this is the almost famous podcast with iHeart radio hey everybody and welcome back it's trista
and this is part two of my little chat all about one of my favorite days ever my wedding day uh ryan
my amazing husband is going to be joining me today as well as a very special guest so i hope you
tune in okay so my next guest i don't think needs any introduction but i will introduce him
nonetheless he was the one who was there with me through it all from the engagement well actually
even before the engagement to the engagement to the planning to the wedding to the honeymoon to
the last 20 years, he is my best friend, my soulmate, and my husband for 20 years almost.
Crazy.
Anyway, let's bring in Ryan.
Welcome to the show again.
Thanks for coming on and talking about the wedding.
I mean, I was just talking to Sarah.
And she asked if we ever watch the, if we watch it back on our anniversary, because I think they watch their.
video every year and I was like no don't think it's really Ryan's cup of tea to watch that back
although maybe maybe we should now that we have it yeah now that we have a link to it would you
watch it again with me sometime sometime yeah I would I would definitely watch the wedding again
sure yeah I mean it was such a fun weekend I loved
watching it back, just remembering all the little things that I've kind of forgotten since then.
What is one of the favorite memories for you?
I don't know. I was trying to think that, too, as you've been sort of reviewing it.
And I honestly don't remember very much about it. And I know I kind of remember the lead up to it and
the debate as to whether or not we were going to do it on television and sort of those
conversations and then I remember the overall impression afterwards when everybody was
kind of leaving and how fun it turned out I think the obvious things that stick out for me
or you know trying to make the Brad Paisley thing work out and in the midst of you know you
were changing dresses and there were the photography was going on and then Brad had an actual
concert he had to get to so he had a time frame and so trying to
to hurry that process along without giving it away, I remember.
Obviously, you know, just how well done it was aesthetically with all of the flowers
and stuff, you know, you'll always remember the helicopter sort of influence there
and those being around, but I can still sort of picture when you were at the top of the
stairs and I was waiting for you there and kind of the front row.
with our immediate family and those sorts of images are still in my mind, but a lot of the other
stuff, I just, you know, it just was such a whirlwind and you're always kind of bouncing
back and forth. So it's weird. It's weird. I remember sort of wishing I wouldn't have gotten
a haircut, like sort of weird little things like that. You're like, oh, why don't I just get my
haircut right before? Yeah. So like just little stuff, but, um, yeah.
Yeah, it's hard for me to remember a lot of the details.
Do you, well, actually, I want to go back to the Brad Paisley thing because that was,
I mean, there's so many great moments for me for the entire weekend.
But the Brad Paisley moment, as you know, I love surprises.
And for those of you who don't know the backstory, Ryan had given me a poem on our first one-on-one date at C.
world. Well, that was called something about her. And he had it made. So Rick Cowling, the Rick Cowling
band was the band that was at our wedding. And he worked with Sadler, one of our close friends and our
manager at the time to get in touch with Rick Cowling. Rick Cowling made the poem into a song. So he
put it to music. And then you contacted Brad Paisley because I had been in a Brad Paisley video and
asked if he would record it right and be there and so I didn't know any of this was going on and
we are the ceremony is done we are taking pictures that I have waited forever to take right I mean
I want these pictures you know I love pictures and I'm like we are going to get really good pictures
and Ryan is like okay can we be done okay can we be done okay can we be done and I'm like would
you stop rushing me we are taking pictures
these are going to be what I look back on for the rest of my life. I need this moment. And so I'm like,
stop rushing me. So I'm in the ceremony dress and then I have to get changed into the other
dress. And you could just tell, Ryan is like pacing back and forth, like so stressed out. And I'm
like, what is his problem? Like, calm down. We just got married. Like, we're supposed to be
enjoying this. Little do I know that Brad Paisley has a hard out. Like he has to be, right? He has
to be out by a certain time or he wasn't going to be able to sing the song for our first
dance at all. So Ryan's like, oh my God, would you please get your stupid dress on and let's go.
But it was the best moment ever to walk into that room after I had my reception dress on and Brad
is sitting there and he serenates us with not only a Brad Paisley song. He did record it. It is on
iTunes um but with a song that had such sentimental value and was a poem that you wrote for me like
it was just the best surprise it will go down as one of the best moments of my life so thank you
for that you're welcome it was a great moment for me also yeah I'm glad we folded off
Mindy Weiss helped a ton to.
She was instrumental in getting Rick to write the song.
And then, you know, Rick had to also, he was super generous and he had to agree to let Brad also sing it.
And so there was a lot that had to happen behind the scenes that people helped me out with.
It was good to have the support.
So I'm so thankful to all of those people, everybody, Rick Cowling, Brad Paisley, Mindy, Wysse, Sadler, anyone else who,
Chris Marcy probably he helped a little bit Brad's manager at the time I don't know even
his wife who asked me to be on her show and introduce me to Brad like all of those had had to
kind of happen but anyway I I just love that moment but we were going to go into after you were
sharing that stuff I was going to ask you if there was anything that you did regret like
would you thinking back on it and um you know we did have a lot of fights about the actual like
whether or not we were going to do it on television whether um Charlie was going to be there
which watching that it's just like so strange like yeah so weird I mean love for Charlie you know
like he was just there kind of doing a job but
How awkward was that for you to have him there in the room?
I mean, I literally laughed out loud watching it.
The fact that Charlie's like, let's listen in.
Like, as your dad's giving you like this memorable speech.
So strange.
I think there were like the options were either like to have Charlie do it or there was some other option that was way worse.
It was they would, the cameras were going to be in our face.
24-7. That was the other option. Yeah. So I think for me, once we agreed to do the wedding on
television, I feel like internally I just had to surrender to the process. And that might be one
regret is, and I think it turned out really well. Yeah. And Mindy did an awesome job. But
there was, there were a lot of things that were beyond our control. And thank goodness we were able to
get it where we got it and not at, like, I think originally they were going to try to do it
at Mall of America or something like super commercial.
Oh my gosh.
I don't even remember that.
Really?
Did we talk about doing it at Mall of America?
When it was still just Warner Brothers doing it, but then bail resorts kind of stepped in and
Adam Aaron offered up their property.
And so that part worked out well.
In hindsight, you sort of, we were just so naive coming out of the process.
and like these are stupid superficial considerations, but I feel like we probably could have
negotiated a little bit more out of it than what we did for what we gave up and for what
it turned out to be.
But I think ultimately we both just decided that we were going to, I were just going to go
with the flow and see how it all turned out.
And I wouldn't go back and change anything knowing where we are now.
And I would be afraid that if we did something different, that maybe everything wouldn't have turned out as well as it has for us.
And so it's one moment in time in our relationship.
I think everybody that was there, friends and family had a great time.
At the world at the time was a different place and people tuned in to watch it for whatever reason.
And I think we still hear kind of cool stories.
about people's experiences way back then and who they shared time with watching the show.
And so all of that stuff has been really rewarding, you know, for all we really did was just
get married on television and it had a pretty big impact on not only us, but on a lot of people.
So I really don't have any major regrets.
Yeah. The one regret I do have is that, you know, we didn't have any.
hands in kind of planning this part of it.
But the fact that our immediate family was in the front row and they didn't have like for
every row there was a speaker so that people, we had mics on so that people at the
ceremony could actually hear us because the helicopters were really loud.
But our immediate family couldn't hear us because they didn't have, you know, a speaker in
front of them so they couldn't hear so like hindsight again 2020 like if we had done it inside then
you know everyone could actually have been apart but it was such a beautiful setting i mean those
that gazebo or orchway or whatever you call it and all of the flowers that mark's garden brought in
and just what minnie did with the setting was just stunning um so you know
I mean, weighing things, but I really do wish that our family could have actually heard what we were saying
and didn't have to watch it on television afterwards.
But at least they could, I guess.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, thanks for coming on and sharing your thoughts.
I actually get to talk to Mindy next.
I'm so excited.
Oh, boy.
Tell our I said, no.
Actually, I want you to tell everyone what Mindy did.
Like, how much do we love Mindy Weiss?
I mean, she made you feel, because I was obviously, you know, all in it with her.
It was like my dream come true to work with her.
But you kind of were keeping yourself at a distance because it wasn't really your thing.
And you thank you.
We're letting me kind of, you know, have my moment.
But she came in and tell them what, tell everyone how she made you feel comfortable.
Well, I mean, clearly Mindy has done this before and she knows.
she had done enough research into both of us to know who I was and what my personality was like
and what your personality was like and what you know who was probably going to be more excited
about being super hands-on and who was probably going to be less excited about it and so
she got into I think we had like it was like a car service or something that we had
had gotten and she got in and handed me a sketchbook
with some colored pencils and a game boy and lots of stuff to sort of occupy my time so that while
you guys were picking out flowers and colors and things that were in your realm, I was able to
occupy my time and wasn't super bored with him. She was great throughout the whole thing. She included me
in the things like the cake tasting and the food and that sort of stuff. And then she let me sort of
sit out on a lot of the other stuff that was really more between you and her.
So she was, she made it super easy.
And I think without her, it would have been not only as great a production and as great a wedding,
but it just would have been a little less enjoyable.
Yeah, I agree.
So she did a great job.
I just told Stephanie Leidecker, I got to talk to Stephanie.
And I told her, she's just like your favorite aunt.
You know, like she makes you feel like family, like you're welcome.
And she listens.
Like, she wants it to be your day.
She just makes you feel heard and seen.
And I think that is such a valuable skill, if you will.
It's just part of who she is.
It's not like she really even tries too hard.
She just, that's who she is.
She just is such an incredible human.
Yeah.
So anyway, I get to talk to Mindy.
If you want to pop in and say how you can
But thanks for coming on and sharing your thoughts
And going back to 20 years ago with me
Yeah, I'll see you when we cross paths in the house
I'll see you downstairs
Okay, love you, bye

It turns out that nearly 50% of men think that they could land the plane with the help of

Pull that, turn this.

Hi, Minnie.
Hi.
How are you, Mindy Weiss, my favorite?
I know, you too.
I don't even do this, but when I heard it was you, I went, I can't say no.
Yeah.
I love you so much.
How is life?
I'm the same, buddy.
Still going.
Same.
Same, and same is good because you're the best, so same is good.
Okay, so I have this new podcast.
It's called the Almost Famous OGs.
and we're dedicating an episode to the wedding.
And so obviously, I had to talk to you.
My God.
I mean, hello.
I mean, he will still talk about that wedding.
Do they?
Like, when they come to meetings, do people mention it?
If they're big fans of the show, like, I mean, it's crazy.
Yeah, it's really.
I mean, because you remember, well, maybe you don't, but I remember walking into your office
and I had my old, my old book, my, my, I remember.
And we were sitting over on the couch.
I remember the whole thing.
Yes.
And I remember back in that day, there was no social media.
So I had everything pulled from magazines, you know, all the pages were ripped out, showing you what I liked.
Do people, how do people show up now as brides or, like, birthday girls or whatever?
Do they, do they have like a, they just show?
you social media links or how do they do it they show up with their computers they have a
PowerPoint presentation they show me a Pinterest and they say you know I like all this
but I want it to be different yeah why are you showing me a Pinterest but you know but if you
remember me I do I do what people want and I make suggestions because I like to make
everything a little bit different.
Yeah.
So, but very organized because of social media and, you know, it's a little bit too much because
when you're bringing a magazine pages, there were only so many magazines, you know,
but with Pinterest and all the blogs and all the Instagrammers and, oh, my God, it goes on forever.
And then the next week, it's a whole new look because the weekend.
came and they saw another wedding they loved.
So it's a whole new luck.
I bet. Okay, so what's your favorite thing to plan these days?
Obviously, you do all of them.
And I've been watching the Kardashians lately especially.
And oh my gosh, all of their parties are so amazing.
So what's your favorite thing to do these days?
And just so you know, they, they, those are all their ideas.
Like they are very, very artistic.
and creative and oh they're prepared for our meetings they really are prepared i don't think people
realize that um but the truth is that i'd rather do birthday parties kids parties yes because it's just
not as emotional you know yeah right and it's and it doesn't take a year it was so funny and you know this
about me. I went to a meeting at someone's house on Tuesday and their kids' birthday party was
Saturday and they were out of town and didn't have time. And she was panicking and I said to her
and I didn't know her completely well yet. I mean, I know her, but I didn't know her. I go,
I would have started today anyway. So don't you?
You're amazing. Anything to make people feel good. I mean, honestly, I remember or or like,
not stress. I will never forget when we were in the limo and you handed Ryan the folder of all
of his stuff and gave him a game boy and like cards just to make him feel good.
Yes.
I think that's what set you apart.
Like you're not just about.
I hope so.
I hope so because people think I'm something I'm not.
Do you know what I mean?
Like before they meet me, they're, they come in and I think they think I'm going to have a headset.
or something and sometimes I come in sweats and one time I'm running in because sometimes I'm
late and the mother and father go we're waiting for Mindy I go oh well here I am so I really think
there's a lot of smoke and mirrors because yeah because you know I don't think they expect
me to be just who I am who I really am you know and stuff and
And I still say in interview process, I said, look, if my kids call or my grandkids call, I stop our meeting and I take the call.
I'll be right back.
But if that bothers you, I'm not the right person.
Totally.
And that's why I love you.
Oh, thank you.
It's real life.
It's real.
It's real.
I always said to people, you are like my favorite big sister or my favorite aunt because.
You just make people feel like you made me and Ryan just feel loved.
Like every part of it, there was no stress from you.
You're so positive and so just helpful at calming people down in such a stressful situation.
But in your situation, it's like I didn't want you guys to miss out because it's such a short period.
You know what I mean?
And you had to do it quick based on production schedules and, you know, and I was determined that you got as much at a wedding planning, like a normal.
Yeah.
Not that you weren't normal, but you were in a very different.
No, but we were being filmed, but I know what you mean.
Yes.
Yeah.
So I tried to do all the cuteness and all that stuff.
So you felt like a bride.
And I remember your rule that, and I think I'm right, that you wouldn't let them stop the production while you were while.
you were walking down the aisle.
Was that you?
Like they couldn't stop.
What do you mean?
So the TV?
Yeah, like when they were filming, I really think.
Oh, I wanted it all filmed.
Do you know why?
Because in our contract, they did say that we could have a videographer.
Right.
And we could have our photographer, but I didn't bring anybody.
So this was my wedding video.
Like this was me remembering.
This is me like having it on film to remember.
for the rest of my life. So that's funny. I don't remember that, but that seems familiar,
you know, that I would say, no, we need to continue. Continue on. Don't stop. Yeah, I remember that.
Yeah. I thought that was really important, too. Yeah. Yeah, I wanted it to be my, my wedding, our wedding.
I didn't want it to be a television production, even though it was both. I wanted it to feel more like
a wedding that all of my friends and family would go to you normally. Yeah.
Yeah.

So what was your favorite detail?
Because I know people didn't see everything.
And I feel like I need the answer to this.
But do you remember what your favorite detail of the wedding was?
Well, the thing I think that became a trend, you know,
that was our variegated chair covers.
Yes.
from that became a big trend so that was it oh yeah oh for sure i mean i don't think anybody had
done that um so i love that but nobody really got to see your reception which i thought you were
going to say that right yeah so i didn't either i didn't get to see it minnie you remember i told you
i was like wait there were couches by the pool i didn't even get to see those yeah all that you
asked for we had there.
But, you know, even in normal situations, the bride and group miss a lot.
You know, there's so much.
And you guys are very warm and fuzzy to your guests.
So that was very important to you that you said hi to everybody and, you know, all that stuff.
So you miss it.
You just miss and but that's normal.
You know, that's why we say, I have a lot of people go,
I don't want video.
We'll never watch it.
And I said, you really do.
You really want it filmed when people are talking to you and people pass away.
And then you have that, you know, 3D kind of talking and, you know, not just a picture.
So I always say, okay, fine.
And then the week up, I go, you need video.
Just reconsider it.
Yeah.
For sure.
Agreed.
Was there any stressful moment that maybe people didn't see that you had to deal with behind the scenes that day?
Yes.
Or that weekend?
Yeah.
You're like so much.
Well, I think the production crew, who was amazing, and I talked to a lot of them way after the wedding.
But they hadn't done a wedding.
So they didn't have all the stuff.
like they would come to us and go, we need ribbons.
We need, do you have anything pretty we could put the vowson?
Do you have, like they didn't have any of that.
So, yeah, you know, us just doing our job and then setting up things for camera to make it, you know, I guess it came from, it came from the bachelor, the word juzh, you know, that.
I know, me and Lisa Levinson.
We, I remember talking to her about how do we spell it because she said it all the time.
all the time. It just was on the Kardashians. It was on one of their episodes where Chris is
like in the phone going, Siri, how do you spell judge? And I was like, I have had this conversation
20 years ago before this word was a word. Like we invented it. And I didn't know what it meant.
So I said to Lisa, what is this is? Juj they can keep talking. Is it like just fixing everything up?
So it's more than it is? And she goes, yes, that's it. You know, so.
yep that's totally it and you did it i mean looking back because i of course follow you on
