Starting point is 00:00:01 W equals H. Welcome back, friend. We have something of an unusual acquisition this evening. Two items. Entirely unrelated by all appearances. Though I've learned that when objects arrive together, it's generally worth considering why. Animals are remarkably observant creatures.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Sometimes they seem to understand us better than we understand ourselves. Although, one does occasionally wonder exactly how much they've learned. The first of our items tonight, a well-worn dog collar. Its former owner was apparently a very clever boy. This account is entitled, I don't let my dog inside anymore. Before we begin, I want to point out some of the customers whose names have been etched in brass
Starting point is 00:01:09 on this beautiful plaque I had made above the front desk. These are some of the members of the inner circle of the antiquarium. We go by the Obsidian Covenant. Recent initiates include Crow, Just J Novelty Jess Davis Antithesis
Starting point is 00:01:36 and Nikki Chan 2-3-4 We are ever appreciative of your devotion to The Order Go to The Obsidian Covenant.com to receive the sacrament
Starting point is 00:01:52 Where were we? Oh yeah. Yes, welcome to the antiquarium of sinister happenings and odd goings on. Let my dog, October 7th, 2024. 2.30 p.m. Day one. I didn't think anything of it at first. It was late afternoon.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Typically the quietest part of the day. And I was standing at the kitchen sink filling a glass of water. I had just let Winston out back, same routine, same dog. While the water ran, I glanced out the window and saw he was standing on the patio, facing the yard, perfectly still. Caught my attention was his mouth. It was open.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Not panting, just disjointed. Like he was holding a toy. Hoy I couldn't see. Or like his jaw had simply unhinged. Then he stepped forward on his hind legs. It wasn't a hop or a circus trick or that desperate balanced dog is due
Starting point is 00:04:06 when begging for food. No, he fucking walked. Slow, casual. A distribution was terrifyingly human. He didn't bob or wobble. He just strode across the concrete like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like it was easier that way.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Froze. The water overflowing my glasses and running cold over my fingers. My brain scrambled for logic. Muscle spasms, a seizure, a trick of the light, but this felt private, invasive. Like I had walked in on something I wasn't supposed to see. October 8, 2024. 8.15 p.m. day two.
Starting point is 00:05:02 nothing happened the next day. That almost made it worse. Winston acted totally normal. He ate his food and barked at the neighbors walking on the sidewalk. I was trying to watch TV when he trotted over and tried to lay his heavy head on my foot. I kicked him. It wasn't a tap either. It was just a scared reflex from adrenaline.
Starting point is 00:05:32 I caught him right in the ribs. Winston yelped and skittered across the hardwood. Brandy dropped the laundry basket in the doorway. She stared at me, eyes wide. What the hell is wrong with you? He looked at me, Brandy. He was looking at me weird. So you kick him.
Starting point is 00:05:55 She didn't speak to me for the rest of the night. If you didn't know what I saw, you'd think I was the monster. October 9th, 2024. 11.30 p.m. Day 3. I know how this sounds, but I needed to know. I went down the rabbit hole.
Starting point is 00:06:24 I started with biology. K-9 vestibulitis balance issues. Dog walking on hind legs seizure symptoms. But the videos didn't match. Those dogs looked sick. Winston. Winston looked, practiced. By 3 a.m.
Starting point is 00:06:50 The search history turned mimicry in canines folklore. Skin Walker's suburban sightings. Most of it was garbage. Creepypastas and roleplay forums. But there were patterns. Stories about animals that behave too correctly. Randy knocked on the locked bedroom door around midnight. Honey, open the door.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I'll be right there. I'm sending an email. You're talking to yourself. Open it. I could see Winston's shadow under the frame. He didn't scratch. He didn't whine. He just stood there. Listening.
Starting point is 00:07:50 October 17th, 2024. 8.15 a.m. Day 10. I installed cameras. Living room. kitchen patio, hallway. I needed to catch this little shit in the act. I needed everyone to see what I saw,
Starting point is 00:08:08 so they would stop looking at me like I was a nut job. I'm not fucking crazy. I reviewed three days of footage. Nothing. Winston's sleeping, eating, staring at walls. Then I noticed something. In the living room feed, Winston walks from the rug to his water bowl. But he takes a wide,
Starting point is 00:08:31 arc. He hugs the wall. He moves perfectly through the blind spot where the lens curves and distorts. I didn't notice it until I couldn't stop noticing it. He knows where the fucking cameras are. That bastard knows what they see. I tore them down about an hour ago. There's no point trying to trap something that understands the trap better than you do. Brandy hasn't spoken to me in four, maybe five days. I can't remember. She says I'm manic. She says she's scared. Not of the dog, but of me. I've stopped numbering these consistently. Time does not feel right anymore. November 23rd, 24, 7.30 p.m. Day 47.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I don't live there anymore. Brandy asked me to leave about two weeks ago, said I wasn't the man she married. I think she's right. I've stopped recognizing myself. I lost my job. I can't focus. Never hitting quota. calls getting nored.
Starting point is 00:09:40 I'm drinking too much, I'll admit it. Not to escape, not really, just because it's easier than feeling anything. Food doesn't matter, water doesn't matter. Everything feels like it's slipping through my fingers, and I'm too tired to grab it. I walk past stores and wonder how people can look normal, how they can go to work, make dinner, laugh. I can't. I barely remember what it felt like. I still think about Winston.
Starting point is 00:10:08 I see him sometimes out of the corner of my eyes standing, watching, mouth open, waiting. I can't tell if I miss them or if it terrifies me. No one believes what I saw. My family thinks I had a breakdown. Maybe I did. Maybe that's all it is. Depression is supposed to be ordinary, common, and overused that doesn't make it hurt any less. I don't know where I'm going.
Starting point is 00:10:36 I just can't go back, not yet. Not with him there. December 29th, 2024, 9.45 p.m. Day 82. I found a working pay phone outside a gas station. I didn't even think those existed anymore. I had enough change for one call.
Starting point is 00:11:02 I had to warn her. Brandy answered on the third ring. Huh? It was too calm. It sounded like she was reading from a cue card. I think I warned her too late. Or maybe I was never supposed to warn her. January 3rd, 2025, 10.30 a.m.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Day 88. Don't remember writing 47. Don't even remember where I am right now. Some friends couch maybe. Smells like piss. Cad food. I figured something out, I think. I don't sleep much anymore.
Starting point is 00:12:34 When I do, it's not dreams. It's like rewatching things I missed. Tiny stuff Winston used to sit by the back door at night not scratching just waiting I think I trained him to do that
Starting point is 00:12:49 without knowing like you train a person repetition Brandy won't answer my calls now I tried emailing her but I couldn't spell her name right and Gmail kept fixing it feels like the computer knows more than me
Starting point is 00:13:00 oh my God I haven't eaten in two days maybe three I traded my watch for some stuff dude said I got a good deal because I looked honest. It's funny. It makes a shaking stop.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Makes the house feel farther away. Like, it's not right behind me breathing. I forget why I even left. I just know I can't go back. Not with him there. I think Winston knows that thinking about him again. I swear I hear his nails on hardwood when I'm trying to sleep. January 6th, 2025.
Starting point is 00:13:39 11.55 p.m. Day 91. I'm so tired. Haven't eaten real food and I don't know how long. Hands won't stop even when I hold them down. I traded my jacket today. It's cold. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Cold keeps me awake. Sometimes I forget the word dog. I just think him. People look through me now. Like I'm already gone. Maybe that's good. Maybe that's how he gets in. Through empty things, Winston sleeping at the foot of the bed. Remember his weight. Remember thinking he made me feel safe. I got another good deal. Best one yet. Guy said I smiled the whole time. I don't even remember smiling.
Starting point is 00:14:32 I think I'm finally calm enough to go back. Or maybe I already did. The memories of overlapping like bad copies. February 5th, 2025, 615 p.m. Day 1221. I made it back. I spent an hour in the bathroom at a gas station first, shaving with a disposable razor, scrubbing the grime off my face until my skin turned red, chugging lots of water. I had to look like the man she married. Don't know how long I stood across the street. long enough for the lights to come on inside. Long enough to recognize the shadows through the curtains. The house looked bigger. Or maybe I'm smaller.
Starting point is 00:15:34 The porch swing is still there. I forgot about the porch swing. Randy answered when I knocked. She didn't jump. She just looked tired, disappointed. Like she was looking at a strange. stranger. She smelled clean. Soap, laundry, normal life. It hurt worse than the cold. She kept the
Starting point is 00:16:06 screen door between us, locked. You look better? I am better. I lied. I'm sorry. I think I kept losing my words. I wanted her to open the door. I wanted to believe it was all in my eyes. I wanted to believe it was all in my head. And he could I, um, she shook her head. Sad. You can't come in. You need help. To see him, she didn't turn around, down the hallway.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Through the dim, I could see the back of the house. The glass patio door glowed faint blue from the patio light. Winston was sitting outside. perfect posture. Too straight. Facing the glass. Not scratching. Not whining.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Just sitting there. Mouth slightly open. Fogging the door with each slow. I almost felt relief. Stupid warm relief. Randy put a hand on the doorframe. I noticed her fingers were curled. curled the same way his front legs used to hang.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Practiced. She told me I should go. Said she hoped I stayed clean and said she still cared. I looked at Winston again. Then at her, the timing was off. The breathing matched. And I understood, finally, finally understood why the cameras never caught anything,
Starting point is 00:18:17 why he never rushed. why he practiced patience instead of movement. Because it didn't the dog, Brandy smiled at me. With her mouth, I walked away without saying goodbye. From the sidewalk, I saw her in the living room window, just like before, watching a tall, dark figure stood beside her. Perfectly still, she never let Winston inside. I've always maintained that dogs are excellent judges of character.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Though after hearing that, perhaps the reverse deserves some consideration as well. One moment. I believe someone is trying to get my attention. Thanks for waiting. Apparently it was nothing. Or at least, nothing willing to introduce itself. No matter. We still have another acquisition to examine.
Starting point is 00:20:08 An old wooden bench. The sort of place one might sit on a warm evening and watch the sun disappear. Though I should mention, there are certain places where nightfall comes with rules. This one's called Don't Point. Don't Whistle. Not at night. My grandmother never raised her voice. That's probably why I remember the warning so clearly. She didn't shout it, didn't try to scare me into obedience. She just said it the way she said everything important, slow, like the words said wait.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Never point your finger at night and never whistle. She told me once while we sat outside her house, the sky already swallowing the last of the orange light. I was ten. Of course I laughed. What happens? She didn't answer right away. She just stared out to the darkening fields with the grass weighed like something breathing.
Starting point is 00:21:22 It attracts them. Them? I repeated, grinning. She turned to me then, not angry, not playful either, just serious. Things that don't like being seen. I rolled my eyes. Like ghosts? Worse.
Starting point is 00:21:42 She said it quietly. I laughed again, louder this time. Because that's what you do when you're tan and someone tries to scare you with vague, mysterious warnings. But then she added something that didn't make sense. If you ever feel like something's following you at night, don't run. Don't look back. Just shout names. What names?
Starting point is 00:22:09 Annie names. ones you know, ones you don't, just keep calling. That part stuck with me more than the warning itself, because it sounded ridiculous. Why would shouting random names help anything? I forgot about it for years. Or at least, I thought I did. When I turned 17, I had to stay with my grandmother again for a few weeks.
Starting point is 00:22:45 My parents were dealing with something back in the city. money, work, I didn't really care, and I got dumped into that same quiet province I barely remembered. Nothing had changed, same narrow dirt roads, same flickering streetlights, same fields stretching out like black oceans at night. In the same house, old wood, creaking floors, windows that rattled when the wind passed by. My grandmother was older now, slower, but her eyes were still sharp, too sharp. She asked me on the first night as we sat at the dinner table. You remember what I told you? About what? I said, barely paying attention.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Her gaze didn't leave me. About the night. I groaned. Grandma, seriously, I'm not ten anymore. Good, good. And you should know better. I smirked. So, no pointing, no whistling, and shout random names like an idiot if I get scared?
Starting point is 00:23:45 She didn't smile. Yes. Something about the way she answered made the joke fall flat. The first few nights were normal. Too normal. The kind of quiet that feels fake. Like the world is holding its breath. There were no cars, no distant music, no barking dogs, just silence.
Starting point is 00:24:08 And sometimes the wind. It happened on the fourth night. I couldn't sleep. It was too hot, and the ceiling fan made this annoying clicking sound. every few seconds. So I got up, grabbed my phone, went outside. The air was cooler, the sky was clear, no moon, just stars. I sat on the wooden bench near the front yard, scrolling through nothing. Nothing. When I heard it, a soft rustling from the field. I looked up, the cross was moving, but there was no wind.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Probably a cat, I muttered, or a dog or something normal. I stood and walked closer to the edge of the yard. The darkness out there felt thicker, like it wasn't merely the absence of light, something layered, something watching. I don't know why I did it. Maybe boredom, maybe curiosity, maybe the part of me that still thought my grandmother's
Starting point is 00:25:15 warnings were stupid, but I raised my hand and I pointed. Hey, who's there? Nothing happened. Of course nothing happened. I laughed under my breath. See? Nothing. And then, without thinking, I whistled. Just a short, sharp sound, the kind you used to call a dog. The rustling stopped. completely. No movement, no sound. Even the insects went silent. The quiet that followed wasn't normal. It felt wrong, heavy, like something had just noticed me. I lowered my hand slowly. Okay, that's enough. I turned to go back inside. That's when I heard it from the field. A whistle, soft, almost perfect, mimicking mine. I froze. My heart started pounding so hard it felt like it was trying to escape my chest.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Okay, that's not funny. No response, just silence again. I took a step toward the house, then another. Then the grass moved again. Closer this time, not far out in the field, right at the edge. Something was there. I couldn't see it, but I knew it was watching. My grandmother's voice echoed in my head.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Don't run. I didn't even realize I remembered that part until it was already there. Don't look back. Too late. I was already staring. Shout names. Names. What kind of stupid?
Starting point is 00:26:55 The grass bent inward, like something was stepping through it slowly, coming towards me. I panicked. Mark! My voice cracked. John, Alex, Miguel! I didn't even know why I picked those names. They just came out. The movement stopped.
Starting point is 00:27:12 For a second. Then it started again, faster, closer. David, Carlo, Ryan, Stephen! Kept shouting, louder, more frantic. The thing in the grass stopped again, this time longer. And then I heard something that made my blood run cold. A voice from the dark, soft, close, right in front of me. Mark!
Starting point is 00:27:44 I stumbled backward. No, I whispered. The voice said, sounded wrong like it was trying to be human, but failing, stretching the word. Joe! I shouted, my voice breaking. I turned and ran toward the house. I didn't care anymore.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Didn't care about the rules. I slammed the door behind me. Locked it. My hands shook so badly I could barely turn the key. I didn't sleep that night. The next morning, I told my grandmother everything, every detail, the pointing, the whistling, the voice. She didn't interrupt, didn't react. She just listened when I finished.
Starting point is 00:28:25 She sighed. You called it. What do you mean? You pointed. You whistled. You told it where you were. And the names? She looked at me.
Starting point is 00:28:39 That's the only reason you're still here. I didn't go outside at night after that. Not for a while. But things didn't stop. Because once something notices you, it doesn't forget. A week later, I started hearing it again, not outside, inside the house at night, soft footsteps in the hallway, slow, like something wasn't used to walking. And sometimes, just outside my door, a whisper.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Robert. A pause. James. A longer pause. Then. David. I never told it my name. Not once, but somehow it was learning.
Starting point is 00:29:26 One night I heard my grandmother's voice from the hallway calling me soft, gentle, the way she always did. Come here. Help. I almost opened the door. Almost. Until I remembered something. My grandmother never called me like that at night. Never. I stayed silent. The voice outside my door changed. Just slightly. Just enough. Please. Then I started whispering names again. Faster this time, dozens of them, hundreds.
Starting point is 00:30:02 Some I recognized. Most, I didn't. All of them, wrong. I covered my ears, but I could still hear it inside my head. The next morning, my grandmother was gone. No note, no sign of struggle, just gone. The front door was open, and outside in the dirt were footprints leading into the field.
Starting point is 00:30:26 I never saw her again. I left that place the same day. I didn't say goodbye, didn't look back. But sometimes at night, I hear it. Not outside, not in the distance. Close. Too close. A soft whistle right behind me.
Starting point is 00:30:45 And then a voice, a whisper that could give you chills. It says my name now perfectly. Tyler. Now, remember these words. And I want you to listen. If you ever find yourself outside at night and the world goes quiet, don't point, don't whistle, and whatever you do, if something out there calls your name, don't answer. Because it's still there. And once it knows you, it won't stop until it finds you. So never point, never whistle, not at night.
