Starting point is 00:02:15 We have People Editor, People Magazine editor, Dory Jackson on the Zoom with us right now. And this is a special episode because recently we heard that Ryan Gosling was inspired by, the men of the bachelorette and he used what he gathered from watching the show to create the character of ken which he's now nominated for an oscar for so dory variety did the interview you guys did the write up on it all tell us like do you know whether ryan used specific guys or whether it's just like the bachelorette in general the bachelorette in general so i don't know specifically if he drew inspiration from particular guys which ones they were
Starting point is 00:03:00 but the proof is in the pudding when you watch this movie and you look back on it and you think about the Bachelor franchise you can just see it so bachelor coded the broie ways the guys are together the ways in which the guys are vying for Barbie's
Starting point is 00:03:16 attention it's so much like the Bachelor Bachelorette franchise and I don't know how I didn't see it the first time but when he said it I thought about it more and I was like wait Oh, my goodness, this is wild. Definitely a parody version of it, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Yeah. But this connection between The Bachelor and the Oscars is my new favorite Roman Empire at this moment. Okay, so how often do you follow, like, reality television in general? I watch more than I should probably, but I did something recently that said those who watch reality TV actually possess a higher level of intelligence. So I'm going to say I'm a genius if anybody else watch. because reality TV is a genius. Wow. Well, that, where did that come from? We needed the person who wrote that study
Starting point is 00:04:01 on our podcast next. Yeah, there was some scientific study that was done back in 2018 and it just resurfaced. Interesting. Well, so this is the thing about Ryan basing his character off of The Bachelorette.
Starting point is 00:04:18 She's like, we're dying to know whether or not he watches it regularly. Well, he said he does. Yeah? Yeah. He was saying he loves to Bachelor franchise. He's watching it in that interview. I need to know the names then.
Starting point is 00:04:32 You know what I mean? Like, it's like, okay, Ryan, if you're tied in on it, like, we need your opinions. Like, come on the podcast. I'm kidding. Maybe. I don't know. It's probably kind of weird because maybe he watched your guys his season at one point. You don't even know.
Starting point is 00:04:45 That's what I mean. Like, I'm dying to know whether he watched, well, specifically for Jared because Jared loves Ryan. I mean, and everybody respects and loves it. But, like, that would be so freaking cool. do you think that I don't know I don't know where I was going with that
Starting point is 00:05:02 the curiosity I have here is you know you've talked about how he watches the show how he used the show to to build into his character on the movie what I mean without reading the article
Starting point is 00:05:18 so let's pretend that that article has never been read because I'll be honest I haven't read the article so I have no idea that I am here to learn from you What negative and positive, like, characteristics do you think he could take from the characters on the show into his Barbie role? Oh, gosh. Well, in terms of the negative, I hate to think about that first, but the first thing I thought of is when the guys are kind of budding heads for attention with Barbie.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And we see that with Ryan's Ken and Simulis Kim. They were both budding heads for that attention early on and moving before. before they found, what did they find? Was it like mail something? Yeah. But you know what I'm talking about? If you saw it, they found that and then they all came together. And then it was that broie thing that we see that we love to see from the franchisemen.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Like the guys are all bonding. They're getting together. They're shooting jokes and all that. So I see those similarities there very much. You make a good point. Because what I think of when you're explaining that, I was like, you know, Has there ever been in Bachelor history a moment where, like, the Bachelorette has walked into the mansion and felt like she doesn't belong? Like, that actually, like, she's not welcome there.
Starting point is 00:06:35 These guys are having a good time on their own. The pool party's fine. Okay, when? They did happen with Claire season. I don't know if it was saying, like, everyone else is getting along. Nobody's paying attention to me. Nobody cares. And I feel like that's happened a couple times with The Bachelorette.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Like, I think guys can get into their own zones sometimes. I feel like Michelle did that too. She said the same thing. Trista Sutter actually was laughing about that when we were having drinks at the Golden Wedding. We were just hanging out and she was like, I remember walking in to the mansion and all these dudes are looking at me like, hey, what are you doing here? We're having a good time. Please take this guy on a date so the rest of us can hang out. We don't want to like sit in this room for too long because it's nice outside.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And she always, that's what she like first admired about Ryan was that he was kind of quiet, a writer, you know, here to read a lot. but he was always very excited to see her. And she didn't feel like all the guys are always excited to see her. So maybe this is kind of. The girls do not act like that. No, I never felt. I mean, there was a moment when I was The Bachelor in the Bahamas where I walked into the room and I was like,
Starting point is 00:07:40 I don't think I'm the one they want to see right now. Like, yeah, that was after a really bad date. Everybody was super sick after the swimming date. But that would be a terrible feeling. That would actually be a fear of mine as the lead on a show. Going into then Ryan's character in the Barbie movie, where you, and when I watch the movie, you feel for obviously Barbie because you're like, wait, all this is changing and she's now the kid on the outside looking in at the party she wasn't invited to wondering what happened.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Right. Well, luckily in Barbie's case, she never really liked Ken to begin with in the film. So I think that makes it a little bit easier, but there's still those parallels, though, for sure. So do you think that I thought that when we first saw this article I was like oh okay so he says Bachelorette but like he probably means
Starting point is 00:08:32 that he was his role model was one of the bachelors and I immediately thought role model Oh that's good Ben Higgins my role model I had an answer I had an answer
Starting point is 00:08:47 immediately on who would have been the bachelor that he would have had as his role model. Before I tell you, who I think it would have been, but apparently no, he was more inspired by the camaraderie between the guys and less of, like, the one solo. Who do you think, Dory, would be, like, the bachelor that he would have modeled it after?
Starting point is 00:09:11 I honestly don't know, because I just really see it as the contestants mostly. I didn't know about the lead in that aspect. I was kind of seeing, was like Jordan back in the day on, uh, what was it? Oh my gosh. Well, it's more like, did Jordan model himself after Ryan's character? Even though you're right, Jordan didn't come, well, kind of first, I guess, because I'm sure they
Starting point is 00:09:35 they were filming it. Yeah. Yeah. It reminded me of that, like, back in the day. That was the first person I thought of. With like the salt hair spray to make it like a little, yeah. No, Jordan Kimball would have been before his time. Like, he could have been the guy.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Yeah. You know, Dory, I think he cracked the coat. That was the guy. Yes. I was thinking about Sean from this past season because Sean and Jordan are very much similar characters. This is where I get confused, Ashley, because you claimed even with an interview with Sean, you're like, he isn't, you're not Ken. Like, but you get the Ken name, but you're not Kim, but now you're still associated with Ken. Did I ever really say that?
Starting point is 00:10:15 I was just trying to be nice, I'm sure. Okay, fair enough. My boyfriend's professor is way too friendly, and now I'm seriously suspicious. Oh, wait a minute, Sam. Maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit. Well, Dakota, it's back to school week on the OK Storytime podcast, so we'll find out soon. This person writes, my boyfriend has been hanging out with his young professor a lot. He doesn't think it's a problem, but I don't trust her.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Now, he's insisting we get to know each other, but I just want her gone. Now, hold up. Isn't that against school policy? That sounds totally inappropriate. Well, according to this person, this is her boyfriend's former professor and they're the same age. It's even more likely that they're cheating. He insists there's nothing between them. I mean, do you believe him?
Starting point is 00:10:59 Well, he's certainly trying to get this person to believe him because he now wants them both to meet. So, do we find out if this person's boyfriend really cheated with his professor or not? To hear the explosive finale, listen to the OK Storytime podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hi, my name is Enya Umanzor. And I'm Drew Phillips. Starting point is 00:11:50 This season, we're going even deeper into the world of music and entertainment with raw and honest conversations with some of your favorite Latin artists and celebrities. You didn't have to audition? No, I didn't audition. I haven't audition in, like, over 25 years. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:12:03 That's a real G-talk right there. Oh, yeah. We've got some of the biggest actors, musicians, content creators, and culture shifters sharing their real stories of failure and success. You were destined to be a start. We talk all about what's viral and trending with a little bit of chisement, a lot of laughs,
Starting point is 00:12:23 and those amazing vibras you've come to expect. And of course, we'll explore deeper topics dealing with identity, struggles, and all the issues affecting our Latin community. You feel like you get a little whitewash because you have to do the code switching? I won't say whitewash because at the end of the day, you know, I'm me. But the whole pretending and code, you know, it takes a toll on you.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Listen to the new season of Grasas has come again. as part of my culture podcast network on the iHeart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast hey sis what if i could promise you you never had to listen to a condescending finance bro tell you how to manage your money again welcome to brown ambition this is the hard part when you pay down those credit cards if you haven't gotten to the bottom of why you were racking up credit or turning to credit cards you may just recreate the same problem a year from now when you do feel like you are bleeding from these high interest rates. I would start shopping for a debt consolidation loan, starting with your local credit union, shopping around online, looking for some online lenders because
Starting point is 00:13:22 they tend to have fewer fees and be more affordable. Listen, I am not here to judge. It is so expensive in these streets. I 100% can see how in just a few months you can have this much credit card debt when it weighs on you. It's really easy to just like stick your head in the sand. It's nice and dark in the sand. Even if it's scary, it's not going to go away. just because you're avoiding it. And in fact, it may get even worse. For more judgment-free money advice, listen to Brown Ambition on the IHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:13:49 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. This is such an interesting thing. It's always fun, Dory, when people that we admire admit to watching the show, admit to leaning in. Like you said, maybe doing it for just to get their mind off of whatever craziness is going on. But in this article and in the notes here,
Starting point is 00:14:17 Ryan makes a comment that Ken was the hardest role he's ever had to play, right? Yeah. That's so interesting to me for so many reasons. But I want to get your take on why you think, with all the things that Ryan's done from movies where he's had to dance in, where movies he's had to be, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:38 emotionally, like really invested into, to then Ken is the hardest role. Why do you think that is? Well, Ken is a doll, so that's part of it. There's no real character there outside of just like this doll. Like, we didn't really know who Ken was until this film. So he had to kind of create this persona for Kim, Ken, and make it his own. And that, I think he found that in The Bachelor.
Starting point is 00:15:03 You know, a little bit of research. He found his way. And it works. And here we are. He's now best supporting actor. nominated Oscar. He could win. I don't think he will, but it would be really cool to be like, oh, yeah, he won because he inspired his role based off The Bachelor. Oh, so good. It's so interesting. It's Jordan and Sean on the beaches of paradise. We've cracked this code.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Yes. They should feel really honored. And I was kind of confused. You know, the team here at our podcast was very excited about you coming on and talking about this and talking about the article, but I was never, I never made sense to me on why this bachelor or bachelor at would be fitting for him to learn from. But with your explanation, it makes complete sense to me now because it is. It is a fraternity of guys kind of budding heads, competing for lack of a better term, trying to make a name for themselves, trying to show up so that they are recognized amongst the others and trying to come out ahead, which is exactly what this ends up being when you watch the Barbie movie and the role of kin. So it does make sense to me now. And
Starting point is 00:16:24 it's fascinating that this is where he went to to study. It's just very fascinating to me. I mean, there's lots to be studied from the franchise, honestly. So I just spoke at a college course. I think Ashley spoke of this course, too. That literally is a whole course. that studies behavior on the show, whatever season is airing, they watch it and they analyze why people are doing what they're doing and what's making them do that. It's a whole college course. I actually did make sense. Human behavior. Yeah, my senior year presentation for college for my communications class was based off of reality TV dating shows in particular. So there's lots to be studied with, you know, how people think and move in that space. And,
Starting point is 00:17:11 I think it really, really worked well for Ryan taking that inspiration from The Bachelor, putting this into Barbie, the whole Hembo culture. It's all in Jordan. Yeah. Just to put out there, I thought it was, I said last week, I was like, I think it's Brad Walmack if it was a lead. Because isn't Brad Walmack just like a walking Kendall? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Yeah. He's like, we haven't seen so much. We haven't seen much of him in the past, you know, decade. but like when he was the bachelor twice he was such a Ken or at least that's what I thought Ken was going to be you know Ryan definitely made it a little bit more like well of a Jordan nuanced and all over that yeah well all right the Barbie came to life it's a great movie obviously Ryan is up for their award for best supporting actor it's very exciting that this is coming full circle to them the Bachelor family and Bachelor Nation, it always feels like Dory to close out here. When The Bachelor seems like it's going away, it finds new breath in either, for example, the Golden or the season with Joey and then charity season that just finished. And then with Ryan Gosling publicly supporting that he watches the show, I know there's
Starting point is 00:18:32 people going, well, if Ryan does it, I can do it too. So it just keeps staying alive. No need to feel Shane. The Bachelor franchise is and always will be amazing. That's right. Dory, thanks for joining us. Awesome, awesome interview. Thanks for giving us some insights into why Ryan Gosling chose The Bachelorette to learn from, for his role for Ken, the most recent Bart movie. We really appreciate it. Of course.
