Starting point is 00:01:59 and addiction medicine specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky. You're listening to The Adam and Dr. Drew Show. Yeah, get it on, get it on, man. Get it on, man. Thanks for tuning in. Thanks for sharing. It's a very sexist thing to say, Adam. We love that about you.
Starting point is 00:02:18 How come no one ever takes that on? They're done trying to fix me. No, no, I mean the word man. Man. No one ever goes, hey fix me. No, no. I mean the word man. Man. No one ever goes, hey. Hey, man. I want to thank GetShipped.com slash ADS, LifeLock.com promo code Adam, and True Car as well.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Drew. Yeah. All right. We're going to do some role playing. Ooh, here we go. Now, okay. You've got to promise not to be super critical, but go ahead.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I'm only going to be critical if you act like an asshole. Well, I don't know how else to be but an asshole. In your eyes. So I know I'm going to disappoint you. So let's just prime it with that. We're going to do,
Starting point is 00:02:59 but don't... Maybe you can coach me up. Coach me up. Don't intentionally torpedo yourself. I don't intend to. You say that. You say that. So coach me up. Coach me up. Don't intentionally torpedo yourself. I don't intend to. You say that. You say that.
Starting point is 00:03:08 So coach me up. Help me. I'm going to have a simple request for you. Yeah. I'm going to do a phone call. Okay. A pretend phone call. And then when I hang up, you have to be the interested person next to me saying, well, what'd he say?
Starting point is 00:03:27 Okay. Am I to make any deductions about what was on the other end or anything or just get interested? Just interested? No. Just going to be interested. Okay. Got your line? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:39 We'll do some jokes for the kids over here. We'll do some jokes for the kids over here. That would be Matt and Gary, because this was a joke that was in like every single sitcom from the 60s and the 70s. Yeah. I pick up the phone. Okay. I'm talking to the person on the other line. We're in now?
Starting point is 00:03:59 We're in. Okay. Huh? You don't say. You don't say. You don't say. You don't say. All right. Bye-bye.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Hang up. Well, what did he say? He didn't say. Every variety show, every sitcom. It must have been a vaudevillian joke. And at some point in the 70s, somebody just went, look, why write new jokes when they have all these jokes from vaudeville that we could just use here on like the Sonny and Cher hour and all that kind of stuff. And then at some point somebody would go, they use that joke on mod and they'd go, did it get a laugh? Yeah, it did. Well, OK, then we'll do it.
Starting point is 00:04:46 They had like seven jokes. Just be the same joke. Be the same premise. Mother-in-law's coming. Oh, boy. Mother-in-law's coming. She's staying with us. She'll give her the white glove treatment.
Starting point is 00:04:58 She'll come in. She's going to drag her. She'll put her white gloves on. She's going to drag it on the door jamb on top of the molding. You know what that's like, right, Drew? It's always clean. When the older lady comes in the house. It happens every time.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Put that thing on. And the wife would be super worried. Super worried. Because nothing's good enough. Right. She's not good enough for the mother-in-law. Yeah. There's every sitcom.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Do you know what's weird? There's three. Hold on. There's three premises. Yeah. There is basically mother-in-law's coming or big client coming in. There's a big client
Starting point is 00:05:29 that's coming in. Larry Tate. Larry Tate's telling the... And they insist on having dinner at your house. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Have you guys ever had anyone insist on having dinner at your house? You got to remember, that was symptomatic of the fact that we, no one went out to restaurants.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I know. They just didn't do that. Yeah. Like the fact that no one went out to restaurants. I know. They just didn't do that. Yeah. Lynette would be like, oh, Mr. Tate, so what, more kookaroo? I'd be like, no, it's got to be a no-no. And by the way. He loves your spaghetti and meatballs. Then there was souffle humor.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Oh, always. That went all the way through the Brady Bunch, right? Souffle in the oven. Don't slam the door. Oh, open that. You'd open it because the souffle had the oven. Don't slam the door. Oh, open that. You'd open it because the souffle had to rise. And if you slam the door, it would drop. It was a lot of souffle humor.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Yeah. Now, listen, don't tell me those guys weren't just ripping off each other's jokes all day. It's not like, well, organically, souffle humor just became popular in 1973. Like, no. Somebody was watching someone else's sitcom and just went, eh, it's good enough. We're the Brady Bunch. We're Gil Gonzales.
Starting point is 00:06:33 My name's Sherwood Schwartz. Really? Do we have to reinvent anything or can we just do some souffle humor? I have a suspicion that he was more like an enthusiast. Like, oh, that's so funny. I'm going to use that too. I love that souffle humor.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Because he seemed that sort of – I don't know if deranged is the right word. Sherwood Schwartz, if you look up his IMDb, he was the live action Sid and Marty Kroff. Like he was the hackiest hack that ever lived on a highway. Had more success than probably anyone other than – He was the hackiest hack that ever lived on a highway. He has insane hackitude. Colossal mammoth hack. I mean, right up there. Sid and Marty Kroff.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Sid and Marty Kroff. The two greatest vacuums of creativity versus made money. Like, you know, you do that thing where like, who's made the most money and been the least funny? And you go, Drew Carey? I don't know. Like who's, Drew Carey's never made you laugh, but he's made millions and millions and millions of dollars. Oh, no. No, no, Drew.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Sherwood Schwartz. Sherwood Schwartz. Sherwood Schwartz has printed money. $175 million net worth. And all he's done is scrambled people's brains. All he's done is made a generation dumber. Let's look at the TV lists. Yeah, sorry. Very Brady, whatever.
Starting point is 00:08:04 As a writer or what writer producer island it's all there gilligan's island the brady's very brady whatever harper valley pta brady it's all the brady girls get married the brady's go to hawaii the brady's go to jup The Bradys go to Jupiter. The Brady bunch goes to Gilligan's Island and plays the Harlem Globetrotters play the robots. Oh, my God. He did It's About Time. I don't even know what that is. It's About Time. It's About Space.
Starting point is 00:08:35 It's About Two Men Who Lost Their Place. You don't know that show? No. But if it resided on top of Hack Mountain, then Sherwood Schwartz was the proprietor. I mean, this guy. Is my mother in the car in there? Is that him? This guy just shit out content.
Starting point is 00:08:54 That's all he did was wild junk. And there would be no such thing as a Sherwood Schwartz in today's environment. Oh, my God, no. He'd be laughed at at every fucking pitch meeting ever. I thought he did, like, Hogan's Heroes, too. It's kind of those kinds of nutty. Hogan's Heroes was high art compared to what Sherwood Schwartz was doing. He was figuring out a way to get robots to play the Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Oh, my God. God, was that guy a hack? Who's hackier, him or Sid and Marty Kroff? Sid and Marty Kroff is just more deranged. Just deranged, yeah. Just shit out the worst stuff ever. Oh, my God. You've got to find...
Starting point is 00:09:50 Oh, there it is. Here it is. Here it is. Okay. Bob Hope Show. Ozzie and Harriet he did. That was not that... I mean, it was just because it was new.
Starting point is 00:10:00 It was not as hacky. Now, here's a writer for the radio version. Okay, okay, okay. I Married Joan. I don't's a writer for the radio version. Okay, okay, okay. I married Joan. I don't know if that has a red skeleton. Give me the opening sequence on It's About Time, the little theme from YouTube. You'll be surprised that I knew the theme song. Also, you know, it's not a coincidence that those guys, like, you know, when somebody says,
Starting point is 00:10:24 it was like the funniest thing ever. Like when somebody was trying to tell me about Sid and Marty Kroft, like, those guys are still working today. Right, here are your choices for Sid and Marty Kroft. Dust off a piece of shit that you crapped out in the 70s or do nothing. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:38 There's no such thing as you creating new content. You can't do that. You can license Sigmund and the Sea Monster. You can re-animate a piece of shit that should have never been made in 1974, but there's no such thing as you guys creating new content.
Starting point is 00:10:55 You can't compete. Behold. You can't compete in that world. Sorry, go ahead, Gary. It's about time. It's about space. About two men in the strangest place. It's about time. It's about space. About two men in the strangest place. It's about time. It's about flight. Traveling faster than the speed of light.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Now, this had an interesting cast. It was like Imogen Coca. They're people from Car 54. Where are you? You know what I mean? So it wasn't as horrible as it appeared. Pass an armored knight. He's going back and forth. as horrible as it appears. He's going back in time.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Oh, I see. They're going back in time. And they went into space. They go back in time. And, oh, they end up in caveman time. Yeah. Well, if you go to Sid and Marty Kropp. It's always about astronauts doing something stupid.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Well, the good news is almost everyone's dead. Joey Ross. He was the guy. Ooh, ooh. Yeah, that guy. That guy. Boss. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:12:04 All right. If you... Look. Oh. Sid and Marty Kroff did Far Out Space Nuts. Do you remember that one? Yes. If you do Far Out Space Nuts, it's another pile of shit in space, this time by my hero, Sid and Marty Kroff.
Starting point is 00:12:18 But let's remind ourselves, the reason that we know what these things are, there were three networks, and this stuff was crammed up the entire country's ass. No competition. So we all watched it. I mean, literally, the rating for that show we just heard would have been a 16. Whatever the Oscars were last year. Sorry. Ready to chart the stars To go where no one's ever gone I know preparations were almost made Breakfast
Starting point is 00:12:52 Lunch It's Bob Denver. That's right. I said lunch, not launch! I said lunch, not launch. I said lunch, not launch. I said lunch, not launch. Is this pre... Bob Denver and Chuck McCann. Oh, I got a pint of it.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Oh, no. Is this pre-Gilligan's Island? No, this is post. Post. This is a network TV show, everybody. They weren't on the same metronome we are today. All right. Now.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Space nuts. All right. Wow, it's like five shows? I don't know. It seemed to be on for a little while. Hey, David, 27 from Phoenix. Holy snap, I'm on. What's going on?
Starting point is 00:14:01 Okay. It's an honor. First of all um mayonnaise i remember um i got it from uh geo the podcast yeah the main man man i'm your main man man mayonnaise main man mayonnaise it's my main man mayonnaise yeah blick the slicker blicker blicker blicker blick tech nine uh my only mac 10 yeah um so my question uh i have a couple questions but my main question was what do you guys think about the new uh love line what new what new love line do you know is a new love line uh wasn't amber rose hosting like yeah yeah that went away
Starting point is 00:14:39 yeah i think that's gone oh it was it is and and then you remember when you used to talk about I think it was Marcel he would go on with his chains and stuff and he would describe him as a doctor that's who they have now they do not have Dr. Marcel no way no no they don't have Dr. Marcel they have the description Adam would say
Starting point is 00:14:59 the guy with the gold chain and you know the way he would describe him well hold on a second let's see if Gary will find the new love line, and then I'll give you my feelings about that. I think it did, in fact, go away. Yeah. If your business earns millions or tens of millions, listen up. NetSuite by Oracle just rolled out their best offer ever.

No interest, no payment. Take advantage of the special financing offer at netsuite.com. netsuite.com. netsuite.com. To get the visibility and control you need to weather any storm.
Starting point is 00:16:09 That's netsuite.com. Ooh, Drew. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Hey, boss. Ooh, ooh. Here's how you know I have the full-blown Asperger's. Oh. When someone says, like,
Starting point is 00:16:24 Oh, what do you think about the new love line or what's going on with the love line how about a love line without you i go uh i don't know let's always never think about it and they go but what about you and love line and legacy of love line i go i don't think about it but i didn't create love line i did co-create the man show man show did a fifth season without me and I created that show. And people say, what do you think about the new Man Show? And I go, I don't know. I'm not involved.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Not involved. They'd go, yeah, but how does it feel having them taking your show and doing a fifth season of your show? And I was just like, I don't know. It'd be good to get paid. I was going to say, to be fair, Loveline was not our show. It belonged to CBS. It belonged
Starting point is 00:17:10 to K-Rock. We were hired hands. Most people would feel more attachment to something. Well, you and I, here's the problem with you and I. We don't have any attachment to it because it involved us.
Starting point is 00:17:26 You know what I mean? Yeah. And I was also like, well, we did The Man Show and we did 100 episodes. And now Joe Rogan and Doug Stanhope are going to do 20 episodes or whatever it is. And by the way, when you think back to that pairing, they could have done something really interesting and cool with those two had they not just tried to make them Adam and Jimmy. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:17:50 I didn't even examine it that far. I would occasionally watch it and I would think, oh, there's some stuff that would seem funny. And then also they kind of missed the spirit of it. Nobody really knew the spirit of it. It was much more self-deprecating and much less chest-thumping. But either way, and leave it to the executives and all the suits to not really capture what it was, why people liked it. Well, that's interesting.
Starting point is 00:18:17 The same thing with Loveland. We kept trying to explain to people what it was, and they just never figured it out. Right. But I did – they did two 11-ep right but i did uh they did two 11 episode seasons oh they did two seasons it looks like it i mean you guys did four right yeah there's a season five and a season six or sometimes they just lump them together or wikipedia they're cutting them up separately as a five and a six down here at the bottom. I think I remember that. It's kind of weird because we'd always do 20, 26, 22 episodes or whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Anyway, I don't know. I don't have feelings about what is or what was so much that involves me. It also doesn't make sense to me. What am I doing? Wringing my hands? We tend to move on and get to the next thing.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Well, there's no money in it for me. And it's not like an ongoing litigation or lawsuit or something. It's just like they're doing it and I'm not. And then we're moving on. I have some emotion. I understand that, Dr. Spock, you have none. But even so, it involved us. It wasn't in belong to us. So we tend to not think very highly of things that we do. And so it involved us. It wasn't, it belonged to us.
Starting point is 00:19:25 So we tend to not think very highly of things that we do. And so we move on. We do the next thing. Yeah. David. Yeah. Yeah. Um,
Starting point is 00:19:35 I had another question. Um, so I don't know if I was ever diagnosed with, um, ADHD for Dr. Drew, but, um,
Starting point is 00:19:43 I have drinking beer since I was about 12, and it seems to have calmed it down. But when I don't drink beer, I don't feel as stupid, if you will. I feel more alert on beer. Well, you maybe feel less anxious on beer. And that, you know, do you get out of control with the beer or how much are you drinking? No, I mean, like, I've done coke and I've done weed, but listening to the old love line, I've seen how the addiction grows, but it's in my background, like you say.
Starting point is 00:20:15 But I never got addicted to coke or weed. I let it go with a phase. Thank you for that information. Thank you for that information. Let me ask the question again. How much do you drink? Do you know what four locals are? I do.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I drink about 10 or two out of work every day. If I can, if I don't, I don't seem for it. Okay, so that's a problem. I don't have the money, basically. Yeah, that's a problem. And then it's getting, you know, when you're not drinking, you're in in withdrawal and that's why you feel so crappy so of course you know no no no but i'm sorry doctor but i mean like in the way where um when i'm on it i i'm not trying to i know it's an addiction thing i'm not trying to say it's not i'm saying in the way where um
Starting point is 00:21:00 when i'm on it i feel more normal i'm not saying that's part of the alcoholism because I know what alcoholism is. I see it in my dad, but I'm saying I can talk to people normally and they don't know I'm drunk. They can smell my breath, but they don't take note of me being sloppy. It's more like, oh, he's drunk, but why is he functioning? You know what I mean? Yes, I do.
Starting point is 00:21:23 To me, that means you're dim when you're not drunk. It's not the other way around. Like, I'm a super sharp drunk. Oh, no, I'm a super dim, sober person. So there's not a chasm between them. It's because you're tolerant. The reason you are able to function normally is you are tolerant to the alcohol. So when you stop alcohol, you'll have about a week of alcohol withdrawal.
Starting point is 00:21:46 So maybe up to a week anyway. And so of course you feel better when you're on it. Of course you can function better. And you're going to have to deal with this one day. How do we deal with it? What's he drinking? Four Loko. What's Four Loko? What's in Four Loko? I thought that was like an energy
Starting point is 00:22:02 drink. Oh, is it? It's an alcohol-based energy drink. Oh, is it? It's an alcohol-based energy drink. Oh, it is? Yeah, absolutely. It has different stuff in it now than when it was popular. In its heyday, it was like drinking a giant monster and like a couple malt liquors. Yeah. It was no good.
Starting point is 00:22:19 I always think it was horrible. That stuff was bad, bad news. Unless you put in a little codeine. Yeah, make some Sizzurup, man. Double cup, some Sizzurup. Sizzurp. Sizzurp. How dare you.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Sizzurup. I really want you guys to talk more about Sizzurup. Sizzurup. Got to get some codeine and some brackets and some rose and some... Some Breezemizer. With some Sizzor up a man. Let me tell you about our friends at JustWorks. Small business leaders want an easier way to onboard and manage remote employees.

That's justworks.com slash podcast. Yeah, I was thinking about Sid and Marty Croft,
Starting point is 00:23:52 and then I was thinking about a fella, I'll just use his first name, Alan, who we were working on a show with, with Hanch over there on the lot. He wanted to introduce me to Sid or Mario Krohn. And I remember the shock and dismay on his face. I was like, those hacks? I don't want to talk to those idiots. Really?
Starting point is 00:24:13 He was excited. He was excited. Well, because they were sort of legends. Yeah, yeah. And I was sort of confused. Like, come on, they're over here, like right over here. And I was like, yeah, I know they're rich. I on they're they're over here like right over here and i was like yeah i don't i i don't i i know they're rich i know they're successful but i look at them as sort of creatively bankrupt like i why would i want to look i i could go visit uh i don't know when
Starting point is 00:24:35 edie amin was alive i could visit big daddy yeah he's got he's got two boats you know he's a rich guy like yeah yeah but i'm not a fan yeah it's because he's a rich guy. Like, yeah, yeah, but I'm not a fan. Yeah. It's because he's successful. This guy, Alan, took his own life just maybe two years after, just a couple years after that. Alan. True. Remember the beginning of the part that said, I'll just call him Alan. Oh, oh, oh, yes. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:24:59 That's right. But crazy. Super gregarious. Knowing you'd rather go out and have lunch with. Short list of guys you'd rather go out and have lunch with than this guy. Was he maybe bipolar? Sometimes they're fun and entertaining. intensely closely in a very intense environment for weeks upon weeks and never saw anything other than professional and good mood and gregarious and and like seasoned and skilled and everything else just crazy and also it just kind of shows you well, everything is on the table at all times now for everyone.
Starting point is 00:25:50 I'm now – Well, it's always been that way, mental health-wise. No, I get it. But I just didn't see the suicide and the divorce and the addiction like kicking into the 50s. And I'm not saying it didn't exist. Yeah, white males, middle age, unusual amount of suicide right now. Yeah. Think about when you were a kid.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Yeah. Now, you were only, look, you hung around a bunch of white people. Yeah. And when you were 14, everyone had a middle-aged dad, or 15 or 18, everyone had a middle-aged dad. Whose dad committed suicide? Nobody. In that group. Mm-mm.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Or even... Strangely, there were a couple of teenage suicides. Yeah, there were a couple. Then there was a little addiction. Yeah. But by the time the dads got into their mid-50s, they were kind of done with whatever that phase is where they discover Percocet
Starting point is 00:26:43 or they discover they commit suicide or they're wrestling with demons. My friend's dads were like guys in cardigans. They were all like what was the name of the silver haired guy in Mad Men? I'm the only person
Starting point is 00:27:00 on the planet that never watched Mad Men. No, the one under Cooper. Mini Cooper? Yeah. You didn never watched Mad Men. No, no, the one under Cooper. Oh, uh... Mini Cooper? Yeah. No, no. You didn't watch Mad Men? John Slatter?
Starting point is 00:27:08 Yes, that character. Drew always makes... Drew always makes reference... Not references, but he always assumes that I watch the series... You don't watch Mad Men? Never seen an episode.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Oh, my God. You would like it so much. I never watch any series. I'm telling you, it would bring something to life for you. I only watch car shows and UFC shows. It's about the 60s. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I have a very weird approach to entertainment. Roger. Roger Sterling. I really don't watch much of anything, no matter how good it is. Like when people go Game of Thrones or anything. There is a lot of enjoyable television right now. Seriously, it's worth your time. Yeah, 700 people tell me they watched A Wire 250,000 times.
Starting point is 00:27:58 I've never seen 10 seconds of A Wire. I can make a list of five shows that I think would change your life. I would love it, and I end up watching car auction shows.
