So, dude, let's kick it off.
For our first story, it's the surprise past of the self-driving car.
Because self-driving cars were actually invented 100 years ago.
And the lesson from back then is crazy relevant for today.
Jack, can we kick off this story with some trivia?
Yes, we can.
All right, what do we get?
What was the first ever self-driving car?
Here's the hint.
Oh, it already exists.
You've probably ridden in one.
You might have ridden one today.
You actually may be in one right now.
Because the first self-driving car was an elevator.
Yetis.
1850s, the first elevator patent happens from Otis Elevator Corporation.
And how did they describe the patent check?
A vertical railway.
Yeah.
But here's the thing.
Those early elevators required that a human being be in the elevator operating the whole thing.
Yeah, because Yeties, an elevator is basically a car, but instead of going horizontally, it goes vertically.
And it needed a driver.
It always had a driver until the year 1900.
That's when the first ever self-driving elevator was invented.
Yeah, the first self-driving elevator.
It allowed for there to be skyscrapers in New York and other places.
You push a button and it brings you vertically.
Just like a car, right now we pushed a button and it's bringing us horizontal.
Funny thing, Jack, how did people react in the year 1900 to the first elevator that didn't have a driver?
They were nervous.
Yes.
They were afraid.
Okay.
It was fear.
Put yourself back in the year 1900.
Cars weren't mainstream yet.
Right.
People were taking horse-drawn carriages and buggy rides.
And suddenly you're asked to put your life in the safety of a metal box that brings you up hundreds of feet and down hundreds of feet.
And there's nobody in there.
Well, it wasn't just consumers who were scared of those self-driving elevators.
It was also the elevator operators, which brings us to a key point, the year 1945.
In the year 1945, the elevator driver.
industry, which employed a lot of people in New York City, which had a lot of skyscrapers,
they went on strike.
They were protesting the self-driving elevator invention.
Okay.
New York City shuts down in 1945 for like a week because the elevator operators don't
show up to work.
They're on strike.
People can't go to work in Manhattan.
They economy shut down.
I got to repeat, 1945, the industry of drivers that drove elevators, they went on strike to
protest a new technology, the self-driving elevator.
Sounds a lot.
lot like the resistance to self-driving cars today. That's exactly what's happening today with
self-driving cars. Okay. Now, but here's what Jack I found fascinating about this story. Jack,
what did the elevator industry do in 1945 after elevator operators went on strike? They launched
a marketing campaign to win over the hearts and minds of the elevator riding public. Oh, the elevator
industry. They came out with an ad campaign showing babies and older people pressing buttons on
their own riding and driving their own elevators. And then they add.
a voice to the elevator.
Right, a voice box.
To announce that you'd arrived at the fifth floor.
You were approaching.
To give you a human element.
Floor 7.
Which is the same thing that Apple does with Siri and Amazon does with Alexa.
So yet, there's freakish relevance between the first self-driving car, the elevator,
and the self-driving cars we see today.
So by 1950, self-driving elevators became mainstream.
The drivers ended their protest, found other jobs.
And the self-driving elevator just became the elevator.
Like, we say elevator today.
That's a self-driving elevator.
You can't find an elevator today that has a driver.
So, Jack, what's the takeaway for all our buddies looking at the past of the self-driving car?
The biggest tech breakthroughs.
They're not adapted in years.
They're adapted in generations.
Yeties, let's look back on that timeline.
1900, the self-driving elevator is invented.
1950, the self-driving elevator is accepted.
It took 50 years for the invention of the self-driving elevator to become accepted by society.
Well, let's now look at this self-driving car, like the one we're in right now.
They've only been testing for six years.
We're very early in the game of their adoption and acceptance from the public.
So the way Jack and I see it, the tech industry has a lot to learn today about self-driving cars
from the first self-driving elevators 100 years ago and 50 years ago.
The lesson is it's not going to take just a number of years for this to become accepted.
It's going to take a generation.
And that's actually normal.
We've seen it in history.
Resistance is normal.
Great innovation.
Doesn't take years.
It takes generations.
I have a nervous bit my style.

and I'm like forgetting to experience what's happening here.
I know, this is wild.
Like, did you see actually someone just like waved to us over there?
How far have we moved?
I didn't want to pause the pod.

because there's no driver in the front seat
and we're doing a podcast studio in the back of a car.
But wait, we should keep going.
We got our second story.
Okay, what's our second story?
For our second story, we're right now in the middle of the marina of San Francisco.
I used to live here.
And so Jack and I want to cover the present of the self-driving car industry.
The most important thing for the self-driving car industry right now isn't tech, it's trust.
Funny thing, Jack and I have noticed, a lot of innovation seem to come from one source in America, right, Chad?
The United States government.
Yeah.
The U.S. government is behind, like, a lot of the tech that we all use.
Like, Jack, for example, what's DARPA?
The U.S. government kicked off self-driving cars with DARPA.
The United States defense advanced.
research projects award program.
Okay.
So this government program basically awarded a $1 million reward to whoever 20 years ago could
invent a self-driving car that would go through a 130-mile obstacle course.
Yeah, it was basically a challenge.
It went out to all universities in the United States.
They asked professors and students to create teams to build a self-driving car and complete
a 130-mile race in the desert where, like, it's okay if it crashed.
Now, the two of the winners of that DARPA government-led self-driving car competition challenge
were a couple entrepreneurs, one from MIT and one from Stanford.
Those two MIT and Stanford students, they completed in DARPA.
They got the million-dollar challenge because their cars finished the race.
And they went on to found Waymo and Cruz.
Waymo and Cruz.
And at that point, Silicon Valley got very interested in self-driving cars.
Well, it was students in the United States government that kicked off self-driving cars
and proved it was possible.
Right.
That's when entrepreneurs and private business took over.
Okay.
And that government challenge 20 years ago led to the three leaders of the self-driving car industry today.
Today, the three leaders of self-driving tech are Tesla, Cruise, and Waymo.
Okay.
And here's what Jack and I found fascinating about these three.
These three car companies leading in self-driving cars actually...
Oh, hold on, Nick.
Okay.
So we're in the left lane and a car is turning left.
into a parking lot.
And our ghost driver, no driver car, just went around it.
Just like us, it didn't want to wait for that car to turn left.
Yeah, there was room in the right.
So it switched, it drove to the right around the car and proceeded on.
Do you see, put the blinkers on too?
Did it?
Yeah, put the blinkers on too.
That was really cool.
All right, too.
We are getting some very suspicious and kind of dirty looks from...
Okay, this guy is staring at us.
I'm waving out.
I don't think he's thrilled.
He's not waving back.
He's not a fan of us.
Which speaks to the resistance that we talked about.
Yeah.
I think the combination of podcast.
and self-driving car is not loved by many people.
No, dude, some people in San Francisco are definitely opposed to what's happening here.
Now, yet here's what Jack and I find fascinating about the self-driving car industry today.
The three car companies leading in self-driving have three different business models.
That's right. Let's kick it off with Tesla.
Right. Tesla's business model when it comes to self-driving tech is simply to sell cars.
Right. Tesla wants to sell a self-driving product, the Tesla car.
Tesla was the first electric car.
But now they're not the first anymore.
Everyone's caught up.
So Tesla's plan to differentiate in the future is the first electric car that can drive itself.
That is Tesla's approach to self-driving.
Now, Elon promised he'd have a million robotaxies on the road by 2020.
They missed that deadline by four years, but that's Tesla's plan to sell more cars with self-driving tech.
The second self-driving car leader is Cruise, which is focused on building self-driving cars and self-driving taxis.
Cruise has a fleet of vehicles on the road already.
taking fares from passengers, just like Waymo is, they're basically building a robo fleet.
Uber, but with no driver behind them.
And here's the key.
Uber has to send what percentage of every fare to the driver jet?
80%.
So Cruise can make money by keeping 80% of the fare to itself.
But Cruise is also owned by General Motors.
Interesting.
General Motors, the car company acquired cruise technologies for half a billion dollars.
Back in 2016.
So every cruise robo taxi is a GM car.
But every GM car is going to have cruises.
robo capabilities in the future. Right. So General Motors is using crews to eventually sell like a
self-driving corvette in 2028. For 10,000 extra dollars, you can get a ghost rider upgrade,
which is like the high-end corvette that can drive itself. And the third leader in self-driving
cars is Waymo. Waymo wants to make money by purely selling the software. Self-driving as a service.
This car that we're in is a Waymo car. But it's actually not Waymo. It's a Jaguar. I'm looking at the
Jaguar on the steering wheel right now.
Right, right.
This is a Jaguar car, but Waymo is the technology.
And why is Waymo so focused on technology, jazz?
Because technology is what they do best.
And technology is them, because Waymo is owned by Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
Instead of creating a car, which is a massive endeavor.
Yeah.
They decided to just build, like, the brain and eyes of a self-driving car and sell those brains
in those eyes to car companies.
In other words, someday Toyota can call Google and say, hey,
I want you to self-driveify my entire fleet of cars.
So, Yetis, that's the landscape of self-driving leaders right now.
First, it's Tesla selling a self-driving car product.
Second is Cruz selling self-driving robotaxy service and wanting to sell a
self-driving car.
And finally is Waymo, which just does the technology.
Self-driving as a service.
Three different leaders.
Three different business model.
So, Jack, what's the takeaway for all our buddies looking at the present of the
self-driving industry?
The most important thing about self-driving cars,
right now isn't tech.
It's trust.
Yeties, in 2018, Uber's self-driving car
hit and killed a biker in Phoenix
lost trust in the community
and they shut down their program.
Tesla lost trust in the community
by exaggerating.
They called a feature fully self-driving
when it's not actually fully self-driving.
And Cruz lost trust in the community
after they misrepresented
information from a crash to regulators.
They withheld information.
It kind of looked like a cover up.
So the way Jack and I see it,
the key to the self-driving industry
and what unites all three of these is the need for transparency.
Transparency is so crucial because that's the only way that are in trust.
And if they're not trusted by the public, they'll get shut down.
The most important asset for the self-driving industry isn't the technology.
It's the trust.
That's the present challenge.
The trust from society that self-driving cars should continue to develop.
All right, Jack, can you set the scene for us again right now?
We've got like a beach behind us.
We got the Bay behind us and we got the Golden Gate Bridge on our right.
Jack and I are cruising through the Presidio right now.
There's a driver who I just wave to on the side.
Again, not a wave back, Jack.
Not a wave back.
I think we have tinted windows, neck.
That's a fair point.
That's a fair point.
That's nothing to do with the robot taxi.
So it's not me.
It's not me as what you're saying.
It's not you.
It's not me.
Yet he's Jack and I'll be back in a sec with our third and final story.
In the meantime, we're going to just go to a quick commercial.
For our third and final story,
It's the future, the surprise future of the self-driving car industry.
The future is about the wild impact that these cars are going to have on society.
Every corner of American society has a ripple effect from self-driving cars.
Yet he's this self-driving car, it feels inevitable. It'll go mainstream.
But here's the interesting thing.
What you're not expecting is how many different industries it's going to affect.
It's not just going to affect the car industry.
First of all, we see self-driving cars transforming real estate.
Real estate will be transformed because of the self-driving car.
People live where their work is.
That's the most important thing about where you live.
But if your car is self-driving, it doesn't matter if your commute is two or three hours long.
Right.
Because you can get work done in the car while the car drives itself.
Which leads to the second transformation by self-driving cars.
The car will become a new thing, not work from home, not work remotely, work from car.
Yeah.
If you're not driving and you're not expected to drive, they can really.
re-envision the interior and you could build a desk in the car.
Yeah.
So that you can work during your long commute or work as you head to the weekend for a road trip.
The work from car car isn't going to have a front facing seat.
All their seats will be facing each other.
It's like a movable office room.
It's a movable conference room.
Picture a van with a standing desk that you built.
Yeah.
You could put a treadmill under your standing desk and do all that while the car drives itself.
It's a boardroom with a chassis on wheels jack.
Work from car.
Another transformation is the sleeper car.
Oh, these cars are basically going to become sleep pods.
Let's say you live in Los Angeles and want to go skiing at Utah.
That's a long trip, right?
It's a 10-hour drive.
Why don't you leave at 10 o'clock at night?
Let the car drive you there and you sleep in the car.
Your car will have a mattress if it's a self-driving car.
You wake up in the morning in Salt Lake City after a wonderful night of sleep.
And the car, it pulled over and charged itself when it's battery.
Mattress, mattress, mattress.
The mattress industry is going to love self-driving cars.
Isn't that exciting?
That's wild.
I mean, you could go on a road trip and save one night of a hotel because you did a red eye in the car.
Oh, and then the self-driving car, it's actually become a revenue source for you because you're going to Airbnb your self-driving car.
We call it hail mode.
So let's say you got to Salt Lake City for your ski weekend.
You don't need the car all weekend because you're skiing.
Just open up your car's app and switch the car into hail mode.
Boom.
Nick, it's going to ride around picking people up, dropping them off, and making money for you as your own.
Ridehouse service.
Totally.
Isn't that exciting?
Oh, the self-driving car is also going to become the number one form of transportation for the elderly and disabled.
People who are too old to drive currently depend on their children and their grandchildren.
But 100-year-old could use their robot taxi to go to the hospital, to pick up the pharmacy.
It will mobilize the elderly.
The self-driving car is also going to end drunk driving.
Oh, this is really exciting.
This is huge.
I grew up in Vermont where we didn't have taxis.
We didn't have public transportation.
If you needed to get home after a drink, the reality is a lot of people drove, even though they knew it was illegal.
But because they had no alternative.
Self-driving cars eliminate the need for a taxi service.
Switch your F-150 into self-driving mode.
You had a couple drinks and nobody is endangered.
The alcohol industry is going to love the self-driving car.
So are public safety advocates.
But Jack and I should point out, there are all these, like, exciting industries that will be positively affected by the self-driving car.
But this also is going to affect industries.
in disruptive ways that you wouldn't expect as well.
Like long-term trucking.
I mean, that's the most...
Oh, we're almost here.
Oh, we got to get to the takeaway.
Okay, hold on.
I want to talk about the disruption now.
We think long-term trucking is the first place that self-driving tech will be rolled out to society.
Because think about highways in the middle of the night.
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., long-haul truckers are driving.
And, like, the road is super empty.
That's where we should roll this out first.
But that's going to have an impact on long-term trucking industry.
The airline industry, that's going to be affected by the self-driving car.
Because short trips that you might fly right now.
That trip from L.A. to Utah for that enjoyable ski weekend?
You're going to take the car instead because you can red-eye from the car.
Oh, and this is a surprise.
The police industry, policing, cities are going to be affected in terms of how much money they make because of the self-driving car.
Police departments collect a lot of the revenue through traffic tickets, but self-driving cars aren't going to speed.
They're not going to miss park.
So police are going to have to figure out a new source of revenue and a new way to patrol.
The 80s, when you think about the future of self-driving cars, the way Jack and I see it,
our kids, Jack's a little wilder, little brooksy, my little maxi, they're not going to have
driver's licenses.
They won't need drivers licenses.
They won't need them.
When they're 18, they won't need them.
If they get a driver's license, it's for the same reason one gets a horseback license.
Just for the pleasure of, like, taking a ride.
A horseback riding's a leisure and car driving will probably just become a leisure.
So, Jack, what's the takeaway for all our buddies looking at the surprising future of the self-driving
car. The biggest impact on our lives from self-driving cars may be our lives themselves. But, Nick,
we just arrived. Okay, we have to actually get out of if we hit the rest of the takeaway. Let's get
out of the car and then do the rest of the show from another robo ride. Yeah, we'll take another
robot ride. All right, so Jack, now that we're back in the robo taxi, what's the takeaway for all
our buddies looking at the future, the surprise future of the self-driving car? Biggest impact on our
lives from self-driving cars.
Yeah.
Maybe our lives themselves.
All right, yeties, let's hit some numbers.
Every year, 40,000 Americans die in car accidents.
That's about 100 deaths every single day.
Globally, a million people die every year from car accidents.
It's one of the most dangerous things we do is getting a car.
So with the big question, are self-driving car safer?
Really, you have to not look at self-driving cars compared to a zero-tolerance policy.
You have to compare self-driving car driving to.
human car driving. The status quo is quite dangerous. A hundred Americans die every day from human
driven cars. That's what we need to compare the safety record to. Now, yet he's Jack and I jumped in
T-boy style into all the data we could find about self-driving car safety. And basically, it's
inconclusive. It doesn't show you yet if self-driving cars are safer. We don't have enough data
yet. But in theory, self-driving cars are safer than human-driven cars. And if you look at just
Waymo as an example, they have 40 million miles driven. That's a lot of miles. That's a lot of
A lot of miles. Zero injuries and zero deaths due to those 40 million miles of driving.
Now, interestingly, you'll notice that self-driving cars, when they do have accidents,
they get a lot more attention in the media because it's a new technology, it's robots.
That's healthy skepticism.
A different margin of error.
But if we hold self-driving cars to a zero tolerance policy in terms of safety,
then we're missing a potentially huge opportunity to reduce the number of deaths caused by cars in the world.
And that's why the biggest impact, self-driving cars will have on.
Our lives are our lives themselves.

Jack and I whipped it up and it's about the technology in this car.
Humans have five senses.
Yes, Jack.
This car has 40.
Okay, we've got sights, send, smell, all that.
What does this car have?
29 cameras, 6 Liders and 5 radars.
Okay, so what does it do to see, a self-driving robot?
It uses its cameras, but cameras don't work at night.
So then what does it use?
LiDAR.
LIDAR sends lasers out and it works at night, but it doesn't work if there's fog out or rain or snow.
Okay, so if a self-driving car can't use its cameras, it can't use its LIDAR, then what
does it use?
Radar.
Radar.
Radar works at nighttime and in bad weather.
But that's not all.
Yeties, this car also has a memory.
Underneath the trunk is a giant computer packed full of algorithms and technology.
This thing is actually driven every single street and every lane in San Francisco.
So it all is stored up here.
Add it all up.
And Jack, how much does all this technology cost?
$200,000.
Yeah, he's.
Plus the price of the car.
Yeah, this car has $200,000 of technology up here,
but the car itself was only $70,000.
So it's the self-driving part that's the most expensive part.
All right, Jack, now we gotta go say goodbye to our Robotaxie.

So Nick, let's talk unit economics.
Yeah, that car, $200,000 of tech, which is three
times more than the price of the car. It's a $70,000 car with $200,000 of software in it.
So all in it was 270 cash. Okay. That can't be economically viable. Yeah, yeah. It's.
Jack's my first thought here was, these robo-taxies are never going to make money because each taxi
costs like 300 grand total. It's just too expensive to start. Too expensive? But we crunched the
numbers. Yeah. This is a robo-taxie. Uh-huh. It doesn't need to sleep. It doesn't have to go to the
bathroom. It can run 24-7. 365. All of the time picking up passengers. So if you take
24-7-365 and conservatively estimate it makes $20 in fares per hour, which I think gives it
enough time to charge up when it runs out of battery.
Jack and I jumped in T-Boer's style.
We did the math.
These robo-taxie cars, even though they are so expensive, are going to break even and become
profitable in just one to two years.
And after two years, it's all gravy.
Yeah.
It'll be money that Waymo makes or whatever robo-taxies in charge.
It is a pure profit puppy.

but it was also, like, shockingly mundane.
Yeah, that's the same feeling I have every time I get in one of these is,
it's remarkable in that it's magic,
and you're like, I can't believe there's magic.
But it's undermarkable because five minutes in,
you're like, wait, this just feels like a regular cab ride.
It probably felt like those people taking the self-driving elevators.
It's like, oh, we're just going up.
We're just naturally going up.
Now, it's also a whole bunch of contrast
because on the one side, you're also like,
this is thrilling that humans even have this
self-driving technology, but then you're also
feeling sad because you're like, think of New York City cab
drivers with love being in a yellow cab.
You think of London taxi drivers
who spend so much time training to know the streets of London,
and this is a technology that affects them.
That's why I'm excited about this.
Because it makes a three-hour car drive
so much easier. Also, apparently you can film a podcast in a self-driving taxi. I gotta say,
a couple other thoughts. Yeah, what are you thinking? I wish it would stop parking in bus lanes.
Oh yeah, that was awkward. Because I felt bad that the bus drivers couldn't move. The bus drivers didn't
like us. That's not a trust building thing than it got the way of buses. They got to be more aware.
Like, I had felt bad. I also couldn't believe it started honking at us because we were preventing
it from getting at, like we were preventing it from leaving. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was mad at us.
It was not happy.
And I was scared when it honked right.
Which was awkward because when you were on the inside, they had a very seething, spa-like voice.
It's like a doctor, Jackal, and Mr. Hyde.
When you get into the self-driving car, it's like you're at a spa and they're welcoming you into a massage.
What else?
I was surprised at the, like, polarization of reaction from people on the street.
People seemed either super interested and, like, pumped to see it or, like, really mad that there was a self-driving car in their city.
So one person yelled out, there's no driver in there.
another person was this close to giving us the finger.
Another person yelled out, there's no driver in there.
Jack, that was an amazing experience.
That was the perfect way to get to guys.
