Will You Accept This Advice podcast, and I have such beautiful women with me.
We're in Tahoe for the annual, we're calling it annual, pickleball tournament since last year,
and you guys, I just won.
I know, you came with a crass you did.
You had a crush you did.
No, and you know what?
is I see you on the cake.
It's the best part.
Jess and I,
Bob's wife,
we switched and we played
against the boys.
The girl is.
That makes it so much better.
I thought you and Ryan.
You and Jessica.
You and Jessica won.
I was so much.
I love that.
Oh, she's out there with the crowd.
I wish I saw it.
I wish I saw that.
It wasn't.
They're talking about it right now.
I bet.
Anyway,
okay.
Welcome Katie.
Susan and Joan.
So thank you ladies for
here. So happy to be here. Thank you. Okay. So we're going to talk dating advice. We have got
a married. Susan is long distance in a relationship and Joan is long distance engaged. So I feel
like we have very different perspectives and I'm very excited to get all of your perspectives for the
people out there who are in the dating pool. I haven't been in the dating pool for a little bit.
Quite some time. We'll be married 24 years in December.
So, like, it's been a while.
So I...
Can I interrupt for one second?
Yes, of course.
I just said earlier, you and your husband were like arm in arm on the boat this morning,
and I said, look at that after all those years.
They're still in love.
It's so nice to see.
And every one of us want that for ourselves.
Thank you.
I'll never get 24 years in because...
You might?
No, I'll be dead.
No, you can't.
You can make it? No, honestly, just I need to roll off that as well. I saw your husband. He went
into the water and he came out of the water and you guys were kissing and hugging and huggy.
Don't you love that? And I was like, oh my God, that's so beautiful. So I went to go get my camera and get a video, totally missed it.
But it was such a beautiful moment. And I think that's, yeah. And people see that.
Yeah. You don't, you don't see that too often, unfortunately. Yeah. I was just that they're in love.
Like, everybody, I had a very supportive husband, but we were not touching feely. You guys were very outward.
about it and that, like, you continue to show what you showed on TV, like a million years ago.
Thank you.
And you still have it.
Sorry, we're not, I try not to be obnoxious about it.
That is not.
No, no.
It's just, like, I love holding hands.
BDA, I'm all of it.
Yeah.
That's your love language and you guys align with your love language is beautiful.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Just saying.
Thank you.
Move on.
Keep going.
No, I'm just kidding.
Okay, so let's talk about you guys.
So I want to talk about dating and obviously,
one thing we all have in common is that we went on national television to date.
So we've got that to talk about.
Yes, you did.
And for some of us, it worked out.
Let's go back, though, in our minds to when we were single, what was your general approach
to dating?
So, like, in, like, our part two, it's very different than part one.
Part one, you're looking for, like, a father to your children.
That's what you're looking for in Ryan, like.
You saw how loving he was.
Yes.
Somebody to build a life with.
It's very different in part two.
You're looking for somebody to like enjoy the second half of life because you've already
built the other stuff.
You already have your family, your home.
You've probably financially secure or more financially secure than you were when you're
younger.
So you're looking for somebody that is fun.
Yep.
And that you can, you know, enjoy the second half of life that you've worked really so
hard to create.
Like it was hard because my husband passed away.
And I had this like blank hole of future in front of.
of me. And I had to recreate it. And I had to decide, like, you know, all these plans that he and I
had made are all gone. And, like, what type of person I wanted to have, like, in the second half,
like the second phase of life. And it was, like, somebody that I want to have fun with.
And that would, like, share in, like, these adventures, like, the bucket list. I could just
start doing the bucket list now. And how do you guys checked anything off your bucket list?
A couple little things. Like, not a ton, but we, like, so we're going to Europe in the end of
this month. And that's a little, I've been to Europe a bunch of times, but that's a, that's a
always been a bucket list. Like we're doing the Riviera's and I've always wanted yet. So that's
going to be really fun. So you look for something different in the second half of life.
That totally makes sense. Yeah. Do you feel, um, oh my God. She can't understand.
Menopause. It steals your thoughts. So they go, poof in a bubble. It was there like one second ago.
Yeah. I hear it. It was there. One second ago. And then it went bye-bye. Yeah. Okay. So what about you, Susan?
Yeah. I think some days my.
The kids were like, mom, seriously.
Oh, same.
I can see it all the time.
They're like, mom, seriously, I told you that yesterday.
Mom, seriously, I told you that, but never.
I'm like, I'm sorry.
You never told us that?
I said, yes, I did.
Can't wait.
It's all of these wonderful things.
Okay, so what about you?
What was your general approach to dating?
So I kept trying and trying.
Went on TV, still didn't get it.
That's okay.
And I was on vacation.
Okay.
And I found it.
When I came off the show, I really didn't want anybody.
I fell in love with myself on the show.
Love that.
So important.
I was really okay with who I am.
And at 60 plus years old, that's big, right?
I didn't need, I had new friends.
And people that did what I do in life.
I want to travel now.
I want to enjoy life.
Yeah.
And one night on vacation with Kathy, we had a spread.
with martinis and I was wide awake and couldn't go to sleep and I downloaded Tinder.
Okay.
And I met a French man that I felt madly in love with, madly in love with.
It's been a year and a half.
Stop, I had no idea.
But things have shifted.
Okay.
I love that man forever.
He's like the perfect man.
His work ethics aren't understood.
That's huge. They don't line up with hers.
It doesn't work.
Got it.
Oh, you're seeing his work ethic.
They don't work.
Susan is an incredibly hard worker.
If you've known her.
Yeah.
She works, works, works every minute of every day.
And he works to eat.
Yeah.
If he has food in the kitchen, he doesn't work.
Oh, got it.
So do you think that's a cultural difference because he's French?
Maybe.
So when they go on vacation or holiday, they go a month.
We as Americans, if you're lucky, you get two weeks.
Totally.
You know what I'm saying?
And how do you do that?
Right.
I think back in his story,
as he says, he used to have lots of money, restaurants that set in the third.
The divorce was a shock for him.
He fled to the island, so he lives in St. Martin.
Okay.
And when I go to stay with him, he doesn't have air condition downstairs, only in the bedroom.
He lives.
Minimal.
Minimal.
I like to eat steak.
I like to eat lamb chops.
You like to get espresso martini.
Yeah.
And it took a year and a half.
So I'm not saying just.
when you see a red flag, don't ignore it.
Yeah.
I'll get colorblind when I fall in love.
Oh, totally.
You know, and it breaks my heart because I adore them.
Yeah.
So are you guys still together or?
Yes, but I feel a different way inside.
Yeah.
I can't say forever now.
Yeah.
Like my dream was to live happily ever after.
We'll do the winters on the island and the summer's up.
Oh.
Yeah, that was my dream.
Picture perfect.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he's a dreamer.
What I feel like is so important about what you said, and this goes for people who are young,
like 20s, that knowing yourself and loving yourself before you go into any relationship is so important.
So important.
Right?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
And don't settle.
I always say that.
Because me, I'm Mrs. Fixit, right?
Yeah.
I always have a broken heart at man and don't know what real love feels like, and I love them to
that they know after they've been with me.
Yeah, right.
I find needy men that I fix,
and I feel like God put me here sometimes
just for that purpose,
and then it's over in the year or two.
Once they're fixed.
Once they're fixed.
That's when you should be like pat yourself on your back
and enjoy it, but you don't.
Have you ever done an enneagram test?
What's that?
It's like a personality test.
Oh, I've heard of those.
I wonder if you're a helper.
Does that resonate with you like that word?
She's a helper.
She's a fixer.
I'm a fixer.
Yeah. So you should do an enneagram test.
Like I used to have a podcast.
What would it tell me though?
If it told me something, would I feel differently?
So you can do like research into who you are as that person, as that personality type and like what you should be doing and what like triggers you and all of these amazing things.
We're going to talk.
It's great.
I used to do a podcast called Better, et cetera.
And I had this guy who wrote a book on Eniator.
I'll get it. I'll remember what the book is. But it's really kind of powerful, especially because you are
like about like self-betterment and empowerment and loving yourself and knowing yourself. And it really is
so fascinating to like learn the kind of personality type you are. And what you can do to. You learn about
yourself. Totally. Do things better for yourself. Why not to attract the same kind of people.
I don't want to put him down at all because I still love the man. Yes. But he lives far away.
and the language is a whole other story.
Oh, gosh, I bet.
Does he speak English fluently?
No.
Oh, wow.
I wouldn't say fluent.
Oh, really?
And my French, I took lessons at class every week.
I mean, you can ask a girlfriend, Heather over here.
She speaks very well.
Her brain must be bigger than mine, and she retains more than I do.
Yeah.
I've tried it all, and I'm never going to speak friends.
And he even says when I try, I sound Spanish.
Oh, no.
That's what we all do.
She's not going to encouraging you a lot of that.
Oh, gosh, if I go to another country, I start saying,
Ola, or whatever.
Yeah, Ola, too.
Okay, so what about you?
What were your general?
I think for me, I was dating in my 20s,
and I was never one that was, you know,
searching for a one-night stand or anything like that.
I really had to connect with somebody.
So for me, in order to really connect with somebody
and get to the next step with them,
I always looked at it like this.
I don't have kids.
Yeah.
But if I were to have a daughter,
would I want my daughter to be with the man I'm...
Wow.
You know, obviously not.
But you know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
Great test, though.
Yes.
Yeah.
And I also thought of it, like,
I want to be...
I never had role models of what love looked like.
My mom never got married.
And I always thought about, like, because I'm so maternal, that I always want my kids to look up to who I marry our relationship and want that for themselves.
So for me, I was always looking for somebody who was kind, compassionate, all those things, funny, goofy, but somebody who can be a good father.
And that's something I didn't have in my life.
I didn't have a good father.
So I think that's, like, when I first met Zach, I always tell people this.
you can just tell how sweet of a man he is.
He's so kind.
And immediately,
you just know he's going to be an amazing father.
So that's what I want for.
It's women's instincts.
I didn't date too much,
but I had a good head on my shoulders.
I knew myself worth.
I loved myself.
And I knew what I brought to the table.
Yeah.
Right.
So that's why I was also very confident on The Bachelor.
Yeah.
Everybody's like, oh, like,
how are you still friends with Gabby?
How are you still friends with all these girls?
I'm like, easy, peasy.
Like, I know who I am.
I know what to bring to the table.
You don't want to be with me.
I felt the same way.
I accept, right.
Then that's fine.
I'll be okay.
No matter what,
I will be okay.
Totally.
But I know what I want for myself.
I know the type of man I want for myself.
And I want for my kids.
Yes.
Future kids.
Love it.
Oh, yeah.
I love it.
You know early on as a young person.
It took years to find that confidence.
Yeah.
For sure.
A lot of maturity in dating.
Yeah.
I feel like I'd never had that confidence when I was younger.
but as I got older
and I had a really
wonderful relationship with my late husband
when I went into the dating world
like my second chapter
I was way more confident and I was
I was really
super picky
as you should be
as everybody should be
I would have been happy being alone also
yeah
totally that's the big thing
is an okay alone yes
because that's where people settle
when they're not okay
exactly yeah

A new podcast from Together and I Heart Women's Sports.
Because let's be real.
Women's sports is giving us way too much to talk about these days.
So Kelsey Finler, she became the first female solo rower to go from California to Hawaii.
My first thought is like, what's up with the snacks?
Like, what are we eating?
The highlights, the rivalries, the breakout stars, the moments that take over your entire timeline.
And the conversations that start during the game and somehow keep going all week.
Every week, we're breaking down the biggest stories across women's stories.
Sports. Naomi Osaka showing out. She beat Sabalinka.
Shout out to you, Naomi. You get the palm, Naomi. You get the palm for that.

The show is famously super accessible so you can easily jump into any of our 650 episodes and understand what's going on.
We recommend some of our recent episodes with Ben Stiller.
The definition of what is a movie has kind of changed anywhere too, right?
What do you think it is now?
It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology.
Danny McBride.
Oh, that's fantastic.
And you make it on, you make your own.
That's great.
I call him Terro Reed.
It's a good name.
They're all named after cast members of American Pie.
Yeah.
I call, I don't, I never looked up if she was in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski.
Yeah.
I don't think she was an American Pie, but I still like that.
Haven't looked it up.
She was prominent around the same time.
Yeah.
Then Mary Steenbergin.
Why are you guys talking to me?
I'm worried.
I'm worried.
Why are she talking so down to me?
me that you think I don't understand your little play game.
I just really, I get it.
I'm trying to set you up for success here.
Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
What about advice?
Does anyone have any amazing advice that they recall getting or giving to someone when they were dating?
Maybe on the show, did anyone give you advice when you started?
thinking about going on the show or when you signed up to be on the show.
I say, hesitate, pause before you jump in with both feet.
Yeah.
Do one foot at a time.
Be thoughtful.
And really try to get to know who they are and what their values are.
Yep.
And I would just kind of go off of your relationship, Susan.
I think you should find somebody off the bat that aligns with the things that you prioritize.
That was the part.
We laugh together.
We're goofy together.
We dance.
He's sincere.
We love it.
We talk.
Yeah.
We communicate.
We're quiet together.
Everything else worked.
Yeah.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
And just like, yeah, just what do you prioritize in a relationship?
Right.
And then making sure that partner, that person that you're dating aligns with those things.
And if they don't and they show those red flags, then you sail on onto the next.
There are plenty of fish in the seat.
Totally.
never settle.
Never settle.
I would say also being married for over 20 years,
your relationships change.
And you can attest to this, like being married,
I feel like, or for a long time,
I feel like marriage changes.
People change in a marriage.
And it's about, like, changing those priorities,
but communicating what those changes are,
or knowing your partner enough to know
what you're prioritizing at that time in your life.
because when we had kids, I was like,
they are my priority.
And that's, you just have to accept that.
And you can actually take, right?
You talk about it.
That's the bottom line.
I love that you're talking about kind of
what it looks like when you're already married,
and that's probably the easier place to talk from
because that's where you are now.
I feel like I got to have that place
and then I had to go backwards and start again.
And I remember being very careful
not to like swipe laughter,
or swipe right or whatever it is, the one that says reject.
Yeah.
Before you get to know the person.
Yeah, totally.
I found a couple guys that I probably wasn't like super attracted to,
but I went on dates just because I kind of needed the practice.
And their sense of humor made them like really, really attractive.
Or the way they treated me, the way they pulled my chair out and made sure that I was okay,
getting into my car, like the kind things they did.
So I think dating apps are doing a big disservice to a lot of people that may connect differently
if they were meeting in person.
And so don't swipe left.
Whatever the rejection one is, don't swipe so quickly.
Totally.
Give people a chance.
Yeah.
So true.
Yes.
Personality makes the person.
It's like love is blind why I feel like that's so popular.
Yes.
I think it's a crazy concept.
It's married at the end.
But I do love the initial love is blind part of it.
I think you have to have some kind of attraction.
Oh, I'm totally right.
I mean, I wouldn't do that for myself.
completely just not look at the person.
Yeah.
I mean, we can fix that.
But, but I feel like attraction is extremely high on the necessities of a successful relationship.
Like they look more attractive when you, you know, when you get to know them.
Right.
Like a sense of humor is very attractive.
A really smart man is very attracted to it.
Yes.
Even if he's not like the best looking guy in the world, like being smart.
Like, banter is really attractive.
Yeah.
such a humor.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And for the young people out there.
And I think these dating apps
are really like removing that whole element.
You're right.
They'd have more situationships, if you will,
than relationships today.
I mean, were you ever on the dating app
since they're kind of a newer thing?
I was a little bit.
Yeah, a little bit, but.
Did you ever go on a date?
Is it like a hookup thing?
Like, are you on Tinder because you want to hook up?
Was that like the general consensus?
I mean, I never went on Tinder.
Not that I'm saying you were.
I think that.
is, that is a thing for sure with Tinder, but I do think some people genuinely take it seriously,
and I know there are love stories that come with them.
I got it.
But I will say Tinder, I think, is notorious for having that kind of, you know, Netflix and
chill.
Whereas I think Hinge was, I think Hinge is great.
It kind of, it kind of gives you like a brief kind of summary of the person.
Do they smoke?
Do they drink?
Do they have kids?
And, you know, if they answer the questions.
Exactly.
So, you know, I didn't mind.
I answered the questions.
Got it.
Yeah, I didn't mind Hinge, and there was, like, little blurbs that kind of show a little bit of your personality and does that entice you.
And then you have a conversation.
Yes.
So I didn't.
I liked Hinge, but I think for me, I just, yeah, I don't, I don't know.
I did go on a couple dates, but I feel like dating culture these days is so different.
And it's, I think I was a little jaded, too.
I was just like, are you like, like, what are we doing here?
Like, I'm here to actually find somebody.
I'm looking for.
I so much love to give the right person.
I don't want to hook up.
And like I said earlier, I wasn't a promiscuous person.
Like that, I didn't get off on that.
I really need to connect with you.
Literally.
So, yeah.
And honestly, when I started to date, I got the call to be on The Bachelor.
Yeah.
Okay.
So perfect timing.
Aren't you the lucky one over here?
I know.
I did get so lucky in so many ways.
And I'm married people for a living.
And most of the couples, young couples,
They met on dating apps.
Really?
Yes.
Oh, that's interesting.
So it's like a 15-50.
How long have you been doing it?
Married people.
About 11 years.
Okay.
Do you feel like it's changed?
Are you dating app?
No.
Do you feel like it's gotten more popular to meet on a dating app with the people?
Oh, most definitely.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Everything's online these days.
Yeah, you're right.
It's convenient.
It's a good start.
I just, it shouldn't be the finish.
I agree.
It should be just the, like, the beginning.
And how about going back on after a relationship?
Like, oh, I do.
don't want to do that again.
It's like a job.
No, it truly is.
It should be a job.
It's a job.
It's like, I hated it.
The newest tracks.
Let's go.
New music.
And the next big thing.
Always on the new music first.
Your first place to hear it all.
Because you're going to like it, love to want to play it twice.

And we're the host of everyone watches women's sports,
a new podcast from Together and IHart Women's Sports.
Because let's be real. Women's sports is giving us way too much to talk about these days.
So Kelsey Finler, she became the first female solo rower to go from California to Hawaii.
My first thought is just like, what's up?
with the snacks. Like, what are we eating?
The highlights, the rivalries, the breakout stars, the moments that take over your
entire timeline. And the conversations that start during the game and somehow keep going
all week. Every week, we're breaking down the biggest stories across women's sports.
Naomi Osaka, showing out, she beat Sabalinka.
Shout out to you, Naomi. You get the palm, Naomi. You get the palm for that.
Because we're not just interested in what happened. We're interested in why everyone's talking about it.

breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of Ramos
iconic characters, revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about
our creative process.
How did any of this get made?
Why do we think that was a good idea?
We're ready to talk about it.
And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life.
Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Chrysler, the mayor
himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more.
Kyle is going for it here.
You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody.
I thought he was going to write.
I thought you were all going to write a song.
I remember you thinking that.
Listen to Podlandia.
Ayo rewatch on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

The definition of what is a movie has kind of changed anywhere, too, right?
What do you think it is now?
It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology.
Danny McBride.
He loves over.
Oh, that's fantastic.
And you make it on, you make your own.
That's great.
I call him Terro Reed.
It's a good name.
They're all named after cast members of American Pie.
Yeah.
I call, I don't, I never looked up if she was a.
in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski.
I don't think she was an American
pie, but I still like that. I haven't looked it up.
She was prominent around the same time.
Then Mary Steenberg.
Why are you guys talking to me?
I'm worried.
Did you understand the movie?
Why are you talking so down to me
that you think I don't understand your little
play game?
I just really. I get it.
I'm trying to set you up for success here.

Okay, I love this because I feel like the four of us are kind of on the same page in terms of like female empowerment and knowing yourself and loving yourself.
What do women need to stop putting up with in terms of dating?
Ghosting number one.
I think only communicating via the app and never meeting.
And I think it's, that's why it feels like a job.
Yes.
Immediately.
Yeah, I'm like, you need to meet in person.
Cup of coffee, five minutes.
Let's have some eye attack.
And you should make a strict, like, I'm only going to DM for four days.
Right.
And then after that, if you don't want to go out on a date with me, if you don't want to meet me in person, I'm done with you.
No, no.
There's a reason you're not wanting to get in person.
I did hear, like, it's way more successful if you start DMing off an app to, like, book the date like ASAP.
Oh, got it.
That's what I said.
Yeah, because if you, you know, kind of have a conversation, it fizzles out and nothing ever happens.
So it's so important to.
You know if there's chemistry.
I believe it.
in the chemistry.
If it's like, I know within 10 seconds when I sit there.
And there's really important, like, tests that I do on men, which is really mean.
But they are, like, and one of them is how they treat the weight staff.
And if you add, like, a, if you meet for a glass of wine, like, I'll meet you and all that's like, how they treat that bartender.
Agreed.
And how they tip.
Agreed.
Yeah.
So, like, there are easy tests that I can, right.
They're easy tests that I can perform on the man.
Totally agree.
I'll know right away.
For me, when I went out for a meet, I never called, it's not a date.
We're going to meet to decide if we want to plan a date.
Let's just get together and have coffee.
I always want to pay my own way.
Yes, good for you.
I was surprised.
A lot of gentlemen would, no, absolutely not.
They take a gentleman.
And others, oh, that's nice.
Oh, okay.
Noted.
Yes, no, absolutely.
You know what I'm worried about is the generation of my daughter, so she's 17.
they communicate via Snapchat
and they are, that's all they do.
Like, you know, my daughter's dating,
she has a boyfriend and they've been together
like a year and a half and yes,
they get together and they go on dates
and they're, you know, dates with friends, whatever.
But I feel like their generation
that is, you know, going to be in college soon
and on their own soon, is so on snap
that it's too bad.
They need to be in person.
Yeah.
Like actually,
get off your phone, like make it a rule.
I don't know.
Like, when you're together, put your phones together and get off the phone.
I love that.
You said that because lately, Zach and I will obviously have our date night and we'll leave
our phones in the car.
Good for you.
Anytime after dinner, we'll cook together and we'll go on a walk right after dinner.
We leave our phones at home.
Who's idea?
Mine.
It's a great idea.
Great idea.
My husband's so on board.
Like, he's not even like, wait, what?
He's like absolutely.
Totally.
So until you have kids, that is good.
Well, you have kids, that's changing.
Yeah, fair enough.
All right.
Thank you, ladies.
You're amazing.
Thank you.
And thank you for listening to Almost Famous.
Will you accept this advice?
