Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life with your host, me, Gia Judice,
Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler.
Welcome back to another episode.
of Dirty Rush, I'm your host, Daisy Kent, and today we are jumping into part two of sorority
sisterhood after graduation. Can you introduce yourselves and where you went to college and how you met?
So we went to Arizona State and we graduated. 97. I was going to say 97. Yep, 97. That is so amazing.
So how long have you guys been friends for? Well, the interesting part is actually I, even though I'm the same age as
Flora and Katie, who is somewhere, we actually, I came into Arizona State a year later.
I went to another school first and then came to Arizona State.
So they were already friends and in the sorority.
So Flora actually ended up being my pledge mom as we went through sorority.
So as we went through Rush, she ended up being my big sis.
So that's how we ended up meeting originally as we went through.
She kind of found me and kind of followed me through.
and that was how we became good friends.
I love that.
That's so fun.
So I just had my little on for this episode too.
She was a little earlier.
I had talked to her,
but I had her on.
And me and her are like super close.
She's,
I'm getting married in December
and she's one of my bridesmaids.
Oh, that's so fun.
Yeah, so that's so cool to like see you guys
and that you have like had this relationship.
There she is.
There's Kath.
We call her Catherine.
Her name's Katie.
We met basically when we were 18, 19 years old, and we all just basically turned 50 or 51.
We're in the 50, 51 age.
So we're going on, what is that, 30 something years?
Do you have like some favorite memories of when you guys were in college together?
I remember Flora just being having so much life and being a pledge that kind of, I knew one of our other sorority sisters was my friend from junior high high school in college.
And she had already had this great group of friends and, you know, kind of brought me in under her wing and, you know, just clicked with everybody because we were already friends. So, but I remember, Laura, just having so much life and always kind of wanted to protect me. And so anything that would go on or anywhere, she and her boyfriend at the time would just, you know, take me somewhere, get me anywhere I would go. And I just remember thinking that I kind of didn't have to do a lot, any of the,
you know, hazing kind of stuff that, not hazing, but like, just kind of like the different things
like, you know, oh, you know, here's a quarter go, you know, make a phone call to somebody, you know,
whatever the silly things that they used to make us do. She kind of just always kind of pushed me
through, so I, you know, as we were going through. So she always just kind of took care of me.
So I don't know if there's any one specific thing that I can remember, but what about you,
Flo? One of my most, let's call it honorable mention, aka embarrassing moments, was
freshman year. It was Parents Weekend.
and my mom was not able to come out.
So all of my girlfriend's parents were there,
and they decided to take us out to Kyoto's,
which is like a tepaniaki sake bombing place.
And clearly I did not know how to control my alcohol intake.
And I 100% overserved myself.
And I ended up on the floor of the restaurant
with a rose in my mouth.
And there was a couple of one or two of our other friends
that decided to join me in that picture.
But we die laughing because we pull out pictures every so often.
And that is like a story that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
And I'm glad that those parents got to know me because I would think first impression is like,
you do not be friends with that girl.
But I think I've redeemed myself after, you know, 30 years of friendship.
But it was hands down one of our funniest moments, especially for everybody else.
I think some of the times that are so funny too, what we do now is probably once a month.
Wouldn't you say Flora, one of us finds a picture from when we were in college.
And, you know, one of my favorite is some of the girls, not Flora and I.
Well, maybe you did, Flo, I don't remember, but really love that Jennifer Aniston haircut
from Friends.
And it was short and real magical.
And so just as a little bit of, you know, kind of make people laugh a little bit,
we will show like snapshot pictures that, you know, take a picture on our iPhone and send it out to our group.
We have a group that says the girls and it's on WhatsApp and it has like crying faces on it and the golden girls.
And so we just, that's how we kind of communicate.
We have this group chat.
And so we would put stuff on there.
And if you just run across a picture that is, I mean, just too good for words, you got to post it.
I mean, even if you're having a bad day, you can look at that picture and be like, I mean, it could have been worse.
We could have been lying in the midst of Kyoto's after Saki Boms.
100%.
That's so fun.
I love that you guys have, like, such a close relationship still.
That's awesome.
I feel like there was a lot during college, but I feel like our relationship has gotten even closer after college and through kids and helping each other through life in general.
Off of that, you said, like, as you guys have gotten older.
and had kids.
Do you guys have any kids that are like college age and have gone through recruitment?
So I would say that, let's see here, Jana, her daughter and my daughter are almost the same age.
She went to TCU.
My daughter went to Auburn.
She now lives in New York.
And then let's see, who.
So, and then our friend Taryn, her daughter goes to Tennessee.
So she went through Rush.
And then what is that?
Are those the oldest out of all of us?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So we have some boys in there.
But as far as the girls, they, yeah, definitely went through rush.
I do have a funny story about when I dirty rushed Ashley.
Do you remember that?
I would love to hear it.
Yes.
So Ashley, who's a little firecracker, she, I met her in the dorm.
And I only lived in the dorm, like, for only of,
Not very long because I moved on to the, at ASU, they have sorority floors.
Anyways, I met Ashley.
It's just kudos, cues a button.
And she ended up going through spring rush.
And I just didn't follow the rules and would just be calling her behind the scenes.
Yes.
I had like, hindsight, that was not the best idea.
But she, I'm like, just don't, I promise you, I promise you.
Because a couple of us also were great exceptions.
I was one of them, our other friend Julie.
but I kept telling Ashley, do not go another house.
I promise you we're going to take you.
So, yeah.
But I would say it was helpful for our daughters going through rush,
especially some of the, you know, the southern rushes can be a little intimidating.
Oh, for sure.
They're like a specifics for already that like you wanted your daughter to go into
or did you like not care and we're just like whatever?
No, I, you know, we're DG.
So obviously I was like, would have loved.
loved it if she was a DG.
But she ended up going PyeFi.
She was between Pfei Phi and Fimeu.
Fimee was definitely more southern, I would say.
Okay.
And so Pai Fai had a little bit more diversity as far as girls at different areas.
But she was pretty torn until the very end.
Yeah.
But she did, yeah, she did decide to go Pai Phi Phi Fai.
So cool for her like seeing U.B.
so close with your sorority sisters still?
Like, do you think she's found that in her sorority?
I mean, I will say that I don't know.
I mean, Ann, do you know of any other girls?
You know, I don't know.
It's so funny because we just were in France.
And our friend who were in France with, it was her 50th.
And so she had this great party and all families were invited.
So for me, my family couldn't come.
I have a son who's 15 and my husband was working.
And so it was just me that came.
but Laura's whole family came
Katie's whole family came
Jana's daughter came
you know Ashley's girls are younger
younger even than my son so they didn't come
but like to see all the kids
that they don't know each other besides being
with us and we're all these aunts
that they've you know been shoved onto
and just you know like loving them and being there
but to see them all together
and they don't know each other very I mean
they know each other from us being together
but it's like their connection was so close because we're so close.
But a couple of them had told, I mean, I'm sure Savannah told you to Flora,
but it was like, I think we're kind of a unicorn.
Like, I mean, there is, you know, I mean, what is it,
Flora, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, is there six or seven of us that this whole time,
seven that have stayed?
I mean, there's not a day that doesn't go by that we don't, at least text with one
one of the group or if not a whole group text and talk to each other.
I mean, we get really mad when we don't see each other at least once, if not twice a year
and make a point.
So I think it's to see the kids then go on and be so close to and want those same relationships
for themselves.
I feel like that's kind of an example we tried to set for them.
Like your most important friends are the ones that, you know, help you survive through life.
And that's what we all kind of done together is we've we've grown up together and now have raised our kids to get, you know, you get advice like, oh my gosh, what's happening here.
And somebody's been through it at some point.
So I think it's so special.
I don't think it's, I think it's pretty rare.
I mean, most people have a couple sorority sisters that are friends, but not all of us that get along so well, you know.
We do make it a priority too.
You know, you really do have to put the effort in and we live all across the whole country.
So some of it is just being intentional to keep those relationships going.
But it's definitely a priority for us.
Yeah.
I'm sure like life like I feel like after I graduated like it got so much more busy.
Like I can't imagine like when like I'm married and like start having kids and stuff.
I'm like it just gets crazier.
So that's so awesome that you guys have saved friends this whole time and that you all are so intentional with that.
I think one of the most amazing things that I've noticed is these kids like Savannah being grown up.
The conversations that I had with them on this trip, I mean, it's like, oh my gosh, I love the person you've turned into.
I loved your family and I knew you were going to be great, but now you've exceeded my expectations, you know?
So, but I do feel like it's because a little bit of all of us have all kind of, you know, we've all been at least a little part or we've used each other as examples as we've raised our kids to be, you know, to,
help them through. So it's, it's so nice to have that base and that, you know, support system.
But I will tell you that even still, these old ladies can really do some shenanigans. So even on our
girls trips, we come out really hot. We're like a roaming candle and go really big. And then we
maybe have to rest the next day. Before I let you guys go, do you have like any like advice that you
would give somebody that's graduating college and they want to keep a good like relationship with their
sorority sisters? I would say,
They, and we all have like kids sort of at different times, and you do go through different phases.
But again, it's really taking the time and making it intentional and a priority.
Like for me, I moved quite a few times, but like this, these girls are always been my, my rock.
And so it's just making sure that even if you, you know, you'll meet like meet moms and the moms club and all these different things.
We've all made, obviously made other friends.
but this is a pretty special bond.
I'd say these are our go-to girls, for sure.
I think also we all have been very vulnerable and authentic with each other.
I think that's a really important thing to not trying to be someone you're not.
And I think all of us feel comfortable enough to, if we see that happening, be like, wait a minute, what's happening here?
You guys put yourself in check or, you know, there's no problem calling each other out to be able to
make sure that we, you know, we stay true to who we are and being authentic and who we've always
been. So I think that's important to have good friends that you can find that do that.
They can be your cheerleaders, but they can also be your reprimenders to say, hey, look,
that's not who you are. Don't be that way. You know, like, stay on your path. Yeah. I love that.
Well, thank you guys so much. This was so amazing and so many people are going to love listening to
this. I mean, I love talking to you guys. I like,
makes me excited about me and my friends too.
And when we all start having kids and everything,
I can't believe you all went to France together.
That's so fun.
That was the craziest part to see these kids now grown up and like having a beer or
I'm like, wait, no, no, you're not old enough to be doing that.
Oh, wait, yeah, you are.
Oh, my gosh.
This is so weird because I haven't gotten any older.
I don't know how you're okay to do this.
Yeah, that's the other thing.
We still think we're 18, even though we're really not.
But we'd like to pretend.
I love that.
Well, thank you both so much.
I really, really appreciate you.

sports listen to everyone watches women's sports on the iHeart radio app apple podcast or wherever you
get your podcast hey joan thanks for coming on i'm excited to chat with you thanks for having me you know
it's funny the only time i talk about my sorority anymore is on i heart radio i know right i was like
it's bringing back all these memories i kind of love it and recently i actually went back to my
story which i had done a really long time no way that's so fun yeah it was really good did you see a bunch of the
girls that were like in it now. Yeah. And it's so different when I was in the sorority. I got in like I was a little
bit of a nerd. I was a computer nerd. I was like and that's kind of why I joined the sorority. I had like
really no social life and I joined when I was a junior. So I didn't rush until I was a junior.
Oh no. I know. It's crazy. And I miraculously got in because my sorority was on academic probation because
they were not smart girls. They were partiers. It was a party sorority. So I got in the
perfect sorority for me because that's what I needed, but they needed me because I brought their
GPA up and they got off academic probation. What school and what sorority was it? I was University of
Maryland and I was a Delta Gamma. Oh my gosh. So fun. What were you? I was Alpha Phi and I went to
San Diego State. And are you still, do you keep in touch with any of your sorority sisters? A few. I've won
really good friend. Like she was in my wedding. I was in hers, that kind of girl. And if you live in this
area that I'll see out every once in a while. I've kept in touch with kind of sporadically over the
years. But other than that, I haven't really. But like I weirdly will meet people that. So the day I got
announced to be the golden bachelorette, like to the world was at these things called the Disney
up fronts. Yeah. And after, and it's a big, big, huge thing. And afterwards, we go to this big,
um, hotel and they have a gigantic with thousands of people in a ballroom, a, like a meet and greet.
And so everybody that's going to be on shows in, like, starting in the fall, they have there as well as all these media people.
So some boy came up to me.
He was like, hey, you were friends with my mom.
She was in your sorority.
And I'm like, who?
And he tells me her name.
I'm like, oh, my gosh.
And yeah, sure enough, it was her son.
So now he, like, works in media.
I know so I'm old.
And then my son's best friend, his aunt was in my sorority.
And she was in my life's class even.
So, like, everyone's like, you just, like, get a sprinkling of people that have been in your life over the
years and you just had no idea. It's so crazy how like things like become so connected it feels like.
It really is funny. And you know, if you just are around and you get to be old like me, then
things just keep coming full circle. Yeah. Did your daughters when they were in college,
did they do sororities? Neither one of them. My boys were athletes. So they didn't do them either. So I kind of
was the end to Greek like my niece did it. She went to a university of Florida and she was in a sorority.
couldn't even tell you which one though yeah okay fun do you have a memory from being in a
sorority that still makes you like laugh so so many yeah you know living in a house with a bunch of girls
there is like a memory a day i feel like literally there's nothing like that it was i lived in the house
for a year and it was so much fun wasn't like one of the funest things that we had a dormer so we all
slept in the same room and then we had day rooms where like that's where you kind of like did
homework or whatever, and you had one day bed and then three desk and three dressers. And we had like
that level of the floor was just a disaster area. We were all barring each other's clothes. It was,
the rooms were small. It was a disaster, but we had so much fun. And I'll tell you the memory I remember
most that was really funny was, it was kind of, I don't know, like I'm not a hairy person,
probably like you, but girls were waxing and it was like their first experience with waxing. And it
We were about to go on spring break, so they decided to do their bikini lines.
So the whole bikini area.
And so, like, four of the girls were in a room.
I happened to walk in, and they were all, like, smearing the wax on.
And the first one goes to pull it off, and she screams bloody murder.
And she's like, it hurts so bad.
And so they're all waxed, and they don't know how to get it off now because now none of
want to do it.
I will always remember that.
First of all, I've never done the waxing thing.
And I was like, well, I never will because I've been scarred after that experience.
I could never do it.
It was like, it looks like horrible.
That's so fun.

Okay, is there something that you wish you knew when you were 20 about friendship?
So I think like probably you're probably still in the stage of your life
where you think that the friends that you make at that stage,
you'll be friends with forever and that it's not going to like take effort
because you know you love them so much and you're so close now.
But like life kind of gets away from you.
And sometimes, like friendships that are important to you, you don't make the effort that you need to to keep them because all of a sudden a month is gone by or a day is going to buy or two days are going by, a week is going to buy, a month is going to go by. All of a sudden, a year has gone by. And it's so hard to catch up. And you keep thinking, I'm going to call them and we're going to catch up, but you think, oh, I'm going to need an hour to do that. So you keep not doing it. I think maintaining important friendships, you know, as time goes on is hard. And if I had known to you.
to do that, I probably would have been better friends with the people that I had been in my
sorority with, people that I really loved, and I still wonder in my mind, whatever happened to them.
So they were really like part of my life and a big part of my life and part of my history.
And I wish I had known that, that, you know, make sure that you maintain those friendships.
I've become a lot better as I've gotten older.
Like I have people I've been friends with for 30 years now, but kind of that little chunk of
my life, like growing up into, like through my college years, I haven't been in a little.
good about. Yeah. Oh, that's like great to know too. I'm like, I need to make sure, because it's
crazy how even after like when I graduated, how like busy life gets and like you don't realize
you're all starting different jobs. Like you're all doing different things. And now people move
different places. And so just like making time to like really like reach out to like the people
to maintain those friendships is hard. And I feel like I did it for about 10 years. So when we were all
in the, you know, kind of still partying stage,
gay, I come out of college, still super social.
Then a lot of us, you know, met people.
So then we were in the wedding stage,
and you got together for weddings,
and then we were kind of in the baby stage a little bit.
And I think that's about when it faded,
because when you're in the baby stage
is when it gets really busy.
And, you know, your life revolves around your kids
instead of your social life.
And that's when I kind of lost touch.
So the first 10 years after college, I think I was good.
And then, you know,
then it kind of really lagged. And I feel bad. I feel like I wish I had maintained, you know,
some of those relationships. Yeah. Do you think that the sisterhood you experienced is the same
as what, like, young women experienced today? Yeah, I think it is. You know, I think like one of the
special things about being in a sorority is it's about the friendships, but it's also like,
and I didn't realize this probably until much later in life that it kind of prepares you for life a little bit.
It teaches you how to kind of, you know, not everything about the sorority is, you know,
your social meeting frat guys or going to parties.
You know, there's other things about friendships that you're learning because you're living
with all these girls.
And, you know, there's also that whole philanthropic element about it.
Everybody has their philanthropy.
Every sorority does.
And that's kind of when that first became an important thing in my life.
And it's, I've maintained that throughout my life now.
Like philanthropy is very important to me.
I've been a lot of boards.
I do a lot of functions.
I still do them.
Chalk and I are about to do one in Kansas.
I just did one for the American Heart Association in February.
I do pancreatic cancer.
I did that in April.
So, like, that part of my life all started when I was in my sorority.
That's so cool.
I love that.
You've, like, stuck with that.
That's amazing.
And I don't think I would have ever known that.
Like, I didn't grow up with a lot of money.
So my parents didn't, you know, do philanthropic things.
We were just paying their mortgage, you know?
Like, it was, that wasn't part of our life.
So I learned that kind of in my sorority.
And then, you know, it was fortunate up to have some resource.
and do now that I can, you know, do these things that are important in the world. And, you know,
it's not just about me buying like a new purse. You know, sometimes I think I should probably
give this to charity. I don't need another new purse. Yeah. Yeah. That's amazing. Now,
that's cool that that being in a sorority, that's what sparked that for you. That's really awesome.
Yeah, yeah, a little bit. Yeah. Is there any advice you would give people who are graduating
college about like maintaining
relationships and friendships
as they grow up?
Yeah, you know,
you never know
which person is going to be the one that
is going to need you or you're going to need.
So I feel like you have to be very,
you know, as much as you, as much time you have,
you know, that you're not spending like, you know,
with your kids or with your spouse,
or whatever, maintaining relationships should be like the next one down.
So family first, family religion, those kind of things first.
And the next one, like those friendships, because those are the things that will get you
through the hard times.
Those are the ones that are going to help you find jobs.
Those are the ones that may end up being your kids, friends, parents.
There are so many like things in life that come from different directions that if you
maintain friendships, it will all come back.
If you make that effort, it will all come back tenfold.
Yeah. Oh, I love that.
It's true. And I think, you know, once again, I'm telling you this, you're so young.
I wish I had done all these things that I'm telling you now when I was younger. I didn't do that.
And now I am so much better about maintaining friendships and about making sure I reach out.
You know, even people from The Bachelor, you know, you know the experience.
You spend so much like a really important, you know, life-changing time with them.
And then the show ends and you're done.
And, you know, you think, oh, my God, these people are.
are always going to be in my life and then all of a sudden you're back home and they're not in your life.
And, you know, I, I zoom like with Carrie Fatman, the stylist, probably twice a month at least.
He's so sweet.
He's the best, isn't he?
I don't know if you ever met Alicia Gupta.
I was on the HD TV show with her and she and I became really good friends.
And I zoom with her every once in a while.
And the great thing about social media is you can zoom with people.
You know, you can see TV days.
we'll grab a glass of wine. Alicia and I will and we'll sit on the phone for three hours.
And like she's young, but like we just have this great friendship.
I still keep in touch with some of the golden girls.
So with Kathy and Susan and Nancy and Christina and a couple others, you know.
So I am really much better about keeping like those relationships that are important to me.
I make sure that I reach out and keep them going.
Yeah.
Oh, that's great advice too.
Thank you so much for coming on.
It was great talking.
