I'm Simone Boys, host of the Brightside podcast,
and on this week's episode,
I'm talking to Olympian, World Cup champion,
and podcast host, Ashlyn Harris.
My worth is not wrapped up in how many things I've won
because what I came to realize is
I valued winning so much that once it was over, I got the blues, and I was like, this is it.
For me, it's the pursuit of greatness.
It's the journey.
It's the people.
It's the failures.
It's the heartache.

This is the Ben and Ashley I, almost famous podcast with IHeartRadio.
It's the Almost Famous Podcast.
We have some special breaking news.
You know how they do that?
It's the breaking news in Bachelor Nation.
And we're here to talk about it because we promise you to be as quick and to as accessible as possible.
The first breaking news that we need to talk about today is we have a new Bachelor that's been announced at a random time without a lot of publicity around it.
I think it's a great choice.
But we're going to talk about it today because it just came out of nowhere.
There was no warning.
There was no, like, it was just all of a sudden, Ashley, our new bachelor, Grant Ellis, was announced after the episode last night.
Why would they do it like this?
Well, according to Rob Mills, you know, the big guy over at ABC's reality division, he's saying that they announced so early so that girls can still apply to be on Grant's season.
because normally by the time
that the Bachelors announced
the whole cast has been chosen
there might be a few that slip
through the gates
but maybe they're going to really
cast around him which is a great idea
and one that we've really
kind of pushed for
for a while because then you'll find
perhaps better compatibility
it's true
okay so in all transparency
you and I
watch the screener so we don't
watch it on broadcast television. Do you know how they announced? Was it during the episode? Was it
right afterwards? Like, how did this all go down? Oh, no. It was on social media.
They didn't even do an interview with this. They didn't have any live footage at all.
I was reading some of the spoiler accounts and they were saying that there was no plan to
have any live segment. So they were assuming that it was going to be an internet announcement.
It's also weird that he wouldn't be on Good Morning America for the announcement during the morning.
And instead, they did it right after his elimination from the show.
This just feels like a non-event and it should be a massive event.
Like the announcement of a lead should be like the thing.
It should bring people together.
They should all be talking about it.
Maybe I'm wrong.
I would assume some of our listeners right now feel like we're spoiling something for them.
Like they're seeing this come through and they're like,
I had no idea that Grant was announced as The Bachelor.
You think so?
I feel like if you're on social media and you watch The Bachelor,
it probably comes up with your algorithm.
But it's certainly the least celebrated
announcement of a Bachelor in a very long time.
It is bizarre to me.
I don't 100% believe Rob Mills's reasoning.
I would say that it could be part of it.
But there's got to be more.
and I think it's, I think this is bizarre.
Well, let me tell you a little bit about our newest bachelor,
just in case you don't know that he is your bachelor, and he is.
Grant Ellis is 30 years old.
His charm and good looks were definitely something that Jin Tran was into.
He had a lot of charm, a lot of good looks.
From Ashley and I's perspective, he's a great choice.
I think initially in the season, he almost felt like a Sam where he was saying the right thing too much.
But then that stopped.
It did.
And we started to get to know him better.
He is a self-admitted mama's boy.
Again, he is a former professional basketball player who is now a day trader.
And he, this is what he says about himself, when he's not immersed in the fast-paced world of finance, you can find him cheering on the Lakers, hitting strikes at the bowling alley, or belting out tunes at karaoke nights.
ABC is obviously very excited about this choice.
he will be the second black bachelor of all time.
He is also somebody that I think Bachelor Nation will really rally behind.
Because I do believe for as little as he was really shown,
he was one of those maybe three or four guys this season
that the audience was like, I want to know more about that guy.
Like he has something special.
I haven't watched the last 20 minutes of this episode yet.
was there any moment with Grant this episode that you said ah
bachelor material right there and because even though he didn't have a
he didn't have a huge storyline this entire season
sometimes they pick a lead based on one moment
can we think of one moment I can think of one from last week's episode but you go
first it was shot like the only thing about this last episode that was
memorable from Grant's perspective is that his
elimination was shocking. I was shocked that he actually got eliminated, but there was really
nothing else. In fact, if you listen to the episode with Jason and Molly, Mesnick that we recorded
about the episode, all of us yesterday, before we knew he was The Bachelor, said it's either
going to be Jonathan or shockingly Spencer because they set them both up. And maybe Marcus even
because of Marcus's episode was so memorable and so important, those three,
were the people we talked about as being the next bachelor.
Grant was never mentioned
because it just felt like they didn't do a lot
to get him to that point.
I don't think he did anything wrong.
I don't think the show showed him enough
to get him there.
Ben, the most memorable moment
that I think Grant had this entire season
was probably when he was talking with Marcus
and he was saying that he was really falling in love with Jen
and that he was kind of revealing this
and he wanted to keep it a private thing.
It was just endearing.
I agree.
I'm confused right now.
Not because he's the choice.
I feel like after his one-on-one date,
after that moment with Marcus,
getting to know more about him,
they had an opportunity here to create a star.
Like to create somebody that everybody was like,
of course he's going to be our bachelor.
He's got to be the bachelor.
We couldn't think of anybody else except him to be the bachelor.
He was made to be The Bachelor.
I don't think people are going to be upset with him as you have a choice.
I think people are going to be excited about it.
But I think most people's reaction is going to be, I just don't know him yet, which is such a weird place for the lead to come from.
Question, why would they, if they had in their head, this guy could be Bachelor material, why wouldn't they extend his storyline?
Especially since he gets far enough.
That's where I'm confused, because they obviously knew he was going to be the Bachelor.
way before these episodes were actually finally cut.
They don't final cut them until almost like a week and a half before the episode airs.
They knew this announcement was coming.
Why did they not start to build him up for this moment?
I don't know how to, that's why I'm confused on where this came from and why it came now.
Yeah.
And why, you know, and why then they did the announcement like they did.
They're like hiding this guy.
I don't get it.
I know.
Yeah, really weird.
I want to also say that, you know, reiterate the fact that we have liked Grant over the past couple episodes.
We were, like you said, a little suspicious of him possibly being like too smooth early on.
But also, I feel myself being pulled to be more interested in the other guys that are still remaining in the top four.
And, you know, you and I still hold that theory that Jen doesn't pick anyone.
So all four of these guys are up for grabs as being the bachelor.
you and I probably don't see Jeremy as being The Bachelor.
But Jonathan,
love Jonathan.
I've already seen Buzz about people wanting him to be The Bachelor.
And then, well, Devin would be very interesting.
And then Marcus.
Marcus is also been spoken about as being a Bachelor contender.
There are some TikToks going around right now
that there might be some controversy around him.
But Marcus has been somebody that people,
regarded as like the bachelor type material the entire season so it's not a bad choice it's a good
not a bad choice but like also why we feel so much or we're starting to feel a lot for these
other guys yeah it's again it's very weird that they did not make him like a hero or a main
character i would say he is not a main character this season he had every opportunity to be
he had every chance to be he started out that way and then he just disappeared
And I don't think that's his doing.
I think it's the show's doing.
And I'm going, why?
Like, why are you hiding this guy?
He, if you're so confident that he is your next guy, put it in my face.
Like, make it, make it as known to me as possible.
Yeah.
I just need to say that Jen left his week on her season and we felt like we knew Jen a lot more than him.
Yeah, I'd actually say, I still didn't feel like I knew Jen, but I do feel like I knew her better than I know market or I know grand.
Grant, yeah.
It's crazy.
I don't know.
We're excited.
It'll be good.
I hope they start to get him out there.
I hope we start to learn more about him to hear more.
I mean, he's obviously is.
He's very charming.
He's very good looking.
I think in Jen's words, he's hot.
He's hot.
He's so hot.
Was her quote.
And that is great because they wanted another Joey.
And Joey is pretty universally hot.
So now we have another hot bachelor.
And we did complain, well, no offense, the other guys.
All very good looking guys have been the lead.
But we haven't had some.
someone, you know, there was a period where he wasn't universally hot and Grant certainly is.
He's going to do all right for himself. I'm sure he's going to do just fine. Well, hey, that's the
breaking news. We have a new bachelor announced. Grant Ellis, 30 years old, former professional
basketball player now in finance. Day trader, I think, is the profession they said for him.
We'll be back with another episode of the Almost Famous podcast. We actually have more breaking news
this week that we'll be sharing right away, like as soon as we record it.
But until next time, I've been Ben.
