Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Nick. This is Jack. It's Wednesday, May 25th, and today's pod is the best one yet. TBOI. Stox rebounded on Monday, which was nice. Yeah, it was. It was a great time. We all had to plummeted again yesterday.
Starting point is 00:00:14 Yeah, and it's all because of our first story. What is it, Jack? Snapchat. Just had their worst stock market day ever. Snapchat won't say this one word that they really want to say, but they should say it, but they didn't say it, and we want them to say it. For your second story, Beyond Me, just hired Kim Kardashian. Yeah, beyond mean.
Starting point is 00:00:31 It's taking a cool kid's lesson from Freddie Prince Jr. And she's all that. For our third and final story, Walmart is the winner of the drone delivery championship. Jack, we got to talk about a new thing. Invisible Infrastructure. But before we hit that wonderfully refreshing mix. Just a fantastic mix. It's the middle of the week, but it's just a perfect mix.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Let's talk about iced coffee, the human body's natural balancing force. Jack, summertime heat. A morning is messing with you. Cool down with 20 ounces of chilled caffeine. They got that swirly whirl like cream poured into the iced coffee. It's artistic. When cream comes down through the ice cubes, it's beautiful. It's like Van Gogh's Starry Night.
Starting point is 00:01:13 It's ASMR, but for your eyes, Jack. But here's the thing, besties and yet. He's iced coffee. It's not a drink anymore. It's a movement. With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, it's officially iced coffee season. And you know what, iced coffee? It's not just a movement anymore.
Starting point is 00:01:28 It's an accessory. You can't do a hot girl walkneck unless you got AirPods up top and an ice latte and your human cup holder there. And Jack, let's just take this a step further. Ice coffee, it's not just an accessory, it's an excuse. If you're late because you forgot to set the alarm, shame on you. If you're late because there was a long line at Panera, respect to you. But despite popular opinion, iced coffee wasn't invented in some Starbucks franchise somewhere. No, Jack and I jumped in T-boy style.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Darlene at Duncan, she didn't dream up the iced coffee. The first recorded iced coffee on record is in Algeria. Algeria, the North African nation, has been icing its beans for 300 years, apparently. The first iced coffee on record was a Mazagran. The Mazagran, Algeria's chilled coffee to combat the heat. Nothing quenches the Sahara Desert like a frosty French roastnik. Ah, so besties, yeties. If you've got your iPhone in one hand and a venty cold brew in the other,
Starting point is 00:02:25 happy nationalized coffee. Jack, let's chill at these stories. years before this song. Two boys from the Northeast met in the dorm. They had an idea that caused a cultural storm. It's the best one yet, but the best is an norm. That's it is. 50%. That's a fat tip. Tea boy city on your at list. If you know, you know, because we're ready to go. We can't wait no more. So just start the show. Start the show. For our first story, Snapchat stock just had its worst day in its entire history. Because Snapchat's warning us about something. It is. But it won't say. what that thing is.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Snapchat filed. Honestly, no need for a thesaurus here. They filed a warning, literally. It was yesterday. And in that warning, they said, remember we told you just last month, how much money we were going to make these three months? We were like telling you,
Starting point is 00:03:21 we're going to forecast a bunch of numbers. We're going to bring that money. We're actually going to make less, a lot less. We're going to make nowhere near what we told you we were going to make. Just one month ago in April, Snap forecast that they were going to grow 20 to 25% in revenues this quarter. One month later, Jack, where is Snapchat now saying they're going to grow? They said they're going to grow a lot less than the lowest forecasted number.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Yet he's after seven straight quarters. Of whopping 40% growth or more over at Snap, they're now expecting to grow less than 17%. 17 is a brutal number. Can you name a single famous player who wore the jersey number 17? Well, the number seven is a great number. It could name your kid seven, but 17, it doesn't work. It doesn't work. Seven may be a good number.
Starting point is 00:04:06 but the stock fell by 40% yesterday on this surprising and depressing business update. All right. It wasn't even just a drop. This was the worst day in Snap's entire history. Snap IPOed five years ago. Remember they called themselves a camera company? It was cute. They still called themselves a camera company.
Starting point is 00:04:24 They still do. Well, this is the worst day since then. And the stock is below their first day of trade. So Jack and I are looking at the situation here with Snapchat and we're like, you know what? Snap stock didn't just disappear. It was more like a black hole. Yeah, because a lot of other stocks got sucked into this bad Snapchat headline. It was like a universal-sized Hoover vacuum.
Starting point is 00:04:46 They all just got pulled down. Just about every stock on the market fell yesterday. But any company that depends on advertising fell more yesterday. Because Snap, they think that you're going to stop spending money because just things are so expensive these days. So if you're not buying that thing, then that company won't have. advertised for that thing. Exactly. So social media stocks, they got dragged down the most and they weren't even like the worst of it, right, Jeff? News publisher stocks, digital media stocks. Any company that sells ads was down big yesterday. Jack, early takeaway here. Elon Musk is definitely overpaying for
Starting point is 00:05:20 Twitter. If Elon wasn't buying Twitter, its stock would be down a bajillion percent yesterday. Yeah, can I not get a discount on this thing? So, Jack, what is the takeaway for our buddies over at Snapchat and everywhere? Snapchat didn't say the one. word, it and we are all worried about. Recession. Yeties. Jack and I jumped into that Snapchat warning. It's actually an official regulatory filing.
Starting point is 00:05:46 They got to do with the government. It's called an AK report. It's filed with the SEC. It's boring. It's pretty boring. But what Jack and I read, it basically describes a recession without saying the word recession. Yes. Here's what they said.
Starting point is 00:06:00 The macro environment has deteriorated faster and further than we anticipate. Okay, that sounds like a recession. People and businesses are spending less in response to inflation and the rising interest rates. And a recession when the economy shrinks could be in our future if people are spending less. Yeah, so stocks, they fell yesterday because of Snapchat's warning. But stocks really fell yesterday because what Snapchat's warning didn't say. Recession. Voldemort. For our second story, struggling beyond meat has a plan. It has a plan to save itself.
Starting point is 00:06:35 hire Kim Kardashian. Yes. Okay, BeyondMead stock, it's down 60% from its IPO price. We're feeling it personally. It's down like 95% from its post-IPO high. But Jack, here's the big question if you're Beyond Meat. What do you do when you're struggling this badly? Hire a consultant.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Ding, ding, ding, McKinsey, BCG, Bain, you hire a consultant. A company based in Boston. That's what you're going to do. And these consultants, they're going to get out, their MBA metrics. They're going to whip up a turnaround plan, a slide deck, they're going to tell you to like change your price. And they're going to charge a lot of money for that advice. Yeah, they're going to be like, we put a lot of big red arrows on those slides.
Starting point is 00:07:13 So you should do them. That's the turnaround playbook. That's what Peloton has recently done. But hey, Beyond Meat, they're different and they have a different plan. Hire Kim Kardashian. Kim Kardashian is the new chief taste consultant over at Beyond Meat. Shocker. They have a new newsletter that's going to be full of recipes that Kim whips up for like plant-based sausage talk.
Starting point is 00:07:34 There you go. It'll be a nice Tuesday. day. But here's the funny thing that Jack and I find fascinating. Kim Kardashian is actually bigger than Beyond Meat on every single metric we could find. On Instagram, it's obvious. She's got literally 300 more, 300 times more followers than Beyond Meat. Beyond Meat's not exactly like a taste maker here when it comes to, you know, bigger. Even financially, though, like Kim's balance sheet is way bigger than this publicly traded corporation. For example, Beyond Meat, that is a $1.4 billion company now. It's worth less
Starting point is 00:08:07 than just Kim's shapeware startup is. Yeah. Kim's skims is worth $3 billion. So a publicly traded plant-based meat company is worth one half of Kim's underwear brand. In fact, Beyond is worth less than Kim, the human being. For stakes in Skims
Starting point is 00:08:23 and KKW Beauty, they're worth $1.8 billion. So Beyond's basically a quarter pounder in every way. Kim is a whopper in every way. But here's the interesting thing. After announcing that Kim Kardashian was joining the Beyond Meat team, Beyond Meat stock jumped 7%. So just partnering with Kim added $100 million of stock market value to Beyond Meat.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Kim K is a king maker. She touches a burger, adds $100 million in market cap. Boom, Jack, what is the takeaway for our buddies over at Beyond Meat? This strategy is from the teen classic movie. She's all that. Bestie, strange thing Jack and I noticed, Beyond Meat is getting desperate, but they're not changing anything. With this news, they're not changing the product.
Starting point is 00:09:10 They're not changing the brand of the marketing or even the price. No, no, no. Beyond can't change who it is, but it can change who it hangs out with. So Beyond is pulling a lesson from the 1999, teen classic film. She's all that. To make itself popular, Beyond is getting picked up by, you know, the coolest kid in high school. It's like Kim Kardashian is Friday Prince Jr., making a public appearance with Beyond in the cafeteria. I believe Lainey referred to this as the Dork Outreach program in scene six.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Hanging with the cool kids is worth $100 million to Wall Street. So Beyond's changing literally nothing about its product. It's just sitting with the cool kid. And now a word from our sponsor, Robin Hood. Nick, you got introduced to the Robin Hood app the old-fashioned way, right? Yeah, I did. My girlfriend now wife's older brother, who was that guy who worked in tech and, like, knew about the next iPhone before Apple did. He told you about the Robin Hood app.
Starting point is 00:10:01 You told me about the Robin Hood app. All right. So you signed up because you. wanted to buy a stock. Because like it was hard to figure out how to buy a stock when you're 25 and it's 2014. Yeah, back then you had to find a broker, call a broker on the phone, call them, pay a commission to that broker. Instead of calling suddenly there's this app, you just swipe and you could buy the stock. Robin Hood's interface felt as easy as ordering an Uber or snagging a sandwich on Seamus. And it still is. So if you're not a Robin Hood user yet and you want to get started, you can go to
Starting point is 00:10:27 Robinhood.com slash T-Boy and you can choose get this, a free stock. That's robinood.com slash B-B-O-Y. Certain limitations apply and all investments involve risk. Robin Hood Financial LLC, member S-I-P-C. Robin Hood, by the way, no longer affiliated with us or the podcast. For our third and final story, Walmart just announced shocking progress on drone delivery. Walmart. Walmart. And the next wave of infrastructure, I got to tell you, it's invisible.
Starting point is 00:10:59 You can't see where to go, where to go. Is it here? Now, first let's start with how Walmart became the biggest reason. teller in the world. Jack, three words, none of them are sexy. Relentless operational efficiency. Arkansas State slogan. Yeah, Walmart. They basically lowered prices with scale. They focused on frugality and they had historically low wages. And the only thing they invested in were blue vests. True. But they have raised wages recently. They have. They have. And because of Walmart's relentless operational efficiency, since 2001, so 21 years, Walmart has been the number one company in
Starting point is 00:11:35 America by sales. It's not Amazon. But wait, there's now some competition with Amazon. They're getting closer. Yeah. And Walmart has to get techy because of it. Well, Tuesday's news revealed a pretty big surprise. Walmart has shockingly become pretty techy. Last year, Walmart invested in a startup called drone up. Yeah, they did. And they did drone testing in Arkansas. Well, here's the news. Walmart just expanded that drone delivery from just Arkansas to 34 stores across six different states. That's right. Certain Walmarts in Arizona, Florida, Texas, Utah, and Virginia now have launch pads outside of Isle 6th. Yeah, if you're a Yeti and you're in one of these states and you see one of these launch pads, like we want to see a pick. Like, tweet us at T-Boy Pod.
Starting point is 00:12:18 The launch pad is to send a drone up with a package up to 10 pounds in weight. No more or less. Which can reach 4 million households within these drones range. And then the drones, they just literally hover over your backyard. You see them come down. This is straight out of a Tom Cruise movie. Yeah, they don't land. They just send the package down with a court.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Actually, it's kind of like him in Mission Impossible now in picture. You know what I mean? They get really close to the floor. Or it's kind of like a toy story. Backa. Jack, what happens to be the most popular item for drone delivery in the state of Arkansas?
Starting point is 00:12:50 Yeah, they've been doing this in Arkansas for a while. And hamburger helper is a frequently droned delivery item. Just something about Bolognazzi at altitude. It's better for the, for the Al dente. So again, Walmart beat Amazon, Google, FedEx to drone delivery at scale, which this is. And it's because of the same three unsexy words that made the number one in retail. What are the, Jack? Relentless operational efficiency. Doesn't even sound fun to say. So Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at Walmart? The next wave of
Starting point is 00:13:24 infrastructure is invisible. Yeah, besties, yeties to transport by train and truck, we needed rail and roads. And we got power lines and pipes and people. Very physical, very visible infrastructure. And that's stuff. It needs repair. And it had to get a bill passed by Congress to fix all the cracks. But the next wave of infrastructure we got to deal with is invisible infrastructure. We're talking 5G internet instead of phone lines. Invisible maps for self-driving cars instead of road signs. And flying drones instead of highways. Walmart. Walmart. Walmart.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Shockingly is first to see. set up drone infrastructure at scale. And it's invisible. Jack, can you whip up the takeaways for us over there? Snapchat, just warned Wall Street. They're going to make less money at this quarter. Yeah, they didn't say it, but we wish they'd said it. They kind of should have said it.
Starting point is 00:14:17 They wanted to say it. Recession. Voldemort. For our second story, Beyond Meat, has a new chief taste consultant. It's Kim Kardashian. Yeah, Kim. She's Freddie Prince, Jr. And she's sitting in public with Beyond Meat over in the cafeteria,
Starting point is 00:14:32 For our third and final story, Walmart is delivering by drone to 4 million eligible households in the US. And the next wave of infrastructure? It's invisible. Now time for the best fact yet, this one sent in by J.C. Karim over in Laverne, California. T-B-O-Y fact is that Plato was actually supposed to be a wall cleaner, not a toy. Okay, so Jack and I jumped in T-boy style further when J.C. sent us this fact. All right. It was invented in 1922 by a soap company with the specific
Starting point is 00:15:12 purpose of cleaning wallpaper. But here's the thing. Plato, it didn't totally work as a wallpaper cleaner. So the entrepreneur got the rights to Plato. Yeah. And pivoted the product. And Plato went from a wall cleaner to the best toy ever invented on earth. I think J.C. can agree with me. It's got a very particular smell. Okay. I was thinking the same thing. Jack, the next pivot for Plato, fragrance, perfumes, deodorants, you name it. That was like April Fool's Deodorants? Plato, it's a lifestyle choice. Besties, yetis, you look fantastic today.
Starting point is 00:15:46 And if you haven't yet, and you want to hang out with us every day, click to follow us right here on Spotify app. Nick and I, we'll see you tomorrow. Can't wait. And before we go, just a heartfelt goodbye to the last payphone in New York City, which was just removed from Times Square. It's going to a museum. If you're a superhero and you need to change, you're going to have to like book of rumors.
Starting point is 00:16:11 iPhones can't do this. And happy birthday to Alex Mall down in Jacksonville, Florida. And Leslie Ray is in La Habra, California. Happy first birthday to Pierce Benson in Chandler, Arizona. Yeah, Pierce was listening to us in utero. Thanks to Pierce's parents for getting them hooked young. And Eva Escado, happy birthday on the south side of Houston. And happy birthday to Sophia Mueller in Miami, Florida.
Starting point is 00:16:36 And congratulations to Emily Brinkman graduated from HBS and then going to work at Wayfair. As we said, some company based in Boston. And Nico and Owen are graduating from college, but haven't forgotten Miss Whitaker's math. And congratulations to Teddy and Lauren for Brattleboro, Vermont, for finally getting a fence in the backyard. Oh, little Ted, baby Greta appreciates that privacy. And congrats to Hannah 1H Glansman, no palindrome here, who's starting anesthesiology at the school at Northe Her job is to literally put people to sleep. This is Jack. Nick owned stock of Beyond Me, and we both own stock of Robin Hood and Peloton.
Starting point is 00:17:18 And now a word from our sponsor, Robin Hood. The first time I tried to buy a stock, I got burned badly. Is this when you wanted to buy a share of Ford? Because you like the chassis over in Detroit? Yes, I had $200, so I bought $200 of Ford stock. I didn't get $200 of Ford stock, though. I got $192. Ah, the commission fees.
Starting point is 00:17:37 By the time the stock climbed back to $200, I sold it, but again, I didn't get $200. I got $192 again. Another commission fee. The stock rose 8%, but I was down on my investment. Because commission fees made small money investing impossible. So Robin Hood came in and killed commission fees. And commissions are still dead in stock and crypto trading thanks to our sponsor. If you're not investing on Robin Hood yet, to get started, go to robin hood.com slash t-boy and choose a free stock.
Starting point is 00:18:04 That's robin hood.com slash t-b-o-y. certain limitations apply for a list of other fees. View their fee schedule at RBNHD.co slash fees. All investments involve risk. Robinette Financial LLC, member SIPC. Oh, and by the way, Robinette is no longer affiliated with us or the podcast. And the stocks Jack just said are for illustrative purposes only and are not recommendations. Besties, Yeties, while Jack and I were recording this pod yesterday, we got a push notification that many you probably got too. Yeah, there was a shooting at an elementary school in Texas and 14 at least were killed.
Starting point is 00:18:38 So there's just not much Jack and I can say about this other than the immense sadness we feel every time we get one of these. And it's just painful to get another one. If you happen to have children, give them an extra hug today. If you have parents, give them an extra hug today.
