Starting point is 00:02:09 Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts Welcome to Dirty Rush The Truth About Sorority Life with your host me, Gia Judice, Daisy Kent and Jennifer Fessler Okay. All right, guys. So we had such success talking about date parties that we wanted to do a part two. We got so many people that want to talk about the themes and the mess and the alcohol and the boys and the girls of all of it.
Starting point is 00:02:43 So now we have Rosie joining us. Rosie, where'd you go to school? What's the priority where are you in? I went to Miami of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio, and I was a Delta Gamma. All right. So, and I think you know we're talking about date parties. Yes. Yeah. So tell me a little bit about what was everyone drinking at date parties. Was it always sort of a, was it drunk in madness or were they more contained, your own personal experience? They were definitely drunk kind of madness because we weren't allowed to drink our freshman and sophomore years at date parties because we were under the age of 21.
Starting point is 00:03:21 but everyone would drink anyways, but the little ones were always on watch. So they were usually the ones that were going the craziest. Oh, so you're saying like the freshmen and sophomores who couldn't drink were the ones that were probably pre-partying or whatever, yeah, pre-game and whatever it's called. It would pre-game, like, way too hard, show up, get in trouble, have to leave. But it's kind of just like a right of passage at Miami. But we had this one bar called Brick and like Delta,
Starting point is 00:03:51 Gamma would rent it out or a fraternity would rent it out and we would all go and like drinks were like six dollars like tequila soda vodka sodas or we had this drink called a trash can and it was a full red bowl and like six different liqueurs like they literally would be like I'm gonna throw up I just just you're talking about it is making the bile come okay I know I know and I literally when I was there like we would like order them like crazy and when we like graduate and I'm like, I cannot believe we would drink those, like, so gross. I just, I know like everybody drinks, not everybody, but the young people drink a lot of Red Bull. So what does it do?
Starting point is 00:04:31 So you get wasted, but it just keeps you up. Yeah, and it just, it keeps you up. You're like, yeah. The adrenaline of it, I feel like everyone would just like keep ordering them and then it would just get, it would get messy. I mean, by the end of our date parties, they were, you would leave and then you would go bar hopping. Our, like, schools very much bars. Right. So you could, you would go to, like, Brick for the main function and then you would go to, like, CJs or corner or whatever and continue.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Rosie, did you ever get messy? Yes, I would, unfortunately, I would get messy. Were they always something you look forward to or were they ever, like, was it ever sort of high pressure to find a date? Honestly, so freshman and sophomore year, like, I feel like we all were like, oh my God, like we need to invite boys. Like, we need to get our dates. and it was always like checking like the date doc because the girls you would put your name and put your date next to it and it was like ooh oh like blah blah's bringing him like oh i wonder like if they're a thing whatever right freshman sophomore junior year we went abroad so i don't even remember
Starting point is 00:05:38 our junior year date parties but senior year like we wouldn't even bring dates because our guy friends would just show up anyway so i feel like the pressure was on to get dates when we were freshman and sophomore years and then senior year it was like no one really cared you would just go anyways and was that more fun or less fun oh i thought it was like so much more fun wow because everyone would already like be there you'd walk in see all of like the boy like all the boys that you're friends with already or like interested in like they would just show up anyways which was so fun so we actually had my daughter on but uh she was saying that if she would get in trouble with her sorority if her date got too messed up.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Really? Did you have that? No? No. It was only if we were. Okay. I won't forget, like you, like, we were watched like hawks by like her standard chairs. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:32 And we would literally like get like if we would have like a drink in our hand. Like she would come up and be like absolutely not like to rip it out of our hands. Like we had to be very careful freshman sophomore year. Did they care if you showed up drunk? Yeah. We would have to get called it. into standards. So if we were like, even if we were at like a frat party and we were too drunk, I'll never
Starting point is 00:06:56 forget like our sophomore year, me and my best friend were at this, this rat party with our guy friends and we both were like so drunk and we had a huge like foundation the next day for Delta Gamma. And our standards chair was like, go home right now. Like you're embarrassing us. they were kind of assholes. Yeah, they were assholes. And they literally sent us home.
Starting point is 00:07:23 We were brought into standards the next week. We were like suspended for a date party. We were like, okay. What exactly did you do? We were just like too drunk at the function. Okay. You weren't like stripping. You were just like.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Yeah. It was just like a backyard party. No, it was, they would take it way too seriously. We'd be like, wait, we're not even talking to you guys. Right. Like, you guys have fun. We're having fun. right right one last question so i know that a lot of the day parties are themed so did you do
Starting point is 00:07:54 theme parties like did the sororities do them yes it was mostly the girls that would do like the themed parties that were like super fun and any of your any of them like your favorites oh yeah wait so we the guys would have this thing called catalina wine festival or wine mixer okay and everyone would dress up like they were going to like the real things we would all all be like cute little dresses people were like hats and stuff and then by that was like everyone was trying to get because that was the boys inviting the girls right we were fighting for dates right we all and it was literally like so much fun but like by the end of it everyone like the boys would be like completely covered in red wine like such a mess oh my god live band it was fun they would be like
Starting point is 00:08:43 Y2K or like Western. All right. Well, listen, it doesn't, it seems like that to not impede on your good time. The fact that there were not there many themes, which I'm so glad about. Yeah, it was a blast. Well, thank you so much for joining us. The fact that Y2K was a theme, like I lived Y2K. That is so messed up. In the heat of battle, your squad relies on you.

Starting point is 00:11:43 October 22nd, on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Here we go. Hey, I'm Cal Penn, and on my new podcast, Here We Go again. We'll take today's trends and headlines
Starting point is 00:11:59 and ask, why does history keep repeating itself? You may know me as the second hottest actor from the Harold and Kumar movies, but I'm also an author, a White House staffer, and as of like 15 seconds ago, a podcast host. Along the way, I've made some friends who are experts in science, politics, and pop culture.
Starting point is 00:12:18 And each week, one of them will be joining me to answer my burning questions. Like, are we heading towards another financial crash like in 08? Is non-monogamy back in style? And how come there's never a gate ready for your flight when it lands like two minutes early? We've got guests like Pete Buttigieg, Stacey Abrams, Lili Singh, and Bill Nye. When you start weaponizing outer space, things can potentially go really wrong. Look, the world can seem pretty scary right now, because it is. But my goal here is for you to listen and feel a little better about the future.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Listen and subscribe to Here We Go Again with Cal Penn on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, guys. Christy. So tell me first, where'd you go to school? What sorority were you in? I went to school at the University of Missouri, and I was a Kappa Alpha Theta. So I'm thinking you guys probably had date parties. That's our theme today. We did. We did. We had two every semester. Okay. So, yeah, that's so funny because it's so different at every school. We've talked to someone who had them like every weekend. And so your sorority through two? Did the frats have them?
Starting point is 00:13:32 The fraternities had them every once in a while. I just wasn't one of those people that went to them. I'm going to use the term fraternity parties very loosely, they usually just kind of decided on a whim that they're like, okay, we're going to throw a 70s party tonight. There are fraternities that did have like their spring formals and that obviously was in the spring. Most of this fraternity formals were out of town, which was always kind of like the coolest thing to be asked to. Right.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Why didn't you, why do you say you didn't go to a lot of them? Because I just, that wasn't really my thing. I wasn't that a cool kid. Oh, my God, I love you. Now you're my favorite person I interviewed today, and I interviewed my daughter. That's hilarious. Well, that's sweet. I also wasn't a big drinker in college.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Right. And I think, again, I can only speak on behalf of my experience, but the University of Missouri was kind of very clicky. So, like, half, like a good portion came from St. Louis. A great, a good portion came from Kansas City, and a lot came from Chicago area. So there was kind of already a lot of clicks in college. And I'm from out of state. I'm from Fort Worth, Texas, so I kind of knew no one going to school.
Starting point is 00:14:40 So it wasn't one of those places that, like, a lot of people already had their kind of established friends. So did you rush and pled your freshman year? I did, yeah. So it wasn't a situation where you felt like once you were in a sorority, you were set, you had your best friends and... I think it took some time. Yeah. Again, I think you eventually made friends. I think I didn't feel like I'm not belonged in the sorority until...
Starting point is 00:15:06 probably end a freshman year kind of beginning of sophomore when you at the University of Missouri would be started to live in the house right um sophomore year but again I think it's I was a pledge class of 84 girls wow and then people obviously start to drop out and figure out that they can't afford it or sorority's not for them or their grades can't hold it or they want to transfer school. So I think when we, I was in theta all four years. So I think our graduating class was about
Starting point is 00:15:39 60 when we all together. So again, I think once you start living in the house and you start to go to the events and you start to feel more part of it. And do you remember any date parties in particular that were super fun or any that were not? I know you didn't,
Starting point is 00:15:56 they weren't really your thing, but, or like how about or even like what was, so typically at a date party, did the girls come back? You know, totally, was there's tons of stories? They came back. They were shh-faced. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Oh, tons. So you'll think this is funny, and my mom sure thinks it's funny. I didn't go to a lot of the date parties. I was one of those people that worked check-in at the event. So, like, I was, we had the table in our basement of our sorority house, and we had to check in their names. Luckily, I knew who all these people were, but I had no idea who their dates were. And trying to get their names out of people, like,
Starting point is 00:16:31 people, I was like, no, I need to see your ID. I need to make sure you're 21. People handing me slices of pizza. Oh my God. You're that girl. I love the checking girl. Like having security call me, us having to get someone who's sober to drive us down to the venue that we had to like get people back because we
Starting point is 00:16:50 bust people over there. Right. We like imagine like a school bus. Right. There's one literally behind you as you're talking. Oh maybe. Right there. Yes. Yeah. That's so funny. Like we had to like shuttle everyone out. And so if someone and, you know, threw up on the bus who were so drunk, they couldn't get off. Like, I was one of those people that had to go get them.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Wow. I love that. That's, I mean, I'm sure it wasn't as much fun maybe as your sister's work. No, honestly, it was, it was so funny. And as people that always did kind of the check-in, as I'm sure, you know, we had to have sober sisters, which we all know, likely weren't sober. Right. But, like, sure. And it was just funny to see, like, up, she's back.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Were there any, or any of the girls just notorious for? Tons. Yeah. And I, and then sometimes because I was on the check-in table, I would then get the call on Sunday morning, be like, hey, I heard you were there. Like, can you, like, give us a statement or do you remember what happened? That's horrible. So you had to kind of rat out your sisters?
Starting point is 00:17:50 A hundred percent. I mean, I wouldn't be like, this girl, she did this. Right. But I was like, well, I was there. Like, she was a little wasted or? Yeah, like, all these other. people were there it happened in this location like we unfortunately did have kind of did you ever meet anyone at one of the date parties i mean you were so busy checking everyone in any cute boys
Starting point is 00:18:11 you're checking in um not that i can remember no i mean i remember going to my first um day party which was the the because it's a theme i'll never forget and again i went to the school in the university of missouri so middle of nowhere right the theme was um duck calls and overalls i You elaborate. Yeah, so, like, you were essentially dressed in, like, hunting gear. Like, we wore, like, cut off jeans and, like, camo print. I love that. But that theme was so fun because that was kind of the first time all, like, the freshman class was together.
Starting point is 00:18:46 And that was our first party, like, meeting new people. Again, you're allowed to bring dates. I didn't. So, like, most freshmen just kind of went together. And I thought that was so fun. I mean, one thing that I do remember about going to. to the United States, Missouri and date parties as a lot of people didn't lean into themes a whole lot.
Starting point is 00:19:07 And I think it was just because, like, we were in college and, like, we had no money. Yeah. So, like, you see on TikTok these days of people going elaborate costumes, different caution for every event. And I'm like, we just didn't, we didn't really do that. You know why?
Starting point is 00:19:25 Because the, I think because the kids that don't have the money, they don't give a shit about putting it up on 10%. TikTok, okay? They're just busy doing their thing. But you're right. I see, I see stuff on TikTok now. I'm amazed at how much money and everything is so, like the houses are over the top. And, you know, you see like Rush and the girls are decked and the dances are choreographed. And there's sets and props. I don't know what goes on. Yeah, no, 100%. Right. Right. I, one funny story, and I won't name any names but I remember on my initiation night or the night before all like kind of the freshman like they put us up in like a room so you can kind of get to know each other before you get
Starting point is 00:20:12 initiated the night and they had all of us go around and kind of give like your why like why did you join a sorority like where are you from kind of thing and one of the girls was like bursting into tears because she's from like a really small town in Missouri and to afford her sorority dues she had to sell her cattle that she'd raised like showing her cattle and she's like bawling crunch she's like but it's so worth it like look at all the people I've met like but like my cows like I had to sit like
Starting point is 00:20:40 my parents couldn't afford this but like she had to sell her like prize winning cows to be a part of it and I like broke my heart and I remember it to this day in the heat of battle your squad relies on Don't let them down. Starting point is 00:24:31 But my goal here is for you to listen and feel a little better about the future. Listen and subscribe to Here We Go Again with Cal Penn on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, Danielle. So tell us where you went to school. Tell us what sorority you were in. Okay, so I went to school in Northern California at University of the Pacific. It was super small, like 4,500 people in Northern California. Yeah, and what sorority were you in?
Starting point is 00:25:07 I was a Delta Gamma. Do you guys have date parties? We had lots of date parties. I call them, we call the mixers and matches. I guess they call them date parties. I don't really know if we had a name. They were just called parties where we got drunk. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:20 But were there any specifically where you like had to bring a date? Or you were invited by a date. So I guess there were date parties you were invited by a date. do. Okay. So any themes that you remember, any ones that were like particularly fun or particularly shitty? The number one party that we ever had was actually in Sports Illustrated on a regular basis for several years running. What? What do you mean? It was, well, so Sports Illustrated used to have, they used to rank the top parties in the country for colleges, which they would never do these days. But back in the 1940s, they ranked the parties.
Starting point is 00:25:56 So the parties were ranked and they were in Sports Illustrated and we were in the top 10 for three years probably running, a party that at our school, one of the fraternies. Okay, so do tell what made it so special that it got into Sports Illustrated besides I'm sure that you all were so beautiful. Okay, special is a really great word, but I would call it probably not at all okay these days. But the party was basically called Fireman's Fling and you had to go, the guys all. sat on a fire truck out in front of the fraternity and they watched the girls climb out of a window on a ladder and their butts were in the air with sayings on the back that weren't appropriate and then they guys held up numbers like a gymnastics competition oh okay and they rated you so one to ten obviously um you wanted a good number and your your underwear would say things like
Starting point is 00:26:56 I'm not sure if I can say what they say, but they say bad things about your date. Yeah. I know you have daughters. So I know that like you're, because like I have, I have a daughter, but she always thinks she's so cool and she's been through more than I have. And like I've never like, right? Like she's like, like I'm just, I've lived under a rock for 57 years. Right.
Starting point is 00:27:16 And it's so funny. I hear this story and it reminds me of my own stories that were just like, and also, by the way, PS, that would not happen today. You are right. That would not happen today. Mm-mm. So, like, you wrote stuff on your ass that was about your date? About my date.
Starting point is 00:27:33 Right. It was about my ass. Basically, you'd write about, like, some sexual comments. Right. Okay, go on. My butt said my... Gets hot for Scott. Aw.
Starting point is 00:27:44 It's not cute. So sweet. We were super in love. We were super in love. Yeah. That's right. You know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:53 So, weird. We didn't stay together. but um you're saying hot for scott anymore the party was super degrading but we were so excited because it made sports illustrated wow that is exciting those were the days my friend and that of mine was huge listen honey i think your is still hot not that i've seen it or want to see it yes well my is still hot but my butt is better listen i love having you because i love you thank you for sharing i love you too okay all right take care bye Bye. In the heat of battle, your squad relies on you.

Starting point is 00:29:01 Hello, America's sweetheart Johnny Knoxville here. I want to tell you about my new true crime podcast, Crimeless, Hillbilly Heist, from Smartless Media, campside media, and big money players. It's a wild tale about a gang of high-functioning nitwits who somehow pulled off America. America's third largest cash heist. Kind of like Robin Hood except for the part where he steals from rich and gives to the poor.
Starting point is 00:29:28 I'm not that generous. It's a damn near inspiring true story for anyone out there who's ever shot for the moon, then just totally muffed up the landing. They stole $17 million and had not bought a ticket to help him escape. So we're saying like, oh God, what do we do? What do we do? That was dumb. People do not follow my exam. Follow my example
