All right. Hi, guys. Welcome back to the most dramatic dance floor ever. It's your host, Trista and Deanna. And I, for one, was so happy. Like, my cheeks were hurting at the end of the show. Like, so many smiles last night. such a great start with not only the first episode that we already recapped with the guys performing,

but now adding the girls to the mix. It was so good. What did you think? It was so hot. I've never wanted like abs in my entire life. But now that you have me watching this show, Trista, I woke up this morning and I was like, I'm going to start working out. I'm going to work out. I'm going to wear crop tops. I'm going to just like be as hot as I can ever. It's like they were so. There is just something. beautiful about women anyway. And I know I said this in our last podcast. Just the way their bodies move, right? They're just as big as like my man, Tyler, but just the elegance in the women's body, the way they move on the dance floor. Like, I loved it. I totally agree. And I feel like it got started

with a bang. We had Tatiana Ali and Jan Robnick. They danced to knock on wood. Of course, Tatiana is like family kind of already because she was Alfonso's sister on Fresh Prince years and years and years ago. I loved that show. I mean, right? That's another song that I could sing from top to bottom because I know every word. I will say, yes, it got off with a bang, but I feel like the bang was unfortunate. Not like a big bang, right? It was just like when you, the toy gun when you shoot it.

the little flag comes out and it's like bang. Yeah. Unfortunately, like you could tell. Could you tell as a non-dancer that she messed up? Okay. So I hope I don't embarrass myself here. I, like, loved it. I thought she was good.

But I could, as a non-dancer, I could see, especially in comparison to some of the others who are really, really great. I'm like, oh, okay, she's not that. You know what I mean? But I don't know. She was, I didn't. see the stumbles until they later did the replay. But I don't know what I'm looking for. Right. Well, that's what I mean. That's why I asked you because as a dancer, I could tell.

That's not always the case because it depends on the person, but you could see it in her face. You know, like when she messed up, she was trying to catch up. It's like they were trying to talk through ESP trying to get back on track with wherever they fell short or wherever she lost. And it's so freaking hard, you guys. You are like, I saw an interview with Mara Higgins about last night. And she was talking about how she's totally fine with cameras, right? Most of these people are fine with cameras in their faces. But when it comes to this show, the difference is a live audience with all.

of these eyeballs digging into you. And the cameras don't even freaking matter. It's all the people just staring and judging. At least that's how I felt, you know, like, and I'm sure the first night, and we had a couple of these stumble moments from multiple people last night. And Tatiana, unfortunately, was one of them. She ended up getting all fours, which was almost the lowest from the guys, from comparing to the guys night. So I felt so bad for her. And also so bad that, you know, we were talking about music choices.

She chose knock on wood because she said she was sitting on the trampoline, like hanging out the trampoline with her kids, and that just seemed like the most fun song. It wasn't very fitting. It wasn't very fitting. And it's a jive. And that's a really hard dance to start with.

So, you know, had she known or had she had the ability, to talk to one of the pros and say, which song should I choose? Like maybe she would have taken their advice, but they just didn't have that luxury. So the next to perform was Amber and Pasha, and she is the figure skater who I didn't know.

You know, for the Olympic athletes, it's harder for me to pinpoint them unless they're like, I don't know, who's Tara and, oh my gosh, what's his name from Traders? freaking love both of them. Johnny. Oh, yeah. Yeah, but he's a big, like, over-the-top personality.

Personality. You know, like Nancy Kerrigan, like everybody knows that because of everything that happened. You know what I mean? Those major names. Yes. So Amber and Pasha, and I mentioned on the first episode with the guys that this guy, Bobby Bones, you know, predicts the winners. And I think she was also one of the ones that he predicted.

Now, I think that a hard thing about figure skaters is their feet are in skates. So they are used to not having to do anything with their feet. As a dancer, you want pointed toes. You want, you know, the line that continues from your leg onto your toes. And I think that as a, like, if I was in the mindset of the judges, that's what I would be looking for. And I was looking at that last night. and they're going to get down to that nitty gritty later. I thought she did an amazing job.

She is a great dancer. But also, I felt like she should land somewhere. And she ended up landing in this place. But she should land high, but maybe not the highest. What did you think? Well, I also like, listen, I'm not here to critique dancing because that's outside of my skill set. But I did feel like she danced like she had skates on. Like when she did her little flip at the end, I was like, oh, she could.

have absolutely been on ice. Totally. And that's coming from someone who knows absolutely nothing. You know what I mean. I thought she did great. I thought she has a really wonderful personality. Like I thought her personality really showed at the end when they were giving her her critiques. And when she did her interview, like she has a great personality. I think the chemistry between the two of them is pretty good. So I look forward to seeing more from her from the two of them, you know, as the season goes on, I think. that she has great potential to do really well. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. So she got an 18 and Tatiana got a 12. So moving on Sierra. Sierra, is it Sierra? I think it's Sierra. Sierra, thank you. So I didn't watch the show that she was on, but I do remember seeing some of that drama play out on social media,

just like with the stuff that she had gone through on her various shows. And so I actually, as a viewer, Trista, loved that they allowed her to talk about that and get emotional about that, it immediately created a connection for me as a viewer. I immediately want her to do well. I want her to succeed and to come out on top and look like look how far I've come. That was it for me. Yeah, I love that. I think that is very purposeful. Yeah. And I think she did really great. I thought her dance was really beautiful. The critiques from the judges, I thought they were all really fair. I was surprised. Yeah. She did. She was another one that kind of lost her train of thought and lost her way in the routine.

I have to say, like, yes, I love the connection. I love hearing people's personal stories. I love it when they're vulnerable. All of those things, for sure. I am right there with you. I just don't know that she's going to last that long. That would be, it was my first thought was, will people vote for her? I think that she stands a good chance and we will see significant improvement from her as like a contestant on the show.

But I'm not sure that she'll have the backing that some of these other larger names will have. Like that's why I was asking you on our last podcast about the voting and the scores and how they actually stay. because it almost feels like, I don't know, a disservice if you're not, you know, Jenna Dwan, right? Are you going to? Yeah.

Everyone knows her. She's been around from step up. Was that the, you know what I mean? Yeah, that's it. Uh-huh. And she's really good. And she's really good. You know how I said yesterday, how I voted, I didn't get into it, ended up not getting

into it, but I voted for someone who I didn't think needed the votes because I want them to stay around. I think that you're dead on, that she's not necessarily going to get those votes because people are going to vote for the people who have an amazing performance or a performance that really made them feel something. And at least I assume, unless they're just huge fans, you know. And I just don't know that I feel like she's going to not get all of those votes just because of the dance. Yeah. Well, she still did fine. I mean, she got a score of a 15 out of 30.

So I thought it was really, really great. I thought she did really great. I love the little bits of her emotional pieces. You know what I mean? Like circling back to that. Yeah. I thought she pulled at heartstrings. And for me, that's solid television.

Totally. I want to move on to one of my most favorite people in the entire world. Trista, you know that I love to cook. I know. I love to cook. When I go for work, the first thing that I do is put on the food network. watch cooking channels. My favorite show is chopped. Like if I could give my left arm

to be on chopped or like meet Bobby Flee, I would like spend the night at his house. So I was super excited about Giotta Day, I might butcher her name, Giotta de Laurentis and Alan Bernston. Uh-huh. Okay. I was so excited. I was so excited. And when they're doing their dance and she does a little

stirring in a bowl thing, I'm like, oh, that was cute. Pasta. I mean. But that's just because I love her. I would not say she scored really well, Trista. She got a 16 out of 30. For me, the dance was a little flat.

But again, I love her. She's someone that I would just vote for because I have watched her on the cooking channel my entire life. I literally would make some of her recipes. So she's someone I would vote for just for this simple fact. But I thought the scoring was pretty generous. What do you think? I thought it was.

extremely generous. I didn't think that she should have gotten as high a score. I will say, as a 53-year-old, I think she's 56, she just putting yourself out there because she just had dropped her daughter at school at college. I am in the same space as her, and I feel that. And I've been asked if I would ever go back on the show before, if they gave me the opportunity to go back on the show on Dancing with the Stars. And gosh, I feel like I would, I was already, when I did the show, I had really bad back issues. I had bad herniated discs.

I ended up getting a lumbar fusion years later. But I feel like when you're in your 50s, 60s, I know we've had older on the show before, it's just hard to stay healthy in terms of your physical fitness. So I give it up to her for going on the show and powering through when it seemed like she was in pain a lot of the time. Yeah. She's another one, though, that pulled on my heartstrings because she did touch on the fact of her age and doing this. And she was so proud to show her daughter what can be done. So she's another one that I was like, oh, my God.

She's the best thing ever. I will absolutely vote for her and keep her on the show because like, look at what she's doing. Let's go, women. Like, let's go. Yes. You have to come to the last bookstore, though. Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. A panel of Eurovision participants. And we do a little Halloween sometimes. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging.

You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down with therapists Keer Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have more shorts, so you can't do flips.

You have on the dressy, so you can cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home. You have to get off her device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as your adults in their lives to miss out on. This has been our surviving middle school run. And the fact that she had Dolly Parton's song, 9 to 5, one of my all-time favorite songs. And everyone, obviously, is just, you know, grieving the loss of the icon that is Dolly Parton. So the fact that she had Dolly's song. And you know, what's interesting about this show is it's about dance. But I don't think it's all about dance. It's also performing and actually acting. You have to act so much in these numbers. I remember being on the show and Louis was talking about the rumba and how it was like this sexual connection. And I'm like, I've been married for two years and you're not my husband.

I wouldn't actually consider him sexy either. But listen, I'm not the actress in the room. I struggled with that when I was on the Bachelor Road. Like they were like, look at this guy. And I'm like, he's not, he's not the one. He's not the one. I can't fake it. He's not the one. So I feel like because she's a movie star, she's going to have a leg up in this competition because she can act on the floor. And I felt like Ezra did a great job of incorporating little moments where she could kind

of put on her acting face and act for the rest of us. So I thought it was an amazing, amazing performance. I thought it was great. I mean, well, she scored an 18 out of 30 and like, I'm here for it. Like she even talks about that first movie. Everyone thinks she can dance because she trained for that first movie. Right. Be yourself, girl, you did great in that first movie.

I like remember that from my childhood. Like I remember, that's how I know her and I love her. So, oh, we're here for it, Julia. Yes. And I love their partnership. I know. I know. They're so great.

They're so great. But in terms of partnerships, Mara and Mark, like the fact that they have done a show together before, oh my gosh, is just magic. Even if they weren't on the same page on traders, they are magic. and I think the reason that she did so well, she has admitted that she has never danced a day in her life, right? Besides, I'm sure, like, you know, just kind of moving on a dance. I tink, I think she pretty good.

She says that. I love it. I think she will go far. I love her and I love this partnership. I think because she can trust completely in Mark after all of they've been through, after all they've been through. and the fact that he really is truly a legend in ballroom dancing and has a legendary family in ballroom dancing.

Like she feels completely willing to just give it all to him and it showed. And also his choreography was genius. Like she was able to shine on that floor. And the judges saw it. And I think the rest of us saw it. She got a 21 out of 30. Outstanding.

Outstanding. of the night. Outstanding. She was my surprise, Trista. She was my surprise. I did not anticipate her to do that well. I think she's, right, the chemistry between the two of them. I'm here for it.

I love it. She's beautiful, all of the things. She was my surprise of the night. Totally. And honestly, the biggest surprise for me was because she was talking so much about how she had never danced before, like she did not have any ability. But that just goes to show. that it really is a significant thing as to who your pro is.

And if they can make you dance, if they can bring it out of you. And Mark Ballas did that, just that. Yeah. He's a gift to us all. He really is. Okay, so the next dancer was Sarah Jane and Haley Bills. And I know we were both very much looking forward to seeing this dance. And unfortunately, she just was another that really,

really fell flat. She messed up a bunch. She lost her way. Like, she wasn't hitting the music. They were out of sync a lot of the time. And I will say, though, they looked really hot. They looked so hot. They looked super hot. I mean, they are both beautiful. They're both beautiful. Gorgeous. Right? But Sarah Jane Nader is like stunning, stunning perfection, like their whole thing. But yeah, I'm with you. But I wouldn't say that I had high hopes for her anyway. You know what I mean? But God, they're hot. They're so hot. So hot.

So hot. So they ended up being, I believe, they had a 14 out of 30. So they were like second from the bottom, I believe. Oh, second. Right. Tatiana was the first. Yeah. So next comes our favorite girl.

I don't know if I could call her our favorite. You know what I mean? But I had this in my head after our last podcast episode, you guys telling me that like they bundle it up. They do the sandwich method, right? So the last one was going to be really good. And I expected Jenna DeWan and Val to do really well because, listen, dance is a part of her life. And he, just like Mark is like, I haven't watched the show, but I do know some of these pros from social media or seeing other clips on the news or just knowing them from Dancing with the Stars.

And like they're on another level, right? Val is on another level. But then you pair him with someone like Jenna who has a dance background. I expected greatness, Trista. Yeah. And they delivered. I was going to say, did they deliver for you? Someone who knows nothing about dance.

I mean, I have rhythm and I can keep a beat. But like, they, to me, they were the standout of the night for me. Totally. I mean, besides Mara, Mara did an amazing job. She did. And I feel like Jenna, please, like she is. pro level because she is a professional dancer. I don't care that she hasn't danced ballroom. She was perfection last night. And I feel like the fact that they gave her a lower score than Mara,

I mean, it's fine. I think they are honestly thinking we're going to be giving Jenna perfect scores. A lot of this season. It is in her future, Trista. Like I do not think that she is at any point going to be like, oh, well, little lady. Now, I hope because of her, her dance background and her history, I do hope that they are a little tough on her because I don't want to just see a gimmie. Like, if I'm really going to invest in this season and I'm going to watch it with you, I don't want to see a gimmie because she is good, right? She is good. She is not learning from scratch. So I do hope that they are just a little bit tough on her because she's almost dancing at another level. So I hear that. But I also,

really truly believe that in what Julian, I said it on the last episode, Julianne was asked like what her thoughts are on professional dancers like Jenna and Harry being on the show. And the name of the show is dancing with the stars, not dancing with the non-dancers. And so I'm like, why is it being held against her that she was a professional dancer? she is a beautiful dancer so why not give her the scores that are comparable you need to compare them on the same level do you know what I mean I do and I think you're right yes I think it's true she has like a leg up in this conversation but she also it's not her fault like she was asked to do the show and she's on the show and she's performing and she should get really really high scores she should

have probably gotten, if this was later in the season, she would have either gotten a perfect score or like one point off of a perfect score. Like that was a beautiful dance. Beautiful dance. And I know, you know, there are things that she can clean up, but she was performing. Their chemistry was amazing. The choreography was amazing. It was a really hard routine. So not only is she coming in with this dance experience, but she's being asked to do a higher level routine and still getting judged the same. So I don't think that's fair. I think if you're given a higher level challenge, then you should be judged accordingly. There's no shortcut for saving time, but saving money is simple. of course I think Mara did a fantastic job I think Jenna did a better job exactly and the scores did not reflect that that's what I mean like I feel like Mara did

amazing I when that routine finished I was like wow that was just incredible she did so well Jenna, yes, the expectation was that she was going to do amazing, like the best of the night. And I thought she did. And I didn't think the scores reflected that.

Now, what I said before is that the judges know that she's going to be getting perfect scores later on. She's going to be. Like, if she stays in the show and the people vote for her, then she's going to get perfect scores. That's not even a question. But I feel like they should have judged her more accordingly. It's okay. She didn't go home. The person that unfortunately did go home.

She was never going home. Heck no. Sarah Jane ended up being voted, voted out last night. I know that feeling. It sucks being the first one to leave because you're like, wait, we already started rehearsing the second dance. And I really want to do that. And I want to do more. No one wants to be a nice one.

No one wants to be a night oneer. No, it sucks. So I feel bad for her. I know that she wanted to stay. I do love that they did a same-sex partnership. I love that they gave Haley the opportunity to be a pro this season. They were so hot. And they were good television for this first episode.

And unfortunately, I'm sure we'll see her in the ballroom, like cheering them on in the rest of the season. But yeah. I wasn't shocked. I wasn't shocked. So I, you know what I mean. Listen, I know that I am new to dancing with stars, but like people like you, Trista, have been watching it from the very get-go. And I am really curious what the listeners think if they, you know, because I love this because

you have such a good opinion on what it is to be a dancer and you have experience on the show. And then you've got, then you got me, you know, I'm just the common, the common folk. You are still worthy. You are still worried the... I'm literally watching this show as a, like, a general viewer, which I think is kind of fun. But I'm really curious what the listeners think,

what their opinion is with me, with you, with the show, what are, you know, our critiques of the dancers. So anyway, I'm hoping that our listeners will call in.
