Starting point is 00:00:41 Visit your local Chevrolet dealer for details. Welcome back to the Ben Mulroney Show. And you know, we oftentimes talk about how polarized we are and how there is a whole lot of shouting at each other, not a whole lot of talking with each other. And sometimes we'll let somebody talk, but only because we're waiting for our turn to jump in and say what we have to say. We're not actually taking in what they say. And all of that would be fine. I mean, I think we'd all want to go back to that world,
Starting point is 00:01:31 given what seems to have developed, evolved or rather devolved in the United States with people taking up arms. I mean, we saw, and it's happening on both sides of the political aisle. You saw Donald Trump almost get assassinated on the campaign trail. Then there was a second shooter at a second event that was caught before he could get his bullet off. And we saw the riots on January 6th,
Starting point is 00:02:05 we've seen that led to the death of a police officer. And then so this weekend, when we saw, oh, we saw the assassination of the two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC. We saw the assassination of the healthcare CEO. These things are all being normalized. You know, there are people who are, who are the assassin, Mangione.
Starting point is 00:02:30 There are t-shirts devoted to his beautiful face. And there are people who are normalizing this as a logical extension of politics. Because we're living in a world where if you are oppressed, then you have the right to push back against your oppressor by any means necessary. And so there was justification for killing the health care CEO because people have lost their health care.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Therefore, you must kill the CEO. People don't like what's going on in Israel. Therefore, you kill innocents who are just walking down the street because they worked at the embassy. This has been the conversation that has been normalized. And so this weekend, the largest manhunt in the history of Minnesota captured everyone's attention after the murder of a senator and a state representative.
Starting point is 00:03:23 And a lot of us, my first instinct when I heard that the senator was a supporter of Israel, I thought, oh, here comes the militant left again. That was my first instinct. But upon learning more, this guy was firmly on the right. He hated Tim Walz. He had problems with a US representative, Ilhan Omar. So he was no fan of the left and for some reason decided that this was the time to take his grievances to the next level by committing
Starting point is 00:03:56 murder. But here is, and it's always interesting when you get somebody who knew the person, but And it's always interesting when you get somebody who knew the person but this the way this guy described so this is the best friend of the shooter and I was expecting to hear oh, yeah, he's a quiet guy kept to himself all that stock and trade stuff of of shooters But he actually added some very some really important color to this man that we I'm sure we'll learn far more about in the future. Here's what he had to say about the shooter. I can't believe a political issue would cause him to do such a thing.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Any politicians he mentioned? They don't like Jim Walls. They don't like Jim Biden. What would you say about him? Well, I mean, nothing. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Tim Walsh? Did it like Jim Byer? Tim Walsh? What would you say about him? Well, I mean, nothing I mean, it's just normal I don't like that Tim Walsh did this I don't like that they did that
Starting point is 00:04:58 Yeah, that is fascinating stuff Like the fact that he said he lived with a guy and he was his best friend. And he never expressed like an undue amount of anger in front of his best friend. Like he never lost it in front of me. He never said, oh my God, it's so fed up. I'm going to go buy a gun and I'm going to go do some damage. He never said that. So this is absolutely fascinating stuff, but I don't know what the solution is.
Starting point is 00:05:29 I don't know how the temperature gets turned down. I don't know how we stop lionizing those who have decided that their grievance matters so much that they are gonna make sure that everybody feels it. Everybody feels it. I don't know how we change that because it feels to me like anytime somebody on either side of the fence tries to open the door to dialogue with the other, it is pounced upon by that side to take advantage. And so they are gun shy the next time. And so it's a sad state of affairs for sure, but that's where we are on that front.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Donald Trump obviously is dealing with a lot of this, a lot of it, some of it is of his own making, but some of it is an outcrop of other forces at play. And he wanted his big, beautiful military parade on Saturday to coincide with his birthday as well as the 250th anniversary of the US military. I saw some of it. I had in my mind a different kind of parade. I thought it was gonna look more like,
Starting point is 00:06:43 honestly, I thought it was gonna look more like, honestly, I thought it was gonna look more like the ones that they had in the Soviet Union because I've been told by so many people, this is what Donald Trump wanted. It did not look like that. It did not look like that at all. Despite that, despite it being a sad husk of what Kim Jong-un can put on at a moment's notice.
Starting point is 00:07:06 People were outraged that this happened in the United States. And there were large scale anti-Trump demonstrations called the No Kings Rallies. And they were organized by progressive groups. They spanned all 50 states. And there were even some in Canada. And I really, I shake my head at that. I really, I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:07:30 He's not our president. You didn't vote for him. And had you had the opportunity, I'm sure you would not have voted for him. But he's not our president. I know he affects us every day. I know that he's a problem that we have to deal with, but he doesn't represent us. When he says something dumb, that's on the Americans to explain, not on us. Just like I've said many times before, when there is a crisis, when there's something bad that happens in the United States, it is not for us to import here so that we can atone for
Starting point is 00:08:02 it. We have enough to atone for here. So I don't understand why anybody would take time out of a beautiful Saturday to call for Donald Trump to be removed from office when it is not our office to be responsible for. That is the exclusive domain and responsibility. Sometimes it's a point of pride and other times it's a point of shame. That is for the Americans domain and responsibility. Sometimes it's a point of pride and other times it's a point of shame.
Starting point is 00:08:27 That is for the Americans to deal with. But for some reason, people were moved to do that on a Saturday. And it was all, and also, it was also in protest to the deportations that he has been pushing in the United States. It's led to so many riots across that. I'm not calling them protests.
Starting point is 00:08:43 When you start burning down Shops and you start throwing rocks at cops. That is not a protest That is a we start lighting stuff on fire. That is a riot and I like to call things what they are but Donald Trump was He was asked about you know why he stopped his deportations on farms and in hotels. And it's because it's because the rubber met the road.
Starting point is 00:09:09 It's because had he started deporting people from farms, then nobody would be getting their apples or their oranges or their grapes. And if he did that in hotels, then the already battered hospitality space in the United States would cease to exist because every every hotel would have to close down. Like, you can figure out a way to work around that or you can identify that as a problem to work around later on. But for the time being, that is a front to this war that Donald Trump did want did not want to, to delve into. Before we go to break, I want to spend a little bit of time. There were some protests in California, in Culver City, and every now and then you've heard me on the radio, I have to tap dance. I don't have a guest, and I'm just pulling whatever comes into my brain to throw at you. Well, there was a guy in a traffic chopper who was asked to talk on YouTube for over
Starting point is 00:10:07 an hour. Here are some of the highlights of the streams of consciousness of this guy. The answer is yes. You know what? I don't care. I don't care about my... I am married. I am legally married.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I am legally married. That's about the only way you can really say it. I am legally married. But I am not looking at my wife. I am legally married. I am legally married. I am legally married. I am legally married. I am legally married. I am legally married. I am legally married. That's about the only way you can really say it. I am legally married, but I am not looking at now at all.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I just had a bunch of debacles with my personal life. Yes, it's true. I know it's hard to believe, but yeah, I got nothing right now. Got nothing, got nothing, not really looking. You know, trying to find myself and be happy. I'm serious about that. We've all been there Welcome back to the bed mo rooney show and so if if you were on a subway or public transit anywhere in Canada and somebody decided in
Starting point is 00:11:08 that moment that they were going to show you their genitals, just like, eh, drop trow, that person would be a pervert in the purest sense of the word, especially if there was a kid around. If there was a kid around, ah, then you'd want to put them in jail and throw away the book. However, in the city of Toronto, because yesterday was the World Naked Bike Ride Toronto edition, there is video circulating online of actually right here by the studio, right?
Starting point is 00:11:41 It's right down here on the waterfront. It was World Naked Bike Ride Day. And there are, right in front of where kids are playing on like a makeshift beach, there is a lot of penises just flapping in the wind on, that's what I'm looking at here. Just flapping around for all to see in front of the kids on bicycles.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Some of those bikes are shared bikes. They're the, I don't know what they're called, the rental bikes. Do they disinfect those? Probably not. And so joining me to talk about a city that has lost the plot is Dana McKeel, Downtown Concerned Citizens Alliance. Dana, welcome to the show. Thanks very much, Ben. Great to be on. Yes. I mean, like, is it, if I were wearing a trench coat and opening my trench coat in front of pretty coeds on the University of Toronto campus, I would be a labeled a pervert and I would go to jail. And yet this is now normalized because it's world naked bike ride. Well what they've done is they've been hosting this for many years and it's all against oil
Starting point is 00:12:53 dependency and pollution. They also promote cycling safety and body positivity. However, I don't know how you can understand body positivity was a 350 pound individual on a bicycle with a helmet on his or her head or may or may not have a helmet on their head and riding around downtown including all the visible landmarks like the CN tower, like the Rogers Center here in Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax. How do you address that? It is against the criminal code of conduct. It's against the law. I don't get it in other circumstances. Like I said, if it happened on a subway, the police would get involved. And here, I mean, I don't get it. Now, you know, we're talking about Toronto
Starting point is 00:13:41 and this is where we do the show, but I mean, it's world naked bike ride. So I have to assume this happened in other cities. Oh, yeah. And you know, whether it's as we said, Halifax or Moncton, I know Edmonton and Calgary are addressing their cycling issues out there, especially with the bike lanes and Vancouver here in Toronto. It's an absolute war. And there's 450 cyclists with CycleTO. They're not directly related to this world cycling organization. However, some of them have
Starting point is 00:14:16 taken part. If I decide to get in my car and pull down my pants and drive around the city, I would be arrested for, I don't know what it is, public nudity or something like that. If I did so, if I stopped my car and I'm not wearing any pants anywhere near a school, it would be even worse. I don't know why it's allowed on a bicycle. Tanner Iskra It makes no sense. And just because it's a cultural thing and they've got, you know, 25, 30, 35, 40 cyclists riding along coordination park in Toronto or cycling in front of a city halls. It makes no sense. They've got to be taken into custody.
Starting point is 00:14:53 I get that it's shock value. And that's why we're if it was just World Bike Ride Day, I get it, we wouldn't be talking about it. But just because you have a grievance doesn't make you right. And it doesn't allow you to infringe on other people's rights. I mean, this is the I'm sure most of the people had very good intentions. And they believe in their heart of hearts that this is solving a problem or bringing attention to a problem. It's not it's bringing attention to their genitals. It's not bringing attention to our dependency on oil. And what do you think this does though? You know, this is,
Starting point is 00:15:30 you know, your organization has as your priority to bolster the community, the downtown business community. What does this do to the work that you have to do? Well, it does a lot. It just galvanizes our organization of 58,000 plus. That's residents and business operators. And many of them have addressed this issue already and have taken it to the mayor and to the downtown city councilors, Osmo Malik and Chris Moyes here in Toronto. What's what's what reaction when you go to them with what should be a pretty straightforward appeal and say, hey, there's a lot of penises that we can see, far more than we should on bicycles in your ward.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Is there anything you can do about that? Maybe reduce the number that our kids are subjected to. What sort of reaction do you get? There is no reaction because they don't react. The Toronto City Council does not react on things like this and they'll pass the buck over to Toronto Police Services whether they can enforce the bylaws or not. This is a criminal code of Canada we're talking about.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And whether it's in another part of Canada or in downtown Toronto, which we see a lot of lunacy, this is what transpires, especially in front of kids. Yeah. I'm watching it. The kids are right here. Look, the rules are pretty clear. If you're protesting, your face is not allowed to be covered and your genitals absolutely must be like that's, that's right yeah I'm not misinterpreting the law yeah okay so we are literally flipping that script people can their mask in the wrong part of their bodies well this is the way they go with the activists they like to flip the script all the time and not only are we seeing
Starting point is 00:17:18 it with this annual cycle ride but we're gonna see it again as we normally do every year with the Pride Festival. And that's totally unacceptable. A lot of people come down, they think it's some kind of some kind of freak act. However, the fact of the matter is, many have called for charges, especially when there's kids involved. Yeah. And look, like I completely subscribe to the belief that pride is a huge economic driver for the city. But I have friends in the gay community, I've worked in entertainment TV,
Starting point is 00:17:50 as a straight man, I was the outlier. And so I can tell you that there are a lot of people very steeped in pride and had been going for 20 years, they don't go anymore because it's not reflective of what it used to be for them. It's more about shock value. But you know, it's not my organization to defend and they're having financial issues, which may have some, I don't know why they have sort of, they're having those issues,
Starting point is 00:18:18 but this may have something to do with it. No question. A lot of companies are jumping off board, even for the World Cycling Organization, their numbers are down, their donations are down, and corporate sponsorships are down. And the same thing with Pride Festival. Overall, you see across the country that those numbers are coming down for a variety of reasons, whether it's because of economic factors, or because they just don't, they're not getting the impact that they once did. Yeah, yeah, no, it's a, this is, I listen, my humble recommendation,
Starting point is 00:18:53 if the city is not going to stop this, then they should mandate that it take place on February 1st. on February 1st. World Naked Bike Day on February 1st. Let's see how many men come out and show us their pride. I bet you there will be a few. There will be a few. Yeah, there would be less to see, is my point. No question. There would be less to see. No, listen, I know you've got your hands full. When you started doing your job, I bet you never got your hands full. You know, when you start doing your job, I bet you never thought that you would be fighting the fights you're fighting. Oh, but you know, normally I'm working in sports, but aside from all that, we've got a huge issue
Starting point is 00:19:34 in downtown Toronto, and that is dealing with Toronto City Hall. And believe me, come October 26, 2026, that building's gonna flip upside down because there are so many residents and business operators that are at the end of their ropes with the city councilors and mayor Olivia Chow. Danny McHale, thank you so much for being here. All the best to you.
Starting point is 00:19:54 And I hope you have a great summer free of errant peni. Thanks very much, Ben. Thanks for the advisory. The best high concept sci fi rig of her own in the universe is back. What the hell? How long was I out? Close airlock seven! Rick!
Starting point is 00:20:14 Seth, please let me out! Rick put you in there for a reason, speedy. Mom, just... Get back here! This is for your own good! Rick and Morty. New season, Sundays on Adult Swim. Stream on StackTV. Get your mouth rounded!
