Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. My boyfriend's professor is way too friendly, and now I'm seriously suspicious. Wait a minute, Sam. Maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit. Well, Dakota, luckily, it's back to school week on the OK Storytime podcast, so we'll find out soon. This person writes, my boyfriend's been hanging out with his young professor a lot. He doesn't think it's a problem, but I don't trust her. Now he's insisting we get to know each other, but I just want her gone.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Now, hold up. Isn't that against school policy? That seems inappropriate. Maybe find out how it ends by listening to the OK Storytime podcast and the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, my name is Enya Umanzor. And I'm Drew Phillips. And we run a podcast called Emergency Intercom. If you're a crime junkie and you love crimes, we're not the podcast for you.
Starting point is 00:00:50 But if you have unmedicated ADHD... Oh, my God, perfect. And want to hear people with mental illness, psychobabble. Yes, yes. Then Emergency Intercom is the podcast for you. Open your free IHeartRadio app. Search Emergency Intercom and listen now. What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose
Starting point is 00:01:10 between a maximum security prison or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth? Unfortunately for Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced. He said, you are a number, a New York State number, and we own you. Listen to shock incarceration on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I just normally do straight stand-up, but this is a bit different. What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
Starting point is 00:01:45 Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack, where a comedian finds himself at the center of a chilling true crime story. Does anyone know what show they've come to see? It's a story. It's about the scariest night of my life. This is Wisecrack. Available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Every case that is a cold case that has DNA. Right now in a backlog will be identified in our lifetime. On the new podcast, America's Crime Lab, every case has a story to tell. And the DNA holds the truth. He never thought he was going to get caught. And I just looked at my computer screen. I was just like, ah, gotcha. This technology is already solving so many cases.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Listen to America's Crime Lab on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is the Ben and Ashley I, Almost Famous Podcasts with IHartRadio. This is the Almost Famous Podcast. We are out here right now in San Francisco, California. What we're doing this weekend is something really exciting. We've brought some of our favorites from Bachelor's. People we know and people we don't know into. one little world, one little bubble to spend the weekend together. Why? Well, because we want to get
Starting point is 00:03:01 to know them better. We're also going to be playing golf. There will be a champion. Crown, the best golfer right now in Bachelor Nation. Wells Adams didn't show up, so I'm open to take that title. Dean, nowhere to be seen. They're scared. They're nervous. I'm here. I show up and I play. So we'll give you updates on the golf match. We'll also give you updates on the lives of those who you're most interested in in Bachelor Nation. It's going to be a great weekend. We can't wait to share it all with you here at the Almost Famous podcast. And today is one of my personally most anticipated conversations I've ever had. I'm with Daisy. Now, Daisy, we're going to start this podcast. I've thought about many ways to start this conversation. First off, hello. Hi. Nice to meet you
Starting point is 00:03:49 in person. It's nice to meet you in person. I just interviewed Jason Mesnick last week. Okay. And his wife, Molly. Yeah. And they said you went over to their house. Yeah. They were awesome.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And they said it was one of the best nights they've had in a long time. Was it fun for you? It was so fun. We had the best time. And they were both just, like, me and Charity and Kelsey were there. And they were all supportive. And their daughter, she's so cute. Big fan.
Starting point is 00:04:17 So it has to be cool to like see an alumni who is a daughter who's also a big fan of the show. Me and Kelsey were like, what? Yeah. Your parents are pretty sight. Like, they're legendary. Yeah. And they also said that your name represents your personality.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Aw. Was that on purpose, do you think, that Daisy was the name that your parents gave you? Honestly, my dad now, he's like, you're welcome for naming you and Daisy because of all the Daisy got his cheese step. Yeah. Good point. I haven't thought about that yet. You're like, I've made some money, dad. Thanks for the name.
Starting point is 00:04:51 My dad's like, you're welcome. But no, it was funny. When I was actually born, my parents had a deal that my dad would name all the girls and my mom would name all the boys they had. And like they always agreed on a name. And when I was born, my dad said she's Daisy. And I was like, no. And my dad's such a pushover when it comes to my mom.
Starting point is 00:05:12 And my mom was like, no, it's not Daisy. And then a week later, she was like, yeah, it's Daisy. She's a Daisy. It fits you so well. Now, it's not easy in today's world of The Bachelor to make. make a name for yourself. Yeah. And I think one of the only reasons for that is because the show's been around now for so long.
Starting point is 00:05:28 It has such a good track record. And you, I think, have kind of came out of not nowhere, but you've really, like, made a name for yourself in the midst of so many other people coming before you. Yeah. Like, what do you think's made you most relatable, like, with the audience? Because people love you, Daisy. Thank you. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:51 I think the thing, I just always really tried to be myself. And I think the time I was on this show, I was going through something really interesting. And I was still, like, learning how to hear. It was the first time of my life where I was genuinely, like, happy. And I hadn't been happy probably since I was, like, 17. And it was, it was just a really, like, four months before that, I had, like, a lot of, like, I got my cochlear implant and everything was changing. and it was a really life-changing time for me. And I remember talking to my parents and my siblings
Starting point is 00:06:24 before I went out on the show because they had seen me in really, really dark times. And they were like, are you my little brother? He was so sweet about it. He was like, I just don't, he was nervous about me doing it because he was like, I don't want anything to, like, affect you because you're so happy right now. And I think it was just such, like, a pivotal time in my life.
Starting point is 00:06:45 And so I think that's kind of why, too. Like, it was a huge change. for me and I also think I had like some of the producers I were with were amazing and they were really helping me like lean into like who I was and helping me like just really like be they were always trying to like help me like show who I was you know and it was I don't know it was just I have such a good relationship with everyone from the show and it was it was It was, yeah, it was just a life-changing thing for me. The relatability, I do think, and that joy that you exude.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Yeah. But just for clarity, because I've heard you say this before, that season of your life, you're in a really good place. Yeah. Were you in a really good place when you stepped out of the limo walking up to the mansion? Or did the show, like, help, like, kind of push you into an even better place? I was in a really good place before I stepped out of the limo. I was like, you know what? It was a thing where I was like, it's, when I was stepping out of the limo, I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:07:54 have done it if I knew that it could hurt me in a way. And I remember talking to my dad and my mom, and they were like, you know what? They were like, everything you've been through, I was like, yeah, I literally lost my hearing. And I was like, nothing can hurt me worse than that. That was my thought process. And I was there. And it was just such a good experience. I also hadn't made friends in a really long time besides the people that
Starting point is 00:08:18 I knew, because it was, I couldn't communicate really with anyone besides, like, people I knew already. So, but it definitely, like, being on the show, it amplified, like, my confidence and made me, my life was, the last four months before the show were really amazing. But after being on the show and being on the show, it just kept getting, like, better and better. And it definitely changed my life in the most positive way. it's so crazy that you in the midst of this like season of life said I'm going to go on this reality television show no matter what show it is and it's not going to like it's it's just going to be good yeah like and I okay so I want to try to like make that into a piece of advice for the listeners
Starting point is 00:09:03 a listeners out there they're feeling great they're trying to take a risk in life they're trying to say yes to something do something new do something like to create a story yeah They don't exactly know what that story is going to look like. No. But they're willing to walk into it. What mindset or like what attitude do they need to have to not only say yes to it, but then to go into it and make something good out of it like you did? I think I'm a huge person. I've always been everything happens for a reason.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And my parents were always pushing me towards faith and like spirituality and just leaning into things and experiences. And I like one, it was a once in a lifetime experience. but I think sometimes, I remember being, now I'm like backtracking, but I remember being in college freshman year, and it was one of my first classes. And my communications teacher, it was like the class every freshman has to take. And you're sitting there and he was like, you know, the world favors the bold. And I remember him saying that.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And people were like starting getting up to leave. And he was like, no, no, no, everyone sit down. He was like, the world favors the bold. Like, go be the lion, be bold. And it just like stuck with me. And I was like, you know, I went, I just feel like I went through something like really life-changing all my health stuff. And then how everything happened, I got asked to come on The Bachelor, did The Bachelor, how everything worked out. And now my life has completely changed.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Like, looking at my life a year ago, I'm like, it was nothing like it was now. But it's also so much the same. But I just think you have to lean into what comes your way. I think if it's meant to be, it'll come to you. And I think that's what happened to me. And I think I have a really strong faith, really strong, like, spirituality. And I don't know. It was just the last year has been crazy, but it's like, I'm, like, happy for no reason.
Starting point is 00:10:56 And I never, there was a point in my life where I was like, I'm never going to be happy again. That's, I mean, that right there is something, one that we should celebrate. I think as humans, like when another human looks at you and says, hey, there's a season of my life. life that I never thought I was going to be happy again and now I sit here and I'm like thriving like that's something I want to like look at you and be like that's incredible yeah and it's like crazy because when you're going through it and it's so dark you don't understand it and I was sitting with my mom and my two younger siblings the other day and I was like I I was like this is like my life's always going to be like this and I just have to accept it and like live for like the people
Starting point is 00:11:35 that I love because I'm never going to be happy so I'm just going to live for the people that I love, and that's what I was doing. And then now I, like, realize, okay, like, I can be happy, too. My boyfriend's professor is way too friendly, and now I'm seriously suspicious. Wait a minute, Sam. Maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit. Well, Dakota, it's back to school week on the OK Storytime podcast, so we'll find out soon. This person writes, my boyfriend has been hanging out with his young professor a lot.
Starting point is 00:12:06 He doesn't think it's a problem, but I don't trust her. now he's insisting we get to know each other, but I just want her gone. Now hold up, isn't that against school policy? That sounds totally inappropriate. Well, according to this person, this is her boyfriend's former professor and they're the same age.
Starting point is 00:12:20 It's even more likely that they're cheating. He insists there's nothing between them. I mean, do you believe him? Well, he's certainly trying to get this person to believe him because he now wants them both to meet. So, do we find out if this person's boyfriend really cheated with his professor or not? To hear the explosive finale,

Listen to the Super Secret Bestie Club as a part of the Michael Thura podcast network available on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts. podcast or wherever you get your podcast. There was an interesting crossover here. One of my favorite poems or stories is we're in by a guy named John of the Cross, and it's called The Dark Night of the Soul. The Dark Night of the Soul is like literally the Dark Night of the Soul.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Like when your life feels like it's at rock bottom, like nothing good can come from it, that you are walking through like the valley of the shadow of death and everything around you is just haunting you. But then ultimately, you come out on the other side. And the lesson on the other side that a lot of people take from that story, and I take from that story is I want to learn from people like you. Like, I don't want to hear and learn from people who just, like, have, like, road on the clouds their whole life.
Starting point is 00:16:48 I want to learn from people who have, like, been through it, who come out the other side with wisdom. And so my question for you and that is, what wisdom now have you learned? Obviously, you sit in a different place today. It has been a year, right? Yeah. You're removed. The show is no longer, like, a part of it. of your like active identity even though people know you from it but your life has moved on from it yeah
Starting point is 00:17:08 and so what wisdom do you have to share in life now in general about what does it look like to go through that valley and come out the other side i don't know it's just like everything's like really just changed so much it's just like i'm happy now but i would just say like keep going and when you're at that like low place i remember someone told me they were like i was like i was like i don't want to move forward anymore and they were like just take it one more day I was like what and they were like just take it one more day and then tomorrow I'll just take it one more day like you don't have to like it's fine if you don't see like the shiny thing at the end just take it one more day and so I was like okay I'm just going to keep pushing for like one more day and get there but it's
Starting point is 00:17:54 crazy too because like all my siblings and like my parents they get all emotional about it because I don't know it's just it's crazy how you can be so low and then your life can change and then like something like this happened to me and now I'm here talking to you. Yeah, which is the best gift in the world, right? Yes. This is what you've always dreamed of. When you're at your lowest point, you're like, I hope one day I'm sitting in a garage talking to Ben Higgins. That would be pinnacle. That's what I'm reaching for. But seriously, I mean, it's something and I don't like say that lightly is like it's something we should all look at you and just be like I'm not proud of you because that makes it sound like I'm looking
Starting point is 00:18:33 It's just like I'm celebrating you. Like, that's so cool. And I want to learn from you. But it's like, it's interesting too because like I've met so many people. Like I went to, this was like a really eye-opening thing for me after the show. I went to Ashley and Jared's coffee shop and did like a book signing, meet and greet. And there were people coming up to me and it was like a younger girl with like a glass eye. And there were people like a girl who had Down syndrome like coming up to me and they like related to me in a different way.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And it was the first time I was like, whoa, I was like, it's, like, we have, like, our different, like, hard things that we've been through. But I'm, like, it's so similar in a way because, like, everybody goes through hard things. And I think the thing this show really made me realize, too, is sitting in the group of girls that I was in and all of, literally the whole cast on my season had, like, such incredible stories of things they had, like, overcome. And I was like, whoa, I'm not the only one who has been through things. And it just kind of opened my eyes to see, like, you don't really know somebody until you sit down and have a whole conversation with them. And, like, social media, like, you see what people want to put on social media, too. But I think that's what's so important is, like, showing, like, that other side, too. But it just really opened my eyes.
Starting point is 00:19:49 I'm like, everybody goes through things, even though they might seem so different. Like, some people might think it seems smaller. I'm like, it's not smaller. I'm like, you still go through that. Yeah. Can you imagine being that person that feels so much like an outsider? And they tune into your season of The Bachelor and they see you on there. And they're like, that's somebody I can relate with.
Starting point is 00:20:12 And they're crushing it. Yeah. And they're joy filled. And they're doing this thing. And now I feel like I can do the same thing. Yeah. For you, millions of people watch that show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I don't think it's in like. I was like crazy. I was like, they like me? Yeah. And they're looking up to you. And they're relating with you. And that's a beautiful thing for you to be inspired by. But it's also setting a whole new chapter in your life.
Starting point is 00:20:36 And that's what I want to talk about now is your life does not look the same as it did back then. So give us some updates. You obviously came out with a book. You've obviously, you know, romantically have been exploring other things in life. Like where does life look now? Not a year yet, but close to a year removed from the show. It's so cool because I've had so many like crazy opportunities. that I didn't think would happen, but they've been so, it's all been, like, positive is the
Starting point is 00:21:06 way to describe it. And everyone asked me about, like, how, like, how's the show? How's everything? I'm like, everything that has happened from it has been so positive to me. Of course, like, you have your, like, divids and bad moments. Like, I remember talking to you on the phone, and I was like, okay, it's like, I'm kind of struggling. Everyone's talking about me online. But it's like, but a year from the show, I, like, look back. and never could have I imagined that any of this would come from it. And now I get to work with brands. I never, like, thought I would work with.
Starting point is 00:21:38 And now, like, my social media is a way for me to, like, help myself and help my family and other people. And I'm, it's, like, it's the coolest thing ever. So the book, too. Yeah. You've got to mention the book here. No, the book, the book's been one of my favorite things. What's the name?
Starting point is 00:22:02 Where can people find it? Daisy do, all the sound she knew on Amazon. Daisy do. All the sound she knew. On Amazon. Yeah. And that's been, my favorite thing is I get pictures from parents of their kids reading it who have cochlear implants or hearing aids.
Starting point is 00:22:20 And I go into schools. I've gone into a lot in Minnesota. And I like read younger kids my book. And they're also fascinated about my cochlear implant, fascinated about hearing. And then usually there's like one or two kids who have it. And so like they come up and like sit by me and we'll talk about it. And I'm like, this is like a moment for them. I'm like, it's not about me.
Starting point is 00:22:41 It's about them. And then all the kids are talking to them and making them feel more included. And I'm like, that's what it's about. Because sometimes you see something that makes you feel different. Because it made me feel so different. And I was like, the book has been like, way I feel like for me to help bridge that gap which has been so rewarding and so it's like that's what I want to do like I want to help you know everyone has something that makes them different although some
Starting point is 00:23:10 people have something that makes them visibly different and I feel like when you're a little kid sometimes you get judged or growing up going through middle school high school even people can be negative and be mean to you and so I feel like if they're exposed to a younger age and they get like me sitting in front of them talking about and be like oh like I'm an adult I have it they're all so interested and they want to like touch it and feel the magnet and then they're talking to all their friends so yeah that's and I feel it like I feel like I light up when I talk about it something like that's what I know like if anything came from the show or anything it was that and the fact that I can help other kids feel like they're more not or just feel like
Starting point is 00:23:56 feel like what makes them different can make them special in like the best way so in like more like spiritual world we call that a calling um in other worlds that just like we would call like just amazing opportunity i would call it your calling because you do light up like there's something like emotionally different about you when you talk about that and you're the best type of influencer because you're influencing these little kids now is so funny yeah it's like with Carly on the way here. It was one of my good friends and on my management team. But I was talking to her and I was like, I just like, I'm like, what is happening?
Starting point is 00:24:37 I'm like, I'm an influence. You are. You're an influence in the best way because there'll be a time in that little kid's life who's sitting next to you as you're in this reading circle with little kids. And they're like, you know the moment. So I have a story about my life. And I don't want to make this about me. But when I was seven years old, I have this story that changed.
Starting point is 00:24:56 the way I saw people forever or saw myself because I didn't get chosen for this like partner reading program and it made me feel like an outsider and I've lived in that world, that narrative forever. Can you imagine the kid who's sitting next to you up there and say, no, that's my story? No, it changed the way I saw myself forever because I saw myself a part of the group. Yeah. Because this person who was on TV, who everybody loves and looked up to and we're so excited to see also has the same thing as me. Yeah. And now I'm not a part of the outside group. I'm now like the cool kid that everybody's asking about like what this thing is on my head and like they're attracted to me. They're asking me questions about myself. Like you
Starting point is 00:25:33 changed life. Like forever. Like how cool is that? That's really cool. And it's like, I'm like, what? Because of this crazy show. Yeah. It's crazy. But I think it's like everything happens for reason and I think me being on the show was kind of like at the end of the day now I look back at it and I'm like it wasn't for me to find love I think it was for me like wasn't for me to find love for me it was a bigger purpose than that for me and it was for me to like help other people and inspire them in a way and like looking back I'm like it was one of the best experiences in my life And I think, I don't know, like, it's just, I can't be more grateful for it and more positive about it because it was awesome. So in closing here.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Yeah. When you got off the show, you and I did talk. Yeah. And it felt like at that point in time, the world was swirling around you very quickly. Oh, for sure. You're trying to make sense of it all. Yeah. You didn't know what was next.
Starting point is 00:26:41 You know, it was just a good conversation with you about, you know, what was. next how do you make the most of this or how do i even walk through this thing well but that was also in the like heat of the show the show hasn't hadn't been done yet yeah so now you're on the other side yeah have those questions been answered that you're asking back then about what's next and what does life look like or are they still yet to be seen i think there's like so much that i i still kind of feel like i'm in that like what is going on half the time but also i do think back to our conversation a lot and I think about what you told me and you were like I was in this world and you were kind of like relating back to me how like I felt like you felt similar to and then I remember
Starting point is 00:27:30 you telling me I was like you know how can I help other people with this process like how can I take this and turn it to help other people and I was like okay that's how I want to look at look at it and so a lot of the things like I've done from now it's like stemming off that and I'm like how can I help other people?
