Episode Date: January 28, 2022

We’re looking at Apple’s earnings and only seeing 1 thing: Atlas Pose (and Marshawn Lynch). McDonald’s newest menu is a hack — it was literally designed by you (ever heard of “McSurf&Turf?...). And HackerOne raised $49M because it connects big companies with “ethical hackers”... to hack those big companies. On purpose.$AAPL $MCD $MSFTGot a SnackFact? Starting point is 00:00:00 I don't think you've ever potted with a scarf. I feel like that thing's about to take over the microphone. This is Nick, this is Jack. This is scarf. I don't feel like myself with this thing out. I'll be honest. Also, I feel like I'm part of this evolution of your fashion. It was turtleneck so we could go with scars today.
Starting point is 00:00:15 I feel like you're going to bring out a handkerchief next week. I don't know what's going on. My neck game is strong. Potting with a Frenchman. Here we go. Three, two. This is Nick. This is Jack.
Starting point is 00:00:25 And this is Snacks Daily. It is Friday. It is Friday. It's a Friday, January 28. T-B-I-F-T-B-O-I. This is the best one yet. How was your salmon yesterday? We're having salmon twice a week this year.
Starting point is 00:00:38 I'm loving it. That a New Year's resolution. That's fantastic. It kind of is. Cedar plank, soy glaze, creamy dill, casserole, marinate. What's going on here? I do them all. Honestly, salmon's delicious.
Starting point is 00:00:47 I can't believe I didn't discover it till I was 30. Chef Boy, R-D. Here we go. Jack, what's our first story? Apple. Just announced their quarterly earnings. And Apple is pulling an atlas pose. Snackers, Apple?
Starting point is 00:00:58 They are carrying the entire. stock market on their back right now. Timmy Cook on their eyeback. On the iBacks. For our second story, McDonald's just announced their earnings too. But the real story is their new menu. Here's the wild thing. You designed the new menu at McDonald's. For our third and final story, Hacker 1, just raised $49 million in a private funding round because they're a platform for bug bounties. Big companies apparently pay big money to get hacked on purpose. But before we hit that wonderful mix. Fantastic mix to end the week on.
Starting point is 00:01:32 I love this mix, Jack. It's Friday night. Maybe you're lucky and it's date night. Yeah, date night. You know what's the worst though? When you get ghosted. Absolutely the worst. Everything was going well, Nick.
Starting point is 00:01:42 It seemed fun, you know? And then Mr. or Mrs. Wright went MIA on YOU. Funny thing Nick and I noticed from the dating app coincidentally called snack. The dating app snack. They have anti-ghosting software. AGS? AGS. A-Gosting software.
Starting point is 00:01:58 I've always. I've been looking for some AGS. It's a good thing. Snack, which we're proud to have the same name as, found a way to solve the ghosting problem of dating. Here's the new feature. If you ghost a date, then the app ghost your profile. Let's say Jim and Jill scheduled dinner for tonight, Friday night.
Starting point is 00:02:15 But Jim doesn't show up. He's a no show. And then he never texts Jill again about it. We could have gone with Jack and Jill, but that would have been confusing on this podcast. I don't think that would have worked. I'm glad we went with Jim. I'm glad we didn't go with Jack and Jill because in this case, Jim is the way. worst. Yeah, Jim is ghosting. So here's what's going to go down. Jim's dating app profile is going to
Starting point is 00:02:34 disappear from the app's matches. The snack app is going to punish Jim for ghosting Jill. Yeah, because if you ghost, they make you a ghost. This is Pollyside 101. Fight ghosting with more ghosting. Jack, I think this goes back to Sun Su's art of war. He who ghosteth, get ghosteth. On the snack app, basic manners and common human decency, they're a requirement. Are basic manners and human decency too much to ask for, people? If they are too much to ask for, go ahead and ghost, but you're getting ghosted on the snack app. It's your last day. Ghost get ghosted. Let's hit our three stories that aren't texting us back. Or not hit our three stories and disappear. You're tuned in the snacks daily. We spoke to the lawyers and we got to get something legal out the way. The snacks about to hear
Starting point is 00:03:16 food is air candy. They don't reflect the views of the robberhood family. It's all informational just so you know. We're not recommending any securities. It's not a research report or investment advice. offer or sale of a security. Right. Snacks is digestible. Business news for you. Robberhood Financial, LLC, member Fenra slash SIPC.
Starting point is 00:03:39 For our first story, how do you like them? Apple's set record sales and profits despite chips and ships and other problems. If not for Apple and Microsoft, honestly, we'd all be hurting a lot more in the stock market than we are. Okay, Jack and I had to sit down, stand up and sit back down again when we heard these earnings numbers. get this, Apple's revenue was $124 billion with a B dollars. Just for the quarter. Just for the three months of October, November, and December. Yeah, $124 billion.
Starting point is 00:04:10 That's like, you know, 10 lifts. This earnings report is a reminder that Christmas was just a month ago because guess how many iPhones were gifted in the holiday quarter? We have to do a posit. We have to wait. People have to like guess this. Guess how many iPhones were gifted just in the last three months. If you're within a digit, I'll be impressed.
Starting point is 00:04:29 $72 billion worth of iPhones were gifted. $1,000 a pop. That is 72 million iPhones gifted this Christmas. People, we mean that Apple, they're selling almost one million iPhones every single day. Okay, you all know Apple's the number one most valuable company in the world. Their revenues last quarter was easily double the number two most valuable company, Microsoft. It's like Babe Ruth and whoever was number two.
Starting point is 00:04:54 In the meantime, Apple, they saw sales grow across every single product line, except for iPads. Except for iPads. It's actually the first time I ever bought an iPad. So not even me. Who's using an iPad these days? It's like your mom to take a photo of something in an awkward way. No, Nick, I told you, I got an iPad now. It's actually in our kitchen and we watch TV while we're cooking.
Starting point is 00:05:16 It's really convenient. Did you order it yourself or was it a gift from the in-laws? We ordered it ourselves. Oh, that's impressive. Okay. Actually, factory refurbished. There we go. A couple hundred dollars.
Starting point is 00:05:24 That's a supply circle, not a supply chain. Okay, Snackers. Apple, though, Apple's really an iPhone company. Actually, Apple, we like to call iPhone Inc. Yeah, I'm like the only one buying an iPad because over half of sales are from the iPhone. And honestly, it didn't matter that, you know, iPhone 13 is so similar to iPhone 12 that honestly, we have no idea what the difference is. What did matter a little was the supply chain, which heard Apple a little last quarter. Apple did complain that slow ships cost it more than $6 billion in lost sales. Some Snackers listening on AirPods right now would be AirPods Pro if only that cargo ship sailed a little faster to port.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Somewhere four nautical miles off the coast of Los Angeles, your AirPods pros are just sitting in a box in a container. This stock jumped 5%. Would have jumped 6% if those AirPods pros got delivered. So Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies just doing apparently really big things over at Apple? Apple and Microsoft are pulling an Atlas. They're carrying the whole market on their backs. Okay, now Snackers, Jack and I are in Greek mythology snobs. But Apple, it's kind of like Atlas here.
Starting point is 00:06:26 It's like that statue, you know, that bends over holding the entire globe on its back. And Microsoft is Marshawn Lynch, carrying like seven New Orleans Saints on his back into the end zone for a touchdown. So whether you're going with the NFL or Greek mythology, both Apple and Microsoft, they just reported earnings. And they were both very solid earnings. Now, Microsoft's and Apple, both of their stocks are down about 10% this year. But the average tech stock, it's down more than twice that. and Apple and Microsoft, they make up a combined 10% of the entire S&P 500 stock index. So if those two stocks were down as much as their tech buddies were?
Starting point is 00:07:01 Yeah, there'd be a lot more stock market paint to go around these days. Now, their legs are starting to shake a little bit. But Apple and Microsoft are still carrying the rest of the markets on their back. Like Atlas or Marshawn Lynch. For our second story, Jack has transitioned his Liam Neeson-shaped scarf into like an Amelia Earhart a raft around the neck kind of a thing. There's no feeling that's more satisfying the tossing the tail of the scarf over your shoulder. I think you look great, man. Snackers, we'll keep you updated on the status of the scarf.
Starting point is 00:07:32 In the meantime, second story, McDonald's just revealed a new menu, and it's not the old menu, and it's not a celebrity menu. It's completely different. It's a menu of your menu hacks, which might be the greatest corporate hack of all. By the way, we should clarify, Snackers. This hack, we're not talking like computer chips. We're talking like potato chips and your turkey sandwich kind of a thing. Yeah, the computer chips hacker. That's the third story coming up in a second. Yeah, you'll have to wait for that one.
Starting point is 00:07:56 In the meantime, grab a bib and some barbecue sauce. McDonald's, they just announced earnings. They were pretty, pretty good. Sure, the price of vegetable oil and potatoes is up. So Ron McDonald had to jack up the prices of McRibb and fries too. Yeah, but people are willing to pay more. Sales are up 12% of McDonald's, profits up 19%. Both are higher than they were pre-pandemic.
Starting point is 00:08:15 According to CNN, McDonald's sales were highest. since the Clinton administration. But the real focus we're curious about is the celebrity menus, which jacked up sales by double digits again. Like the BTS meal and the Mariah Caremeal. But the real story we're most curious about is the other new menu that McDonald's is launching now.
Starting point is 00:08:32 This new menu is called the hack menu. The hack menu. In-app, in-store, this is four items designed by regular McDonald's diners. Now, here's what Jack and I find so fascinating about the McDonald's hack menu. McDonald's basically outsourced, its R&D team to TikTok.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Here's what the hack menu is. It's just a bunch of popular off-menu requests from diners. And McDonald's is putting them on the menu now. Yeah, they basically went on social media and just said, hey, whatever's freaky? Let's throw that on the menu. Jack, can you please tell us, please, about the new crunchy double at McDonald's.
Starting point is 00:09:06 That is just a cheeseburger with six chicken McNuggets snuck in there under the burger pack. Are you allowed to mix animals like that? I don't even know if that's street legal. Okay, that's the crunchy double. Jack, can you tell us about? the surf and turf. We're sophisticated.
Starting point is 00:09:20 A double cheeseburger, a filet of fish living between one pair of buns. And Jack, how about the land, air, and sea? This is a Big Mac, a chicken sandwich, and a fish filet. You know how the Big Mac has like five layers already? This one has like nine layers of stuff. You're going to lift with your legs now with your back.
Starting point is 00:09:38 This is on par with the Olive Garden Tour of Italy, which is chicken parm, lasagna, and Fetuccini-Alfredo on one place. It's Italy in your gut. Now, the names on this hack menu, they kind of sound like a bunch of sushi rolls obsessed with adjectives. Sure, the surf and turf, the crunchy double. They're better, though, than the celebrity meals because we made them up and we like things we make up. There's nothing you like more than talking about yourself, people. So Travis Scott, Suweedy, those McDonald's meals, those were nice, but you prefer a McEU meal.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Now, I've always ordered half Pepsi and half Diet Pepsi in one cup. I wish they'd add that to the Hackman. Yeah, they could and call it the Mayat Pepsi. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies doing the hack meal over at McDonald's? Some of the greatest innovations create nothing. Snackers, never forget that. A hack menu? It's no different than what drives social media.
Starting point is 00:10:28 This is user-generated content. Facebook is a trillion-dollar biggest publisher in the world. They don't publish any of their own stuff. It's user-generated. It's the same with McDonald's new hack menu. This is the same food McDonald's was already making. They're just repackaging it for you. In fact, McDonald's employees, they don't even craft these menu items.
Starting point is 00:10:48 They just hand you the raw materials you need so that you can craft them at your table. Right. Jack, if you walk in and order the surf and turf, they're going to give you a burger and a fillet of fish and then you got to put it together yourself. They said that's like half the fun. You're going to end up with an extra set of buns. Just yesterday, the CEO of McDonald's said that's what he loves about this new hack menu. It's that it's creating something new without adding any complexity for McDonald's. And it's experiential dining.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Oh, it's totally experiential. Snackers, McDonald's, they spent zero hours designing this new menu because you created the combos. It works. It's an innovation and they didn't create anything new. The greatest corporate hack of all. For our third and final story before the weekend, bug bounties. They're already a thing. But Hacker 1 has turned bug bounties into a scalable business. If you're afraid of getting hacked, everyone is. You go to Hacker 1. To get hacked. On purpose.
Starting point is 00:11:41 So Jack and I jumped in Snacks style to Hector. hacker one. And it's basically like an English major buddy who is a ruthless editor. The sophomore year, you had that term paper on Pride and Prejudice. You weren't sure about it. You hand it to Katie. She rips that thesis apart with Redd In. She's like, you think the thing about 19th century social mores and Darcy are actually going to expand upon this. No, it's not happening. It's not happening. Here's the thing. Here's the thing that. Katie is ruthless with your paper so that the teacher doesn't have to be. That way the teacher can't any errors and you get an A because Katie already found them. Hacker 1, it's applying the same
Starting point is 00:12:17 concept to cybersecurity. Yeah, they're connecting with companies with ruthless hackers, but these hackers happen to be ethical hackers. They're coders with a conscience. And Hacker 1, they just raised $49 million because every company relies on computers. Every company could get hacked, so every company needs a hacker. Now, Snackers, there's a secret of world that's going on inside of big companies right now. To protect themselves from getting hacked, they pay. to get hacked. Okay, we're talking Starbucks, General Motors, Hyatt Hotels, even the United States Department of Defense, they all use Hacker 1, and here's how they use Hacker 1 to protect from hacking. Hacker 1 sends a swarm of computer whizzes who jump on their machines and digitally pounce
Starting point is 00:12:59 on Hacker 1's clients cloud. Picture the Undead Army fighting to penetrate Winterfell, Hacker's penetrating company systems instead. Over 1,000 brands have paid Hacker 1 for that one week cybersecurity swarm. Because they spotted and resolved 230,000 security vulnerabilities like maybe a security bug inside the Starbucks app that could be a problem. Now, an evil hacker might recognize that open door that some Starbucks coder left and sees their critical data of Starbucks customers and hold the company and their systems ransom. Starbucks, I want a latte for life for the rest of my life. Starbucks hopes it's not the evil hacker, but the hacker one hacker who identifies it. Because they're going to tell Starbucks's VP of cybersecurity so they can fix it.
Starting point is 00:13:43 And then that hacker will just get paid a straightforward amount. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at Hacker 1? Anything can become a marketplace, even hacking. Yeah. In the tech world Snackers, there's actually this like totally delightful thing that's called a bug bounty. Companies will pay random hackers who are ethical who find problems and tell them about it. Yeah, because it's cheaper to pay an ethical hacker now than it is to pay an evil
Starting point is 00:14:10 hackers ransom later. Lifetime Lottes. Google has a well-known bug bounty and they pay out millions of dollars every year to rando hackers who give Google a heads up that there's a problem with one of their things. But here's the problem. Not every company knows how to set up a bug bounty system. And not every company is so Googily as Google. Yeah. And not every hacker wants to go around hacking all day and being evil. So Hacker 1 connects ethical hackers. Want to get paid with companies that don't want to get hacked, but are willing to pay a bunch of money. So there's even a marketplace for hacking. Jack, can you and that cashmere, whip up the takeaways for us before the weekend? It is cashmere. Thank you. And it's also negative 10 degrees here still.
Starting point is 00:14:52 No, it's fair. You should ensconce yourself. Thank you. Apple earnings were insane last quarter. The stock jump 5%. Apple and Microsoft, the two biggest companies are holding the markets on their back like Atlas and Marshaun Lynch. Or our second story, McDonald's earnings were quite good. The hack menu is even better. Yeah, the May at Pepsi. Some of the greatest innovations, they don't require creating anything new. For our third and final story, Hacker 1 has raised over $160 million to hack companies on purpose ethically. They can even make a marketplace for hacking. Now, time for a snack fact of the day.
Starting point is 00:15:26 This one sent in by Brian Tuys from Orlando, Florida, who he just turned 30. Happy birthday, Brian. Once you hit 30, you're 26% less likely to make a New Year's resolution. But here's the good thing. If you do make a New Year's resolution and you're 30, you're 26% more likely to stick to it. So I'm 26% more likely to eat salmon twice a week. I'm going to say lunch, dinner, like you're having this thing, three different meals, thrown in a smoothie bowl.
Starting point is 00:15:51 I think this explains why Steph Curry is making so many threes this year. Because he eats so much salmon? I think it was a New Year's resolution to beat Reggie Miller's record. Snackers, you look fantastic all week. And trust us, Jack and I will never ghost you. But if you want to rate and review us, we would love that on Apple or Spotify. Remember, this is the snacks. Daily podcast, not the Snacks Daily Dating app.
Starting point is 00:16:10 But both deserve five stars. We'll see you Monday. Have a great weekend. Can't wait. And before we go, happy birthday to Otto, the border collie puppy turning five over in Illinois. And happy birthday to Kyrie Hamm in San Francisco. And Isaiah, the dad, Gomer. Happy birthday down in Paso-Robles, California. And happy birthday, Mark Gaspar in Chicago.
Starting point is 00:16:31 And Trend Wisco, who's going flying for his birthday over in Minnesota. Happy birthday, Ethan, in Oklahoma City. And Carrie's shoe, enjoy the birthday down in Houston. And Siana Arieta in Waco, Texas. And happy birthday, Sondro over down the street in San Francisco. Happy birthday, Abinov Mishra in Santa Clara, California. And Eric Flores in Woodstock, Illinois. Big congrats to Ye and Tom, who are moving in together in Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Oh, and Mitchell and Allison Waxman Jack? They're moving together all the way to New Orleans. Get this. Chris and Sarah of Red Dirt Dancing are dancing together every day forever. That's their New Year's resolution. Chrissy and Cam, they just had their two-year anniversary over in Sacramento. And to anyone else celebrating something today, make it a T-Bull. Celebrate the wins all weekend. This is Jack, Nick owned stock of Apple.
