This is the Ben and Ashley I, Almost Famous Podcast with IHartRadio.
It's the holiday time of year. It is snowing in Denver, Colorado, and we are here on the
Almost Famous Podcast, bringing in, yes, some of your favorite contestants ever to celebrate
big things in their life. And today we have Ivan Hall here. It's been a bit since you've been
on the podcast, Ivan. Welcome.
back. What's up? What's up? I appreciate you guys having me back. I was good to touch pace.
Since we've had you on, so much has happened that before we started recording, we said,
congratulations. And you said, thank you, but on what? So you have a lot of things going on.
We met on your engagement. But like, tell us, like, just where life's at right now.
Oh, life is just, you know, crazy. Really, since ever being off the show, it always was before.
I feel like every year something new and big happens for me in a good way.
So I just got a lot of business dealings.
I run a nonprofit now.
We got my, me and a couple of business partners also are in commercial real estate.
That's been very good.
All while I still, you know, continue all my regular day-to-day engineering job.
Oh, you do both things now?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I like to automate a lot of things.
So it's not as much time as one would really think.
but yeah, no, I got a lot of different responsibilities now.
And every year I just keep getting better and better.
And then, of course, the biggest news I got engaged, you know, this year.
So that's been super exciting as well.
We're going to talk about the engagement.
But obviously you just mentioned a bunch of things you're a part of.
Ivan, it is, you know, I hope for you that continues that you can say every year
it gets better and better.
I don't know if I could say that, you know, about my life necessarily.
I think there's been good years and bad years.
Oh, okay, okay.
Yeah, there's been good years and bad years.
But for you, you're saying, like, every year there's been something new and big,
and you've kind of been, it feels like building on the good.
So let's start with the organization that you started.
What is it?
Where did the passion come from?
Why to start?
Yeah, I actually didn't start it.
It's called the National Society of Black Engineers.
I was part of it in college at Texas Tech.
It was a great way for me to, you know, get exposed.
the companies, learn some things, mingle with other peers, you know. And then I kind of just
wanted to, you know, do something more in the Dallas-Fort Worth community. So for the last two
years, it's an elected position. It's all volunteer-based. I don't take any money for it. But
we, I ran for president. I've been the president in the last two years. We've grown like
doubled our amount of members that we have. I think we have a few hundred members in the Dallas
Fort Worth area now. We won the national chapter of the year last year.
because we are raising, you know, 10 times the amount of money they were raising before.
So, yeah, we're going to break a record with the amount of scholarship money we give out this year.
We do a lot of volunteer work in the community, mentorship of college students.
And then also we'll get like our professional engineering professionals in the area of certifications, all types of things.
So anywhere from like, you know, elementary school kids to, you know, executives at companies in the Dallas, Fort Worth area.
So that's been a good way for me to like balance, give a little bit back and just add some more
balance to my life. So what's in the mission is to kind of highlight, promote, encourage, educate?
Yeah, it's to increase the number of, you know, black engineers in general. That's why we
outreach to kids. And then also help, you know, engineers through their careers, managing them,
getting them, you know, appropriate guidance, just helping them in certain ways. And then also,
of course, there's always the networking aspect of all these things as well, which is a big part
of it. So pretty like holistic mission just to like help.
you know, minority engineers throughout their whole career life cycle, basically.
Fantastic.
So can you tell us a little bit about how you met your fiancé Taylor?
Yeah.
We recall it's sweethearts is the easiest way to put it.
Oh, my gosh.
So, yeah, it's pretty funny because, like, some people think it's like a newer relationship,
but I've known her over 10 years now.
So it's like she went to UT Austin.
I went to Texas Tech University.
I randomly enough met her while
I was at an engineering convention in Austin
and she was just out and about in Austin.
And that's how we originally met.
She's been the only girlfriend I've ever had in my life.
Went our separate ways when she went to med school
and I went out to Florida to work for a couple of companies
or a company out there.
And then kind of reconnected.
She's, I think Ashley, you'll like this.
She's an anesthesia resident here in Dallas.
Oh, no way. That's awesome.
Yeah, so she's, yes.
So once she got the job back here, we kind of, you know, reconnected.
She works in the area.
She's in year three or four residency, so we're almost done with that finally.
And yeah, so.
And she's from the Frisco area, which is like a northern Dallas suburb like myself.
So a lot of similarities there.
And, yeah, she's great.
So then when you, when she was kind of choosing where she was going to do a residency,
you were already in Dallas.
Did that, did you being there have a role in her going there?
Or was this just a random?
That's a good question.
I'll say, I'd say honestly, because we weren't really talking too much back then.
It was probably more so just because she's from the area.
Like she's from 30 minutes from the downtown Dallas area, all her family's here.
And that's kind of what brought me back here to is just my family, like being close to them,
helping them out with stuff.
So I'd say that was probably the biggest role.
But yeah, definitely reconnected.
I was a little bit after Paradise when she got her job here.
So reconnected.
I was definitely trying to stay single for a bit.
I kind of always in the back of mind also knew like when I first met her I was like this
she's great wife material but I did think and I don't know if this was wrong or right but I told
her I thought we met too soon back in the day because I thought she needed to do a little bit more
life and I knew I needed to as well so that's why we were always you know on and off back in the
day too as well so we found our way back to each other like we always have and it's been great
ever since oh that's so amazing I was going to ask I was like when you were on bachelor in paradise
in The Bachelorette, were you ever like,
eh, this doesn't work out, not a big deal.
Probably thinking about going back to Taylor anyway.
Well, to be honest, I mean, Taylor or, I don't know,
I always have a positive outlook on most of it.
Like, I don't, like, lose all hope as soon as it doesn't work out on the show.
I was just like, I'll find the right person eventually.
Yeah.
Yeah, so that line of thinking is always, yeah,
I always try to flip it in my head to be a positive real quick,
so I don't have to, like, deal with it as much I'll say.
Exactly.
always nice to have something like another
something in the back of your head, like
another plan. Yeah. Do you have that right now
Ashley? No.
I guess that did stop when I got married
though.
I love you while.
She's like yeah. I have good by ideas.
When you're single though, you always
like have that like roster be like
okay I can revisit this, I can revisit this.
That's so funny. That's funny you say
that because when I was single after
the show, after The Bachelor, there's
a big season of life for me where I was dating.
and I had somebody that was dating consistently,
and she was amazing.
But before I had met her,
I was like,
I'm out.
Like,
I think I'm single.
Like,
I don't have anybody wind up here.
I have no options.
I am done.
I gave it up my all.
Ivan,
tell us about how you proposed to her.
Obviously,
you said you guys were college sweetheart.
You know each other for 10 years.
You met and she came back to Dallas.
And then obviously the proposal was recently,
I don't know how recent,
actually.
Yeah. It wasn't too long. I mean, it was in March, but yeah. And yeah, the proposal was a, was a funny one there. You know, she had sent me a few rings that's like the style that she liked. So I pretty much knew what that was. And then one day when in the mall, like we kind of went into a place and I figured out what her size was, basically. But then I just had to let it sit for a little bit so I could surprise her actually. So on my proposal, the thing that I kind of kind of
caught headlines a little bit was the fact that she's been needing a new car like she's got a really
she had a really crappy like old Nissan Versa from college so I was like let me just go ahead
and combine both these expenses in one and just say effort and so yeah I proposed to her it was in
downtown Dallas on top of this like a kind of parking garage area which worked out perfectly had a
good backdrop and stuff and then right after the engagement uh or the proposal um I had my dad
and my brother drive up her new brand new Tesla, so which is exactly the job, dude, was splurgeon.
I hope my wife does not listen to this episode.
I really do.
I don't want her to hear this.
This is not something she needs to hear.
Yeah, through the big red bow on it too and then drove the Tesla up.
It was pretty cool.
And then, Susie was part of the, was my videographer for it as well, actually.
What made you call Susie Evans to do this?
Because she doesn't live in the area.
True. Yeah. So she actually, I've met her a couple times because she visited Dallas. I think she's friends with Sierra Jackson out here. And I don't know. There was time, they're like, I met her twice. And then I know she's into the videography stuff and I like her content. You know, her reels and tick stocks she makes. So I was like, oh, this would be great. And then she actually suggested my photographer for it too. So I was like, let's just all do it together. Then how about that? So she did the videography. And then her friend did the photography and it all worked out pretty perfectly.
really that's cool yeah that's great i i actually uh side note have just really started to dive into
susy's content um because ashley it told me it was such a great follow and i cackle like i am dying at
some of the stuff she puts out there she is hilarious uh yeah she's really good yeah she's definitely
shown her creative side for sure and i i knew she had that in her too she does great content i will
say yeah so then uh obviously you're engaged now uh she said yes
Have you guys started wedding planning?
We've done surprisingly little wedding planning.
I'll say that.
So, yeah, that's the biggest thing.
So, yeah, as a resident doctor, you don't even want to really know how many hours she's working per week.
But yeah, and honestly, for Taylor, the engagement is probably more important to her,
or is more important to her than the wedding.
I think she was happier with engagement over the potential wedding.
So we'll get the wedding done eventually.
I'm thinking it might have to be after her residency, though.
So we'll see how that goes.
But, I mean, the only thing we pretty much figured out is we want to do destination,
and that's where it stops because we don't have anything else figured out.
We have no clue where or anything else.
But we do think we want to do a destination wedding.
And it'll give us some time anyways to plan it.
So no need to stress out about it.
Yeah, I understand that.
She's just like, oh, I just want to know this is a forever thing, and now we can just relax.
Did you, you guys living together?
Yes, yes.
We've been living together for a little over a year, I think.
That's going all right.
Yeah, like, how's the dynamic because she's like literally working in like at least 16-hour shifts?
Yeah, yeah, she, oh, it's, well, yeah, she's gone a lot.
I'll say that.
She's definitely gone a lot.
She could barely take any vacation off or whatever else.
And then I work from home full time.
So I'm like, not that I'm locked in here, but like I am kind of like just trapped in here all day.
So I'm always looking for an excuse like after work to like, okay, let's go to dinner.
Let's go whatever, a lounge or something, right?
And then when she gets back, she's like, I've seen so many people today.
I just want to like do nothing, right?
So we got to like kind of figure out that I, that dynamic, probably a little better during the week at least.
But during the weekends, we definitely love to indulge and eat at, you know, some of the nicer restaurants here.
It's one of our main ways to connect.
So we got to mix it in.
Like she's thankfully off this week for Thanksgiving.
So this is a rarity.
So we'll just be doing a lot of hanging out, training the new puppy pretty much.
And that's it.
Yeah.
Badden, you want to talk to him about new puppy life?
Yeah, it almost, you know, Jessica and I almost ended our marriage about three months in
because we got a new puppy.
Oh, Lord.
It was hard.
Now it's beautiful.
Waylon's about two years old.
he was a good dog but that first couple weeks i had no clue just how wild it was um yeah you know
it is it's it's a grind so tell us what kind of dog what are you experiencing so far uh and has it
been fun yet yeah no yeah i just got a brand new 10 week old i can go get them i can do that
all right give me one second all right y'all
Hi, my name is Enya Umanzor.

A foot washed up a shoe with some bones in it.
They had no idea who it was.
Most everything was burned up pretty good from the fire that not a whole lot was salvageable.
These are the coldest of cold cases, but everything is about to change.
Every case that is a cold case that has DNA right now in a backlog will be identified in our lifetime.
A small lab in Texas is cracking the code on DNA, using new scientific tools,
they're finding clues in evidence so tiny, you might just miss it.
He never thought he was going to get caught, and I just looked at my computer screen.
I was just like, ah, gotcha.
On America's Crime Lab, we'll learn about victims and survivors,
and you'll meet the team behind the scenes at Othrum,
the Houston Lab that takes on the most hopeless cases,
to finally solve the unsolvable.
Listen to America's Crime Lab on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
or wherever you get your podcast.
My name is Ed.
Everyone say, hello, Ed.
I'm from a very rural background myself.
My dad is a farmer, and my mom is a cousin.
So, like, it's not like...
What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke,
but that really was my reality nine years ago.
I just normally do straight stand-up,
but this is a bit different.
On stage stood a comedian with a story that no one expected to hear.
Well, 22nd of July 2015, a 23-year-old man had killed his family.
And then he came to my house.
So what do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
A new podcast called Wisecrack, where stand-up comedy and murder takes center stage.
Available now.
Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app,
couple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose between a maximum security
prison or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth?
Unfortunately for Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced.
He said, you are a number, a New York state number, and we own you.
Shock incarceration, also known as boot camps, are short-term, highly regimented correctional
programs that mimic military basic training.
These programs aim to provide a shock of prison life, emphasizing strict discipline,
physical training, hard labor, and rehabilitation programs.
Mark had one chance to complete this program and had no idea of the hell awaiting him
the next six months.
The first night was so overwhelming and you don't know who's next to you.
And we didn't know what to expect in the morning.
Nobody tells you anything.
Listen to shock incarceration on the I-Hy-Hawks,
Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Whoa.
Oh my goodness.
That is a, that looks fake.
Is that an English bulldog?
He's the English bulldog.
He's about 17 pounds.
He's this like Merle color, they call it.
His coat is.
Which is like the most rare color little English bulldog.
So he's cool.
He's got like little blue eyes too.
I don't know if you can kind of chill, but yeah, they're pretty sick.
So he's been good.
He's very lazy.
You can tell he's kind of chill, really chill.
That's helpful.
When I told you to get the dog, I didn't know it was going to be the cutest dog I've ever seen.
Yeah.
I still need to post him actually.
I'm probably going to post him today.
Yeah.
He's a cool dude.
Those bull dogs are chill.
Yeah.
You don't have to worry about him running around.
You probably have to worry about him wanting to get out and walk.
Exactly.
Exactly.
But yeah, Taylor wanted like another, I don't even know what type of dog it was, but I could tell it had way too much energy.
And I was like, no, I can't do one of those.
Like, because I'm the one watching it most of the day.
So like I need something that's not going to do too much.
Yeah.
This is, so Ivan has brought his, for anybody listening, Ivan's brought his beautiful puppy onto the camera there.
What's the name?
We call him Roli.
Roli.
I mean, Roli is absolutely gorgeous English bulldog.
Just chilling, looking at the camera.
he has done nothing other.
I mean, the difference between
Roley and Waylon is incredible.
Waylon would have been, like,
my dog would have been kicking and barking.
Oh, I mean, Ashley's in heaven right now.
Oh, no.
See, Jared and I have been contemplating
a golden retriever or an English bulldog
and, oh, no.
Oh, you got to go English.
Oh, no.
I could actually probably handle that.
I don't know if I could turn to golden retriever.
Yeah, that's a lot more energy.
Well, take back everything I said about puppies being difficult
because it looks like Roley is going to be about as much fun
and as easy as can be.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, we're still doing the training, but I kind of made it up in my mind.
I was like, all right, these first three weeks are going to suck.
Yeah.
But he's actually doing better than I thought with, you know, the whole potty training.
So it's actually been decent so far.
Yeah.
It's, well, congratulations.
You do have a lot going on to life.
And obviously, you know, obviously.
the engagement kind of is the thing we're talking about because, you know, Bachelor
Nation is known for love and hoping to make connection.
Ivan, just a few more questions for you.
Do you think going on the show for you, Paradise and The Bachelorette?
Do you think it at all opened your eyes up to wanting to be with Taylor or do you think
it helped you grow as a person?
Just kind of walk us through what you've now learned looking back at that time in your life?
no yeah um it definitely may help me grow as a person um it made me i already thought it was pretty
introspective but you as you guys know spending hours and hours you know talking about how you feel
and you know what your plans are for the future it's like shoot you've become even more
introspective than you thought you already were so i that was uh that was good for me and you know
i've never done like i don't know therapy or anything else so like saying that's a bunch of
you know random producers i don't really know and then other guys that i don't really know um definitely
made it a little bit easier for me to open up, especially to my closer friends, I'll say.
I don't do that with everybody, but my closer friends, I'll be a little bit more open with
them because there's guys, like, friends I knew from, like, college, they're like,
dang, I never knew this about you. I'm like, yep. Yeah, so I think the show definitely helped
with that. Um, yeah, overall, man, I love my bachelor and bachelor experience, or Bachelor in Paradise
Bachelor experience overall. Like, it's been pretty much nothing, but just good times.
Really a bunch of friendships. I talked to my, my boy, Damar.
Noah, Thomas, every day.
We're in fantasy football.
We do a bunch of stuff.
So it's, yeah, nothing but good vibes from it.
You know, a lot of great opportunities, experiences, and stuff.
So I think, and then, yeah, I don't know how much I would have grown without the show, really,
just because it's exposed me to so many more things that I probably would have been exposed to
if I hadn't gone on it.
So, and I try to treat everything as a learning experience, too.
So I definitely think it's made me a better person and expedited my growth, actually.
in a couple different ways.
I feel that.
Did Taylor watch you on the show?
She watched Bachelorette.
She definitely watched that.
I don't think she watched that much of Bachelor.
Yeah, she didn't watch that much of Bachelor in Paradise, though.
I know she saw highlights of it and whatnot.
But yeah, it is, like, she loves watching reality TV,
Love Island, all that other stuff too.
But, yeah, Bachelor, Bachelorette, she doesn't really care to anymore.
She's got, like, the ick for it just because I was on it, kind of.
So she doesn't really.
Makes sense.
Yeah, like, well, like we've seen a couple episodes of this Paradise, but, yeah, some things still throw her off, which is kind of funny.
Yeah, maybe The Golden Bachelor?
We watched The First Episode.
I, uh, I don't keep, I watched Paradise a little bit more a couple times just because I still know a couple of guys out there.
Um, so it's, you know, kind of cool to check in to see what they got going on.
But, um, yeah.
It is interesting to me how many really smart people watch, like crave watching like Paradise and The Bachelor and Bachelorette because I think,
my my assumption is all day they're being smart and all day they're like dealing with really
serious stuff and then when they get home they're just like still human and they're just like
I just want to watch something that I don't have to think anything about like this is I just get to
watch yeah you're exactly right like she literally will come home she's like I want to turn my brain
off and it's whatever binge Love Island what real real housewives those Potomac and wherever else
they are Utah trust me I I hear
and see some of it now and I was like, ah, Lord, but.
Oh, I'm good.
It's wild.
Yeah, she definitely likes doing that because when it's, when she's around her and her
co-workers, I can't even understand what language they're speaking, honestly, sometimes.
Like, it's insane.
Yeah.
So, yeah.
Well, it's an incredible chapter of life for you, Ivan.
And it's great to see and hear the things that you're doing.
We hear really wish Taylor the best.
I mean, Ashley understands firsthand what it's like to go through residency.
based on her dad doing that
and it's a grind
we all are familiar with that
and we're hoping it finishes strong
and Ivan just a final question for you
is there anything that we didn't talk about here
anything next for you
anything you want to clear up
that is in your future
man who knows man
I just think about this year
it's like you know I started a whole new career
with the commercial real estate stuff
I got engaged
I gave her a car, like just so many random things.
I got a puppy, so I don't know what's next.
And one thing about myself is like, I just know I just want to keep growing every year
and keep exposing myself to a lot of things and figuring out what I want to do in life more
and more.
So I don't know what's next.
It could be the most random thing six months from now.
I guarantee it that's how my life tends to go.
Just the most random thing pops up.
If I see it as a good opportunity, I'm going to hop into that next.
But, you know, everything for the most part is really good.
you know, you still, everything, everything's great, but then, you know, there's always still the
life struggles. You just got to push through, but my thing is I'm just going to keep getting better
every year, somehow. So I just got to stick to that.
You're doing a great job. You seem very calm and tackling it all, too.
Yeah, I've been exposed to quite a bit in my life, so I just not much that could rattle me
anymore. It's kind of, it's kind of wild. I've realized it's, but yeah, yeah, so.
Just wait till Roli wakes up at 2 a.m. five consistent nights in a row, and we'll
see what can rattle you or not. Fair enough. I'll be pulling my hair out at that time. Yeah,
for sure. I guarantee you'll be frustrated. Hey, Ivan, great to catch up with you. Great to have you
here in the Almost Famous Podcast. Keep us updated. We'll be following along for, you know,
whenever the wedding is, get it, take your time, have fun with it. And again, congratulations to
Taylor for, you know, being three years into a really four-year, difficult stretch. Wishing the best,
man. Definitely. Definitely appreciate you all. If you guys are ever in Dallas, just let me know.
I'll set up a nice dinner or anything else.
Oh, that's so sweet.
I would take a Tesla.
You can come drive it.
Yeah.
I got to get myself when next.
Maybe that's the new thing I was going to say, like, was that partially a gift to you?
Yeah.
So I don't drive at all, really.
So not really, actually.
Like, I just Uber everywhere or walk everywhere.
So whenever we move out to the suburbs, I'll get a car for myself.
But for now, I don't really need to even use one.
I just got like a little grocery getter for myself.
That's a way.
That's a good way.
All right, Evan.
Have a great time.
Thank you, guys.
All right, you have a good one.
I'll see you.
