Starting point is 00:00:00 There's no shortcut for saving time, but saving money is simple. Just combine your car and home insurance with Bel Air Direct and save. Get a quote at bellair direct.com. Netflix. Halamite have fallen. Prevailing narrative is that Netflix's business is deteriorating. Management's decision to pull back on its engagement report should only encourage this thinking. Because think about it. A company that's doing well is not suddenly going to decide to hide their metrics.
Starting point is 00:00:28 No, you often are like... You would want to be bragging about it. We should hide from the public. well we're doing. Yeah. We shouldn't let people know that subscribers are absolutely ripping right now and people can't stop watching this garbage. Bragging is a sin.
Starting point is 00:00:39 We should refrain from that. It's like, okay, what are you guys hiding? And the stock reflects that. Their stock could pop 20, 30% if they announce tomorrow that they are going to the episodic model. I'm surprised they haven't after all these years. It is a stubborn... It would juice their numbers so much.
Starting point is 00:00:55 If I'm Greg penis, I'm doing that tomorrow. But if you're Greg penis and you know how trash your product is, imagine the drop-off you see after like episode three when people are like we're not publishing that data I do feel right right the days of house of cards and orange of the new black are gone Netflix and chill I say are you awake hello are you awake hello are you awake? You know what I want yeah you know what I want hello are you awake do you know what I want what is going on what's going on the hell is going on what the hell's going on what is going on anymore ladies is this welcome welcome back. You want to know what's going on. You came to the right place. I'm Ben. That's
Starting point is 00:01:56 a meal. This week we're talking about the downfall of Netflix. The place that used to be synonymous with getting laid. Netflix and chill? I hated that. I always hated that phrase. Because no one would chill with you. You were Netflix alone. No, it's just, I don't know, it just Netflix in hand. HBO and Solo. I know, I don't know, it just felt too, it felt very buzzfeedy.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I mean, anyone who was like, I think it started because you were sending a text like Netflix and Chill. Yeah. Anyone who was actually doing that, it's like, has anyone seriously ever sent Netflix and Chill? Oh yeah, I'm sure. Yeah, because that's, I mean, that's how it became a meme. Right. Goofy. It's goofy stuff. Hey.
Starting point is 00:02:48 It's like sending a you up text. Yeah, you up, are you up? Are you away? I say, are you awake? Hello, are you awake? Hello, are you awake? Hello, are you awake? You know what I want.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Yeah, you know what I want. Hello, are you awake? Do you know what I want? Would you like to come over and watch a Netflix show and relax on the couch? No? Okay. All right. Well, have a nice thing.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Well, then I hate this whole meme. This whole meme is stupid. This whole meme is stupid. The meme promised me we would get together. It's Q&A time. It's that monthly time. Ben and Emielshow. dot com.
Starting point is 00:03:21 It's that time of the month. Drop the phone number on there. Hey, the offer for the, and also the offer for the Chase Sapphire preferred card is almost going to go away. You better hurry up. If you didn't get one, sorry. No, you still have a little bit of time. But we don't know how much time is left.
Starting point is 00:03:38 So go to the credit card list.com. And, hey, while you're at it, check out our episode on the channel from last week. the not only the stock twits episode, but the one that we just did last week. And here's a comment from that one. It's from the comment of the week is from Sichuan Davidson. Just a mountain of evidence for the Benfiles in this one. So if you're curious what that means.
Starting point is 00:04:03 I guess I don't even remember what the hell I did or said, but apparently it's bad enough that it's all going in my permanent record. Also, a little reminder to go, not a reminder. go watch the little IMVU clip we did innu. A real fun little corner of the internet we found on an older bonus episode. We released it to the public if you want to go see that. Talk full of freaks. Real freaks.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Freaks. It's a real fun clip. All right. Netflix. What is it? It's a streaming service. That's the first question. It was started by some guy named Reed, I think. Reed Hastings.
Starting point is 00:04:41 There actually was a documentary on it. Funny enough, it wasn't on Netflix. It was on, like, Prime or something. Well, were they taking down Netflix, or were they talking about how great it was? It was interviewing all the early employees and stuff and how they created Netflix and how they went to, like, uh, uh, the blockbuster to try to get them to buy it and blockbuster went. Get the fuck out of my office.
Starting point is 00:05:06 For like 50 million bucks. Yeah. Yeah. They probably would have rented into the ground. Netflix versus the world. That's what it was called. And I guess it was on, I don't even know where. it was on.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Netflix. No, it was on like HBO, which makes no sense. But it was interesting. It was interesting stuff. They really were a scrappy upstart, like truly putting the DVDs
Starting point is 00:05:29 in the envelopes themselves and whatnot. Oh, I mean, we've come a long way. Literally lived through it. I remember the little flimsy Netflix envelopes and being like, this is the future. They're going to mail the, I don't have to go to,
Starting point is 00:05:43 I don't have to go to Blockbuster anymore. But Blockbuster almost had it too. They almost had it because they finally caught on and they did what Netflix was doing. And they said, hey, you don't even have to wait for it to come back in the mail. You can go to your local Blockbuster, drop off and pick up new movies to your heart's content. You're going to wait three to five business days for your new DVD? No, no. Moron.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Idiot. Stupid idiot. Fuck face. Shit face. We figured this out. Yeah. Come over. Come check it out. Come blockbuster and...
Starting point is 00:06:15 Blockbuster and bust. Very good, yes. So, anyway... That's terrible. That's never going to catch on. Blockbuster and bust? No. Yeah. Like, wait, bust as in like...
Starting point is 00:06:28 Like nut? No. Yeah. All right. The last... I think one of the last ones is located in Oregon. Blockbuster and hang? Blockbuster and hang and relax. I digress.
Starting point is 00:06:40 We... Sorry, sorry, sorry. Let's... But that was the old days of Netflix. It seems like nobody'd be watching it anymore. Nobody's watching the shit. But I do want to give it its credit. Like they were...
Starting point is 00:06:51 Sure. They were revolutionary in a sense. Sure. You know, after the whole DVD mailing thing, they came out with watch instantly. Streaming. Yeah. Which I, man, I remember having a conversation with my...
Starting point is 00:07:09 Honestly, revolutionary in multiple ways. Sorry, go ahead. My host dad in Spain. When I was there last in, what, 2012, 2013? And Netflix was just starting to go international, and he pooh-poot it. He was like, Ben, this is not going to work here. Piracy is too big in Europe. Why would anyone pay, you know, $12 a month when they can just pirate things?
Starting point is 00:07:33 And I was like, damn, okay, well, I guess he's right. And part of the reason why I, as we'll get into, I famously passed on the stock like 15 years ago. and... Poor guy. I want to kill myself. No, but revolutionary in the sense that they did the, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:50 watch instantly thing, which was basically just streaming, but they were just licensing IP from other places. And, you know, they were like, you know, you can watch whatever, the office or whatever was popular. And then they brought on...
Starting point is 00:08:04 House of Cards? Yeah, and then revolutionary in the sense that they were like, hey, we can create original content and we don't have to be like these... traditional studios who are beholden to add sales and all this stuff and we can take a risk. And yeah, they released House of Cards in 2013. That was that long ago. Isn't that weird?
Starting point is 00:08:24 And then I think the same year it was the jail show. Orange is the New Black. Oh, yeah. Wow, I forgot about that one. Yeah. And then it was just off to the races, right? They were like all of a sudden this new player in original programming. Yeah, and you could binge.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It gave way to the binging. I mean, and what was the... term? Netflix and bingeworthy. Oh, bingeworthy. Shows were now bingeworthy, which is like, yeah, not a thing. I don't like that.
Starting point is 00:08:53 I mean, it's traditionally not a great, I'm binging right now. Yeah, it's the sign that you have poor impulse control and you're kind of an addict. Oh, it's bingeworthy. Maybe you've got a food, an eating disorder. And they were on top for a while.
Starting point is 00:09:06 They rode that way for a long time. For a long time. But as we'll see, how the mighty have fallen. In fact, so let's kick it off with their recent finances, shall we? The stock is down 30% this year and 45%
Starting point is 00:09:19 from the highs of last year. They did have a bit of a reprieve earlier this year when it came out that they lost the bid for Warner Bros. Nice. Is Paramount? Yeah, Warner Brothers.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And stock climbed, but then, you know, it came back down. It's currently sitting at $284 billion in value in market cash. Q2 revenue was up 13.4% year over year to a whopping just over $12.5 billion, but the stock got punished because their guidance for the next quarter only called for a paltry 11.7% growth, which is a lot slower and a lot smaller than the market expected. So they got this new ad revenue tier, and that's set to double, and it's only going to double to $3 billion. That's only 6% of their
Starting point is 00:10:11 sales. So that gives me pause even more. I'm like, I feel like you're just going to piss people off and... Increasing the ads? Increasing ads, the subscription price keeps going up. Yeah. At a certain point, there's going to be a... They're truly just going to go back to being cable.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Oh, they've already talked about putting the channels on, like the 24-hour channels. Yeah. 24-hour channels bundling with like peacock. Yeah. At this point, fuck it. Do it, man. Do it. Just give it back to us.
Starting point is 00:10:41 I really don't care. Give it back. We'll have a Netflix guy come and install a fucking Netflix box. Jesus God. Q2, so this is the wild thing. They are very profitable now. Their margins are expanding. Q2 net income was up to $3.4 billion from $3.13 billion last year.
Starting point is 00:10:59 They are more profitable than ever. But their relevance is also eroding. So it's kind of like two ships passing in the night. Right. The days of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are gone. The days of Bojack Horseman and the Crown. Nobody watches this shit anymore. They had another big one.
Starting point is 00:11:18 They've had many. The things obviously was the massive. Yeah. All that. Love and robots. I don't even know what that is. So the main issue here is that nobody cares anymore. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:31 So their subscriber base is slightly growing. But we actually, so that's one of the things. They don't tell us the subscriber numbers anymore. They stopped. showing that metric. Right. And they're also going to stop, or they're at least cutting
Starting point is 00:11:44 their engagement metrics. Yeah. Because they're saying their subscriber race is growing, but the engagement per viewer is going down. Yeah. So they went,
Starting point is 00:11:53 you know what? Instead of telling you this engagement number twice a year, I think they do it bi-annually, like, we're just going to do it once a year. Well, yeah. So their engagement is flat. There are,
Starting point is 00:12:02 man, you freaks out there. 97 billion hours were watched on Netflix in the first half of the year, which is up only 2%. year over year. And that's that's pitted against their double-digit price hikes, which like you said, indicates that revenue growth is increasingly due to pricing and not audience growth.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Because if it was due to audience growth, that number would be way higher. But the revenues indicate, no, it's basically because they up to their prices. I mean, anecdotally, I know several people who just don't pay for it anymore. They're like, fuck it, I don't need it and I don't care. If there's a new show, I'll sign up for that garbage. I'll watch it. And then I'll cancel it. I've canceled it multiple times. I should do it again. I don't give a flying S. I don't know why it's a flying shit.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I remember the last thing I watched and it was the Raffina doll documentary they did. And before that, God, I can't even tell you. I barely open the thing. Every time I do open it, it makes that stupid fucking sound. And then I look at the homepage and I'm like, what is any of this garbage? All right. Yeah, let's log in here and see where the first. giving me a headache, the glitch. First of all,
Starting point is 00:13:11 look at how glitchy this shit is. Click out of that, please. Does it even work? Oh, my God. Try refreshing. Netflix, you're not. Netflix just, oh, my God, dude. Oh, yeah, there we go.
Starting point is 00:13:25 How to stay in the... No! All right, whatever. Okay, yeah, cool. Oh, my God. See, look, immediate... Mute it, mute it. We can't have this on here.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Oh, my God, dude. Suites. Okay, cool. I do like that they were like, what have we made it really stressful to use the site? Jesus. All right, scroll down. Today's top picks. We got suits.
Starting point is 00:13:48 We got Young Sheldon. The Crash. Shameless. Okay. You? That was a show. That was a show. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Then we get the top searches. We got this new Will Ferrell movie. Wait, I'm sorry. Did they do 15 episodes of the Hawk? Is that what that says? 10 episodes. 10 episodes. Will Ferrell really getting back to his roots.
Starting point is 00:14:09 It's... Yeah. Stranger Things. Worst Neighbor Ever. My life with the Walter Boys. I mean, what is gems for you? More like Young Sheldon? Oh, great.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Give us more like you. Wait, what do we have this more like Young Sheldon? You got Mom? You got Nickelodeon's Victorious? They are riding on some legacy shit here, too. True. Your next binge is Grey's Anatomy. Shameless, which I think was a Showtime Show,
Starting point is 00:14:34 Breaking Bad, AMC, obviously. Orange is the New Black is theirs. Part of it when I created a new profile just to do this. And it had you pick three things from just a random assortment of shows and movies. And it's like, pick three that you like and will create
Starting point is 00:14:49 a profile around you. Yeah. And it's just dog shit. I mean, go to new on Netflix. Let's see what they're pumping out. Yeah, what's new on Netflix? The Hawk, obviously. Ultimatum. It's getting panned. No idea. It's some crapola about it. New on Netflix. The top 10
Starting point is 00:15:07 shows. I do think this is a problem is that like, I think this is their, this is their viewer base. Like, the number one show right now is the ultimatum. I can't read what's under there. Mary or move on. Mary or move on.
Starting point is 00:15:21 I think it's... Oh, dude, they got Harlan Cobins. I will find you. Exactly. You're a big Cobain head. I'm a huge Cobenhead. And guys like me love this slap. They've really locked down the slop.
Starting point is 00:15:34 The slop audience. The top 10 movies today. Shipwrecked. You've got Wicked for... good, desire, body in the locker, Hunger Games, shipwrecked, and Boss Baby. How the hell is Boss Baby still in there? Oh, people are watching the Hunger Games in anticipation for the new 100 games. And then it's just a ton of like true crime. Let's see. Coming this week, a toxic love story.
Starting point is 00:15:58 That's what it feels like. It feels like they've captured the, they've gone after the, the people who are listening to True Crime Podcasts. Ooh. Okay. There's one I see. Can you find it? Can you see the one that I'm interested in? Poop, a scandal? No, the bombing of Pan Am 103. What is that? Click that. Click that.

Starting point is 00:18:21 overdraft coverage, and discounts provided by Cash App, a Block, Inc. brand. Visit cash.app slash legal slash podcast for full disclosures. Let's see some information. The tragic bombing of a transatlantic flight over, yeah, over Lockerby, Scotland in 1988, unites the local police and the FBI, I can't wait to watch that shit.
Starting point is 00:18:42 Interesting choice to dramatize this, though. This feels like a doc. Oh, they've been dramatizing stuff like this for... They dramatized 9-11 like 10 years after. They did it pretty early. Wouldn't that Nick Cage one come out? It was like... 2008 or something?
Starting point is 00:18:56 I'm gonna make a movie about 9-11. Ground Zero was still on fire when they greenlit that... The Lockerbee thing was tragic, man. They were like bodies still in fucking seats in the... And it was a 747, too, I believe. Dude, United 93 came out in 2006.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Are you fucking kidding? Five years after 9-11, they were like, let's make a movie. The body still had flesh. The Nick Cage 1 World Trade Center came out in 2006. They waited, they were like, we'll give it five years. Hollywood was like, and then I'm cashing it. That's insane, man. I'll give it five years and then I need.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Someone told me that they don't put, I think Luke said that they don't put the Netflix tag on things anymore. That are Netflix originals. It doesn't seem that way because it seems like... You can't really tell the difference between... Oh, yeah, they do. Wait, do they? I guess in the corner.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Here, scroll down. There was something called Field of Dreams. Starring Kevin Costner? No, that right there. Live on 813. What is that going to be? Oh, it seems like they've made a real... Wait, what the hell? The Phillies face the twins as Major League Baseball teams,
Starting point is 00:20:04 as Major League Baseball returns to the Iowa cornfields for a nostalgic night of America's favorite pastime. What? That's kind of cool. Oh, he's all the sudden in. I mean, that's kind of cool. That one thing, they're going to play in a cornfield. What is that thumping?
Starting point is 00:20:20 That's kind of making me nervous. Do you feel that? Yeah, but it didn't make me nervous. Well, the big one is coming. We all know that the big one's coming. I do think, you know, similarly with the World Cup thing, if they can make some massive, sports acquisitions, it'll be huge for them.
Starting point is 00:20:36 I think it's been huge for any of the streamers. When you force people to watch football on Amazon or whatever, it's like people are just going to be like, okay, fuck it, I'm buying. I mean, you log into Netflix and it's just it's such a terrible layout.
Starting point is 00:20:53 I do. I feel like I owe them a bit of gratitude because I feel like they kind of broke my habit of just putting on crap and watching it. I remember exactly what show was. It was nobody wants this, which was an apt title. And me and Sarah, we watched it. And all the way through, we're going, this fucking sucks.
Starting point is 00:21:16 And like it ended and we were just like, why did we do that? Yeah. And I literally said, let's not just watch crap anymore. And I have been so good about not watching just absolute trash. It really, it's insane. There's something about, it's almost like, Netflix gets a property or they get a show or a movie or whatever. And they go, this is awesome.
Starting point is 00:21:40 All right. Let's make it 20% less good. Let's, let's, we got to fill it with some shit. We got to make it look cheap. It always looks cheap. It feels cheap. It feels forced. It feels sloppy.
Starting point is 00:21:53 It just feels. And when I say sloppy, I mean like AI sloppy. It's, it just feels like slop. It feels like total crap. I think for, I mean, there goes shithead. Eat this. Watch. They were in a tough position where I think it.
Starting point is 00:22:05 in the beginning. So as we were talking about with that watch instantly feature, they were just licensing things, which honestly was kind of good. If you were just someone in the early Netflix stage, you're like, a big one, I feel like people were just ripping Friends episodes. And then all the sudden, when they wanted to go
Starting point is 00:22:21 to the original content route and other people started getting into streaming, they all of a sudden were like, Jesus Christ, we have to build out a massive back catalog in a very short amount of time. So they greenlit everything. I mean, a bunch of garbage. And not only Greenlit, we're spending so much money. I mean, from like
Starting point is 00:22:39 2013 to 2017, maybe 2018, it felt like 90% of the stuff that was on Netflix was just like famous actors you know phoning it in. It was just... And getting massive paychecks. Yeah, I mean, just crazy Ed Harris and like Jason Sousakis and like, it's just nuts. And the worst movie you've ever seen. I mean, just speaking to your point about the competition ratcheting up. Wait, go back to that. That was an interesting thread you found. The question, someone asked on Reddit, why do Netflix films with large budgets feel cheap? And what is this highest comment?
Starting point is 00:23:19 They have a mandate that all their original productions be filmed in 4K or higher for archival purposes. And it's something about the cameras. Oh, interesting. The biggest thing you're noticing is the color space through compression, something Netflix is actually very. good at, but streaming 4K uninterrupted at less than 16 megabits per second is a whole different ball game.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Interesting. Well, so according to Nielsen, the ratings house, whatever the hell, I don't know what the hell they do over there. I've been hearing about Nielsen's ratings since 1992. Who the hell is Nielsen? It shows that their share, Netflix's share of streaming is down to 17%
Starting point is 00:24:01 from 21% two years ago. And like we said, they no show subs and they only do the what we watched recap once a year instead of twice. And Morningstar, who's like a stock market analyst company, they had a pretty brutal take. They said, quote, the prevailing narrative is that Netflix's business is deteriorating. Management's decision to pull back on its engagement report should only encourage this thinking. Because think about it, a company that's doing well is not suddenly going to decide to hide their metrics.
Starting point is 00:24:35 No, you often aren't like... You would want to be bragging about it. We should hide from the public how well we're doing. Yeah. We shouldn't let people know that subscribers are absolutely ripping right now and people can't stop watching this garbage. Bragging is a sin. We should refrain from that. It's like, okay, what are you guys hiding? And the stock reflects that.
Starting point is 00:24:52 And in a... There was a recent conference call from their last quarter just a few days ago. Also, they have co-CEOs. One of them, Ted Saran. does? I believe so. And then the other one's Greg Peters. Okay. You need co-ceeos, dude? Greg Penes. Greg Peters. Did she say it's penis?
Starting point is 00:25:09 Yeah. It's Greg Penis, yeah. It's like that old S&L sketch where Tim Meadows is Dr. Poop. You don't remember that? No. Oh, he's just Dr. Poop. And there's no, he's just in it for like 60 seconds. Anyway. No, how did I not miss that old 60-second clip? It's a classic sketch. It's so good. But Greg
Starting point is 00:25:31 penis said there is not a linear relationship between viewing hours and revenue and profit. Oh? So the more people view, well, I guess that does make sense. So he's basically saying, hey, I mean, the reason why we don't show that that date is because it's not pertinent
Starting point is 00:25:48 to the... Is he basically saying, what do we give a fuck if people are watching? We just care if they're paying. Kind of, yeah. That feels like a... It feels pretty counter to every every other tech companies plan. I mean, literally every app is trying to juice their app in a way that, so you literally will not take your eyeballs off it.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Oh, yeah. Especially it feels weird when they're trying to point to ad revenue too. I'm sure your ad sales team wouldn't love you to be like, we don't give a shit if they're watching that garbage, as long as they're paying those subscription fees. I would be worried if I was him, if people were not enjoying my product. And like, we haven't even gotten to the part. there's been all these reports that
Starting point is 00:26:29 they're having this real season two problem where the season two problem they're having people who are coming for season one and then massive drop-offs in season two and you know there's all kinds of reasons for it because the shit sucks well there's shit sucking like me I mean I did not come back for nobody wants this I was out
Starting point is 00:26:53 and I mean it's not just that so beef, One Piece, the Knight Agent, have each lost between 30% and 70% of their second season audiences. According to Netflix's own figures, they also talk about the big gap between seasons. First season of One Piece, Netflix's biggest head of the year,
Starting point is 00:27:15 was way back in 2023. Oh, geez. And the second season is coming out. That's what they try to say. Oh, it's just because we put too much time between seasons. Look at Severance. Severance on HBO had like two, two years between seasons and it still
Starting point is 00:27:27 performed really well. Interesting. That's one of the arguments. I still can't imagine it's a great tactic. I do. I mean, which we talked about, I do think it also, that like bingeworthy thing I don't think is great for viewers. I think it I think it like tanks engagement and the communal
Starting point is 00:27:46 the communal sharing of the cultural experience. Absolutely. Everyone's on their own schedule. You know, Severance is a perfect example where it's like week to week of like, you know, you want to go on Twitter, you want to go on Reddit and be like, what does that mean? What the back is happening? Everybody's talking about the same thing at the same time.
Starting point is 00:28:03 It also, not only that, it prolongs people's subscription window. I'm more likely to, if I want to watch this beef crap, utter crap, and there's 10 episodes, if you give it, if you give me access all at once, I am far more inclined to just sign up maybe for a 10-day free trial, whatever they offer. watch that garbage and then cancel the thing. If you forced me to watch for 10 weeks straight, I'm probably going to hang on to it. It also makes it feel a bit more premium, too.
Starting point is 00:28:37 It makes it feel like, oh, this show is worth sticking around for. It's kind of a supply and demand thing. I will say also, just from very anecdotal evidence of the severance thing, okay, you've got me on that. I literally think I bought Apple TV for it. So did I. And then I'm like, you got me on this thing for 10 weeks. And literally every time it ends, I'm like, fuck, I want more.
Starting point is 00:28:57 Yeah. I started watching slow horses with Gary Oldman. Oh, yeah, you love slow horses. It's fun, okay? Now I've watched, one of they, on six seasons? I've watched every episode. Yeah. Slow horses, there he is.
Starting point is 00:29:10 I still think Gary Oldman is just, he's the same person to me as Tom York. They are just the same guy. I know that they're not, obviously, but they just remind me of each other. Interesting. He's fucking, he's the singer, right? They both have similar vibes. Tom York is just so fucked up looking, though. Yeah, what? Because the one eye, dude?
Starting point is 00:29:30 Nah, I don't know. He looks like my friend, Nick Davis, growing up, my best friend Nick Davis, who looks like his mom. Hey, guys, we got to take a quick break to talk about Superpower. And if you've been watching the show, you know, I love my superpower. Okay? I took my lab tests maybe almost a year ago at this point. I'm actually doing another one soon.
Starting point is 00:29:54 I can't wait to see how my results have changed. if at all. But I love it, okay? You go take your lab tests. If you're anything like me, you go to the doctor, normally, you do your physical. And they go,
Starting point is 00:30:08 I don't know. They give you nothing. Just check your cholesterol or something. Right. And you're like, am I healthy? What's going on? I don't know. Why don't you get out of here?
Starting point is 00:30:16 Do you know anything about me? Nope. And then that's it. And you don't see him for a year. That was superpower. Not with superpower. No. They take your test.
Starting point is 00:30:25 They got this great app. you get a whole full picture of what's going on with you, stuff you didn't even know about in your body. You're like, damn, well, I'm glad that's doing okay. Or maybe I need to work on that a little bit. It's affordable, too. It's the most affordable 100-plus biomarker blood test starting at $199, and it's HSA and FSA eligible.
Starting point is 00:30:47 You know, in the future, we're all going to be laughing about how healthcare was in the old days, you know, when we would react to problems that occur instead of being proactive like superpower is doing. They're doing proactive health care, making it a reality and accessible to everyone. So you can get insights into over a hundred of your biomarkers, cholesterol, iron, cortisol, testosterone, and so many more.
Starting point is 00:31:09 You can learn your true biological age. Me, I'm like freaking eight years old. I'm 31. And the pace of your aging, you can visualize all of your health data in one place, track your progress over time. They will create a personalized protocol with tailored supplement stack recommendations
Starting point is 00:31:23 and potential prescriptions that can help you reach health goals. So make this the year you stop guessing about your health with superpower. For a limited time, our listeners get $20 off to unlock their new health intelligence. Head over to superpower.com and use code Bays for $20 off your $199 Superpower membership. And after you sign up, they'll ask you how you heard about superpower. Tell them the Ben and Emile show sent you to support the show. anyway yeah that's the problem people they they lost their they lost their shit ozark was really good i did i did watch ozark was really good um squid game was really good that was their last big cultural phenomenon i would say and that was like 2021 yeah i think so crazy and then they released an absolute
Starting point is 00:32:14 shat pile of a second season yeah that's they were like what if we just ran it back and it's the same concept. Yo, remember that good time we all had? Let's try to capture it again. And then I think there was a third season, but I couldn't tell you. I couldn't even tell you. I honestly, I watched up until the last thing and I was like, I don't give a fuck. Right. You guys piss me off. Yeah, part of that is like creative direction of the company. I mean, I don't know, you know, to completely squander a good thing like that is, I know, is pretty. They can't leave well enough alone. There are other examples of this, too. too. Did you hear about the Abandones thing? Abandones?
Starting point is 00:32:54 It was this show, it was this big budget show. You know, Kurt Sutter. He's like the Sons of Anarchy guy. Sure. And whatever. He was doing this big massive show for Netflix called The Abandon's. Lena, I don't know how you say it. Hedy Hedy. Lena Hedy. From Gillion Anderson, Gillian Anderson from The X-Files. And they're like matriarchs in the Old West or something like that. Boring. And there's all this excitement around it, presumably. Kurt Sutter has creative differences with Netflix.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I don't know exactly what happens, but he leaves like a week before production wraps. It gets released. They cancel it like a week after. He goes on to Instagram to complain about how bad they are with their creatives or whatever. And people were still pissed. This is another thing.
Starting point is 00:33:45 People are committing to these first seasons of the show. The show ends on a cliffhanger. And it's never going anywhere. And everyone's like, what the fuck did I just invest my time in? They, there were a bunch of people who... I watched 10 hours of this shit. Yeah. I think it was loving robots, actually,
Starting point is 00:34:01 where people protested outside of the Netflix offices on Sunset Boulevard. Bring this back our show. Get a... Bring me back. Once you get back to work. Yeah, I mean, case in point, Like you said, people are not showing up for season twos. I certainly am not because I don't give a shit.
Starting point is 00:34:26 The new, the Stranger Things guys had a new show called the Burrows. Canceled. Wow. Nobody cares. Bridgeton, season four came in below the season three debut. Beef dropped 70%. Because it's like you guys, they love to just, it feels like everything is just driven into the ground. Oh, you like that?
Starting point is 00:34:45 Let's just drive it into the fucking ground. running point and the four seasons. I don't even know what the hell these shows are. They both dropped 50% into season two. Those are terrible numbers. The last Airbender, like you said, the Good Girls Guide to Murder, Man on the Inside, all of this stuff,
Starting point is 00:35:03 all their flagship titles overall declined between 30 and 70%. They gotta like poach a bunch of creatives from another studio or something because the running into the ground thing is like a bunch of like creative producers. Yeah. Oh.
Starting point is 00:35:17 And they've all vested their stock, and then they go, all right, cool, I'm out. Well, then that's not going to help. But, I mean, I'm just thinking of, I feel like HBO is famous for, they'll be like, we're doing a limited series. And then it does really well. And they're like, actually, it's coming back. It's not going to be limited. But think about White Lotus. It's like, I'm almost positive.
Starting point is 00:35:41 It was supposed to be like a one limited series thing. I think you're right. Now, what are we on? Season 4 is coming out. They're in science or something. Yeah. And it's like a cultural event every time it comes out. At this point, the,
Starting point is 00:35:55 the reputation of the White Lotus has got to be in the toilet. Oh, I'm not going there. Can you imagine if there was a prominent murder? I don't care how nice they are. I'm not going. Yeah, I'm not staying there. The four seasons had like a major-ass murder. What are you doing at the White Lotus, Paris or whatever hell they are this year?
Starting point is 00:36:11 Stop. They're going to kill you. They're big question. Netflix's big question that these big wig fat cats can't seem to figure out is, why doesn't anybody want to stick around, man? And they try to say, like we said, they try to say, oh, it's because we're, it's because we're, we're not doing it fast enough. We're not churning it out fast enough, but that's not true because other streamers have success doing that. The pit, HBO's the pit. Viewership was 50% higher than season one.
Starting point is 00:36:37 Even its worst, House of the Dragon dropped only 8% between season two and three. Damn, dude, that's crazy. The pit season two jumped that much. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's obviously those are one-off examples. Severns grew from season one to season two. That's another thing. So they do this, they do this thing where they like greenlight stuff quickly. Yeah. They look at the initial numbers and they're like, uh, fuck it.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Cancel it, cancel it. Oh, yeah. And they don't let, you know, the pit grew so much. It became this like cultural phenomenon, really. Everyone's talking about it online. They don't let that percolate at all. They just go, pull the cord. Pull the cord.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Shit sucks. People hate it. Oh, my God. Also, for the first time last year, people spent more time on YouTube than Netflix. In April, people spent 7.8% on... Wait, I don't think that's right. No, people... YouTube was smaller than Netflix?
Starting point is 00:37:36 People spent more time on Netflix, or on YouTube than Netflix last year for the first time. Are you sure? Yes. I thought Netflix, I mean, I thought YouTube has been eating everyone's lunch forever. I mean, for the first time, compared to Netflix, specifically Netflix? Yeah, they surpassed them last year. It was last year. I swear to God, man.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Also anecdotally, part of the reason why, well, not anecdotally, I guess, but part of the reason why you get these Netflix is having problems is because every time they greenlight a second season of something, the costs go up tremendously. The actors can now command more money. The crews, the unions can command more money. So they're taking big risks, which makes them all the more inclined to cut the court as soon as possible,
Starting point is 00:38:30 as soon as the data points to it not being very good. They are a lot more inclined. I mean, case in point, a friend of mine was on a TV show and she only made, you know, 80 grand for that one season. And she's like, if I were to get brought back for the second season,
Starting point is 00:38:45 they would pay me like 400 grand versus the one. That's like what they pay the president. That's like what they pay the freaking president of the United States. So Costco up, everybody gets better pay, but then, oh, if the viewerships down, yeah. I thought this was interesting. Just speaking of all the other streamers, there was an analyst at Wells Fargo who recently suggested floated the idea that Disney would be much better off and it would be way cheaper for them. to just ditch Disney Plus and license their properties
Starting point is 00:39:19 to be streamed elsewhere. Interesting. It's a great idea. I'm like, yeah, do that. The cost for all the streaming shit just be like, you know, we're not going to do. We'll partner with Netflix or whoever and it'll just all live there.
Starting point is 00:39:32 It might be a loss leader where they're just like, yeah, but we want to be able to crush companies like Netflix. We want to put Netflix out of business rather than letting them be this powerful studio that we have to go through. They might just be like, fuck it, we're Disney.
Starting point is 00:39:47 We're like, we own everything. If you want to see our shit, do it on ours. Fucking hate Disney, man. It's just such an impotent. It's just got such a weird vibe to me. My impression of Disney is such a weird. It's sort of... Well, they own everything now.
Starting point is 00:40:05 I mean, it's like... Yeah. But they Disney-ify everything. I mean, seeing that... Dr. Doom, trailer. Here you go, you fat fucking pig.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Truly. Here, eat it. Eat it up. You stupid, stupid, son of a bitch. What even? I haven't seen one
Starting point is 00:40:24 in so long and I'm like, what is this? We got everybody together. And it looks like shit. Didn't you guys do this like 10 years ago
Starting point is 00:40:34 for end game or whatever? No, but they're back. They're back. They're back. They're back. They're multivores. Yeah. We got
Starting point is 00:40:41 but even scare your guy, he's going to come back, he's going to scare everybody. It feels like people, a lot of people are out of ideas. Oh, fully out of ideas. And honestly,
Starting point is 00:40:50 what Netflix is trying to do is that's the, it almost makes you cringe a little bit. We alluded to some of it, but like, they're talking about partnerships with BuzzFeed. Oh, yeah,
Starting point is 00:41:04 for the live, for the live stuff. Condy Nast. Everybody's talking about Condy Nast. Is that really going to help people? like, fuck no, dude. They could just go on their phone, which they'd much prefer to do and just like, look at what,
Starting point is 00:41:16 cooking videos from Condi Nast or like travel videos from Condi Nast or like BuzzFeed, like top things like millennials only now. How is that going to help Netflix viewership? And then, yeah, the live channels. And I think they're throwing their hat in the ring to try to get the World Cup broadcast rights for the next one. The next one. Which that would probably be a huge boon for Netflix. probably a terrible for people who like to watch the World Cup.
Starting point is 00:41:44 As someone who's tuned into some of their forays into live sports, it sucks. It's a disaster. I watched their Nadal Al-Garaz exhibition match. Yeah. One of the worst tennis viewing matches. They'll have time to fix it. They'll work it out. I doubt it.
Starting point is 00:42:02 I think they'd have a lot of hiccups. Really? Still? Yeah. I think live sports is really difficult. And a lot of these legacy players have been doing it forever. and I think yeah, I think they'd have a tough time
Starting point is 00:42:13 doing it. They need to get, who's that guy who always does the Bill, he does the Olympics. Heter. Bill who? Hater? No, not Bill Hater, you silly Billy. No, not Bill Burr, you goof. You big silly guy? Bob Costas?
Starting point is 00:42:27 Bob Costas, yeah, love Bob Costas. I'm the silly guy, but he gave me the wrong name. Bill Simmons. Oh, shit, what was I going to say? I don't know if they, no, that's probably Spotify, who bought the ringer, but Netflix is literally buying, didn't they buy a bunch of barstool properties and shit?
Starting point is 00:42:43 They bought, well, yes, they're doing that, they're doing podcasts. They've done a few live shows. They've got to like, is it cake or not with fucking Ed Helms or something?
Starting point is 00:42:53 I mean, the only thing that they seem to have a cool factor about is comedy, but only live in L.A. once a year. Oh, yeah, when it's like the Netflix is a joke festival. But then I'm like,
Starting point is 00:43:06 they're giving anybody a comedy special now on Netflix. Even that, it seems like the calculus has changed where I think people, for a long time, for up-and-coming comedians getting a Netflix special was probably a huge deal. And now they're all like, I'd rather just put it on YouTube. Yeah. See if I can go viral on there and then it'll all see a real difference in ticket sales. Yeah. If I put it on Netflix.
Starting point is 00:43:29 It'll get scrolled past. Yeah, I'll get a check for whatever, maybe $100,000. But the thing cost me like, I mean, that's, I said maybe because that's like, case scenario, they probably spent $20,000 to $50,000 shooting the thing or something, and then they're like, what the fuck, you know, no one watched it. Dave Chappelle another
Starting point is 00:43:48 special. He can go up there and go, trans people. I'm curious what he thinks of trans people. Maybe he's changing. We got to talk about gang. We got to talk about trans people. I'm a turf. I'm a turf. He takes he takes like 15 minutes
Starting point is 00:44:04 to make one point at the end of which he just goes, laughs at his own joke. The smack in the mic into his thigh. Smoking a cigarette. Dave. Dave. He's a real... It's a bummer because obviously we all...
Starting point is 00:44:20 It's such a fun. It's the Michael Jacksonification of Dave Chappelle in that you had skinny Dave Chappelle before and you've got muscular Dave Chappelle. You had black Michael Jackson, you had white, really fucked up looking Michael Jackson. And it's like, if I were a kid now, pain it to I'd be like
Starting point is 00:44:38 this guy's the same guy as the skinny hey you know what the fuck I can't I'm not going to do that anymore it's just he's just a bummer man he just seems so bitter and angry even when he's like going after someone I dislike did you see there was like a little clip Shane Gillis did that massive
Starting point is 00:44:54 thing at the Lincoln Center or Lincoln Arena whatever the fuck it's called in Philly and Dave Chappelle comes out and he's like okay you be Joe Rogan and I'll be J.D. Vance.
Starting point is 00:45:08 And I don't even remember... I'm a huge fan. Oh, yeah, that's what he says. I'm a huge theft slur. And it's like, dude, that's like... I mean, what is even the... That is kind of his old style. Kind of.
Starting point is 00:45:20 The joke is just... I'm a huge... Gay guy. Yeah. I mean... Look, he goes after both sides. He goes after both sides. Sure. Just a little tired, a little lazy.
Starting point is 00:45:32 But, hey, he's... If anyone's earned it to him, he can do whatever. he wants. Hey guys, we want to take one last quick break to talk about your wallet. You know, that stinky thing that you've been sitting on for years and years. Before Ridge, my wallet, just a big cluster. It's just a mess. A mess. Sometimes I'd have to wrap a dang rubber band around it. I hate it sitting down. Yeah. It's horrible. But then Ridge came along and changed my life forever. It's unique, slim, modern design, super sleek, holds up to 12 cards plus cash. You know I love my credit cards.
Starting point is 00:46:11 You know I got to keep some on me. You know, I keep that thing on me. Made with premium materials like aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber, all rich products have a lifetime warranty. Warranty. This is literally the last wallet you'll ever have to buy. And that's not the only thing that they got. They got key cases, suitcases, rings. Oh, but you've got to tell them about the power bank.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Does your freaking wallet have the RFID technology? The RFID blocking technology? No, probably not. Because if not, you're leaving yourself vulnerable to digital pickpockets and you look insane right now that you don't have RFID blocking. Yeah, sometimes you also lose your wallet the worst. But the Ridge tracker card with that thing, you'll always know exactly where your wallet is before panic mode sets in. Beautiful. And every product that they got, like we said, they got the everyday carry essentials, power banks, keycases, suitcases, and rings.
Starting point is 00:47:03 I'm a huge Ridge power bank guy. That thing saves my life. I use it all the time. On the reg. No matter what you pick, Ridge has free shipping, a 99-day risk-free trial and a lifetime warranty on all their products. So what do you got to lose, huh? Starting point is 00:47:22 Just head to ridge.com and use code Bays. And you're all set. After you purchase, they will ask you where you heard about them. Please support our show and tell them our show sent you. So I personally think that Netflix's problem with the drop off in season two is many. It's multi, many things like we've talked about. The quality of the content sucks shit. It innately just feels cheap.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Everything about their properties feels forced. It feels like it feels like it's... You know it'll be a good game. What? I wish we had like a bunch of clips from content we hadn't seen from all across. across the streamers, and we had to see how accurately we could pick out which one was a Netflix original. Oh, or like...
Starting point is 00:48:08 We could do pretty well. It's just got to feel. It's just... I feel like for a moment there, for a couple years, it was just like, hey, a dude Ryan Reynolds movie is on Netflix. Oh, this time is gotta fight, you know, robots. Oh, my God. The Rock is a new movie on
Starting point is 00:48:24 Netflix. I watched... I watched the one... I watched the one where Ryan Reynolds is some kind of like, I don't even know. Like, time bending... Oh, yeah. It's all just fucking garbage. Crap. And it costs like $300 million.
Starting point is 00:48:39 And you watch it and you're like, where did that go? Chris Pratt and the fucking, I watched like the first 30 minutes of that time war thing. I don't even know what that is. The Tomorrow War. It's called The Tomorrow War. And the aliens in that movie are pretty cool, actually. When they first show the aliens, I was like, whoa, that's actually kind of fucking awesome. The VFX on it is pretty.
Starting point is 00:49:03 pretty cool, pretty terrifying. But the rest of the movie, ooh, crap. Dude, just crap. That thing's scary looking. That is a scary alien. It's a scary alien.
Starting point is 00:49:15 I'll give them that. It's a scary alien. It's scary. But yeah, they screwed up. They're doing all this crap. They're forcing it down our throats. They also, they set themselves apart with the whole binge model,
Starting point is 00:49:27 but then that became their undoing. I don't understand. Their stock could pop 20, 30% if they announce tomorrow that they are going to the episodic model. I'm surprised they haven't after all these years. It is a stubborn... It would juice their numbers so much. It's another lever for them to pull,
Starting point is 00:49:45 and I can't fathom why they would do that. I wonder how, though... I mean, also if your product... If I'm Greg penis, I'm doing that tomorrow. But if you're Greg penis and you know how trash your product is, imagine the drop-off you see after, like, episode three, when people are like... We're not publishing that data.
Starting point is 00:50:02 True. Or but fucking Nielsen Nielsen. They're getting their claws and everything. Because that's, I mean, I do feel like... Just put Ryan Reynolds in every show. It's fine. True. Hey, Bubba, come here. Go on.
Starting point is 00:50:16 No, I just feel like there's a real double-edged sword there where if your product is trash, people aren't going to stick around from week to week. Yeah, that's true. And they're going to have all the more time to really sit with it and focus on it and be like, this sucks shit ass. I feel like they really got to reckon with their own creative. creative choices here. This is caca doo-doo from a butt
Starting point is 00:50:37 kind of shit. I do think that there is potential with the always-on live channels. If they were to market them correctly, if they were to get the right talent on there. And yeah. But aren't the always-on live channels just basically
Starting point is 00:50:53 like reruns of things? It's not like... I don't know, probably. I don't know how well... I mean, is there really a huge market for that? I mean... We've got an always-on. Conday Nass channel. Come.
Starting point is 00:51:05 Content ass channel? No, Conday Nass. Oh, Conday Nass. I thought you said a content ass channel. They tried getting into games. I would watch a content ass channel. Yeah, content ass. Best butts from all around the world?
Starting point is 00:51:17 Hell yeah. Yeah, the navigation of it sucks. 3 p.m. we got the biggest butts in South America. You log on it. It's like top 10 right now. And then sometimes I get lost. I'm like, what the fuck? How do I just see what I was watching?
Starting point is 00:51:33 and it's just, I don't know, it sucks. And then they have the auto playing thing where it just starts to play the thing. I'm like, shut the fuck up, please. Don't do that. Let me turn it off. It feels a lot. They got to get us in there and we could fix this whole thing.
Starting point is 00:51:48 I feel like we could fix Netflix. I, of course, have... Women always think they could fix him. My history, man, I distinctly remember being in my bedroom when I was three years into doing stock trading stuff. And it was 2012. And famous investor, I've told the story probably, Carl Icon, I saw the headline.
Starting point is 00:52:16 Carl Icon is buying a significant stake in like hundreds of millions of dollars in Netflix. At the time, the market cap was like $5 billion. $5 billion. Netflix was valued back then. And I thought, God, that's fucking pricey, dude. that's a lot of money for Netflix, man. Or DVDs. Dang.
Starting point is 00:52:36 I mean, they were just getting started into streaming. And also the stock was near all-time highs at the time. Split adjusted, because they've done a couple stock splits since then. The stock was trading at just about a dollar a share. And today it's at like 70. A lot. I'm not great at math, but that's about 70 times more. It's so much freaking money, man.
Starting point is 00:53:00 I just. What year are we talking about? here, though. 2012. Okay. 20 freaking 12. It's a very different picture. Sure.
Starting point is 00:53:08 You know, your host dad in Spain is like, we love to pirate. It'll never work. The pirating era, were you ripping stuff? Oh, yeah. I barely got into Torrance because it kind of, I didn't quite fully understand it. I was like, how is this different than WinMX? All I know was that I needed another program for the Torrance, so it's like. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:32 But literally someone the other day was like, what did we do before Spotify? And I was like, we just fucking stole it. Yeah, Bearshare, WinamX, Napster, of course. It was so easy to just warrant that shit,
Starting point is 00:53:45 throw it in my iTunes library. Burn a CD. No, I wasn't, it would probably go on my... iPod, I guess. I burned CDs because I had my car and I had a CD changer.
Starting point is 00:53:58 Not in 2012. Yeah. Yeah, I was still, I was, no. There's no way. No, you're right. Yeah, because I was in my old Volvo and I just had the, I had the cassette adapter instead of the ox cord like you young, young bucks have. We had cassette adapter. The cassette adapter was huge.
Starting point is 00:54:15 Yeah. Did you ever use a cassette adapter? Of course. What mind bending technology? Who figured that out? How does that work? It's got to run out of tape, right? It's got to rewind.
Starting point is 00:54:26 We'll play the iPod through the tapes. Some Japanese guy probably invented it. Some guy at Sony. It's simple. The iPod will play through a tape. Who invented the cassette adapter? Let's see. The cassette adapter which allowed people...
Starting point is 00:54:42 Oh, an American engineer named Larry Schatz. Wow. Wow. Also, the original compact cassette tape itself was invented by Dutch engineer Lou Ottens and his team at Phillips. Oh, you don't even need the tape. It just goes through... a magnetic record head housed inside the fake cassette shell.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Oh, that's cool, man. An electromagnetic signal. Wow. That guy's a genius. We gotta get Larry shots on other stuff. He's probably dead. I bet he's dead as hell. That's the problem.
Starting point is 00:55:14 Larry Shots. If Larry Shots were still alive, this country would be in a whole different situation. I'll tell you that much. Well, I don't know. Oh, yeah, he did die. It looks like he died. 2021. Oh, wait, no.
Starting point is 00:55:28 He got included in the Marquise. Who's Who? The Marquis Who So's Who's Biographical Volumes. Individuals are selected on the basis of current reference value. And yeah, he was an engineer. That's pretty cool. I get Larry Shots could turn around Netflix. Wow.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Among his accomplishments, he's most proud to have developed the first microprocessor-controlled FM tuner in 1975 when he was only 25 years old. This guy's a regular who's who. This guy. God, I love Larry Shots. I'm a big Larry Shots head, yeah. I'd die for Larry Shots. I'd die for him. Here's where Jim Kramer stands.
Starting point is 00:56:04 What does he say? You know, Netflix is too hated right now. He said that their sell-off has made the stock more compelling, but investors shouldn't rush all in at once. While slowing growth in tougher competition remain concerns, Kramer says Netflix's valuation, record buybacks, and long-term growth opportunities still make the stock attractive. I am inclined to agree somewhat because their margins are expanding. They are still making more.
Starting point is 00:56:30 more money, and they do have a lot more room to make things better than they are exposed to things getting worse, I think. But it's going to take a few quarters for them to prove that, I think. It's not often that you get one of the best companies on sale. That said, you can afford to take your time with this one. If you're still a believer in Netflix, I'd put us on a small position and then gradually add to it on weakness. Yeah, it's just not the most inspiring thing. the way that the things are trending for it. I mean, it's up a little bit today.
Starting point is 00:57:08 I won't pretend the quarter was great. I won't pretend it's great. Yeah, $285 billion company, man. And they got all the competition now. They got a competition from YouTube's, Apple's, HBO, Disney, Disney, Hulu. Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime. Which one's your go-to? I'm a prime guy.
Starting point is 00:57:27 I spend most of my time on HBO. I'm just going to be honest with you or Apple TV I could only ask that you would be honest with me about this about your... HBO or Apple TV. I don't have Hulu. I have it like three times a year because I have to get it for the Australian Open,
Starting point is 00:57:42 the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. The French Open is luckily on HBO these days. I just use... I like going on Prime. I'm still shocked that Netflix doesn't offer the opportunity to buy or rent titles like Apple and Prime do. There's another revenue lever that they could pull.
Starting point is 00:58:02 It'd probably be a whole licensing nightmare for them. I don't know. They've done it before. They could figure it out. I don't know. I'm with you. YouTube does it? I mean,
Starting point is 00:58:10 they've got all this competition everywhere. Why are they letting Apple take my money every time I want to watch 1987's Roxanne starring Steve Martin and Darrell Hanna? Boy, you must love that freaking movie. Pretty great. Let's show you.
Starting point is 00:58:28 Should we switch gears? Should we talk a little bit about Iran or just jump straight to the market stuff? We should talk a little bit about Iran. I mean, it's a massive deal. It's unclear exactly what's going to happen. Who the hell knows? If you have not been paying attention, the latest is... Tensions have fully exploded again.
Starting point is 00:58:49 Iran and the U.S. are trading... I mean, it's just like day after day trading exchanges of fire. And now the Houthis have announced that they... They are entering the conflict and imposing a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. They're going to close the Bob Al-Amendab straight. Another straight you're going to have to know about that. Bob Al-Mandab. Bob-Omband-Dab.
Starting point is 00:59:19 Yeah, I mean, it's who knows what will happen? I feel like in a very strange position, I'm no expert by any means. I think when the first round of, when was this, February 28th this all started, when the, when the Strait of Hormuz was closed, I was very worried. I thought we were going to see these like massive cascading effects that really just didn't come to bear. It's, so it's extremely difficult for me to, I don't even know how to think about it anymore, but truly, same. It doesn't seem like, well, I mean, what are we talking like two and a half million or somewhere between 2 and 1,5 million and like 5 million more barrels now being taken out of the global energy supply.
Starting point is 01:00:02 Seems bad. And yet it's like everything's just continuing as business as usual, it seems. And I can't tell if it's like, is everybody just blindly walking? Are we all heading toward the edge of a cliff and we're all oblivious? Are all the analysts and everybody out there, the economists and stuff? Are they all walking toward that same cliff and they're just pretending it's not there? Are they hoping the cooler heads will prevail? I think that
Starting point is 01:00:30 was the more confusing thing too. Like back when it first started it was, it was like highly regarded analysts talking about how we're completely fucked. Like, uh, and you're going, okay, I mean, this guy is you know, it's some guy who like works
Starting point is 01:00:46 the oil futures desk at wherever and he's, this is the worst I've ever seen any... UPenn and Yale and he's like this will completely fuck the global energy supply. You're even going to know what you're not even going to recognize the world around you and you're like, okay, I imagine this guy knows and they usually don't just come on here in fearmonger. But yeah, I,
Starting point is 01:01:06 sounds like a panicking to me. He sounds like a panicking. But yeah, I don't, I tend to think that it's going to be bad. It doesn't seem like there's any real way for Trump to get out of it without just accepting a, you know, a terrible loss. And we've been through this. Houthi thing before.
Starting point is 01:01:29 There's this weird right-wing thing of people being like, okay, let's see the Houthis try. And it's like, we have. Yeah. And after October 7th, they were pretty effectively taking out ships in the Red Sea.
Starting point is 01:01:44 We launched Operation Prosperity Guardian in partnership with like... Such a cool name. At first, 10 other countries, and then like it expanded to like 20 countries. They were not able to resume, like, the same amount of ships passing through the Red Sea up until now. It was upticking, but so good luck.
Starting point is 01:02:10 Yeah, it's Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq all happening again. How the hell does Trump? Just do what he does. Just say, like, we just announce that you won, but everybody knows that you lost and just get on with it, man. But he can't do it because it's, as much as he wants to announce that it's a win, the liberal media. No, no, it's not the liberal media, dude. It's a, like, as I said, when we were going through that MOU briefly on,
Starting point is 01:02:35 it was a few weeks ago. And I said, I don't see any way this actually is accepted. When we're talking about $300 billion in reparations or whatever they want to call it, and he was trying to like squirm out of it, and they were all trying to back away from it, J.D. Vance went out and was like, well, you know, we don't know what's actually going to happen with the MOU because we're going to maybe wait and see and try to regroup and whatever. It is not only Donald Trump, I think it's difficult for any American president to get their little heinous spanked and admit it.
Starting point is 01:03:11 Yeah. I'd admit it. I have no problem. I'd be like, yeah, my honey got spanked. I didn't know the Iranians had it like that. I got my honey spanked and that one's on me. Damn Iran got hands. I'm that little boxer guy.
Starting point is 01:03:25 Yeah, exactly. Shugging. Iran got hands. And, you know, now you have the most, like, macho, front facing. We change the damn department to the Department of War. Oh, yeah. And the, and Pete Higgseth is, like, literally doing little video announcements, like. No more gay guys.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Dude, literally being like, we're going to put, we're giving these guys more tea, okay? Because they are. And that's the tea. You know, the age of cissies is over. the age of they're all pissed about like what do they call it the rules of engagement they're like
Starting point is 01:04:02 why aren't we just allowed to nuke these people so I don't know man they're the craziest people in the world I already thought before Trump that American foreign policy was deranged and so we're just in another level here I don't know how we get out of this
Starting point is 01:04:19 well why don't we round it out with some other stuff in the markets shall we hey do you like Jersey Mike Not me. Gave me diarrhea the one time I had it. You're honestly,
Starting point is 01:04:30 I've encountered like multiple people who have gotten diarrhea from Jersey mics. Yeah, and you know I hate to shame Jersey mics.
Starting point is 01:04:37 I don't know if I trust a high school kid to follow the strict protocols of food handling safety. You don't know if you trust what?
Starting point is 01:04:43 I don't trust a high school kid to handle the strict protocols of food handling safety. Especially when we're dealing
Starting point is 01:04:50 with cold cuts and temperatures and stuff. They kill someone fucked up? But aren't all those shops going to be high school kids? I don't know. A subway certainly will.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Someway certainly, yeah. Yeah, well, I mean, the cyclospora, we have no idea what's going on with that. But I did accidentally eat lettuce on Friday and I was like, dude, what am I doing? Yeah, what am I freaking doing? But I was fine. Jersey Mikes is going to IPO, though, at just under $8 billion. I don't know why they do this. $7.94 billion.
Starting point is 01:05:23 Just to round it up to fucking eight. Come on, man. I'm just glad Danny DeVito is getting that fat show. Oh, yeah, man. Oh, my God. You think he's making out like a bandit? No, I bet he took cash instead of stock. Come on.
Starting point is 01:05:37 Because they're a private company up until this point. If I'm his agent, I'm going, take the cash. Danny, baby. Danny, take the cash, man. Danny, take the cash. And meanwhile, you've probably seen the headlines. I wish it was a joke. And I keep waiting.
Starting point is 01:05:50 I keep waiting for someone to step in and say, this is wrong. we shouldn't allow this. But Trump media, ticker symbol, DJT, they are selling access to his truths. You don't think we should allow this? No, I kind of don't. Honestly, I kind of don't think it's a good idea. You don't think we should give people special access who pay for...
Starting point is 01:06:11 No, no, to market moving information that comes directly from Donald Trump that he's charging $100,000 a month for to these investment banks and whatnot. No, I just don't think it's a good idea. I think that it sets poor precedent. I think that it invites a lot more market manipulation than we've already seen. And it's a pay-to-play kind of thing. Who knows? I mean, if you can pay $100,000 for the access, how much more can you pay for influential posts?
Starting point is 01:06:43 Yeah. Maybe say something, you're $500,000. So maybe say something nice about. The fraud is obviously mind-boggling. There was a great chart. I wish I saved it. There was a great chart someone had of the past presidents and their, their like wealth creation.
Starting point is 01:07:01 And it was basically, you know, like, I think it started at Obama or maybe, oh, no, it started at Bush. Obama now. Bush made a bunch of money from the owning of the Texas Rangers. Obama, his wealth shot up because of a lot of... Speaking. Book sales and speaking events. And Biden's like hardly went up.
Starting point is 01:07:22 that sleepy-ass deep was just like, we're supposed to make money on this? Yeah. You're getting rich. Come on, Jack. And they have it in different colors because it's like, you know, this is just like from incidental,
Starting point is 01:07:36 like, okay, Obama put a book out and it sold way more after he became president. Trump's had that one as well. And it was like, you know, still quite big, but his real estate holdings, his whatever, hotel holdings, whatever the business.
Starting point is 01:07:53 and stocks. But then it was a whole different color and it's like a massive line of just basically fleecing American people. Crypto, stock trades, insane deal-making. He's smart, man. He's smart. That's because he's smart. You're just mad that he's smart. I mean, that's what someone,
Starting point is 01:08:09 a supporter, I imagine, would say. They either just deny it outright or they don't care or they think that he's smart. Bubba, can you please? I mean, come on. He's smart and we're stupid. And that's why he's where he is. And then let's see, what else?
Starting point is 01:08:26 SpaceX is down a trillion dollars in market cap. Dude, you really called it. I'm not going to say that I called it, but I fucking called it. You called it with the Rivian thing. It's starting to look Rivian-esque. Oh, yeah. And they still have a lot more to go. They got a lot more to go.
Starting point is 01:08:38 I don't know, $123 and $54. They are down 23% from the top. What did it IPO at? It was 160 and then spike to 185 roughly. I think it even went higher than that. I think this chart just sucks. But market cap is still at $1.63 trillion. It's such a pathetic...
Starting point is 01:09:03 I mean, it's just... You know what I haven't seen is a lot of people complaining online that they bought in on this and are getting hosed. Because I would hope that some people are smarter than that. Kathy Wood sure bought some because she's a fucking... I don't understand.
Starting point is 01:09:20 She bought like... They show the photo of her doing her. her like smart thing and it's like she bought $35 million worth of SpaceX at like the day one. I cannot wrap my mind around that woman and how
Starting point is 01:09:35 stupid she is. Blind face. As a money manager. I guess. Yeah, blind face. I guess this means... There she is. There she is. A SpaceX is worth a lot of money. I think it's worth more than two trillion dollars. I'm Kathy Wood. I'm going to buy more. In fact. I guess this means that we no longer have a first trillionaire, which is at least a small win we can...
Starting point is 01:09:57 A small win we can... We can all celebrate. Hang our hat on. A pop culture crossover, we can all celebrate. Yeah. Unless you're a big Elon head, then I guess you're not celebrating. You like, you sleep soundly knowing... And they still have earnings around the corner, which means more stock, more shares are going to get released into the public float, the trading. So...
Starting point is 01:10:19 What impact do you think that we'll have, if any... It'll be dilutive. It'll be a lot more shares out there that people are just going to dump. Insiders, if you're an insider, you've been waiting for this IPO, and you are on paper worth millions of dollars. And now you've seen it on paper go down. Are you going to sell the first chance you get? Or are you going to hold on and hope that it bounces back? But I thought this one was like, didn't they change the rules where insiders were allowed to sell like pretty immediately or no?
Starting point is 01:10:46 I think a very small amount. Okay. Yeah, because only 5% of shares are freely tradable. And then I just thought... And you think they're all just going to dump. I think they're going to dump. Yeah, wouldn't you? I would for sure.
Starting point is 01:11:01 Your first opportunity at liquidity? A liquidity event? I for sure would. But there's a lot of like Elon true believers. Yeah, that's true. That's true. And Jensen Wong's jacket sold for a million dollars. I don't know how the hell that happened. And I like this.
Starting point is 01:11:18 Warren Buffett said that Bill Gates's behavior was distasteful. in regards to Epstein. Yeah, it was just tasteful. He should have just gotten Cherry Coke and McDonald's with me, but instead he wanted to get massages from Russians, prostitutes. So that's a terrible, Warren Buffett.
Starting point is 01:11:35 He's going to be dead soon. I just know it. I give him until the end of the year. They showed me he was interviewed and he was wearing a t-shirt. He just looked like, oh, that's his retirement. He switched out the suit for a t-shirt.
Starting point is 01:11:47 And he did pledge to get rid of all of his wealth by like 2034. He's not giving any to his kids? I believe, like, a small... Enough. Enough. Yeah. But he's given away all his Berkshire Hathaway stock over like $150 billion worth.
Starting point is 01:12:05 Are we getting any? I don't know. I'd have to check. It'd be cool if he gave us some. He should have like a thing where you could write a letter and be like... Ooh, yeah. Here's how I would spend the money. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:17 I'm a cool guy. Yeah. I've been a good guy. Here's why I deserve one show of Berkshire Hathaway. I sometimes think about that where I'm like, I don't think it's the worst. I wouldn't say, I don't know if it's the biggest waste of time. If I, like, selected, I don't know, 50 to 100 guys. Max it out, 100 guys.
Starting point is 01:12:39 Started writing letters. Like, hey, I want money. Like, from a really rich guy. I think that that is actually a really good idea. And I bet like, I feel like one out of 100 might be like, yeah, here's a hundred bucks. It's like that guy, remember the kid who used to... Invoice companies?
Starting point is 01:12:59 No, no. He used to annoy Sam Altman. He would, like, every time Sam Altman would tweet, he would say something, he would, like, reply and go, yo, I need you to buy me a PS5, like da-da-da-da-da. And Sam Altman at first found it very annoying, and then started to find it kind of charming. And then was like, okay, tell me what your address is or whatever I'm saying. And he bought him a PS5? I'm almost five.
Starting point is 01:13:23 Can you like, like, Sam Altman? I'm going crazy that I can't remember if this actually happened. I hope I didn't dream it or something. There is no credible public record or official news confirming the Open AI CEO, Sam Alton, bought a PlayStation 5 for a child. This is crazy. Well, folks, we got a lot to talk about in the bonus. Probably going to talk about the Odyssey, the Odyssey Culture War.
Starting point is 01:13:51 I found something that really pissed me off. It's the LA Cool guy. talk about the LA cool guy and how I just cannot compare. All sorts of stuff. Robbie Williams. I got one thing in here just says LOL. I don't remember what that is, but it's probably really good.
Starting point is 01:14:09 So, we got to talk about the World Cup. We're going to talk about the World Cup. Mundial. Benitamilshow.com. Head over there. I got to find this thing, too. It's driving me nuts.
Starting point is 01:14:24 Oh, I got to find this thing. No, no, no, the same Almond thing. The same Almond thing. Yeah, sure, Grandpa. Hey, leave, say Grandpa in the comments. No. Grandpa in the comments.
Starting point is 01:14:34 You can call me, Grandpa, that's fine. But if you are someone who knows what I'm talking about, I'm like, I could see the article in my head. It was, it's, I'm going to find it. He's going to find it, folks. Maybe it wasn't Sam Altman. It was some. Maybe it wasn't a PlayStation 5.
Starting point is 01:14:47 Maybe it was an Xbox, uh, maybe it was Xbox 1. Maybe it was a gaming PC. I think it was a gaming PC. Yes. Whoa! He bought him a steam machine? I'd be dead ass if the console... Man, I hate dead ass.
Starting point is 01:15:03 Oh, yo, dead ass. Oh, dead ass. Hey, are you... Do you think this guy looks gay, dead ass? Someone bullied Sam Altman into buying them a GPU... Wow. Someone bullied Sam Altman into buying them a GPU for their gaming PC. This guy just randomly asked Sam Altman to buy him an RTX 5090 and actually received it.
Starting point is 01:15:27 Wow. He said, Sam, you, me, the Amalfi Coast, me, double for net on the rocks, club soda's taste, you, one delightfully sweet, bitter negroni stirred 2.2.9 billion revolutions counterclockwise, one for each hertz of the
Starting point is 01:15:41 Nvidia 5090 and the gaming PC you will buy and ship to my house. And so he'd been doing stuff like this forever, and then Sam Altman finally retweeted it and goes, okay, this was funny, send me your address and I'll send you a 5090. That's pretty cool, guys. Oh, that was, I'm so glad I got it in
Starting point is 01:15:57 of the wire because I just didn't want to be still call him grandpa no you can't you actually have lost all ability to call me grandma at this grandpa because I was right you were wrong um all right guys and you all doubted me uh we'll see you the bonus thanks for tuning in
Starting point is 01:16:13 let us know if you use Netflix still do you drop off after season two what was your favorite thing oh that stuff maybe we'll get picked for the coming of the week next week and we love you bye coming up on this week's episode of Ben and Emile Show.com. Lequelli Monkey, a new species that was discovered in the Congo
Starting point is 01:16:31 rainforest. How the fuck was this monkey hiding out for this long? That's what I don't understand. You know how exciting it's got to be to be like, wow, I fucking found a good. No monkey! No monkey! Holy fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, new monkey. Did you ever watch the movie Congo? The Wild Thornberries? Nigel.
Starting point is 01:16:49 Yeah, I watched the movie Congo. Guerrilla. It's like Girl Dinner Diaries, Reddit. No? You ever just like hit Popular? No. I don't ever hit popular. I just, I have home. Right, which, which follows the like, the, I don't know what this is, but it's like, if I hit, okay, if I've gone through like one or two pages of mine, which is all just my, the Reddit's I subscribe to. So whatever, I'm like, I'm like, what is all of Reddit talking about? Just out of curiosity.
Starting point is 01:17:22 Yeah. And this, I don't know what's going. I don't know what. Is it women? posting for the feral plates and the feral thoughts post your unhinged meals relationships spirals late night thoughts soft moments braggy moments so it sounds like these are women at their worst i see are yes it's always like the saddest caption like um my husband finally left me for her and then it's like the worst meal i've ever seen it's like cup noodles my dad has been married three times to my grandma to my other grandma and eventually to my mom a queen bee there you go Bees lifespan depends on his role. A honeybee queen, well, a queen lives for two to three years.
Starting point is 01:18:03 Summer worker bees live for four to six weeks. Wait, who gets to have sex with the queen? I don't know. Whoever's got the coolest bee penis. No, no, I need to know. Who mates with the queen? Which bee mates with the queen? Don't look at me like that, but.
Starting point is 01:18:19 The queen be mates with the drones. Oh, wow. Dude, you get to go make honey. She takes special mating flights up flying. You-hoo, boy. I'm going to mate in midair with 10 to 20 of you guys. Tragically, mating is fatal for the males. That's fine.
Starting point is 01:18:37 They're just going, hoo-hoo-hoo. What a nice life. I've got four to eight weeks to just collect pollen. Whoa, dude. The queen collects and stores all the sperm she needs in a special organ called the spermathica. She uses the sperm to fertilize eggs over her entire three to, so she just goes out, collects a bunch of it.
