My bestselling book, The Big Short, tells the story of the buildup, and burst of the U.S. housing market back in 2008.
Starting point is 00:02:31 A decade ago, the Big Short was made into an Academy Award-winning movie. Now I'm bringing it to you for the first time as an audiobook narrated by yours truly. The Big Short story, what it means to bet against the market, and who really pays for an unchecked financial system, is as relevant today as it's ever been. Get the Big Short now at Pushkin.fm. slash audiobooks, or wherever audiobooks are sold. This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast with IHartRadio. Hey everybody, it's the almost famous podcast. I'm here today with Ashley, of course. And we're going to start out this last weekend.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I had the pleasure, really, of spending the whole weekend in Rhode Island, which is where Ashley lives. obviously some tragic events happened in Rhode Island with the shooting at Brown University while I was visiting there Ashley was away for the weekend but obviously it's her home and I want to give Ashley a moment to kind of speak to that or on that if you would like I mean it's just the worst thing ever and it feels so awful when it's particularly close to home it's unfathomable I just can't believe this is how often this is happening And it's very particularly scary right now because this guy hasn't been caught.
Starting point is 00:03:59 They had this one person in custody. They actually got the wrong guy. And we found out overnight that we still don't know who it is. And it's kind of freaky to, like, you know, send my kid to school. But obviously, I mean, like, I just thinking, praying for those people who have been affected, those two poor kids, a sophomore and a freshman, I'm just, I'm so, so sorry for their families, and I can't, I have no words for it.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Just, my heart is with them in the whole Brown community and Rhode Island. And there's really no, there's really no words. Ben, how was it to feel you were here, like half an hour away from it? Yeah, I mean, it was, it was obviously, I think the whole house, We had a whole house full of people.
Starting point is 00:04:54 It's most from the Northeast. It's shocking. And, you know, it doesn't, it hasn't been, I haven't been callous to it enough to where the stuff like this happens and you don't take a step back. And it's like very, it's very somber. It is very scary. I understand why you, you're feeling that it, you had effects so much time.
Starting point is 00:05:21 And I understand why even, you know, days later, you're sending your kid to school and it's in the back of your head. I feel like I think about it all the time when I send Dawson to school. It doesn't happen to have to happen near to you. That's too bad. That's not, you know. It's not how things should be. Recently. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:41 But for all of you people living in Rhode Island or have connections to Brown University or have been affected by this, we just want. want to say you are in our thoughts. And I know that sounds like a platitude. But really, it's the only thing I know how to do from a distance is to have you in the thoughts and to also just try to wrap our arms around those parents who are also now nervous and have been nervous to send their kids out into the public. We do have headlines for today. We want to break down the news going on in Batchanation. We obviously wanted to start with the news from Rhode Island because it does hit so close to home on this show. And we'll start with one that is, was expected, I believe, based on what happened a few months ago. Becca Tilly proposes to her fiance, Haley, in Japan, five months after her
Starting point is 00:06:48 fiance. First popped the question. So Becca always imagined that she would propose back to Haley at some point. When I saw her in October, I don't think she knew exactly wonder how she was going to do it, but she found the perfect time in place. They went to Japan. They often go to Japan. I believe that Haley is part Japanese. And she did it on Friday, December 12th. And the pictures are so stunning. She had a photographer planted. and this is gorgeous, so, so pretty. Now they both have their dynamo and rings and the caption said,
Starting point is 00:07:27 To Forever and Everywhere with you. She said yes. So cute. We're so happy for both of them. I like the proposal back in a situation like this specifically. In a girl and girl relationship, I do like it like this. And in the case of it being a guy proposing to a girl,
Starting point is 00:07:45 I would say that I kind of like it more. traditional but it's it's real i mean i i honestly believe for jesska and i like i was the one that was going to be proposing now i dragged it out so long because of covid that at some point she might have just done it um and just said are we going to do this thing or not and let me at least put in your hands i i think we just knew that becca was planning this um i i do think it was already reported or we had talked to beck and she had said that that was part of her plan so it doesn't come as like the shock or you know maybe the first time does but it doesn't take away the specialness of their commitment to each other speaking of commitments Ashley Jason Tardick goes
Starting point is 00:08:33 Instagram official with new girlfriend so his new girlfriend has been rumored for a couple of weeks now her name is Catherine Hurley and he posted her for the first time in honor of her 34th birthday They met through the charity organization that she runs for dogs. It's a non-profit rescue center. It's called Wags and Walks in Nashville. And his caption said, from the dogs you save every day to the people whose lives you change, you make everything around you more beautiful. Happy birthday, Catherine. And then he said somewhere, either in this or in the stories, that he said, my love.
Starting point is 00:09:13 So it's obviously serious. and this news came three days after they had sparked romance rumors and they were photographed together at the opening of Craigs in Nashville. She is amicably split from her ex-husband. That happened in April after they were married for five years and they have since finalized their divorce. Oh, he got his golden retriever mix from wags and walks. so now we understand how the two of them may have met
Starting point is 00:09:48 do we know how long the two of them have been dating no there's no info on that no i mean i guess i'm putting the timeline around when he got the dog which was he started talking about in july but i think he's had him for more than that amount of time On the podcast Health Stuff, we are tackling all the health questions that keep you up at night.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Yes, I'm Dr. Priyanka Wally, a double board certified physician. And I'm Hurricane Dabolu, a comedian and someone who once Googled, do I have scurvy at 3 a.m. On Health Stuff, we're talking about health in a different way. It's not only about what we can do to improve our health, but also what our health says about us and the way. we're living. Like our episode where we look at diabetes. In the United States, I mean, 50% of Americans are pre-diabetic. How preventable is type 2?
Starting point is 00:10:47 Extremely. Or our in-depth analysis of how incredible mangoes are. Oh, it's hard to explain to the rest of the world that you, like, your mangoes are fine because mangoes are incredible, but like, you don't even know. You don't know. You don't know. It's going to be a fun rest. So tune in.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Listen to Health Stuff on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know the shade is always Shadiest right here. Season 6 of the podcast Reasonably Shady with Jazele Bryan and Robin Dixon is here dropping every Monday. As two of the founding members of the Real Housewives Potomac were giving you all the laughs, drama, and reality news you can handle.
Starting point is 00:11:33 And you know we don't hold back. So come be reasonable. or Shady with us each and every Monday. I was going through a walk in my neighborhood. Out of the blue, I see this huge sign next to somebody's house. Okay. The sign says, my neighbor is a Karen. Oh, no way.
Starting point is 00:11:57 I died laughing. I'm like, I have to know. You are lying. Humongous, y'all. They had some time on their hands. Listen to reasonably shady from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Michael Lewis here.
Starting point is 00:12:19 My book The Big Short tells the story of the buildup and burst of the U.S. housing market back in 2008. It follows a few unlikely but lucky people who saw the real estate market for the black hole it would become and eventually made billions of dollars from that perception. It was like feeding the monster, said Eisman. We fed the monster until it blew up. The monster was exploding. Yet on the streets of Manhattan, there was no sign anything important had just happened. Now, 15 years after the Big Short's original release,
Starting point is 00:12:52 and a decade after it became an Academy Award-winning movie, I've recorded an audiobook edition for the very first time. The Big Short Story, what it means when people start betting against the market, and who really pays for an unchecked financial system, it is as relevant today as it's ever been, offering invaluable insight into the current economy and also today's politics. Get the big short now at pushkin.fm.
Starting point is 00:13:17 slash audiobooks, or wherever audiobooks are sold. Hi, I'm Danny Shapiro, host of the hit podcast Family Secrets. We were in the car, like a Rolling Stone came on, and he said, there's a line in there about your mother. And I said, what? What I would do if I didn't feel like I was being accepted is choose an identity that other people can't have. I knew something had happened to me in the middle of the night,
Starting point is 00:13:43 but I couldn't hold on to what had happened. These are just a few of the moving and important stories I'll be holding space for on my upcoming 13th season of Family Secrets. Whether you've been on this journey with me from season one or just joining the Family Secrets family, we're so happy to have you with us. I'll dive deep into the incredible power of secrets, the ones that shape our identities,
Starting point is 00:14:11 test our relationships, and ultimately reveal who we truly are. Listen to Family Secrets on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Robert Smith, and this is Jacob Goldstein, and we used to host a show called Planet Money. And now we're back Making this new podcast called Business History about the best ideas and people and businesses in history.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And some of the worst people, horrible ideas and destructive companies in the history of business. Having a genius idea without a need for it is nothing. It's like not having it at all. It's a very simple, elegant lesson. Make something people want. First episode, How Southwest Airlines Use Cheap Seats and Free Whiskey to Fight Its Way Into the Airline. business. The most Texas story ever. There's a lot of mavericks in that story. We're going to have mavericks on the show. We're going to have plenty of robber barons. So many robber barons. And you know
Starting point is 00:15:07 what? They're not all bad. And we'll talk about some of the classic great moments of famous business geniuses along with some of the darker moments that often get overlooked. Like Thomas Edison and the electric chair. Listen to business history on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Allie Fittatowski shares unexpected illness that sent her to the emergency room. Kevin was helping her cut her hair. And then apparently the haircut made me violently ill. She jokes on Instagram.
Starting point is 00:15:45 So it's a picture of her in a hospital bed. She goes, I went from totally fine to having severe lower abdominal cramping every 20 minutes. That's interesting. She was secretly pregnant. She was, what's that show called? I didn't know I was pregnant. I didn't know I was pregnant. You never heard of it, Ben?
Starting point is 00:16:03 It's a very entertaining show. Oh, my gosh. It's a whole bunch of women. It's like two or three stories every episode of women who don't know they're pregnant. And it's the story, like a reenactment of them going into labor and then like a baby popping out on the toilet. Whoa. It's fascinating every single time. I did another podcast about this.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And I had four women out and telling me about their stories about not knowing they were pregnant and delivering a baby. I just don't, I just cannot, I just don't understand. There's something wiggling and moving around in you. Even if you aren't like sick and if you're not having all those classic symptoms, the fact that you're not feeling kicks inside you is tremendously weird, especially for those and there were a number of them who had had children before. Anyway, Allie, back to Allie. She was after the cramping every 20 minutes.
Starting point is 00:16:58 And a few hours of that, a friend who's a doctor told me that I should be going to get checked out. And she said it was really getting quite painful. She said, I'm sure everything's fine. But, man, the only thing I compare this to is childbirth contractions. And these, it started to, like, bring me to my knees in tears. And then she finally said, she's okay. They gave her some morphine. They took the pain away, which was very.
Starting point is 00:17:28 needed had a cat scan and she has colitis which is inflammation of the intestines they're going to put me on an antibiotic and pain meds and let me go home be on a liquid diet got to see a gastrodologist and she's going to probably have to get a colonoscopy but like wow um she said that colitis and Crohn's disease runs in the family that's so interesting that it would just kind of pop on And it wouldn't be like weeks and weeks of leading up to this moment. I mean, it's shocking. I like that she started out with the haircut. I know.
Starting point is 00:18:06 I hesitate to even talk about this. Just know that the recent rumors of Jess Edwards and Spencer Conley, who met in Paradise, she's upset because of some of the comments being made about the fake news article. I don't want to talk about it because those fake news articles are. dumb and I'm tired of talking about them and just bring them more attention when we do. But just know that whatever you're seeing online, it's probably not true and you should go ask them directly for all of their new recent updates. Jade Roper reveals whether she and Tanner Tolbert are trying for another baby. Do you see my brow furrowed right now?
Starting point is 00:18:50 Yeah. Like, goodness. I don't believe this is accurate. she did ask she was asked on social media the other day during a Q&A whether or not they would have another story and she said forever trying to convince Tanner for more for one more sweet addition to these adorable faces but I'm not sure it's in the cards and that is what I am aware of and then she also went on to say the family's plans for raising animals on their land once they move into their new home which they're renovating right now and then she said chickens first and then i have a whole wish list goats sheet maybe a mini donkey alpaca ducks pony and a horse and then she also said that she would love to adopt a beehive for honeybees and build some bug hotels for native bees too this is jay doing her mother nature thing because she's mother nature I don't understand how they could ever come up with Oh, okay, the headline is actually
Starting point is 00:19:59 Reveals whether she and Tanner are trying for a new baby Not that they are trying for another baby Because they are not I would have been a little shocked She really, really, really wants another baby And I really, I want that for her, yeah But I know that I don't think that Tanner is bludging on it either I mean, it would be how many
Starting point is 00:20:21 I mean, do they have how many right now you said? Three. See, she was, you know, she miscarried, she miscarried the fourth. Yeah. So I know that that makes her feel even more so like there's another baby out there for her. Yeah. It just, I always think they have 12 kids because they started having kids so soon. Yeah, but not really.
Starting point is 00:20:40 They were married for a year. They got married. Yeah, they got. It just feels so long ago. They do what they want to do. Three kids. It's not crazy. Four kids.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Four kids is getting there. Yeah, they do have the house. for it. Caitlin from Joey's season, she officially has a master's in medical decimetry. She said, I get to design radiation treatment plans for cancer patients. Oh my gosh, that is so amazing. So I get an image and I map out the radiation, how it gets delivered, and how to spare normal tissues and important organs. Oh my gosh, that is so incredible. And Leah from Joey's season said all my besties beautiful and educated so proud of you this is so cool congratulations to katelyn who also revealed that she's accepted a job offer in austin texas i was like what is a master's in
Starting point is 00:21:33 medicine because usually you know you graduate from medical school with your you know it's you don't call it your master's in medicine but whatever this is sounds incredible so congratulations to Caitlin. Yeah, it's a, I mean, a massive deal. Have you heard of this before? Does symmetry? No, I was going to say it's such a big deal that she's doing something I've never heard of. Which isn't like that crazy. There's a lot of things I haven't heard of. But when you go to school for something I've never heard of, it's impressive. Yeah, so it's a specialized field in radiation oncology. These headlines this week feel very, like, positive. Yeah, they're very upbeat, which is great because we really needed after this horrible. awful weekend in the world.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Yeah. Goodness. Yeah. So it says that they help calculating radiation doses and designing how beams are shaped, angled, and weighted to effectively target tumors while sparing healthy tissue. That is so, that is a very important job. So thank you, Catherine. I like how you said that. You said it so well.
Starting point is 00:22:39 But like, it's impossible to give somebody a compliment when they do something like this because you're like, I don't even know what. to like say like you're so smart oh yeah like you're doing for going into this for all of humanity you're doing great it's the best way uh anyways that's the headlines we have for you this week we'll be back uh with more headlights coming your way stay tuned for more frankie friday's interviews headlines content here at the almost famous podcast but until next time i've been ben i've been actually see yeah follow the ben and ashley i almost famous podcast on i heart radio or or subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.
