Listen to therapy for black girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.

Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack, where a comedian finds himself at the center of a chilling true crime story. Does anyone know what show they've come to see? It's a story. Your beloved brother goes missing without a trace. You discover the depths of your mother's illness. I'm Danny Shapiro. Starting point is 00:02:28 Listen to Family Secrets Season 12 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is the Almost Famous Podcasts with IHartRadio. Hi. Well, hello, Trista Sutter, nay, Wren. How are you? I am awesome.
Starting point is 00:02:46 How are you today on this beautiful Wednesday, almost Father's Day? I am doing great, thank you. I'm having a little bit of an emergency on my hands. I was trying. to do something good and my wife's phone someone dumped water on it you know we put it in rice for a couple days nothing happens so i decided it was a good time to switch phone service too yeah so i went and got us new phones and i switched everything over and for some reason her
Starting point is 00:03:14 photos and videos haven't fully restored yet and it's been 24 hours and we're like what and And with the new phone deal and everything, you now trade in your old phone. So they wipe your old phone and you trade it in. And I'm just like, oh my gosh. Did she have it backed up anywhere? Yeah, we backed it up. We have it backed up on the cloud, but it's not showing up in the cloud. We backed it up twice, too.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Oh, my gosh. We have done this two times, like five years ago, ten years ago. I lost. I'm going to assume it was probably around 25,000 pictures. from from my phone kind of the same same sort of thing it is it is so scary how we are so reliant on our technology and honestly for me pictures are my memory like if I don't have a picture I don't remember something I really think that I have a memory disorder or whatever you want to call it I think I always have I don't think it's just mommy brain
Starting point is 00:04:22 even though that is always my excuse. We always say that too. We're always like, oh, mommy brain. There you go. Yeah, but I've always had a bad memory and it's genetic too. So pictures are like my thing that you have to have to remember your life. And I'm so sorry. That is so frustrating.
Starting point is 00:04:41 She has, you know, she had a couple of videos on there from, you know, our son Blake just learning to walk. And then she apparently made me some very, very nice video for Father's Day. that she made and say you know it's not showing up so I haven't seen that one obviously but it's just it's a real it's a real bummer yeah yeah it's a downer well you know what this podcast today our chat on AFOG is going to pick you up because we've got some really fun guys who I know you love just as much as I do yes um Andrew Firestone and Jason Mesnick will be joining us today It's kind of a Father's Day celebration, if you will, on the AISOC podcast. A theme, as it were.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Yeah, because we wanted to talk to some fathers in Bachelor Nation. And Jason Mesnick, I believe, was the first lead to have a kid already. Yeah, he was. Right? He was. Not even the girl. I don't think the girls either. I think that he was the first one to have a child as the lead of Bachelor or Bachelorette.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Yeah. I think, and he did a great job, too. Yeah. Yeah. They just did a thing for Bachelor Nation reached out to me and did this interview, which I thought was really cool. Right. I did it for Mother's Day.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Did you? Yeah. It was so nice. It was so nice. It was sweet. It actually made me like just really kind of nostalgic, you know, thinking about, you know, oh my gosh, now I am a dad. Like, I was thinking about it from the standpoint of like my dad, you know.
Starting point is 00:06:12 So when they were asking these questions, I was like, well, you know, this is what I think of that and this way I think of this. And then all of a sudden, I'm like, wait a minute, I'm the dad now. Like, I've got to be on point for these things and, you know, responsible and be there for my kids. And it's kind of a nice, it's a sobering moment when you're sitting there. I will tell you that my favorite, my favorite answer or my favorite question and answer experience on that. And maybe you can remember yours from Mother's Day, but it was, you know, do you have any advice for new dads? And I said, actually, I don't have any advice for the new dads.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I do have advice for people who don't yet have kids, though. And my advice was, don't be so quick to judge, you know, like when you're at a restaurant and you see, you know, the family over there and the kid's on his phone or his iPad, don't be so quick to be like, no, because I think I told you this before, but I've been like, no, that'll never be me. And then all of a sudden when your dad, it's like that iPad is your best friend in the world at the restaurant, you know what I mean? It's the best thing you can possibly do. So. Yeah. No, I completely agree. I think that it's really hard. For people who don't, I mean, it's like anything else in life, right?
Starting point is 00:07:18 You can't understand what people are going through unless you've been in their shoes. And it's the same thing with just parenthood in general. Like you really, and even individual parents, like you can't judge other parents for what they're going to do. You have to respect everybody for the way that they're going to do it. I remember I did, we did the cry it out method for helping our kids sleep. So we didn't want our kids sleeping in our bed because we just felt like that's our bed. We want our time with. you know, our private time in our bedroom.
Starting point is 00:07:48 And we chose to do cry it out, actually, after the advice of Brad Paisley, which was funny. But best piece of advice we ever got because our kids sleep really well. And I remember people just being like, oh, how can you do that? That's cruel to have them cry it out. And I'm like, you know what? Whatever floats your boat as a parent, obviously within limits or, you know, with regard to their safety. and happiness and all of that. And we kept them safe.
Starting point is 00:08:18 But it is, it is really challenging. It is. To not look at someone else's situation and be judgmental. Well, we have, so my son comes in twice a night on the average. Like we'll put him, go to sleep around, you know, 7.38 o'clock. About midnight, he comes in, daddy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Not Blake. No, no, no, Grace. Blake is in the crib. Yeah. So I'll pick Grayson up. I'll take him back to his bed. I'll lay down with him for a little bit. He'll fall asleep.
Starting point is 00:08:41 I come back to my bed. Next thing, you know, daddy. And so we're like, how are we going to break him of this, you know? Yeah, that's hard. We have some people we know that were like, we just locked the door from the outside. I'm like, I can't do that.
Starting point is 00:08:56 I'm like, I'm like, I have no problem with a cry-it-out method in the crib and everything. I'm like, but man, I go, my son, like he can talk and walk. And I don't want to hear him just pounding on the door like, Daddy, why am I locked in here? You know, I can't do it. No, I wouldn't be able to do that either. Yeah. But hey, whatever floats your boat, whoever gave you that person,
Starting point is 00:09:14 piece of advice, if that worked for them? Yeah, it worked for them. They said it, you know, did a little damage the first couple nights, first 48 hours. But after that, they were, you know, he was sleeping through the night and everything was good. I'm like, well, I'm getting to the point where maybe that's something I might have to consider. I don't know. Yeah, right? I also, my piece of advice on that article, I actually just looked it up.
Starting point is 00:09:37 And my other, my advice to fellow parents was don't ever be too proud to ask for help. There you go. Yeah, I like that. I just feel like everyone needs help sometimes. And I have a great group of moms in my valley, in the Vale Valley, who, you know, whether we grew up raising our kids together or we're kind of finding ourselves in similar situations in life. Like, you just rely on each other. I feel like everyone needs help, so don't be afraid to ask for help. If you've got a newborn at home or a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old or whatever, don't be afraid to ask for help. You got a 30-year-old living in your basement?
Starting point is 00:10:16 Ask for help. Trust me. Can you please provide me a meal train? Trust us. You want to get that kid out of your basement. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. In today's day and age.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Now my kids are like four and five years away from leaving, and I've been having more and more conversations about that happening and what I'm going to do. And I am just like, I am going to lose it. I'm going to lose it when my kids leave. I will not be able to handle it. So you're not looking forward to being an empty nester, huh? You're not looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to the kids being gone because I do, like my life revolves around
Starting point is 00:10:56 them and their schedule. I am looking forward to, you know, time with Ryan, but I, I'm sure he's the same. Like, it's just going to be, it's going to be a huge adjustment. Yeah. And one that I'm just going to be, it makes me want to call my mom like right now and my dad. and say, I'm really sorry. I don't call you every day. Oh, my God. So I'm going to look like a father of the year here or son of the year. Do you know I talk to my mom every single day?
Starting point is 00:11:25 That's every day. Every morning. So it's gotten to the point where, you know, especially since my dad passed away, I feel like she's really hanging her hat on my calls. Yeah. And maybe I'm putting too much. I might be, you know, putting too much out my phone. You are not. You are not because that is what I think. Like, I don't know how I'm not going to have contact with my kids. Yeah. I don't know how I'm going to do it. And so I'm sure your mom is so appreciative. I need to do that. Oh yeah. She literally says every day she's like, thank you for calling. You know, yesterday, like it would be like a Sunday and I forget to call or something. Yesterday when you didn't call, I thought, well, Bobby should be calling any minute now. And I'm like, oh my God. It worries her.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Yeah. So now I can't miss it. I'm like, you know, mom, my phone rings. My phone rings in as well. So if you ever want to call, you know, if you're that worried. Totally. Kind of got a lot going on over here. Yeah. That's what I always tell. So my dad is remarried. It has been for, I mean, over 30 years, I think. And my stepmom always says, we just don't know when to call. Like, what is a good time? I'm like, really never, but all, you know, just try me. And then I'll call you back. Never and always. That's what I say. When I lived on the West Coast and my mom was in Michigan, she'd be like, well, honey, but the time changed, I never know when to call. What's a good time? Like, never and always. I'm like, it's never going to be a great time. But I'm always going to answer if I'm. I can. So. Agreed. Yeah, so try. I'd like to know, you know. All right. Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead. No, I was going to say that Andrew is in the waiting room, but do you have another story before we bring him in?
Starting point is 00:12:55 No, I don't. I'm so excited to talk to him. Let's grab them. Imagine that you're on an airplane and all of a sudden you hear this. Attention passengers. The pilot is having an emergency and we need. someone, anyone to land this plane. Think you could do it? It turns out that nearly 50% of men think that they could land the plane with the help of air traffic control.
Starting point is 00:13:24 And they're saying like, okay, pull this, do this, pull that, turn this. It's just... I can do it my eyes close. I'm Mani. I'm Noah. This is Devin. And on our new show, no such thing. We get to the bottom of questions like these. Join us as we talk to the leading expert on overconfidence.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Those who lack expertise lack the expertise they need to recognize that they lack expertise. And then as we try the whole thing out for real. Wait, what? Oh, that's the run right. I'm looking at this thing. Listen to no such thing on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Starting point is 00:17:07 There he is. That tan! Look at the tan. Where are you right now? Are you in Santa Barbara? Yes, home. It's home. Home.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Very nice. What's up, buddy? What's going on, Mr. Bob? I was just saying that you are my favorite bachelor of all time. That's weird because I'm on the call? No, no, it's just the truth. Whenever anyone asks, I'm like, you know, they always go, you know, who, you've watched all the season.
Starting point is 00:17:32 I'm like, well, I've missed the last, you know, 16. But I would say of the shows I did watch, Andrew was always my favorite bachelor, because there's a reason for it. Andrew, I loved how, like, I don't know if you remember. So I told this story to Trista a few weeks ago, how you and I were together in New York when my show premiered. And we had the best time. We're in this cool bar. We're watching it.
Starting point is 00:17:56 And, you know, you go out in Times Square and all this kind of great stuff. And all I could think of was there was this line where I'm pouring like blue nun for somebody. And I'm like, this is from the Ginnysstone vineyards. And Andrew looks at me. He goes, really, bro? Really? I know. I've got like my last 30 seconds of fame and you're already stepping on me. So I'm like, come on, let me enjoy it for like a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:18:17 And truth of the matter was, I was like, man, I just really would love to have my name on a bottle of wine. You know, that would be pretty awesome. But I think you can now. You can probably pay Andrew to do that for you. I bet. I bet. I bet you could. Or ask really nicely. Yes. And then a few years ago, I mean, this is probably like probably seven or eight years ago now. was in California doing like a wine tasting tour with some friends and ended up at Andrew's place. And I loved it. We came in. I didn't expect to see him. He's there. We're hanging out. It was awesome. I loved it. So continued success there too, buddy. Thank you. Yeah. Totally. It's a beautiful
Starting point is 00:18:56 winery. Yes. Same. Okay. So we, Andrew, we kind of wanted to have a couple cool dads on here. Meznik is coming on later. But we wanted to have some cool OG dads. And so kicking off with the kind of Father's Day dialogue, I wanted to tell a funny story that I'm pretty sure Ivana has told you or that this is the plan. Okay. Is she in the room? She's over there. So she's been setting up my station here. I'm actually about at the office.
Starting point is 00:19:27 I'm at home. So I'm using all her equipment here. She's drinking coffee just judging me right now. She's like marking it on a chalkboard every time I stutter and say something stupid. Uh-huh, right? Yep. Hi, Ivana. Hi, Vana. Thanks for being his assistant. Oh, she's the best. Hi, Ivana. We love you. Oh, my, Mom. We love you.
Starting point is 00:19:48 So, okay, so our kids were born, Brooks, which made me think of this. So when you pop up on the Zoom call, it says Brooks Firestone. So I don't know if you're using Brooks's computer or Ivana has Brooks listed. Twice as my son's computer. His technology is way nicer than mine. Yeah, totally, right? Uh-huh. So when he was born, Blakesley, my daughter, and Brooks were born right around the same time. I think Brooks was born a couple weeks before Blakesley. And so when he was born and I was about to have Blakesley, I think I reached out to Ivana and I was like, okay, I've got dibs. We're going to have a planned wedding. Brooks and Blakesley.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I didn't know if I was allowed to blow this up or not, but the term is sliding into the DMs of Blakesley. Oh, no, and vice versa. She, okay, so listen. So I have to tell you, she's always like, hey, mom, we write Ivana and tell her that Brooks left me on red, and so he needs to respond. That's funny. I don't know what that means, but it doesn't sound good. You know what? It basically means that they read, they read the DM and that they didn't respond to the DM.
Starting point is 00:21:03 They just read it. So she's like, he left me on red. what does that mean? I'm like, Blake's, you're 13 years old. I think we've got some time. Maybe you'll meet him one day. I mean, but she just, he's, he's so handsome. He is. He's a gorgeous kid and great at soccer and you're all family, buddy. I'd like to your late in life step into modeling. I've been really enjoying this. And I mean, it's been fun to watch because, I mean, we always knew Ivana. And then, of course, with all the kids. And then all the kids. And then all a sudden, here comes Andrew. I'm like, hey. I think what, so like a lot of times, like when you, like when you go out to like a bar, you always want to bring like a shorter friend. So you like, you feel like, so Ivana brings me around and the kids bring me around to make everybody else look better. Oh my gosh. Stop it. You can see me, Grace the page, page 37 and 38 of the spring catalog of Coles.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Yes. Oh, yeah. I think I'm wearing a turquoise, you know, high-cut shorts and wrap-around glasses. So, yeah, I like it. Yeah, see, your 15 minutes of fame didn't end back then. And the turquoise don't have your eyes pop. They make your eyes pop. My modeling career is just really starting to pick off.
Starting point is 00:22:24 I'm up for a men's diaper campaign. Oh my gosh. Stop. I'm pretty proud of it. I'm pretty proud of that work I've done there. Yeah. Well, that's a tough one. That's a tough one to model because it's more active and less passive as I, as I remember. But one of the most nerve-wracking things, so my daughter, my 11-year-old, Anya, so she does a lot of this stuff. And so she's working for Abercrombie right now. And Juana, who is, you know, a seasoned model is doing it her whole life. I mean, she's just like Johnny on the spot knows what's going on. I get there. And I know, Trista, you've been on the sideline. for you know for hockey games or lacrosse games or whatever else yeah i am all of those moms put together that like so anxious and like there's usually like you know they have kid rangers to help
Starting point is 00:23:09 with a kid they have like they have a dad wrangler just for me to like sir you need to start oh my god sat way over here and he's like dad leave me alone you're like a stage dad a couple of times been allowed to be on the set but i'm going up with her in two weeks uh to san francisco for old Navy campaign and she's already giving me like the layout. Like, okay, listen, dad, I'll be okay. Like, you just sit over and read your iPad and leave me alone. So my model career is really on thin. Your modeling career is all about them, which isn't life. That's pretty much life as a father, as a mother. It's all about them. Okay, so big question is three is done for you guys, right? Are you done? I would say that modern medicine.
Starting point is 00:23:58 I agree with that. Okay, yeah. Then, yeah. Maybe a little snip, snip action. I see that. There'll be a long conversation. If Ivana becomes pregnant, we're going to have some words. Canyon just made my appointment for that consultation.
Starting point is 00:24:13 She did. Yes, and all I know is I'm stocking up on frozen peas, as I've been told to do. Yes. Yeah, I know. We have three, you know, Brooks is 13 now. Any is 11. Shane is eight. We've got three chickens and a French bulldog.
Starting point is 00:24:26 So my life is full of children and animals and life. And so I'm very happy. And yeah, we've done ahead and set the boundaries for what we have right now in terms of bedrooms and people living in the room. Yeah, right. Nice. Yeah, we don't want to have to build a wing, a new wing. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Not exactly. So when you guys got together was three the magic number from the start? Or did both of you want to have kids? Like, what was that conversation? Yeah, I mean, I think that we both wanted a. you know, a big family and we wanted three kids, you know, and we had, we had our, Brooks was right away. We had, you know, Brooks was born like nine months in a day after our weddings. I'd say that for my mother's sake, because she's been counting the weeks, making sure that it was, in
Starting point is 00:25:14 fact, all legitimately was. Right. So we had, we had Brooks first and then, you know, Anya came along 25 months later. And then we had a three-year gap until, until Shane came along. And, you know, it was, you know, each one of them, you know, as every parent says, and they add so much to, you know, individually to me, but to the family dynamic, they all had something a little bit different. And all three of them are so different. You know, my son, my eldest son is very into sports. My daughter is very into anything on the stage or music. My youngest son is, you know, it's got Legos where he can take it apart or piss me off. He loves that. But they're all so different and special, and that's, you know, it just, it, it, it, I couldn't imagine our family any different, which is weird thing they say. So when Abana and I got together, you know, 17 years ago, I couldn't, everything that I thought was going to be is that and so much more. And so just feeling very blessed. And I'm getting all, I'm getting all choked up talking about it. I love it. I'm usually, it's usually me that's doing the water work, so I appreciate
Starting point is 00:26:24 you coming on it. I'm usually every time we talk about, you know, being a dad, I'm like, a bad, like I've been breaking down. I decided to wait until I was 47 to have my first kid, because I really felt like everyone else had kind of done it already, you know, and I wanted to just really put my own stamp on that. And it was going to be, you really matured at about 46 and a half. So let's not kid ourselves. Exactly. You hit the nail right on the head, buddy. You can already see you guys fighting over toys and fighting over, you know, I want the red legos. Yeah. Now it's, now it's going to be. great because, you know, I'll be the dad, you know, at the T-ball games, and they're going to be like,
Starting point is 00:26:57 your grandpa's awesome. He's at every game. Why does his Walker look so? Well, you know, he's a, yeah, that's going to be made. So, oh, no. So what do you, what are you doing for Father's Day? Do you have any plans? So, I mean, imagine, you know, it's going to be ACDC opening up for the Rolling Stones, blue angels, you know, just pampered all day. Sounds about right. It's a little bit of a surprise. So it's either a surprise or nothing's planned. But either way, her poker face is really, really good right now. So I'm looking forward to it.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Usually, you know, I have a stack of cards that I've kept over the years of the kids. Handwriting has gotten a little bit better over the years. Just a bit. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah. But it'll be for here. How are you doing on Avana scoreboard right now as far as, you know, any bad marks yet? Are you doing okay?
Starting point is 00:27:48 I mean, she's looking pretty judgy at me right now. Yeah, yeah. I hope that I've been complimentary enough to her and not too foolish of myself. Yeah, there you go. I think you're doing a great job, buddy. You guys to come out to Santa Barbara. I keep threatening, but go out to visit and go wine tasting, ride motorcycles at the ranch or whatever. That's an open invitation.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Oh, yeah. Oh, my gosh. Get the kids together. I know. Okay, so Blake'sley seriously has been like, Mom, we need to go on a trip. we need to go on a trip and I have a friend who plays polo. She has a ranch out in Santa Barbara and she has zebras out there too. And I've always been like, we need to go see the zebras.
Starting point is 00:28:30 And we could always make a trip and go see Brooks, aka Andrew and Ivana. That's what we got to do. We've got to get. That's our next IHeart radio trip right there. Yes. Yeah. And I'm opening up a new hotel in Santa Barbara in October. Oh, awesome.
Starting point is 00:28:45 Awesome. So, yeah, we have two other ones here down by the beach. So, I mean, literally, whenever you guys want to come out, and visit, we'd love to have you and host to you guys. Oh, we'd love that. Up on the roof deck, we could do a, I don't know, IHeart Radio, something or other. That'd be amazing. Oh, my gosh, yes.
Starting point is 00:29:01 Gosh, man. You've always been, I mean, I've said it before. I think we did our superlatives a few weeks ago. And I thought, what did I say that Andrew was, Trista? What did I say? I think we both said that we thought he was one of the, like, the best sense of humor. Right? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Yes. I mean, because I've always loved your sense of humor. Well, Andrew's a little, what I love about Andrew's sense of humor, we play off each other very well, frankly. But what I've always loved on Andrew's sense of humor is he's okay being the guy who's like, just sits back, observes, and then makes very funny, witty banter. And I love that. I'm usually waiting to see if it's going to be funny or mean out of your mouth.
Starting point is 00:29:39 So I'm just, I'm just going to giggle or like literally like, you know, do one of those things and write down and be like, I'm going to get him later. He's on my kill list. I doubt that I'm going to ever get the most humorous bachelor next to you, Bob. But even if I'm somewhere in that atmosphere, I'll take that. I got to be honest, buddy. You get my vote. I think I'm a clown.
Starting point is 00:30:01 You're actually someone I enjoy listening and having funny Whitty-Bander conversation. He's a comedian. You're the clown. Yeah, exactly. He's funny, really. But now, always graceful and always gracious and always glad to have you on, buddy. Well, you guys come out to Santa Barbara. I'm standing invitation to see you guys.
Starting point is 00:30:18 out here soon. We love it. Give Ivana a hug and those two kids. Ivana, you've been using parting words. How did I do? You did a good job. I did a great.
Starting point is 00:30:27 I think she said great job. She said good job. I think so great job. Two thumbs up over here, Ivana. Woo-hoo. Thank you, buddy. Happy Father's Day. See you, me.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Happy Father's Day. See the best. That guy, I'm telling you. I know. That's the bar very high. Every time. Yeah, I agree. I agree. I've always loved him. He's been my, you and him are my, well, I can't say this now that Jason's coming in, but
Starting point is 00:30:56 you're like, can he hear me already? Sorry. But yeah, I mean, I feel like we just connected because we were really early on the three of us, like whether we were doing photo shoots, like he and I and Jen and Ryan did a photo shoot. I think it was in Aspen, somewhere in Colorado, but we connected there and And then we had the photo shoot with Miu and Allie and Emily. Yep. Yep. And Andrew. So, like, you know, I think because we just connected over a bunch of different opportunities. Yeah. That was it, right?
Starting point is 00:31:34 We were all the same era. So it's kind of like you feel comfortable knowing who you know. And the fact that we've all remained friends for so many years is so nice because, you know, it doesn't have to work out that way. You hope that it does. And it's such a blessing, I think, for all of us that we have each other to kind of go through this stuff with because it is kind of weird sometimes. And it's nice to be able to call each other and go, is this, are you experiencing this? Because I'm kind of going through this, you know, or whatever it might be. Nice to have someone to bounce it off of and who's been there, done that.
Starting point is 00:32:05 And, you know, it's probably going through it with you. So I agree. 100%. Yeah, agreed. Hi, my name is Enya Yumanzo. And I'm Drew Phillips. And we run a podcast called Emergency Intercom. If you're a crime junkie and you love crimes, we're not the podcast for you.

You feel like you get a little whitewash because you have to do the code switching? I won't say whitewash because at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:35:07 you know what I'm me? Yeah. But the whole pretending and code, you know, It takes a toll on. Listen to the new season of Grasasas Come Again as part of My Culture Podcast Network on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. A foot washed up a shoe with some bones in it. They had no idea who it was.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Most everything was burned up pretty good from the fire that not a whole lot was salvageable. These are the coldest of cold cases, but everything is about to change. Every case that is a cold case that has DNA right now in a back wall. will be identified in our lifetime. A small lab in Texas is cracking the code on DNA. Using new scientific tools, they're finding clues in evidence
Starting point is 00:35:51 so tiny you might just miss it. He never thought he was going to get caught, and I just looked at my computer screen, I was just like, ah, gotcha. On America's Crime Lab, we'll learn about victims and survivors, and you'll meet the team behind the scenes at Othrum,

Starting point is 00:36:30 are boy Jason Mesnick, everybody. Jason Mesnick. Welcome. OG. Do you guys know this is like, like you guys are just a couple days more OG than me that like when I hang out with the uh this is probably going back to like 2010 or 11 the guys back then would call me the godfather no yeah nice yeah I understand that dude I'm still only like 33 but like okay right how old were you when you were the bachelor
Starting point is 00:37:03 what's that how old were you when you were the bachelor 31 31 okay yeah And then, Trissa, you're the godmother. I get the godfather sometimes, too. Actually, now I get the grandfather. So I guess. Well, okay, so one of our bachelorette's, I will leave her name out of it. She, um, in an interview, she, I think was going to call me, they usually call me the fairy godmother. And she was like, our fairy grandmother.
Starting point is 00:37:29 And I was like, wait a second. Like, that is not cool. I'm sorry. But grandfather and godmother, just two way different things. Yeah. So, um. I mean, I do, like, you can't see it, but there's a lot of gray here. Oh, I just got mine colored.
Starting point is 00:37:44 Oh, come on. You guys look great. Come on. You guys are kids. I'm 51. I really am a guy. I'm the great great-grandfather, I guess. No, no, but I'm right on your tail. I'm 50 this year in October. Oh, this is the year. Happy birthday. This is a big year. I love turning 50. I almost loved it as much as 40. Not quite as much, though. But, yeah. You know what? I'm not really looking forward to.
Starting point is 00:38:10 it um just age wise but you know celebration i'm it's always good to have some kind of celebration people on the show now or what like they're still in the early 20s 20 something yeah 22ish yeah yeah yeah i i i literally could be their parents yeah you know we could have if we had really if we had babies really early in our life well i just had an intern start at work for me and she's 21 and i'm like okay like i was way out of college when you were born yeah That's crazy. Way out of college. Jason, how old are you?
Starting point is 00:38:46 I'll be 46 in a couple weeks. Okay, so yeah, I knew we were close in age, but yeah, so we're five years apart. So, yeah, I mean, I think about that all the time whenever I've done something and run to someone who's from one of the newer shows and I'll find out how old they are in Canyon. My wife will always go, could be your son. Could be your daughter. Yeah, I'm like, thanks, babe. Thanks for my mind. The one thing I remember about even the show was we were the last season that was not a.
Starting point is 00:39:10 So, you know, like, if they show your, like, kind of old footage, like, they got the bars on each side. Yeah, the greeny, you know, like, almost black and white. Yeah. Like, you were the last season, and I'm like, man, thank God. Yeah. Right. Seriously. Little blessings.
Starting point is 00:39:27 Little blessings of being the O.Gs. Yeah, I'll tell you. It's a forgiving, it's a forgiving lens. The old lenses were forgiving for me. I used to always say that they would, like, you know, they would say the camera added 10 pounds. And I'd be like, so what do you guys? me with like 20 cameras this is bullshit i'm feeling a little puffy today what's going on yeah um so we wanted to bring you on kind of as a little father's day uh podcast or hour whatever you want to
Starting point is 00:39:55 call it and you were the first lead to come into the lead position as a father so i'd love for you to talk a little bit about that and being on jillian's season were you one of the first to come come on as a cast member, if you will, a bachelor on a bachelorette with a child? Yeah. I think so. I mean, and honestly, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason I got cast. Oh.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Like, I remember, like, I remember, like, I had some local dudes shoot my casting video, and the whole video was Ty and I wearing, like, matching Michael Jordan jerseys, dunking on each other. Oh, that's awesome. I mean, that's awesome. So cute.
Starting point is 00:40:41 That is super cute. Yeah. I love it. Yeah. And now he got my ass all day. Right. Dude, he's so tall. I mean,
Starting point is 00:40:50 it's crazy. He's six tall. I know. He is so tall. Where did he get that height from? His mom. I mean, his mom and her family are,
Starting point is 00:40:59 like straight from Norway, giant Vikings. Got it. Yeah, I mean, he really is a tall, he's a tall, lean kid, really good-looking kid.
Starting point is 00:41:08 I mean, it's like, I mean, Is he pretty active in sports right now and stuff? Is he just loving? You know, it's funny. So he'll be a senior next year in high school. And I was sitting next to his, like,
Starting point is 00:41:19 he does his off-season basketball stuff. And his coach's wife was like, I never told you this, but my husband and I are big Bachelor fans. And I was like, oh, crap, did you watch it back when we were on? They're like, hell yeah. And Ty was three, right? So when he first saw Ty, this is going on the Bachelorette. I was still in diapers.
Starting point is 00:41:41 And I remember there was footage of him in diapers that his mom, Ty's mom didn't like that I was like, like so that's still his coach's first view of Ty. Oh, my God. I'm a six-four kid and diapers. That's so funny. That's cute. I mean, it's so long ago.
Starting point is 00:41:56 You know, isn't that kind of cool though? This, I mean, this and, you know, obviously now social media, which wasn't around. Jason, you might have been one of the first seasons that started with some social media stuff too, right? I remember like when the season, I mean, obviously, the season ended so weird, but, like, it was such a big deal on Twitter. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:14 And I remember somebody saying, like, it was a big deal on Twitter, and I had 5,000 followers. Yeah. I mean, it was a huge deal. Right. And to have that many followers, even 5,000 was a lot. Isn't that something? Wow, that's crazy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:28 That is crazy. Hey, so going back to, like, you being the first one, how did that feel like were you, were you on edge more than maybe? Like, I feel like I was on edge just thinking about how my grandma was watching and my parents were watching. But you had your son, you know, to show that you're this awesome role model on television. So how did that feel coming in, not having anyone to look to from previous shows? What were your feelings going in? How did you feel? I mean, that was, I mean, honestly, that was the only reason not to do it.
Starting point is 00:43:07 And I think part of it was I had a big response. Like I was always co-parenting with with his mom. But at that time, he was with me quite a bit more. And so I think it was much more of like, hey, how do I figure out like filming the, if I go back to The Bachelorette where you have a little bit less control and less of a voice. You know, he would stay with like my brother for a while and then let him fly out to see me. But on The Bachelor, they gave me a lot more power. meaning like I would say hey like he's got to be out here all the time and so I would go I mean most of the time you know at the house I was staying at I would go on dates and then he would just be sitting in my bed waiting for me when I got home oh that's awesome like most like when I think about him all my memories of I mean of course there's some of the show stuff is like okay what's Ty doing can I get back and see him and see him in time you know that type of stuff and they would they were very good about Well, most of the time they were very good about him being great and making sure that he's not too cranky and that type of thing.
Starting point is 00:44:14 But I remember the very first concept they had was, what if we have all the girls babysit tie when he was three? And I was like, not going to happen. Yeah, no way. Like, how about we just get the Los Angeles Lakers come and just hang out with me? Right. Totally. Yeah, they're like, well, that's not going to happen. I'm like, see what I mean?
Starting point is 00:44:34 Exactly. Yeah. If that doesn't happen, this doesn't happen. Like, so they had some wonky ideas because I think they thought it would be cute for TV. Yeah. But majority of time, I think there were a couple things that we did. But the majority of time, it was just, like, if you saw him,
Starting point is 00:44:50 it was with me in the hotel room or the house or something like that. Yeah. Does he remember any of it? No, he has no, like, he actually, like, you know, all the seasons are now on Netflix or a lot of them are on Netflix. So when ours was on Netflix, I think it was right when COVID first hit, he asked me if he could watch it. And it became like, so he was seven, so he was 15 at the time. And it was a big deal because I had to go talk to his mom about it.
Starting point is 00:45:18 And she's like, okay, like, I knew this was going to happen someday. Yeah. As long as you explained to him why you did the things you did and what stuff was TV versus real. Yeah. But he watched the first couple of episodes and he was like, I was kind of interesting. after, like, episode three or four, he's like, it's so boring. I'm going to watch. I'm going to go watch the Seahawks or whatever.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I don't know if this is a reflection. Did he watch the final rose? Oh, yeah. Like, with you and, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't think he really cared. Like, he knew, like, he knew all about it by that point. He had never seen it. And, like, if I fast forward to now, like, Riley,
Starting point is 00:45:55 the only thing Riley's ever watched is the wedding stuff. Uh-huh. Yeah, right. We haven't lit her watching anything else yet. No, she's not. I don't feel like she's old enough. I do have to tell a funny story. So we went to Disneyland with Jason and Molly, our family and their family. Oh, how fun.
Starting point is 00:46:12 It was the best time. We had such a great time. But I will never forget. It kind of like scarred me for life. We were walking around and Ty was kind of in the back of the pack with me and someone else, maybe me and Blake's Lee or me and Max or something. And all of a sudden he was gone. And I was like, you guys, where's the same?
Starting point is 00:46:33 Where is Ty? Where is Ty? Thank the Lord. He had the wherewithal to ask for someone with a Disney tag. Tell him that he was lost. And I think we went back to the place that we had seen him. Do you remember this, Jason? We were just, Molly and I were just talking about this two days ago. Oh my gosh. Was this in California or Florida? It scared me so bad. California. Okay. But he asked, I was like, oh my God, I lost Ty. Oh my God. And everyone's like it is not your fault he's my kid or whatever so don't it like but i'm like he was back here with me and then he was gone i don't know where he is oh it was so stressful luckily remember we have one of those guided tours and because of that you know everybody's got their
Starting point is 00:47:17 mics on so like it goes from one guy to one guide to the next molly's leaving um she's gone she's going to look at houses um she she went from uh they goes to all the different guides And luckily, you were our guide, and we were able to find him real quick. But, like, yeah, to lose your kid at Disneyland, talking about bad, dad. Man. Talk about bad, bad, bad, bad. That was the scariest. I mean, like, I know people go through terrible things with health and whatnot for their kids.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Yeah. Like, luckily, the worst thing. I mean, that was the worst feeling. Like, I've been at, like, the playground where you're like, you can't see him for a second and then, like, pop off the slide or something. But, like, Disneyland. land? I know. That's why I was freaking out.
Starting point is 00:48:02 I was like, this cannot happen. And all of us were kind of in our own little tiny bubbles. We were walking all as a pack, but obviously there's crowds of people. And, oh, gosh, it was so scary. Thank God. I was California, not Florida, too.
Starting point is 00:48:16 I mean, California is, you know, huge, but considerably smaller than Florida. Yeah. Oh, my God. The Florida one scares me. You know, it's like, you know, did he grab a park hopper? And is he an upcott? I don't even know, you know.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Right. Bob, have you guys done Disney yet? So we did, we did this year, we went, we went to Disney with Grayson at three and a half in California. And it was just a burn burner of a day, super hot. Yeah. And, but he won, all he cared about was seeing Lightning McQueen and Mater. Yes. You know, so, you know, we thought he'd be into the other stuff, too.
Starting point is 00:48:52 He really just, you know, wasn't super caring about it. So we walk into like the cars exhibit that they have. And, man, it was just. like we were walking into the cutest little town in Carbator County, because he just went crazy. He was just having the best time. And that was awesome. That was like the most excited that I've seen him. And, you know, it was awesome. We get back in the car to come home. And I turn around and go, you know, how was it, buddy? And I turn around and he's passed out. You know, just totally out. Oh, done. Of course. You know, whenever we did Disney and we did it a lot, I think we did it like five years
Starting point is 00:49:21 in a row, we always said rules out the window, you can have as much sugar as you want because we're just going to keep you going, going, and then at the end of the day, the goal is to get you to pass out. And so you hit the goal. Sugar crash. Oh, yeah, I gave him the big lemonade. He's, like, sucking it down cany. I was like, what's he drinking? I'm like, ah, you know, it's in a sippy cup. It's probably just water with a lot of sugar and a little bit of lemon. Right. Imagine that you're on an airplane and all of a sudden you hear this.
Starting point is 00:49:53 Attention passengers. The pilot. is having an emergency, and we need someone, anyone, to land this plane. Think you could do it? This is the hard part when you pay down those credit cards. If you haven't gotten to the bottom of why you were racking up credit or turning to credit cards, you may just recreate the same problem a year from now. When you do feel like you are bleeding from these high interest rates, I would start shopping for a debt consolidation loan, starting with your local credit union. shopping around online, looking for some online lenders because they tend to have fewer fees and

Starting point is 00:53:30 If you get lost, look for the person with the Disney tag or whatever. Yeah, no good advice. Like, you know, the old phone cord where you can connect your kid. Oh, I got the leashes? The kid leash. Do you know it's really funny? So we were at some part, we were just talking before we had you on, Jason, we were talking about that Baxter Nation thing that they did where they asked some dads, you know, some questions
Starting point is 00:53:49 about Father's Day and stuff. And this year they talked to me. And so I was asking these, answer these questions. And one of my big things was, you know, as someone who's not a parent yet, just know, because I was that guy for 47 years, don't try not to judge parents, you know, because you don't know what they're going through. So an iPad, a kid leash, all things I've said no to. Right. Now the iPad now is my best friend. Oh, for sure. And the kid leash, I will not lie to you. could find one, he'd be wearing it. Because I can't keep up. The kid is like, it's so fast.
Starting point is 00:54:20 And so I'm like trucking down the street. Damn it, I need one of those leashes. You know, I just, I have to get a one. Trista, did you ever use one? No, no, I never did. I was constantly just holding their hand. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, but no, I didn't do the leash.
Starting point is 00:54:36 I kind of felt that same way, like, really? I know. To reach their own. To reach their own. I think I would do it. I would probably do it if I knew. I feel like if you had a really. active kid you know like that's what as long as what as long as it comes with a muzzle that's awesome
Starting point is 00:54:53 yeah oh that's more of a pacifier but whatever yeah yeah same same yeah i hear you so how is riley doing how's your donuts with daddy days love good Riley just had her big um uh annual gymnastics performance last night. Yes, I saw that. Yep, she was very, very nervous, but did great. Awesome. No, she's good. Like, you know, school gets out this week. So it's always a big panic of like, you know, especially for Molly, like what's you going to do all summer? So I think she's got like half the weeks in summer camp. And then the other half of weeks is iPad week. Like the iPad's a like, Bob, like you're saying, it's, it's like as a parent, you're like, I'm terrible, but you're like, but it's peaceful.
Starting point is 00:55:42 Yeah. And sometimes that peace allows you to be a better parent, you know? Give me a half an hour here, you know. We were freaking out, you know. We just thought any screen time was too much screen time, but now we've figured. You know what? Okay, so I'm going to bring it back all the way back to when we were little, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:58 My television was on all day long. Yeah. In the summer, especially, all day, every day, right? And I don't think it's any different than you're watching a show. on the iPad, whether it's a Netflix app or a Hulu app or whatever app, the Disney app. I feel like people are so judgmental about it, but we did it when we were kids. It's kind of like we didn't have seatbelts. Everyone smoked. You know, like, and we processed food. My mom put Diet Pepsi in my bottle when I was like, two. I'm sure of it. I mean, I'm sure of it.
Starting point is 00:56:37 There's no question. I know that she did. It's hysterical. I mean, you just do what you've got to do. And I think that there are a lot of, like, educational apps for when they're little. So I feel like going that route is great. But honestly, I feel like we did it. So who are we to say, you know, oh, you can't have a screen? Even though there are more screens now, I was in front of a screen all the time.
Starting point is 00:56:58 Or a video game. Like, even now, as Ty, you know, Ty gets older in high school, he'll wake up and I'll take a shower and he'll come down and eat breakfast. He won't break eyes from his phone because he's just watching videos. Yeah, right. Social media or whatever it is. He won't even like, hey, buddy, how you doing? Hmm.
Starting point is 00:57:17 Oh, my God. Thank you for saying that because Max is right now the one word, like the grunts. Oh, totally. Uh-huh. Oh, my God. I'm like, please have a conversation with me. Like, do you pin them down and get something out of them?
Starting point is 00:57:31 Or just let me. I try, but on it. But, okay, so perfect example is, Last night, I asked him a question about, so he literally just got Snapchat, just got Snapchat. And I have been opposed to it. I did not want him to have Snapchat, but it's the way that, like, kids are texting these days, essentially. They don't go into their messages app. They go into Snapchat.
Starting point is 00:57:55 And that's how they're, like, talking about where they're going to meet or what they're going to do for the day or blah, blah, blah. And so he just got Snapchat. We have it, like, on an approval for, like, the parents' approval. and Ryan approved it, and we didn't talk about it. And so I'm like, damn it. Like, I didn't want to give him the Snapchat app until a little bit longer. And so I asked him who he was talking to on Snapchat.
Starting point is 00:58:21 And Ryan's like, dude, like, I didn't have told my parents who I was talking to if it was a girl or whatever. Like, back in the day, I wouldn't tell him who I was talking to on the phone. You can't ask him that. He's not going to say anything. So I know that I have to kind of word my questions in different ways in order to have conversations with him. But it is, and I know that I did the same thing. I did the one word answers.
Starting point is 00:58:47 I did the yeah, no, whatever. I don't want to talk to you right now. Like, all I want to do is chill. So I get it. But it is frustrating. I just want to like, I know. I just want to talk to him. What, how old was he when you gave him his first phone?
Starting point is 00:59:01 I think they were 10 or 11. Yeah, that's what we did for time. Same for you, Jason. So that's a good, I'm actually sitting here, I was exactly what I was just thinking, Jason, was I was like, man, I've got a three and a half year old. He's going to be four. I don't want him to have a phone until he's in junior high.
Starting point is 00:59:20 And even in junior high, I kind of wish it was high school. You know what I mean? Right. Well, I mean, the reasoning, like, whether it was good reasoning or bad reasoning, but the reasoning we gave was because when he's out and he's got like sports and whatever he'll be able to call us when practice was over some kind of like that was the reasoning like i don't think it was but riley who doesn't have her own phone who has molly's old one of our old phones to like you know she's got an ipad but she'll also use that to look
Starting point is 00:59:49 cute and cool but she will still do the same like she brings her phones places even though it doesn't work yeah right just to have it that's interesting like one of her friends little sisters has this gymnastics performance tonight like this little four-year-old and she's going to bring it to take pictures yeah that's a perfect way to do it i feel like giving them the option to take pictures and i know there are options bob out there where you don't have app access like i think you can just like it's kind of like a camera with a phone option but we did the same thing jason we did because you know our kids ski and and they were to the point where they were going on their own um you know with well, maybe with other families at that point, but now they're like full on skiing on
Starting point is 01:00:36 Vail Mountain, which is a huge mountain with lots of terrain on their own. So I feel like for safety purposes, that's kind of why we did it as well. I can't remember what it's called. Oh, Gizma. The watches. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I just saw that today. Yeah. Riley has one of those. She's had one for like a year. And she's lost it and whatever. But like for me, like if I was going to be really honest, that's good enough. Right. Right. That's good. But she, but she, like today, she's walking home from school and she'll bring that with her. But she'll also have her phone. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:07 So Gizmo does what for people who don't know what it is? Oh, it's just, it's like a dumb down, sorry, I'm looking at my Apple Watch. It's a dumb down Apple Watch, but you can only call people that you program into the phone. That's what I love. Yeah. That's the thing, right? That is awesome. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:24 Throw grandma and grandpa in there, throw a couple aunts and uncles in there and call out a day. And it's way, like for people who, like, if you're out of people who, like, if you're actually like I have like like I'm not on commission for this thing but I think like you buy the thing for like 50 bucks and it may cost 10 bucks a month yeah right right I love that by the way I hate that we have to go ahead go ahead I was going to say by the way I hate that we have to say that this is not an ad you know well like I'm not the modern day it's I'm not a social media guy at all and when I watch everybody else make a million bucks a year off social media and I'm like oh my god I've got to post it dude I'm so bad
Starting point is 01:02:00 bad at it. I'm so bad. Do you know, I don't, a little secret. I don't even know. So I got asked to do this thing for, I'll just say it was a Cheerios campaign, you know, and they're like, well, you know, we love this and you're a little older and all the stuff. And so I just made up my own thing. I'm like, I'm going to do exercising with my son and I'm like using them as the weights and stuff. And we had to ask our babysitter to help me shoot it because I couldn't figure out how to shoot the way they wanted it shot. And then I'm like, okay, now what do I do? And she's like, they want They want overlays where you say some things. I'm like, how do I do that?
Starting point is 01:02:33 She's like, just give me your phone. I mean, literally, she was magic. But if it weren't for her, I would have never done anything with it. If you were in that world, so going back, if you're 20 years younger or even 15 years younger, and I was with the group of The Bachelor people doing something. And they, she pulled out, she pulled out her phone. And she had a list of 20 different people that were going to pay her a lot of money for one post. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:02:57 And it was just like a rotation of people that. we're going to come in and pair, God knows how much, but just, I mean, boy, it was out. We missed out big time. Yeah, I mean, but I will say the stress of social media, I feel like we did not miss out on it. Oh, no. That would have been crazy. Yeah. I know.
Starting point is 01:03:16 I don't think I would have been able to handle it. Like, I'm sure you get this question too, Jason. Although I know that you and Molly kind of wanted to stay away from question and answers for a while. But I've gotten this question a lot is. would you have done the show if social media had been around back then? And I don't know. It's really hard to think about because people can be so cruel. I remember so many people saying that they got death threats
Starting point is 01:03:43 and the cyberbullying is just out of control. So would you, would you do it now? Retrospectively, just even knowing like how mine ended, and I think somebody would have probably tried to kill me. Oh, my goodness. Just thinking about that. Oh, gosh, right with your situation and after the final rose, people were mad. Right, my house burned down again.
Starting point is 01:04:09 Yeah, that was crazy. I remember, you know, it's so funny because, I mean, we had chat rooms back in the day when we did it. Oh, totally. Message boards, yeah. That message boards, and that was bad enough. So I can't even imagine what it would have been like with, you know, social, with Instagram and Facebook. And I would have been, dude, I would have never. I probably.
Starting point is 01:04:26 You wouldn't have been on it, Jason. You would have just turned it off for a month or two months or something. I remember, like not when I was on The Bachelor. I didn't look at this stuff, but I was on The Bachelorette. Me and some of the guys when it was airing, we would go on those chat boards. And, I mean, luckily, when I was on The Bachelorette was always really favorable. Yeah. Like, I remember some of that stuff.
Starting point is 01:04:45 I'm like, oh, God, that would hurt. Dude, I remember it too. Oh, same with me. I mean, I remember everyone was, it was really nice. And so I was always like, oh, yay. They think I'm funny and cute and they like me. But, man, after you're The Bachelor, it's like, and they want to kill me.
Starting point is 01:05:00 Especially. Because it's the way I talk. Yeah. I mean, they hate my voice and I laugh like a hyena, which I do. Oh, wait, you know what? I just realized I wrote that about myself. Yeah. I'm sure it would be hard, but like it is like, Molly and I talk about this all the time.
Starting point is 01:05:19 Like the people who make their living off social media now, they have to live it. Like, it is a whole thing. And like for me to post one thing. is so stressful, let alone. Yeah, so stressful. And honestly, we do it and with kids. Like I, you know, we're talking about not being judgmental towards parents, but I don't know.
Starting point is 01:05:40 I feel like when you are in that role, like having your kids be part of it all the time. We just had Desiree Hartsock on our Sigreid. And she took her kids. So she doesn't put her kids in any posts anymore and she removed every single photo that she had on her Instagram account or on her social media accounts of her kids. She removed everything.
Starting point is 01:06:04 Like, if I did that, I don't think I'd have any content. I wouldn't have anything on there. Yeah. I post about my kids and my family, that's all I post about. But, yeah. Is she an OG?
Starting point is 01:06:16 Is she considered it? She's an OG. Oh, yeah. She's considered an OG. Okay. I didn't know. She might be, I think she's the, probably that finish line would be the OG, right?
Starting point is 01:06:26 When was she? I mean, I. have you ever gotten um i can't remember what number uh nine it's the first guy Alex Michelle yeah no we got we think he's on the witness protection program okay hey yeah right when Molly moved to town and I'm gonna say this is blunt as as I can do it you know well he we were out at we're out for happy hour and this is Molly and I weren't married we snuck like early in the afternoon and he walks by.
Starting point is 01:06:59 He didn't live in Seattle at all. But like, and like I didn't really know why at first. I'm like, Molly, why is that guy look so familiar here? She's like, dude,
Starting point is 01:07:07 that was the first bachelor. And I was like, he looks way too heavy to be the first bachelor. Oh, really? He put on some weight? Well, I mean,
Starting point is 01:07:14 it was just like all of us now. Like, you know, I get older and he's, you know, he wasn't 25 anymore. Right. But I went up to him.
Starting point is 01:07:20 I'm like, are you? And he's like, yeah, I recognize you too. And he's like, I had to unplug from everything. Although he was going through, if I remember correctly, he was going to get married soon.
Starting point is 01:07:31 And I think he wanted to get his face out there for that. And I don't know if it ever happened or anything. I don't think it did. I don't think it did because we've literally, we've talked about this a lot. We haven't heard from him in years. I had a similar kind of running with him, Jason. I was on a plane to Cabo and he was on the plane. Or was it the plane on the way back.
Starting point is 01:07:50 I can't remember which one it was. But I was going from New York to Cabo. And he came up. He's like, hey, what's up, man? A couple batchers was on the plane. And I was like, oh, and it was kind of embarrassing, you know, because I was like, oh, dude, I don't really want to, you know. You're like, what's the, yeah, can we not, you know. Low profile.
Starting point is 01:08:06 He was nice enough. He was nice enough, you know, and everything. But it's funny because I, I remember landing and I don't, I never saw him again. It was one and ten, you know, never saw him. Like my only, the only thing I knew about, again, it's 10 years ago. I think he was with a company that got acquired by Microsoft because Microsoft is like in the Seattle area. Yeah. And he was here for just some conference.
Starting point is 01:08:26 and then he was gone. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, he's been gone from Bachelor Nation since I said goodbye to him. No, I think after.
Starting point is 01:08:36 The kiss of death. Yeah. Just like, didn't he do like kind of like some soft porn? What? Did you guys hear about this? No, I'm going to Google it now.
Starting point is 01:08:46 Me too. I miss everything. It's because you're not to see that. That's right. That's because you're not on social media. No, but I don't think he's on social media. social media but I do feel like he did some kind of movie that maybe he even directed on his own um wow anyway well we'll google it after this and see if i'm right on here oh jake the snake
Starting point is 01:09:10 yeah he he would probably still would he be at the uh og I don't know what year was he do we know what year was he had no idea well he was on alley season yeah yeah so he would be after so the season Allie, I guess, right? It's just a G. He's a G. Yeah. He's just a G. I actually told Trista one time, we talked about him on the show, and I was like, you know, I met him.
Starting point is 01:09:38 I did a thing with him for us weekly with Andrew Firestone and I, and I'm like, he was great that day, you know? But man, when you watch that, watch that back of, I mean, you talk about the kind of after the final roses that had bigger impacts. Like yours obviously was huge in a way, but you were still a gentleman and kind of, you were still a gentleman and kind and, you know, it was because of love. And, you know, there's, there's so many millions of different ways you can look at that. But when Jake and, uh, Vienna did that one, oh my God, I remember thinking to myself, literally I would want to crawl under a rock and
Starting point is 01:10:11 never come out if I were these guys, either one of them, you know, but especially Jay. That's what they did, right? They're pretty, they're gone, right? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, who knows? I don't know. I mean, Jake, I feel like he's probably still a pilot. I've seen. Vienna pop up in my like suggested or whatever on social media before or something like that. I want to say she's a mom now. But yeah, I don't know if they fall into the OG category, but I like the G category. Yeah. So he was 2010. So he was 2010. So yeah. And Jason, you were what, 2006 or seven? No, I was 2009. Oh nine. Okay. Right before him. Yeah, he was right after me then. Okay. All right. Was Desiree before you? I think she was, right? No, no, no. She was
Starting point is 01:10:57 after you. Yeah, yeah. That's what I was asking. Because her, you know, her and Chris lived in Seattle for a while. Yeah. Yeah. So we used to get together all the, you know, then they moved to Portland, but we used to see them all the time. I know you guys were always together. I was always feeling so left out. Oh. You know, Chris and I used to like, we had this creative idea of like, let's market real estate mortgage guy together. Yes. Oh my gosh, you should have. I mean, I love what you and Molly are doing. I've tried to get Molly. I mean, obviously Molly and I, you know, Jason, Molly and I have been, she's one of the closest people in Bachelor Nation to me. And I've constantly been trying to get her to do something with her, whether it was a podcast or a business or whatever. But I love that you guys are doing real estate. I think it's a perfect fit. She's just so over talking about The Bachelor. Like, she totally get that. Totally get it. I know. People always ask me, like, it's probably, I remember when Jason and I did a show not too long ago with Ben Higgins, and we were talking about, you know, getting recognized and all that kind of stuff. And one of the things that we talked about was, you know, like, I mean, I have people say to me all the time, they're like, are you so sick of talking about? And I'm like, what are you supposed to say? You know, so I'm always like, no, it's fine. Thanks. You know, but there is a point where you're like, I don't remember what you're talking about, but I'm glad it made an impact on you. I'm like, they'll be like, do you remember when you did this one thing on the horse and I'm like, what? No, I don't recall that.
Starting point is 01:12:21 No, I don't. A long time ago. Yeah, it was. Okay, Jason, well, thank you so much for coming and joining us today. I know you guys are busy, but it means a lot to us to get to chat. Happy Father's Day, Ryan and Bob and everybody out there. Yeah, thank you. Happy Father's Day to you too, buddy. Have a great one and give Molly and the kids our love. You got it. Good seeing you guys. Take care of Jason. Bye, guys.
Starting point is 01:12:46 Jason Mesnick everybody Such a great guy man I love this episode I know we went long This is a long episode But so good I just love both of them And it's so funny to me
Starting point is 01:12:58 I feel like Mesnick is Way more OG than I guess he is Being from 2009 But I guess to me He's just one of the Maybe it's because he was one of the most successful Or like at least after the After the final rose
Starting point is 01:13:11 He has always been one of the people That comes up in conversations as having a lasting relationship after the show. Well, such a memorable, I mean, such a memorable season, too, with the way that it ended. And, you know, I mean, that's something that had to be tough for both of them to weather. So, I mean, good for them. And I get it. I do get it.
Starting point is 01:13:29 I mean, you know, I love talking about this stuff because for me now, it's like, well, it was 20 years ago. Why not? You know, but for, you know, Canyon was in, you know, junior high. Just kidding. I think she was in high school. But, you know, it's like she doesn't, she does know, you know, she didn't watch it. So, you know, I love talking about it with her and telling her all the fun stories. But more so, I mean, for me, it's all about the friendships, right?
Starting point is 01:13:50 The friendships that all of us have made from that show, that is, especially for someone who did not marry their person on the show, like you and Jason did, I think for me, that's the best takeaway is that, thankfully I'm still friendly with Stella and she just got engaged, which is awesome. And Kelly Joe's happily married already been a guest on our show. So, like, my final two, you know, it's nice to have that kind of connection still. and, you know, and then all the friendships that we made from other seasons. But, yeah, I've always thought that Jason is a serious OG too. But, man, he's actually, he's a little later than us. But I think of Sean Lowe is an OG too, though. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:25 I feel like the OG is, like, not just based on year, you know, it's not just based on season. Like Jason was like, wait, is he an OG? I feel like whoever kind of brings us back to that time of more innocence in the show, you know, gives us that feeling is an OG. So I consider them. I consider Jason and Desiree and... Me too. Deanna, Jillian, like all of those OJs. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:14:51 And then, of course, the fairy godmother, Trista, Sutter. Thank you. Thank you for not calling me the grandmother. And the grandfather, Bob Gini here. Signing off from yet another week of our almost famous OG fun. I love it. Thank you for another great show, Trista. I love you.
Starting point is 01:15:10 I hope you have a great week and give Brian a big hug for me. Such a great dad. I will. Happy early Father's Day. Thank you very much. Yay for all the fathers in Bachelor Nation and beyond. We love you. And beyond.
Starting point is 01:15:22 We love you guys. Being a dad isn't easy, but it sure is a lot of fun. That's right. All right. We'll see you all next week. Bye. Why are TSA rules so confusing? You got a hood of you. I'm take it off.
