Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Nick. This is Jack. And this is Snacks Daily. It is Wednesday, almost Thursday, February 2nd. Groundhog Day is today? It's today. Did Puxitani Phil see a shadow Nick? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:00:12 Is he six more weeks a winter? Early spring, more winter, more spring. What are we going to get? Actually, Phil looked at his stock portfolio, decided to crawl back into his home. Yeah, Phil, the Groundhog. He bought Bitcoin at $70,000. Oh, he. Today's pod is the best one yet.
Starting point is 00:00:25 It's a TBOI. Jack, what's our first story? Tom Brady officially retired from football. But he's already launched. Goat Inc. Yeah, Goat Inc. The QB has built out a playbook for celebrpreneurship. For our second story, if you're not playing Whartle for five minutes every morning, you are W-E-I-R-D. I like what you did that. Whirdle. They grew to 3 million users in three months because they pulled to George Costanza. For our third and final story, the hottest stock on Wall Street right now,
Starting point is 00:00:52 it's ExxonMobil. Exxon stock, it is growing because Exxon stock is not a growth stock. True. And there's a lot of fathers-in-law. Very present. out of their X-O-M investment right now. This is an X-O-M-er, boomer. Jack, what a wonderful mix for today. I love this mix. But before we hit that wonderful mix, you got whole milk. 2% was my favorite as a kid.
Starting point is 00:01:13 You got skim milk, too. Some people do 1% but hey, you also got soy milk. You got almond milk. Now you got oat milk. There's also hemp milk, quino milk, macadamia milk. Jack, I've got stems. Could you milk me?
Starting point is 00:01:25 So here's the question. What's going to be the next milk? Yeah. Snackers, what will you be pouring in your Chea pudding tomorrow morning. It turns out the next big milk, not from a mammal, it's potato milk. Potato milk. The humble potato, it's getting a millennial makeover.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Just stick a spud in your cappuccino stack. Jack, if you froth the potato milk too long, it just becomes a potato stew. Forbes magazine is calling it right now. Potato milk is going to be the alt milk of 2022. Okay, Snackers, you can add this up for us. Potato milk, it's low in sugar, it's low in fat, and there's no lactose. This thing's a miracle milk and a root vegetable at the same time. jumped in snack style and we noticed that experts describe potato milk's flavor as neutral.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Is that in relation to like dairy milk? Not sure. Neutral. Feels like an insult, but also it could be a humble brag. How do you even milk a potato? Jack, I think you mash the potato and then you just keep mashing the potato. Until it's full on liquid. Yeah, you want to keep squeezing that potato until it tastes like money.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Oh, the VCs are on it, Nick. The VCs are on. Snackers, if you can't find potato milk yet, don't worry. Just French press a potato. Potato milk. It's the liquid tater top. Let's dunk our three stories into a glass of potato milk. You're tuned in to snacks daily.
Starting point is 00:02:37 We spoke to the lawyers and we got to get something legal out the way. It snacks about to hear rain food. It's air candy. They don't reflect the views of the Robberhood family. It's all informational just so. We're not recommending any securities. It's not a research report or investment advice. Not an offer or sale of a security.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Snacks is digestible. Business news for you. Roberthood Financial LLC, member Fenra slash SIPC. For our first story, Snacker, Tom Brady is done after seven Super Bowl rings. Tom Brady has retired. But this celebrpreneur could make way more money owning companies than he ever did playing football. Tom Brady, by the way, people from California, Michigan, New England, Tampa Bay, even Brazil, they're claiming him as like their native son.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Number 10 jersey, number 12 jersey, they're all wearing them. Also, that's like the whole country, those states, you just just. Jack, by the way, can you whip out the QB LinkedIn over there on Tom Brady? All right. He's drafted in the sixth round. He won nine Super Bowls. Sorry, seven Super Bowls. I forgot about Eli Man.
Starting point is 00:03:39 It was a rounding area. You always got to remember that one. He's also got three league MVPs and one deflated football. Everyone's afraid of inflation. Tom Brady only cares about deflation. Tom just announced in a long thank you message on Instagram to the Tampa Bay community that he's done playing football. Didn't mention Boston, but hey, that's not our problem right now.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Yeah, 20 years with the Patriots, two years with the Buccaneers. Tom is now retired from the NFL at the age of 44. Now, Snackers, Tom is done with football. But Tom Brady is just beginning life as a businessman. We're talking QB MBA over there. Co-CEO, Jazele Bunchen, his wife. Yeah, serious corporate structure. As Tom put it, it is time for me to focus my energy and time on other things that require my attention.
Starting point is 00:04:24 This celebrpreneur has spun his fame already in two, so many businesses that he gets to leave. That's what's interesting about Tom's situation. His celebrpreneur playbook is all about the diversity of the startups he's founded or invested in. All right. Let's kick it off with TB12. Tom's freakishly durable body is why he launched TB12, a nutrition and health and wellness company.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Well, that's in the food and beverage industry. Last year, Tom added the laserized thing to his Twitter profile and invested in FTX, the crypto company we talked about yesterday. A blockchain company. He also launched this year the Brady brand, which is an apparel company. for athletes by athletes. Which is in the fashion industry. And he can pass, literally.
Starting point is 00:05:04 No, I'm not kidding. There's two more here. He also raised $170 million for autograph, his NFT startup. Yeah, that was like a week ago. And this startup aims to help athletes and celebrities create and then sell NFTs to all their fans. So that the biggest Tom Brady fan can put a Tom Brady rookie card on display in the
Starting point is 00:05:21 Metaverse. Oh, wait. And there's more. Yeah. He also owns a media company called 199 productions that did Man in the Arena, the Tom Brady series that's on ESPN Plus right now. Jack, I know you hate saying the word media. So I appreciate you mentioning that final one.
Starting point is 00:05:35 It's a word with no meaning. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddy over at Tom Brady Inc? They played in the game. Now they want skin in the game. Yeah, Snackers, the athlete's celebrpreneur, they have blown up in the past few years. LeBron plays basketball, but his media startup, it's worth nearly a billion dollars. Tom Brady, he played football, buddy owns companies like he's a human head. hedge fund. A key reason, owning companies has way higher upside than getting paid a salary to play
Starting point is 00:06:03 sports stuff. Get this. Tom, he made $300 million over 22 years of getting paid to play football and get manhandled by Justin Tuck. But if any one of Tom's companies reaches unicorn status, then that $300 million he made in the NFL, it'll look as small as a golf cart. Okay, Jack, how about Kim Kardashian and Rihanna? They got similar stories. Their TV and music careers are not nearly as valuable as their potential stakes in the companies they found it. Tom's day job of quarterbacking got him famous. But now his upside is in entrepreneurship, founding four different companies. He played in the game.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Now he has skin in the game. For our second story, this one's wild. Wordle. Wordle was the most viral game of all the last year, and it just got acquired. To hack its growth, Wordle ignored every single growth hack in the tech industry. single one. First of all, if you haven't played Wordle yet, Snackers, like this is a PSA, pause the pod. Take five minutes. Jack and I will wait for you. We'll be right here. Google Wordle. That's it. WRO, yeah, Wirtle. You know what to stuff. And it's the first hit. But there's a bunch of copycats.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Don't click the copycats. Whartle is, it's the kind of game when you're going to want to play with like a chai latte in your right hand. But it's also the best gift ever because it was literally created as a gift by an engineer named Josh Wardle in Brooklyn for his girlfriend. Yeah, a guy named Wardle created a game named Whartle. Yeah, and he started playing with family and friends and the game, it kind of started catching on. On November 1st, 90 people were playing Whartle. Yes. January 1st, 300,000 people were playing.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Okay, I'm following. Today, 3 million people play for five minutes every morning. And if they're like me, they've only won it one time, even though it's like not known to be a hard game. It's like an interesting learning curve. It's a creative learning curve. Snackers, here's how this goes down. The purpose of the game is you just have to guess a five-letter word. So you kick it off with like mouse.
Starting point is 00:07:57 You just randomly guess the word mouse. That's a go. And it will tell you if any of those five letters are in the correct word. And also, if those correct letters are in the right position in the word. Pro tip, I heard by the way, Jack, we should try this. Start with the word adieu. The French word? Yeah, because he got like a bunch of vowels in there.
Starting point is 00:08:13 So like the vowels are kind of like, it's a good way to start. I don't know how to spell adieu. As we said, there's an interesting learning curve to this game. But Snackers, here is the catch. You only get six tries to guess that five-letter word. And you can only play the game once a day. Nick and I played yesterday. We did.
Starting point is 00:08:30 And yesterday's word was those. It was those. This isn't a spoiler, by the way, because it already happened. It's actually the first time I ever got it. I got it in four tries. Then Nick texts me that he got it in three. You didn't have to say that. You didn't have to say that on the pot.
Starting point is 00:08:43 SAT training courses are finally paying off. Now, Snackers, Wordle, it is totally free. It literally makes zero revenue for the creator. And yet, Whirdle just sold for a few million dollars to the New York Times. That's the news. Yeah, that guy, Wardle, he just made a wordle or two. Yeah, New York Times. Also, we told you last month, they're not just a newspaper.
Starting point is 00:09:02 The New York Times just hit one million game players who pay monthly to play games with the New York Times. Oh, Word games is the New York Times' thing. My mom, she's like five beta Kappa in the New York Times spelling bee games. I can see that. I can see that, Genoa. But it's not just crossword. There's the spelling bee. There's tiles.
Starting point is 00:09:19 There's mini puzzles. There's also the games and cooking apps. Those are what fund New York Times Journalists. Yeah, those games are basically like the New York Times profit puppy. Now, the New York Times said Wordle will initially their words remain free. But ultimately, they may make you pay for it like they do their other games. People will get A-N-G-E-R. So when it comes to Mr. Wardle's Wordle, two different paths it could go down.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Word could become the next newspaper word game icon, like the New York Times Sunday crossword. Yeah, legendary, timeless, play it forever. Or Wordle could become HQ Trivia. Yeah, huge moment and then fizzles out into nothing. HQ trivia, remember, was gone in quibby seconds. But here's what Jack and I find fascinating about Wordle, this quote from the creator. I deliberately did what you're not meant to do if growth is your goal. Deliberately not growth.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddy over at Wordle? Wurdle pulled a George Costanza. He did the opposite of every. everything you were supposed to do. Snackers, the key to Wordle success seems to be that Wordle doesn't want you to play Wordle. Wordle did the opposite of every other thing that tried to grow. Yeah, other games, they let you play as much as you want and the goal is to get you addicted.
Starting point is 00:10:34 But Wordle limits you to just one game a day. If you try to refresh the window, they don't let you play a second game until tomorrow. Wordle leaves you wanting more. Other games, they're going to send you push notifications if you haven't played in a while. Wordle is never going to send you a push notification. In a world of constant pinging, Wordle is not annoying. Finally, other games try to grow to new users with share buttons,
Starting point is 00:10:56 like share on Facebook. Share it. With pre-populated messages and a link to join. Tweet it. When you finally tweet it, it looks like someone hacked your Twitter account. The Wordle's sharing feature, it's minimal. It shows just like how your last game played out.
Starting point is 00:11:08 That's it. There's no link to join Whartle. There's just a number of those small colored tiles to show how you did last game. The Wordle posts, they are visually clean and they are mysteriously empty. So how did Whartle hack this incredible growth with no marketing budget whatsoever? By not doing every tech growth hack that exists out there. Sometimes you have to ignore every instinct in your body and just walk up to a beautiful woman and say, my name's George. I'm bald. I'm unemployed and I live with my parents.
Starting point is 00:11:38 For our third and final story, this was a shocker. Exxon Mobile, the oil stock is the hottest thing on Wall Street right now. Exxon is literally the opposite of a growth stock, which is why it's growing right now. Okay, biggest news in Houston since like AstroTurf. Exxon Mobile is moving into Houston, Texas. Yeah, Exxon Mobil is moving out of its home city, Irving, to the oil capital of the world, big city, Houston, Texas. Why? Because this is the new Exxon. That's why.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Exxon just unveiled their new corporate structure, which has three divisions. Okay, for example, they're doing upstream. Pulling oil and gas out of the art. And they're doing product solutions. Refining that oil. into gasoline for gas stations. And they're doing low carbon. Oh, that's the solar and wind projects that Exxon begrudgingly has to invest in. And all this is because the future is less about oil fields, more about innovation. So Exxon wants to be in a major city. But Snackers, here's the bigger news.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Exxon Mobile just had its best year for profits since 2014. Let's start with Exxon. $23 billion. That was Exxon's profit last year, including $9 billion in just the last quarter. 23 billion last year. That is about as fourth as much as Apple. But it's nearly as much as Amazon. It's pretty darn profitable. Okay. So, Jack, how about the X off? Exxon paid off $20 billion of debt last year. That's a lot of IOUs that have been eliminated. And why were they able to pay off so much money suddenly last year? Because the price of oil is nearly double what it was one year ago. Ifso facto, Exxon Mobil has got nearly double the cash flowing in. And by the way, last weekend, we saw $5.15
Starting point is 00:13:18 gasoline in Marin. Can you believe that? Exxon loves that. They want you driving a lot in Northern California. And they want you paying at the pump a lot. Add all that up, Snackers, and it has pushed ExxonMobil stock price to its highest level since before the pandemic. The rest of the stock market,
Starting point is 00:13:35 the S&P 500, we're talking. It's down 6% this year. Exxon Mobil, it's up 26% this year. So, Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at ExxonMobil. Exxon is the opposite of a growth stock. And that's just what investors want. Yeah, gross stocks. They're fine, losing money because, you know, they're focused on the big future potential. If you're working on tomorrow's next big thing, you shouldn't worry about profits today. But ExxonMobil is like the opposite of a tech growth stock. They're a classic value stock.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Oil is not a growth industry. Oil is believed to be a long-term decline, actually. Literally the opposite. Oh, plus ExxonMobil, they're acting. like the opposite of a growth stock too. Exxon is making profits, a ton of profits, and giving those profits not back to the company, but directly to investors. In fact, analysts expect ExxonMobil to raise their dividend and then send a bigger dividend check out to shareholders this year.
Starting point is 00:14:29 With rising interest rates and inflation, Exxon is exactly the kind of boring value stock. It looks from the big money managers that put in those billion-dollar buy orders. Exxon Mobile stock is growing because it's not a growth stock. It's the opposite of a gross stock. which is why Wall Street wants in and is growing the stock. Anti-growth mode is the new growth mode. Jack, can you whip up the Wednesday takeaways for us over there?
Starting point is 00:14:54 Tom Brady has done playing football, which means more time for his family and his four-plus company. Yeah, he's played in the game. Now he has skin in the game. Wordle has sold to the New York Times for reported low, single-digit million dollars. Yeah. Sometimes you've got to pull a Costanza. Do the opposite of every instinct you have.
Starting point is 00:15:11 And it can work out. Totally worked out. For our third and final story, ExxonMobil isn't a growth stock, but it's stocks growing. It's a value stock, which is just what Wall Street wants right now. Now, time for our snack fact of the day. This one sent in by Bacha Cooperstein over in lovely New York City. The most rare eye color, by far, is green eyes, which is amazing because Alex has green eyes. And she's one of a kind, I think we would say, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Only 2% of the world's population have green eyes. And Baccia's an optometrist, an eye doctor. So he would know. Also, on the other hand, you know, 2% of the world has red hair. That's it. Which Molly has. Yeah. So if you have green eyes and red hair, you are literally the most unique person listening
Starting point is 00:15:52 to this podcast right now. You were like the wordal word of the day. I think it's someone named Mollicks. That works out really well. Snackers, if you want to help grow the pod, this is the best way you can do it. Tune to the person to your right and just say, hey, H-Y-H-Y-S-D. It means have you had your snacks daily? Pod, you got to try out.
