What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose between a maximum security
prison or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth?
Unfortunately from Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced.
He said, you are a number, a New York State number, and we own you.

Yes. Everyone thinks they'd never join a cult.
But it happens all the time to people just like you.
And people just like us.
I'm Lola Blanc and I'm Megan Elizabeth.
We're the host of Trust Me, a podcast about cults, manipulation, and the psychology of belief.
Each week we talk to fellow survivors, former believers, and experts to understand why people get pulled in and how they get out.

This is the Ben and Ashley I, almost famous podcast with IHartRadio.
So to take us down the path here, because I have a lot of curiosity towards the situation.
So I do believe that the show, The Bachelor and Bachelor got themselves into trouble, I have this theory.
I can't prove it, but I can say from my viewing experience, when Trista and Bob were on the show, the show not only,
was beautiful and people got along but some people weren't here for the right reasons but the show
started to get into this drama centered experience where every year the drama had to be one step
more one step more one step more and then you run out of it you're like literally where do you go
you can't make any more drama unless you do something on TV that's offensive and absolutely so
hard to watch that nobody wants to tune in so the golden bachelor kind of like cleans the slate again
And you say, hey, we're back at the beginning.
And I hope, you know, as the show continues, that drama doesn't become the thing that this thing's built on.
I hope not.
I hope not either.
But I feel like my prediction is that it will go back to like Bachelor or Bachelorette, regular Bachelor, Bachelorette, then Golden, Bachelor or Bachelorette, right?
Yeah.
And so regular Bachelor or Bachelorette, there will constantly be drama.
Yeah.
They just will.
Golden, I feel like it will be a more respectable show.
Maybe.
So, like, I feel like, so we thought, like, our generation was, we're going to be our only
viewers.
We honestly thought that the younger generation really wasn't going to view this, but so not true.
So, so many people from younger, from, you know, the, you know, 20s and 30s are watching
this.
And maybe, maybe, maybe they're learning something from this.
Yeah.
It doesn't have to be about trauma.
It could be about, like, being cohesive and being friendly and being supportive of each other
and how attractive that really is
and you don't need to be, you know,
knifing each other in the back.
You can be, like, hugging each other
and, like, same way to go.
So maybe it will change.
I love about that is that when we were the first season
when Trista was the bachelor's,
the first bachelor's, the first group of guys.
And I remember saying it.
Like, we were talking about it.
And we're like, guys, it doesn't matter.
I mean, she's gorgeous and we all adore her
and she's funny and witty and everything.
But she's going to like who she's going to like.
we can still be friends.
Right.
And we made a conscious choice.
That group of guys, and I'll never forget it.
I mean, we got some heat over it, but not publicly, more internally.
Yeah, because the producer's standpoint.
They're like, I mean, I remember I got pulled aside twice being like, you know,
we're done with the kumbai Astha.
And I remember thinking, well, then I just should, I'll go home.
I'll leave it.
I mean, if she doesn't want to give me a flower, she doesn't have to you.
And it was one of those things where it was like,
I kept sticking out.
She kept me a flower.
The daisy.
She kept me around.
You're getting a weed.
Point being, I got a flower.
I stuck around.
But I love these guys.
Like, we're still friends to this day.
Ryan walks in today, and I see him, and I'm overwhelmed.
Because he was my bunk mate.
Right?
So I'll never forget.
When Trista was first mad at me, she's like, I go on a date with everyone but Bob and I come back to the drunk fest.
But when I go on a date with, when I'm, when Bob's gone, I come back to read the Bible.
I'm like, I don't know what you're talking about.
I mean, these are my buddies.
But it should be told, like, we were genuinely friends and we still are to this day,
20 some years later.
And we kind of had this.
And that starts to the top.
I do believe it starts to the top.
You guys.
Trista made that happen.
When I walked into the house.
Yeah.
I was like, I can sense the, the supportiveness and the sisterhood.
We're upstairs.
It starts from the top, you're doing each other's makeup, we're curling hair.
Yes.
Like, we were really, but once again, I told you it's a lonely place to be in your 60s and 70s
trying to date.
So we came into a house of people that were just like us, which are hard to find out.
Like when you're out in the wild, they're not there.
I got to say, I think from a casting perspective, I do think this show really did itself
a favor.
Genius.
Because they picked wonderful people.
Isn't she amazing?
I know, I love her.
Everyone I've met is just amazing.
They did a great job.
And, you know, I kind of, I keep saying it.
Like, how in the world did I get picked?
Because there were 30,000 people that applied to this.
So I have absolutely no.
I did not know that.
30,000.
Wow.
So I don't even know how they even look through 30,000 applications.
Wait, 30,000 applied as the women?
Women.
Or did men also apply to be the bachelor?
Wow.
30,000 women.
Do you know, do you know what, how many people apply?
I have no idea.
No.
I couldn't even tell you.
I mean, probably 20, 30.
when I was the bachelor?
20 or 30, not 1,000.
Boss man Ben knows the numbers.
He does.
No, no more zeros on the end of that number.
No, that's it.
They said, let's find them.
If not, we're going out to L.A.
the night before and bringing up.
We'll find some on the streets.
You know, it is.
I hope the Golden Bachelor does this.
And I do believe the show is focused on this
is the love story behind it.
And the love story is so important
to me to talk to you about.
Yeah.
And if you don't mind,
I want to get a little vulnerable for a second
because one of the things that
it has been so beautiful for me.
And, you know, when I did this thing with Gary that won't be shown,
we went around to these public places and kind of cutting a fly.
Now I'm dying to see it, right?
Cutting a flag.
It's really fun.
I'm requesting this excerpt.
Yeah.
I hope it makes funny reels.
But we got to meet the public and their opinions of Gary and the season.
And the thing I kept hearing was, um, I will just say this.
I'll get in trouble for it.
I know it.
But there was a lady at one of the events we went to who stands up.
who stands up, she's probably in her 60s.
She goes, my husband died four years ago and I was lost and I've watched this season and
she starts bawling and she goes, I believe I can date again.
And so for me, I'm standing up there as like the fill in, I don't even know what I am,
like the moderator or host or whatever.
The Jesse.
Yeah, the fake Jesse.
The fake Jesse.
And I'm crying because I'm like, wait, this is what this show is so fun for me when I did it.
Like there were people actually, uh, personally touched by a story of a cast member.
The drama maybe wasn't the center and, um, maybe for some, it makes a more boring season.
For others, it brings in the emotions and the heart and you get to live vicariously through
these characters that you watch on TV.
Yes.
So you just mentioned that your husband had passed away three years ago, Joan.
Now you end up on this television show that you're dating in public.
Um, what's that like for you?
I mean, I don't even know how to ask a question around it more than just like what if somebody's listening and maybe in a similar position, like what went through your head to say yes, what met through your head to say I want to? And then once you're in it, what makes you say this is a good next step?
So it probably started out with the application process because like I can look around and see that there are lots of people who have had second chances at love, you know, in their later years.
And so that kind of gave me hope
But hope has to be backed up by action
You can't just have hope
Because hope doesn't get you anywhere
Because I came and applied to the show
Because I had gone out to dinner
With a good friend of mine
And we had sat at the bar
At a restaurant, local restaurant
That had, you know, mostly people our age
You know, in the 50s and 60s
And I looked around and I said to my friend
I go, everybody here is a couple
I go, look, there's not a single person
That's single.
And I said, and even if I saw somebody
that was single. Maybe I saw a good looking guy across the bar. I would assume that he's
probably married because everybody our age is married. So I realized at that moment, and this is like two
years after my husband's passing, and I was just kind of getting in the mood, like maybe,
like I got to get out there, like that your market and that wasn't good. I wasn't ready yet.
And two mark, and I'm two year mark. I'm like, I'm not getting any younger. Like, I need to get
out there. And I realize, like, it's not going to happen organically. I'm not just going to meet
somebody. I'm not going to be at a wedding and meet somebody. I'm not going to meet somebody at the
grocery store. I'm not going to meet somebody sitting.
at the bar at a restaurant, having dinner with my friend. It's not going to happen. So I need to take
action. And I came home and I sat down and I turned on The Bachelor because I'm a Bachelor watcher
and they had doing a casting call for the Golden Bachelor. It was like the universe was telling
me to do it. So I did it. And that was like my first like step. Like I had to do, I had to take
some action. And my action just happened to be a really freakishly large one. And I didn't think so at
the time. I was like, yeah, I'll fill this out. And like I didn't even, it was kind of a long
application. I was doing it my phone. I had already had two glasses of wine. Like, I'm not really
very good on my phone anyway. You can't do without drinking. Yeah, you're right. The wine probably
helped. And so I only filled out like half the application. And then I sent my photos like they
said to do it. And then all of a sudden I was getting calls. So it kind of unfolded in a weird
way. But really good for me because I don't think I would have taken the action if I hadn't like
just happened to sit down and see that one little commercial. So like my message to like the world of
people that are sitting around waiting for it to happen like in their later years it's not going
to you can't you don't expect it to happen organically you have to take action and once you do
good things will happen and like even if it's scary like somebody said some famous person said
you should do something that frightened you every day and this really frightened me but I did it
because it wasn't just going to happen like love wasn't going to come find me I had to go out and
put myself out there and like I still haven't found love
But now I'm not afraid to do it anymore.
I did it, like, on the national stage.
Broke the ice.
Like going to the local restaurant right now is, like, super easy.
Yeah.
You know, it's no big deal.
My name is Ed.
Everyone say, hello, Ed.
Hello, Ed.
I'm from a very rural background myself.
My dad is a farmer.
And my mom is a cousin.
So, like, it's not like...
What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke,
but that really was my reality nine years ago.
I'd just normally do straight stand-up,
but this is a bit different.
On stage stood a comedian
with a story that no one expected to hear.
The 22nd of July 2015,
a 23-year-old man had killed his family.
And then he came to my house.
So what do you get when a true crime producer
walks into a comedy club?
A new podcast called Wisecrack, where stand-up comedy and murder takes center stage.
Available now.
Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Have you ever wished for a change but weren't sure how to make it?
Maybe you felt stuck in a job, a place, or even a relationship.
I'm Emily Tish Sussman, and on she pivots, I dive into the inspiring pivots of women who have taken big leaps in their lives and careers.
I'm Gretchen Whitmer, Jody Sweeten,
Monica Patton, Elaine Welteroff.
I'm Jessica Voss.
And that's when I was like, I got to go.
I don't know how, but that kicked off the pivot of how to make the transition.
Learn how to get comfortable pivoting because your life is going to be full of them.
Every episode gets real about the why behind these changes
and gives you the inspiration and maybe the push to make your next pivot.
Listen to these women and more on She Pivots,
now on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast,
The U.S. Open is here, and on my podcast, Good Game with Sarah Spain, I'm breaking down the players from rising stars to legends chasing history, the predictions, well, we see a first time winner, and the pressure.
Billy Jean King says pressure is a privilege, you know.
Plus, the stories and events off the court, and of course the honey deuses, the signature cocktail of the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open has gotten to be a very fancy, wonderfully experiential sporting events.
I mean, listen, the whole aim is to be accessible and inclusive for all tennis fans, whether you play tennis or not.
Tennis is full of compelling stories of late.
Have you heard about Icon Venus Williams' recent wild card bids?
Or the young Canadian, Victoria Mboko, making a name for herself.
How about Naomi Osaka getting back to form?
To hear this and more, listen to Good Game with Sarah Spain, an IHeart women's sports production in partnership with deep blue sports and entertainment on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports.
Culture eats strategy for breakfast.
I would love for you to share your breakdown on pivoting.
We feel sometimes like we're leaving a part of us behind when we enter a new space, but we're just building.
On a recent episode of Culture Raises Us, I was joined by Valicia Butterfield, Media Founder, Political Strategist, and Tech Powerhouse for a powerful conversation on storytelling, impact, and the intersections of culture and leadership.
I am a free black woman who worked really hard to be able to say that.
I'd love for you to break down why it was so important for you to do C.
You can't win as something you didn't create.
From the Obama White House to Google to the Grammys,
Malicia's journey is a masterclass in shifting culture and using your voice to spark change.
A very fake, capital-driven environment and society will have a lot of people tell half-truths.
I'm telling you, I'm on the energy committee.
like if the energy is not right
we're not doing it
whatever that it is
listen to culture raises us
on the iHeart radio app
Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts
now you're a few months
removed from the filming of the show
you didn't find love on the show
this is a very drastic choice
to come on the golden show
what other ways are you now excited
to try to meet somebody
that maybe somebody listening could be like,
that's creative and cool,
and maybe I could try to do that also.
So I'm not a huge, well, I don't want to say I'm not a huge fan.
I tried the dating app, so I tried to go on Match.com,
right actually, before I came on the show,
before I got, I had filled out the application,
but I hadn't gotten contacted yet.
So I'm like, I, you know, I need to do something.
I need to take action.
And I was overwhelmed by the response.
And I think it was just because I was like the fresh face on the app,
and I had like...
That's the only reason, Joe.
That's the only reason is because you're new to the app.
Yeah, that's got really pretty.
Nobody thinks you're beautiful.
So I had like 200 responses and I felt really responsible that people wrote real messages to me
and I should read every single one of them and I should respond to them and I got through
like 40 the first night and then I woke up the next morning and there was like another 60 replacing
those and I still had like another 140 and like I'm not saying this in a bragging way because
I'm just saying it's overwhelming.
to do a dating website.
And so I'm not positive.
I want to go back on that.
Although I certainly believe that you get a lot of options that way.
I would rather meet somebody face to face.
And I wish there was a way to do that.
Like, I wish there was, like, you see speed dating or something.
And I don't think it even exists anymore.
I've never heard anybody doing it.
But like, I'd rather, like, meet somebody face to face.
What about DMs?
Do you ever fall into anyone's DMs?
Oh, my goodness.
I believe they call it sliding into the end.
Sorry, I haven't been single in 20 years.
So there you go.
Now, Joan, just before you say, I met my wife through sliding into her dance.
Hey!
So how do I vet the people that, so I've had a lot.
I don't know that you vet.
And I've had some.
Or you can do a background check.
I mean, you.
I think I would need to.
So I've had, okay, I'm going to say it because I'm sure this will get beeped out,
but I've had dick picks sent to me via.
No.
For the love.
No.
Many.
No, not many.
Several, though.
Yeah.
Wait.
And then I have.
Like, wait.
Can I, can I back?
I can I bet?
No, I don't need to see them.
I definitely don't need to see them.
On the OG podcast, now on the almost famous podcast, they might want to see them.
They don't want.
But this one, no, not this one.
What I need to know is do they automatically send them to you or is this after talking to like weeks?
So this is like, they'll say you're so beautiful.
I love you in the golden bachelor.
And I'll say, oh, thank you so much.
much. Thank you for watching.
Yeah.
And then like that spurs on a conversation.
Do you like younger men?
I'm like, no, not really.
Not my thing.
And then then it comes usually.
Well, then how do you like this?
Yeah.
I can't.
Like, I can't.
It's usually,
it's young guys normally.
I don't know.
They think that that's a,
my daughter is getting off of Instagram.
It's going to make me want that.
This is bad.
This is no,
this is so good.
No, this is actually what exactly.
No, it's a PSA.
It's a public service.
Exactly.
So like, okay.
Okay.
Okay.
And then let me tell you the other really disturbing thing
that happens.
Okay, yes, please.
Oh, my word.
Men contact me and want me, want to be my sugar daddy.
No.
And offer me many, many thousands of dollars a month or a week to just talk to them.
And they say no sexual stuff.
We're showing pictures of your feet.
Yeah.
Oh, oh.
Guys, I have feet.
Can we send?
I mean, come on.
So many people have feet.
I'd like to offer my number of those guys.
You can pretend you're me.
So here's the funny part of this is I'm meeting all these women tonight, all the golden
bachelor uh contestants and they're all telling me these stories of it's been wild that like their
social media is now blowing up and it's so crazy for them to manage and figure out like you know a lot
of them have never really been on social media before but now i mean they're in the world and people
have watched them and so their dms are blowing up their messages are blowing up like their social
media is now getting a bigger following.
And so there is a humor, like a comedic side of that, or it's like, this is hilarious
to think about.
But then also there's this like, what are you to do with this, Joan?
And you know what I, and I don't want to waste this opportunity.
So like, this is my one.
This is my one and only.
Here it is.
And I don't want to waste it.
And so I do look at all of those DMs.
And I want to do something that I want it to be safe.
So I do feel I do have a little bit of a fear.
factor that these strangers are contacting me and I don't want to, you know, I don't
want to actually meet somebody that would be not a safe thing. So I don't know how to vet the
people. So my biggest problem right now is vetting them. What I do get a lot of really,
really sweet things is girls who want me to date their fathers, which is really cute. So I think
that is probably the safest way I could go. Unfortunately, I haven't found. Unless there are girls
that are acting like, that are young men who are acting like young girls.
It's true.
You can't trust everybody.
So, but I do, unfortunately, I haven't had a lot that are local.
So I want to date somebody that, like, is like a feasibly, you know, like within a few
hour drive, I would say.
Like, they don't have to be like, you know, right next door.
But I want somebody's kind of close.
I haven't found a single one of those.
And I've gotten a lot of them, but none of them have been like even remotely close by.
Okay.
Well, anyone listening who's in Maryland, right?
He's in Maryland or D.C. Virginia.
Delaware would be fine.
I mean, come on.
If you have a beach house, it would be awesome.
Anything in these kids.
My name is Ed.
Everyone say, hello, Ed.

I don't write songs.
God write songs.
I take dictation.
I didn't even know you've been a pastor for over 10 years.
I think culture is any space that you live in that develops you.
On a recent episode of Culture Raises Us podcast,
I sat down with Warren Campbell, Grammy-winning producer, pastor, and music executive
to talk about the beats, the business, and the legacy behind some of the biggest names in gospel, R&B, and hip-hop.
This is like watching Michael Jackson talk about thoroughly before it happened.
Was there a particular moment where you realize just how instrumental music
culture was to shaping all of our global ecosystem.
I was eight years old, and the Motown 25 special came on.
And all the great Motown artists, Marvin, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Diana Ross.
From Mary Mary to Jennifer Hudson, we get into the soul of the music and the purpose that drives it.
Listen to Culture raises us on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your

to kind of close up here
this is obviously kind of getting back out there
but also have you been hit up for like sponsorships now
like Instagram deals crazy really so I did make an effort
I have to say so I came off the show really really early
and I had a fear that like my journey was completely over
and that made me really sad because I loved this journey
first of all I love being part of bachelor nation it's like a really like a fun group to be part of
And, you know, I even said in the limo that as you get older, you get kind of invisible.
And I finally felt like I was a little more visible.
And not because I was on national TV, but because I had found this group of friends that I really,
really loved.
And they were, I was kind of, I was on the outside now.
And I didn't want to be on the outside.
So I started being more active on social media.
And it did become a little crazy.
So I've had an insane amount of interest.
and not just from dating, but also from, because I've done a few TikToks, from brands.
And so I probably get five offers a day for different brands, yeah.
And good brands.
Do it all.
Do it all.
We're not allowed to yet.
To February.
And the February.
Trust me.
What's that?
Ask forgiveness not permission.
I say ask forgiveness, not permission.
Oh, guys, I could be doing 50 a day.
It's insane.
That's not okay.
We get crazy, crazy, crazy.
Like, I was on my laptop today.
I was working a little bit because I was in the hotel room.
And I had probably four or five come through just today.
Yeah.
I mean, it's crazy.
Well, you're getting way more than we are.
Yeah.
It's amazing.
I'm right with it.
Because I can tell you right now, I'd be like, ice cream and.
Sure.
Sandwiches, love it.
I got a wine one today.
I was like, yeah.
Gasoline?
Why not?
Glue?
Pure.
The human dog bed?
Have you seen the human dog bed?
I got the human dog bed.
The human dog bed.
It's the coolest thing you've ever seen.
I happened to live.
It was on Shark Tank and I got and I was like,
God, I so want to do one of this, but I can't do it.
It just covers you're all up at all at once.
It's a nice big dog bed.
It's like a big dog bed for a human.
It's the coolest thing.
Joan, here's the thing.
This is a blast for us and I want you to know that.
Like we are absolutely thrilled that you all are here.
Yes.
This is very exciting for any of us who have been on the other show
because this is a show that we all got.
very excited about and we are very excited about and we enjoyed like it didn't disappoint and all
of you that are here tonight are people at least from our opinion who have just like really entertained
us but also that we fall in love with that we've rooted for that we cheer for and that now we're
cheering for even more now that the show is done and this whole new chapter begins and so we're
very thankful that you came in gave us a time on the almost famous podcast you are absolutely
wonderful. Okay. To close this whole thing out, are you glad you did it? Oh, gosh. Yeah. You know,
I, I toyed with it a little bit when I was deciding whether I wanted to do it. When they
offered it to me, I had this daughter who was very pregnant and had a difficult pregnancy and
difficult birth. And I considered not coming. And now I look back and I go, what was I thinking?
Like, this was such a great privilege. It was such a privilege to be on to, first of all,
be part of Bachelor Nation, to have met Gary. He kind of opened up my heart a little
bit. I kind of, you know, feel like there's hope in the dating world for me and, like, hope
of finding love. And then I got to meet, like, these 21 other women that were like my, they're
like my tribe now. They're like my clan. And they give me energy and they give me hope and they
give me people to do this with. So, like, it's lonely doing this alone. You know, the world is
full of couples. You know, there's not a lot of single people, especially at my age. So it's so nice to
have, yeah, you have, so I have this tribe. And like, we're, you know, making plans to go on vacation
together and Nancy lives really close to me so I know I can like call Nancy at any time and say come
like meet me for dinner love we'll sit at the bar and hopefully somebody will walk up to us yes
you'll sit at the bar yeah yeah here's a PSA if if Nancy and Jonah are at a bar come hit on them
they would love it I mean you might fail do yourself a fit yeah just go at least say hey you're
really pretty good guy sit down and buy you drink I love them well we look forward to many more
Many more years to come.
Thanks for coming along
on the most famous podcast.
It's so worth it.
So thanks for sharing your love story
with all of us.
Thank you so much for me.
It means a lot.
I know it's not always easy,
but it's very exciting.
And somebody out there is listening.
I know it right now.
Who is going, I hear this,
and I believe it.
And now they're going to do something
beautiful for their life.
Yeah.
And if that's all that comes out of this,
if I never find love,
but somebody like goes out there
and, you know, other people do it,
like that's all worth it because like I I had my chance I raised my family I had the love of my life
I want to have it again it made me happy but everybody deserves that and if this like spurs somebody
on and that's the like that's all I need yeah that makes me happy yeah the lie yeah the stories that
will become that you'll never know from this yeah are absolutely beautiful well hey this has been
the almost famous podcast so everybody followed my lead here uh don't forget how to do this I'm
to go Joan first and I'm going to go around the circle.
We'll be back very soon with tons more content and incredible interviews with so many
people here at the Bachelor Mansion.

What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack,
where a comedian finds himself at the center of a chilling true crime story.
Does anyone know what shows?
they've come to see. It's a story. It's about the scariest night of my life. This is Wisecrack,
available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
podcasts. Everyone thinks they'd never join a cult. But it happens all the time to people just like you.
And people just like us. I'm Lola Blanc and I'm Megan Elizabeth. We're the hosts of Trust Me,
a podcast about cults, manipulation, and the psychology of belief. Each week we talk to
survivors, former believers, and experts to understand why people get pulled in and how they get out.
Trust me, new episodes every Wednesday on exactly right. Listen wherever you get your podcasts.
