Starting point is 00:00:00 This podcast is brought to you by the National Payroll Institute, the leader for the payroll profession in Canada, setting the standard of professional excellence, delivering critical expertise, and providing resources that over 45,000 payroll professionals rely on. Hey, thanks, son. What do I owe you? Don't worry about it. It's payday. Payday, huh? I bet you it went straight into your bank account and you didn't even check your pay stuff. My what? Your pay stuff. Back in my day, you had to wait for a physical check. Then you had to go to the bank. Deposit it, and wait for it to clear.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Your pay really meant something. Payroll is incredibly complex. It's art and the science. It literally keeps the economy moving. Payroll professionals do a lot for us. You know, it's about time we do something for them. How about we ask our leaders to name a day in their honor, a national day to recognize payroll professionals?
Starting point is 00:00:44 I got it. This is perfect. Why don't we explain to people just how important the roles are professionals play in our lives. We can even ask them to sign a petition. We can even ask them to sign a petition to recognize the third Tuesday in September as the national day to recognize payroll professionals. We'll rally support and bring the payroll party to the nation. National payroll party? Precisely. Sounds like a plan. You know, just one thing. What's that? I'm choosing the music. What? And I'm sitting in the backseat. The whole way? The whole way.

And I don't mind making the speech without a teleprompter because the teleprompter is not working.
Starting point is 00:02:08 I can only say that whoever's operating this teleprompter is in big trouble. You're listening to The Ben Mulroney Show. That was Donald Trump giving his. address at the UN General Assembly. We're going to dig into that in just a moment, but I just saw that there is a press release by Hamas commenting on the recognition of the state of Palestine by Britain, Canada, and Australia, and the announcement by a number of other countries of their intention to recognize the Palestinian state. This recognition is an important step in affirming the right of our Palestinian people to their land and holy sites and to the establishment of their
Starting point is 00:02:45 independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. It is a reward for the struggle, steadfastness, and sacrifices of our people on the path of liberation and return. This important step must be accompanied by practical measures, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Doesn't say anything about giving up power. Doesn't say anything about putting down their arms. Doesn't say anything about
Starting point is 00:03:04 the terror, about the... Doesn't say anything about the conditions. No conditions. Recall on the international community and its institutions to isolate this rogue entity, Israel. Stop all forms of cooperation and coordination with the escalate punitive measures against it and work to bring its leaders who are war
Starting point is 00:03:20 criminals before international courts and hold them accountable for their crimes against humanity. Oh yeah, these guys have, they're definitely, they're definitely down with the plan. They're not delusional at all. No, no, no. They're definitely going to play ball. They're definitely good faith operators. Okay, so more on that as it develops, but that's, and it's not technically a thank you, but it's kind of a thank you, which would make Canada's third thank you from Hamas.
Starting point is 00:03:46 It's not a real thank you. It doesn't say thank you, but it's close enough. Way to go. Yes, really proud of that. Okay, let's continue with Donald Trump. He had a lot to say. And so let's continue with the next clip. What is the purpose of the United Nations? The UN has such tremendous potential. I've always said it. It has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it's not even coming close to living up to that potential for the most part,
Starting point is 00:04:16 at least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up. Yeah, he's, Donald Trump doesn't mince words. The rambling speech continued, and he rambles especially, and he didn't have a prompter, right? So, you know he was going to ramble. He's speech focused on eliminating drug cartels. He accused the United Nations of funding the migration crisis.
Starting point is 00:04:42 He said, quote, it's time to end the failed experiment of open borders. to end it now. He told the General Assembly, I'm really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell. And this was him, this was him taking aim at those countries, like Canada, who recognized a Palestinian state. This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7, even while they refused to release the hostages or accept this fire. Instead of giving to Hamas, and giving so much because they've taken so much, they have taken so much. This could have been solved so long ago, but instead of giving in to Hamas's ransom demands those who want peace should be united with one message, release the hostages now.
Starting point is 00:05:37 It's released the hostages. I mean, alongside Singapore is Donald Trump on this issue, the voice. of reason. I don't want to live in the world where that's the case, but I take the world as it is, not as I want it to be. And yeah, I mean, look, I read you the press release by Hamas, where they have been emboldened. Now, they don't just want their statehood. They want Israel marginalized, isolated, brought up on war, as war criminals.
Starting point is 00:06:13 and they want Jerusalem, they want it all. And what have I said? And I will continue to say it. Everything will never be enough. So this is a new wrinkle in our relationship with the United States. We've already had a lot of trouble communicating. And now with this new position compared to what it used to be, I mean, we used to walk in lockstep with the Americans,
Starting point is 00:06:41 steadfast allies of Israel, not to say that we can. co-signed everything they did. There are plenty of times where we stood in opposition to a policy of Israel. But this is, this is so different that our American compatriots and partners are going to look across the table and say, we don't even recognize the people we're negotiating with. So maybe we won't negotiate. And Donald Trump said as much yesterday. So stay tuned. Gary Ananda Sangari Gary Ananda Sangri Our Minister of Public Safety
Starting point is 00:07:15 He's having a heck of a year Right So you'll remember that Gary Ananda Sangri Found himself With a series of conflicts of interest Because of his relationship With the Tamil community
Starting point is 00:07:31 So much so, so many In fact, that he had to put up a conflict of vince's screen and recuse himself as the Minister of Public Safety from any file that related to the Tamils. He asked officials to implement this screen so he could be removed from national security decisions involving the Tamil community to avoid the appearance of conflict. I don't know how one can do their job as the Minister of Public Safety if when issues of public safety come up, you have to recuse yourself. Why did he have to do this? Because it came to light that he had written letters advocating for someone linked to the terrorist
Starting point is 00:08:08 organization, the Tamil Tigers. And he did that before joining cabinet. He wrote letters in 2016. There was also scrutiny and media coverage of a potential bias and perception of issues. The media and some watchdogs have questioned whether his past advocacy for Tamil refugees could conflict with his current duties. So we've actually mused on this show. With all due respect, and I'm sure he's a lovely man.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I'm sure he's a nice man and a good man. He goes to work every day and tries his hardest. But if you find yourself with enough conflicts that you can't do your job as it relates to a terrorist organization in Canada, maybe that's not the job for you. So that was something that we sort of threw out there a few months ago, like a hanging Chad. You shouldn't be speaking this much about the Minister of Public Safety. No, we shouldn't. In this regard. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Well, anyway, he has a new file, right? he's in charge of the government's gun buyback program. You know the one that both the Ontario Provincial Police and the Toronto police say they will not participate in because it will do nothing to stop crime? You remember that one? Okay. Well, that's the one we're talking
Starting point is 00:09:15 about. So over the weekend, a recording came to light of a conversation between the Minister of Public Safety and a woman slash acquaintance of his. She recorded him without his knowledge. And he got very honest
Starting point is 00:09:32 about this this buyback program he said it wasn't going to work it was going to cost too much money and the only reason they were doing it was because of Quebec now what I interpret from that is that's where the votes are you know we're doing this so that we can get the votes
Starting point is 00:09:48 in Quebec and it was a shocking a shockingly honest take by a politician especially in Canada because we don't often get that. So you can imagine what his first day back in the House of Commons was like
Starting point is 00:10:10 after that tape was revealed. Let's listen to a little bit of Gary Ananda Sanghari and his take on the recording. On Sunday I had a conversation with an individual that I've known for many years who recorded it without my knowledge and had it leaked to a gun lobbyist. In that conversation, Mr. Speaker, the subject of the assault-style firearms buyback compensation program was discussed. In trying to address this issue, Mr. Speaker, the individual's frustration, my comments were misguided. Over the weekend, the Minister of Public Safety accidentally told the truth, and he was recorded doing it. He said that the gun grab is not worth the money, that it will go over budget, and it would better just to lock up the criminals,
Starting point is 00:10:58 but that they're going ahead with the bad policy because it's good politics. Does the prime minister agree? Yeah, that is not a good look. That is not a good look as you're trying to stand on some sort of ethical high ground saying that we want to protect Canadians. And then the guy who's in charge of the buyback program says, yeah, it's not going to help. That's not a good look. It's going to be very interesting to see the prime minister explain away this $750 million boondoggle.
Starting point is 00:11:24 But we'll have to wait for him to get back. I think he's back now. from New York. Well, yeah, he's coming back today. He's coming back today. So hopefully tomorrow we'll get him in the House of Commons. Canada's oil sands produce the energy the world needs, but it's the benefits that flow to all parts of our country, like hundreds of thousands of jobs in oil and gas and along the supply chain, and revenue to invest in roads, bridges, our national defense, and more. You see, we're building more than a strong oil sands sector.
Starting point is 00:12:05 We're helping to build a stronger Canada. We're Pathways Alliance, six of Canada's largest oil sands companies working together to help grow Canada's economy. Learn more at pathwaysalliance.ca.
