This is Nick.
This is Jack.
And this is Snacks Daily.
It is Tuesday.
Tea Boy, Tuesday, August 10th.
Our second and final live pod together in the great state of Vermont.
Here we go.
We're actually on the shores of Lake Champlainia.
I'll tell you, this co-working space didn't have matching standing desks.
No, it didn't.
For co-hosts who want a pod together standing.
That's what they told us.
But they made it work.
We figured it out.
We're on the Pacific Ocean of Vermont, Jack.
Vermont, the only state where the bears are vegan.
It was also the best one.
yet, right? This is the best one. For our first story, lights, camera, AMC theater earnings report.
The real story about AMC's last three months is the story the CEO tells.
For our second story, Target and Walmart want to pay your college tuition. Snackers,
the wage wars have turned into the battle of the benefits. Third and final story,
we just had the biggest deal in chicken history. Five billion dollars for a few chicken wings
because when you're late, you get roasted. Wow. Wow. Snackers, before you
those three great stories. Jack, this is a wonderful mix together. You're looking great over it.
You're glowing. Can I say that? You can say that. Okay, I can say it. Everybody talks about what food
to serve your dog. Yeah, the pet food, the dog child, the cat kibbles, the iguana stuff. Pet food,
it tends to be legumes, grains, a vegetable or two, and then some multi-meat byproducts. Byproducts. Not a word
you want to hear ever. If you're feeling fancy, you'll splurge on the free-range harpooned salmon.
Yes. This was grassy.
fed salmon. But you know what nobody talks about? I know what you're thinking. I just realized it.
What's the pet going to drink? Pet drinks. No one talks about the pet drinks. I feel like most pets have
water their entire lives and nothing else. They got washed down the kibbles and bits with something and we don't
even think about it. Budweiser is thinking about it. Get this. They just made their first ever
dog beer that you can pair with your dog's food. Bud's first ever drink intended not for people is
dog beer. That's right. Hell elf.
for puppies. Beautiful. Nothing like a cold one after a day of, you know, chasing frisbees.
Now, this drink has no alcohol, to be clear. It's a mix of bone broth, corn, and celery,
which sounds a lot more like soup than a drink. Jack, I'm looking on the flavor profile here.
There are hints of ginger and basil. Again, a soup, not a drink. Yeah, it pairs well with a can
of purina, I'm going to say. But honestly, why should Fido be stuck with room temperature,
tasteless liquid his or her entire life? Excuse me, human. This liquid is luke
War. Would it kill you to give me some water in a frosted glass bowl?
Let's hit our three stories.
You're tuned in to snacks daily.
We spoke to the lawyers and we got to get something legal out the way.
The snacks about to hear rain food is air candy.
They don't reflect the views of the Robin Hood family.
It's all informational just so.
We're not recommending any securities.
It's not a research report or investment advice.
Not an offer or sale of a security.
Snacks is digestible.
Business news for you.
Robert Her Financial LLC, member FINRA slash SIPC.
For our first story, AMC just rose 5% after its earnings report.
But the stock rose, as AMC said, they'll accept Bitcoin.
AMC, home of the eight-minute reminded to turn off your cell phones.
Excuse me, I'm just, thanks, thanks.
Oh, thank you.
Sorry, stepped on your toe.
You know, they got those dancing junior men that are like telling you to go to the concession stand.
I'm a racist pieces, guys. Snackers, before the pandemic, AMC, one of the biggest movie theater chains in the world.
Huge.
Had 12 straight quarters of at least one billion revenue.
That was before the pandemic. Jack, since the pandemic, how are things looking?
It has lost over a half a billion dollars each quarter.
So last quarter, they didn't lose half a billion dollars?
They just lost some money over there.
Yes, as the economy started reopening from April to June, revenue for AMC increased to 440.
million. Okay, so that's $445 million of like box office tickets getting bought.
It's less than half of their pre-pandemic norms. But it is 2,200 and 15% higher than ticket sales in the very middle of the pandemic last year.
Snackers, last spring, they made 18 million because the theaters were closed. But honestly, it doesn't even really matter right now.
AMC is richer than ever. Thanks to their loyal retail.
investor fanatics. Snackers, get this. In June, AMC stock was hanging up over at $63. That is up
3,000% for where AMC stock was just six months earlier. Three thousand percent. Give or take.
We're doing a little rounding there. You got to do that every now and that. Management took advantage
of that by printing new stock, selling it at a high price and raising one in a quarter billion
dollars for the company. They literally recognized our stock super high. Let's sell new stock.
we get to keep all that money, it's all fresh cash.
That is why AMC has double the amount of cash right now as at any point in their
101 year history.
This is the McDuck series where they've got those.
Remember, he's got the mountains of gold and the coins and stuff.
And he's skiing down them.
I think he sleds down them at one point.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
It's a Disney classic.
It's a Disney classic.
AMC's richness right now is thanks to the fervent love of everyday AMC shareholders.
So here's the wild.
As a thank you for saving the company, AMC's management team has been treating retail investors
like VIPs. In June, we covered when they launched AMC Connect, which is a club for shareholders
that includes perks such as a free bucket of popcorn. I mean, it's better than what you get
with most AMX platinum cards these days. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at AMC?
AMC's real success depends on storytelling about itself. Snackers, AMC stock used to be determined by
Wall Street. Now it's determined by its retail investor ownership. So the CEO did what he needs to do
to survive. Yeah, he did. He told a story yesterday that sounds excited. Here's what he said in the earnings.
AMC CEO said there will be a happy ending to this Hollywood story. AMC CEO predicted that a movie
would be made about AMC surviving and recovering from COVID. He's acting like Emilio Dux
D2 doing a locker room speech, Jack. Emilio! Amc. Amcc.
will say that the company's innovating by letting you experience musical concerts in the movie theaters.
Yeah, get this, Snackers. Chance the rapper, hosted a secret concert back in 2017.
You can watch that concert starting Friday at AMC theaters.
And in the perfect storytelling plot twist, the CEO just said that AMC would begin accepting
Bitcoin for movie tickets by the end of this year.
So you can go to see Batman, but you pay for it in Bitcoin.
Now, AMC's CEO won't say as much about the business losing a whole bunch of more money.
Yeah, $344 million last quarter.
And he won't say as much about the Delta variant being a huge threat to their recovery.
AMC's stock isn't about the past or present losses.
It's about the CEO's storytelling about the future.
For our second story, Target and Walmart are going to pay 100% of your tuition.
You're going to be a.
Yes, you do.
You get a B-S.
You get a master's.
Oh, congratulations.
The wage war smackers have become the battle of the benefits.
Yeah, this is like straight out of Oprah season three.
Walmart made huge news last month.
They announced for their 1.5 million, a lot of people, part-time and full-time associates,
at both Walmart and Sam's Club.
Keep going, Your Honor.
Free college tuition.
That is basically like every university of blank state added together multiplied by six.
1.5 million people. Now, Walmart paying for college tuition has been around for three years.
But you had to like pay a dollar a day and it went into a program and then Walmart would pay.
They eliminated the dollar a day. Yeah. So now you can be a full-time student during the day,
get your degree. Enjoy. And a Walmart worker nights and weekends. Tuition and books 100% paid by Papa Sammy Walton.
Now there is some fine print. Yeah, there is. This only works if you enroll in seven universities or three other learning institutions.
But if you do, then you don't have to pay for that, you know, used biotexbook for $573 with the CD-ROM that you'll never open.
Right.
And to be clear, this is good for both bachelor's degrees and some master's degrees as well as a high school equivalent.
Funny timing, Jack, because what's going on right down the street over at Targier?
Target's like, me too.
Me too.
I'm down down.
Target and now it's basically the same thing, but with an even broader range of eligible schools.
There we go.
40 schools, colleges, and universities.
So nice work by huge employers to relieve the student debt crisis.
What do you say?
But these two big box stores, Nick, they're feeding two birds with one scone.
They're feeding two birds with one scone because they need to stand out in the recruiting
of workers lately, the wage wars.
There are not enough workers in America to go around right now.
I mean, can we talk about the jobs report from last week, Jack?
It showed that the unemployment rate is still two full percentage points above where it was
before the pandemic.
But we still have a worker shortage.
It's a unique situation.
Parents and the vulnerable are staying out of the workforce until COVID ends.
But the economy is booming at the same time.
That's why, for the first time ever, there are 10 million job listings right now in America.
Which is why you have 10 million LinkedIn messages asking you to submit a resume.
10 million open jobs.
Low supply of workers, high demand for workers.
Yeah.
That supply and demand mismatch has actually put.
pushed the average wage of U.S. supermarket workers to $15 an hour.
Oh, and by the way, all that contributes to inflation because of the higher costs that come
with hiring all these workers.
Yeah, those higher costs are passed on to consumers via higher prices.
And that's why the latte is $43.
So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at Target and Walmart?
The benefit battles are creating a charms race.
Snackers, Target and Walmart, they want to be the employer of choice for people without
college degrees. That's their goal. They want to poach workers away from other low-wage companies.
Snag them. By offering the chance for you to get a college degree without adding a penny of debt.
So funny thing, Jack and I noticed, other companies are making benefit moves too, trying to charm
workers with something besides just a bigger paycheck. In tech, they're dangling remote and
flexible workplace policies. Yeah, they are. So you can code from Cobb. Yeah. Over in banking,
they're jacking up to pay for junior employees. So instead of buying a state,
on a Tuesday night, you could just buy the whole steakhouse.
And then in fast food and ride sharing.
Oh yeah, what are they doing?
They're just giving you more money.
Yeah, they are.
Up front signing bonuses.
Snackers, the wage wars are turning into the battle of the benefits.
It's a charms race.
For our third and final story, I can barely hold the microphone because of all the
paddle boarding yesterday.
My back is sore.
I can barely move.
It was fun.
It was great. We barely survived, but it was fantastic.
We celebrated the win.
It was a struggle, but we celebrated.
Nick had this like goofy foot,
But positioning I'd never seen before.
Here's the thing.
You want to approach it in an athletic stance.
But I was dragging a life vest.
Yeah.
Which was serious drag.
I mean, you need to see that to picture that.
Snackers, America's third biggest chicken producer,
Sanderson Farms is selling for nearly $5 billion.
That is the price for being late to a trend.
Sanderson Farms.
The stock is up 70% for a chicken company this year.
This chicken company is based in Mississippi.
Yeah, it is.
That's special, right?
It's the only Fortune 1000 company based in Mississippi and the only Mississippi-based company
we've ever covered on this podcast.
I think it's just Alaska.
We haven't crossed off.
We got to hit that.
I mean, Snackers, if you're in Alaska, just send us some news.
Sanderson Farms just got acquired by a private company called Cargill, which makes grain
and feed for farming.
And also a company called Continental Grains.
And together, this whole new like chicken operation they got going on is going to
control 15% of all the birds you're eating in the country. This company is going to grow chicken
feed and then feed that chicken feed two chickens. Jack, are you trying to tell us that we got
ourselves the first ever vertically integrated bird? You better believe it. Now, this is a business
school case study if they ever wanted one. This is funny, though, because the big three chicken
producers were sued in recent years for colluding to keep the price of chicken high. And here's why
that's so funny. They were making the price of chicken artificially high. But these,
is chicken prices are naturally at an all time high.
Chicken prices have doubled during the pandemic.
Yeah, they have.
Not just wings, thighs, and breasts.
The classics.
Even the obscure parts of a chicken, the price has searched.
Yeah, you ever had one of these obscure parts of a chicken?
I can't think of them.
You don't want to have one of these.
This is driven by demand.
Yeah.
Find us a fast food restaurant that isn't offering fried chicken something.
We're pausing on purpose.
Find this one.
Tweet us one.
They're all doing a fried chicken thing.
Someone just had a brilliant idea.
for everything but fried chicken.
That's the name.
Last week snackers, Jack and I jumped into McDonald's earnings.
They mentioned the word chicken eight times.
How many times did I mention the word hamburger?
The home of the Big Mac only mentioned burger three times.
That's right.
It's a burger chain, not talking about burgers.
Wingstop is named after a chicken.
Literally, that's the name.
It's wings.
But wing prices are so high, they just launched thigh stop.
They had to come out with a whole new chain because they can barely afford to buy all the chicken wings.
So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies?
over in big chicken. Being late is expensive. Snackers, chicken isn't a fad. It is a trend for like a while
now, way before Popeyes became a thing. Chick-fil-A has made more money per restaurant location than McDonald's
since 2018. That's right. And that's a company that isn't even open on Sundays, by the way.
Chicken has been booming, but Cargill hasn't enjoyed the chicken. No. Beef is Cargill's number one
meat product. Instead of buying into the poultry trend low,
Cargill's jumping in late when prices of chicken is already really high.
That's right. It's buying Sanderson at its highest valuation ever, nearly $5 billion for chicken.
Because being late to a trend can be expensive.
Jack, can you whip up the takeaways for us over there?
AMC stock popped again after announcing they'll accept Bitcoin.
Yeah, AMC's real success is storytelling.
Target and Walmart are going to pay for their workers' college tuition.
The wage wars have become the battle of the benefits.
Cargill is buying Sanderson Farms from Mississippi for $5 billion.
Because being late to a trend, that gets expensive.
Now, time for our snack fact of the day.
This one from Stephen Powell in Houston, Texas,
who apparently had a dictionary with them while he was listening to snacks.
Yesterday, we said there was only one word in the English language
whose meaning changes just by capitalizing one letter.
Yeah, you don't change the spelling.
You just change the capitalization.
And boom, the whole word has a different term.
Polish becomes Polish.
Right. Well, Stephen Powell pointed out there's actually a second here.
Chili becomes Chile. One's a Latin American country. One is a delicious herb. And Jack,
I just thought of a third. What do you got? Turkey and Turkey. Second poultry, one pod.
Snackers, you look fantastic. If you haven't yet, click to follow us right here on Spotify, Apple, Google, wherever you get your pies.
Nick and I'll see you tomorrow. If you know, you know. And before we go, happy birthday to Amali Shah over in Singapore.
and Ali B in Atlanta, Georgia.
And Donnie down in Houston, Texas.
And Jackson, happy half birthday in San Francisco.
Oh, move.
Ryan, congrats in moving to New York City from the Philippines.
We got an expat named Matt, who's a snacker,
whose company just issued their first earnings report after going public.
Yeah, in Singapore.
Oh, and Leslie and Terrence Waters just got engaged on the water.
No relation to the last name, Waters.
Those are some great celebrations.
Yes, they are.
If you're celebrating something, make it a chance.
Teaboy. Celebrate the wins.
