Starting point is 00:03:42 Radio. Everybody's been here with the Almost Famous Podcast. We have one of the very successful couples from Paradise, Jess and Spencer, with us today. You just got off the Reuters. The Reuters, Union Show. We did. I was not worried about a reunion show for you, too. Were you worried about it for other people? Oh, definitely. I honestly expected a little bit more chaos than we got.
Starting point is 00:04:05 I got anxiety hives a few times, so hopefully you can't see that when they release the video footage. Yeah. I was proud of everyone for keeping it way more tame than I thought it was about to be. There were moments. There were moments. I think it could have really spiraled. Here's one of my favorite parts of the series.
Starting point is 00:04:24 and they never got talked about. And it happened with you, Spencer. And it includes drama. Oh, me and drama? Yeah, I think whatever they're calling the judges. What did they call the judges that came? The Parliament of Paradise? The Parliament of Paradise, yes.
Starting point is 00:04:40 They come out and Sean and Alicia start doing their talk. And they flash to the current contestants. And it shows Spencer kind of in the back of the TV. And you're standing there looking like you want to shrivel up into a ball and disappear because it's so awkward. I mean, as soon as we got to the point of airing out people's personal details that weren't part of the season, yeah, I was cringing from the inside out. Yeah, I was like, oh, God, this is so, like, can I just go hang out with my friends?
Starting point is 00:05:15 Because when they all showed up, I was actually so excited. Yeah, we were so excited. And then it was like, well, now we're plummeting. We're going down, no quick. Can we just exit Sage Ride and can we go hang out somewhere else? We're not going to show us anyway, so let's like go this way. The, and I do, I want to be in all sincerity. Congratulations to the two of you.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I mean, I just got off recording with Wells, and we were talking about you two as a couple. And I think one of the markers for a successful season of Paradise or Bachelor or Bachelorette should be and always has been the couples that come out of it. And I think this season, if that is our marker of success, has been one of the most successful seasons we've ever had because the two of you just seemed to work. And I will say this, Paradise tried to make it look like you two weren't going to work.
Starting point is 00:06:03 I know. They tried real hard. They tried really hard. And I think when you walked up the stairs, I think so many of us felt emotional because we could see it, that your connection was real. Yeah. There was honestly, there was no question for me on whether I was choosing love or money.
Starting point is 00:06:22 um i just like i've never felt the way that i feel about him with anyone and like i just think that that's a once-in-a-lifetime thing for most people and there's no way that i could i could choose money over what what we found it was never a question then never a question jessie and i started laughing when he offered me the money so yeah it wasn't was it a question for me the behind the scene spencer for you standing there in that moment uh i'm you know just being on the show previously, I know they're really good at makings, you get inside your own head. And I don't think it's manipulative. I think it's sometimes really fun if you look back on it. I'm assuming you're standing there waiting for her to go up the stairs for a while. I was there for a while.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I was like, have they gotten a shot they need already? Because I mean, I was so confident that she was going to be coming up those steps that if she hadn't, I had to, I had to way bigger issues than her not showing up because my judgment of everything and anything is so out of line and I need to like reassess my life as a whole. So I was beyond confident that she would show up there for a while though. Did you ever start to doubt it? No, I thought they were like trying to get another shot. Maybe they need a different angle. Maybe they need me to look down at the money like whatever. It was me redoing my makeup. I was like, I'll work with y'all. Let me know Let me know what you need.
Starting point is 00:07:51 I'm nervous here. I'm proposing soon. Oh, my goodness. I mean, that moment of a proposal, knowing the situation that was in front of you, we had seen as viewers the morning where you had mentioned, hey, today's the day. We might get engaged or we could be come engaged. And we had seen teasers that you were in your own head about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:13 And then that was solidified as you laid in bed and went, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so let me speak on that. I am the worst morning person in the entire world. I don't speak until I've been up for at least like an hour and a half. He learned that very quickly. She's nonverbal. I'm nonverbal. Honestly, we thought we started dying laughing when we saw that part of the episode because we're like, that just, that checks so much because I'm just like, I'm a different person from the hours of like 7 a.m. until around like 10 a.m. That's a 10 a.m. I'm like my normal. I'm like
Starting point is 00:08:53 11. 11. 11. And so it was honestly like obviously because we knew the conversations we had had the night before. He got to speak with both of my parents. I got to call my parents. We were in a really good place. We were confident about the decision that we were making the next day. And we
Starting point is 00:09:11 discussed the engagement at that point. So watching that clip, we were, it was so funny to us. We were like, oh my God, that's just, that's so funny that they used me half asleep, like my non-morning person's self. The show loved it. They're like, this is perfect. Use that clip.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Don't give her coffee. We have no coffee this morning. Seriously, I was the last person to walk out in the, like, main area every morning. I would be sitting there with her breakfast covered. I already got done with a five-mile run. I've show. He's lived like
Starting point is 00:09:45 three lives and I'm just like finally getting up out of bed. Yeah, you'll appreciate that in marriage one day because you get your morning time, you get your own time, you get to do what you got to do, you can go run, you can do your devotions, you can read, write, and then all of a sudden she wakes up to start half your day. And looking like this takes time, so I'm understanding, you know, I get it. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Starting point is 00:10:12 My name is Ed. Everyone say hello, Ed. I'm from a very rural background myself. my dad is a farmer and my mom is a cousin, so like, it's not like... What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke, but that really was my reality nine years ago. I just normally do straight stand-up, but this is a bit different. On stage stood a comedian with a story that no one expected to hear.
Starting point is 00:10:40 On 22nd of July 2015, a 23-year-old man had killed his family. And then he came to my house. So what do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? A new podcast called Wisecrack, where stand-up comedy and murder takes center stage. Available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. December 29th, 19th. The holiday rush, parents hauling luggage, kids gripping their new Christmas toys.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Then, at 6.33 p.m., everything changed. There's been a bombing at the TWA terminal. Apparently the explosion actually impelled metal glass. The injured were being loaded into ambulances, just a chaotic, chaotic scene. In its wake, a new kind of enemy emerged, and it was here to stay. Terrorism. Law and Order Criminal Justice System is back. In Season 2, we're turning our focus to a threat that hides in plain sight.
Starting point is 00:12:02 That's harder to predict and even harder to stop. Listen to the new season of Law and Order Criminal Justice System on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. My boyfriend's professor is way too friendly, and now I'm seriously suspicious. Oh, wait a minute, Sam. Maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit. Well, Dakota, it's back to school week on the OK Storytime podcast, so we'll find out soon. This person writes, my boyfriend has been hanging out with his young professor a lot.
Starting point is 00:12:34 He doesn't think it's a problem, but I don't trust her. Now, he's insisting we get to know each other, but I just want her gone. Now, hold up. Isn't that against school policy? That sounds totally inappropriate. Well, according to this person, this is her boyfriend's former professional. and they're the same age. And it's even more likely that they're cheating.
Starting point is 00:12:50 He insists there's nothing between them. I mean, do you believe him? Well, he's certainly trying to get this person to believe him because he now wants them both to meet. So, do we find out if this person's boyfriend really cheated with his professor or not? To hear the explosive finale, listen to the OK Storytime podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. A foot washed up a shoe with some bones in it.
Starting point is 00:13:11 They had no idea who it was. Most everything was burned up pretty good from the fire. that not a whole lot was salvageable. These are the coldest of cold cases, but everything is about to change. Every case that is a cold case that has DNA. Right now in a backlog will be identified in our lifetime. A small lab in Texas is cracking the code on DNA.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Using new scientific tools, they're finding clues in evidence so tiny you might just miss it. He never thought he was going to get caught. And I just looked at my computer screen. And I was just like, ah, gotcha. On America's Crime Lab, we'll learn about victims and survivors. And you'll meet the team behind the scenes at Othrum, the Houston Lab that takes on the most hopeless cases to finally solve the unsolvable.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Listen to America's Crime Lab on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I'm Jenna Lopez. And in the new season of the Overcover podcast, I'm taking you on an exciting journey of self-reflecting. Am I ready to enter this new part of my life? Like, am I ready to be in a relationship? Am I ready to have kids and to really just devote myself and my time? I wanted to be successful on my own, not just because of who my mom is. Like, I felt like I needed to be better or work twice as hard as she did.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Join me for conversations about healing and growth. Life is freaking hard. And growth doesn't happen in comfort. It happens in motion, even when you're hurting. All from one of my favorite spaces. the kitchen. Honestly, these are going to come out so freaking amazing. Be a part of my new chapter and listen to the new season of the Overcomber podcast as part of the My Cultura podcast network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. All these love
Starting point is 00:15:05 triangles getting you twisted? Us too. But it's because we have wettles, pretzels on deck serving up soft, salty, and totally irresistible snacks. From original butter to sinful cinnamon, we've got your cravings covered, fresh baked, hand-rolled, and always hot. Go online to find your nearest Wetzel's Pretzels, or, to order ahead, your Wetzels Paradise awaits at Wetzels.com. It's interesting too to me How different people's experiences on Paradise are For the two of you And correct me if I'm wrong here
Starting point is 00:15:50 I'm just a viewer and a fan You walk through Paradise fairly unscathed You had a really beautiful love story It was always kind of adding in depth You were great in competitions You stayed out of the drama You watched from the sidelines you just had this like wonderful vacation and others went like and had a really rough experience
Starting point is 00:16:14 right alongside of you same house same bar same pool same beach really rough experience for somebody like the two of you who come out of this engaged in love and can look back with a smile in your face what is it like also sitting alongside of people today going you're we lived in the same house and you're it was not the same for us yeah honestly I I have to say, I'm just so thinking, he's such a good human in general. I just didn't have to worry about his intentions on anything. So I'm very thankful. And I mean, I could have had a, I very well could have had one of the experience that some of the other people had.
Starting point is 00:16:52 But I had this guy. And he's just the best. And also, I will say, I think that this go-round, I really wanted people to see the real me. I didn't want to get involved in all the other stuff, but I will say it was surprising to see all the conversations that are going on while we're just focused on each other. We just literally kept our focus on building our relationship,
Starting point is 00:17:16 and that's at the end of the day why we didn't face those hurdles as much. Yeah, and I think at the end of the day, we both had a mutual understanding that whatever we were deciding to do was for what we were, we viewed as the betterment of us as a couple. And there's never been anything Jess has been upset about that I've been sitting there wondering, hey, this is so outlying. Like, where did that
Starting point is 00:17:43 come from? She's a very rational, reasonable person. And of course, you know, emotions can grab a hold sometimes. But at the end of the day, everything that she does, I can, while I might not agree with everything, step back and be like, look at it and say, I understand where that's coming from. And when you come from that place, I think you can work on it together to get to a place of mutual understanding. And I think that different relationships move at different paces. And you, you run into obstacles at different times within the relationship. And that's so unique to the people that are in the relationship. And Paradise was, honestly, the reason I was fighting so hard to be able to stay. And the reason that when Sean said her name, I was like, oh, dude, do you
Starting point is 00:18:33 done. Like I don't care how strong your relationship is. I don't care about anything because every single day we had in paradise. It was like a week. It was like a week in the real like like legitimately of when else are we going to have this time with no phones, no jobs, no like no work calling us, no family burden, no anything. Like our whole job was to get to know each other. And I was fighting tooth and nail for every single day that I could be there with her to, grow our relationship at this expedited rate and just get to know more about her in this awesome unique scenario that we found ourselves in. Yeah, I think Wells described you as like a golden retriever. Yeah. People have said that. Yeah. Like a very like, oh,
Starting point is 00:19:21 gold retriever meets Clark Kent. Yeah, that's a good. That's a good. I also saw, I have Wells royalties for that. Yeah. I also saw, I'm just thinking about this now. I think during the the season, I got a clip sent to me of maybe is it your mom that also is like, I can't believe this is my son. And it's, she's so proud of you, which is an amazing thing. I have the best mom on the face of the planet. Yeah, she's really proud of you right now. So how did, I mean, your families, you haven't met her family yet, right? So I have talked to both of her parents, facetimed. She's met some of my family. Yeah. Because I have some family in California. So he's met my aunt, who I'm super close with and my two cousins that are like my little brothers and my Gigi. But
Starting point is 00:20:02 My parents, he has only met on FaceTime. Haven't met Mamma or mom and dad in person. That's what we're literally leaving here to go do. So you're getting ready to fly out from here to go meet Mamma and your mom and dad. But you have met his family. Yeah, I've met all of his. He has three brothers. And I met all of them.
Starting point is 00:20:28 I've met his mom and dad. I've met his grandparents. I've met his best friends. And, yeah, they're amazing. What's that been like for you and what's the feedback that you've gotten on Jess? So one thing about me and my brothers and my friends, we're all kind of weird. Yeah. And weird, but I love it.
Starting point is 00:20:48 I love it. So when I was going into paradise, I was like, man, the reason I went into it thinking that, you know, an engagement probably won't come of this is there's qualities that I'm looking for. in my future wife. And then when you pile on top of that, you have to be able to tolerate a little bit of the weird and give a little bit of it back. And our first conversation, she told me about the biscuit making competition.
Starting point is 00:21:16 She won in fifth grade. And when she started diving, that's where I was like, oh, she's perfect. Oh, she's so weird. This is awesome. That is insane. That's crazy. That's a beautiful, beautiful story.
Starting point is 00:21:30 She's a winner. Yeah. My name is Ed. Everyone say, hello Ed. From a very rural background myself. My dad is a farmer and my mom is a cousin. So, like, it's not like... What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?

Starting point is 00:24:32 What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose between a maximum security prison or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth? Unfortunately for Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced. He said, you are a number,
Starting point is 00:24:48 a New York state number, and we own you. Shock incarceration, also known as boot camps, are short-term, highly regimented correctional programs that mimic military basic training. These programs aim to provide a shock of prison life, emphasizing strict discipline, physical training, hard labor, and rehabilitation programs.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Mark had one chance to complete this program and had no idea of the hell awaiting him the next six months. The first night was so overwhelming, and you don't know who's next to you. And we didn't know what to expect in the morning. Nobody tells you anything. Starting point is 00:26:26 With Pinkberry, it is love at first swirl. Big thanks to Pinkberry, who has been serving up some delicious frozen yogurt treats today, where every flavor, whether it's original tart, pomegranate, or their new white mocha, is truly a front runner. And the only drama is choosing between your favorite premium topic. Whether you're here for love or, let's be real, just the froyo. Pinkberry's got your happily ever after. Find a location near you or order online at pinkberry.com. I mean, I think you said during the reunion that your family has fully like adopted her in and that's such a great thing. People, you had mentioned it that obviously Paradise was fast. and it is expedited and a day there does feel like a week. And it is.
Starting point is 00:27:31 But the cool part is I do believe you can find love there because I think if you would ask me a weekend to meet my wife, would you marry her? I'd say, yeah, tomorrow. Like, you just know. Yeah. It's weird. People always say that, but yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:43 When you know, you know, you know. And do you feel today more confident than ever that you know? Absolutely. 100%. It's like you said, it's that when you know, you know feeling. And I don't know if it's love it first. side. I know so much goes into love. So it might not be that, but from our first conversation,
Starting point is 00:28:03 she just felt like a home. And she was like so welcoming. And it's like this familiar familiarity with a person that like I don't know where it came from. I don't know why I feel like I know you. I don't, but I do know that you're the only person I want to talk to. And I want to sit here for hours just to know everything about you, unprompted. We were talking about all of our trauma and stuff that happened in our life that's like made us the people that we are today. And that was like five hours into a conversation where we're just sitting there talking. And I don't know, she just makes me so comfortable. And I love being around her.
Starting point is 00:28:44 She's my absolute best friend. I don't care if we're sitting in bed rotting watching vampire diaries or if we're going to the nicest dinner. if we're in Costa Rica on the beach like I don't care what it is but I want her there with me and it's like yeah when you know you know and yeah yeah it's a really incredible thing and for anybody out there any listeners any fans that say can the bachelor really work can bachelor in paradise really work I think you two again are an incredible example of that now I do want to as we close up here bring up something that was not discussed really on the show but was written into us actually um there's a rumor out there maybe it was discussed in the show and i just
Starting point is 00:29:29 missed it but there's a rumor out there that uh you slid into his dms before this show started is that true i did um i think the first message that i sent him was about his dog i was like hey i was like oh she's such a pretty girl will you give her a boop for me like a boop on the nose a cute boop yeah cute boop and um he's like oh yeah i'll do that for her right now and i go Oh, and tell her that she's beautiful. And I think he said something like, oh, she'll love that coming from you. And I was like, oh, what does that mean?
Starting point is 00:29:59 And that was like, that was literally it. I think like maybe he, I remember I made muffins one time and he slid up and was like, those look delicious. Just stupid stuff like that. Banana bread. Wait, you remember that's so funny. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Well, and it's, I know for me, so I had only met two people from two women. from the Bachelor universe in person and that was at our tell-all and so of course you like follow people you'll DM with people like react to a story whatever we all have this weird mutual shared
Starting point is 00:30:33 experience but I wanted to make sure that I went into paradise without too many preconceived notions about anyone I know thank God I know that in my edit or how I was portrayed on the show I look super boring and I'm like
Starting point is 00:30:49 I know for a fact like I was the loud person there I was yapping all the time like everything and you know I had talked to people that work at abys who are close friends now and they're like you honestly just have to go there give everyone a fair go at it so I was just living my life in Dallas and as soon as anything the prospect of being able to go to paradise came up I was like okay we'll just like go in blank slate yeah it's funny to see the comments though like I've seen a few of people being like oh they definitely talked before they definitely knew each other They didn't have each other's numbers.
Starting point is 00:31:23 I had to get her number after. We were in the hotel room after. I'm like, so I kind of need your numbers. Such a weird thing to do. We do know you knew him in her name, which is a big deal. Sometimes that's even a mystery. He knew the government name. I mean, I think that's just a good tidbit, but you didn't know.
Starting point is 00:31:42 Like when she walked in then and you saw her there, were you like, okay, I kept my mind open for five minutes and now I see her. So it was like her energy and what she was. she brought walking into a room, only so much can be conveyed over social media and stories and photos or whatever. It was the, she was like a magnet for me. She walked it. I was like, I need to go talk to her. See, I already wanted to talk to him because I thought he was cute. Yeah. I think he's cute. And I mean, she's, she's beautiful. And obviously that's a, like you need that sort of attraction in a relationship but for me it's so much beyond that um yeah
Starting point is 00:32:25 and it was just me or a person i was like man i wish i would have known you were this cool we could just like we could not go on yeah but you got some more money out of it right it got a little bit money a little chunk of change not complaining over here uh final question for you uh you know there were conversations that were happening about you two moving in together uh who would be moving where and when and how and also kind of family if you're going to be starting a family i think spencer was very excited about starting a family i have a seven-month-old daughter i will tell you it is amazing uh i would recommend it to anybody uh you're probably low on sleep right now doing great it is it is nothing but a blessing so catch us up now uh shows done airing we know
Starting point is 00:33:10 you're engaged what's next um so we went back and forth the entire time since filming wrapped, and we talked about San Diego, we talked about Dallas, we talked about maybe a new city, and I think for our future right now, Dallas just makes the most sense. I'm really excited, you know, I haven't been able to do much there because we have to stay inside, but I'm really excited to see the city more, and it's a lot cheaper than California. So we did decide on Dallas, and I'm going to be moving to Dallas at the first of the year. when his lease is up yeah and then with everything else we're taking a step but we haven't been on date yet like let's let's go on a date um let's be able to move in together get our our footing and then
Starting point is 00:33:58 kind of take things from that is that your honest opinion spencer are you still kind of like hey let's get this thing i mean i would love to be able to i think that the thing i will excel most at in life is being a father and i can't wait for that but i also know that i want her to be that person and i want her to be comfortable and be on board. So just like with the move as well, I was like, hey, let's like, let's weigh all of our options. Yeah, he's been so patient with just like, because I think everyone saw me doubting quite a bit, you know, that was kind of like the devil on my shoulder like, hey girl, you did this
Starting point is 00:34:32 once before, it didn't work out, see where that got you. But just like trusting my gut and knowing that I have such an amazing partner and like this is exciting and this is a good thing and just let it be what it is and stop worrying about. about your past failures or past things that have happened. And yeah, so with all that being said, we are excited for the future. We don't want to put timelines on anything. I think that we both get really excited, though,
Starting point is 00:35:00 and you can see that with him. He's very vocal about it. And I am as well, too. I don't want anyone out there to think, like, I'm like, whoa, buddy, calm down. Because I get really excited, too. It's just realistically. Well, it's also like, she's 26.
Starting point is 00:35:16 I was saying kids in the next two years, which would make her 28, and she said she wanted kids before 30, so the Delta there, it's not insane. It's not crazy. You're on the same timeline. Yeah, it's the same. Like, I can give her take a couple of years, honey. Exactly. I'm not one to give unsolicited advice, but here's my advice. Let it be good. It is good. It seems good. Just let it be good. And if it wasn't good, somebody would tell you. And they haven't yet. And I won't tell you today.
