Starting point is 00:01:19 We're going from the world economic form to something a little bit different. And I am of a certain generation where MTV broke the mold and introduced us to a type of television that was not only entirely watchable, but wholly addictive. And I'm talking about Jersey Shore. And let me tell you, for me and my generation, when that's... that show went away, there was a hole in our hearts, like a hole in our hearts. And then they came back and we watched, we watched the family vacation. And I, and I jumped in with both feet.
Starting point is 00:01:55 And I was so happy that the situation found his life again. What is it? The only thing better than a comeback is a, shoot, he had a T-shirt. I can't remember something about, oh, oh, the, oh, the comeback is better than a setback or something like that. Anyway, it was awesome. And so, and I always wondered, I was like, we've got people in this country who can turn and up to 11. When are they ever going to do a show like that? Now, it's maybe past my,
Starting point is 00:02:19 maybe I'm past the audience that's going to watch, but I am going to watch it. I'm not going to lie. And we're happy to be joined today by two of the original new cast members of the brand new show, Canada Shore, Emmett and Riley, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for being. Hello, hello. Thank you for having us. Okay, so let's just level set because I'm, I'm almost 50. You clearly are not. You don't look at day over 35. Well, I exfoliate. Thank you very much. But talk to me about, like, what do you, how old are you guys? I'm 25. I'm 25 as well.
Starting point is 00:02:48 So what do you remember above Jersey Shore? I remember watching my sister. Yeah, yeah. And what did you think of it back then? I thought, I don't, I was pretty young. I was like, what, came out in 2009, right? Okay, yeah. It was literally nine.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Nine. So I was like, a lot of it was over my head. But then as I got, like, into my teenage years, I started watching it again. And I was immediately addicted. Yeah. Beat the beat. Beat the beat. I need to beat these people.
Starting point is 00:03:16 I grew up on that show. I started watching it at a really young age, probably like middle school. I probably shouldn't have been watching another school. But yeah, they like raised us, I was watching it
Starting point is 00:03:25 when I should not have been watching it. Yeah, we should not have been watching it. But yeah. So take me into how this idea for this show collided with you in your life. Rather, start with you. I feel like it's just made for me.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Like if there was any type of show that I could do, it feels like this is the right one. It just kind of fits. with my whole vibe and my personality and what I like to do. So, yeah, it was kind of like a match made in heaven. And the fact I got the opportunity was so exciting. Talk to me about the opportunity.
Starting point is 00:03:51 How did you, like, what happened? Did you hear about it online or cast-ups? Are we casting? There was a casting call and I sent in a little video. And then I got reached out to. And yeah, it was an incredible. I mean, it felt like it wasn't even real for a long time. Like, it felt like it might have not even been legit.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Yeah. Just because I'm like, who knows, right? And then, yeah, the opportunity was incredible. And Emmett, what about you? Yeah, I had a buddy mine actually forward me a link to send an application. And he was like, you know, this show is coming about partying. He was like, you're an animal. You need to get your name in there.
Starting point is 00:04:26 And I was like, what the hell it can't hurt? So I tossed an application. Same thing sent in a video. And a little bit of time went by. And they reached out to me. And yeah, same thing. It didn't really feel real. I actually almost didn't even answer because they were trying to call me a bunch.
Starting point is 00:04:40 And I was like like a telemarker number. So I kept me like, no, no, no. You guys are part of the generation. You don't, you know, call. We don't love calls. It's like, who are you? And then I answered it. They're like, you need to check your emails, buddy.
Starting point is 00:04:51 It's like, oh, my God. So one of the things that I think happened with the first show is I think they accidentally stumbled into what made that show magical, which is they formed this family bond. Right. Right. I don't think that was part of the plan. Right. And it ended up happening.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And I think that's what extended the show. And I think it's what, you know, people found in. endearing about it even even when they were watching people behaving in ways that it might have been embarrassing they're like yeah but there's a heart around right there's genuine affection and when they're mad at each other it's because they matter to each other right um hard to recreate impossible to so so at they tried in a flora bama right did not succeed in my opinion there are some moments of brilliance failed on flora bama sure however that doesn't mean it can't happen again again yeah so talk to me people
Starting point is 00:05:42 about your other castmates? I'd say that we're very similar to that. I do think that, number one, Jersey Shore is the blueprint. We will never be them, right? Like, ever. And it took them a while, right? Right, absolutely. It took a few seasons for them to build that.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Snooki wanted to leave in the beginning, right? Like, it's such a, it does take time to develop those relationships. I think being in a space where, like, you're living together 24-7 and things, like we get closer than you would in any other circumstance. So we genuinely do feel like family. I feel that way. We fight and then we make up. and we love each other.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Yeah, we fought. We fight. Not even we fought. We fight. We fight. We are talking about Canada Shore with Emmett and Riley. The show premieres on Paramount Plus on Thursday. How long, like did you, cameras are on all the time.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Yes. At night, I have to assume there's just cameras on the walls and stuff. You can't hide. No, you can't hide. At any point, do you just forget they're there? Yeah. 100%. I'd say after like the third or fourth day, it was kind of like,
Starting point is 00:06:41 I didn't even know all over there. Mama's by like day two because I remember once we went to the little food, the farm market place. The day we were going to do that, I was like running around changing and not even thinking about the fact there's two grown men with giant cameras in the room.
Starting point is 00:06:54 So yeah, you just sort of, yeah, you forget. Did you have any rules for yourselves when you went in? Did you say like, okay, these are certain things I'm just not gonna do. No. I had just to have the most fun that possibly could.
Starting point is 00:07:05 That was my rule. Even if it meant, like I've seen some of the trailers, like even if it meant putting yourself in a position where you're going to watch you know you're going to watch listen when you're 50 I was just watching some videos of myself with my kids
Starting point is 00:07:18 because my son said he'd never seen me from like 25 years ago and that's when I started so I started when you guys started when 25 and so I showed him some stuff of me and I was embarrassed for myself right right like any concern with that or you're like I'll worry about that when I'm 50
Starting point is 00:07:35 yeah I'll do that I'll worry about it later yeah I'll enjoy it right now yeah you just got to be your self and like just stay authentic throughout the whole time. And if you do something that's embarrassing, we all do. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:07:46 You may as well have fun with it. I think that's what's going to make it just as good as like everybody is just their authentic self. Yeah. Everyone is just being them. No one's trying to be anyone. They're not. What do you what do you want Canadians to know?
Starting point is 00:07:59 Because in a way, you're asking people to, um, to, to, to, to, to, but you're pulling on nostalgia threads, right? And for some people, they might say, you know what? I don't need that again. Yeah. But, but, but, but, Like, I gotta say, I'm not gonna lie, I watched the trailer, and it did remind me, gave me those feelings of when I watched it.
Starting point is 00:08:18 So what do you want to tell those people who, look, this MTV doesn't even exist anymore. Right, yeah, we're not them. And we never will be. We can only look up to them and adore them, but it's really, it, we had our own full-blown experience. This was probably like a decade ago when they were filming right initially. So we're gonna be completely different people. We talk differently. We have different personalities.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Like, we are not trying to be them at all. You're showcasing, but you're showcasing a Canadian aspect of sort of the energy that we're on that show. Absolutely. So I'd love to hear that you felt that. Oh, yeah. That's so exciting. We got, we can keep going on this. I do want to keep this going in the next conversation because, you know, watching,
Starting point is 00:08:58 watching what fame did to those guys on that show, that's, I think, where a lot of people came in and they were, you know, they worried about these people. Absolutely. Is there, like, is there any element of, uh, that original show that you're looking at is like, okay, that's a cautionary tale. Fame can mess with somebody's head. Yeah, I definitely, I mean, I can definitely mess with someone's head. Yeah, I do like the thing. And people in your lives were checking and just reminding you.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Oh, yeah. You're still the same person. You're being a humble. Who is that in your life, Emmett? Probably my mom. Yeah? My mom. For sure.
Starting point is 00:09:32 She call you every day and just just remember. Yeah. I brought you into this world. Yeah, I brought you into this room. Take you out of it. My mom's exactly, that's mine too. That was exactly what I was thinking. Oh, yeah, listen, I got that all the time from my parents.
Starting point is 00:09:45 I never thought I was acting like. I don't mean me, that's what I was saying. Yeah, I didn't think I was. And my mom was like, hey, just watch yourself. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, no. You host a game show, Ben.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Don't work. Nothing special. My mom's still saying, we got to figure out backup plans. Don't get, don't get too excited. Well, that brings up another question. Prior to this, what were your future plans? What did you want to be when you, I mean, I just work.
Starting point is 00:10:12 I live Vancouver. I'm a pipe fitter out there. I work in a shipyard. You know, I'm make enough money to pay the bills. So, I mean, that's kind of just the career path for me if I didn't do this. It's an honorable path, man. Absolutely. I did freelance marketing.
Starting point is 00:10:28 So it was more of a, I didn't have as much of a stability as he did. Yeah, so I go around and do marketing and stuff. So that was a fun job for sure. Well, I want to talk to you when we come back from the break. I want to talk to you about, like, have those plans change? We've got so much more discussed. I want to know what happens this season. So don't go anywhere.
Starting point is 00:10:46 I am in conversation about Canada Shore with Emmett and Riley. Don't go anywhere. What does top talent really want? Do our tax research tools make us seem outdated? What does top talent really want? How can we stop losing people to our competitors? What does top talent really want? What if new grads don't want to work like it's 1999?
Starting point is 00:11:17 With Blue Jay, you can give your people the tools they need to succeed. Tools that make it possible to go from tax question to client comms in minutes. Get better answers to tough questions. BlueJ. A.I. for tax experts. Metro. Say big on amazing items. Like a 12-pack of selected Coca-Cola and Canada dry cans, only 699 each. And selected varieties of VH sauce just 244 each, only till January 21st. Shop in store or at metro.com. Marketing. So, like, I'm trying to, you know, do as much content as possible and trying to really get out there. with my social. So, like, that's kind of where I feel like my life before led me to this,
Starting point is 00:11:58 and it's very helpful. So, yeah, it is a bit of a while. It's weird to wrap our head around the fact that we are going to get, I guess, fame. I can't. One of the big, well, when I did Canadian Idol, the, I watched it with my friends. And then we walked out, we were going to go to a bar. And a car full of girls drove by and honked at me. And then a car full of dudes drove by and told me I sucked.
Starting point is 00:12:22 all within like five seconds and I was like okay I get this this is where we're at but so you might get both but yeah you had Snooky
Starting point is 00:12:35 from the original the OG on the show was she there as a mentor what was she there for can you talk about that are we allowed to talk about that's in the first two episodes isn't it
Starting point is 00:12:45 let me put it this way let's ask you did you did did she impart any wisdom on you Oh, yes. Yeah. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Yeah. She definitely imparted wisdom. She told us, she gives all kinds of advice. Like she was, you know, mainly what she told us advice wise was like we'll fight a lot. And, you know, as much as we don't get along, we do get along. And at the end of the day, we are all experiencing the same thing together for the first time. This whole surreal thing. Like, we're all family at the end of the day, you know.
Starting point is 00:13:16 So you always have to bring it back to the center with everybody no matter what happens. Did you guys have a job on the shed? Like they worked at a t-shirt thing. We had multiple jobs. We got a lot of jobs. Yeah, we did. We got a lot of jobs. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Yeah. You'll see, we got a lot of jobs. Okay. It was cool. And is there a family dinner? We have lots of family dinners. We have lots of them. We have tons.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Family breakfast. Family breakfast. Everybody actually. And it was a big cook. I cooked a lot. I cooked and cleaned. He made a lot of grilled cheese. I made a lot of grilled cheese for the drunks.
Starting point is 00:13:44 I made a lot of grilled. I barbecued a bit. You know, I love the grill. My great joy after making a great meal is cleaning my kitchen. Like I need to. That's him. Not this kitchen. You would not get joy out of cleaning this kitchen. Trust me. I did it many times. We were a lot of type B personalities. Talk to me about shooting in Colonna.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Because the first season of Jersey Shore, they will not welcome on the Jersey Shore. But the tourism picked up because of it. And the next thing you know, it was a hero's welcome every summer. So talk to me about being in Colona. I feel like it's going to be very similar for us. I think it was very similar I mean I think we had like
Starting point is 00:14:23 same thing that you just said like we'd go to the bars and the girls would be like woo and the guys would be like you suck we had the opposite yeah
Starting point is 00:14:32 it was like you know vice versa of guys and girls it was definitely interesting to like get randomly hated for not even
Starting point is 00:14:41 yeah for existing well because in the house right it's your safe space right that's your set that's your whole And so the cameras are there and it's totally normal. Taking that out into the, into the real world is a whole other dynamic.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Oh yeah. For sure. Yeah. Yeah. It was interesting. Yeah. People would be like, get out of our city. Get out of our bar.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Get out of our city. Go home. Yeah, but the, but the, sort of the ideal situation is that, you know, people go to Cologne and say, I want to go to that bar that the Canada Shore people. Right. Exactly. Next thing, you know, they're calling up producers next year saying, hey, you know what? We're going to have a spot right for you.
Starting point is 00:15:17 the whole time. You can keep your production gear here. People just love to hate sometimes. Well, yeah, it is part of it. But again, with a show like Jersey Shore, there was that element in the beginning. But the authenticity of them came through. And to be honest, the vulnerability is they got older, right? Their willingness to share the mistakes they made.
Starting point is 00:15:37 The willingness to say, yeah, I got that wrong. And I think, look, people love, what do you say? The setback is, the comeback is always greater than the setback. I mean, it's a great. freaking quote. It's true. And the situation is a very wise man because he's been through it. He's been through it.
Starting point is 00:15:55 He's been through it. Yeah, he has. But you're at the beginning of it. It was at any point did you find that you were self-conscious at all in front of the cameras? Or do you think that you are hired specifically because you don't get self-conscious? I think the second option. The ladder there. I think like I wanted to, I was like, put me in the camera.
Starting point is 00:16:16 I want it light. Give it to me, give it to me. I've always been fine in front of the camera. I love that kind of stuff. So, yeah, and I really, you really did forget that they were there. It's the strangest thing. And even if, yeah, you just kind of block it out.
Starting point is 00:16:28 And they're like everywhere. So did anybody in your life, you know, your rider dies, did anybody give you like a warning or like caution or advice on, on something to keep in mind? My mom just told me to make sure I'm myself fully and like to not think of her. And like to not like, do not think of her, but just like do your thing. Don't think about the fact.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I'll be watching sort of thing. Yeah, I mean, most people, like, in my mainly immediate family
Starting point is 00:16:52 just told me to, like, my mom would be, like, make sure you be good. I don't really think you know what this show is about. What did your friends at work say?
Starting point is 00:17:02 Because you have to take some time off, I guess. Yeah, so really at first I wasn't a lot to talk about being on the show. So really the only person who knew was like my head boss. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:11 And he thought it was sweet. He approved the time off immediately. He was like, yes. So you're using, What do you say to him? It was actually pretty funny. I was like, I went to his office and I was like, hey, like, I have a weird request for like this time off that is more than I'm allowed to have.
Starting point is 00:17:27 But I kind of need it. And I just explained to him to the situation. I'm going on this show. Like, it's a Canadian spin off of Jersey Shore, like all of this. And he was like, what, dude? Yeah, approved. Approved. Approve.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Amazing. Yes, go. That's amazing. So that was actually really awesome for them to handle that. That's amazing. And so who do you watch? the first two episodes with? Did you watch it as a whole? Yeah. Everyone in the host watched it all together. Literally just last night too. Yeah. And everybody loved it? I loved it. I thought it was
Starting point is 00:17:57 hilarious. I think it was like 200% better. I thought it was gonna be to be to be honest. No, I loved it too. It was amazing. And look, a good editor can I can take a hero and turn them into a villain. Yeah. Right. Very easy to do. I like the right music and slow mo. It's true. The wrong looks. Cut out a certain word. Right. And so that can happen. Do you feel that I know it's early days. It's been the first two episodes, but do you feel that the person that you put forth, the authentic versions of yourselves are what we're going to see?
Starting point is 00:18:25 I think so. I can't. For me personally, it was definitely how I felt at that time. I think I acted out of character for my actual self in real life. But it wasn't me acting like anyone or doing anything to like that.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Like I wasn't doing it on purpose. But yeah, I wouldn't say that my personality is the exact same as what I showed. I've always wondered when I watch these shows of people like I watch all those MTV shows, the real world and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:51 I was always struck by how quickly bonds were formed. Right? And how quickly people would say, you're my brother, you're my sister, I love you, I'm your,
Starting point is 00:19:00 I'm, you know, I die for you, I've got your back. Like, always really impressed with that. Did that happen with you guys? Yeah, and I think it's like, on a show like this,
Starting point is 00:19:08 like you don't have like, you don't have like all this technology and stuff to like, you know, spend your time, wasting your time, way in the daytime. All you have is these,
Starting point is 00:19:16 people in this group. So like all day, like you don't see it in an episode, like one episode is a couple of days really quick. But for us, it's like, that's 48 hours of all we had is just communicating with each other and doing these other. Oh, because you don't have your phones. We had nothing. We just have that duck phone. We're the duck phone. We did have the duck phone. That's it. So in your own way, in your own way, you had like a digital detox. Right. It was. That was not hard for me. I thought it was great. I actually really loved it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I barely wanted it back. Well, guys, listen, I wish you great success. I know. And I mean, I hope you can take this and do whatever you want with it.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Thank you. I wish you nothing but joy and happiness. And I hope that your show gives that to all of us. Thank you. Yes, Canada Shore, Paramount Plus, first two episodes on Thursday. Emmett, Riley, thank you very much. Thank you. And we'll be right back.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Intel chain is compromised. New on Showcase. You were hacked. You're telling me it's real. Someone's been watching and listening through you. Simileo. We can either attempt to remove what's in your brain or we keep back open.
Starting point is 00:20:33 Melissa Barrera. We need to use you to find them and destroy them. Tell me why you chose me. We either save the mission or save his life. The Copenhagen Test. All new Tuesdays, only on Showcase. Stream on Stack TV.
