And what a night we had, the Jays have made it to the World Series for the first time in what, 32 years? 32 years. 32 years. It's amazing. And we will be talking about that in just a minute. But first, we're going to try something new today. As part of Small Business Week, we've spoken to business
Starting point is 00:01:52 owners about successes and failures. And today, we'll have an entrepreneur and serial investor Michael Hyatt in studio at 1115 to answer questions about your business. So text us at 416-870-6400 with info about your business so that he can answer any and all questions that come his way. All right. Let's talk about last night. It was a special, special night. I got to say, what I love the most is my sons had so much fun at the game the night before
Starting point is 00:02:22 that they wanted to watch the whole game with me. And they were so excited. I think I've got real, honest to goodness, baseball fans. It's not that they just wanted to see a plate on a school night. No, no, I'm telling you, man, they really loved it. They loved it. I'm so, so happy. The, let's, should we, should we listen to the moment?
Starting point is 00:02:43 Yeah. Let's listen to the moment that is going to live forever in the hearts of Blue J fans. One, oh pitch. Swing in a fly ball, left field and deep, a Rosarina. turns gone. A Springer, Dinger, four, three Blue Jays in the bottom of the seventh. And thank you to the fan 590 for that. We appreciate it. All right, so George Springer, the hero, the goat. The Springer, Dinger. Let's listen to how he felt after hitting that home run. No, I blacked out. A hundred percent. I don't, I don't really
Starting point is 00:03:26 remember. I just remember kind of the aftermath and kind of the feeling, just unbelievable feeling. And, you know, because it's almost, now it's like a tradition, right? We got to hear, we got to hear from. Well, let's go to the guy who caught the ball first. Oh, right. Yes. That's, that's part and parcel of home runs all the time now. Someone hits it, someone catches it, and we talk to the guy who caught it. So let's listen to the fan who caught the home run ball, Michael Angeletti. I was actually texting my cousin telling him I was front row, about to catch the home run ball to leave me alone. And I dropped the phone, caught the ball, and here we are.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Feel blessed to be a part of Canadian sports history. I'm a Toronto sport fanatic. I love all our teams, especially the Blue Jays, wishing him the best in the fall classic. Georgie boy, I'm wearing your jersey, just so you know. I mean, this guy, this guy's a legend. Was he telling his cousin that he was. before Springer hit the ball or after, and then he dropped the phone?
Starting point is 00:04:31 I think he was talking to him and then you heard the crack of the bat he's like, oh, it's a home run and I'm going to catch it. Yeah. Congratulations to him. Congratulations to the Jays. Congratulations to Toronto.
Starting point is 00:04:42 This is a huge deal for this city. And, well, John Schneider, let's be honest. Every time he takes to the mic after a big celebration, for a big celebration, he gets a little blue with his language. It's very, is it a BS or is it real?
Starting point is 00:04:56 But he does it late at night, as you say, when the networks can get away with that. Yeah, when you can swear on TV. Exactly. Let's listen to the manager who hopefully is going to take this team all the way. Fellas. American League East champions. American League Division champions. American League champions.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Wait. First time in 32 years, the World Series comes back to this city and this country. I'm so proud of every one of you. Enjoy every single moment of this tonight because you guys earned the f*** out of it. Let's go. Let's go. God, I love this team.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I was late to loving this team, but I love this team. Yeah, and Dave, our board up here just mentioned, reminded us about how they did put a disclaimer on the screen saying, there may be some coarse language. I remember looking at that and said to my wife, no, there will be. You know, it's interesting. I forgot that the Mariners and the Jays entered the league at the same time.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Yeah, 1977. And the Jays have won two World Series, and the Mariners have yet to go to a World Series. So they are 49 years old. Yeah, 49 seasons, and it's the longest drought for them, 49 years and counting. Despite, let's be honest, if you look at the talent that the Jays have had over the years, and you look at the talent that the Mariners have had, you can argue
Starting point is 00:06:26 that the Mariners have had bigger, better, like a bigger, better roster. Yeah. Well, no, they've had some of the, some of the players that they've developed
Starting point is 00:06:36 are, they call them, I guess, inside Hall of Fame guys. Yeah. The guys who are like, Ken Griffey, A-Rod,
Starting point is 00:06:44 Randy Johnson, Ichiro. Yeah, those guys are. They're, their first ballot Hall of Famers. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Robbie Alamar and Roy Halliday were fantastic, Hall of Famers. but these other four guys are, you know, in Pantheon. And look, what we want to tell you, if you are a fan of the Blue Jets, enjoy this moment, enjoy it, wear your jerseys with pride. This doesn't come along that often. You can kind of take that advice for a lot of things in life.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Just enjoy the things that are in front of you. Yeah. And focus on those things because you might think, oh, I'll have this again next year or that next year. No. they don't look you've got there are players on the blue jays who have been in the league for over 10 years and they've never whiffed at a world series you got kevin gossman he's debuted in 2013 chris basset 2014 bench coach don maddingly this is the best one 43 years in baseball so donnie baseball finally getting to a world series he never went to a world series as a player
Starting point is 00:07:48 14 years as a player 12 as a manager 17 as a coach never, ever gone to a World Series. This is the first for him. And he would have been, he was on track to be a Hall of Fame player, but he hurt his back. Yeah, yeah. And also, but also the Yankees weren't great back then.
Starting point is 00:08:03 No, no, they were in sort of flux. But, I mean, it does. It's a weird sport. You can get these, you can be the best player in the world. Like Mike Trout plays, is a player who goes with the Los Angeles Angels. Yep.
Starting point is 00:08:16 He's going to be, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer as well. And he has played, I think, three postseason games in his career and that's it. Yeah, exactly. And they all say the same thing. They would give all the accolades away to win a World Series. They would. I mean, and Kevin Gossman and Keith Bassett are both starters. They pitched last night in relief because they wanted, they would do anything to be able to get to a World Series. Well, let's talk about like three of the
Starting point is 00:08:42 players who had the most games played without ever going to a World Series. Rafael Palmero. He played for Texas. He played for, yeah, a lot of team. Texas is probably the Yeah, 2,831 games, 20 seasons, no World Series. And then the next two on the list, very telling, Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichero. Both Seattle Mariners. 2,671 and 2,653 games without ever going to a World Series. Can you imagine how Mariners fans feel today? They were eight outs away.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Yeah. That's it. They were eight outs away. But when you're playing, listen, the Jays know how to win at home, right? They do, but it's also how just one swing of the bat. The Js just didn't have any luck last night. And then they got a couple of hits. And all it took was, and this reliever came in,
Starting point is 00:09:32 I hope he's not derided too much, because the guy was essential to Seattle this year, this guy, Bizarro, and it just takes one swing. It's one moment. That's what's so insane about baseball. You remember when, what's the Canadian who plays for the Mariners? Oh, Josh Naler. Remember when he, like,
Starting point is 00:09:49 from Mississauga? When he interferes. with the throw by jumping and getting hit in the head. You can see it on his face. He knew that he. Yeah. Yeah, he knew. See, when I saw that, I was like, oh, that's no good.
Starting point is 00:10:01 That's no good. But baseball, you tried to do those little things. You have to do those. It did feel like it was a reaction. I don't think he was trying to do it, but he ended up. You think he tried? I think so. Yeah?
Starting point is 00:10:12 Oh, yeah, he did. He jumped up in the air. I don't know what I would do if someone was throwing a ball at my head. Slide. You slide. That's what happened. Everybody always slide. Yeah, good.
Starting point is 00:10:21 He jumped in the air and he was like, yeah, good point. He was trying to do what he did. They used to do that in baseball a lot more, like sliding to take out the second baseman. They don't do that anymore. All right, well, up next, we're going to take your calls on all things Blue Jays. Is there a weight that's lifted off your back? Are you making the most of this moment knowing full well? It could be another 32 years before the Blue Jays make it back to the World Series.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Do you remember the last one? We want to hear from you. Welcome back to the Ben Mulroney show. We are basking in the glory of the Blue Jays, making it to the World Series, and we want to hear from you at 416-8-870-6400 or 1-3-8-2-25 talk. Tell us whatever is on your mind about this team. Irene, welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Morning. How are you? Well, how are you? I'm pretty good. Hey, yes, I'm very happy about the Jays, the Blue Jays. but maybe they help this in one way or at this point because we're going through our rough waters through our friend, our relatives,
Starting point is 00:11:29 cross the border, the Americans. Yep. I just want to give heads up and let a lot of the people don't know this, but 80% our players from the Blue Jays are Americans. Yeah. So please. Well, they are American, but they play for us.
Starting point is 00:11:48 They play for Toronto. But when you talk to people, oh, I can't stand Americans. I can't stand Americans. Well, that's our Js and they are Americans. That's a very good point. That's a very good point. They are great ambassadors. And we, that's a very good point, Irene.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Thank you very much. Welcome. All right. Let's go to Verinder in Surrey, B.C., welcome. Hi, Ben. How are you? I'm good. I'm good.
Starting point is 00:12:12 So how old were you when the Jays won in 93? I was eight years old. My friend was a baseball fan. I went to his house. of a outgoing McDonald's that night. And it was an awesome night when Joe Carter won the home run. I'm also living in Mississauga when the Raptors won the championship. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:27 And I was in Vancouver at the 2011 Vancouver Conucks a Riot. So I think it's best to, you know, always tell Toronto, appreciate what you have. I'm from Vancouver. We've had more Stanley Cup rise to Stanley Cup wins. Hey, have you gone to bed yet, Verinder? It's like 6 a.m. there. I'm getting ready for work. I'm getting ready for work.
Starting point is 00:12:44 But an even bigger win is if you become mayor of Toronto. Oh, yeah. God bless you, buddy. Thank you, my friend. You take care. Have a great day of work. Mark, welcome to the show. Hey, how's it going? I'm good. So you can't remember 93. Why not? Well, I can remember how I felt and the experience, but I don't remember exactly where I was. That's all. See, I remember where I was. I was watching on TV. I was in boarding school. I was watching on TV, hating the fact that my brother was at the game. I was just, I was seething, watching from a very far away as I knew he was there, witnessing.
Starting point is 00:13:19 it. I think of a person that's going to be jealous. That's a really good reason. I was just going to say that there's been this camaraderie and mutual respect between the players that is just so noticeable and it makes a big difference because in a league that has focused so much on the long ball, that hasn't been the J's specialty. They've been absolutely superb at never whiffing. They just don't strike out. It's incredible. Yeah, it seems like they always connect. right, even if they fly out. They always connect with the ball.
Starting point is 00:13:54 They do, absolutely, and they also connect with each other. And it's just, I don't know. There's just something about that, and I think it's made a big difference. Well, thank you very much, Mark. I appreciate it. Go, Jays, go. You bet. Cheers.
Starting point is 00:14:05 All right. Yvonne, welcome to the Ben Mulroney show. Good morning. How are you? I'm excited. I'm just crazy excited. Now, have you been a fan for a very long time? all my life.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Vince Carter hit it out of the ballpark. Back then, I still have my collectibles from back then. And I'm like, last night when I was watching it, I'm like, reality hit me to say, none of these players was even born when this happened. This is like, wow, and I'm going to get double run. Like, I saw it in 93 and I'm going to see it again. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:14:38 It's amazing. And listen, don't forget, in 1993, that was the last time any Canadian team won anything, right? With the exception of the Raptors, they won. But prior to that, That was the last year The Montreal Canadiens won The Stanley Cup
Starting point is 00:14:53 And no Canadian teams have won since then So this is a big deal But I'm a baseball fan I always love the Blue Jays From way back then The team Vince Carter and the boys Every time I'm like Here's another home run
Starting point is 00:15:05 But that was just amazing And I can't remember The other guy named That always stealing the bases Almar Almar! Yeah He was amazing amazing. I just like once he got he's on the base, I'm like, okay, we're going to get another
Starting point is 00:15:22 point. We're going to get another point because he's going to stop the stealing the bases. And I was like, wow. Yvonne, thank you very much. Yeah, okay. Bye, bye. Sebastian, welcome to the Ben Mulroney show. Good morning, Ben. How are you doing? I'm doing great today. How are you? I'm good. I got my Tony Fernandez jersey on, buddy, from back in the day. Old school. Hey, I was 16 years old when they won in 92, 993. I was singing karaoke. I'm going to give you two guesses on what the song might have been.
Starting point is 00:15:53 Any song that you did karaoke to in 93? Yeah, 93, man. What, life is a highway? Well, Tom Petty. Oh, no, that was Tom Cocker. We were doing Love Shack, baby. Love Shack, baby. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:10 When I think back at how different the world was in 93, right? Like, no smartphones, no social media. Yeah, yeah. If you want to drive anywhere, you needed a map, like an actual paper map. Yeah. All right. Hey, thank you, my friend. You take care.
Starting point is 00:16:24 All right. Marcy. All right. Who do we have next? I think we got Mark. Mark, welcome to the show. Hey, good morning, Ben. How are you?
Starting point is 00:16:31 I'm good. So you've got a story for us about 93. Oh, my God. Yeah. My wife and I, we were, well, my wife was having our first baby. And she was nine months. So she was due any time. We were watching the, we were watching Joe Carter.
Starting point is 00:16:46 she stood up and she screamed after the home run and jumped and her water broke and so three hours later we were at the hospital so your baby waited until the end of the game yeah exactly that is amazing water water broke and I thought you know if the baby we didn't know what the gender you know we thought okay female male it doesn't matter as long as they're healthy if it would have been a boy his name was going to be joe 100% and and what you have? Exhawn her. Her name is Natalia, but I still love her. And is she a baseball fan at all? She's a huge baseball fan. There you go.
Starting point is 00:17:23 It's in a last night watching with us. Oh, good for you. Good for you. All right. Thanks so much, Mark. And all the best to Natalia. Cheers. All right. Let's go to Joe. Joe, welcome. Ben, I can't top that last guy, but I remember that home run with Joe Carter. It was amazing. I thought it was amazing for the city. everybody was so jubilant.
Starting point is 00:17:46 And the other thing that I did want to say so that everybody is aware of this, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is Canadian. He was born in Canada. As you may know, and his father played for the Exposal, and he was born in Montreal. That's right.
Starting point is 00:18:03 I forgot about that. You're right. We got a great Canadian on that team. You know what? I totally forgot that. Thank you for reminding us. I appreciate it, Joe. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Okay, Ben. Thanks. All right. Let's say how to Ken. Ken, happy Blue Jay's Day. Happy Blue Jay's Day. Big day, man. I just want to say, you know, never count out the 7-8-9. Without the 7-8-9, we don't win this series. Yeah. No one really talks about Ernie Witt and Schneider. I mean, the big boys are the big boys, right?
Starting point is 00:18:37 Ernie Clement, you mean? Yeah, Ernie Clement. Ernie Witt was back in the day. Oh, back in the day, but his playing right now is unbelievable. Oh, yeah. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. You're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:18:50 The unsung hero that's actually we're singing his praises these days. Thank you so much, Ken. We appreciate it. Thanks. Have a good day. Go Blue Jays. Lisa. Welcome to the Ben Mulroney show.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Hello. Hello. Welcome. Hi, Dan. How are you today? I'm well. So you remember Game 7 back in 93. I remember Game 7 in 1993.
Starting point is 00:19:11 I was very fortunate in the 90s to work for a very large sporting goods company. I was able to see a lot of the playoff games, a lot of the World Series games. And it was coming down to game seven. My boss had tickets, two tickets for game seven. And we won't even know that we thought we were going to win in game six. So he says, do you want these tickets, Lisa? And I said, yeah, sure, I'll take them. So me and another colleague from work were going to go.
Starting point is 00:19:37 And then on Friday afternoon on 4 o'clock, my boss turned around. to me, goes, I need those tickets back. I said, what? Why? He goes this, because if they make it to game seven, we got to give it to the buyer from Toys R Us. He's coming up here. So, you're kidding me. He goes, nope, got it to give him
Starting point is 00:19:55 the tickets. No problem. Handing them over. Guess what happens? They make it to game seven. And I watched at home, Joe Carter, make the final home run. Hey, at least you saw it. Lisa, thank you so much. It was heartbreaking, Ben.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Brett, real quick, give me your story. Okay, story. Ten seconds. In 93, we went down to the sky dome to take some flags off the light post, right? While you're down there, I looked over, two of my buddies had scaled the side of the sky dome and stole the 10 foot by 30 foot flag off the side of the sky dome that said, Toronto Blue Jays, 1993 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, but they put three over top of the two, and they had cut off the Atlanta Braves, and they sewed on the Philadelphia Phillies,
Starting point is 00:20:41 the bomb of that flag. And do you still have that flag? I think one of the guys still has it in a trunk somewhere. In a trunk? Oh, geez, in a trunk. He's got to take. I'm going to contact them. I still have a bunch of the little flags.
Starting point is 00:20:53 We have like 30 of the little flags. They're on the light post around the sky. I don't. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, thank you much. Thanks so much, my friend. And thanks to everybody.
Starting point is 00:21:00 All right. Don't go anywhere. More on the Ben Mulherney show when we come back. This podcast is sponsored by Better Help. Wherever you find us, how, you enjoy the show, we say thank you and we hope that you enjoy every second with us because we enjoy every second with you. All right, I think one of the issues in this city that everyone has an opinion on is traffic. Anytime we talk traffic on this show, the phone lines light up because everyone has an opinion and the streets are clogged congestion is awful. This is stuff we know. However, the city seems to be doing something about it. They will be blitzing. downtown. Toronto police are launching a three-month rush hour enforcement blitz starting on Monday. This week or next week? Next week. Next Monday. And the focus is the downtown core. Bloor to Front
Starting point is 00:23:57 Street, Bathurst to Jarvis. So a big rectangle right downtown from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day. They're going to be targeting no stopping, no parking, blocking the box, everything that jam. up traffic and the fines will be substantial. If you break those rules, you're going to get a fine of up to $615 and your car could be towed if you're blocking lanes. They're also going to crack down on speeding, illegal turns, red light running and distracted driving. The one thing I'm noticing that they're not doing here is educating pedestrians on what their responsibilities are. Can you imagine those conversations though? Because most people, they either have earbuds in or They don't want to, oh, yeah, no, but just explaining to them that when they see the hand flashing, they have to, if they're not already in the road, they have to let cars go by.
Starting point is 00:24:51 It's no longer their place to be walking, because that's one of the biggest problems, especially around like Union Station and places like that. Yeah, people just walk out. Yeah, they just walk out. And if you're in your car, you're trying to take a left or right, you can't get south or north. Or you're wanting to turn right, and one of those delivery guys on the, on the scooters pulls up right in front of you. and he's still on the road, but he's next to the sidewalk so you can't turn. Well, this will be interesting, too. Are they going to crack down on the scooters and e-bikes?
Starting point is 00:25:20 Like, what's, or is this just cars? I think this is just cars, but I would hope that they would. I mean, they say it's a blitz, but I mean, you can get those guys on fines every day of the week. It's not hard. Oh, yeah. No, but, like, they don't know what they're doing either. They don't know that they have to yield if I'm already taking my right-hand turn. No, well, they haven't taken the driver's test, likely.
Starting point is 00:25:42 I mean, you don't know for sure. I'm sure some of them have, but a lot of them are just riding scooters, and there's no driver's test for that. Yeah, look, I think this is a good idea, but I can already tell it's half-baked. It's already half-big because we have to share the road. This is not just a car issue. It's a car issue when sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists
Starting point is 00:26:05 and e- scooters and delivery drivers, all that stuff. And unless you're attacking the problem from every side, you're not going to solve anything. This is about getting traffic moving because the congestion is so, so bad. And I'm sure they will. Like I love, I think this will work. I'm so happy when I go downtown and I see a traffic cop. Yeah. Because I know he is going to direct people to do exactly what he wants to keep traffic moving. But there's also the fact, when they pull somebody over, how long is this stop? Five minutes, let's say? Oh, yeah. You pull somebody, say you're pulling somebody over in Adelaide. Now you're blocking the right lane for five minutes.
Starting point is 00:26:39 that creates a massive traffic jam for blocks and blocks behind you. Shouldn't they like do it near a gas station or something so you can pull into the gas station? It's wherever the person stops. And that's the thing. So there's a good and bad to this. I mean, yeah, but my sense is as far as the cars go, who'll be ticketed, you're going to see a lot of tickets front loading this program. And then after a couple of weeks, a couple of days maybe,
Starting point is 00:27:03 there's going to be a lot less of it. You'd hope so. So what's the biggest problem do you think? The no stopping, the no parking, the blocking the box. Well, the blocking the box is annoying. It doesn't happen as much as I think people suspect it might, at least for me, in my experiences, I get annoyed with somebody blocking the box once every couple of weeks. I had, I was on Eglinton a couple of days ago, and I had a bus block the box, and there was construction as well, so nothing was moving. I missed two
Starting point is 00:27:32 lights because of it. Yeah. Sat there for two lights. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I think it's the no stopping in the parking. People parking when they're not supposed to park? This is going to impact Uber drivers. Yep. The skip the dishes people. Yeah. All those sort of delivery guys who stop to pick people up. Yeah. Well, look, but that's why
Starting point is 00:27:51 so many of them are on scooters now because they park on the sidewalk. Yeah, but what about the Uber drivers? They can't park on the sidewalk picking people up. Uber drivers are going to probably tell whoever they're picking up to meet them on a side street. I mean, that's what they should do. They should do. I doubt that's going to happen because people don't
Starting point is 00:28:07 think about that sort of thing. Look, the goal is to reduce congestion, improve flow during peak times, but look, if you don't, if you don't, like I said before, if you do not address pedestrians, if you do not address cyclists, then you're not really attacking the problem. Yeah. Well, eventually, the real thing that's going to hopefully fix some of this congestion issues, is when they have the Ontario line bill. Yeah. Similar to the Egglinton line, which is 15 years in counting. And you know, watching the Blue J game last night, they put together that stage to hold 100 people on a stage in minutes, right? And they're able to do that in minutes, yet we can't build a subway in 15 years? Buddy, in two years, in back-to-back years,
Starting point is 00:28:51 as soon as the season was done, they went in and started renovating Rogers Center. And they did everything on time and on budget. Yeah. I've never seen anything like it. Congratulations to that. Private enterprise. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, give us a call. 416-870-6400 or 1-8-2-25 talk. Are you excited about this blitz? Are you happy it's happening? Do you think that drivers need to wise up and start driving a little more smartly? Or do you think that unless you're attacking the problem with pedestrians, with cyclists, with delivery scooters, then you're not really attacking the problem.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Give us a call. 416-8-60-400 or 1-3-8-225 talk. Or this question, are they going to catch you? because you're one of those people. Because you know you are. You know you do it. Not I'm not saying you. I'm saying whoever it is out there.
Starting point is 00:29:41 You know you do these things. There are certain things that I think everybody does. Like I take rolling stops. You know, if the light turns red, I kind of take my right hand turn without fully stopping because I know that the cars to my left are not going to move very fast. Yeah. And you want to be able to beat the Russia traffic. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Correct. Correct. Because you got to take your wins where you can. Yeah, listen, I've told you, one of my biggest pet peeves is that pedestrians do not understand their role and responsibility when sharing the street. When it comes to cars trying to cross an intersection by taking a left or a right, they have no idea that when the hand starts flashing, they no longer have the right of way. Nobody knows that. And until they learn that, there are going to be a long. lot of problems on the street uh let's take gregg gregg welcome the show hi i ben how are you
Starting point is 00:30:40 good thank you yeah i don't think that's gonna help anything it's gonna congest the road even more when a police officer stop on the road people the road is much more congested i think there's other alternative and that that your co-host or whatever his name is uh sorry i don't remember oh my my producer you're producer he made a point it's not done and then if it does stop for that short time to see if this is going to happen again after that. So what's the difference? Well, you don't think putting traffic cops there, directing traffic is going to make things move just a little bit faster?
Starting point is 00:31:09 Yeah, the guy who does the directing on traffic, yes, they do. However, whenever whoever is going to, like the Uber drivers, like your producer mentioned, they're going to have a problem because a lot of them don't know these side street. The people don't know the side street. So it's going to cause a problem for people who are pedestrians. It's going to cause a problem for drivers. There are alternatives that can be taken. I don't have enough top of my head.
Starting point is 00:31:34 But there are alternatives. Well, thank you very much, my friend. I appreciate the insight. All right, take care. Nick, welcome to the show. Hey. Oh, Rick, I'm sorry. Rick, welcome.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Yeah. Well, no, you made a good point there with the police there, like, when they pull somebody over. We have the same problem down in London because the city's getting bigger down here. And I know it's with our police down here. When they pull somebody over, it takes like half an hour to write a ticket. And I mean, nowadays with the technology, with the way they're hooked up, it shouldn't take that long. Yeah. I mean, in and out, it was five minutes, and that's it.
Starting point is 00:32:01 You're on your way. Yeah, just hand them a quick little ticket and send them on their way. Listen, I pre. That would alleviate a big part of the problem, too, I think, right there. Especially you're on rush hour. Yeah. That's ridiculous. Well, thank you, my friend.
Starting point is 00:32:11 I appreciate it. We got time for one more. Andrew, tell me what's on your mind. Hey, Brian, it's good to talk to you. We were just in Quebec City, and my wife and I were amazed. They had a system there where the pedestrians, when they were crossing, all the lights were for pedestrians. When the cars were crossing, the pedestrians all stopped.
Starting point is 00:32:32 Really? Because they were completely separated. It just took out all the thinking of it. Oh, interesting. But the problem is it would never work in Toronto right now because we're entitling our pedestrians and the bike so much. Pedestrians believe they have an unfettered right to forward progress. No one will ever stop them ever.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Yeah, look at the new five-second kind of advanced crossing. All that means is people know they have. five extra seconds to cross. Exactly. After the light starts flashing. Hey, thank you, my friend. I appreciate it. Take it easy, man.
Starting point is 00:33:04 All right, well, from a traffic blitz to speed cameras. Ontario has introduced legislation to ban speed cameras, but a new poll suggests Doug Ford should reconsider. All right, so we were talking about the traffic blitz, and now from that we're going to speed cameras. You'll remember a few. weeks ago, a full 10% of all the speed cameras in the city were just taken down by some sort of, I don't know, anti-camera ninja all in one night. And Doug Ford has had enough. He said that
Starting point is 00:33:40 these things are a cash grab. And so his government is moving to ban speed cameras across the province. And he's introducing a new economy-focused omnibus bill. He said, yes, he said cash grab. They punish drivers instead of fixing the problem. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sakaria says that physical road changes. Speed bumps, roundabouts are better for safety. They also, like you can't break them. Like once they're put in, they're there. I'm a big fan of those, but I do also support the idea of speed cameras near schools because there's one near my daughter's school and it makes me slow down or used to when it was there. There has been some municipal backlash. Toronto counselors call it a dark day and warn it'll put kids in
Starting point is 00:34:26 pedestrians at risk, although, look, that means that before speed cameras, this was some sort of like Thunderdome, where there were no rules on the roads. And I think we're, I don't think we're there. But I do appreciate that near schools, they serve a very, very good purpose. I also think that city council is in this city, kind of like the fact that there was money coming their way, because there's a lot of people who like to spend our money at City Hall. But that's a conversation for another day. So research from sick kids hospital said that cameras cut speeding by 45% in school zones. And I believe that. A hundred percent, I believe that because I am one of those people who slowed down because I knew there was a camera coming up. And then as soon as I got past the
Starting point is 00:35:10 camera, I was right at the intersection where all the kids cross to go from one building to the other. So I 100% believe that in school zones, they work. Former police chiefs have urged forward to reconsider. He's calling the cameras highly effective at reducing collisions. Toronto has 150 cameras with 36 other municipalities using them, mostly near schools. Now, once this law passes, and it's expected within a month, camera
Starting point is 00:35:37 tickets will no longer be enforceable. And I mean, I would see the flash of the camera when I was going too fast. I was like, all right, now I just have to wait. It's a waiting game until that thing shows up in the mail. Yes. And the compromise
Starting point is 00:35:52 that Chow put out there was that maybe there was a seven day once you got a ticket there was seven days you had seven days you could not get a ticket from the same camera It was kind of half baked because it would mean that for six straight days
Starting point is 00:36:06 you could speed as much as you wanted and that defeats the purpose of it and she's getting criticized for not having a good enough counter plan to be able to offer Doug Ford. You know part of me thinks he should have used these speed cameras as a leverage point to get his bike lanes
Starting point is 00:36:22 possibly. Possibly. But if you look at Ontario, there was just a poll that happened from liaison strategies that actually speaks volumes as to perhaps maybe he should rethink things. So yeah. So Doug Ford's progressive conservatives are still sitting very high in the polls, 47% ahead of the liberals at 33. So they're doing okay. However, there is speed camera backlash. 49% of Ontario disapprove of Ford's plan to ban speed cameras, 34% approve. And the disapproval is highest among women and not surprisingly liberal and NDP voters. There's a compromise that is popular. If limited to school zones, support for cameras jumps to 86% of NDP, 83% of liberals and even 41% of PC voters support the idea. And I guess the takeaway is that Ford's move pleases his base, alienates much of the public, school zone only compromise could be politically safe as an off ramp we'll have to see we'll have to see what happens in those school zones is he going to put down speed bumps is he going to put down
Starting point is 00:37:32 traffic calming barriers and that that sort of stuff I think rumble strips work as well but we'd love to hear from you 4168706400 or one triple eight two two five talk where do you land on the speed camera debate near schools I don't have a problem with them everywhere else I do believe it's a cash grab if if I'm speeding I want to cut Telling me I'm speeding. Yeah, give us a call. 416870-6400. Phil, welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:37:57 You think it's a cash grab. Yeah, hi, Ben. Just brief, I'm living in St. Catherine. But I think if there's a, if the speed cameras were operational, when school guards are on duty, that would be a reasonable compromise. But right now, I know most, if not all, speed cameras, they're 24-7, which to me, I know, excuse me.
Starting point is 00:38:25 No, you're right. They should be turned off when the kids aren't at school. If it's really for school safety, then they should be working only when the kids are in school. Right. I mean, just to be quick, the proponents would say, well, no, you need a 24-7 to modify driver's behavior. But to me, that doesn't cut it. No, no.
Starting point is 00:38:44 I listen, I think you and I are singing from the same hymn book. Thank you very much, Phil. I appreciate it. Okay. All right. Bye-bye. All right, let's take Joe next. Joe, welcome this show.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Good morning. Thank you for taking my call. Absolutely. Appreciate. Yeah, I'm all for, I'm all for speak cameras. I mean, I think you're right. We should limit them to school zones. Yep.
Starting point is 00:39:07 I know the city did at one point when they first came up. They were targeting school zones only, but then they decided to go beyond the school zone area. But we should be flexible. We should be able to take them if there is an area, a location where there is an issue or safety issues, like Parkside Drive, for example, we should be able to be more flexible to have them. Yeah. I think they're effective. They're very effective. Every time I see a sign, I slow down.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Yeah, listen, I very much like the speed camera by my daughter's school. I didn't like the fact that it also caught me going in the opposite direction. It's either to protect the kids at the school or not. And so you've got to, like, pick a lane. And if you can focus them, laser focus them, I think you'll have even more desire by the public to keep them. Thank you very much for the call, my friend. Who do we have next?
Starting point is 00:40:00 We've got, we've got Gregory. Gregory, welcome. Hi, Ben. I do agree that during the school times, they should turn the cameras off. Yep. But also, since it might be, the speed cameras might be rude out,
Starting point is 00:40:15 they should have speed bumps. I'm a big I'm a big fan of speed bumps I think they work and some people tell me they don't I think they slow everyone down absolutely yeah hey thank you for the call I appreciate it all right I think we have time for one more let's let's take Colin Colin welcome to the show hey there thank you for taking my call yeah you got about 30 seconds my friend so it's an absolute cash grab without the peace officer present to witness the offense and take points from the license obviously the road will never be made any safer because the guy with too much money who just speeds through the school zone every day can keep on doing it right you know i hadn't thought about it that way you're right those who can afford it will continue to speed because there's no points taken off of of their license you're absolutely right i figured this out yeah they made six was it six million dollars down on parkside drive yeah why don't they hire some police officers yeah well thank you very much hey call we got to run but thank you that that that was a very good point thank you very much all right
