Starting point is 00:02:04 This is the Ben and Ashley I, almost famous podcast with IHartRadio. Garrett is here talking about his wedding. Garrett, congratulations. Thank you. Hey, Garrett. So, I mean, this is wild. It just feels like, tell us about your story with Alex, your wife, who you've been with for about three days.
Starting point is 00:02:26 years now, right? Yeah, a little over three years or right around three years. Where does time go, is what I mean? What? Three years? I know. It flies by super fast. I was living in San Diego and I mean, just cut into it. She just sent me a DM and we met up. So it turned out that she lived like three miles down the road from where I was at. I was living with my brother and my sister-in-law and their little guy. And she lived down the street and I was like, let's meet up. So that's kind of how I went. DMs are a good way to meet people. That's a good way.
Starting point is 00:02:59 I like that move. You know, I was kind of skeptical about DMs, but then I had to creep on her. So I had because she was private. And I was like, she's hot. She's blonde. She looks like she's fit. You know what I mean? And so I freaking followed her.
Starting point is 00:03:14 And then she messaged me back and then the rest of history. It was relatively soon after you ended things with Becca and you and Becca ended things together. and was it your first date back out there? Yeah, it was. What are the odds? I know, I know. So it's pretty crazy that it's the first person after that. But I think I was just in the mindset that I knew what I wanted and what I was looking for.
Starting point is 00:03:43 And then she pretty much fit all of that. So it's been three years now that you two have been together. When did you really know that she was somebody that you could potentially see spending the rest of your life with? I would say she made a commitment. I moved back to Reno. I was following a lifelong dream and career up here. And she was down in San Diego still living a block from the beach.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And then she's like, you know, I want to make this happen. I'll do whatever it takes to make it work. So she moved up to Reno. She left living by the beach and committed herself to me and making the relationship work and then especially when I went through an academy up here she was there for me every single day made sure that you know I was taking care of everything was set because it's hard going through those academies it's a grind academy uh it was a fire academy oh okay yeah so it was a grind because yeah and it's hard on the relationship too because every day I wake up you know like five
Starting point is 00:04:49 in the morning get all my stuff ready for academy by the time I get home it's like seven o'clock a Then I got a study to like 10, 9, 10 o'clock, go to bed, wake up, do it again the next day. Yeah. We made it work. And then it was sometime in there, like thereafter, I was like, well, you know, like in our hardest time of the relationship and the most challenging, she was there for me. She never, you know, shied away from it or anything like that. And that's really when I could tell that I can spend the rest of my life with somebody like that. How soon was that, like, after you guys met, just her timeline purposes?
Starting point is 00:05:24 um that would have been that would have been right around the two year mark like year and a two year mark so she was all in she said hey uh i want to be his support system i know he'd do it for me this is this season he needs me i'm going to reno i'm leaving the beach uh it's tough yeah reno is tough as somebody is just people who fly into reno sometimes i like reno i think it's one of the best cities in the U.S. I think it's great. Yeah. I haven't explored it much beyond the airport. It's always just a stop on the way to Tahoe
Starting point is 00:06:00 for like Amy's like get-togethers. Our producer, Amy's. You don't see the best parts of Reno. Reno has a lot going on. It's a great city. And we got Tahoe in our backyard. Yeah. It's fantastic. Okay. So why did you decide to go to a fire academy? Are you
Starting point is 00:06:16 firefighter now? Yeah. You graduate? Okay. So why did you decide to do that in Reno and not maybe in Sandy? So I was looking at San Diego and there was just like different career opportunities. I applied to San Diego. I applied it all over. They call it like a shotgun application. So I pretty much did everywhere on the West Coast.
Starting point is 00:06:37 I did California, Oregon, Washington, obviously Nevada, Idaho, a lot of departments. And I just started testing like crazy to see which one I could get into. And then just being up in Reno, I had a friend that lived up here. and was like, yo, why don't you come up here? We got some people because getting into fire is one of the hardest things ever. It's almost like if you don't know somebody in it, it's like it can take a very long time to get in it. A lot of people will quit.
Starting point is 00:07:09 So the policing process was kind of heinous. But anyways, come up to Reno and my buddy was like, you could live with me, won't charge your rent because I know times are going to be tough. So I started working at an ambulance company. And then I got, I tested with a couple of departments around here. And then I finally got picked up by one. So the department that hired me is the academy I went through. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Yeah. So this is obviously you said a lifelong dream of yours. What about it made it a lifelong dream? Is it an interest in just helping people or is it, you know, has fire and like the mitigation of fire or something that's always intrigued you? Yeah, a little bit of everything. I've always enjoyed just helping people. but I think one of the biggest things is being a part of a team and playing like collegiate sports and stuff like that
Starting point is 00:08:00 and getting that feel for being a part of a team. It's almost like that same thing in the fire department where you're all trying to work together to accomplish a goal. You train together, you work out together, you eat together, you form like a special bond. And I was like, that's so sick that there's a career where you can have that same feeling as well as helping people and you're always improving or the thing is always like you can always be training and every
Starting point is 00:08:25 day is different. I love that. So you guys got married in Hawaii this month. Why Hawaii? What was the vibe like? She's always kind of wanted a little destination wedding. For me, I'm like, hey, I can get married anywhere. She's had a vision since she was a little girl kind of where she wanted to get married. Destination. She thought of Hawaii. We were on vacation there last year. And I have. an old teammate actually and a friend of mine who got married at the place that we got married at but in a different location and she's like oh my gosh that looks gorgeous so when we're in hawaii we're in maui we flew over to awahu to go check it out and immediately when we showed up to the venue we're just both stricken like oh my gosh the mountains the ocean just everything was there what we
Starting point is 00:09:13 both love was in one one venue one location it was nice perfect nice how many people We had just about 100 people there, a little over 100. That's a lot for a destination wedding. That's really nice. Yeah, that's got a bit. A foot washed up a shoe with some bones in it. They had no idea who it was. Most everything was burned up pretty good from the fire that not a whole lot was salvageable.
Starting point is 00:09:43 These are the coldest of cold cases, but everything is about to change. Every case that is a cold case that has DNA right now in a backlog will be identified in our lifetime. A small lab in Texas is cracking the code on DNA. Using new scientific tools, they're finding clues in evidence so tiny you might just miss it. He never thought he was going to get caught. And I just looked at my computer screen. I was just like, ah, gotcha. On America's Crime Lab, we'll learn about victims and survivors.
Starting point is 00:10:15 And you'll meet the team behind the scenes at Othrum. the Houston Lab that takes on the most hopeless cases to finally solve the unsolvable. Listen to America's Crime Lab on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. My name is Ed. Everyone say, hello, Ed. Hello, Ed.
Starting point is 00:10:35 I'm from a very rural background myself. My dad is a farmer, and my mom is a cousin, so, like, it's not... What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke, but that really was my reality nine years ago. I'd just normally do straight stand-up, but this is a bit different.
Starting point is 00:10:54 On stage stood a comedian with a story that no one expected to hear. Well, 22nd of July 2015, a 23-year-old man had killed his family. And then he came to my house. So what do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? A new podcast called Wisecrack, where stand-up comedy and murder takes center stage. Available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose between a maximum security prison
Starting point is 00:11:37 or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth? Unfortunately for Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced. He said, you are a number, a New York State number, and we own you. Shock incarceration, also known as boot camps, are short-term, highly regimented correctional programs that mimic military basic training. These programs aim to provide a shock of prison life, emphasizing strict discipline, physical training, hard labor, and rehabilitation programs. Mark had one chance to complete this program and had no idea of the hell awaiting
Starting point is 00:12:15 him the next six months. The first night was so overwhelming and you don't know who's next to you. And we didn't know what to expect in the morning. Nobody tells you anything. Listen to shock incarceration on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:12:31 The U.S. Open is here. And on my podcast, Good Game with Sarah Spain, I'm breaking down the players from rising stars to legends chasing history, the predictions will we see a first-time winner, and the pressure. Billy Jean King says pressure. is a privilege, you know. Plus, the stories
Starting point is 00:12:47 and events off the court, and of course the honey deuses, the signature cocktail of the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open has gotten to be a very fancy, wonderfully experiential sporting event. I mean, listen, the whole aim is to be accessible and inclusive
Starting point is 00:13:03 for all tennis fans, whether you play tennis or not. Tennis is full of compelling stories of late. Have you heard about Icon Venus Williams' recent wild card bids? Or the young Canadian, Victoria Mboko, making a name for herself. How about Naomi Osaka getting back to form? To hear this and more, listen to Good Good Game with Sarah Spain, an Iheart women's sports production in partnership with deep blue
Starting point is 00:13:24 sports and entertainment on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Were you nervous? Like, is this something, you've obviously been on national television. And what were the emotions like leading up to the wedding? You know, that's her dad asked me that too. You got to be anxious. And I'm like, no, I'm not anxious. You're nervous.
Starting point is 00:13:51 I'm like, I'm not nervous. I was like, I'm excited. We've been engaged for a year. I could have gotten married and done this a year ago when I popped the question to her. So it's just been a year. I'm more excited than anything because I knew that it was like a lot of our close friends and family there and that it was going to be one hell of a party. Like, it was so sick how we had, Alex got it all.
Starting point is 00:14:12 out. She loves live music. Her family is very musical. So she's like, we got to have a sax player there. Oh, I love that. Yes. Underrated instrument. It was so sick. I mean, the sax mixed in with the DJ. She put the whole playlist together. So it wasn't like any typical music at all. She's like, if you play one typical wedding song, like you're fired. I don't care. I'll kick your ass. Alex and I would get along so well. Yes, absolutely. Okay. So, um, she was a Bachelor fan, obviously beforehand since she slid into your DMs. Did she give up the show once you guys got together? Or is it weird? Does she still like it? What's her relationship to the Bachelor now? She doesn't really watch the show. If she does watch it, maybe she doesn't secret. I don't know. But no, I don't think she watches the show anymore.
Starting point is 00:15:05 she wasn't like a heavy viewer of it in the past she just kind of like watched it she didn't watch like every episode but she'd watch it here and there with their friends so yeah now obviously she she saw something in you from the show that she said hey i'm going to message this guy has she told you yet like what made her say out of all the guys that come through the show out of all the seasons that she's watched this is the dude i want to DM um not really she was just is she was just is she said that it kind of happened on a whim with her friends where it was like who is people that were on the show that would be like a good dude um that might be in the area and that's kind of how
Starting point is 00:15:47 came across me and then she said when she was watching the season that um i was her favorite on the season but anyways but she just said it was she liked that i was outdoorsy and i wasn't like trying to seek fame or anything like that. So it was kind of more attractive to her. What's weird about being part of Bachelor Nation is that when you do break up, you have to kind of see your ex continue to do life via the media. How has it been watching Becca get engaged, go on Paradise, have a baby?
Starting point is 00:16:26 I mean, it's totally fine with me. Life goes on. life moves and for me it's like when something's done it's done and i i make that set in my mind and my heart and when it's like that like there's no going back for me so when we broke up and there was there was no chance of that reconnecting it's like life goes on we just want what's best for each other at least i want what's best for her so you know whatever she did to get to where she's at now i'm happy for and excited as long as she's happy and living life the way she wants to so to me it has no bother no worry anything like that other than just hopefully you know she's living
Starting point is 00:17:04 the life that she wants yeah it is uh it is wild though um from you know for me personally sometimes maybe earlier on um to see this person that you're known to be with from the show live life and they're everywhere you can't escape it um it's like a constant reminder of of the show really uh it was to me so that's the best perspective Garrett to just be you know, you both moved on. Now you're both doing your thing, and it sounds like you both are working through life in the most beautiful way. And one of those ways, as you've mentioned, you're in Reno, live in Reno as a fireman. Are you guys going to stay in Reno? Is that, like, you think that's the spot now forever? I never say anything's forever, but it's our spot
Starting point is 00:17:52 for a while, for sure, because getting going in the career and everything like that, what's nice with this job, though, is that it does give you a little bit of flexibility in the option to possibly live elsewhere and then commute in. But I don't foresee that happening anytime soon. Did you have any Bachelor alum at your wedding? I forgot to ask that earlier. No Bachelor alum at the wedding. All right. Well, thank you so much for joining us, Garrett. It's been really good to catch up with you. Is there anything else on the docket right now for you and Alex? How? kids
Starting point is 00:18:28 no just thinking about the future so hopefully we'll get a house here I don't know when with how the market is and just life in general so we're just coming back from being on the wedding doing a little honeymoon action now it's just getting ready for the holidays paying off that wedding that we just yeah yeah you enjoy the slowness and the bliss that is yeah the first year yeah for sure so but kids in the future for sure I mean we We're pumped for you. Congratulations once again. You guys are a beautiful couple and we're wishing the best. Thanks, you guys. I appreciate you having me on here and it's good to see you both.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Good to see you too. Bye, Garrett. Bye, bye, you guys. Weddings are all throughout Bachelor Nation right now. And here at the Almost Famous Podcast, we are covering them all from Chris and Lauren to Garrett and Alex to Kenny and Mari. Obviously, we had Sarah Heron on just a few short weeks ago. there's just so many weddings. We need to get tea on. We're going to get tea on. She's busy right now.
Starting point is 00:19:33 We're going to get tea on. It's just been a beautiful season of love and laughter and life for Bachelor Nation. We could not be more excited to be talking about it. But until next time, I've been Ben. I've been Ashley. See ya. Follow the Ben and Ashley I, almost famous podcasts on IHeartRadio or subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts. Starting point is 00:21:25 The answer is Ken Jennings' appearance on The Puzzler with A.J. Jacobs. The question is, what is the most entertaining listening experience in podcast land? Jeopardy-truthers believe in... I guess they would be Kenspiracy theorists. That's right. They give you the answers and you still blew it. The Puzzler.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Listen on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is an IHeart podcast.
