Starting point is 00:01:00 And this is The Big Picture, a conversation show about 2001, a movie drafting odyssey. CR, Chris Ryan, is here. And we are drafting again this week. We are drafting movies from 2001. We're going to the past. As opposed to what else in 2001?
Starting point is 00:01:18 I don't know. What should we have drafted? TV shows? Our favorite Arizona Diamondbacks? Wow. Hyun Young Kim? Yeah. He was on the board there, right? Luis Gonzalez. Arizona Diamondbacks. Wow. Hyun Young Kim. Yeah. He was on the board there, right?
Starting point is 00:01:27 Luis Gonzalez. Randy Johnson, of course. Kurt Schilling. I can keep going. Anybody else? Any other Diamondbacks spring to mind? Was Matt Williams on that team? Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:35 I believe he was. Look at that. Digging in our bag. Amanda Dobbins, you're also here. You were not watching baseball games in 2001. No, I wasn't. Before we go back, though, I wanted to go to the future. Because we've gotten some distressing news in the world of movies.
Starting point is 00:01:50 The Disney Corporation, the Walt Disney Corporation, they've made some changes to their release schedule in the coming, not two years, four years, six years, but eight plus years. And there's been some news that the fifth Avatar film, there have only been two released, mind you. I know. But the fifth Avatar film is going to be released in December of 2031, a scant few months before my 50th birthday. And I was shook to my core reading today's news.
Starting point is 00:02:23 There were a number of other announcements. Amanda, at first blush, how are you feeling about this big news in the movie world? Not good. Because I flashed to, I'll be 47,
Starting point is 00:02:35 which is horrifying to contemplate on a number of levels. Then I just Googled Bob Iger. I'm literally almost 47. I mean, I'm 45. You're doing great.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Yeah, I know I am. You know? But like, you're the leader. Also, fucking guys, when they get to that 47, that's when all the wisdom piles up, you know? Really? Yeah, I think so. The wisdom. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:57 The wisdom of what? Look at Bill. He's never been better. That's true. You and my husband were having a conversation last night about people over 70 who are fun to talk to. Yeah. And we could, you listed two people, right? It was, I was in the other room trying to feed my son.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Sleepy Joe. No, we were talking about how. Joe Manchin, is he 70? With all due respect to my mother, like my mom will say, did you hear about the I-95 collapse? And I will say, yes. Yeah the i-95 collapse and i will say yes yeah i've read about it extensively and then she will say here's what happened and does not care that i know the information because she's to her she's like it's been on the docket all day that i was going to call you and talk to you about the i-95 collapse and you already knowing about it is not
Starting point is 00:03:42 going to deter me right interesting yeah so it's funny that you mentioned that because my father turned 70 years old this year and I was chatting with him on Sunday, he and his wife, and we were talking about the show Barry and he, for whatever reason, he and his wife just got super into Barry in this last season. They watched the whole show in like a month's time. Did you consider it was because you do a podcast with the creator of Barry and your dad is trying to tell you that he loves you? That is exactly what was happening. That's beautiful. It was very nice. But we were talking about Barry and I was like, I'm not sure Barry is really my dad's speed for a show, but he really enjoyed it. And then we were talking about
Starting point is 00:04:16 one of the last episodes where there was a confusing situation with the character of Sally. And I started to explain it in my pompous way where I'm like, well, let me just tell you what's really going on here. And he was like, I get it. It was like a psychological breakdown. I get it. And I was like, well, sharp as an attack. My dad.
Starting point is 00:04:32 All right. So he's 70 proving us wrong in some cases. Okay. In some cases. Well, the distinction was not that these people don't have it because there were also several members of my extended family who are listed. I'm not going to put them on blast if that's okay. Sure. But it was the conversational style, right? And so then there was a list of people who are good at conversation and it was Francis
Starting point is 00:04:57 Ford Coppola and Al Pacino. Right. Right. Your husband has extensive experience speaking with those people, which we do not. Right. But that was it. speaking with those people. Yes. Which we do not. Right. But that was it. That was the only two. But just to bring this full circle, James Cameron, the auteur genius behind the Avatar films and franchise, turns 69 years old in about two months. Which means he will be 77 years old when Avatar 5 comes out. Now, it's not impossible to make great films at 77 years old.
Starting point is 00:05:26 We see what Ridley Scott is doing. We see what Martin Scorsese is doing these days. But these seem like very difficult films to make. Quite physically taxing. They require a lot of imagineering. Sure. Well, I think that probably what we're talking about is a lot of block shooting where they knock out a couple of these sequels at once.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Old Lord of the Rings style, which may come up during this podcast and i also think that like who can say where we're going to be in 2031 you may be watching this in a minority report milk bath you know just like it'll be a milk bath i'm not sure if i'll be a precog um you're you're feeling concerned about this bob eiger will be 80 And I know he says right now that he will no longer be the CEO of Disney. Yeah, but who really can say? James Cameron, I believe in his ability and his technologies to do what he wants to do on his timeline. To keep himself alive. I mean, this is the other thing.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Like, 2031 is what's on the date now. And then you get Jim in the water tank and then it's just suddenly we're all, you know, we're all 80. Yeah, we could be pushing 60, 70. Who knows? But I would like to, this was released as part of like
Starting point is 00:06:33 a larger Disney schedule thing. You know, Untitled Alien Event Movie is the updated title of Untitled Disney dated on 8-16-24, which is two weeks after my 40th birthday. So? I just...
Starting point is 00:06:48 Maybe we can get them to organize a private screen on your birthday. Chess Burster comes right out of the cave. When do we... When do we grow up? When do we all grow up? What do you want to do? Do you want to open up like a tchotchke shop?
Starting point is 00:07:05 Like this is, we're living the dream right here. I actually think that you should do, you personally on your social media, whatever platform you choose. I know Truth Social has been going well for you lately. Consider like the Nancy Meyers, like eight year report where you sketch out eight years worth of Nancy Meyers.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Do you actually know the Nancy Meyers filmmaking project that's going on right now? No. This is incredible stuff. So her daughter, Annie, I believe it's Annie, Hallie's the filmmaker and Annie is remodeling a home. Okay. And documenting it all. Truly two sides of a mother right there.
Starting point is 00:07:41 But she's documenting it all on Instagram. The Instagram handle is this oak house and it's become very clear that she and nancy are remodeling the home together and basically annie is just documenting her mother's i mean she's you know redoing the house so you get a lot of house content but also she's always at nancy's house nancy's always like going over like paint swatches they went on a trip to london and paris they arrived right after we left this isn't a film right but but there is a lot of film documentation of these people just making a house and they're so we've just boiled it down so and since they wouldn't fund her movie it's just happening on
Starting point is 00:08:22 instagram it's riveting content you also learn what kind of designer clothes Nancy Meyers is into right now. I just, I can't tell you enough about it. See, here's what that sounds like to me. This is my producer mind going. That sounds like the skeleton of the Nancy Meyers documentary is in present day, we follow her Verite style through the remodeling of a home with her daughter, which is a part of her legacy. Her homes are a part of her legacy and her films, of course, are a part of her legacy. Her homes are a part of her legacy and her films, of course, are a part of her legacy. And then we go back and then the core,
Starting point is 00:08:50 the muscles, the flesh of the film is her talking about her work while we watch her do her other work. Do you want to direct this film? I would love to. I'm available for this.
Starting point is 00:09:02 You have untitled alien event film next year. The name of the film is What Nancy Wants okay beautiful yes great will you come on
Starting point is 00:09:11 as an associate producer slash catering guy yeah for sure I'll cater you know what I love it when you talk about home furnishings you know
Starting point is 00:09:19 and clothes I don't understand why you guys are like like our parents fought World War II to get us to the place to get us to the place where we could be talking
Starting point is 00:09:32 about Captain America Brave New World dated 523 moving to 726. Is that the subtitle on the Captain America movie? Yes. Brave New World? Yeah. Is that an Alges Huxley like overt reference? Yeah, I think so. Definitely. Are you mocking me? Yeah, I think so. Definitely. Are you mocking me?
Starting point is 00:09:47 Yes. I don't know. I don't even know anymore. Do you think that the writers of the film have read the book Brave New World? Isn't Brave New World kind of like just a say up? We're like, you know.
Starting point is 00:09:57 I believe it's coined. Pete Alonzo's hurt so it's a Brave New World at first base for the Mets. Like it's not like I'll just put that in. I guess but I'm pretty sure it's coined from that book.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Yeah. Which is... But it's like... Wait, are you caping up for the title of the new Captain America movie? Just in an effort to have banter on a pod? Jesus. How far will you go? I know.
Starting point is 00:10:18 You're full Feige. You've been talking about Secret Invasion for weeks. No, but I think actually because the way I've been approaching the idol has like completely changed my relationship to content where I'm like nothing matters as long as it's just it's got that friction. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:29 As long as there's a 23-year-old actress having an orgasm on screen, you're all set, right? Right. Any other notable releases here on this schedule?
Starting point is 00:10:38 I see the live-action Moana film dated for 6-27-25 just in time for my daughter to go to the movies they put an extra star wars movie in here right so that is notable there are there are three star wars films that are dated here including two in one year which is what year 2026 2027 uh it's there is a untitled star wars movie it was previously for basically christmas of 25 and now it's May of 26. And then there's a secret star movie,
Starting point is 00:11:07 Star Wars movie, that comes out in May of 27. Do you believe those films will happen? So right now, the three that are kind of like being talked about the most are the Daisy Ridley movie that Damon Lindelof had written the script for,
Starting point is 00:11:21 and then Stephen Knight took over. There is a James Mangold kind of biblical epic Jedi movie and a Filoni movie. How do you feel about that, Amanda? I like Star Wars. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Are you excited for Daisy Ridley to be back in the cut? I mean, she didn't really get to do... I hated the resolution of that trilogy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:41 I thought that was a real cop-out. What is the... Is this like a prequel a real cop-out. What is the... Is this like a prequel? I don't know. Or is she... She's defeated Palpatine again.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Details are scant on this one. Yeah. Rooting for her, sure. Whatever. I think she's also framed as the founder of True Social. So it should be...
Starting point is 00:11:58 It should be an interesting story. Are you excited for Deadpool 3? Well, I've really... I've had a journey with Ryan Reynolds since I loudly proclaimed my enjoyment of the Deadpool films. Pretty much everything he's done since I started doing that has made me feel bad about doing that.
Starting point is 00:12:15 You know, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is one of the few good things to actually come out of these movies in the last 20 years. He was legitimately great as Wolverine, and so I'm not mad at him going back into that world. He also had the greatest send-off of any comic book character on screen he did they kind of screwed that up yeah dick jokes that's not ideal logan i love logan quality film the thing that is most concerning to me actually on this list is not the avatar films because i think over time you just you can't we don't bet against jim right we've talked about it
Starting point is 00:12:40 we don't bet against j. Jim comes through. The Avengers Secret Wars film being dated four full years from now actually has me quite shook. That's a long time. And things are not going well in that corner of storytelling here in the American cinema experience. And I mean, maybe it'll be great. Maybe the ship will be righted. What's going to happen in the American cinema experience. And I mean, I don't know. Maybe it'll be great. Maybe the ship will be righted. What's going to happen in The Secret Wars? Well, Chris actually just reread it
Starting point is 00:13:12 as I heard on The Watch podcast. So maybe you could just recap it from the very first page all the way through. I wouldn't want to spoil it for Amanda. There's an intergalactic battle. Yeah. Okay. But it's secret.
Starting point is 00:13:24 The timelines collapse. How do they keep it a secret? They go to a place called Battleworld, right? Yeah. It all takes place inside of Joe Biden's garage. But you can see through it because the garage door is paper thick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:35 And the winner of Secret Wars gets his Corvette. Should be a heck of a movie. I think that's probably why they pushed it a year. They needed to just keep working on the garage, keep working on that vet. Should we go to 2001? Sure. Okay. 2001, I'm going to start.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Here's who I was. I was a sophomore in college. And in the span of roughly eight months, I gained about 45 pounds. What? It's just a fact. I don't know how that happened. I thought it was like calzones. I mean, I know how it happened, but I don't know how it happened. You know, like the body is a mystery to me. And yet there was expanding rapidly at an incredible rate. Well, I mean, were you an athletic guy before this? I was an athlete in high school.
Starting point is 00:14:21 And then I was like, what I'm going to do here is sit down and watch Boogie Nights and eat carbohydrates. That's what happened. That happened to me a little bit in high school when I broke my hand. The body was trained to be one thing. Because you couldn't crank it? No, but I couldn't pitch frame anymore. You know what I mean? I see. I see. I couldn't. I couldn't. Is that a euphemism?
Starting point is 00:14:42 Honey, what are you doing? Pitch framing! Don't worry about it! Don't I have any privacy anymore? Just because I'm married doesn't mean you can't knock! Just kidding. No, when you're a highly trained athlete, the body
Starting point is 00:15:01 is a temple. It's a system. And if you're pouring in cheese takes and calzones into it yeah and then all of a sudden you stop the machine right god the machine breaks that is what happened i didn't break it just it it started expanding um in ways i didn't know were possible yeah uh and so you know an interesting year i would say maybe not my most successful year as a human being okay i was not outside very often okay uh I was writing quite a bit this is when I wrote my first movie review in this year actually for the school newspaper I I want to say it was David Cronenberg's Spider but then I looked back and that said 2002 so now I don't remember what the film must have been but
Starting point is 00:15:38 maybe we'll discover uh it might be on the list are those archives digitized can people go back I don't believe so the original letterboxd I don't believe so. Thank fucking God. Because they were all bad. I can't read things I wrote two years ago, let alone 25 years ago. But interesting year. I was not thrilled to be attending college in upstate New York. And upon reflection, I would have much preferred to go to the American South or the West Coast. But that's why I live here now.
Starting point is 00:16:01 You and the American South. How would I have done? At college. Tell me. I don't have done? At college. Tell me, tell me. I don't know whether. What do you mean? You could hang. It wasn't where you would have found your people.
Starting point is 00:16:11 What does that mean? Was that where I found my people either? I left the American South to go. I was still in the American South in 2001, unfortunately. I think I've done a poor job of characterizing myself through whatever persona this is on this podcast. I'm like a pretty regular drink beer and watch sports kind of person. And I think I would have done just fine in Virginia.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Why are you looking at me? Because you're casting aspersions on my ability to just attend Vanderbilt. Well, I don't think that you don't appreciate college football enough. No, you could not have gone to Vanderbilt. It could have transformed me. It would have indoctrinated me. I was just looking for a home. These moments in college are very sliding doors-ish.
Starting point is 00:16:48 I could have been a Phish fan. Could you? I could have. I mean, it could have happened. You're literally wearing a military gun sweatshirt right now. So I'm not totally sure that that would have taken. But who knows? 2001, Amanda.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Who were you? I was just a huge nerd. I was studying for the, I was taking the SATs. I was taking AP French, one of the most useless courses I've ever taken in my entire life. Disagree. Your pronunciation on this show has always been immaculate. Thank you. But it's like, why, why?
Starting point is 00:17:18 It was French literature, you know? Like, who cares if I can like read some like Rambo or whatever? Like, no, it's not useful. It's not useful. Tell it to Bob Dylan. He transformed Rambo into some of the greatest pop music of the 20th century. Which is a course that I took in college. You know what?
Starting point is 00:17:35 Can we not? We all moved on. He's still around. He's alive. I know. And the sorry on the bed sheet was actually very funny. I laughed. Anyway. And I sorry on the bed sheet was actually very funny. I laughed. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:45 And I was running cross country. And I was just, you know, trying to get into college. It was a sad existence. It's high school. Do you not look back at high school with like reference and romance? Oh, man. But I just studied all the time. I was a nerd.
Starting point is 00:18:01 That's the difference. We were fucking kings. Yeah. She was a loser. Yeah. But then I went to college and I like ascended to a higher plane. It's a nerd. That's the difference. We were fucking kings. Yeah. She was a loser. Congratulations. Yeah. Then I went to college and I ascended to a higher plane. It's great. So it's really fun.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Do you think you binge drink and just get miserable in the winter? I wasn't miserable. Well, yeah. Maybe in the winter. But the rest of the time was really fun. Do you guys want me to tell you about Tube Stock again? Did you do that on a pod before? You did, right?
Starting point is 00:18:22 You did. No, it wasn't on a podcast. Where was it? Oh, it was in Europe. Yeah, that was just in Europe? You did, right? You did. No, it wasn't on a podcast. Where was it? Oh, it was in Europe. Yeah, that was just in Europe. It's all one pod. And you were really, really upset. Yeah, that was weird.
Starting point is 00:18:32 That's for the Patreon. Yeah, I don't know. I was a teenager. I could drive. Could I drive? I could drive. And where did you drive? Primarily to school.
Starting point is 00:18:41 And then to parking lots? These are really cool stories about your youth. Listen, high school was not cool for me. I drove to school and I ran cross lots. These are really cool stories about your youth. Listen, high school was not cool for me. I drove to school and I ran cross country. Like on a Friday night, what would you do? I was a state champion. Okay, congratulations. Not individually.
Starting point is 00:18:54 I was, well. Were you DeAndre Jordan? Were you like the 12th guy? You were on a team of thousands. I actually was 12 in the state. Okay. Because you ran, the way cross country works. I don't know if you, you didn't run cross country, I assume. I did not.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Okay, great. Is that, you know, you enter, I don't know, six people? Okay. And everyone, you know, in the race, each team and six people. And then it's like a cumulative like point total of where you finish. So it's like live golf kind of. in so many ways sure i really don't know i know where some of the money for my school came from but we we could do some accounting anyway i ran in state and i finished 12th overall but our team was really good so like one two three it was also for my team anyway great we and we won
Starting point is 00:19:44 state like i don't know how long you want to go on amanda's high school but i am pretty interested like what's a garden variety friday night for you in high school well so usually cross-country nights oh well okay cross-country you would have like the pasta party the night before you know where you like carve up before your saturday morning. But the rest of the time, I spent a lot of time in parking lots. Like, what do you want? I can relate to that. Yeah, like parking lots in, you know, the suburban Atlanta area. Okay.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Open fields where there were no police officers is what usually what we were doing. Yeah, we didn't, there weren't that really open fields available to us in Atlanta, but. We would just like go in the, whatever the soccer field was behind an abandoned middle school and just drink Zima. Did you drink a lot of Zima? No, we did St. Ives Pure Premium. Oh, I see. You and Raekwon sitting together drinking St. Ives. I didn't drink that much until I got to college, though.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Interesting. You don't really drink that much now, actually. I mean, I drink often. Right, but not at great volume. What's that about? It's a little bit of my It's like a little bit of my British side and a little bit of my Jewish side. You know what I mean? I just feel like I have
Starting point is 00:20:49 my dad's frequency, but my mom's kind of... I don't know. That's always my guess. I love that. 2001, who were you? Let's see. I just moved to New York City from Boston. I was going to work at spin.com as something.
Starting point is 00:21:09 You know, we were going to do a lot of big things there. And then the dot-com bubble crash happened. And some other stuff happened in 01 that changed the economy. And I started working at Mondo Kim's that year. Oh, that was when you started? In November. So, yeah, I thought I was going to be a big city journalist, Carrie Bradshaw style.
Starting point is 00:21:28 And I wound up just going back to retail. But it worked out great for me. I got to meet a lot of people and have a lot of experiences in the record store that I worked at. Do you think if you had focused primarily on writing about your sex life instead of Del the Funky Homo Sapien,
Starting point is 00:21:44 you would have been more successful. It would have been a pretty minimal text. Well, that's part of the joy. Swinging and missing makes for a great column too, you know? But yeah, it was a very strange time to be a new New Yorker. When you think of the movies this year, was this a good movie year? Was this a fun time for movies? Were you going to the movies a lot in high school?
Starting point is 00:22:07 Not a ton, but probably once or twice a month. I have very vivid memories of seeing certain movies on this list, like five to 25 times. That was sort of like the high school vibe I was in. And then some that just went straight over my head because, like I said was like just taking AP French why what about for you so at this time I was thinking a lot more about music because that was sort of why I'd moved to New York City was to be a music critic that being said there is a movie from this year that I went and saw once I think by myself and then the next day I grabbed like two of my friends and was like, we have to go back and see this movie immediately.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And I feel like this movie from this year actually like started, was very formative of the way I think about like movies going forward. And that movie was Crocodile Dunkey in Los Angeles. Cause I was like, yeah, like it was aspirational to move to the West coast. Um, yeah, I Because it's like, yeah, it was aspirational to move to the West Coast. Yeah, I think it's a little bit more challenging
Starting point is 00:23:08 to go to the movies when you're in college because every night is an excuse to get hammered. I did try to go as much as I could, but probably not as frequently as I did in high school.
Starting point is 00:23:17 But then when I started reviewing movies more regularly for the newspaper, I was on the track of covering stuff more aggressively. This is a pretty unusual year. I was on the track of covering stuff more aggressively. This is a pretty unusual
Starting point is 00:23:26 year. I still can't really decide if it's really top heavy or actually really varied and deep because sometimes when I look at it, I think, well, five of the greatest films ever made came out this year. But then I look and the bench is actually deeper than I remember. And it's a kind of a sliding scale of taste, but there are films that I have a fondness for that may not even be considered great, but that I really enjoy. We were joking about this yesterday in the office about whether or not the draft strategy for this one should just be like, what do I actually watch from this year? And people might not like that, the truth of that. You know what I mean? They may be like, how the fuck are you talking about Joyride?
Starting point is 00:24:04 Yeah. But like, if I'm being honest, like there, how the fuck are you talking about Joyride? Yeah. You know, but like, if I'm being honest, like, there are obviously, like, there are some classics
Starting point is 00:24:09 from this year, but then there's a bunch where I'm like, when it's just me and, you know, my own private Idaho, I'm watching Spy Game.
Starting point is 00:24:16 You know what I'm saying? Is that like a pitch framing style euphemism? No, I'm just saying when it's just like, when it's down to like, it's like my choice of what to watch from this year,
Starting point is 00:24:25 they're not the classics, but they're classics to me. Interesting. Have you thought about your strategy? Chris and I had a chance to discuss this, but I haven't spoken with you about this year. Yeah, that's sort of cheating, but that's fine. Well, we didn't actually. We were like, isn't Joyride good? I can't believe that you're deciding with him now.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Chris said, I'm going to get Amanda up in the razor's edge and drop her right on her neck in the middle of this pod. Will you join me in the efforts? We had a really nice
Starting point is 00:24:52 travel experience. We really did. Yeah. We've really gotten a chance to talk about that on a podcast. It was great. Would you like to recount it
Starting point is 00:24:58 before you begin drafting? No, it's okay. We can do it as we go along. You think anybody cares? Anybody cares about our travel experience? Well, we talked about the wonderful live show the three of us had the chance to do.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Was there more that you wanted to get into? I just, I don't know. We all agreed on, we had nice interests. We went and did our individual activities. Then we met up. I thought it was nice. I thought it was very stimulating. I thought it was a good rhythm.
Starting point is 00:25:22 How many times were you interrupted in your hotel room by Amanda while it's pitch framingaltz pitch framing chris come on we're running late we have a reservation hold on um bobby 2001 you were five years old five years old yeah that's right wow had you seen a film moved i had seen yeah i'd seen a film. 2001 Spy Kids. We talked about this. Of course. That's right. Just moved to the greater Philadelphia area. So my connection with Chris was just forming, even though I didn't know
Starting point is 00:25:54 it yet at the time. Not a lot else going on, to be honest, as a five-year-old. I was chilling at home in the backyard. Or everything, but you just don't remember. You could have been... The world was at your feet. That's true. I was in kindergarten.
Starting point is 00:26:07 So, doing some paint by number, I guess. As I look at the box office from this year, I'd say I'm not inspired. I would say that whatever the top of the industry was,
Starting point is 00:26:19 was not dissimilar from the way it would look today. And maybe that's a good reminder that it's all part of a circle. You know, that nothing ever really changes. Yeah, write that down on a post-it and put it on your own mirror, buddy.
Starting point is 00:26:32 That just wouldn't be very good for content. I think you and I both know that if I feel like even keeled... Do you write things on post-its? Reminders to yourself? Do you have mantras? Do I have what? Like a mantra, you know? Oh, do you have mantras do i have what like a mantra you know
Starting point is 00:26:45 oh do i have mantras uh not really i'm not a terribly spiritual person as you know like you don't go up to the mirror in the morning and say you were beautiful you were loved no i'm i know what you do post coitally when you amidst turkey sandwich and you scream, I am the best. No, I'm not a pump-up person. I'm not. I don't have to give myself. Maybe, do you think I should give myself daily affirmation? Would that be helpful for the show? I think that would be a fascinating experiment for all of us.
Starting point is 00:27:16 Bob says no. Yeah. Sean and I take the Max Scherzer approach where we just curse ourselves out constantly. Agreed. I feel more comfortable in that space. That being said, this is a nice reminder that it's kind of always bad and always good, right? Everything is,
Starting point is 00:27:29 there's always greatness and there's always mediocrity and there's always whackness. And this year, there were some interesting movies in the top 20 in the box office and there were some really dull sequels to movies I never cared about in the first place.
Starting point is 00:27:42 And that's just kind of the way of the world. Are you excited to draft from this year? I'm really excited to do this year. Yes, I am. You had to consider that for a moment. I did. I had to look back at my list and be like, what did I lay out here? Yeah, I got some favorites here.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Well, here are the categories we're going to draft with. Drama, comedy, action, horror, or thriller. Blockbuster and The Threshold will be $100 million here. Oscar nominee and wild card. Of course, six categories. We each get a pick in those categories. We need Bobby Wagner to help us decide what the draft order is. Bob?
Starting point is 00:28:17 Guys, the bad news is I don't have the Scrabble tiles in the Top Gun hat today. What happened? Where are you? I'm traveling. I'm on the ground in Delaware. I'm checking out some Corvettes. So we're back to the random spinning wheel.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Cookies are cleared. Confirmed. I cleared the cookies before we started. Thanks very much. Thank you and I'm sorry you have to now remember your passwords for every single set.
Starting point is 00:28:41 You should be doing that anyway. Drafting first is Chris Ryan. Damn it. Wow. Drafting on second is Amanda Dobbins. Okay. Well. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:28:59 You've had the turn a couple of times in a row now, I think. I had the turn on Robert De Niro. Did I have the turn before that as well? I feel like you did. I think you did. And that's when you think. I had the turn on Robert De Niro. Did I have the turn before that as well? I feel like you did. I think you did, and that's when you had a meltdown. Oh yeah, the Thanos, or the Avengers one, where you were on the turn, and I was like, I guess we could
Starting point is 00:29:13 change the order, because you're having it. Did I win that one? Probably, yeah. You know, I don't think we ever posted the vote for De Niro. It wasn't my decision. Well, I don't know. You seem very mad right now. No, I'm just saying it would be nice... Chris, let's take it down a notch, Chris.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Settle down. People want to know who wins these things. There's people out there who keep stats. That is true. That is a historical record. It's good to know. Is this just like Reddit CR heads DMing you Every morning
Starting point is 00:29:45 Being like Chris we need the stuff I thought I had a good draft We need more content I'm glad you brought that up Amanda Because there's a Reddit blackout happening There's some third party app
Starting point is 00:29:53 Circumstances Where people in solidarity Are blacking out Certain reddits Has the CR heads Reddit blacked out I would know Oh okay
Starting point is 00:30:01 You haven't been Haven't visited I haven't visited Like today Have you blacked out Reddit personally? No, I looked at Reddit. I wanted to read about Jokic. I use Reddit as like more like my Twitter.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Wow, by the way, just big, we're done and we can go home. And I love the energy. It was awesome. It's so good. He's magnificent. The parade being on Thursday
Starting point is 00:30:18 is like, no, I have to go home. I have a horse on Sunday. Really special. It's pretty elite for somebody who's like, I have two friends and all I care about is my daughter and my wife. Like, I really, really relate to that. Okay. So, Chris.
Starting point is 00:30:32 I draft first. You have the first overall pick in this year with, as I said, a handful of momentous releases. Where are you going? I'm going to take in Box Office. I'm going to go Ocean's Eleven. Fuck you. I knew you would do that.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Because I just got to be honest, and I don't love a lot of the Box Office hits from this year. So I wanted to get that taken care of. I'm sure there's somewhere in the Shire, a tear is shed over this pick, but it is what it is. Well, let me ask you a question. If you had not taken this film in this category,
Starting point is 00:31:02 is it a drama? I would say it was a comedy. I think comedy. Could it have been drafted in every category? There's a couple of movies that have the same flexibility this year. Yeah, I don't know. I might have tried to put it in as a thriller, but it's thrilling in its star power. It's a keeper, but I mean, whether they're going to get, you know, pull the heist off is not exactly
Starting point is 00:31:27 a suspenseful. I don't know. I don't believe it was nominated for any Academy Awards. It was not. But I was wondering if one of these years it would be funny to change the awards body to like the MTV Movie Awards or something like that. Oh, yeah. What do you think about that?
Starting point is 00:31:42 Do they even have like a record of who was nominated? Of course they do. We, yeah. What do you think about that? Do they even have a record of who was nominated? Of course they do. We have Wikipedia. And all your years at MTV, I know you filed away all that information. 2001 MTV Movie Awards. This is honestly a great idea. They were hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Kirsten Dunst.
Starting point is 00:31:59 That's right. Wow. And the program featured performances from Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Maya Pink, Dave Matthews, Band Weezer, and Sofia Coppola was presented with an award for Best New Filmmaker. Wow. This was Aaliyah's last award show appearance before her death. Please, I wish you hadn't read that out loud. Why?
Starting point is 00:32:17 It's just hurt my heart. What's a fact? I love Aaliyah. I was just going through facts. Here's some of the presenters. Shannon Elizabeth, Allison Hannigan, Tara Reid, and Mina Suvari, together. Sure,
Starting point is 00:32:26 the American Pie trio. Nicole Kidman introduced Christina Aguilera. Sure. Brendan Fraser and The Rock presented best action sequence. Mm-hmm. Destiny's Child
Starting point is 00:32:36 presented breakthrough female. George Lucas presented best new filmmaker to Sofia Coppola. Wow. George Lu... Of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Of course. Friends of Francis Ford, yeah. Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and John Travolta presented Best Movie. They were starring in Swordfish. What was the best movie? Gladiator.
Starting point is 00:32:54 Oh, so this is for the year 2000. Yeah, this is for the year 2000. But this is what happened in 2001. Although this seems to, they have some 2001 movies in here. So they have like Hannibal and stuff like that. Got it.
Starting point is 00:33:06 I mean, that sounds great. We used to be a country. Ocean's Eleven is a truly uniting force amongst this trio of podcasters. We love this movie very much. Social Network, Moneyball, Ocean's Eleven might be our three favorite collective movies. That's the trio. Steven Soderbergh in the news recently. He's been speaking publicly quite a bit
Starting point is 00:33:25 he's got a new series coming on HBO excuse me on Max in July Full Circle written by the great Ed Solomon and also announced
Starting point is 00:33:33 that he's got two more movies in the pipeline the guy fucking works yeah including a comedy yeah I know it's exciting yeah
Starting point is 00:33:40 and Full Circle he is describing as a take on Kurosawa's high and low. Which is just tantalizing. I mean, absolutely lovely. Juliette and I on Jam Session have started a project where we try to identify actual cool men. Because there are not very many of them.
Starting point is 00:33:59 But we had like our first... Well, there aren't. Once you start talking, it's very tough. So we had our first well there aren't once you start talking it's very tough so we had our first committee meeting yesterday is the idea that there's just like an endless
Starting point is 00:34:11 sea of cool women yes you've just gone full heel you're fully you're just Hogan in the NWO this was Julia listen it was
Starting point is 00:34:22 we do some great podcasting over on Jam Session anyway so we had a committee. Imagine if I said, we're trying to find a couple of cool women. Yeah. CR and I were sitting in our garage polishing our Corvette. Who do we got? We got Diane Sawyer.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Yeah. She's cool. Julia Stiles. Angela Merkel. None of those people would meet the cool rankings. Nicole Sturgeon. I'd like to go to Vegas with her. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:48 Yeah, that's good. So we had to bring nominees to the committee yesterday, and I brought Steven Soderbergh. Did she second your nomination? I think one of the categories... Sounds like a hard no. No, I mean, because we had some discussions and one of the questions was whether you need to be like a genuine fun hang to be cool. And I think Juliet felt that Steven Soderbergh might be a little intimidating because of the breadth of his interests and also that he seemingly just like works all the time and is like editing in the car ride on the ride home. You know, He's efficient. He's efficient, which to me is very cool. But I think Juliet
Starting point is 00:35:29 was questioning that. OK, so I my judgment was cool. And then what was her nominee? Just out of curiosity, Barack Obama. I said that. What is this? Well, I well, I I said I don't think that he qualifies because there's too much footage of him dancing available in the world, you know, and it's not like. That's the reason he's not cool. Well, we discounted the policy stuff, Bobby. But just in case you're wondering, we did acknowledge that as well. Bobby, you should bring Yoko over here. Yeah, we got it.
Starting point is 00:35:59 Was Jam Session acquired by Pod Save America? I hadn't heard that. That was Juliet's nominee. The only person who we could universally agree on was Lenny Kravitz. You know, it's funny you mentioned that. I was just listening to some Lenny Kravitz the other day. Not a bad artist. I think
Starting point is 00:36:13 I discounted him completely when I was a kid. I'm completely deaf to his charms. Okay. Really? Yeah. Do you feel that he's just a mimic of other artists? I just have never really dug his stuff at all. Okay. He He also half Jewish Lenny Kravitz. You guys could relate on that.
Starting point is 00:36:30 I like Lenny Kravitz just fine. Yeah. So Lenny Kravitz is the only guy who's got the full go through. I also nominated
Starting point is 00:36:37 Bruce Springsteen. Why are you guys doing? What is this? Is this like a hall of fame? I think it's really hard to be a young cool person. I think the opposite is actually true. are you guys doing what is what is this is this like a hall of fame i think it's really hard to be a young cool person i think the opposite is actually true old people are not cool i think that perhaps your age there's like a devil may care aspect to it but not all old people are
Starting point is 00:36:56 cool you don't think austin butler's cool i don't know like at some point, I listen. Am I a fan of Austin Butler? Yes. Do I think that the accent was like a like try hard to the point of not being cool? Also, yes. I worry that sometimes you think that someone being cool is like, can you sit at a table with Amanda Dobbins and talk about literary fiction when that is not actually cool? But that's your perception of cool. No, that's not. That's not the only qualification. But there is an objective James Dean kind of definition of cool, of masculine cool.
Starting point is 00:37:36 And you just gave us Steven Soderbergh, 70-year-old Bruce Springsteen, Barack Obama. I didn't give you Barack Obama. I'm recapping the conversation. I told you that my verdict was bangs gavel, not cool. You know what? It's a good podcast. It's all started started nobody's saying it's a bad podcast we're trying to get into the psychology of why you only pick geriatric men as cool people like steven soderbergh is like one of my favorite filmmakers but is like i think he's cool i it's just when you're young i've never even seen him like walking like i have
Starting point is 00:38:02 no idea like well i know he's like a floating brain have you ever seen steven soderbergh be like i'm going into a bar can you fucking imagine him doing that he also was like the thing that we he makes like a fucking brandy or whatever that to me is anti-bar behavior it is if you're gonna be like'm going to import some liqueur. Like, fuck that, man. Have a rolling rock. Chill out. Make another oceans movie.
Starting point is 00:38:33 When's the last time you were inside of a bar? Like, two days ago. You were? Yeah. What'd you drink? Well, last time I was in a bar was probably in, legit, like in London. And I had. That was not two days ago. Well, no. I went to a bar was probably in legit like in London and I had. That was not two days ago.
Starting point is 00:38:46 Well, no, I went to a bar in Philadelphia. Okay. And I had a like a Bud Light. Okay. Yeah. That's cool. You watch a sporting match? No, I was just like, I was like on a long like errands run and then I was like, I gotta
Starting point is 00:38:58 have a beer before I go home. You ever do that? Just stop off for one? No, I should. But you would if we lived in a cosmopolitan city like Paris or London or New York City. Exactly. Yeah. We live in one of the greatest cities in the world.
Starting point is 00:39:09 We do? Just slow your roll. We live in a desert. We live in a desert. Cultural and... It's not true. We live in the home of cinema. Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Look what it's doing to you. Yeah. I'm feeling great about everything. New theaters are sprouting every day. You have the second pick. Yes. And we've stalled on your behalf. Well, no, but I was glad that we did that because she was mad.
Starting point is 00:39:30 And then we really like we talked about Barack Obama being the coolest guy ever. We should delete that episode. I want to reiterate that that was Juliet's suggestion. And I gave a verdict of no. Juliet is in my personal Hall of Fame for all living humans. Yeah. That's a bad take. I said that he was not cool.
Starting point is 00:39:50 Okay. I like him despite some of the choices. Yeah. Who do you think is the coolest guy working like out there right now? The coolest guy working? Just the coolest guy that you know.
Starting point is 00:40:01 Not like one of your friends. Dude, that was the other thing. Yeah, it can't be someone you know. Not one of your friends, but just like who's like when. Yeah, it can't be someone you know. Not one of your friends, but just like, who's like when you're just like, this guy is the fucking coolest. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:40:10 Well, and this is a counterintuitive take, but the Nicola Jokic moment you just cited was cool as hell to me. Where he was just like, I don't even need to pretend to be excited about this. Like, this is what I do.
Starting point is 00:40:19 I will destroy you. That was some Terminator shit. I really enjoyed that. Okay. That's not James Dean. Right. but that is he is unflappable. There is a kind of control and poise
Starting point is 00:40:29 that is undeniable. Is he the handsomest guy in the world? No. We were redefining the actual cool. It's not all James Dean. I feel like there's a new paradigm with athletes where Patrick Mahomes seems like kind of a goober
Starting point is 00:40:45 but also is the coolest guy ever. Nah, State Farm commercial's out. Sorry. Just doing a commercial? George Clooney was also disqualified for the Nespresso commercial. Just doing commercials? And also being on the side of a Casamigo.
Starting point is 00:40:57 That's not cool. I mean, George Clooney is like a number one hit, but it's not cool. She's more Gen X than we are. It's crazy. No, I know because she's Amanda hates air that's right I don't hate air
Starting point is 00:41:07 but I well please note who used the climactic speech on his social media recently oh you can't control what he does
Starting point is 00:41:14 he's an artist there's something in the water he's using it's collage he's just he's grabbing from here and there
Starting point is 00:41:22 well lest we intone his name okay you want to cite any cool people you've ever known or ever not known he's grabbing from here and there. Wow. Let's, lest we intone his name. Okay. Uh, you want, you want to cite any cool people you've ever known or never, ever not known? You know,
Starting point is 00:41:31 who's cool? Who's cool? Jacoby. Jacoby is cool. He is cool. Yeah. Easy, easy to be around.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Yeah. Is a trick. I'm not, that's not me. I'm not easy to be around. That's certainly true. And I mean, I think many people would point
Starting point is 00:41:45 to you obviously many people would not me yeah i mean i know the real you i know the pitch framing you you know i know what's what's really under the surface there but uh yeah no it's it's an elusive thing but i would i would probably have a 70 year old cut off okay you know i don't think you can be cool at 70 unless you're like god David Byrne is 71 he's pretty cool David Byrne is cool oh that's a good idea Bobby I didn't think of that
Starting point is 00:42:10 no not a fan no I like I love David Byrne you don't think he's cool you don't think you think the bikes aren't cool he lands hard into the bikes
Starting point is 00:42:17 you know what's cool Mahershala Ali is cool yes there you go that's a good one that's a I look at that person and I'm like
Starting point is 00:42:22 just got it all together yeah talent looks intelligence total package. Hey, do you think Jake Gyllenhaal is cool? No. Damn. I think he's awesome. He tries really hard.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Yeah, he's awesome. That's the thing, is that a lot of people are awesome. He seemed pretty cool with that Lakers game. Well. I can't get the image of him trying to kick game to Lupita out of my head, where it's like, on the one hand, the boldness is so impressive.
Starting point is 00:42:48 On the other hand, if we cut to five seconds later in that photo, I'm a little concerned that he has to turn around and walk away. So, you know the photo I'm talking about? No. He's wearing a gray sweatshirt. They're at a party. And Lupita Nyong'o is there. And he's clearly like, yo like yo girl let me get at you
Starting point is 00:43:05 and she's like kind of entertaining it but not really it's a wonderful image it's a great artifact of modern white masculinity okay it's like the Ethan Hawke
Starting point is 00:43:14 Rihanna very similar yeah Ethan Hawke might be cool Rihanna coolest person just on the planet
Starting point is 00:43:22 but you were talking specifically about men anyway yeah what about Rocky A$AP Rocky is an interesting one coolest person just on the planet. But you were talking specifically about men. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. What about Rocky? Rocky isn't... A$AP Rocky
Starting point is 00:43:29 is an interesting one. It's sort of like a cool by association type thing. He was pretty cool when he was just himself. Yeah, but there's also like
Starting point is 00:43:36 it's very sweet and endearing that he is so into Rihanna. Mm-hmm. But like is maybe... That's maybe not cool. Okay. even though I like him more because of it this is uh let's table this for further investigation okay maybe a maybe a follow-up
Starting point is 00:43:53 jam session episode that Chris and I come in and be the masculine arbiters that's a great idea actually uh okay number two pick uh in drama I'm taking Royal Tenenbaums. Had to do it. Okay. I mean, I think... I have this listed as a comedy. I had it on comedy too, but I accepted as drama. It could go either way. It is a drama as well, for sure. Yeah, I'm mostly filling it out in drama because I think that this is sort of a stronger year for comedies than dramas.
Starting point is 00:44:23 One way in which 2001 is very different from 2023 uh this is my favorite Wes Anderson um is it I think so yeah it is and and part of that is also because I do think this is the first Wes Anderson I saw I remember seeing this in high school which like imagine going and it's it kind of it's like right on the sort of a bridge Wes Anderson in terms of like form and style and it has a lot of the flourishes and the music cues but it's not full um Asteroid City to give an example and to give something that we will talk about next week next week and I'm incredibly excited to talk something that we will talk about... Next week. Next week. And I'm incredibly excited to talk about that.
Starting point is 00:45:07 You haven't seen that yet, right? Nope. Quite an artifact. It's an interesting, really interesting movie. Gwyneth Paltrow, obviously, in this film is just a noir star for yours truly. And, I mean, she is in all things, but especially in this movie. Are you missing any fingers? No. No.
Starting point is 00:45:26 No. But I'm really mad that I missed, like, I wasn't in college yet, so I couldn't do that character for Halloween in college. And by the time I got to college, it was, like, very done. Yeah. And you can't do it anymore.
Starting point is 00:45:41 But that would have been fun. I don't know. I mean, this is just the movie. Like, I hear all of the music cues we were playing uh me and julio for my son the other day and i was like you know i go to that scene what what an artifact yeah wonderful movie uh i don't know it's not it's not my favorite but it's near nearer to the top you did a rewatchable about it. We did. Me and Andy did that. It's interesting to... I don't want to ruin Asteroid City for people, but I feel like this era of his movies
Starting point is 00:46:14 is echoing inside of Asteroid City. Oh, interesting. That's what I will say. Okay. I have two picks. I'm not sure if these would have been my first two picks, but they might have been.
Starting point is 00:46:23 So I feel pretty good about where I'm at. Okay. In Blockbuster, to CR's point about it being kind of a weak field, I have to select Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, which is a movie that I authentically love. Yeah. And, of course, are you giving me a thumbs up? That's kind of like a mean-spirited thumbs up.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Are you going to now do thumbs down? No, I'm just... Do you not like the Lord of the Rings films? That's just like my cool story, bro. But do you really not like these Lord of the Rings films that's just like my cool story bro but do you not do you really not like these movies no I like them
Starting point is 00:46:48 I saw them in college I remember like they before the third film came out they did like a full day thing
Starting point is 00:46:54 you did you went and saw nine hours of I think I only did two and three did you so you were saying cool story bro
Starting point is 00:47:00 because you know he wishes he had oceans or tenenbaums or cool story bro no cause he's just about to talk to me about like hobbits and rings, because you know he wishes he had oceans or tenenbaums? Or cool story, bro? No, because he's just about to talk to me about, like, hobbits and rings and shit, you know? That's not even what I do. Like, I'm not, if Mallory were here, God bless her.
Starting point is 00:47:14 I understand that the Lord of the Rings trilogy, like, transcended the fantasy genre and, like, held America captive. And it's, like, a powerful force. And I think that's wonderful for all of you. Of you? But you saw all three of them in one day.
Starting point is 00:47:30 Like you're trying to. I saw two of three in one day. I'm not trying to do anything. I gave you a thumbs up. I gave you a thumbs up. Here's the inherent flaw with the Amanda pursuit. You have corrupted
Starting point is 00:47:42 your own ability to have an objective opinion of something that is good. Because you need to distance yourself from what you imagine to be the fandoms of these things. This is the rare case where this is an unimpeachable franchise. These three films are beloved. And just because you feel it is your duty to cry about fandom and men. You just had to say the phrase unimpeachable franchise like angrily.
Starting point is 00:48:03 I feel good about it. So that's on you and all the listeners at home are clapping they're like thank god Sean came to play today yeah that's good he brought Peter Jackson's
Starting point is 00:48:12 master work to the fore I was just giving you a thumbs up man you do what you want with it your derisiveness is not appreciated but I feel good about the pick did I say did I say shit Your derisiveness is not appreciated.
Starting point is 00:48:27 But I feel good about the pick. Did I say shit when you took Royal Tenenbaums? No. What were you going to say? What would you have said? I would have said like, you know, is that in the right category or blah, blah, blah. But it is in the right category. It can go either way.
Starting point is 00:48:43 You put it in drama, right? Yes, I did. Okay. Where would you have put it? I think I probably would have said it was a comedy, but I don't have a problem with it in drama, obviously, like the Luke Wilson and Gwyneth Paltrow plot. That part wasn't funny to you? Well, it's dramatic.
Starting point is 00:48:56 Yeah. Elliot Smith playing over a lot of comedies these days? Not really. No. No, not really. Okay. Next pick in drama. No, not really. Okay. Next pick in drama.
Starting point is 00:49:08 This is really easy. Mulholland Drive. Okay. David Lynch's one of David Lynch's masterpieces among many. One of the
Starting point is 00:49:18 best movies ever about Los Angeles and an ambition and the confusion of stardom and and living behind a diner uh yeah what is the scare the scariest jump scare of the 21st century probably uh you know his movies are often about
Starting point is 00:49:32 the dream state amanda i'm not sure if you've heard that yeah where sometimes what you think is happening is not really happening the ultimate disorientation yeah have you seen mulholland drive i have and i was recently at Vidiot's, which is the new rep theater and video store that opened in our, in my and Sean's neighborhood. And they are showing Mulholland Drive this week. And I watched a trailer for it and I was like, wow, good movie. Maybe I will come to this, but then I couldn't find a sitter. So, so I didn't see it this time great story thanks for sharing
Starting point is 00:50:05 well but it looks great if you're free in the northeast Los Angeles area and want to go see Mulholland Drive you should
Starting point is 00:50:12 I also just want to say I thought you were going to be like if you're free in the northeast Los Angeles area you want to come visit
Starting point is 00:50:16 well I do I do actually did I tell you about this that when I some guy dressed as Frodo Baggins shows up to your house I hear there's a job opening.
Starting point is 00:50:28 Is that your hobbit voice? I wanted to make it so that you could see some of the great cinema videos. So I will be watching your child. The movie phone guy. Is this Elijah Wood? Yeah, I don't know. Is he busy? That would be great to go back and put that voice into the hobbit. I think if you were going to remix it, it needs a little bit of like,'t know. Was he busy? That would be great to go back and put that voice into The Hobbit.
Starting point is 00:50:45 I think if you were going to remix it, it needs a little bit of like, you know. Why don't you just tell me the vidiot screening you'd like to attend? When I went to vidiots, though, I was like, I wonder if there are any potential babysitters in here. Don't touch the ring, Boromir! It didn't meet at me. Maybe next time. Were you a big Boromir guy? I'm a big Sean Bean dude in general.
Starting point is 00:51:07 I see. What does that entail? Just loving his work. You know? I love him in Ronin. I love him in Lord of the Rings. I love him in Game of Thrones. The fans of the film Ronin were disappointed
Starting point is 00:51:19 that you didn't even utter the word Ronin I was surprised by that. on the De Niro pod. Sorry. I mean, he did make 60 movies. We talk about a lot of them. Was that sorry to me or to them? I'm sorry to the entirety of internet commentary
Starting point is 00:51:33 that is based on you didn't mention this thing that I also know about. I'm so glad you brought it up. Literally all of those people die in a fire. That's my review of anybody who responds to any piece of content with you forgot about yeah literally we didn't i know about it i promise i know about it i'm quite certain i know about whatever stupid thing you know i told you that i don't know where this energy is coming from
Starting point is 00:51:56 okay all right so you picked you picked one day we'll just declare a day where you get to go in the mentions and just absolutely tell everyone off. And then I got your back. Okay. And I'll just be like, yeah. No, I'm doing it right here. Okay. Yeah. I just am like, I know about Ronan.
Starting point is 00:52:14 I did it on the rewatchables. Like, I'm pretty into that movie. It just didn't come up in the De Niro draft. Would it be helpful if I individually respond to everyone who mentioned that you didn't mention Ronan? Just tag me in it, though. Yeah. Yeah. I'll tag you, Donald Trump Jr. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:30 Who else? The Attorney General's office? Glenn Greenwald to get the signal boost. Just to get the truth out? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Ed Snowden.
Starting point is 00:52:36 Should we make sure he's aware? Who else? Is Glenn Greenwald... Who was the person who fucked up reality stuff in Intercept? But he was working there, right? He just didn't touch it. Reality Winner stuff? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:48 I don't know. I don't know who the reporter was. Okay. You are concerned about Reality Winner's future? Well, I think she's out of jail, right? I want you to know that Reality Winner isn't actually Sydney Sweeney. So, it's like you're concerned for her? Just keep that in mind when you're thinking about it.
Starting point is 00:53:07 I think we should protect our sources. Better. Okay. Okay, Amanda, you have a pick. Okay. I guess I'm going to go with strategy here. And in action horror thriller, I will take training day. Oh, get the fuck out of here, Amanda.
Starting point is 00:53:20 Well, you know what? You took ocean celebrity. What do you want me to do? I fucking said, like, five words nice nice to him and now we're in war. What the fuck is the matter with you? You left me with no choice. There's all these fucking movies you see and think. You left me with no choice.
Starting point is 00:53:34 I don't like those. I don't remember what happens in Vanilla Sky, okay? You don't fucking like Gosford Park? So that was, I do, but maybe I'm going to take you in a different category. You blew it! Okay. Oh, boy. What did you take this in?
Starting point is 00:53:49 Drama or Oscar? Action, horror, thriller. You know what? All right. If you want different outcomes, then you can suggest different categories. Because here's what's happened. Here's the tension between you and me. Is I really have to pad out this category every single time.
Starting point is 00:54:05 Oh, action horror thriller? Yeah, you know? And so I have to take movies. So what would be like if we were going to do this, this, this genre? Like, would you want it to be more like what would be like a better like combination of subgenres? That's a good question. I mean, some years I have plenty of action thriller. And I just I didn't really have that many that I have plenty of action thriller and I just I
Starting point is 00:54:25 didn't really have that many that I remember all of the plots of this year broker a trade training day was the movie that I saw in successive days oh really that was my form of I saw that I actually thought it was going to be a different film that was also available in this category in in action horror thriller yeah well there are several movies there there i'm i'm just joking there's lots of really good movies left in action horror thriller but i was just saying training day was the movie that i saw once and then i i was like gotta go see that again give me your power rankings antoine fuqua films five to one tears of the sun number one uh no uh i think this is pretty high up there this is it right this is the this is the best
Starting point is 00:55:06 this is the best equalizer two is number two i'm so pumped for equalizer three is pedro pascal's equalizer two right uh yes that was fucking sick when he's just like i'm pro equalizer movies but only in the movie theater like if it's on tnt i'm like i don't know i don't have time to watch this but when i'm in the movie theater on opening night and I'm like, Denzel Washington just shot that guy in the ear. I'm very excited. Yeah. Also, Denzel, extremely cool. He is, but he is quite daddish.
Starting point is 00:55:34 Yeah. I mean, so I invented a category that was cool emeritus. Okay. Yeah. I buy that. And Jay-Z is also in that category. So Denzel Washington and Jay-Z are cool emeritus, but Barack Obama was just straight cool.
Starting point is 00:55:47 I want to emphasize. I know, I know. I'm asking. Barack Obama was found not cool. Was Henry Kissinger on this list as well? Chris has a pick. Oh, it's my turn? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Right? Yeah. Yeah. Training Day is great. You too. I love Training Day. Training Day is really good. I'll do Memento for Yeah. Yeah. Training Day is great. You too. I love Training Day. Training Day is really good. I'll do Memento for drama.
Starting point is 00:56:07 Okay. This is the movie that I thought changed your movie-going life. I love Memento. I do too. Yeah. Yeah. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:56:16 You could say my love affair with Christopher Nolan's cinema started here. Yes. Yeah. And has only grown stronger and stronger. It wasn't the film following his debut? So, you are... Are you starting the Whisper campaign yet?
Starting point is 00:56:27 The anti-Oppenheimer Whisper campaign? Am I starting it? Yeah, like are you being like, ooh, heard it's not going to do too well. Like, ooh, heard the third act has some problems. I won't weigh in on the film until I've seen it. I hope to see it soon. Did you see him being like,
Starting point is 00:56:41 we can functionally recreate the experience of having a nuclear weapon detonate in front of you? Yeah, I would say I'm a little concerned about just the way that that's been framed, storytelling-wise. But in general, creativity reigns. You know, that's my take. Yeah. Not much else to it. Memento, terrific film.
Starting point is 00:57:02 Yeah. Great idea. Beautifully executed. Yes. Fantastic central performance. From Joeo, terrific film. Yeah. Great idea. Beautifully executed. Yes. Fantastic central performance. From Joe Pantoliano. Yeah. Carrie-Anne Moss?
Starting point is 00:57:11 Where is she? She's sitting on a throne of money. I bet. Do you think? No, I don't. I don't think. Yeah, that's sad. I don't think she is.
Starting point is 00:57:20 I don't think she got well compensated for being in the Matrix films. For being Trinity? Yeah. I'm sure she did fine. Pretty well. She was not a brand name when she was cast, so I'm not sure what her leverage there was. She probably had some leverage for four, right?
Starting point is 00:57:33 Yeah. Sure. Yes. It's like a small throne? Yes. A little baby throne for Carrie Ann Moss. That's great. Is there anything scurrilous about her that I don't know about?
Starting point is 00:57:43 I wouldn't know. Okay. She's quality. I wouldn't know. Okay. She's quality. Keanu Reeves. Cool. Again, a bit daddish at this stage of his life.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Why? Because he got the band back together and it's just like... Dogstar? Yeah. Did he get Dogstar back together? He played with Dogstar
Starting point is 00:57:59 for the first time in like 10 years. A bit daddish? Yeah. What are you talking about? Name one Dogstar song. I don't know any dog star song. How come?
Starting point is 00:58:06 I just want there to be somebody under 35 here. Okay. Yeah. Well, this is like an ongoing thing we've been discussing in our culture, right?
Starting point is 00:58:15 We don't make new movie stars. We don't make new rock stars. We don't, you know. Do you think Michael Fassbender is cool? He's trying too hard with the car racing. I just think he has a hobby.
Starting point is 00:58:24 And also he crashed out at so it's uncool to crash out at le mans yeah i mean if you're gonna do this commit to it you know and do it right um he's fine okay do you think david fincher is cool i don't yeah i don't you don't no i think he's a genius but i think he's like a weird technocrat okay i mean he's literally like what i like to do is see people get violently killed he's like i i like to orchestrate imagery of death like is that cool i mean he's he's a wonderful wonderful filmmaker he's literally his highs
Starting point is 00:59:07 make me feel as great about art as anything in the world yeah he's not cool okay I wonder what kind of car he drives
Starting point is 00:59:14 that would go a long way of determining it for me honestly probably a Porsche yeah that would be cool like if he no that would be too try hard I don't think you can be
Starting point is 00:59:22 I don't think you can be cool if you drive a Porsche you want him to drive like a CRV? What do you want him to have? No, I want him to have something like cooler and less try-hard. All like really obvious luxury sports cars are not cool. Boy, it's a small needle we're threading. It is.
Starting point is 00:59:40 It really, really is very hard. I gotta say, you're super idiosyncratic. And you think that your vision of the world is like, accept it. I'm just... I don't know what you're talking about. I'm just sharing it with people. All guys want Porsches. That's a weird take.
Starting point is 00:59:55 Porsches are try hard? Yeah, because you got to work fucking hard to get a Porsche. From like the most nerdy Northeastern liberal elite to the deepest MAGA scumbag, we're all like, we want Porsches. Right's what that's it's really basic and that's what makes it uncool you gotta have imagination you gotta know a little more um I mean I'm glad that this is the through line for this conversation because it is weird uh I think you have so you have another pick do I'm on the turn here yeah okay um so I have box office and I have uh drama pick. I'm on the turn here? Yeah. Okay. So I have box office, and I have drama, and then I'm going to get sexy beast and Oscar nomination.
Starting point is 01:00:32 Cool. Interesting. That's good. Was it Kingsley who was nominated there? Yeah. Although I would make the argument that Jonathan Glazer should have been nominated instead of Ron Howard, who actually won this year. What's your take on A Beautiful Mind,
Starting point is 01:00:46 which I assume is not going to be selected here. I got to be completely 100 honest with you. I've never seen A Beautiful Mind. Wow. Yeah. Okay. I've seen Cinderella Man. Well, I'll tell you this.
Starting point is 01:00:57 It was shot by Roger Deakins. Yeah. And it looks amazing. I'm not a huge fan of the script. He writes on the window. I saw it. I mean, I know the meme. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:05 Yeah. It's a huge fan of the script. He writes on the window. I saw it. I mean, I know the meme. Yeah. Yeah. It's a stellar looking movie. Yeah. Jennifer Connelly won an Academy Award for her performance in the film as well. You love Jennifer Connelly. I sure do. Yeah. Maybe check it out.
Starting point is 01:01:14 Fire it up. Okay. See what you think. Okay. I'll report back. That film was very successful as well. This is back when they used to make movies like this and they just... Okay.
Starting point is 01:01:26 So what categories you took? I have Oscar nom drama and now I have... And I have... Yeah, Oscar nomination drama box office. Okay. All right, Amanda. I really can do anything I want at this point.
Starting point is 01:01:44 That's always been true. Well, I know, but like, why are you looking at me like that? I'm just waiting to hear what you have to say. You're still so mad at me. It's just, maybe I don't. Maybe Chris is going to come for me. And I think it's probably... Oh, you're thinking about leaving something out there for the next time?
Starting point is 01:02:01 But I don't think you will, but we have established on previous drafts, you look, Sean's doing like sad Ben Affleck right now, that you got to draft with your heart. So an Oscar nominee, I will take Bridget Jones' Diary, which is one of my favorite movies.
Starting point is 01:02:18 Was this nominated for coolest guy in a movie? I don't recall. Renee Zellweger was nominated for best actress. That's great. Absolute jackass. I love a movie. I don't recall. Renee Zellweger was nominated for Best Actress. You absolute jackass. I love this movie. The speech from this
Starting point is 01:02:32 movie, the column for the speech from this movie was quite literally a reading at my wedding. Not one that Sean or Chris performed. No.
Starting point is 01:02:38 You guys got other beautiful selections. We did. Upon reflection, do you wish that I had read it? No. My friend Willa read this one and that was great.
Starting point is 01:02:49 And we made you read like the outro from Drake's Take Care, right? And that is still one of the best things that I've ever done. Literally the reason why there are no rappers on the cool guys list anymore is because Drake took over rap.
Starting point is 01:03:02 And that is true. That's just a fact. And then we made Chris and John co-read a poem, which was, remember that? That was the funniest thing. That was wonderful.
Starting point is 01:03:13 Who wrote the poem? Friedrich Siddal, right? Yeah. It was like at the Carlisle. I think that was his act choice. And Chris, you've committed it to memory. So please read it here.
Starting point is 01:03:21 I do. I did not commit it to memory, but I also gave a speech at the rehearsal dinner, didn didn't i yeah yeah you both gave we both did yeah yeah do you remember what you talked about i did i talked about lord of the rings the fellowship of the ring as i recall i used samwise gamgee and frodo as a sort of metaphor for zach and amanda and how their journey together rising to the top of a fiery mountain to drop a ring into its center culminated in a marriage. I talked about how I had very high standards for Zach and his partners, but knowing that he was marrying someone who loved training day this month
Starting point is 01:03:56 made it okay. And I was ready to see my little bird fly away. It was, it was really beautiful. Impressionate, both those speeches. Okay, so Bridget Jones Diary. Great film. Okay, that was not on my board. You know what?
Starting point is 01:04:17 No one cares. You'll find about that. Hmm, what to do, what to do. I've got two picks here. I'm going to take a film that I don't think either of you are planning to take, but I do. I've got two picks here. I'm going to take a film that I don't think either of you are planning to take, but I need to speak my truth.
Starting point is 01:04:28 In Oscar nominee, I'm taking AI, Artificial Intelligence, which I think is one of the greatest Steven Spielberg movies ever made, of course, started by Stanley Kubrick, unfinished,
Starting point is 01:04:37 Kubrick passed away. This is also the year that there was the Kubrick doc, right? A Life in Pictures. Yeah. Which features a lot of Tom Cruise, very focused explaining why Stanley was a master. As opposed to distracted Tom Cruise,
Starting point is 01:04:50 who's kind of like not really committed to the bit. Even by Cruise standards though, it seems like he is on all of the Adderall in this documentary, but I liked it. And I love AI. I've talked about AI many times when talking about Spielberg's work and just what a heartbreaking and beautiful movie this is.
Starting point is 01:05:07 And just frankly, back in the news, as chat GPT and the writer's strike. Have you tried it out yet? I have not. I have a little bit of the like, once I put my, will I never be able to get it back
Starting point is 01:05:20 feeling about this. Is this like her not using the cloud or you just mean once you break the seal, you're going to be using it all the time? I 23 and me so it's all over and i this feels different somehow because well one i'm already in ai right all of we all of us are anyway anyone who's spoken on a podcast is inside of ai unfortunately i the ai is us i i've said this before like i just i literally was raised by movies that said,
Starting point is 01:05:46 do not do AI. No matter what you do, do not develop this technology because it will become machines that destroy us. Yeah. And,
Starting point is 01:05:55 I feel that those artists who made those films were right about that. And so, I know it's like, simultaneously a political football right now and a super funny thing
Starting point is 01:06:03 to joke about and also this like, objective derision on social media but i am like pretty afraid of it and i'm not afraid to say it i don't think it's a good idea and there's no stopping it now and we're headed towards it and yada yada yada but i'm genuinely concerned in like 50 years my daughter's gonna be like imprisoned in a like a you know, like enslaved. But she could then become the Sarah Connor of our future. That's very possible. She's certainly
Starting point is 01:06:31 got a lot of strong ideas at this stage of her life. So maybe she will be able to fight in the resistance. What do you think? How do you feel about it? I'm not really pro. You know, I'm not particularly interested. I never really liked all those movies where it's like oh are we gonna let them take over
Starting point is 01:06:46 but also do they have feelings and it's like they don't have feelings to me and I think David in the film AI did have feelings he learned to have feelings
Starting point is 01:06:54 alright well that's nice Haley Joel Osment wonderful performance this you know it's a Spielbergian approach I haven't done Chat GPT either you have
Starting point is 01:07:02 I tried it and I don't really understand it because like it stops at 2021. Like it's information kind of like stops. You know, it's been really interesting that I've observed.
Starting point is 01:07:11 I've been meaning to talk about this on the show actually. So I'm glad you asked Amanda. We get like a lot of pitches for the Ringer film side here. And a lot of the pitches now feature mid-journey, which is, you know,
Starting point is 01:07:21 AI animation, AI art to render in pitches what a film will look like and so this is very common now so you'll say like here's the prompt for the documentary concept or even for a scripted concept and then you'll plug it into mid journey and they will show you what they want the film to look like and some of the time it looks strange and it has that kind of warped ai animation and sometimes you'll be looking at an image and you'll be like in a in a pitch deck and it'll be like is this did you shoot something did you did you photograph something uh so i mean it's obviously it's a remarkable technology that
Starting point is 01:07:54 is still evolving but it is quite chilling and um i don't want it bob ai pro i think you guys probably know my feelings on ai yeah Yeah. That it's pretty cool. Yeah, that it's cool. And I use it to edit all of our podcasts. So if you guys ever say anything that you don't want in here, I hope it's doing a good job. Bob, are you at a wedding or something? What's going on here? No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:08:15 I'm at my parents' house. Oh, I was just wondering if that was a suit bag. It is. There was a wedding a couple weeks ago. But no, I'm not at a wedding. Yeah, actually, the ceremony is starting. So if you guys could really wrap this up, maybe no more talk about cool people. Just a classic Tuesday wedding weeks ago, but no. I'm not at a wedding. Yeah, actually, the ceremony's starting. So if you guys could really wrap this up, maybe no more talk about cool people. Just a classic Tuesday wedding before Trump's indictment.
Starting point is 01:08:31 In action horror thriller, I'm taking Vanilla Sky. Good. I stand tall on Vanilla Sky Mountain. Are you alone up there? Bill's on that, like, a peak there. I don't know. I mean, I really want to do this on the real life. Bill might be on base Camp with Vanilla Sky.
Starting point is 01:08:55 Of course, a somewhat maligned adaptation of Abre los Ojos, the Spanish film. It's a leap for Cameron Crowe. It's Cameron Crowe trying to do something he had never done before. A proper, frankly, like, attempted a Lynchian-style thriller starring Tom Cruise. Can you tell me what happens in this movie in three sentences? I definitively cannot. Okay.
Starting point is 01:09:15 Have you seen it? It doesn't mean I don't understand what happened, but it is quite complex. Would you like me to summarize the Fellowship of the Ring in three sentences? Yeah, let's go. There's a ring. Yeah. That is very powerful.
Starting point is 01:09:29 And it needs to be taken back to its source to be destroyed. Okay. And a group of guys do it. That this is the beginning of their journey. Wow. That was actually two sentences, actually. I mean, it could have been one. There were a lot of ands.
Starting point is 01:09:44 You did not mention Boromir in that notably didn't hear his name I really I loved I loved Vanilla Sky
Starting point is 01:09:53 when it came out I really like these kinds of films like John Frankenheimer's Seconds is a very it's very in conversation with Vanilla Sky
Starting point is 01:10:01 these sort of like the fourth season of Barry is in conversation with Vanilla Sky these kind of dream states these distorted realities and characters which is weird conversation with Vanilla Sky. These sort of like, the fourth season of Barry is in conversation with Vanilla Sky. These kind of... Dream states. Dream states. These distorted realities
Starting point is 01:10:08 and characters. Which is weird. I just feel like you're just two feet on the ground. Are you being serious? Yeah. I mean, it's interesting that you find like
Starting point is 01:10:15 the life of the mind in film to be so interesting when you're not like, oh, you know, like I'm floating through, I'm microdosing. Guess what I dreamed about last night?
Starting point is 01:10:23 I think that's probably why though, don't you think? If I were microdosing regularly, I probably wouldn't even I think that's probably why though don't you think if I were micro dosing regularly I probably wouldn't even watch films I probably would just just close your eyes close my eyes
Starting point is 01:10:30 but I don't have that that's beautiful that's my version of escape okay some of us go to training day you know we watch
Starting point is 01:10:39 Detective Alonzo definitely pistol whip people car blowed and go see training day okay Amanda you're up. In comedy, another film I don't think either of you are going to take, but it's a Stone Cold classic.
Starting point is 01:10:53 It's Legally Blonde. So this one I remember seeing with two friends from high school. And I did not like it the first time that I saw it. I was kind of like, I don't know. It's not that funny. And my two friends were like, yeah, that's because you're like too much of a nerd and you don't want someone. They were like, and so you don't think it's funny that she gets into Harvard and does
Starting point is 01:11:13 all these things because you've been trying too hard. And I was like, you know what? They owned me. They were right. And then I watched it again. And it's absolutely delightful. Thank you, Reese Witherspoon. Was that the last time somebody owned you?
Starting point is 01:11:25 I was going to gonna say interesting lineage of getting owned by your friends yeah I like Legally Blonde yeah it's funny yeah it's really
Starting point is 01:11:33 it's very funny the third one is happening yes didn't Mindy Kaling write it allegedly you think it's a good idea I don't know where is
Starting point is 01:11:43 was Elle Woods a part of January 6th that would v i don't think so yeah that would be that would be really good yeah um i don't really i know she goes to dc and legally blonde too but that was why i asked is it explain what side of the aisle she sits on there in legally blonde uh two i don't remember honestly like major marjorie Taylor Greene vibes out of her, you know? Okay. Yeah. How did this crazy gal get to the top?
Starting point is 01:12:13 No? Am I wrong? No. You're right. Okay. Are you now reconsidering perhaps the source text? I mean, I don't remember what happens in Legally Blonde 2, so I can't speak to her political persuasions. And, you know,
Starting point is 01:12:26 one, she's on the side of not sending people to jail for crimes they didn't commit. Doesn't she humiliate Linda Cardellini's character on the stand, though? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:36 Well, but only because Linda Cardellini doesn't know the proper perm regulations. I see. You know? And she doesn't know or she forgets them and thinks that no one else will notice.
Starting point is 01:12:49 Mm-hmm. So. Really makes you think. Yeah. Sierra, you're up. My last two. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:12:55 Fire away. For wild card, I'm taking Ali. Aha. Mm. Not on my list. Still the best opening 10 minutes of a film in the 21st century wow i well that's a podcast idea i think i think i mean like i have to i just came up with that but i was re-watching it last night and for people who haven't seen ollie recently it's cassius clay training running
Starting point is 01:13:22 through the streets at night man doing digital photography of the night sky and the moon is there. You know what I mean? And then cutting between a Sam Cooke live performance and then Ollie training in a gym with Ron Silver and Jamie Foxx. And then it kind of goes back into his childhood. It's this amazing prologue to the film. I think this is actually a really wonderful and underrated Michael Mann movie.
Starting point is 01:13:48 It's a great Will Smith performance. It's a fucking amazing Jamie Foxx performance. Bundini Brown. Yeah. So I'm going to take this on wild card. What do you think of John Voight? He won. Dee Whitner.
Starting point is 01:13:57 He was nominated for Howard Cosell here. I think Jamie should have gotten nominated. Have you seen Ali? Not in many years. You think I overrate it? No, I wouldn't say that to you about a Michael Mann film. Sorry for caring about American history. That's what it speaks to you about.
Starting point is 01:14:13 That's what it is. It's not Michael Mann style. Is Michael Mann cool? I think so. Interesting. Is Adam Driver cool? I don't think so. Ooh. Interesting. Wow. Is Adam Driver cool? I don't think so. I like Adam Driver a lot.
Starting point is 01:14:31 And he's probably the coolest. Well, no. Harrison Ford is cool. And he was in Star Wars. Why are they all senior citizens? What's wrong? It's her kink. This is the thing.
Starting point is 01:14:43 No, it's not. It's big daddy energy, you know? If you're 70, you're in. I just, Adam Driver seems...
Starting point is 01:14:52 Gosling? Gosling is cool. We talked about it and Julia proposed it and I was like, I think so. I think, I think Robert Pattinson
Starting point is 01:15:01 might be cool. Mookie Betts? Yeah. He's cool. Yeah, he's cool. That's a goodookie Betts? Yeah. He's cool. Yeah, he's cool. That's a good one. That's good. He is cool.
Starting point is 01:15:08 Yeah. I would have said Otani, except he does FTX commercials, so he kind of lost that for me. Yeah. Wow. He does FTX commercials? Still? Well, he did until that wasn't a business anymore. Okay.
Starting point is 01:15:19 I didn't know that. That sucks. Do I have a pick? Or he has another pick? I have another pick. I believe Chris has one more. Okay. And this is, it's my comedy. And I have a pick? Or he has another pick? I have another pick. I believe Chris has one more. Okay. And this is,
Starting point is 01:15:26 it's my comedy. And I'm going to pick Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Bobby hit it. Oh, God. Type this shit down. All you motherfuckers are going to pay.
Starting point is 01:15:40 You are the ones who are the ball lickers. We're going to fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little whiny bitches um it's mostly for the the mooburger the movies scene where they get on uh ain't it cool news and respond to commenters i guess you might want to put a little bit of context around jane silent bob's right back i'm just gonna put that out there like i should explain what it is? A little, perhaps a bit. It's a spinoff from Clerks.
Starting point is 01:16:10 And it's the characters, Jay and Silent Bob, who find out that Miramax is making a film about their lives. So they are going to Hollywood from New Jersey to stop this movie from being made. Are you not into Jay and Silent Bob? I absolutely love it. Okay, don't back away from the eschew verse yet.
Starting point is 01:16:29 I punted on the Kevin Smith episode and we never figured it out. And we gotta figure it out. I almost don't want to burn the takes here. That's how I feel about it. I just want to clarify, you have one more pick. Do I? Yeah. What do I have another pick in? Oh, it's gonna circle back around to you. Action horror thriller. I just wanted to make sure. Do I? Yeah. What do I have another pick in? Oh, it's going to circle back around to you. Action horror thriller.
Starting point is 01:16:46 Action horror thriller. I'm fine with that. I just wanted to make sure. I was really confused. I'm happy for you. Yeah. Thanks for looking directly at me
Starting point is 01:16:53 as you announced it. That's fine. You guys have Have you seen Jay and Silent Bob strike back? I don't believe that I have. Well, when you go back
Starting point is 01:17:01 and listen to the tape, Bobby will play one of the great clips of our time. Do you think it would be a good idea for the four of us to have a live event screening of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back at the Academy Museum? What do you think?
Starting point is 01:17:15 Will you be leading tours afterwards? The abandoned Cinerama Dome? Yeah, get it on 70mm. Nolan can introduce us. Great, yeah. And then we can speak about the film. He can detonate a non-lethal nuclear weapon on us. In case you're wondering which movies I saw in the theater on opening night
Starting point is 01:17:32 while I was in college in 2001, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is on the list. Yeah, so I wanted to speak to that experience. And spoken you have. The beef is real here. No, no, no, no. The beef is real. No, it's not. it's not no it's totally you know how i know it is is because you're listening no no no no no no it's not it's not it's not we're not beef you're you're we're great big man he carried half of my toiletries through heathrow security that was a nice moment chris is my guy for life yeah for for that that was really loving yeah you meanwhile
Starting point is 01:18:04 were just like hiding somewhere like fumbling with like your various shampoos. This is honestly how I felt about that moment. I felt that I was not being looked after having never had that experience.
Starting point is 01:18:14 I picked up your luggage for you like a cuck while you talked on the phone. Like remember? No. Oh yeah. When we got to Sweden we identified your bag.
Starting point is 01:18:24 We were your luggage hammers. We were looking out for you the whole time. You guys make it sound like you, like, traversed the city. You, like, pulled it off a carousel and handed it to me. What the fuck? All right. All right. We'll save it for the travel pod.
Starting point is 01:18:37 Okay. The spinoff show that we've been doing with JMO, the travel show. Okay. Gang Busters. Yeah. Really? It's been phenomenal. Amazing numbers.
Starting point is 01:18:44 We got to get you on. that's really exciting i think given yokich's success we're going to travel back to serbia yeah nicola beautiful you should join us we can talk about summer in delgade yes uh chris's ranking of places you can travel to that that jake gyllenhaal has done movies in the like jake gyllenhaal location that's right, the Jake Gyllenhaal location series that Chris has been working on, that's been doing very well. But when you think of ambulance, all you need to do is go to the LA River Basin, and that is the ultimate vacation.
Starting point is 01:19:12 That is where we thrive. I think I'm going to do Wild Card now. Not that I think anyone is going to take this from me. Maybe you will, but I don't know. Zoolander in Wild Card. Interesting. me maybe you will but i don't know zoolander in wild card interesting um this movie infamously was released a few weeks after some events in september of this year that we do not need to get into um and the the viewing populace was not ready for a comedy and it absolutely tanked and so i don't think i saw it then i saw it when I my freshman year of college
Starting point is 01:19:46 and I remember it like played in like the communal room in the dorm my freshman year just like on loop and so I've seen this movie a thousand times it is incredibly funny to me um and as we discovered I don't remember what podcast we were doing. Some sort of comedies. And I rewatched it and learned that I just like a lot of my joke speaking style is just like cribbed from Zoolander, you know? Give me an example. Well, you know when Owen Wilson is like accepting the Fashion Award and he's talking about Sting and he's like, I don't know. I've never heard any of his music music but I like him and he's there
Starting point is 01:20:25 and it's important you know and I was like oh that's where I got that so Zoolander what is this a center for ants
Starting point is 01:20:32 I say that all the time no one else knows that reference but yeah that's the funniest joke in that movie yeah I like Zoolander a lot
Starting point is 01:20:39 you don't like it yeah I like Zoolander you Ben Stiller guy three time guest on the watch? Only once. Only once. Six-time guest?
Starting point is 01:20:48 Escape from D'Amora. Okay. Yeah. You are a medium, mid. Yeah, I would say I am a middle, right in the middle of the road. Right. If you had to choose a character
Starting point is 01:20:58 from a Ben Stiller film that you most associate yourself with, it is Robert Downey Jr. in Tropical. Yeah. Yeah. No. Are you Tom Cruise from Tropic Thunder? Honestly, yes.
Starting point is 01:21:12 In many ways. I have two picks. Is that right? Yeah. I believe so. Your last two picks. My last two picks. My empty categories
Starting point is 01:21:20 at the moment are comedy and wild card. It's a great turn of events. There's a lot of good films on the board. Did you think this was a funny year at the moment are comedy and wild card. It's a great turn of events. There's a lot of good films on the board. Did you think this was a funny year of the movies? A funny year. Yeah, a comedic year. Well, the movie I think is the funniest movie of the year is still on the board.
Starting point is 01:21:34 I don't think I saw this movie in theaters. I'm almost certain I didn't. It went on to become a huge cult object. I missed it because it didn't play in very many theaters. It's Wet Hot American Summer. Of course. I was a massive, massive fan of The State on MTV growing up. The State, even more so, I would say, than Saturday Night Live, switched me on to a very
Starting point is 01:21:57 specific kind of comedy and tone of comedy. I go back and look at The State now. I own every episode on DVD. And I'm somewhat confused by what I liked because it is quite strange and strained and clearly the work of a bunch of really young kids. But Wet Hot American Summer is something actually
Starting point is 01:22:13 we just got a mailbag question about which is why don't we get parody movies anymore? Why don't we get spoofs? And this is a very, very, very loving spoof. I think probably because superhero movies are so prevalent now and it would be too expensive to make a superhero parody and i think there are also so few other genres that are meaningful in the culture at the moment that there's just not
Starting point is 01:22:38 a lot of opportunity to do so this was probably made you know 10 to 15 years after the heyday of the summer camp coming of age comedy. But this is a great example. And obviously casting a bunch of people who look like they're 32 years old to play kids is part of the genius of the movie. But David Wayne directed, Michael Showalter co-wrote, Ken Marino, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, star-studded cast. A lot of people, the first time you'd seen them or second time you'd seen them. What's that? Bradley Cooper.
Starting point is 01:23:04 Bradley Cooper, first time you'd seen them or second time you'd seen them. What's that? Bradley Cooper. Bradley Cooper. First time seeing him in a movie. Amy Poehler. A number of star-studded folks. Just super, super funny movie. So that's an easy one for me. Ghost World was kind of running in second place.
Starting point is 01:23:16 I love Ghost World, the Terry Zweigoff movie. And then for Wild Card, I mean, this might be the best movie of the year in the mood for love one car wise like full-blown masterpiece which amanda just talked about on our most romantic movies podcast uh a yearning document um did you relate to the film in the mood for love i loved it i didn't what can i say amazing cinematography ever committed beautiful film uh celluloid yeah
Starting point is 01:23:43 christopher doyle no thoughts that's it i i forgot when i made my list at 8 20 this morning Amazing cinematography ever committed. Beautiful film. To a celluloid. Yeah. Christopher Doyle. No thoughts? That's it? I forgot when I made my list at 8.20 this morning. That In the Mood for Love was out there? Yeah. I'm like, oh shit, right now. That's okay. But it was just kind of a rush, you know, to hand my child off and put some films together.
Starting point is 01:24:02 That's the thing is we're not machines. Yeah. When we make these drafts it's it's a really good human error is a factor yeah and i was able to wait until the 16th pick i messed up on that one that's it so i feel great about that obviously um i think i smashed this but amanda you got another pick yeah i mean i'm really I'm in a tough spot here. So what do you have left? Well, I have Black Buster left.
Starting point is 01:24:28 Oh, no. Yeah. How exciting. Exactly. There's some stuff. Is there? Let's just go through it. Number one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a movie for children.
Starting point is 01:24:38 Number two, Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, drafted by Sean. He was very proud. Three, Shrek. I saw this movie. I liked it. I didn't. You didn't see it or you didn't like it?
Starting point is 01:24:49 In the aftermath of your appreciation for Across the Spider-Verse, will you now be going back in reverse chronological order for all of the animated films ever made just to reconsider?
Starting point is 01:24:57 I wouldn't want to spoil Spider-Verse by doing that. Would you watch just Shrek for me? Sure. Okay. And me. If that's the chip you want to cash in. And you? I think I like Shrek. I think I just Shrek for me? Sure. Okay. If that's the one,
Starting point is 01:25:06 if that's the chip you want to cash in. And you? I think I like Shrek. I think I like Shrek. Dude, I know. It's a fairy tale, but about how fairy tales can be inclusive. You're saying that you sound like a serial killer
Starting point is 01:25:21 when you said that. That was actually the funniest thing you've said you were doing like martha stewart hands as you were explaining with fucking shrek anyway today on the show we're going to be talking about fairy tales that are inclusive that's bobby that's what they gave you when you were five it's beautiful you know what they gave you when you were five. It's beautiful. You know what they gave me? Also a fucking bang up soundtrack is what they gave me. No, what they gave you was the woke mind virus. What's on track? I mean, All Star is definitely part of it, right?
Starting point is 01:25:59 It's like hit after hit. Hold on. Okay. Now you're going to have to read the hit after hit. Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah cover, I believe, is in that film right i believe i believe it was like a chart-topping hit yeah is there like a sad scene in shrek certainly yeah yeah he's an ogre you know he's coping with identity i was thinking about how he's been outcast no you don't you don't buy it yeah i like it when we got in midnight cowboy
Starting point is 01:26:23 not a fucking goblin No, you don't buy it? Yeah, I like it when that's in Midnight Cowboy. Not a fucking goblin. I'm a Believer, performed by Smash Mouth. Right, yeah. Bad Reputation, Joan Jett. All Star, also performed by Smash Mouth. A lot of Smash Mouth on here, guys. Yeah, Sean was right. Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright. And I'm a Believer, performed by Smash Mouth. A lot of Smash Mouth on here, guys. Yeah. Yeah, Sean was right. Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright.
Starting point is 01:26:46 And I'm a Believer. You already said that. Performed by Eddie Murphy. Okay. Performed by Eddie Murphy. Right. That is a crucial moment in the film. I gotta say, this sounds like one of the most cursed soundtracks of all time.
Starting point is 01:26:57 All right, I'm gonna keep going. Moment for me. Number four, Monsters, Inc. That little girl's very cute, even though she's animated. Never saw it. Monsters, Inc. is wonderful. Monsters, Inc. is little girl's very cute even though she's animated. Monsters Inc. is wonderful. Monsters Inc.
Starting point is 01:27:07 is actually wonderful. Wonderful movie. I think I put it on a plane once for Nux and he was just kind of like I need to
Starting point is 01:27:14 That will be one of his favorite movies of all time in the next two years. Rush Hour 2. The Mummy Returns. Pearl Harbor.
Starting point is 01:27:19 Let me tell you how much I cried when I went to see Pearl Harbor as a 16 year old. I did too but not for the same reason, unfortunately. I know. Because what did they do to my boy?
Starting point is 01:27:28 Yeah. They killed Michael Bay. I mean, I don't know what to say. I was just, I was 16 and I was like, this is so upsetting. Were you more of an Affleck or a Hartnett guy? I think at that time I was a Hartnett gal, you know, because I wasn't mature enough. You know who's cool? Josh Hartnett.
Starting point is 01:27:43 Is he? Yeah, in Operation Fortune. He's really good. Really good. Eight is Ocean's Eleven, which is not available to me, sadly. Nine is Jurassic Park 3. Sean and Chris,
Starting point is 01:27:52 what happens in Jurassic Park 3? This is when the dinosaurs are in San Diego, right? I thought that was two. No, that's Lost World. That's when William Macy and Tay Leoni go to to go find somebody's kid.
Starting point is 01:28:05 Right? Yes. Three is Julianne Moore. Uh-huh. And who's the male lead? Goldblum is back. Goldblum's back. Is Vince Vaughn in three?
Starting point is 01:28:18 Is Steve Zahn in three? I thought he was in The Lost World. Julianne Moore replaced someone irrepressible. I straight up don't remember yeah what are how will you respond isn't there a moment where like they're all running through san diego am i making that up the dinosaurs the dinosaurs there's a moment where like t-rex is at a gas station i do remember that do you remember that that was sick okay t-rex is like you're going to houston to get aererosmith tickets in the morning this film was not
Starting point is 01:28:45 directed by Steven Spielberg it was directed by Joe Johnston okay I'm not gonna be picking it so Planet of the Apes I don't even remember
Starting point is 01:28:51 which Planet of the Apes this is the Tim Burton Tim Burton it is an abomination okay 11 is a Beautiful Mind previously discussed
Starting point is 01:28:58 great memes 12 Hannibal 13 American wait wait wait do you know what happens in Hannibal no Ray Liotta gets his head
Starting point is 01:29:05 peeled back okay gross incredible shit and his they eat his brains yeah well I assumed that there was some sort
Starting point is 01:29:12 of eating of bodily matter Ridley Scott directed Hannibal listen I love Ridley not gonna pick it 13 American Pie 2 no 14
Starting point is 01:29:20 the original Fast and the Furious 15 how much pitch framing was going on during american 15 lara craft tomb lara croft tomb raider 16 dr little 2 17 spy kits shout out to my guy bobby wagner i don't know whether i'm gonna draft it though bobby because 18 blackhawk down has anyone ever listed 20 movies before picking a movie yes Yes, I did the time that I took Million Dollar Baby from you in the last round. You remember that? Because you were waiting for the Oscar. Because I had basically set up my entire
Starting point is 01:29:55 draft so that I could get that. 19, The Princess Diaries and 20, Vanilla Sky. You don't have anything to say about Black Hawk Down? Um, not really. A two movie year for Ridley. I love Ridley. I kind of thought you were going to take Black Hawk Down. I'm not. Okay. I love Black Hawk Down, but I won't be selecting it.
Starting point is 01:30:15 Sean's not even making eye contact, even though this is what you do. I'm fascinated. Well, when I do it, it's with an incredible efficiency. Okay. I am so interested to hear who you picked she's picking princess diaries of course i'm picking princess diaries we have to wait the entire time yeah we have to oh we had to wait no i just mean like i saw her at 19 and i was like oh yeah yeah um the introduction of anna hathaway the reintroduction
Starting point is 01:30:40 of the great julia andrews who i love very much who's written a lot of children's books i discovered recently and no one has given me one yet um this is a very charming film that's all i don't know what do you what did you want me to take i didn't want to take any of the other the stranger comes over to babysit they can if they bring a julie andrews children's book that will be their like the secret key okay it's like's like Fidelio. That's how I know. Oh yeah. Honestly, that seems great.
Starting point is 01:31:07 Okay. Just like, don't you think anyone who attends like a two 30 Friday afternoon showing of his girl Friday in my neighborhood is like probably trustworthy. No, you don't think so. No,
Starting point is 01:31:18 I think they're an unemployed degenerate. Okay. I stand with Chris. Honestly, it was a lot of college students who had never seen or college age students how many of them you think had gained 45 pounds in that year and then i don't think occidental they're they're fake those kids are fat yeah speaking of barack obama yeah he of occidental okay um i once again i gave my verdict on that yeah then there were also
Starting point is 01:31:43 a lot of people there solo drinking beers. And I was like, this is an incredible matchmaking opportunity. So you tried this one out. Yeah. You hosted a lovely party on Saturday. We had a nice time. Yeah, thanks so much. And you popped this one off right when I showed up at the party.
Starting point is 01:31:57 Yeah. You were like, there were a lot of dudes drinking beers alone at the movie theater. There was one. And it looked like there were some great opportunities for dating. Now, I want to say. Was there women there? I was really confused. theater. There was one. And it looked like there were some great opportunities for dating. Now, I want to say- Was there women there? I was really confused. Yeah, well, Chris, you don't need to, you know.
Starting point is 01:32:11 But were there, did it seem like romance was in the air? It seemed like there were a number of people there solo, drinking beer. But in the life cycle of the American cinephile, the man sitting alone at the movie theater in the middle of the day is usually not an eligible bachelor,
Starting point is 01:32:32 but Travis Bickle. Okay. So, you trying to match one of your friends up with a lonely dude? No, I'm just saying,
Starting point is 01:32:40 I think that there is something there on the table for vidiots and really all local red theaters. Matching a dating service? Or just like certain screenings, you know, like where there's... And would they encourage heavy petting at these screenings? Hot and heavy makeout sesh?
Starting point is 01:32:58 Perhaps a little over the shirt stuff? How... You're in a movie theater and two people are just going at it. Yeah. Is your first reaction how nice? No. How wonderful? I think it's kind of like.
Starting point is 01:33:10 Is it take it outside, guys? I just think that we've kind of like, that idea of like illicit humping, you know. Illicit humping? No, but like. What are you, the vice principal in 1989? The idea that you would need to go to like a mainstream film to cop a feel is weird. I see. It's weird.
Starting point is 01:33:30 Where else are teens supposed to go? Like their fucking cars. What if they don't have a car? They're priced out from that now. It's too expensive to go to the movies. Yeah, I know. Ovidius is a solid ticket. Yeah, also, matinee.
Starting point is 01:33:42 That's my argument. If I have to pay $17 and I get to pick my seat and then some guy's trying to get to third base behind me, like, that's not exactly going to keep Sinema's breathing,
Starting point is 01:33:52 you know what I mean? It'll keep him breathing, that's for sure. Maybe her as well. Or whoever, you know? Yeah, or anyone. Anyone who's getting
Starting point is 01:34:01 to third base. I love to get to third base what was like you want would you like me to explain it oh my god well you know what it was regional i found that it was regional was it now this is from all your trips to canada my girlfriend oh is that what you guys do I was on a rafting trip once. I'll bet you were. I'll bet you were. And you find out, like, from different guys.
Starting point is 01:34:39 What'd they tell you? Tell us. What'd they share? Third base is different. Third base is different. Yeah, sure is. Sure is. Do people still use the base system?
Starting point is 01:35:02 Bob is now 14. Why are you asking me? I'm almost 30. He's engaged to be married. So when you finally get to third base, you let us know. Call your friend in Toronto and say, I did it.
Starting point is 01:35:18 Guys. I made it. Standing triple. I don't even know. Is there a draft still going on? Did we make all of our picks? She listed 19 movies in Big Princess Diaries. Then you picked In the Mood for Love? Previous to that.
Starting point is 01:35:33 I just want to say, Amanda, your movies is like the used rack at a blockbuster right now. All the movies, they're all $3 at Target right now. Well, sorry that I was 16 in 2001. Teenage girls deserve cinema too. That's true. Okay.
Starting point is 01:35:50 That's true. So they can all swoon over Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen. Chris, you have a pick. I'm just going to pick Heist here. The David Mamet movie
Starting point is 01:35:59 with Gene Hackman and Delroy Lindo. There's a bunch of movies that we can shout out, but I rewatched Heist yesterday and it absolutely rocks. Your weight in Delroy Lindo. There's a bunch of movies that we can shout out, but I rewatched Heist yesterday. It absolutely rocks.
Starting point is 01:36:10 Your weight and your fate when Delroy Lindo says that when he's got a gun to someone's head, that's cinema to me. I'm like, I got tears streaming down my face right now. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 01:36:19 Heist. Do you think Delroy Lindo ever got to third base? I believe he permanently resides there. I would not be surprised Delroy Lindo ever got to third base? I believe he permanently resides there. I would not be surprised if Mamet has written a disquisition on
Starting point is 01:36:31 approaching third base. Sexual perversity in Chicago, you know? This is a guy who's got some familiarity with the ideas. Was this the last pick? That was your last pick and the last pick of this 2001 movie draft. I fucked up because I thought I was done that first time around when I picked Jay and Silent Bob.
Starting point is 01:36:47 But I actually don't mind my movies. There's a couple actually that I would really like to shout out though. Please do. Number one is Spy Game. Oh yeah. This was a backup for me. This is just a dynamite entertaining film with Colin Farrell and Robert Redford. Colin Farrell? No. Brad Pitt.
Starting point is 01:37:04 Sorry, Colin Farrell's in The Recruit. Brad Pitt and Rob Redford. Colin Farrell? No. Brad Pitt. No, Brad Pitt. Sorry, Colin Farrell's in The Recruit. Brad Pitt and Rob Redford. This was when Brad Pitt was playing Caddy to the screen legends of the time. Kind of like
Starting point is 01:37:13 what Cruise did with Color of Money kind of thing. Very much so. But he had also previously done The Devil's Own with Harrison Ford
Starting point is 01:37:20 in which Harrison Ford said he thought Brad Pitt was a silly person. That's very funny. What else? Other movies? I mean, there's a lot of very good films
Starting point is 01:37:30 that we haven't talked about here. The Others. It's a good movie. Eat You Mama, Tom Bien. Yeah, I really like that movie a lot. Me too. Cuaron. Cuaron doing like a 10-part TV show?
Starting point is 01:37:41 Is he? That's his next thing? Is it on Apple? Yeah. Okay. What the hell? There's like next thing. Is it on Apple? Yeah. Okay. What the hell? There's like literally eight people who are good
Starting point is 01:37:49 at making movies and he's one of them. Yeah, well. What the hell? Talk to Apple. Well, I mean, Apple's going to do it. They don't want to listen to me.
Starting point is 01:37:57 They got to have something to put in your headset, you know? The one I would like to go back and insert into my list is The Man Who Wasn't There. Terrific Coen Brothers movie.
Starting point is 01:38:06 One of the more slightly impenetrable Coen Brothers movies. Not a comedy, not a crime thriller per se. Kind of a sad noir. Yeah. A gentle, depressing film. Gorgeous. Deacons. Number of other films.
Starting point is 01:38:22 I mean, we mentioned Gosford Park park undrafted yeah gosford park was the the one i left on the board besides in the mood for love my favorite mirror is gosford yeah very good uh amelie do we have any amelie fans here it was very meaningful to me when i saw it was it in high school yeah um you know again i was 16 or 17 um i i grew old and did manic pixie dream girl discourse take this movie from us too maybe sort of um or maybe i just you know grew less patient over time and more jaded i saw it with my high school boyfriend it was very romantic evening also the movie theater where we saw it on on peach tree road uh next to the Fellinis has now been decimated and they're building condos. So there you go.
Starting point is 01:39:11 If I had one more pick, I would have taken In the Bedroom. Yeah. You got Todd. Todd Field's debut feature film, which is just a chilling movie. Saw it in theaters with my then-girlfriend, now wife, and we were both just distraught. When you said then-girlfriend, for a second, my heart skipped a beat. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:30 My then-girlfriend, Angela Merkel. We broke up right after we saw the film. Tara Reade. There's a lot more. We mentioned Black Hawk Down, unselected. Mentioned Hannibal, unselected. Joyride. Joyride, unselected uh did I say Donnie
Starting point is 01:39:47 Darko you didn't you didn't you didn't say that you didn't say waking life I think if I had watched Donnie Darko before this draft I probably would have taken it because I have a kind of predictable relationship to that movie as a guy who was in college when it came out which is to say i thought it was fascinating and maybe not coherent but quite interesting and the direction that richard kelly's career or lack thereof has taken has always been interesting to me what's up what's up with him now what's he doing i don't think he has anything going it was the last movie he did the box i believe it is i mean do you like the Mexican? Not really. No. I was wondering if there are any cult classics from this year.
Starting point is 01:40:28 I think a big one is Baby Boy. Yeah. The John Singleton film. Yeah, yeah. Which is a TNT all-star now, but is a really, really good movie. And what happened to that Tyrese is my question. Why is Tyrese just the punchline in the Fast and the Furious movies instead of the guy from Baby Boy?
Starting point is 01:40:43 I don't understand. Taraji is fucking amazing about Baby Boy. Gosh, I mean, what else? Down to Earth? The Chris Rock joint? Oh, yeah. Were you a fan of that? Who directed that?
Starting point is 01:40:55 The Weitz brothers. Right. What about Freddy Got Fingered? And Pootie Tang was this year. Pootie Tang, yeah. That's your favorite filmmaker. When A.O. Scott bid farewell to his post as the film critic, one of the film critics of New York Times, he cited Freddie Got Fingered a number of times in both his farewell piece
Starting point is 01:41:15 and in his episode of The Daily where he spoke about his career. Have you seen Freddie Got Fingered? I have not. Do you remember Tom Green's fame? I do because he was married to Drew Barrymore. Did you watch the Tom Green show? I think I watched clips. Wasn't Drew on it at some point? Maybe at one point. Yeah. I watched every episode. Okay. I thought it was quite funny. Did you watch it? No. Why? I think because I was living in New York City in 2001 and I wasn't really watching MTV at that you watch it? No. Why? I think because I was living in New York City in 2001,
Starting point is 01:41:45 and I wasn't really watching MTV at that point. Interesting. Yeah. You'd gotten too cool for MTV. I didn't get too cool for it, but I don't even know if I had cable in 2001. What about John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars? I cited that film two minutes ago,
Starting point is 01:42:01 and it's a powerful film to me. How so? In some ways, it is... I guess it's a powerful film to me. How so? In some ways, it is, I guess it's like my Shrek. It's inclusive, you know, because it's Ice Cube and Natasha Henstridge
Starting point is 01:42:12 are in this movie. Really? The totality of humanity right there. Also, Pam Grier. This movie cranks. It's so good. Is it?
Starting point is 01:42:23 Yeah. I actually re-watched it. I know people hate it. I don't hate it, but it does not crank, in my opinion. I think it's a really good idea for a movie, too. I'll go with you on that. Do you remember this? Remember after she dated, or was married
Starting point is 01:42:35 to Tom Green? Drew Barrymore? You just missed the whole Ghost of Mars thing. I know, because I was just Googling Drew Barrymore for Pizzo Moretti. This was awesome. That was an amazing time. Damn it, Niagara. Yeah. So good.
Starting point is 01:42:49 Josie and the Pussycats. Have you seen it? I haven't seen that, but I saw a video on YouTube of Rachel Lee Cook being like, Josie and the Pussycats lives on. People still come up to me. She did. She's right.
Starting point is 01:43:02 It does. It's a world-class movie. It's been saved as a cult object. I just like that. I saw a video on YouTube. Yeah, he was looking for, you know, material for pitch framing. Just banging Rachel E. Cook into the search bar. Open something fun comes up.
Starting point is 01:43:18 What else? A Night's Tale. Waking Life and Tape for this year. The Linklater double. A double from Linklater. A double from Ridley. Interesting stuff. What else?
Starting point is 01:43:28 The Majestic. Frank Darabont's vehicle starring Jim Carrey. Was this the Truman Show follow-up? I think it was. Not Another Teen Movie. Do you know who starred in that film? I don't remember. Chris Evans. Oh, really?
Starting point is 01:43:43 That was kind of his big break. Yeah. Let's go on down the line here. Original Sin starring Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. Quite a sexy film
Starting point is 01:43:53 is our call. We'll be doing a 10-part pod series about that movie. Was that not in your most romantic movies pod? We had to cut that part out. It's too much talk
Starting point is 01:44:01 about third base. What about the score? Is that the De Niro movie? Yeah. Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, and Edward Norton. Directed by Frank Oz. Oh, yeah. I rewatched part of it for De Niro movies, and I was like, eh.
Starting point is 01:44:16 Do you know what people love from this year? A Knight's Tale. Oh, yeah. Heath. Yeah. Heath Ledger. Is that actually a good movie? I don't know, but it's a really good Bettany.
Starting point is 01:44:24 Have you considered Bella Tarr's Wreckmeister Harmonies? Have I considered it? Was I considering it for my draft? It was not on my big board. It was kind of like
Starting point is 01:44:33 the Brock Purdy of my big board. What else? Anything else, Amanda? No, I mean, I was in high school, you know? I had a lot of homework.
Starting point is 01:44:42 I did all of it. There was a... Sean Penn's The Pledge? What? Something very funny just happened around that. Nothing funny ever happens around films
Starting point is 01:44:53 that Sean Penn directs. No, I think what happened was that they needed to ADR a line for Jack Nicholson at the end of that film and he was unavailable so Phil Hartman did it.
Starting point is 01:45:03 Oh, wow. And he did a pitch-perfect Jack Nicholson to fill in for the... Oh, that Hartman did it and he did a pitch perfect Jack Nicholson to fill in for the I think that's what happened was Nicholson just like watching a Lakers Spurs series or something
Starting point is 01:45:10 it might have not been the Pledge it might have been a preview an earlier film might have been The Border is that possible Engine Runner maybe I can't remember one movie that I
Starting point is 01:45:18 I thought you might be interested in which was not released theatrically it was an HBO original film Amanda was Wit which is a Mike Nichols movie starring Emma Thompson. Oh, that's right. You know, I've never seen this. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:45:30 Even though those are two of my people. It's been on the list, but I think because of its weird... I mean, is it available to stream? Let's look. It could be. Wit, Mike Nichols streaming. The writers of this movie are Mike Nichols and Emma Thompson. I mean, I love both of those people. It appears to be on Huluula maybe i'll watch it tonight or it's on oh it's on it's
Starting point is 01:45:49 on max it's on max so it says it's a max original as i recall what about the wedding planner good not pantheon for me okay can i ask you guys about one of the movies that you haven't mentioned yet yeah what about moulin what about moulin rouge oh think I've ever heard any of you talk about that. Yeah. Listen, once again, I was a teenager in 2001. Never saw it. We have to honor teenagers. I quite openly dislike this film. Okay.
Starting point is 01:46:17 And feel that it is stupid. That's my official opinion. To quote my father, you have to respect any movie. Well, you don't have to, but I think... I was going to say, I'm getting ready to disrespect it. I know, but I think you should find a way to experience life that you can find some sort of respect for any movie that builds its climax to Roxanne by the police. Oh, see, I thought he was giving you a life lesson
Starting point is 01:46:40 that you had disregarded because you're disrespecting the hobbits, but it didn't have Roxanne. So if if they had climaxed fellowship of the ring with roxanne perhaps it would have been it is jet it is really funny it's a tango in moulin rouge and when he's just like roxanne it's funny who is the male star of this movie ewan mcgregor that's right listen cool again the star wars thing and if you can't make star wars work is james star of this movie? Ewan McGregor. That's right. Listen. Cool? Again, the Star Wars thing. And if you can't make Star Wars work. Is James McAvoy cool?
Starting point is 01:47:12 I don't know. I like James McAvoy a lot. Why did he... Just Scottish people? I'm just running through anybody I can think of. Honestly. Baz Luhrmann?
Starting point is 01:47:26 I don't know whether Baz Luhrmann's cool, but I appreciate his vision of the world. Also, listen, you have not been a teenage girl until you've driven down the street blasting like Elephant Love Song or whatever from Moulin Rouge, you know? Like we've all been there. You have to be 16 once. So you don't know.
Starting point is 01:47:47 You haven't had that experience. I have. William Howard Taft. Is he cool? I don't think so because you have to get away with your crimes to be cool. I see. Oh, so Trump's cool. We'll see.
Starting point is 01:48:00 It's starting soon. Well, much like Trump, we're either going to jail for this pod or we're going to be the president of movie podcasting. I think this pod was good. I don't think I did a good job in the draft. Oh, yeah. We have to recap. Let's recap our titles then. Amanda, why don't you start us off?
Starting point is 01:48:15 What are the films that you acquired? Sure. In drama, I have The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson. In comedy, I have Legally Blonde. In action horror thriller, I have... Chris, would you like to share my pick? Training time. Yeah. In blockbuster, I have Theally Blonde. In Action Horror Thriller, I have... Chris, would you like to share my pick? Training time. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:48:26 In Blockbuster, I have The Princess Diaries. In Oscar nominee, I have Bridget Jones's Diary. And in Wildcard, I have Zoolander. Chris Ryan. In drama, I have Memento. In comedy, I have Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In Action Horror Thriller, I have David Mamet's Heist. In Blockbuster, I have Ocean's Eleven. In Oscar nominee, I have Sexy Beast. And in Wild thriller. I have David Mamet's heist in blockbuster.
Starting point is 01:48:45 I have oceans 11 and Oscar nominee. I have sexy beast in a wild card. I have Ali. I'll read my films. What a weird fucking gaggle of movies. That is in drama. I have Mulholland drive in comedy. I have wet hot American summer in action horror thriller.
Starting point is 01:48:59 I have vanilla sky in blockbuster. I have Lord of the Rings, the fellowship of the ring in Oscar nominee. I have Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring. In Oscar nominee, I have AI, Artificial Intelligence. And in wild card, I have In the Mood for Love. Once again,
Starting point is 01:49:12 I've won. Thanks so much to everybody. if we actually put the poll. I mean, I'm a woman of the people, you know? Yeah. What does that mean?
Starting point is 01:49:19 What just? You have the Princess Diaries. Yeah. And that's because it was eligible for Blockbuster because people liked it. Bobby, Princess Diaries, yay or nay Diaries. Yeah. And that's because it was eligible for Blockbuster because people liked it. Bobby, Princess Diaries. Yay or nay?
Starting point is 01:49:28 Pro. Pro. See, this is what I'm saying. I have the youth vote. Bobby was just touting the soundtrack of the film Shrek. Well, I didn't select Shrek. You're going to get a lot of opinions or not to be trusted. She didn't say she was cool.
Starting point is 01:49:39 She said she was a person of the people. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you have all of your victories in the past to certify that. You know? You know what's not cool is a all of your victories in the past to certify that. You know? You know what's not cool is a bunch of nerds on the internet
Starting point is 01:49:48 clicking a button with your name next to it. How many certificates do you have certifying your coolness? How many certificates do you have? Several.
Starting point is 01:49:54 You can find them in Twitter polls around the nation. My thanks. Well, this was interesting. So, 2001 was a big one. We were holding this for a long time.
Starting point is 01:50:06 Do you think we were? We did it justice? I don't. I think this was quite erratic and strange. This was a big one? Well, there's only a handful of years that we have not covered in the last 30 years that are left on the board at the moment. I want to say there are only about five since 1992 or 1991.
Starting point is 01:50:26 So should we do more De Niro's? I think we definitely need to mix up some themes. I think we also, Bobby, I think might have suggested to us that we redo 2010 at some point because the show has changed quite significantly since we had a first movie draft. Is there anything that you guys would like to do draft-wise
Starting point is 01:50:44 in the near future? Maybe a Princess Diaries draft? I would like to resubmit my legal courtroom movies draft. I like that. Would you like to do that next? Sure. Do we have a legal film coming up?
Starting point is 01:50:59 I'm not sure. I'm thinking. The next thing like this that we do will be the halfway point movie auction what does that mean well we do two movie auctions a year so we will look at the remaining okay got it okay movie you said movie auction not movie draft i stopped listening to you i'm sorry the auction um okay so then and the literally the your only job the only thing you have to do is listen to me on a podcast
Starting point is 01:51:25 I have to see movies too it's no it's okay I took I this is like a genetic thing I took my son to music class yesterday and I noticed that he just kind of like stared off and like into the distance I find you to be relatively and then would check back in you know and be like yeah so that's so you're actually not listening to us when we talk. I mean, sometimes I'm Googling pictures of Drew Barrymore and her old boyfriends, but sometimes I listen to you. I keep you guessing, you know? You never know what I'm going to remember and what I'm not. Never missed a word you've said.
Starting point is 01:51:54 I've listened to every episode of The Watch. Thanks, man. Every single episode. I've listened to zero episodes of the Philly Special, though. Just want to point that out. I know. Literally never heard the show. I've been working at this company since it started.
Starting point is 01:52:04 What would you do if they were like, God, did you hear Chris was really making fun of the forest fires in Nova Scotia on Philly Special? Would you be surprised? I feel like that's a shame. Juliet, you got to handle that. Yeah. Okay. Well, we'll figure out a time to do legal thrillers.
Starting point is 01:52:19 The challenge is that August is... We're more or less off in August. That's okay. We're allowed to take time off. Yeah. Yeah. Not all of the month, but most of the month. The one other thing that I wanted to do was that I wanted to do the winner's draft.
Starting point is 01:52:34 Yes. That was my other suggestion. Yeah. What's the winner's draft? Drafting from films that we've drafted previously. But only people who won the polls would those films be or would every film that's ever been drafted be eligible what what are you talking about that would mean like we're only picking movies we're not only picking your movies you
Starting point is 01:52:54 psycho what's wrong with you what kind of what what is your wrong with your brain that that's what you heard when i said winner's draft I didn't say. Which is like all my movies. Chris has won some polls. Everything that Twitter agreed upon. You've won a couple of times. What? No. All the movies that have been drafted. But those aren't winners.
Starting point is 01:53:10 I'm talking about there's a winner at the end of these drafts. They're the winners of the, they were drafted as opposed to all the films that weren't drafted. So you just see a film being drafted. This is the participation trophy culture that you're going to raise your son in. Shame on you. Shame on you. Shame on you. What about standards? We used to be a country.
Starting point is 01:53:29 It's just that we might as well rename it just like the Marvel draft. Or the Sean draft. Like cool. Sean draft sounds good. Okay, let's do Sean draft, Amanda draft, Chris draft. Oh, that's a good idea. And that's really fun.
Starting point is 01:53:41 And we, I don't know how. Yours will be so chaotic. My movies? Yours will be the best one first overall Iron Man 3 I feel like this this draft today
Starting point is 01:53:48 was harkened back to my early days of drafting where you you had some misses yeah just where I was just a little bit more
Starting point is 01:53:55 you know you feel like you've since locked it down strategically yeah I had a run there of dominance well Chris
Starting point is 01:54:02 thank you very much it's always a pleasure to come on the big picture what am I next on what am I doing Harrison Ford I believe yes the Harrison Ford
Starting point is 01:54:09 Hall of Fame how do you feel about that I love it are you ready for that I can't wait to talk about fucking incredibly excited I have a couple
Starting point is 01:54:15 Zach's out of town this weekend and Witness is on my rewatch list can't wait yeah I have some homework as well Bobby Wagner
Starting point is 01:54:23 thanks for your work on this episode as the producer. Always my pleasure. My submission is the third base draft. The best third basemen. Brooks Robinson. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:35 CR. David Wright. Later this week on the podcast, we're talking about The Flash. Yeah. Van Lathan's coming on the show. Okay. It's a film.
Starting point is 01:54:46 Is that your early review? Yes. Amanda's sighs are embargoed until Friday. How did they manage to get out that this is the best movie since Dark Knight?
Starting point is 01:54:57 How did they manage to create that narrative? They said it publicly. And do you think that turned out to be a bad idea? Because if it had not been, oh, this is the best movie since Dark Knight,
Starting point is 01:55:08 best superhero movie since Dark Knight. Chris, you are infringing upon the subject of this week's episode. We are going to get into that very question when we talk about the film. Thanks very much, Greenberg. We'll see you Friday.
