of that, and a lot of it has to do with kind of subtle wording. Yeah. Oh, sure. It's a little subtle. Sometimes when they fuck something up, they pluralize it.
Starting point is 00:05:27 They go, well, we didn't know what you wanted. I was like, we or you? And there's the basic standby five-year-old stuff where you screwed something up and you just go, I did my best. Or you say that somebody else did it. You just put it off. Or blame somebody else. So I would like this rectified. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:48 And that's why I get into it. But I'm a little flummoxed that Mr. August would have those traits. He does come from that background of organized sport. It's a good point. And he has a particular version of it, too, which is he will not back down, which is kind of interesting. No, his is more defiant than it is what the typical under 40 flower doesn't blame. He just gets immediately defiant, right? And he can argue anything for any period of time.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Do you think maybe that's a function of having had a football coach dad? So it's really oppositional defiance to his dad? And it wouldn't be the case if he just had played football? You know what I mean? I look at it as just kind of a wiring. He says an aggressive wiring. So he now know many, many, many, many years ago we were and probably our biggest argument was when we're going overseas and we had a, I don't know, 10 hour flight or something to Europe doing shows there. And when you go into Europe and you go through customs and everything. You need your itinerary.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Otherwise, they won't let you in. And I didn't – I was a little iffy on that. But they needed – Maybe certain countries or something. Yeah. They need to know where are you going, where's your plane tickets, where's your plane ticket home. We want your itinerary. Was that Great Britain? I think it was.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Yeah. And so I'd gotten on the plane. Everyone had got their itinerary because they needed their itinerary. And then at some point I'd fallen asleep on the plane or something. And then when we landed, I was searching for my itinerary, but I couldn't find it. And I was turning my backpack inside out. I was literally on the floor of the airplane thinking about it. Fell on the floor and, you know, that stupid airplane stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Yeah, yeah. Couldn't find it. Couldn't find it. Couldn't find it. Then got to the customs. And they were like, where's your itinerary? And I was like, I don't have my itinerary or something. Lots of suras.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And then at some point, Mike pulled my itinerary out of his backpack. Oh, boy. And I said, where's that been? suras and then at some point mike pulled my itinerary out of his back oh boy and i said uh where's that been and he said he said something like well it was on your seat and i didn't want it to you know get lost or whatever and so i said well jesus mike why don't you tell me you had it and he said you didn't ask that's good right it's like a comedy routine right because we then went around that park 35 times and how did he defend himself he just kept repeating you didn't i kept saying mike how am i supposed to know you're see me crawling on the floor of the airplane did he not know you were looking for that how do you know he's i said my how would i know you have it and he said i don't
Starting point is 00:08:47 know what you know i said but i don't you took it well you didn't ask for it i said but i don't know you have it he goes well i didn't know that how long did that go for that argument 40 minutes no about 40 minutes how'd you guys get over it he left his uh expensive jacket at the airport when we're in the taxi heading out and i just said good and then we were done because he was pissed that he lost his jacket he didn't try to go back or anything no to no we were like it was on the other side of security or something i don't. It's like we weren't going to get it back. Oh, geez. But now may have – He didn't blame you for that, for fighting with him? No, Mike wouldn't do that.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Okay. He stuck with his guns, though. I should have known. Well, it's two parts. I should have known he had the itinerary that I – I don't know why. He was crawling in your belly for it. And then he doesn't know what I know. So he's good.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Can't read your mind, Adam. No. Hey, speaking of minds, this show is sponsored by BetterHelp. This time of year can be a lot, right? It's the holiday time. People obviously feel stressed. They can feel disappointed. They can feel depressed.
Starting point is 00:09:56 They can be alone. All those things. And therapy can be an answer. It can make you feel grounded, give you tools to manage all that's going on. Of course, Adam and I have both been in therapy. I've obviously been involved in the treatment of mental health, been referring patients and family, friends to BetterHelp, been pleased with the services they provide. So if you're thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try. It is entirely online, convenient, flexible, no stigma. You're not running into anybody in a

Starting point is 00:10:40 So this is a multi-parter. So this is for this last weekend, yeah? Yeah. Okay. So we're going. I'm doing shows in Tacoma or somewhere. I don't know. Anyway, we have to get a layover in Vegas.
Starting point is 00:10:55 So we go to Vegas. We go sit in the lounge because they have a Centurion lounge there, and I can get to it. So that was nice. And then, Amy, was that on the thing the lounge yeah of course oh sorry oh we're gonna get we're gonna get on emmy's case be careful well because the lounge is not anywhere near southwest but you can get there yeah in 15 minutes and then kill some time so um we went there and we had a drink and a and something to eat and then we
Starting point is 00:11:28 headed back to the southwest side of the building and uh mike had the boarding passes because it was a connection flight he just had him um and you do it and you do it yeah i do you know i have it he has it so i go listen uh they're starting to board the plane. I go, listen, I'm going to take a piss. And I don't like using the – everyone should try to avoid the bathroom in the airplane for a million reasons. And a lot of them are for other people on the plane, too. If you've got to do your business, just do it and then get on the plane. Now, they're boarding.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Are you still at the centurion club 15 minutes away we made our way over to the this thing okay and uh everyone's boarding and i said i'm going to the bathroom you know just up the hall in the airport and i go to the bathroom and uh i come to the southwest terminal and everyone's on the plane. And then I go, oh, shit. I start to have a little anxiety. I got a lot of shut the door anxiety. You and I have been down that road too many times. I've been down it recently as well with a flight delay and a connection loss and shut out.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Like I've got a little range anxiety with uh with shutting the door so i'm like staying there kind of pat myself down where the hell's mike's got the boarding pass is that the boarding passes and i'm just sort of frozen there for a minute and where's my boarding pass mike's got the oh mike's on the plane can mike get off the plane then with the boarding pass it's kind of going through my mind and i'm having a little anxiety so i call mike and i go uh mike do you have the boarding passes and he goes no i left yours at the at the desk when you check in i i left it there i said okay um but next time i would appreciate it if you told me you did that. And he said. I did. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Why do you do that?
Starting point is 00:13:26 Why? Sorry, sorry. It came out of my mouth. I know. You had so much. No. You've come so far. I know.
Starting point is 00:13:32 It was a mistake. And then you just fucking went full. It's Tourette's. It's full-on Tourette's. Seriously. No, everybody does it. As I was saying. Everybody does it.
Starting point is 00:13:39 I know, but I shouldn't. Everyone jumps in. Everyone jumps in with an answer, which is a weird impulse when someone is telling a story. It is, and I know better. I know you know better, but everyone doesn't. And it's odd because as I was doing it, I was like, oh, fuck. No, he didn't say that. Okay, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:13:55 He did not say I did. I said, I would appreciate you telling me or texting me if you're going to leave this at the gate. And he said, I'm telling you now. Which that's the greatest. That's good. That's classic Mike. Perfect. Perfect Mike, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:18 It's 100% perfect. I mean, first off, I don't know what that, if I left your boarding pass, he's never done it before. Never. It's never. I've traveled the universe with Mike. He's never left my ticket at the gate. He's never done it. It would freak me out.
Starting point is 00:14:38 I'd send you 40 texts until you responded. Right. You got to get, I mean, you got to get him set up with the apps and stuff where you get just the boarding passes electronically. It happens like nothing. I try my best. Well, that was the next. That was the
Starting point is 00:14:56 next one. So then that's so perfect. Did you get on the plane and have a little talk? No, I wrote it down and started laughing because I was like, oh, this is funny. This is perfect. Yeah, he's telling me now. That was his answer.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Did you bring it up on the set that night? No, no, no. I just said I'll wait until I talk to Drew. This will be funny. Yeah, so I said I'm telling you now. All right? Yeah. Then when we were leaving Spokane or Tacoma, I can't remember which one.
Starting point is 00:15:29 My God, we're going to have a twofer in one trip. Maybe three, maybe three, two and a half, two and a half or three. Right. Then we're leaving and we got a 625 flight. That was on a Monday. Do two shows, get back to the hotel, 11. Got to meet in the lobby. We got to be in the car at 5 a.m. Because the airport is 31 minutes away, we got a 625 flight and we got to check a bag so the reality is is we should have left at 4 45 but when you're yeah but when you're walking your room at 11 psychologically you don't want it to start with a four. You want it to start with a five.
Starting point is 00:16:25 That's true. It doesn't sound like you, though, to hand over that extra 15 minutes. That was you, right? No, we all agreed. Okay. We'll do this. All right. We'll do five.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Yeah. And the guy who middled for me, Rudy, he had the rental car, and he came around and got us. And I came down there. I knew that at 5 a.m. and I'd wazed it to the airport. It was 32 minutes or whatever with a 625 flight. We didn't deliver. And we were checking up merch back. We didn't have a big window to get in there at all.
Starting point is 00:17:04 But I still said, everyone just said five. And that's the way we roll. We do it that way all the time. So Rudy was there a couple minutes to five out in the car. I got there right at five. Is this a rental car? No, we don't have to drop it off. Rudy's dropping us off.
Starting point is 00:17:24 So if we had to do the rental car, we'd do it at 430 in the morning. So then Rudy's out there. I come walking out. It's 5 a.m. And Mike's not around. And I go, here's how it works. Mike is in the car. Rudy's in the car.
Starting point is 00:17:42 I come out last. And when I come out, typically's typically it's like five or two or something. But Mike's not there. So I'm like, oh, shit. Yeah. Mike's never a minute late. And this means something's up. And it means he didn't he didn't check his alarm or something. And now it's a weird spot
Starting point is 00:18:06 because our window to leave and make this flight is right now. And if we wait even seven minutes we're going to be fucked. So I call Mike
Starting point is 00:18:22 at it's like 4.49 or something, 4.59 or something. It's right at 5 o'clock. And I just call Mike. And Mike picks up his phone, but he doesn't sound himself. Uh-oh. And he sounds something, and he's like, don't worry, I'm coming down, you know, whatever, and just kind of hangs up the phone.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Mike comes blowing out. It's like 5.04 or something. Like he, we added, every minute was super tight, as I'll explain later. But he only added about three, four minutes to the endeavor. It just was out of character. It was, something was wrong. And so then I said, what happened? He's like, oh, wake up call.
Starting point is 00:19:03 He always complains about the wake-up call. Fucking wake-up call. Wake-up call. He passes the guy who said he was going to call him. But they never call. He doesn't every... No, sorry. He doesn't do it every time.
Starting point is 00:19:16 It happens semi-frequently that they whiff on the wake-up call because why wouldn't they? Does he not carry an iPhone? He has an Android android does it not have clocks and timers and alarms i had this conversation with him three weeks ago on the road i said mike nobody knows less about a phone than me nobody and i can do this but i set my alarm they don't do the wake-up call thing anymore because everyone carries a clock in their phone. Mike called the guy and he said, is it automated?
Starting point is 00:19:53 And the guy said, nope, I'll just do it. But you're the lowest. You're working the graveyard shift. You know what I mean? The guy was like 23. He was like, it's no fucking. First off, everyone whips everything now yeah everything so there's no what i said mike well then what happened he goes i just woke up on my own like two minutes to five or something and i said but mike you have to use
Starting point is 00:20:21 your phone that that's what i I already had this conversation with you. This is insane. Wake up call. They, back when there used to be wake up calls, they'd whiff on the wake up calls. Now they really whiff. And by the way, Mike, this is Mike's lament. Many trips that they whiff on the wake up call. I said, Mike, you have to use your phone.
Starting point is 00:20:43 And he said, I don't trust the phone. Oh, my God. Wow. Wow. But he trusts the process that always lets him down, is what I'm saying. Yes, I get it. That's incredible.
Starting point is 00:20:59 That was a good one. And there's another one? Yeah. Well, this one falls under the heading of i'm curious what you think of them i'm never gonna forget i'm telling you now i'm gonna use that somewhere that's good right that's a great one i wonder who the hell accepts that just walks away oh okay thanks you know there's a herman's Hermits song called I'm Telling You Now. Oh, wow. Do you know that? No.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Let's hear it, Emmy. Emmy, look up Herman's Hermits, I'm Telling You Now. Now, I'm telling you now, you're going to know this song. I'm sure. But you don't know it now. Not off the top of my head. By the way, we flew with Yes into Burbank Airport the other day. I was like, oh.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Yes, the band? Saw you guys in 1973. What airline were you on? Southwest. Wow. Where did you go? You know, I beg your pardon. I ran into them in the airport at the baggage thing.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Oh, okay. Because they don't seem like a Southwest group. Maybe. All right. Let me tell you about SimpliSafe. Starting point is 00:23:04 Simply safe.com slash Adam to there That's simply, two I's, simplysafe.com slash Adam2. There is no safe like Simply Safe. Alright, I'm telling you now. Herman's Hermits. Oh my God, look at that. Is it recent? Probably, yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Wow. I'm telling you now. I recognize it, but it goes under just a Herman Hermann song. You know what I mean? I couldn't distinguish it from some of their other stuff very well. They all kind of sound like this. Yeah, well, we'll find the whatever. It says Mike was singing this to me on the Southwest flight. It's got to be weird. Okay, I'm good.
Starting point is 00:24:21 The studio version's a little more melodic. It's kind of weird to have been a musician your whole life and have been through the extreme ups of the 60s and 70s and now still be going out on the road and performing. It's got to be weird. It's so many, I mean, such massive difference in what their position is in the culture, so to speak. Weird.
Starting point is 00:24:47 To the point where my reaction is, oh, why are they still doing it? I guess people want to hear it. But it's just, I don't know. I really wonder what Gen Z thinks when they see that stuff. For instance, you and I didn't have Glenn Miller playing live, although I did see Tommy Dorsey in 1980 in San Francisco. Really? Isn't that weird? That is weird.
Starting point is 00:25:12 He was at the Fremont Hotel. I was in San Francisco. It might have been 1981. And there he was. And there was like five people in the room. Wow. And it was a full orchestra, full swing band. He must not have.
Starting point is 00:25:27 He was old. Yeah. He was old, but he was playing his trombone and he was dancing. Wow. I'll not forget it. Wow. Yeah. And so this is the same thing.
Starting point is 00:25:38 And I remember at that time thinking, oh, man, how weird that he's doing this. But I'm glad to see this. Isn't that something? Well, as we get older, I think we all hope people appreciate us. All right, can you find it, Emmy? I thought everything was just on the internet these days. Right, right. That song is the only song that's not coming up on their playlist on Spotify.
Starting point is 00:25:59 The only thing that comes up that's close to it is I'm Into Something Good. There's got to be a reason for it. Either that's not the name of it or something's up. Or like a movie used it and bought all the rights to it or something. Oh, maybe it's Freddy and the Dreamers. It's covered by Freddy and the Dreamers. Maybe that was the hit version. That's the first one that came up, yep.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Oh. So was it a Herman's Hermits song that was covered by Freddy and the Dreamers? Or was it a Freddy and the Dreamers song that was covered by Herman's Hermits song that was covered by Freddie and the Dreamers? Or was it a Freddie and the Dreamers song that was covered by Herman's Hermits? Okay. It's no bigot's hit, apparently. Freddie and the Dreamers. All right. I screwed up.
Starting point is 00:26:32 But it's weird that Herman's Hermits covered it. Isn't that weird? It's Freddie and the Dreamers. Sorry. Who sound exactly like Herman's Hermits. All right. That. Then put that on the screen next time.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Sorry. Because I was confused. I can get, so we'll hear that one. I'm telling you right away. I'll be staying for many a day. I'm in love with you now. I'm telling you now. All right. Anyway, had another weird conversation with Mike, too. That's only half.
Starting point is 00:27:17 About what? Well, then we got to the airport, and the airport was fucking packed. And we were flying Alaskaaska it's five in the morning 5 30 now yeah that trip yeah yeah it's 5 30 in the morning and that and that the place is packed right and there's a long and amy i'm gonna need you on this one there's a long line to check the bag we have a merch bag and there's a long line to check the bag um and it's way too long for us to check the bag and make the flight yeah right but there's kiosks where you can do your own bag check you print your own label out and throw it in the pile and then you could check
Starting point is 00:27:59 your bag and get on the flight so mike goes to the kiosk and he tries to fire up the kiosk but the kiosk needs your boarding info it needs your the code the code it needs the code yeah and mike doesn't have the code and you guys got to join the 2020s it's like it's all on the phone i know i know i know so then we're we're unable long story short we're unable to check the back okay so we're driving back driving back sorry from the airport but i mean you got it you got to go rebook and everything or that's it we're driving back from the airport i know just listen okay all right i'm saying to mike i go mike um we gotta we gotta make sure next time uh with uh our phone or the the boarding pass or whatever we need to have that that information so we can check the bag and he goes that wasn't the boarding pass i go uh
Starting point is 00:29:01 well okay not the boarding pass but the the bag, you know, to check the bag. Well, that's not the thing. I go, okay, I know, but we need that on the phone so we can check the bag. He goes, yeah, I know, I had to try to use the kiosk, but the kiosk, I wouldn't let you use it unless you had your tag code. And I go, yeah, I know. I mean, first off, what do you think I'm saying? What do you think I'm saying? I said, I don't know if Emmy, can he send it the night before?
Starting point is 00:29:36 He's like, well, you got to do it 24 hours or whatever. I was like, I would have to just tell Emmy to send it to us the day before or that evening. You know, the five o'clock the day before or something or something. But he keeps going. And then he goes back to, no, you know when people tell you stuff where you're there? You know what I mean? Like the line was so long at the check-in. And then I went to the kiosk and we didn't have the boarding.
Starting point is 00:30:03 We didn't have the tag on the info on the thing. And I was like, yes, I know what happened. We got locked out because you didn't have your info on your phone. This reminds me of that David Allen Greer bit that Naren made a cartoon out of when you're cross-talking with him while you're in his ear. It's perfect. All right. So what is that?
Starting point is 00:30:25 I mean, can you just send it the day before or something? Yeah, I can check you guys. Mike should have checked. No, no, no. No, no. Mike should have checked us in. Put the locator codes on the itinerary and text it to them. Don't check them in.
