Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Nick. This is Jack. And this is Snacks Daily. Welcome back. It is Monday, January 10th. Week 2 of 2020. And how is 2020 looking, Jack? Not good.
Starting point is 00:00:10 Isn't that great? What's that good? Docs fell for the first week of 2020. By the way, if you were looking for one of our leftover wedding registry cheeseboards, I'm out of the wedding registry cheeseboards. You got to DM Jack for these things because I don't have anymore. Today's cheese board. Today's pot is the best one yet.
Starting point is 00:00:24 The Gouda goes here. The Montecho goes here. The gray air goes there. For our first story, liquid death is a water company. Yeah. They make cans of 18. But those cans look like death, so they're worth $500 million. For our second story, TikTok was the most downloaded app of 2021, and it's making the biggest
Starting point is 00:00:40 leap yet. TikTok is going from your phone to the TV in your dentist's office. Third and final story. A hundred-year-old British car company Bentley. They just set another record for cars. Another. Mega wealthy toys. They are having a mega moment.
Starting point is 00:00:56 But Snackers, before we hit that mix. Great to be back from the weekend. It's hoarder's Almanac, week 100? Checking the whiteboard. Let me see. It's week 94. Week 94. Things we're running out of because of the pandemic.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Snackers, this week, we're not running out of cream cheese. We're not running out of clowns. We're not running out of toilet paper. We're running out of chocolate milk. We are running out of chocolate milk according to an update from Snacker Chris up in Maine. This is actually a warning from one farm in Maine. That's apparently a leading indicator. Snackers, we're talking about the OG dessert breakfast, which has gone MIA.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Count Chocula is very. Freaking out. What is my chocolate trade now? Remember the little half-pike cartons you get at the cafeteria in school? You would like trade your homework answers just to get an extra chocolate milk from your buddy, you accidentally open the carton on the wrong side. But you drink it anyway. And then it's like all over your finger and you're like pressing it and the cardboard gets all the way.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Here's the funny thing though. We're not running out of milk. It's strange, but we're not running out of chocolate either. We're running out of the powder that binds the two together. We're talking the special ingredient that helps the chocolate. and the milk form a kumbaya in your cup. We're running out of the chocolate milk middleman. This is a tiny part of the chocolate milk,
Starting point is 00:02:07 but it is a crucial part of the chocolate milk. Without it, the chocolate globs up at the top of the milk, clinging to the side of the glass like barnacles on the side of a sea schooner. Get a hold of yourself. Snackers, we're not running out of chocolate and milk. We're running out of chocolate milk. If you've got a half pint of chocolate milk, for darn sake, float bubbles in it. Because you're one of the lucky few.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Let's hit our three stories. You're tuned in the snacks daily. We spoke to the lawyers and we got to get something legal out the way. The snacks about to hear ain't food. It's air candy. They don't reflect the views of the Robberhood family. It's all informational just so. We're not recommending any securities.
Starting point is 00:02:45 It's not a research report or investment advice. Not an offer or sale of a security. Snacks is digestible. Business news for you. Robberhood Financial, LLC, member FINRA, SIPC. For our first story, Liquid Death, just became a half a billion dollar canned water startup. Liquid Death is the perfect case study in branding.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Okay, Jack, first of all, Aquavina, Desan, Evian, Peria. Water brands honestly sound like meditation apps. It is due. Breathe in, two, three, oh, four, old, namaste. But three-year-old Los Angeles-based canned water company Liquid Death has a motto that, Jack, Can you just share the motto? Murder your thirst. That's what their motto is.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Fastest growing water brand over at Whole Foods. This company, Liquid Death, did $3 million in sales in 2019. Jack, how many sales did they do last year? $45 million. And on that kind of crazy growth, they were able to raise $75 million from venture capitalists. And now they're worth half a billion dollars this brand. But here's what Jack and I find fascinating about Liquid Death. They only make two products.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Water. Yep. And sparkling water. That is it. The only ingredients here are like hydrogen. and two oxygens. Oh, that's it. Pretty much.
Starting point is 00:03:59 You throw those two together and you're getting the only two products they make. Liquid death should be in every marketing 101 class because the branding they've pulled off. Yeah. Wow. That is a case study in branding. Water is a commodity.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Literally 98% of you is water. H2. Literally all water. It looks. It tastes the same. I mean, it's just there. It's the same as it was two million years ago. You're drinking it.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Polar bears are drinking it. Two cans are drinking it. But liquid death took a product that defines life. and made it all about death. For example, Jack, can we talk about the black can? It's not a plastic bottle like most water. No, it's not. This can looks like it was designed by Stephen King and Metallica.
Starting point is 00:04:37 It looks like it went out of its way to kill a LaCroix. The logo isn't a deer, gracefully sipping water from a majestic pond. It is medieval letters that feature a raging skull with flesh dripping off of it. Is it a drink? I don't know, or is it a Black Sabbath album? This drink tastes like how Iron Maiden sounds. It also has a mascot, this brand. They call it their chief sustainability associate.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Yes. Who is a merman who hates plastic bottles. Okay, so Snackers, like one of the fastest growing beverages in the country doesn't have a function, doesn't have a taste, doesn't do anything special at all. It is water that looks like water. So you're not buying the water for the water. You're buying the water just for the can. It's great brand. Feels like a takeaway moment.
Starting point is 00:05:19 So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at Liquid Death? Liquid Death used a can to solve a social problem. Snackers, here's a takeaway. the reality right now. The expectation in many social situations, it's that you're going to have an alcoholic drink. You're out with friends. Somebody's got a beer. Somebody's got a cocktail. The other has a glass of water. And here's the problem. If you don't order one of those alcoholic drinks, unfortunately, you might get like a bunch of stares and questions. Just a thing. Oh, you're not getting a drink? What's wrong? Oh, are you sick? Jack, remember? We were out the other night. I got an
Starting point is 00:05:50 Earl Grey tea. Is that a cross? You shouldn't have to defend yourself for ordering a non-alcoholic drink. No, you should. That's why we find it so fascinating about Liquid Death. Their tallboy can looks like it's a hardcore IP. Or you got the latest Spike Seltzer beer garita over at Coachella. So Liquid Death's can and branding, it helps water drinkers blend in among alcohol drinks. It lets you hydrate without drawing unwanted attention. Liquid Death is just water. It's H2L. But the can solves a social problem. For our second story, huge move. TikTok is coming to your TV, aka the other big screen. What is TV?
Starting point is 00:06:28 I know you mean. TV. It's just a bigger screen than the other screens you have. Anyone here from out of town? It sounds like you're doing standing. I like where you're going with this, though, Jack. Snackers, though. Jack and I should...
Starting point is 00:06:38 What's the deal with TVs? We should sprinkle out of the little context here. First of all, every pitch deck for an app startup in the last 10 years, it has one thing on slide number one. Built mobile first. We built this mobile first from the ground up. This was designed. primarily to look good on your phone. Well, TikTok was one of those apps that was designed mobile first. TikTok started as karaoke and dance videos. It evolved to self-help videos, comedy videos, literally any
Starting point is 00:07:07 videos. And then people wanted to watch TikTok videos on their computers. So now there's a TikTok website. And then you and your buddies wanted to TikTok together. So in November, TikTok launched apps for smart TVs. But the latest news is the strangest extension of all of us. TikTok is expanding to screens outside of your home. Snackers, Jack and I notice that TikTok now has a partnership with a company called Atmosphere. Atmospheric does programming for screens in like waiting areas. Jack, can we whip up a little image of this? The screen in the back of the taxi tank.
Starting point is 00:07:41 We're on the gas pump. Stuff you want to mute usually. The screens in the doctor's office or in the elevator. All of those screens that are in your public life, they're now going to have TikTok video. TikTok isn't just an app. No. It's acting like its own TV channel now. An atmosphere is going to curate the top TikTok videos for you to watch on TV, like when you're at the dent.
Starting point is 00:08:00 While you're waiting to get your number six in size are pulled, you'd love a distraction from corporate Natalie's TikTok skips. But here's the important thing TikTok recognized. They recognize that mobile first doesn't mean mobile only. TikTok has become screen agnostic. Yes, they want an open relationship with any screen. Doesn't matter who you are. Three billion phone downloads of TikTok. Yeah. But they're not committed just to phone. Yeah, on the other end of the spectrum, you got what happened to Quibi. Quibi made the horrible mistake in 2020 of being mobile only. Yeah, they wouldn't let you watch all of that Quibi like phone content on your TV.
Starting point is 00:08:36 You literally could not. They went out of business in less than a year. So TikTok is doing the opposite of Quibi's mobile only strategy. Forget your phone. TikTok is now on every single screen out there, basically except for movie theaters. Except for drive-ins. Yeah. The ambitions of TikTok are that.
Starting point is 00:08:52 big. So, Jack, what is the takeaway for our buddies over TikTok? Don't kill the TV, but can we kill the word TV? What is a TV? Television. Are you TV? Who are you? We should call it a shmovie box. It should be a schmovey box. It's really just another big screen. TVs used to be defined by the channels. Yes. And you got channels by connecting your TV to an antenna to the cable or to your dish. You're on a roll. But today, get this Snackers, 80% of houses have a smart TV. That's right. The TV has evolved to be an internet connected screen. It's basically like any phone or tablet. The TV isn't focused on channels anymore. It's got apps.
Starting point is 00:09:31 So we're thinking, why don't we just retire the word TV? Because it's just a bigger screen. It's just a huge tablet or a gigantic phone. TikTok knows this. They do. That's why they're screen agnostic. It's not a TV. It's just a big screen. For our third and final story, Jack's just happy we're not saying the word media again.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Let's kill the word media. He doesn't like the word media. Er is in media. Bentley, the ultra luxury car company, they just had their best year of sales again. Yachts, private jets, sports cars. That is what is exciting records right. Okay, first of all, when Jack and I were in Naples, Florida together last week,
Starting point is 00:10:09 we saw more than our fair share of Bentley. The Bentley to human ratio down there is unprecedented. It's almost, can we say it's unhealthy? Yeah, I checked the price of Bentley on my phone. Oh, what did you say? The website immediately says, are you a left steering wheel person or right stealing wear a person? Sir or madam. If you have to ask, you can afford it.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Yeah, Snackers, early shout out, happy birthday to Bentley. They're turning 103 next week. It's one of the first car companies to use aluminum. Yes. Which is lighter than steel. But today, it's more like platinum because the starting price of a Bentley is a whopping $180,000. Bentley's are some of the most rare and expensive cars in the world. You see this thing?
Starting point is 00:10:49 you're like, is that a snow leopard or is that a Bentley? And here's the news. For the second straight year, they set record sales at Bentley. Now, we know you think at Snackers, okay, they set a sales record, but they only sold 15,000 Bentley's last year across the entire planet. But they go for about five times the price of the average car. So they don't need to sell as many. Now, we talk about Ford, GM, Tesla, Toyota, all the time.
Starting point is 00:11:13 What about the valet-only cars? Valle only cars. Snackers, we're talking a segment of cars. They only take premium unleaded. Where the buyer isn't driving. The buyer's looking out the window in the backseat. Bentley is a key one of these valet-only cars. They were founded in the UK back in 1919.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Now Bentley is owned by publicly traded German Volkswagen. And Italian Lamborghini, German Porsche, a couple other valet cars, also owned by Volkswagen. What about Rolls-Royce? Also owned by a German company, BMW. On the other hand, you got James Bond's Aston Martin, which is actually its own publicly traded company over in London. So is Ferrari. The own publicly traded company with the ticker symbol.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Great ticker. Race. Yeah, you have the honors. Ultra luxury car brands are scattered across the world and the stock market. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies who are the valet only cars like Bentley? 2020 is starting out with one segment on top. Wealth. Yeah, Snackers, the numbers are in to start the year.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Real estate to stocks, wealth assets are soaring. The stuff of inheritances and mega wealth are living their best lives. Okay, Jack, the S&P 500, the whole stock market, it rose 20. 27% last year. And that follows 16% and 29% gains the two years prior. That stock market number, those are big numbers. And it's similar with homes. Median U.S. home prices jumped 19% last year. That's why the ultra wealthy are starting 2022 as the extra wealthy. So demand for wealthy toys is higher than ever. We're talking private jet, super yacht and sports cars. Bentley's winning because whoever's in the back seat of a Bentley is winning too. Jack, can you find us some chocolate?
Starting point is 00:12:49 Clinton Bell can whip up the takeaways over there. Liquid death's product is water. Their genius is the cans. Their can solves a social problem. For our second story, forget phones. TikTok wants an open relationship with any screen. Like the TV, but like what is a TV anyway? It's just a big screen. Kill the word TV. For our third and final story, Bentley just set a record sales year again. Bentley is winning because the person getting driven is winning. Now, time for our snack fact of the day. This one sent in by Sunagu, Ichikawa, and Lulf. New York City. We call it uppercase and lowercase, right? Yeah, the letters.
Starting point is 00:13:23 We call them uppercase and lowercase letters. Like a big T versus a little T. And the reason we call them these things, it's actually because it typewriters. Ages ago, the metal letter stamps that typed letters with ink, they would have to be manually changed from uppercase to lowercase. And those stamps used to be placed inside cases like suitcases. And get this. The big letters, like the capital letters.
Starting point is 00:13:45 The uppercase letters. They used to be on the top of the case, the uppercase. Uh-huh. And the small letters would be on the bottom. The lowercase. That's it. And that's how we get the uppercase and the lower case. Perfectly sensible.
Starting point is 00:13:55 It works so well. Hey, Mr. SAT, can you make like a funny word joke here? How punctilious of you, Jack? Now, Snackers, before we go, Barry Evina. Two, three. Thisani. Snackers, you look fantastic to start the week. If you haven't yet, click to follow us on Apple or Spotify.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Nick and I, we'll see you tomorrow. Can't wait. And before we go, congratulations to Stefan Rush, who are getting married. at an international destination wedding. Jack, this is the nuclear nuptials. Do you, Luke, take this Morgan Bates? Yes, they do. Yes, they got hitched in Rapid City, South Dakota. And Jerry Benzziaga is launching a DJ wedding business. He should probably connect with Staff Rush, Luke, and Morgan. Congrats to Nate Holstein, who just got a new job as a senior
Starting point is 00:14:40 PM in Greenwich, Connecticut. And David Levine just got the tax internship over UM. Congrats to Pearl, who just got a new job across the pond in London. And Jack, Izzy Benasso, got a new job. Colorado. Congratulations to Mercasee Wimberley, who got a new job in Orlando. Yes, she's at Dell, not Disney. And happy birthday to Ben Harrington, the NBA, turn in 31, down in Florida. Happy birthday to Dia, in Salem, India. And Cammy Walker got a 30th down in Austin, Texas. Happy 10th birthday to Srivats Ramon in Fremont, California. And Jesse Bud and Smash her, happy birthday down the street in San Francisco. Happy birthday to Uthman Mutha Ali in Harlem, New York City.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Not too shabby. And to anyone else celebrating today, make it a T-boy. Celebrate the wins. This is Jack. I own stock of Volkswax. And? And I own Volkswagen. He owns a Volkswagen.
