Starting point is 00:00:00 This episode of the big picture is presented by Starbucks. The unofficial drink of summer is here and it's just as good as I remembered. Starbucks summer berry refresher is everything you'd want from a summer beverage, a blend of berry notes shaken with ice and poured over a layer of new raspberry flavored pearls. And personally, my favorite refresher is the summer berry lemonade. It just tastes like summer in a cup and adds a whole other level of fresh flavors. We are on the brink of a major heat wave here in a cup and adds a whole other level of fresh flavors. We are on the brink of a major heat wave here in Los Angeles and nothing would be more refreshing than a Starbucks summer berry lemonade refresher.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Available for a limited time only, your summer berry refresher is ready at Starbucks. I'm Sean Fennessy. I'm Amanda Dobbins. And this is the Big Picture, a conversation show about auctioning. It is the midway point of the year. And so we are auctioning once again to fill out our slates, which means Chris Ryan's here. Hi, Chris. How are you? Nice to see you guys.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Nice to see you. Chris, last time I saw you, we were-in-arm watching the wild bunch on 70 millimeter What an experience? It was a magical night me you Tyler Parker 300 other very normal men experiencing cinema together any takeaways from that night out? I just can't believe how alive and well the spirit of movies is in Hollywood. There was also a Trump rally I think in Hollywood. Yes, right. Did you organize it? Weirdly made it out to the movie. There was also a Trump rally, I think, in Hollywood. Yes, right. Which you organized and weirdly made it out to the movie. That was so strange.
Starting point is 00:01:28 They just needed me for pre-pro. Amanda, how are you? How was your weekend? Did you go to the Trump rally? It was lovely. No. OK. I went to the beach.
Starting point is 00:01:36 All right. And I had a great time. And now I'm back here sitting between the two of you. I can't tell. Are you getting tired of us? I was excited to of you. I can't tell. Are you getting tired of us? I was excited to see you. And then he got a little spicy about the box office.
Starting point is 00:01:50 And then you guys were doing your Wild Bunch, which sounds really nice. But you know. The 70 millimeter festival is one of the great things that happens in this city. It is. It's really cool. It was opening weekend and we've all got tickets for various films throughout the month, which will be exciting. Wild Bunch holds up. It's definitely a movie about men not knowing how to be around each other and alive and constantly making choices about the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:02:21 So you know, resident in these times. Unfortunately, another man who's not alive. Also, just really, Jesus Christ. That was a segue. See, this is- You can't get in the way of a segue like that. I'll do a better segue. Okay. A guy who wouldn't have been a stranger in a Sam Peck and Paul movie. How about that?
Starting point is 00:02:37 That's right. Michael Madsen, the great Michael Madsen would have fit right in. He passed away at 67 on July 3rd. Tragically, you know, star of probably most memorably for us for Quentin Tarantino films. I think most of us probably saw him for the first time as Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs. He was also in both Kill Bill movies. He was in The Hateful Eight. Actually going through his filmography,
Starting point is 00:02:59 kind of blown away by the depth of work that he did in the 90s and 2000s. He really was in from The Doors to The Natural to Kill Me Again, Donnie Brasco, Free Willy. I was going to say, don't you dare skip Free Willy. Yeah, I mean Wyatt Earp. Stalman, Louise, right? Yeah, a ton of movies over the years.
Starting point is 00:03:15 A linchpin, often identified as a tough guy, but I always thought more of like your cool nihilist, you know, the anything goes kind of character. Pretty quirky. Very strange presence, yes. Yeah. Let's cut the rug. We'll dance, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:28 He inspired a lot of your dance moves. Yeah. You know, he's been working mostly in independent and VOD stuff in the last 15, 20 years, but just one of my favorite people to see pop up in a movie. And also one of the stars of your favorite movie, Species.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Sure, yes. Which is about an alien woman who comes to this planet and murders her prey. It's apparently gonna be rewatchable. So I've heard. We'll see using that. That's exciting. I haven't been drafted yet, but I'm waiting
Starting point is 00:03:59 for the Bat Signal to go up. Okay. Speaking of Bat Signals, you guys saluted to a dino-shaped shadow in the sky called Jurassic World Rebirth. It opened this weekend to 147 million dollars domestically. How are you feeling? I feel good, but I think the other underlying story here is Scarlett
Starting point is 00:04:18 Johansson is our most successful movie star now. Yeah. Well, she... The Avengers are counting towards that total, right? So she's just racking up franchises at this point. Yeah. I think that, honestly, when you look at the list of people who are the most successful actors of all time, it's usually because they've been a part of a really long-running franchise.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Samuel L. Jackson for a while was, I think, the reigning box office king. Vin Diesel probably cakes up. Definitely. Um... So it's not stunning, but another savvy career move by Scar Joe staying in the news. Anything you want to say to the people or to the dinosaurs? Have you thought about whether or not you were too hard on that movie? No, it's terrible. Direct to camera to Gareth Edwards. Gareth, you're a very talented crafts person. Your scripts are terrible. I don't know what to tell you, man.
Starting point is 00:05:06 It's like five movies in a row. The box office has just been killing it though for three months. Like movies, I had my little emotional break in March where I was like, God, TV, White Lotus, and all these other limited series. And then ever since then, I spoke it out of existence. It's just the movie time. CRU hosted television podcast. How's that going?
Starting point is 00:05:28 It's going fine. Today we talked about the Eternote, an Argentine, uh, Argentinian show of the bout about the end of the world or about a depocalyptic event. And then we also talked about smoke, which is Dennis Lahane's Apple TV show, which Andy hated and I thought was fine. Okay. Interesting. Okay. Interesting. Yeah. I keep finding myself on the other side of like a very passionate argument
Starting point is 00:05:50 that I don't have a ton of passion for. Okay. You know? Yeah. This reminds me that I need your Brit box password so I can watch the show about the Midfords. There's another show about the Midfords? I don't think there's ever actually been a show about them. But Amanda is constantly creating the content around them. Yeah. I think there's ever actually been a show about them. Amanda is constantly creating content around them.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm surprised you didn't create that show. Obviously many people have been, many characters have been modeled on them throughout time, including perhaps one movie that one of us will auction in the fall. Zora Bennett from Jurassic World Rebirth has got a little bit of a Midford tour.
Starting point is 00:06:22 There was, you know, there was some mercenary quality to at least one of them. That is true. Any thoughts on Jurassic World? It actually kind of like underperformed relative to the franchise? Yeah, yeah, sure, yeah. Do you know what the three-day weekend box office was
Starting point is 00:06:37 for this movie? $147 million domestically? No, that was the five-day weekend. That was what your dollars from Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. went to. That's true. The three-day weekend was 91. Oh, wow, what c weekend. That was what your dollars from Wednesday morning at 8AM went to. The three-day weekend was 91. Oh, wow, what cucks. That's pretty low, actually,
Starting point is 00:06:49 relative to the typical three-day weekend for a Jurassic movie. And you think Suits is coming along to bust it out? I don't know. What else did you do this weekend that has given us this mind state? What do you mean? He seems okay. Okay, yeah. I'm just, I'm still confused by you guys being like,
Starting point is 00:07:06 we need more of these Jurassic World movies. Do you know what though? I rarely do this, but I will remember you said that. A, the next time you like a bad movie, and B, if next year you're like, and of course Jurassic World, which I thought was a really thoughtful depiction. Because I think you count on me not checking the tape,
Starting point is 00:07:26 but this one's singed. I'm going to remember this. All right, fair enough. If I do that, you have the privilege to shoot me in the face, live on the pod. And I promise Eileen will not press charges. Great. Should we talk about the movie auction?
Starting point is 00:07:42 Absolutely. You have some updates. Well, we can go through our slate, but, you know, a gentleman named Sam Birtwistle's been working on the show for us this summer. He's been helping us build out our documents, provide research, and he made a proposition about the scoring system that we have for the movie auction. Now, the movie auction, I will admit,
Starting point is 00:08:01 is one of my least thought-out projects in the history of this show. Right. We kind of, I came up with it thought out projects in the history of this show. Right. We kinda, I came up with it like on a Sunday at 9 p.m. before a Monday record and was just like, guys, can we do this? Yeah. And you said yes. I had no parameters for success.
Starting point is 00:08:14 We didn't properly track it across the year. There were no stakes whatsoever. A year ago, I added some wrinkles to the rules, which I admit- A year ago or six months ago? I think it was for 2024. So, the triggers. Yeah, it was the second one of 2024, I believe.
Starting point is 00:08:32 The triggers were added at the beginning of 2024, which included Metacritic score and box office. Yeah. And Oscar nominations as indicators of a strong slate of auctioned off movies. Right. Again, not some of my best work. So Sam. But I think these pods are some of our best work.
Starting point is 00:08:50 I do. I think they're some of our most thoughtful discussions of the state of cinema. I'll take your word for that. We go new places. We learn new things about each other in the world. You know? Yeah, that may be true. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:01 I don't want to upset that. Yeah. Let me just, I don't want to spoil this auction, but I am bringing like an original auction energy to my personal list and prep for this podcast. That means that I looked at the letterbox list 20 minutes ago. Okay. But that's okay.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Okay. Because I did read the new rules, but there are new rules. If we want to employ them. Adapt this, yeah. So I'll just read them out to you guys, and you can let me know if you're interested in adapting. I don't know if we're going to get it past the Freedom Caucus. Yeah, well, excuse me.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Yeah, major Marjorie Taylor Greene energy this morning. Fuck both of you. And fuck Marjorie Taylor Greene. So this would be the new proposed scoring. Rather than just having triggers like we had in the past, where if you crossed $100 million domestically, that indicates you're cleared and your board is valid. We could have more of a tiered system.
Starting point is 00:09:48 So $150 million at the box office would be one point, 300 million would be one point, 450 million would be one point, so on and so forth. Likewise for Metacritic. 79 on Metacritic would be one point, 82 on Metacritic would be one point, 85 would be one point. And then the highest in the draft, Metacritic wise, would also get an additional point. Now I set an 85 Metacritic bar last year,
Starting point is 00:10:12 which is pretty high. There's usually only roughly 10 to 12 movies that cross that threshold, and nine of them are films that most people will not see. And then of course there's Oscars. So there's Below the Line, Nominations and Wins, which could be- Only half a point. Not then of course there's Oscars. So there's below the line nominations and wins, which could be... Only half a point. Not very respectful to our craftspeople.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Yeah. I think we can also massage anything that Sam has suggested here. Above the line would be one point, and a best picture winner would also be one point. So, thoughts on this framework? I like it. I also think that there would be, my revision to this would be like, should we get a Tony
Starting point is 00:10:47 Reali esque kind of like live scoring going to like just to mix it up, you know, where a guy is just like 10 points. That's a great that's a great idea. You know, like do you want Jack Sanders to be scoring
Starting point is 00:10:59 us in real time? I mean, that is something that we probably could have a revolving cast of Tony Reales. Okay. You know? You mean you want to have like a guest come in mid-auction and determine... You know, when we first started doing the auction, we had Danny Hyffetz come in and explain auctioning.
Starting point is 00:11:14 That's right. Because I was quite... I was very nervous about auctioning. Right. And Ringer Fantasy Football co-host and participant in many fantasy drafts over the years. This is sort of our version of the fantasy draft. So we could do that in the future. We're not doing it today. So we didn't ask anybody. As a resource, Sam went through and graded out
Starting point is 00:11:32 our 2024 slates with these rules, if applied. And the results, which I acknowledge mean nothing because we weren't using these rules. Because I'm winning. So that's, of course, you've acknowledged that you're not the last year. Well, the scores are from last year. Last year's, yeah. Well, the scores are from last year
Starting point is 00:11:46 because of that attitude that you're suggesting to me are that I would have had 38 points, Chris, you would have had 13.5, and Amanda would have had 10. Now, obviously, that's meaningless relative to what we're talking about here, but do you wanna do this? Do you wanna use this system?
Starting point is 00:11:59 Sure, yeah. You're rolling with it this morning. I'm rolling with it. I don't think anything will materially change for me. In terms of what you're going for. Yeah, you know, because we introduced... I guess we had some thresholds last summer, but I don't remember that.
Starting point is 00:12:17 There was some sequel stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But we really got into it in January. And this strategy, just kind of trying to think in strategy, really threw me off in January, and this strategy, just kinda trying to think in strategy really threw me off my course, which is doing what's best for me. And not giving a shit about what anybody else thinks has brought me this far. Where would you say that is?
Starting point is 00:12:39 Right here. I was just like... Dealing with you on a Monday morning. That's what I'm saying. Did you get where you wanted to go? That's true, but it's like, you know. A prison of your own design. Right, exactly. I don't run a studio,
Starting point is 00:12:50 so I don't really have to care about box office. I don't really respect other people's opinions, so I don't need to care about Metacritic. So I think it's good. There was a lot of numbers that you just said, so I'm happy that Sam is doing the math and not me. Um, I don't know who you just referenced is or how that would function. Tony?
Starting point is 00:13:14 Uh, Tony Reali, he was the host of Around the Horn, which is like part of the interruption around the horn, the afternoon block on ESPN. And like, you know, people would have a take and he would be like constantly giving them points or taking away points depending on like what he thought of their takes. Whether their opinion was interesting. Oh, so it would be like live in the episode if you just be like, I mean, I do think we should have like more like buttons and interactive. You want to be able to press them. Yeah, exactly. So I think that's a good idea. I'm going with it.
Starting point is 00:13:42 I thought there was a version of this estimate where I was winning something. So you're doing okay this year. You are doing well this year. But I thought I was winning. Just kidding. It's July 7th. A lot of ball game left here. Let's go through our slates from last year, because that will help illuminate what Amanda is saying.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Last year? Or from last option. Last draft. Okay. So you go first. Yeah, so what did you get last year and where does it, or last season and where does it stand? Well, let's see. Uh, the first one I have is Megan 2.0,
Starting point is 00:14:19 which was just, you know, a disaster. I, like, did I fuck up? Did they fuck up? Who can really say? You should go on the town and talk about it. I should. I mean, you had to. Another postmortem of Megan 2.0? I thought that Jason Blum was very, very savvy to go on the town,
Starting point is 00:14:36 and I listened to all of it and enjoyed it. It didn't speak to my personal complaints with the film, Megan 2.0, which you and I both saw. We did. That didn't really pan out. No, I think they overthought what they... I think that Jason was right about the fact that... Megan was not as flexible and fungible a character as they had hoped, and that the idea of, like,
Starting point is 00:15:01 pivoting this into a sci-fi action movie away from horror. I didn't even know they had done that, though. That there's something... To me, there's something else. There are a number of other factors going on. I didn't even know they had done that though. That there's something... To me, there's something else. There are a number of other factors going on. I think the movie ultimately is just not as strong as the first movie. It's not as funny.
Starting point is 00:15:13 It's not as energetic and propulsive. And then on top of that... It was a little funny though. That is the... There's some humor. I still chuckled. It's the same filmmaker from the first film. Yeah, it's just doing... It's doing too much and it's trying to...
Starting point is 00:15:25 There is an opening set piece in like some, you know, weapon system silo in an undisclosed location that has nothing to do with Megan, and you're just kind of like, what's going on? It is actually pretty CR coded. Yeah, in that sense... Is Megan a lioness? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:42 There is, the villain, the T-1000 of the movie, is a kind of lioness. Okay. Yeah. And I think you would be sexually attracted to her. Well, part of the reason why lioness is such an effective story is you also get a sense of their home life. They're not robots, you know? Right. I'm sure that's true of lioness.
Starting point is 00:16:00 I think the other thing with the movie is they release it in the middle of June, which Jason noted, which is like a weird release date. And it's two hours long. And movies like that should always be 95 minutes. That made no sense to me. And two hours long. True. I agree with all of what you said. And then as Matt sort of pointed out, on the town,
Starting point is 00:16:16 they did not have like the massive viral marketing moment that propelled Megan 1.0. And it's just, I mean, you can't control it. You can't fault anyone for not having that, but that was the dancing and the TikTok of it all certainly played a part in getting people to theaters. I think they were also obviously just competing with a lot more movies for that viral mind share in June.
Starting point is 00:16:40 It's just like, How to Train Your Dragon was a massive movie that the same studio put out. There's only so much kind of interest you can gin up. It's a dump-uary movie. It's like a perfect dump-uary movie. The first one absolutely was. It was like, it was, uh... It was Water in the Desert in the January release late, a year and a half ago. So anyway, the movie didn't work so that didn't help you very much. So yeah, and I was banking on that from a box office perspective. Didn't really work.
Starting point is 00:17:02 But I did get F1, which I think is gonna help me with box office and also hopefully technical categories. Though once again, I do think that it's disrespectful that it only gets.5. There's an exceedingly high chance it will be nominated, at least for best sound. Yeah. Maybe best editing? Cinematography?
Starting point is 00:17:23 Yeah. Claudio Morandi, I believe, was nominated for Top Gun Maverick. Yeah. So I could see that. Um, see? So listen, we could, we could set some up. Okay, I got Opus, which is a sentimental favorite. So that's fine with me. Phoenician Scheme, which is another one of my favorite movies of the year.
Starting point is 00:17:39 So I feel good about that. I think, you know, once again, the critics are not helping me with the Metacritic score and I don't respect them and they don't respect me, apparently, or Wes Anderson. Maybe Oscars, but you know. Do you think at the Critics' Choice they have an Amanda meeting? About disrespecting you. Well, I will be honest, I don't really respect the Critics' Choice. The Oscars, you know, also don't really respect Wes Anderson, so that seems...
Starting point is 00:18:09 But it's fine. I have it because I like it. And then Marty Supreme hasn't been released yet. And to me, we pray. At the moment, you've got one total point relative to this new scoring system because F1 is likely to cross $150 million domestically. F1 doing pretty well. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Not amazingly well at the box office, but well enough, I think. Yeah. Chris, let's talk about your slate. I had Sinners, which got two points for its Metacritic score and one point for its $278 million box office. I guess that's domestic, right?
Starting point is 00:18:43 Domestic, yeah. I took Jurassic World Rebirth where I got one point. We'll certainly clear the box office threshold. Might get to two. Might get over 300. And then highest to lowest, sentimental value and Running Man are my other three picks. Not to be released yet. Yet to be released.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Highest low, seeing it tonight. Very excited. Oh yeah. Very excited. Are you really? Yeah. Yeah, he's going with my husband I'm very excited for you guys. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Um Okay, so Chris you've got four points right now, I think I think you also have probably another winfall coming on centers in terms of nominations that will turn out to be
Starting point is 00:19:21 Probably the pick of the year. Yeah, I would guess Congratulations, Chris. Thanks. Well done, Ciara. For me, I've got Mission Impossible Final Reckoning, which I just didn't really like very much, unfortunately for me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:35 And that did get me- Chris hated it more. He did. Would you like to say any more rude things? I think I'm on record on the Watch Podcast, which I hope people carve out a little bit of time Like a nonprofit, you know The Oasis record standing on the shoulder of Giants shoulder, yeah
Starting point is 00:20:04 You are the shoulders you're that you're the wind beneath my wings, honestly. That movie has gained $191 million at the box office, so that's one point. It's not getting past there. Sixty-seven on Metacritic, not ideal, but roughly... Honestly higher than... Pretty much where it sits, yeah. The idea that the Phoenicians game is 70 and this movie is 67 is pretty goofy, in my opinion. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Twenty-eight years later, a movie that I think I'm gonna get no points from, but I feel good about having on my slate. You definitely should. I loved. Seventy-seven Metacritic score, 28 years later, a movie that I think I'm gonna get no points from, but I feel good about having it on my slate. I loved. 77 Metacritic score, $60 million box office domestically. Still some open question as to whether there will be a third movie in that franchise, The Bone Temple, arrives in January. I think that January release will be good for The Bone Temple. Could be a Megan situation.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Well, I just think it's a great time to be like, here's an action horror movie. Totally agree. Granted, not Danny Boyle, but we'll see. A Big Bull Beautiful Journey is still to come in September. Have not seen it. Can't say I love the trailer, to be honest, though I really like Hoganata the director,
Starting point is 00:20:55 so hopefully that's good. One battle after another. Yeah. Paul Thomas Anderson's speech. You're welcome. That was very kind of you to allow that to happen. I'll view it as penance for all the times I gave you things that you wanted. Um...
Starting point is 00:21:09 One buck. One buck for one bad election. I know, because I was filled with the spirit of, you know, generosity and... community. Is this how you treat your children? Saint Nick over here. Um... Ten weeks, that movie comes out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Ten weeks. You Looking forward to it? Yes. I would really be looking forward to a Venice opening night premiere. Oh, yeah. You think that will happen? No. I don't either, but I was thinking about it literally in the shower last night. Like, I wonder... What was I just reading about that might go to Venice?
Starting point is 00:21:39 And I was like, ha ha. Uh, it was something weird. So I was like, that would be funny if she has to see that. I can't remember, but I was like, that would be funny if she has to see that. ALL LAUGHING I can't remember, but I was like, this is hilarious. Oh, it was the Putin movie. Oh, sure. ALL LAUGHING
Starting point is 00:21:53 Yeah. I'll be there. Nothing would have been funnier than you seeing Joker fully, unfortunately that didn't happen. I know, yeah. Thank you, Sy, for raising that. Will you participate in the long standing ovations? And with Beetlejuice 2 being the opening.
Starting point is 00:22:04 That would have been great. Beetlejuice 2 is all right. Here's the thing about the ovations, is that it's just like, you're just standing around. They're so weird. It's a good-sized theater, but it's not like everyone's on, like, a balcony at the opera, removed from you. They're just kind of, like, sitting there, and everyone's just kind of clapping,
Starting point is 00:22:23 and the lights are up, and you're checking your phone and clapping some more It's very strange. Well honor honor Vladimir Putin You know, you think he'll be there no, it's just a say straight it's a say it's his movie about him I did not even know that was happening. Olivia. I say this is making a movie about Vladimir Putin. I think he's done Yeah, yeah, I think it. I was not aware of that. That's fascinating. OK. And you had Eddington.
Starting point is 00:22:49 And I had Eddington. That was my last movie, which I've seen and loved. And we will talk about on this show in 10 days. You know, I saw when I was watching the trailer for Eddington or maybe it was a clip from it. It reminded me of my Romulus story of
Starting point is 00:23:01 the two guys holding their phones at each other. That's basically Eddington. It is! It's pretty accurate. I forgot about that. It's pretty accurate. Oh god, the world is just a shitty place.
Starting point is 00:23:14 That's so perfect, okay. Okay, the highest Metacritic scores of the year so far. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going is just a shitty place. That's so perfect, okay. Okay, the highest Metacritic scores of the year so far. Three movies. Sorry, baby. Just had Ava Victor on the show last week. Let's talk about that. Familiar Touch, which I recommended on our Best of the Year episode,
Starting point is 00:23:38 and Caught by the Tides, which Adam Neiman... Sure....sure recommended on that episode as well. Seven movies have broken the $150 million threshold thus far. What was your meme of you versus Adam Naiman? Oh, Michael Porter Jr. and Cam Johnson. Who do you think is going to win that trade? The nuggets. Yeah, I think the nuggets too.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Movies that have crossed the $150 million threshold. Chris, how many of these movies have you seen? A Minecraft movie? Nope. Lilo and Stitch? Nope an outrage sinners. Yes How to train your dragon? Nope Captain America brave new world. Yes mission impossible the final reckoning. Yes Thunderbolts. Yes, five of seven. Good Joe popcorn over here
Starting point is 00:24:20 Amanda has seen all of them because she signed up for this life with me. No, I actually didn't see a Minecraft movie yet. Oh, she did. I thought you went and saw it at like 10 in the morning or something like that. No, I mean every single other movie you just listed I went and saw at 10 in the morning. Okay. That's okay because the spirit entered my body when I saw Minecraft and that was the turning point for Movies Are Back. That's when cinema came back to life.
Starting point is 00:24:42 That was when it all happened. Truffaut and Hitch We're rolling around in evidence. Thank you Jared Hess for all that you have done. According to DraftKings, the best picture betting odds right now, sentimental value at plus 500, which CR currently has, additional films which may or may not be auctioned off today. Sorry, sentimental value is the betting favorite for best picture? When you look at the best picture race this year. It's confusing.
Starting point is 00:25:11 We said this last year and it turned out to be the Enora year, but I remember in the first half of last year we were like, this is a weird year. And this is also kind of a weird year. There's not like a big strapping. I won't stand for any hit pieces on my guy Joe. My guy. Yoakim Trier? Yeah. Fuck that. We're not doing that. I'm not on this show. We love him. I'm just saying when the Oscars starts people are just like hmm what about this?
Starting point is 00:25:33 What about that? You mean when he gets in the news cycle? Yeah. What if I am Emilia Perez? No that's not gonna happen. Did you watch the trailer for Sentimental Value? No, I won't do it. Yeah. Okay. Show us the movie. I was quite touched by the trailer. Yeah, well sure.
Starting point is 00:25:52 I'm gonna be very moved by the film itself. I won't be watching that trailer or that trailer. The weapons trailer? I'm all good. Unfortunately, I saw it in a movie theater, the second one. I need that movie to be released immediately. I only saw the CinemaCon footage
Starting point is 00:26:03 and it looked really messed up and good. Yeah. No, you guys didn't auction that last time? We did not. It is available right now. Oh. Yeah. So that could be interesting for us. Hmm. Can I auction it if I have no intention of ever seeing it?
Starting point is 00:26:17 Sure. You can do whatever you like. Maybe. Maybe I'll say, but it's... Yeah, it seems really upsetting subject matter. I think it'll be a tough one for you. Yeah. Additional films that are on the list Maybe I'll say, but it's disappointing. Yeah, it seems really upsetting subject matter. I think it'll be a tough one for you. Additional films that are on the list for the best picture betting odds. After The Hunt, the Luca Guadagnino movie is plus 700.
Starting point is 00:26:33 The Ballad of a Small Player. Venice, Venice, Venice, Venice. Will almost assuredly be Venice. I think probably Atelier Ride too, if I had to guess. Okay, that's your business. Sorry, how is this introduced? Where these lists of films you're doing? Just films that are available?
Starting point is 00:26:46 These are just the best picture odds right now. As we think about what the slates are gonna be for us. After The Hunt is the Luca movie. The Ballad of a Small Plater is the Edward Berger, Macau, Colin Farrell gambling movie. I know. Absolutely. Which we're all very excited about. Now, I have a bit of a riff about Netflix
Starting point is 00:27:02 if you guys are interested to hear it. Sure. Oh, sure. Yeah, let's load it up. Well, it's nothing negative, really. It's just that I would argue that... six of the 14 most anticipated movies of the year are all Netflix movies. Sure, but then you're taking the box office hit. That's... and that's funny.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Interesting. Yeah, so you gotta want it. You've got J. Kelly, the Noah Baumbach movie. You've got Frankenstein from GDT. Train Dreams, which premiered at Sundance and they picked up. Wake Up Dead Man, the third Knives Out movie. The Ballad of a Small Player. And Catherine Bigelow's A House of Dynamite.
Starting point is 00:27:33 What the fuck? So that's a really exciting slate for Netflix. And that's the new guy, right? Well, I think that most of those movies are holdovers from the Scott Stuber era. But they'll be pushing them out. And I want to see all of those movies now. Can you retroactively draft Electric State?
Starting point is 00:27:50 You can. And then behind them, Hamnet, Sinners, Avatar, Fire and Ash. These are other potential Best Picture nominees. I think probably only two or three of those movies will be nominated for Best Picture. And there's gonna be a bunch of stuff that we don't know about or isn't listed here. Okay.
Starting point is 00:28:08 That we'll get into. Okay, movie auction. Now, we have to determine who gets to put the first movie up, right? So, Jack, can you help us with that? Jack, you wanna explain to people what you're using? Absolutely. Rest in peace, Top Gun hat. I do not own one. In the green room, I found a large Dungeons & Dragons die, which I will be using to select today's nominations. So it's like soccer ball size.
Starting point is 00:28:30 It is literally the size of a soccer ball. Which is, I'm told, is not what the normal die size is. I don't believe so. Okay. Shall I go? Yeah. Please. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:28:41 Great, great sound effects. The audio choice was strong. It's like, I'm campaigning over here. The audio choice was strong. I'm looking out for the audio listeners. Nominating first, CR. Yes. Give us the chaos.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Second will be Sean Fennessy. Third, Amanda Dobbins. Okay. When you, you had first picked the year that you did House of Gucci for like $500, right? Yeah. I'm not going to make that mistake, but I am going to, I'm going to keep you guys on your toes. You're going to make another mistake.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Um, we, so just for the listeners at home, we each have a thousand dollars of imaginary money to auction two. We all need five films to fill out our slate so we have 10 movies total. Yeah. So Chris, you have the honors. You know what you want to do? First pick, first nomination, first movie up for auction. Let's do, let's keep it in the same track we were on. I'm going to put Ballad of a Small Player up first. Edward Berger on the Sidney Pollock track could be the safest pair of hands we've got right now.
Starting point is 00:29:49 And this film sounds a little wistful, a little contemplative. It's about a con man on the run. Down and out in Macau, a place I have not been. And he is confronting ghosts, pandets of the soul, you know? But I'm getting, like, wafts, top notes of Michael Clayton from this one. Like, it feels like it's gonna be more than just, like,
Starting point is 00:30:17 Colin Farrell staring at things. And I like, I like its Oscar chances, despite its Netflix pedigree. I think it's gonna be seen by a lot of people and it feels like a good bet. So I'm gonna go with that. Unlike all the other Netflix titles I mentioned, I haven't really heard much about this movie.
Starting point is 00:30:40 I don't... Based on a novel, 2014 novel. Yeah, it's Rowan Joffe as the screenwriter. Right. Which is a little bit of a... Yeah, that's... What did he write? I was with you... 28 weeks later, before I go to sleep, the Nicole Kidman movie, not like...
Starting point is 00:30:53 He's no Tony Gilroy. Yeah. Okay. We'll see. Let's put a hundred bucks. We'll put a hundred bucks up there. A hundred bucks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:01 I'll say $125 to play the game with you. Also, we'll see Colin Farrell racking up some awards love over the last couple of years. Yes, that's right. Especially with Penguin. I think everybody enjoys interviewing him. He's a great guy to have around on the round tables. Great speeches. Yep.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Has been in LA for the last couple of years doing sugar and I feel like it's like out and about. Like people really like Colin Farrell right now. He will also be in A Big Bowl Beautiful Journey. I, Ballad of a Small Player, I don't think has a release date. I would assume October, maybe late September. That's pretty soon. It's probably a movie that's in the discussion for the festivals. Netflix usually has a really strong presence at Venice.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Do you have any interest in this movie? You like Edward Berger. I do. And I was, I think I was really, really into it, respectfully, until you brought up Michael Clayton and I was like, if this is like a B Michael Clayton, then I'll be a little sad. But also I would watch a B Michael Clayton every day. So I'll do what you did, 125. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:59 140. Okay, we're playing. 150. Is Colin Farrell, if he wins an Oscar Oscar does it feel like you've won an Oscar? Do you feel like that goes on my mantle? I think that it would put a capstone on one of the great sustained comebacks In acting modern acting history is that is that too big of a statement? I think he was really in the wilderness for a minute there
Starting point is 00:32:23 You know he was always working but working in not a lot of good stuff. And he seemed to have some personal stuff too. And, uh, but always super talented. What is it, 150? I'll say 155. 160. I mean, a movie about a high stakes gambler in Macau is pretty pornography to me.
Starting point is 00:32:40 I trust Edward Berger. Yeah. That's the thing. It's like, I do kind of believe this. Let me proffer a question to you both. Would you rather have Edward Berger make the next Bond and Denis Villeneuve make whatever movie Edward Berger was gonna make next?
Starting point is 00:32:57 Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I think that's probably true. You know, we all agree. Prisoners 2 still in captivity? That's the film that you want to see Dini make next. Which one, Enemy's the Big Spider and Prisoners 2 is Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman. I mean, Prisoners, but also Prisoners 2. Prisoners is when Jake Gyllenhaal goes to the guy's house.
Starting point is 00:33:19 He's like, why were you shopping in the kids' section? But Enemy is the unofficial sequel to The Wild Bunch about the division between man. It's about a pregnant lady and twins. That's cool. And spiders. Yep. Oh my God. What do you got?
Starting point is 00:33:35 You got 155? I think I said 160. 160. 165. Okay. I think I'm good. I do want to see this really bad. I just think no box office makes it complicated.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Yeah. And probably, I mean, the Oscars, the Academy does like Edward Berger. This is my thing. But they don't like him enough to nominate him. They didn't nominate him last year for Conkly. But they nominated him for All Quiet on the Western Front, didn't they? They did, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:59 Hmm. Did they? They may not have. I, let's, yeah, find out about that. Remember when you were like the... No, they did not. Only for screenplay. So he hasn't been nominated for Conclave? He's never been nominated for director.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Oh, okay. Okay, well I'm sticking with my guns. It's 165. I can't take it back. I can't take Colin Farrell gambling Macau from you. Thank you. I think this is a... This is gonna be a fun movie. But I'm excited to see this movie. This is a movie we should see together. Is it gonna be fun?
Starting point is 00:34:26 Or is it gonna be, you know... If it's Dark Knight of the Soul, that's great for me. That's true. As somebody who loves to gamble. I just don't think it's gonna be the card counter. I think it's gonna be... A little more pop. I think it's gonna be a little bit more pop.
Starting point is 00:34:35 Tilda Swinton swanning around. Right. I mean, Conclave, you could also say, is about longing and, you know, a man trying to figure out what he's done with his life. Exactly. So this could be... I hope that this has some... If this has court intrigue as well. Are you suggesting the card counter was not procedural?
Starting point is 00:34:54 I think it was more of like a, you know... It's about the procedures and Abu Ghraib. Yeah, right. Interrogation of torture. Right. Okay, so I have to... put a movie up. Congrats to you. Okay. Thanks. So 165 is what you did? Yeah, that was value to me.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Wow. I think this is good fodder for conversation. I'll put after the hunt on the board. All right. I feel like we should just talk it out now. Okay. This is a campus cancel culture drama from Luca Guadagnino and is it Justin Karitskas? Uh, that's a great question.
Starting point is 00:35:36 He wrote Sergeant Rock. I don't know if he wrote this. I don't think so. Who wrote this screenplay? Do you see Luca's doing a Sam Altman movie right now? Who is? Luca's gonna make a Sam Altman movie right now? Who is? Lucas is gonna make a Sam Altman movie next month. About OpenAI?
Starting point is 00:35:51 Mm-hmm. Without Andrew Garfield. Do you know what else Nora Garrett wrote? No. Don't. Beirut! Oh, shit! Yes! Wow! Wow! There are millions of people listening at home who have no idea what Beirut is, guys.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Great. Sure, but we had a Slack channel devoted to it. Chris, that Chris started. Chris, really. Chris's favorite film of 2016, Beirut, starring Jon Hamm. No, no, no, no. She was in it. Sorry, I fucked up. Tony Goer was in it. Tony Goer, I wrote Beirut. Of course he did. Yeah. Has Nora Garrett written a film? Um, I don't know. You know what, I gotta tell you, Google AI really fucked me on that one.
Starting point is 00:36:20 Has she written an email? Later. Has she written a postcard? Upcoming. This is still actress. IMDB redesign also not helping. I don't, I don't really know what else that she has written. Okay. Did she write Criminal Minds? Congratulations to first time screenwriter, Nora Garrett on her original, which is being adapted by Luca Guadagnino. And stars Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts plays a college professor as does Andrew Garfield,
Starting point is 00:36:47 Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloe Sevigny. And I believe Iowa Deberry is a student or a TA of some kind. Yes. And there is some suggestion of impropriety. Correct. And things unravel from there. This is obviously a very loaded setting, a loaded topic, a loaded filmmaker. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are back for the score of this movie, I will note. Very excited about it. A hundred dollars. Okay. To start our conversation. What's your last favorite Julia Roberts movie? My last favorite? Well, so... I'm always glad that she's back in my life.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Yeah. So I enjoyed both Leave the World Behind and what was the... the... Ticket to Paradise? Ticket to Paradise, you know? Where did you stand on Bena's back? We put it in the Hall of Fame
Starting point is 00:37:44 because she's really, really, really good in that very upsetting movie. That's fine. Sorry if I'm a Julia Roberts completist. You know, sorry if I've seen it all. Did you like her performance in Mother's Day? Oh, I actually didn't see that. And I thought you were going to say Money Monster. How about we do a live watch along in person on Mother's Day?
Starting point is 00:38:02 Of Mother's Day? Not on Mother's Day. On Father's Day, Of Mother's Day. Not on Mother's Day. On Father's Day, no problem. Should we do it in Atlanta? No. No, you know, Julia Roberts, also Smyrna, Georgia. That's right. That's my point.
Starting point is 00:38:15 Well, my double point. Yeah. I love Julia Roberts. But it is true that she has slowed down. It's been a minute. Yeah. Also, when we did the Hall of Fame, there was like a 15 year stretch between, I think it was like maybe Notting Hill
Starting point is 00:38:30 and then we didn't put anything into it. I thought she was great in Homecoming. She was really good in Homecoming. Actually, listen, she's Joy of Fucking Roberts. Great in Homecoming. You know? So I... Oh, I didn't tell you, we watched,
Starting point is 00:38:41 by the way, it's $100, so you might wanna bid something. Okay, 125. We watched, went to the way, it's $100. So you might want to bid something. Okay, $125. We watched, went to the video over the weekend to get... to rent something. And Alice pulled Mirror Mirror off the shelf. Oh, boy. Which, speaking of Julia, I'd never seen before. And...
Starting point is 00:38:59 Honestly, not bad. No, she was fine. A movie with a terrible critical reputation, directed by Tarsem Singe, who made The Cell and The Fall, which are both beautiful movies that are somewhat incoherent. That was why The Fall was one of Julia Roberts' letterboxes for. That makes a lot of sense. She loves Tarsim.
Starting point is 00:39:15 And I thought it was not bad. It also is... Who's Cinderella in that? Lily Collins. Oh, it's Lily Collins, and then Cinderella was Lily James. Correct. Lily Collins and Armie hammer. I do remember that who's in the which Lily is in the Riz Ahmed movie I think looks good relay. That's Lily James Lily James. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's the new David McKenzie movie. Yeah, you have heller high water fame. Okay
Starting point is 00:39:40 Okay on this yet. Nobody I'm 125 125 Are you you're not interested in this because you don't like Julia Roberts and hate college campuses? I just think that it's a fool's errand to go up against the Guadalino twins over here. You don't really care about Luca. I think he's fine. Interesting. I liked challenges.
Starting point is 00:39:59 Okay. Yeah. That's not... And I like how much he works. I'll say 135, by the way. I think his prolific... 150. Output, that was not. And I like how much he works. I'll say 135, by the way. I think his prolific outplay is cool. 150. You don't, but where are you on?
Starting point is 00:40:10 165. The peach one? Well, that's called me by your name, but what about a bigger splash? 175. Love that. I am loved. I feel like I liked Luca Guadagnino before he became Luca Guadagnino.
Starting point is 00:40:20 Yeah, same. Oh, interesting. You just punk rocked us. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, guess what I like it all so um I Said 165 I said 175 185 okay, I think this is a big awards contender in what could be a soft year sure now look at Like I don't like this yeah, but that's fine. I always do 200 okay 210 did you like he Suspiria, right?
Starting point is 00:40:45 He did, which I enjoyed. Did you like that? No, I didn't. No, not in a mean way. Dakota? I was just being definitive. Okay. Because that story centered women?
Starting point is 00:40:55 What was the issue? There wasn't enough William Wilt in it. 220. 230. 240. Do you think Julia will be better or worse than she was in Larry Crown in this movie? You guys are in the twos for this.
Starting point is 00:41:10 So I'm in a two forty. Yeah, I... This is one of the big dramas of the year. Listen, I am a lifetime Luca Guadagnino ticket holder. You are really just stimulating at me, and I was just like, you know, this is a Netflix film, so the B.O. is out. No, it's not. It's an Amazon MGM film getting a theatrical release. You have been just like, you know, this is a Netflix film, so the BO is out. No, it's not. It's an Amazon MGM film getting a theatrical release.
Starting point is 00:41:26 You have been just like, your disinterest has been wafting towards me. By Julia. And about Luca. And about, you know, men in well-cut suits. Well, you were very dismissive of Dini Villeneuve's early work. You know? That's not true. Well...
Starting point is 00:41:41 Uh, you should be forced to watch Enemy every six months, just so you understand what it's like to be a man in this world. Do I have it right now? Yeah, I have it at 240. That's not true. Well, you should be forced to watch Enemy every six months, just so you understand what it's like to be a man in this world. Do I have it right now? Yeah, I have it at 240 is what I have right now. I'll say 250. 260.
Starting point is 00:41:52 I haven't even been using the board. The board is so helpful. Okay. 260, you went right to 260, my goodness. So Andrew Garfield, Monica Barberow, where are you guys on this? They were at Wimbledon. They're both in the Sam Albin movie.
Starting point is 00:42:02 Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're working together. I know, but they, did you see? Yes, very dramatically photographed at Wimbledon, yes. Yeah, I saw. And they were canoodling in the Sam Albin movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're working together. I know. But they did you see... Yes, very dramatically photographed at Wimbledon. Yes. And they were canoodling in the... I don't know whether it was the Royal Box or one of the boxes. And Olivia Rodrigo is with a guy or she's just... Is she into a tennis player?
Starting point is 00:42:15 There was like a video of her being like, ooh. No, but I think she was there with someone. She was on a date, I think. You're just noting that she was also at Wimbledon and had nothing to do with Andrew Garfield? Yeah. I'm just talking about celebrities at Wimbledon. Great, great for you guys. There's not a lot of sports on right now.
Starting point is 00:42:29 Yeah. Is that hard for you? I mean, I like the Phillies, but it just takes me a long time to rip up. First place. Why are they? What's up? I understand that, like, Sunday night, baseball
Starting point is 00:42:39 or whatever, and there's, like, only the one game. But it, like, yesterday at 4. 430 the end of a holiday weekend I like you know we try not to put too too much screen time for the kids but like sports don't count so I was like give me something give me anything and there was just like nothing on we got to expand the programming it's a travel day for baseball usually get a lot of day games on Sunday so people can travel on Sunday evenings. I know, but like, just for, until football starts, you know? There's a window here.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I love an afternoon ball game. I agree. I couldn't even get like a re-stream of the Wimbledon that I wasn't awake for. Might have been a lot of West Coast teams on the East Coast as well. Oh, you can get it on ESPN+. Oh, okay, but I, if I don't have that, I'm insulted at this point because of how much I'm paying be on ESPN+. Oh, okay, but if I don't have that, I'm insulted at this point because of how much I'm paying.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Fair enough. I'm gonna let you have that for the time. Oh, thanks so much. Okay, great. I'm so excited. I really, really hope that I get to see Julia Roberts on the red carpet at Venice, but I don't wanna meet her. I already met her once.
Starting point is 00:43:40 It was great and very stressful. And that's enough for a lifetime. Wasn't stressful, she was super normal and nice. She was wonderful, she was the best, but I don't... I was stressed out. I asked her about Larry Crown, she answered my question deeply. Yeah, I asked her about dancing. And store pants.
Starting point is 00:43:55 Okay, you now have to pick a movie. Okay. Wow. Alright, so I got the Luca. Do, do, do do do. Is this like an exciting slate for the rest of the year? What do you think? I'm not seeing a lot of box office pop.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Well, that would lead to you having to pick a movie that maybe we're unsure about. Now, I think I had a rule, at least for myself, that I wouldn't draft something that I've already seen. Right, you did. So that takes a couple things off the board for me. Okay. Of note.
Starting point is 00:44:27 Not a lot. But it does not take off, for example, Superman. Okay. Or the Fantastic Four. I don't think I'm gonna... I haven't seen either of those. I'm not gonna draft Superman. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Do you think that we're getting away from, like, just expressing enthusiasm for certain movies if we put too much emphasis on box office? No, I guess not. We're fine. What do you... What do you... Like, too much in on box office? No, I guess not. We're fine. Like too much in the game you mean? Yeah. No, I think it's a component of the show. We're doing Snake, right?
Starting point is 00:44:52 So I have to do two? Jack? Yeah, Jack is nodding. Okay. Can you do Snake? It doesn't matter. We don't have to. We're bidding, so it's like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:00 I'm trying to clarify on, do I have- I don't remember if we did that. Okay, well, what would you like to do today, Sean? Let's live in the moment. You've just gotten after the hunt. I need you to be a little bit kinder in this experience. And just consider warmth. Consider reaching out across the aisle
Starting point is 00:45:18 from the Marjorie Taylor Greene seat to the side of good. I don't think that's funny. Well, unfortunately, you're alone in that. There are millions at home just thinking of themselves, what an act. Okay. It's... They're having a good chuckle.
Starting point is 00:45:32 Uh, well, I'm glad. Everyone needs laughter, I guess. Okay, let's make it interesting. Uh, 100 bucks, Avatar, Fire and whatever. I don't even know the full name. Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash. Okay don't even know the full name. Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:46 I'm gonna go buck 20. I've never seen an Avatar movie. So why not start? What? Really? I think I saw a little bit of the first one. There's only been two. Yeah. But you didn't go.
Starting point is 00:45:58 No, couldn't care less. It just seems like an incredibly giant waste of resources and talent, honestly. The dumbest shit I've ever seen is fucking getting Sam Worthington as a six foot five small forward who breathes underwater. Give me a fucking break. Are you kidding me? This is one of the greatest filmmakers we've ever seen who has wasted his fucking life making these movies.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Uh huh. The dumbest fucking idea. wasted his fucking life making these movies. The dumbest fucking idea. I agree with this. I'm 47. I don't have the time to learn all this. You should also. Yes. But I need a box office hit. So I go one for me. And I'm going to see this.
Starting point is 00:46:41 I'm going to see Fire and Ash because I am. But you're not going to see the other two. I've become more interested in fire. They're older. I'm gonna see Fire and Ash because I am... But you're not gonna see the other two. I've become more interested in Fire, the older I get, and Ash. So I think that also... who's new in this? When was the last one? She was. And she broke the world record for holding her breath. You think that these movies are stupid, but you haven't seen any of them.
Starting point is 00:47:01 I know what they're about, though. I've seen most of one. Can you guess what the world is? You love James Cameron. You wouldn't even try it? This is a fucking giant betrayal of his- You haven't seen the movie! Okay, fine, Sean, is it good? Of course it's good. Okay, outside of the visual aspect,
Starting point is 00:47:16 the technological achievement. I mean, the story is- They're fables, they're ecological fables, it's fun. We like the earth. What do you think the world record is for holding her breath? Seven minutes. Seven minutes, 15 seconds. OK. That was I was hoping you would guess like three minutes.
Starting point is 00:47:31 Seven minutes is a long time. Is take what you can do and multiply it by three. OK, so you can do two minutes, you think? Yeah. Oh, God. When was the last time you checked that? I couldn't get close to that at this point. Yeah. It's been a while, but I think I could do two minutes. I got to tell you, so I do like. do like test it out. I know bring in the water
Starting point is 00:47:51 No, but I do that, you know the ice cubes the thing Yeah, the Paul Newman thing because you're hungover No, well, I started doing it when I was pregnant for skin health very swollen But but no wellness just takes over all the cool shit. I agree. This is for guys who want to drink nine scotches. This is not for women who need to glow on YouTube. It is suddenly, we've got like a 9.30 a.m. record time
Starting point is 00:48:16 and I'm like, fuck, I'm 40, I'm on YouTube. I need to dunk my head in a bucket of ice water. But I couldn't even make it to counting to 30 this morning. Now it is very cold. Cold water. It is true. So you think you can do two minutes at like average. I think so.
Starting point is 00:48:31 Okay. I think so. What did you think of the fact that William Holden's face looked like an old shoe in the Wild Bunch? Just like a guy who'd been left in the sun for several years. I forgot about the flashback scenes in Wild Bunch and the fact that they're like,
Starting point is 00:48:44 let's just shave his mustache, that means he's young. There's a black, like, pomade in his hair, you know, that makes you shoeshine. Okay, so is it 140? Yeah. I'll say 150. I mean, these movies are good. They're obviously very flawed by the simplistic nature of the fable. He says that, but that seems unlikely.
Starting point is 00:49:05 But now he's also making, you know... Yeah, Oppenheimer too. The real arm again, yeah. I'll do 170. So you're not gonna watch the first two films, but you will watch this one. Well, maybe it's a good project. It'll be a good fall project is to get into...
Starting point is 00:49:20 I think I got it broadly, you know? That human beings are jacked into this fucking different world, right? Right? They have like a little thing in their back. I don't want to spoil it for you. I mean, things evolve around the technology is what I'll tell you. All right. So the second one is more surfing underwater, right? Yeah. It's an aspect of it, yes.
Starting point is 00:49:41 Yeah. And then the third one, we're going to go... What is the other aspect? The people from Earth who want to take over the land. Which is Giovanni Rubizzi. Oh, I forgot about them. Yeah, it still exists. Yeah, Rubizzi. Is she good?
Starting point is 00:49:57 She is. Well, but yeah, I don't want to... But there's something complicated that, you know, it's weird. The second one is quite strange and really good, but also not rewatchable. Okay, I'll watch it for the first time. Can you watch it on one of the things? Apple Vision Pro? What happened with those?
Starting point is 00:50:11 Those still happening? You can still buy them, but they didn't really take off as a consumer product. Yeah, it was pretty heavy. You need to get a neck support. Okay. So do you need a second box? We need two box office hits? We need, well, the old rules were you needed two movies
Starting point is 00:50:26 to gross more than $100 million. But the only way to score points now is to have a high grosser. Now this is a good pick. I'll say 180 by the way. This would be a good pick because these movies always make a billion dollars. They always make hundreds of millions of dollars
Starting point is 00:50:38 in the United States. But he has sinners. He has sinners. But he needs another? Well, it's just a point total. I think also the fact that there's a lot of streaming stuff or a lot of the critic stuff, as Sean pointed out with Netflix, might not get any box office. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:50:56 It could come and go. One of the problems with those streaming movies is sometimes it's like, oh, it just happened. It's just out. Yes. You've also got to consider what's going to be the highest grossing domestic film. I'll do 190. Yeah, I'll say 200. I mean, this is an important movie to the movie year.
Starting point is 00:51:12 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not to Cameron's legacy or anything, but these movies always get a ton of Academy Award nominations. So... I think it would be more helpful for him for the Academy Awards if he promised this would be the last one. And it would be more helpful for him for the Academy Awards if he promised this would be the last one. And it would be more helpful to me. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Okay. Because it's a big difference between me being like, I'll catch up on three of these and have like a more well-informed opinion versus this is going to be a fiver because I'm out. So this is kind of similar to where the first two Lord of the Rings movies were in my opinion? Where they like the last film got best picture and then just sound production design and visual effects Will this movie get more nominations less is it actually a serious contender for picture? I don't know You didn't see the footage from this right? No, I left like it's my boy, right? I mean I thought was fucking amazing now
Starting point is 00:52:04 I already like these movies movies and I love them visually, but obviously fire is a different element applied to the story and I thought it just looked really, really cool. So, I'm very excited about this. I'll go 210. Guess I'll go 220. I'll say 230. I'll do 240.
Starting point is 00:52:21 Wow. I'll do 250. This is a movie I want to see. There's actually 240. Oh. I'll do 250. This is a movie I want to see. There's actually not a ton of movies on this list that I'm like, I really want to see this in a big movie theater. I mean, if we're applying that, then I don't really.
Starting point is 00:52:39 I don't really want to see it that much. I mean, I will. I'm sure. That's not the only metric I'm guessing for me personally. I like to have movies on my slate that I want to see it that much. I mean, I will. I'm sure... That's not the only metric I'm guessing for me personally. I like to have movies on my slate that I want to see. I respect Big Jim, but also, you know, I'm kind of with Chris on this. I just, like, also how much time we've collectively spent. Would you be like if he was making another alien movie?
Starting point is 00:52:56 Would you be happy about that? I guess... True Lies 2? So? I mean... It's like, think of the alternative. He created new IP. This is a new story. Sure. I don't care. Does anybody, like, can't wait to iterate off of the Avatar story?
Starting point is 00:53:11 No, I just mean it's an original event movie. It's the hardest thing to do in the world. What is it with their braids? That's how they communicate and mate. That is how they mate. Yeah. I knew that part. Probably because I told you one time when we were about to watch a movie about two guys getting ready to kill each other So here's what happens Chris like their hair like intertwined
Starting point is 00:53:35 I'll happily take this movie for 250 60 Okay, you're gonna wait cuz you think I'm bidding you up, but I'm not I am interested on the board. Yeah, I'll say 270 I Would like to see it how many noms did the first film get? I'm bidding you up, but I'm not. I am interested. You put it on the board. Yeah. I'll say 270. I would like to see it. How many noms did the first film get? 275, but you're gonna jump up there. Nine nominations for the first film. Not so many for the second? 280, I'll say.
Starting point is 00:54:00 The second got four. You're what's wrong with Hollywood though. What do you mean? I'm what's wrong with Hollywood? You just proclaimed that Jurassic World Rebirth was good on a publicly... I didn't say it was good. I said it was not bad and I had fun.
Starting point is 00:54:13 Yeah, fun, which is code for I've turned my brain off and I expect less. Yeah, but you do that all the time. It's just when you do it about, you know, genre movies that you like, it's fine. Yeah, they call it taste. And when I do it... It's just when you do it about, you know, genre movies that you like, it's fine. Yeah, they call it taste. And when I do it... It's called taste.
Starting point is 00:54:29 I have the best taste of anyone you know. It's like, it's actually incredible how good my taste is. Do you think you... I don't want to get into this, actually. So I'll do... 290. Mmm, 300. Wow. I'll step out.
Starting point is 00:54:46 I'll step there. I wanted to get you high up there. Not 3000. Come on guys. 300. Okay. Congratulations to you. Thank you, thank you. I feel good about this.
Starting point is 00:54:56 I feel like I needed this. Okay. I don't really have another- So I need to do another one. Big box office winner. I don't, maybe it'll get good reviews who put up avatar him No, I did Do I have the sake or not? I don't care
Starting point is 00:55:11 No, you got your two are there not you're right. You're right. You're doing a great job so far. Thank you so much It's like obviously they have the best taste of any human being on planet earth being on planet Earth. I know. I just, you know... So Avatar had an 83 Metacritic score, and Avatar the Way of Water had a 67 Metacritic score. Yeah, you think it's gonna rebound?
Starting point is 00:55:37 Probably not, but you never know. Hopefully it's not in the 50s. Do-do-do-do, what should I do? I mean, some of these movies look good, you know? It's a bold stance. I'm open to them. Let's see. Did you see the Knicks are strongly considering Ben Simmons?
Starting point is 00:55:57 Oh, my God. Really? LOL. That's funny. Even I know that's funny. Even I know that guy doesn't show up to work. You guys are getting dap'd up a little too much right now. Oh. Yeah. Don't get too ahead of yourselves. As someone who's been there, presumptive Eastern Conference finalists, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:56:11 As I recall, you have not been to the Eastern Conference finals. Just enjoy what happened last year is all I'm saying. Okay. Yeah. What's this Rami Malek movie? I mean, not that I'm in it. The No.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Should I pull up the movies? Oh my God, I'm really not gonna do that. The contracts of your biggest stars? Yeah, I'm in it. Should I pull up the movies? Oh my god, I'm really not going to do that. The contracts of your biggest stars? Yeah, I'm well aware. We're in a transition phase. We're moving towards a younger generation of players. While still having some veteran leadership in the building. $75, Roof Man. Roof Man. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:42 Derek C. and Fritz. Yeah. They put a lot of this movie in the trailer. Just going to say that. Yeah. Derek C. and Fritz. Yeah. Yeah. They put a lot of this movie in the trailer. Just going to say that. OK. I felt like it. Yeah. But I thought it looked cool and fun. And I love Derek C. and Fritz a lot. Everything from his Dick's Sporting Goods commercials to Place Beyond the Pines.
Starting point is 00:56:58 So I'm going to bid 80 bucks. OK. Eighty five dollars. This will almost certainly be a fun time at the movies. Will it be a good time at the movies? Oh, boy, here we go. We don't know. Concerned troll Sean. We don't know. I think so.
Starting point is 00:57:13 Yeah. Good star. Channing Tatum. Good cast. It was Chris who did $85, right? Yeah. Chris was $85? I think Chris went to $80 and I went to $85.
Starting point is 00:57:22 Oh, you went to $85? Oh, great. Oh, that was fast. Um, $90, sure. Kirsten Dunst, uh to 85. Oh, you went to 85? Oh, great. Oh, that was fast. 90, sure. Kirsten Dunst, yes. Who's the other guy? Is there another guy in it? Clenons? No. No, I believe it's...
Starting point is 00:57:37 Oh, my God. Tyrion from Lord of the Rings. Oh, Dinklage. Dinklage, not Lord of the Rings from Game of Thrones. Peter Dinklage is in it. Who else? Ben Mendelsohn is in it? Of course. Of course, gotta be in it. The Keith Stanfield, Geno Temple. Ben Mendelsohn in Place Beyond the Pines. Holy shit, man.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Yeah. Yeah. The only thing that's better is him in Killing Me Softly. That's true. Did you ever watch Andor? No. Remember you were going to watch that on the plane when you went to Atlanta? No. What happened? What did watch that on the plane when you went to Atlanta? No. What happened?
Starting point is 00:58:06 What did you watch on the plane instead? I had no internet on the way there and I forgot to download it. I probably watched a movie on the seat. Yeah. I'm trying to think of what, I could probably look it up if you'd like, if you'd like to vamp. Okay, but so it wasn't Andorra. I didn't, I haven't done Andorra yet either.
Starting point is 00:58:26 I have a lot of catch up to do. The less said about my trip to Atlanta, the better in my opinion. Except for the lovely people that you met, right? Honestly, the people were awesome. I really had a nice time chatting with strangers there, but everything else was bad. I got to Andorra, I'm behind on it just like that.
Starting point is 00:58:40 To finish the bear? No, I got to finish the bear. You know what I watched? I got to tell you something, Amanda. Honestly, go ahead. Snow White. Okay. We have to have a serious conversation about what's going on
Starting point is 00:58:50 with Carrie and Miranda on this fucking show. Well, okay, I know. I have to catch up, but it almost got spoiled for me. Apparently, they like accidentally killed someone twice now or something. I don't really know what's going... There are plot holes. Listen, I'm going to do it tonight.
Starting point is 00:59:01 He is going to see the new Spike Lee film with my husband and I am staying home, preparing a zucchini pasta and watching it just like that. Okay. So that's... Women can't have it all. Maybe I'll do a face mask. I honestly was thinking about it.
Starting point is 00:59:17 It's maybe time for my Manuka Honey face mask again. This is a huge night. This is incredible. A real roof man night. $95 for a roof man. Okay. You don't have feelings? I'm wearing a face mask again, so, you know. It's a huge night. This is incredible. A real Roof Man night, $95 for Roof Man. Okay. You don't have feelings? I think Roof Man will get any Oscar noms. I don't know where I'm at with Channing right now.
Starting point is 00:59:33 He is actually weirdly in what I'll call the Statham zone, which is that he has a fan base that will kind of get him to $30 million at the box office pretty much every time out. Like he's like, eh, I made a movie with the dog. People are like, I like that. That seems cool. In this movie, he plays a bank robber who's incarcerated, breaks out, and then holds up,
Starting point is 00:59:54 hides out, and then Toys R Us. Toys R Us, probably the single most exciting place in the universe to me from the ages of one to nine. Sure. Were you a Toys R Us person, Chris Ryan? I was, but... Wow, see, I knew that this was... Yeah. I was.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Until you discovered hip-hop and lifeguarding. Star Wars dolls, like Star Wars action figures. I will... And Transformers. I'll do 100 for Roof Man. Listen, and that's all for Kiki. 99 of my hundred dollars is for Kirsten Dunst. Okay. And then the other one is for Kirsten Dunst. Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:25 And then the other one is... But you didn't support her in Civil War. Interesting how that shook out. Well, I think that Alex Garland didn't support her, you know? Yes, he did. He cast her and... He put her in the biggest box office hit of her career. Is that true? Even beyond... even Bring It On?
Starting point is 01:00:42 He centered... Definitely bigger than Bring It On. Let's look. Rude. Well, Bring It On was more of a cult hit. That's true. But what an achievement it is. Was she ever in a big franchise movie? She must have been. Are we giving this to Amanda? Uh, sure.
Starting point is 01:00:55 Okay. Well, of course she was in Spider-Man. What am I thinking? Yeah. You got two of the movies that I feel like are very you... Thank you. ...oriented, you coded. Thank you so much. I guess Sean and Europe?
Starting point is 01:01:08 Uh, yes, I'm up. She was in, here are her biggest box office hits just for the sake of conversation. The three Spider-Man movies, of course. Hidden Figures? Oh, yeah. In which she supported... Yeah, she's the racist administrator at NASA.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Kirsten Dunst is a racist? In that movie? In the movie. In the movie. In the movie. And then, but then Glenn Powell as John Glenn is not. This is really interesting. And Kevin Costner is on the case. And then is on the fence.
Starting point is 01:01:35 You were right about something. Yeah. Interview with the vampire comes next, then Jumanji, then Civil War, but only by $400,000 about Bring It On. Okay. And is that adjusted for inflation? Um, no. It is not. But you gotta, if you want to consider international.
Starting point is 01:01:51 I'm featured. Great hair. The boys all love to stare. That's right. Yeah. Incredible film. When will you show it to Alice? When can I show it to Alice?
Starting point is 01:01:59 That feels a little early, I would say, for Bring It On. Sure. She turns four this week. Yeah, but I'm going to forget lessons, you know? Yeah, absolutely. I support them. What were your favorite toys? Said Toys R Us. So Star Wars, that's it?
Starting point is 01:02:12 BMX bikes. OK. OK. Uh-huh. Do you know what a Tamagotchi is? I do. OK. You don't have to say it like that.
Starting point is 01:02:23 No, I just do. All right. Have you started introducing those to the house? No, I jacked it, no. So I had to explain what Tamagotchi is? I do. Okay. You don't have to say it like that. No, I just do. All right. Have you started introducing those to the house? No, I jacked at it, no. So I had to explain what Tamagotchi are. You know about little boo-boos? I heard it referenced recently. I don't know what that is though.
Starting point is 01:02:36 It's a bag charm. Oh yeah. But they're beanie baby level prices and interest. Kids put stuff on crocs and bags now. Yeah, yeah. Like all the charms I saw. Yeah, that's crocks and bags now, like a lot of charms I saw. Yeah, that's all over the place. It's a lot. This episode is brought to you by State Farm.
Starting point is 01:02:51 Life's full of decisions, big and small, and sometimes you make one you can really stand behind. For example, trying to get my daughter to watch more movies. I suggested a childhood favorite recently, and she bought in, and I'm glad I did. State Farm gets it. Making confident choices can make all the difference. That's why with the State Farm personal price plan you can choose the right amount of coverage to
Starting point is 01:03:09 help create an affordable price for you. Talk to a State Farm agent today to learn how you can choose to bundle and save with the personal price plan. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Prices are based on ratings plans that vary by state. Coverage options are selected by the customer, availability, amount of discounts and savings, and eligibility vary by state. I'm putting weapons on the board. Remember when we used to wear Jordans instead of Crocs? Used to, still wearing Jordans.
Starting point is 01:03:34 Knox has Jordans. He hasn't shown you his Jordans? No. He likes to say Jordans, but the way he says ours, like very weird still, cause he's my son. It's like, I'm wearing Jordans. That's Michael Jordan. Okay.
Starting point is 01:03:46 I'll have to speak to him about that. Uh, $50 for weapons. $150. $150. Here we go. This is the second, I guess technically, the third feature film from Zack Craigert. First since Barbarian.
Starting point is 01:04:01 This is the movie I'm most excited to see this... not one battle after another, but otherwise. This is the movie I'm most excited to see this is not one battle after another but otherwise this is number one. Yeah. After one battle after another. Number two. I see. Not Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere. We'll talk about that in a bit.
Starting point is 01:04:17 $200. Okay, game on. Did you check out the viral website that they made for this? I did not. I didn't yet either. Oh, let's do it right now. Blair Witch style? Weapons, movie, website. Well...
Starting point is 01:04:29 Loves to spoil. Just two guys trying to stay in a state of wonder. I was super mad when the trailer started for this. I'm not trying to stay in a state of wonder. Oh, hold on. Um, this, I honestly can't. I'm really sorry. Like, this is, I'm sure it's a really good movie.
Starting point is 01:04:46 No disrespect to Zach Craig. It was like, uh, I, no thanks. Uh, topic wise. Uh, $225. Okay. Um, I think that you are, you're both. If this pops, you handle your, your issues in different ways and that's okay. What issues?
Starting point is 01:05:03 I just want to be excited. I just want to be, sit down just want to sit down and feel deeply. I want to be dominated. Yeah. By film. Yes. Yeah, all right. Zach Kroeger put on a high heel and step on Chris's neck.
Starting point is 01:05:15 225, is that what I have? Yes. Where does he go after this? If this blows up. He already signed up to do Resident Evil. That's cool. He's doing Resident Evil. Is Mikey Madison in that?
Starting point is 01:05:27 I believe she, what did she turn, she turned down Star Wars? For that? To do that? Is that true? I mean, I think in the Star Wars movie, she was just gonna be like looking at Ryan Gosling and being like, you're so cool. Well, show me the lie.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Would you do that? They're not gonna rush up. Would I stare at... Sean Levy calls you. I would giggle. I couldn't do it. I would just giggle. No. Monday, 9 a.m.
Starting point is 01:05:51 Yeah. You've just removed your face from an ice-cold bowl. You reek of zucchini from the night before. You're covered in pasta. Children are crawling all over you. And Sean Levy says, -"Good morning, Amanda." -"Yes. I'm glad you have awoken. You may still feel as though you were sleeping because I am the dream weaver.
Starting point is 01:06:11 You have such beautiful skin. Thank you. We think you would be great next to Ryan Gosling. You will only be on your knees for the entirety of this film, but you will be genuflecting in the general direction of our star Jedi, Ryan Gosling, in the first new Star Wars feature film in seven years. Two follow-up questions.
Starting point is 01:06:32 Am I allowed to ask follow-up questions of Sean Levy? Does Sean Levy not answer questions? I'm not sure. Is this like a Miranda Priestly situation? I don't know. I can't say for sure. Number one, where? Where are we filming? Probably Turkey or like, Hungary. Hungary. Hungary.
Starting point is 01:06:50 Hungary. No, in England. England. We're shooting in England. Pinewood. Yeah, we're shooting in Pinewood. Okay, open to that. Number two, what's the money? Your salary is $88.
Starting point is 01:07:02 Interesting. Money talks for you, huh? Yeah. No. Your salary is $88. Interesting. Money, your money talks for you, huh? $88? Yeah. No. Your salary is whatever is remaining from your drafts late. No, your salary is more than scale, but less than an A-list star. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:16 You're getting $800,000 to do this, but you have to turn over two plus years of your lives, including reshoots. For, so $800,000 for two years. So 400k a year. If you want to break it down like that, sure. That's not $800,000 for two years. So 400K a year. If you want to break it down like that, sure. That's not how it works in the movie biz. I understand that, but that is how, listen, I'm a business mom, okay?
Starting point is 01:07:34 Yeah, I get it. You've got to promote the film. 10% to your representation, you know? Right, right, right, right. You gotta talk to me through... Well, 10%, that's low. Are you handling all of my kids, like my family's like housing and... We're making Star Wars.
Starting point is 01:07:50 You don't have leverage to negotiate that. Well then no. You're turning it down on the face of that. Yeah. I can't go stare at Ryan Gosling for two years without my children. It's a great time because I've just gotten word that in Atlanta, they will green light the Mother's Day screening that we discussed because of your response to that question. So congratulations. Well done.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Um, 250? 260. We're still bidding on weapons. 270. I'd really like to see it. I would like to show it to you. I don't know why I haven't been shown this film. I'm just gonna put that out there right now. Okay. Did you ever watch Ozark? No. But I listened to you talk about it quite a bit.
Starting point is 01:08:28 And you know the Julia Garner meme? Which one? If you want to stop me, you're gonna have to fucking kill me. Yeah, I do have that one. Uh, 275. Just a little jab right in the chin, right there. Not big, just like testing my distance. You're just gonna draw me out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:08:46 And you're hoping that I go for the uppercut only for you to shadow, duck and move. Mike Tyson's knockout. Watch out. I'm just thinking about like what number I would leave my children for. Well, you know, at some point. Do you think about that every day?
Starting point is 01:09:01 No, no, no, at some point then like I can handle, if they give me enough money, then I'll just pay for all of this stuff, you know? But I don't know if 400 is enough for that, respectfully. If Luca Guadagnino is like Amanda, steal Magnolias II, Julia Roberts comes back as a force ghost. The problem is, I'll pay you $2 million, but you have to live in Atlanta for two years.
Starting point is 01:09:24 Oh, yeah I see you in Casey Musgraves. Okay. I mean she seems like a great hand. Julia Garner. Okay. The new Steel Magnolias. I love the Casey Musgraves call. That's excellent. But you also have you can't see your children. But in Atlanta, they would just stay with their grandparents. No. No. Oh, then no. It's a close set.
Starting point is 01:09:42 Yeah, no. It's a close set. It's a close set, so. It's a close set. Yeah, no. It's a close set. Because then it's a close set, so. It's very secretive. Yeah. Codename Star Wars. Yeah. But it's actually still Magnolias.
Starting point is 01:09:52 Two. Uh, 285. 300. You really want this film. What if you don't like it? It's not possible. It's not fucked up kids. Those kids are fucked up.
Starting point is 01:10:05 Yeah. Do we even know that? They run around like this, right? Well, something was calling to them, clearly. I don't know what it was. Last night at 2 17 a.m., every child from Mrs. Gandy's class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark, and they never came back. You know what that reminds me of?
Starting point is 01:10:26 This movie is good, but not great. But when I first saw the commercial on TV for Needful Things, the Stephen King adaptation, I felt alive. That was like one of the first times I can remember feeling like, I need to see that now. And I probably didn't see it for some years, because it was R-rated, and I was like 10 when it came out. But this movie gives me a similar feeling to that now. And I probably didn't see it for some years because it was R-rated and I was like 10 when it came out. But this movie gives me a similar feeling to that commercial. Uh, 310. Wow. 320. Okay. 325. 335. Are you guys going to be able to see this together?
Starting point is 01:11:02 Hopefully. I think that's the idea. That's nice. At 2 17 am. You're too traveling. They should do a 2 17 am screening. I'm gonna be on Stu Magnolias too. 2 17 am screening. Yeah. That's the only time I am able to sleep.
Starting point is 01:11:12 So I really can't do it then. I thought about going to see Jurassic World Rebirth, the 12 am screening last week when we were doing that. Okay. And I was like, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it.
Starting point is 01:11:23 I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm't do it then. I thought about going to see Jurassic World Rebirth, the 12 a.m. screening last week when we were doing that. And I was just like, I don't think I can do that. I don't want to get out of Jurassic World at 2.45 a.m. It's crazy, as recently as two years ago, I was ripping midnight screenings and I just can't do it anymore, it's over.
Starting point is 01:11:40 It's curtains, it's like kid plus aging. Well, yeah, welcome. Just not at the tail, but we used to have a stop, a clock on these. Yeah, we're hanging out, it's curtains. It's like kid plus aging. It's just... We used to have a stop clock on these. Yeah, we're hanging out. It's okay. Okay. There's a clock right there. 345. 345, Chris. Chris is like, I want this.
Starting point is 01:11:54 355. He's getting me back for bidding him up on Avatar. 365. I think you both just really want this, and I think that's beautiful. This is among my most anticipated movies of the year. $400. It looked very good.
Starting point is 01:12:09 Wow, $400. Well. I mean, what else are you gonna bid on? Wicked for good? I won't be. Can you believe we have to do Wicked for good this year? I really cannot. Do you think that that's gonna be
Starting point is 01:12:21 like the Avatar 2 of Wicked movies where it's just like, we just agree that we're not gonna do it again this year? It's like, are they gonna really go through the same promo cycle again? Right. And they're gonna play with puppies and cry and... I think obviously the core fan base is extremely excited about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:37 And it's gonna do good business. Will it be bigger than the last movie is an interesting question. Right. And then will it be able to match whatever? Did it have ten nominations? I can't remember. Maybe more. Right. You know, and the buzz on it is, of course, that the second half of the musical...
Starting point is 01:12:53 The songs aren't as good. And it's just... They should take some songs from Nebraska and put it in Wicked for Good. That's a good idea. State Trooper. Yeah. That'd fit in really well. Prince Fiyero sings State Trooper. That'd be awesome.
Starting point is 01:13:07 I did think Jonathan Bailey was very good in Jurassic World. He was very good. I agree with you. I was impressed with him. I felt like he had real incredible movie presence. Totally. 410. 420. Because I'm going to get high watching weapons, if you know what I mean.
Starting point is 01:13:24 You're smoking on that weapons pack. 430. Interesting. what I mean. Yeah, you're smoking on that weapons pack. Yeah. 430. Interesting. This is fun. Pretty aggressive, yeah. I think you know that there's no limit for me. And I think you're driving me up. But for me, the action is the juice.
Starting point is 01:13:39 440. 440. $440 for weapons? Yeah, you had 42020 or $430. $445. Okay, but he's showing weakness. $465. Wow. You can have it. Okay.
Starting point is 01:13:49 All right. Can I tell you something? This was smart. Thanks. Past drafts or auctions have taught us that we should really, we should spend the money on what we care about. And you know what? I'm not going to lie.
Starting point is 01:14:02 I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. You can have it. Okay. All right. Can I tell you something? This was smart Thanks past dress or auctions have taught us that we should really we should spend the money I mean, you know what I've gotten I've done before is we're like I'm like, I'm just gonna equally distribute $50 across five movies. So I'm happy. I'm really happy with the two films I could have used a little more help from you. But Personally, how so we'll get there when we get there, but it's okay. I support you.
Starting point is 01:14:26 I needed you to take out some cash flow from him, but it's fine. It's fine. Oh, like push up Avatar more? No, I needed... If he only had $300 left, I would be in a better spot. Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah. But it's okay. Yeah. Is it my turn to pick a film?
Starting point is 01:14:43 I believe it is. I really want to see this movie. I do not think it's a good movie for this game Okay Which is not it not a demerit and it's a Christmas point about are we leaning too much into the box office? To suggest quality or something. This movie is the perfect example of probably will not almost certainly will not cross a hundred million dollars domestically Could be wrong, but probably not We'll not have an 85 Metacritic score because it's horror and Very low likelihood of Oscars now if it gets any of those three things that probably means it's like fucking amazing right if it goes over 100 million or over 85 or it gets at least one Oscar nomination that will mean You know, we have a new M. Night Shyamalan
Starting point is 01:15:25 on our hands, which would be phenomenal. I would love that. So we'll see. But nevertheless, we'll do two hours locked in on the movie in August. Is it my turn to pick a film? It is. I'm going to grab, or I'm going to nominate, is this thing on?
Starting point is 01:15:41 OK. Is this going to come out this year? They say, Wikipedia says that Fox Searchlight is eyeing a fall release. We have not heard Hider hair nor seen a still from it. Bradley Cooper's James L. Brooks homage. It sounds like it's about a divorcing couple or a couple whose marriage is falling apart.
Starting point is 01:16:03 And the man, the husband played by Will Arnett gets super into the New York City comedy scene. Features a bunch of supporting turns from contemporary New York City based comedians like Jordan Jensen, Chloe Radcliffe, Laura Dern is in this. Bradley Cooper is playing a supporting role and directed it and wrote it with Will Arnett, right? Yes. This sounds like his punchline. That's exactly what I have in my doc! Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:16:31 That's beautiful. Tom Hanks, Sally Fields, dramedy. That I would say is now underrated. Was eagerly anticipated, considered a huge disappointment, and now is kind of an interesting character study. Brad Cooper, I think a damn good filmmaker. And is a really interesting left turn after Maestro. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:51 Yeah. Cause he could keep making these sort of great men movies until he finally gets his Oscars. So, okay. How do you know this is in a different type of... He's a broken man. Sure. Who's trying to laugh his way through it.
Starting point is 01:17:03 Yeah, maybe he's going to find his greatness. What do you think would be your biggest, like your most unexpected new hobby, where you, God forbid, to get divorced? That's an incredible question. I mean, don't you kind of, I feel like I'm... Like WNBA? You mean like not playing, but like being really into it?
Starting point is 01:17:24 You should become a WNBA? You mean like not playing, but like being really into it? You should become a WNBA ref. I mean, the thing is, is that my sister-in-law, Ruthie, our beloved Ruthie, is like a huge liberty fan. Season ticket holder, right? Yeah, season ticket holder. So in the divorce, if it's an ugly one, I kind of feel like- You get Ruthie? No, no, I think that the Barons get the WNBA. It's kind of what I think, you know?
Starting point is 01:17:47 Um, I mean, I could be wrong. WNBA is gonna go crazy in my house. It's gonna go crazy. Yeah. I do feel like I'm in a phase of life where I'm already... It's like I'm doing the divorce hobbies without the divorce. Don't you think? You don't think so?
Starting point is 01:18:03 Skincare? What are you talking about? No, I... Oh, no, I don't you think? You don't think so? You're like, is this skincare? Like what are you talking about? No, I mean not. Oh no, I don't mean that. I don't mean those extrovert things. Gotta be careful with that, yeah. Yeah, no, just to be clear. Carefully navigate our frame. We are good, just you and me.
Starting point is 01:18:18 Okay, no, I'm more meant like. I'm gonna really get into polyamory, you know? No, I haven't told you about my, like, infrared box workout puff. Yes, you have. Yeah, see, so that sort of thing. Burn, yeah. Well, I don't know for ads, you know. But, uh... Did you put a dollar amount on Is This Thing On?
Starting point is 01:18:34 50 bucks. Okay. I don't know whether it would be stand-up comedy, but maybe I could get into a performance space, you know? I would pay, honestly, no less than $10,000 to watch you do stand-up comedy, but maybe I could get into a performance space, you know? I would pay, honestly, no less than $10,000 to watch you do stand-up comedy. You doing crowd work would cause an actual civil disturbance. The first time you got heckled, your fucking head would explode.
Starting point is 01:19:08 I would, like like charge the crowd. It would be like a reversible show. You're right. Don't let me fucking walk out of here with Bradley Cooper's follow up to Maestro. I'll say 60 bucks. Did you see Maestro? Yeah. Did you? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:20 We never discussed it. I thought it was maybe an Avatar situation. Everyone assumed you'd seen it. I'll do 65. I think I've been pretty open about my skepticism of the Navi tale. This is not, like, new. But I am now frustrated, and I didn't really
Starting point is 01:19:35 appreciate the shots of Nolan. I thought, like, that was honestly poor form. Make your own fucking movie. Let's see, let's try to, like, yeah. Wow. Wow, you have really thrown down the gauntlet on Bing Jim. Former guest of this show. One of my favorite filmmakers,
Starting point is 01:19:50 up until he started making imaginary underwater movies. Do you like Titanic? I thought it was pretty good. I thought it was pretty good. It's a long way to get to that sink and ship. You know what I mean? You gotta deal with a lot of stuff. You learn a lot, you know? I knew it.
Starting point is 01:20:06 I inherently understood the challenges of the Irish. OK. How do you feel about class at that time? Yeah. Do you think we had it right? What about art? Oh, like him drawing her? Well, no.
Starting point is 01:20:19 She was a collective, you know? But Billy Zane didn't understand. That's right. You dedicated that to memory. He was like, who is this Picasso? You're drawing her. She's making a return. Pay Me Like One of Your French Girls is one of the great memes.
Starting point is 01:20:30 Yeah. You know. Yeah. That's how I feel about VJ Edgecombe painting him in score 28 in Summer League. Where are we? Amanda has $65 on Is This Thing On. So Searchlight does not really have a major Oscar contender
Starting point is 01:20:47 this year, other than this movie, if they decide to put it out. Except maybe, I don't think this is gonna happen, but the new Martin McDonough movie is, I think the script is done. It may have started shooting, I can't really tell. It's called Wild Horse Nine, and the cast is Sam Rockwell, Malkovich,
Starting point is 01:21:08 Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey, and Tom Waits. Geez, is he going back on his Seven Psychopaths? It's a thriller, it's not a comedy. Cool. 70 bucks. What's up with the James L. Brooks movie? Is that ever coming out? December, Ella McKay. A. K.
Starting point is 01:21:26 Hey. Yeah. Okay. That's 20th century studios. Oh, okay. Not Searchlight. Even though it feels like a Searchlight movie. I really enjoy the two movies that Cooper directed.
Starting point is 01:21:42 Me too. I do as well. I think my show was like flawed, but like such a fascinating directed. Me too. I think Maestro was like flawed, but like such a fascinating choice. Me too. I really wish that that movie would be released on physical media. Okay.
Starting point is 01:21:53 That's a quite an... The first time that you've said that. You should go to his cheese stick restaurant and ask him. Maestro, yes. I was joking. Um, do you think that Bradley Cooper is into physical media? I think he's into collecting stuff.
Starting point is 01:22:06 Okay. So I think he would get it. All right. Maestro was beautifully shot. It's very beautiful. You know what the standing ovation was for Maestro at Venice? Because it was during the strike, so... He couldn't be there.
Starting point is 01:22:20 He couldn't be there, so it was just Leonard Bernstein's children like conducting along for like six minutes while the credits rolled. It was pretty... That's cool. I mean, sure. I'm gonna let you have this. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:33 Fuck. Okay. I'm fucking killing this drama. You've got a streaming movie. You've got a horror movie for $500. It's gonna go beyond horror. You know this. You know in your bones that we've been waiting for a movie like this to jump out.
Starting point is 01:22:48 Undated Bradley Cooper standup comedy, dramedy starring Will Arnett, known box office hero. Okay, well call me next year. And mobile entrepreneur, you know? That's true. And successful podcast host. That's true. And his podcast host. That's true. And his performance in Arrested Development
Starting point is 01:23:09 is the funniest comedy performance of the century. So I have nothing bad to say about him. George Luth is the best character on TV in this century. Okay. Is it me? Yeah. Wait. Chris has to do another one, yeah. Hmm. I'm gonna do...
Starting point is 01:23:32 I'm gonna do... Now You See Me, Now You Don't, AKA NYSM3, which I think actually might be a sneaky big box office movie. Okay. Have you seen either of the first Now You See Me films? I have not. I have multiple times.
Starting point is 01:23:48 You have, yes. One of the great... I've seen clips, I think. Great plane franchises. Okay. If you are on a plane, you will find that the hours slip away watching NYSM. Okay. Close Up Magic.
Starting point is 01:24:02 Yeah. Illusions. Flat Twists. Okay. Close up magic. Yeah. Illusions. Flat twists. I'd like to read a message I received, a mention I received on X.com yesterday. It's from a man named David Corsero. Okay. Not Superman. Not Superman.
Starting point is 01:24:16 That's David Cornsweat, aka Cornsweeper, as I believe you dubbed him some years ago during the release of the film Twister. Twisters. David Corsaro says, anyone have at Sean Fantasy's email address? I'm trying to invite him to the Magic Castle in early August. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:24:32 I have not responded to this man. I am calling him out right here on this podcast. He is a magician who does close up magic and is performing at the Magic Castle. Will you take me? Since I just nominated, now you see me three? I certainly would. The Magic Castle, one of the most fun places in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 01:24:45 And I'm very interested in Now You See Me, colon Now You Don't. What are you bidding? $30. Well. Value pick. Will you catch up on these films? You want me to tell you?
Starting point is 01:24:57 When is it coming out again? It's August, right? It looks, when you watch this. Oh wow. And I mean this in a really... The sweetest way I could possibly say this, it seems like Jesse Eisenberg has had a brain transplant when he's in these movies.
Starting point is 01:25:14 Like, it is so unlike anything else he does. But he likes doing them, right? I think so. He loves doing them. This movie comes out November 14th. Oh, wow. It's right up against Wicked for Good and Zootopia 2. Okay. The cast, are you familiar with this?
Starting point is 01:25:29 Do you know the premise of this one? Well, I do know that Dave Franco is in it because of... I mean, I remember that, but his studio... He throws playing cards at people. Okay. What movie is that in where someone throws playing cards at people? That's what Gambit does. Channing Tatum, the X-Man. He powers them up. Maybe we're not allowed to talk about this movie yet.
Starting point is 01:25:49 Oh, yeah, no, in F1. Yeah, okay. I didn't know. They all blur together. Oh, like into a hat. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dave Franco plays Jack Wilder. I know, and he talks about it on his studio recap. Jesse Eisenberg plays J. Daniel Atlas. Danny Atlas. Daniel Atlas.
Starting point is 01:26:06 Danny Atlas. Danny Atlas. Kind of an homage to Danny Ocean. And then Woody Harrelson plays Merritt McKinney. And Isla Fisher is now... Isla Fisher has been in all of the films. Lizzie Kaplan was in... She was in two.
Starting point is 01:26:18 She was in two. She's the Kaplan-Vita Jones. The thing with this one is that there's new young magicians on their heels, and they are portrayed by future movie stars. Justice Smith, Ariana Greenblatt from Barbie, and Dominic Cessa. Oh, good for... Oh, I do remember that like film updates, which is like Dominic Cessa has joined the cast of...
Starting point is 01:26:42 Um, okay, so are they just magicians? Are they magicians who fight crime? Are they magicians who commit crimes? They commit crimes, but they're like Robin Hoods. They like rob a casino vault and then throw the cash to people. Okay. Uh, that's cool. Yeah. You know, okay, you have it right now for $30. Are you bidding on this? I'm not sure yet.
Starting point is 01:26:59 Okay. So Jack just disappeared. I thought that this was gonna be like a funnier bit, and now it's just like me having nice CVD. So, Jack just disappeared. I thought that this was going to be a funnier bit, and now it's just me having nice CGI tells. So you guys are going to go to Magic Castle together? I think that, well, we have been before. I went with you last time. It was very fun.
Starting point is 01:27:16 That was some years ago. I think it was very early. When you first moved? When you just moved here. So almost ten years ago. Uh, Ruben Fleischer directed this movie. He directed Jesse Eisenberg to great acclaim in Zombieland. Yes.
Starting point is 01:27:30 The first two are Louis Leterrier, right? Yes, and he has pivoted to Fast 11. Oh. Which is definitely happening. Is Ruffalo in MYSM 3? No, I don't think so. If he is, they're not revealing that. Oh, but that would be exciting.
Starting point is 01:27:45 I wonder if Melanie LaVon is coming back. She's a dynamite. Yeah. Rosamund Pike is the villain in this movie. Oh, shit. Are you sure you don't want to go to 35? This is her description. She needs this because they canceled her Wheel of Time money, you know?
Starting point is 01:28:02 She plays Veronica. How many letters is Zach written? Yeah. She, she. Yeah. Yassie Salick, also a fan I learned. So Zach. A Wheel of Time? Yeah, so Zach and Yassie are starting a letter writing campaign.
Starting point is 01:28:13 Yassie also came out as a very loud proponent of materialists. And she said she went to go see it because you compared it to Hal Hartley on the podcast. And she agreed. That many people have been like, shut the fuck up. You don't know what you're saying. But that's OK.
Starting point is 01:28:26 Rosamund Pike plays Veronica Vandervoeg, the main antagonist and matriarch of the Crime Syndicate. Oh, is it the Crime Syndicate that they work for? Or they are stealing from the Crime Syndicate to give money back to? In the trailer, she's holding a diamond. And she's like, but the diamond is safe.
Starting point is 01:28:43 And then Jesse Eisenberg goes like, poof. And then it shatters in her hands. It's a great moment. Fucking love movies, man. This is kind of firmly in the potential, like, Jurassic World Rebirth Zone, where it's like, it's fun, but it's kind of evil, you know? And like, maybe it shouldn't exist.
Starting point is 01:28:57 We'll see. Are you bidding on it? $35. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Are you going to bid on it? No, but I'm really enjoying learning about this. I kind of want to keep bidding, but I also don't have anything else to say about it.
Starting point is 01:29:11 I just want to say this is the best movie podcast. There are many movie podcasts, but only one of them will give you all of this. Sure. Okay. It's true. It's true. Uh, you're not going to take this. $36. You can have it. Okay. All right. That's good. I guess. Yeah. Okay. Okay. It's your turn. You have $700 left, Sean. I have such a normal draft this year.
Starting point is 01:29:39 Usually I have like $900. Yeah. You know? Yeah. Well, yeah. You went big on weapons and that that that was a move. For $1, I'll put Superman on the board. Okay. I really, I understand you're doing this from a strategy perspective because you think it'll do well box office, which in our other game I'm banking on, and you're open to superheroes and... What I said, I was talking with...
Starting point is 01:30:10 Rachel Brosnahan. ...with Chris and Andy Greenwald outside right before the recording. Great. And Andy said, have you seen it? I said no. And I said, on the one hand, I haven't loved what I've seen as we've discussed. Sure. I think the most recent trailer is by far the best one they put out, but the first two I really didn't like very much,
Starting point is 01:30:25 and we had kind of a weird experience watching them sell at a CinemaCon. However, there's pretty much not a James Gunn movie I don't like. Yeah. I like every movie he's ever made, frankly. So, if I don't like it, it will be surprising to me. Yeah. So, I guess, are you... You're still in the mix. I'm not gonna be bidding on this. I mean, I can bid on this.
Starting point is 01:30:46 I can save $5, but... Sure. You don't want your $2.64 going in that direction. No, I don't. Okay. I have another hero in mind. Oh, wow. Do you? Okay.
Starting point is 01:30:58 And Roof Man's off the board. Here is the thing. Is that I really don't like James Gunn movies. Like, I just really... And we all know that, I'm allergic to it. I know. But you hate me making a really strong strategic move. No, but I also have fears of you thinking it's funny and sticking me with it. So and then getting something that I really want.
Starting point is 01:31:19 But like I also know I should bid you up, but we all know that I just... It's win-win for me. I, you know, it's, that's great. Congratulations for you, I guess, whatever. I mean, the movie could be charitable and could bomb miserably. Yeah, but even if it bombs, it'll make a hundred million domestic.
Starting point is 01:31:40 Almost certainly. Yeah, it's gonna make a hundred million in the opening weekend. Sure, that, okay. What do you think it's missing? Why? I really don't, I don't want to bid on it. I know you want to like make me bid on it, but I just, I don't, I think it'll do well. I'll bid $50. You already have it for $5 right now. Don't bid yourself up. All right. Well, he's gonna bid. He was gonna bid six. I just can't see him get it for $6. $6. Okay. All right. I just can't see him get it for six dollars six dollars. Okay. All right Fifty dollars Because if I did get it, well, I mean that's good for me, right? It's gonna do exactly. That's the thing. Yeah, definitely $51
Starting point is 01:32:17 Okay Excited about predator badlands Uh, are you excited about Predator Badlands? I'm excited to talk to you about it as soon as it comes up on the board. Yeah. But we got to sort out the Superman situation first. I just, I don't know what it is, man. I don't know what it is. Are you big on James Gunn? I like the first Guardians.
Starting point is 01:32:37 Okay. I think, I think Sean likes them more than me. Yeah. Yeah. It's not, not, not a personal thing. Please don't, don't tweet at me James Gunn. Yeah, you really more Zack Snyder. That's what you're interested in.
Starting point is 01:32:51 I would say that Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead is my favorite film, either Zack Snyder or James Gunn. You know who wrote the screenplay of Dawn of the Dead? James Gunn? James Gunn. Maybe they should be like Garland and Boyle together. Stronger together. It's been it's been suggested in the past that that would have been the most useful way to pursue Superman which is to take Zack Snyder's
Starting point is 01:33:14 visual sensibility and let James Gunn write the screenplay for him. That didn't happen. They both had to get a crack at it. I would like to assume James Gunn writing 300 years. I was just thinking about like what would be better or worse for me? Would it be the two of them making Superman? Together? Yeah, together, or I'm subjected to all their different individual versions. $55, by the way. And then all their other projects.
Starting point is 01:33:41 $56. We're just going to go one. Did you see Guardians of the Galaxy 3? I mean you don't want this. You should just let me have it. Would you do that for me? Of course I would. Of course I would.
Starting point is 01:33:53 I gave you weapons. Okay, that's a good point. I'm not gonna get him up to like $500. I'm not expecting you to do anything. Okay. Yeah, you can let him have it for free. I guess Sean has an incredible value pick, but there's something a little bit like, congratulations. You know what? Hey, hey, hey.
Starting point is 01:34:08 You auctioned a movie coming out in four days. Hey, get him up to 61. Sixty-one... dollars. Okay, $62. She just wants to have more money than me. Yeah, thank you. Which is not really relevant anymore. Okay, thank you.
Starting point is 01:34:25 Congratulations. She's gotta make her money back rather than she's been kicked off the set of Steel Bagdoll. I'll take it for 62. Okay. Well, I think I've done my job box office wise. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:42 And now onto quality. So, Amanda, you have two in a row, right? Yes. box office wise. Yeah. And now onto quality. Okay. So, Amanda, you have two in a row, right? Yes. Oh, I have two in a row? Yes. Okay. Because I'm in the middle.
Starting point is 01:34:53 Okay. What am I going to do here? What will I do here? The thing is, is that I don't care about box office that much because I'm just, I'm going for me, you know? Do you think Superman will get any Oscar nominations? No. No, sorry. I'm just curious. I don't.
Starting point is 01:35:15 Yeah. Visual effects? Not based on what I've seen so far. Let's see. All right, Christopher has 264. And the base is not like good. What about the Kaiju? Okay.
Starting point is 01:35:33 Is that good? You know what the Kaiju is? I mean, I think I know what a Kaiju is, generally speaking. Is there one in the movie? There is, yeah. That's cool. I feel like we've been here for like three hours.
Starting point is 01:35:45 Yeah, no. I mean, let's do it. Jay Kelly. Let's go. Let's do it. Jay Kelly. What's this movie about? It's about a guy.
Starting point is 01:35:53 George Clooney is a believe in aging movie star. And some other stuff happens and Adam Sandler is also in it. I don't want to know anymore. I just want to go see it. Does Adam Sandler play his brother? I think so. I believe so, yeah. Yeah. It is written by Noe Baumbach and Emily Mortimer.
Starting point is 01:36:07 Oh, wow. And it is directed by Noah Baumbach. Yeah, OK. So $100. This is, I think, his fourth movie for Netflix now. Yeah. He's at $100. I did.
Starting point is 01:36:18 Yes, this is also shot by Lena Sandgren. I believe it's his first film. Did he shoot White Noise? He may have shot White Noise as well. He also notably shot La La Land and Babylon and First Man. And he shot the upcoming Weathering Heights, La La Crawley, right. Yeah, so this is his first time working with Bondback, which is really interesting. I'll say 150. Is Emily Mortimer in this film?
Starting point is 01:36:52 I don't think so, but I believe her son with Alessandro Navola was in White Noise. Yes. Right? Sam? He was in White Lotus. White Lotus, yeah. Good actor. It's, according to Wikipedia, she is listed in the cast. But...
Starting point is 01:37:10 The cast is incredible. Yeah. It's Clooney and Samler. Billy Crudup, Laura Dern, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohr-Walker, Josh Hamilton, of course, Greta Gerwig,
Starting point is 01:37:24 Isla Fisher, Lars Ettinger. Kyle Soller from fucking Andor. Yes, him too. If you know, you know. Him too. How about that? 225.
Starting point is 01:37:36 250. Who ended up with White Noise last time? The movie I like. I like it also. I, I don't remember. You can't psych me out of this. I thought... What do you mean, psych you out of it? I don't know. You're just like,
Starting point is 01:37:51 you're gonna bring up White Noise and you're gonna say critically, we're not so mixed. You gotta podcast. This is what we're here to podcast. That is true, but I'm just, my podcasting is being like, no, you will not psych me out of this.
Starting point is 01:38:03 Okay. Um, I'm excited of this. OK. I am excited about J. Kelly. I'm excited about George Clooney. Me too. I'm excited about Adam Sandler. 263. Ooh, I love it.
Starting point is 01:38:15 You flew back for the live taping of Good Night and Good Luck. How was that? Um. Ha ha ha. Did you enjoy yourself? I didn't. I didn't see either the stage version or the live TV version. I felt a theater-sized hole in my life this year, actually.
Starting point is 01:38:33 What are your feelings on Edward Amaro? He did his best, but it doesn't seem like it's going to work out for us. Interesting. 270. 280. Now I just sit on the sidelines. Yeah, sorry. Early speculation is Sandman big time Oscar campaign coming. Wonderful.
Starting point is 01:38:59 Is it time for Sandman? Yes. Do you think if Sandman didn't make super dumb movies other than these Oscar bait movies? Like if he can can you find like a middle ground between like I have a remote control that controls my wife and Jay Kelly That like it would be cool. He did he does those Did funny people that was a long time ago and that was also like slyly like trying to get an Oscar too, right? I Don't know about that He just did hustle That was a long time ago, and that was also like Slyly like trying to get an Oscar too, right? I don't know about that. Um, he just did Hustle.
Starting point is 01:39:33 I disagree. I think he's actually one of the best purveyors of this. I mean, I'm obsessed with Sandler, so I thought about this a lot. But I think one of the best things about him is he has three modes. He can do your Happy Madison dumb comedy, and there's a huge audience for those movies. He can do this kind of like mid-level dramedy. Like he did Spanglish years ago. You know, like he does these kinds of movies all the time. I remember Spanglish. Not a film I like at all, but he did it.
Starting point is 01:39:56 And he also can do Uncut Gems and movies with Bombeck. So I think he's like legitimately one of the most versatile movie stars of all time. That's my piece. I don't disagree. You know, George Clooney cannot do Happy Gilmore. He simply cannot do it. That's true.
Starting point is 01:40:11 He's not that kind of funny. But Adam Sandler can do Adam Sandler. I don't know. I think George Clooney in Oh Brother, the idiot, Cohen Clooney could do something approaching the Sandler companies? Yeah, I think it's sort of like a, it's a Jon Hamm thing where you're like too handsome to be that funny, even though you really wanna be funny. Okay, he's funny for a handsome guy.
Starting point is 01:40:34 And he definitely appreciates the other people being funny, you know? I think he's a good laugher, but you know. I'll say 290. 300. You know who else needs to have in its time is Noah? Is Noah Baumbach. It's really Noah's time. We gotta acknowledge.
Starting point is 01:40:52 One of the greats. How do you feel about the two of them, Noah and Greta, just working for Big Ted? I don't love it. Yeah. I don't love it. I'd like to go see his movies in movie theaters. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:07 He can't get himself like an Indian paintbrush deal, like where just like some rich guy is like, here's 40 mil. You can go make a movie. He's never made a movie that has made very much money in theaters. So in some ways, when Netflix's whole thing was we take on the Noah Bonbacks and the Bong Choo Hoes and make their movies, that was an amazing moment in movie history that will never be replicated. Yeah. Apple did a very small version of it
Starting point is 01:41:30 and that's kind of over too. I'll say 310. I'm really into this movie. It's a good movie for this show. Yeah, this is a good movie for us. 320. This is another, I'm hopeful that it will be at Venice.
Starting point is 01:41:45 I think it's's pretty good bet. Yeah, because Netflix does, the Venice Film Festival likes Netflix and Netflix likes to show up there. So that would be... 330? Sort of 340. The main issue is like the scheduling, you know,
Starting point is 01:41:59 because I really, last time they scheduled Sofia Coppola's Priscilla for after I was supposed to leave. Mm-hmm. Why not extend your trip? I did extend it, but then I will have to extend it again, and I don't know, you know. Is it because you have to go straight to the set of Steel Necklace 2,
Starting point is 01:42:19 and you want to see your family march between? Right, right, right. Yeah. Understand. It's tough. Uh... Three... 350? 360. 370?
Starting point is 01:42:36 380. Yeah, the cursor that can't keep up with us. Seems like a lot. Sure. You just want to get what you want to get. That is true. In the option and in life. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:53 How's it going? Not good. Are you achieving what you want? Just not at all good. You're not getting what you want. But yeah, you know. But tonight, when I put that honey mask on, you know. Then you'll feel you are completing it. This honey mask on, you know? Then you'll feel, you are complaining.
Starting point is 01:43:05 This honey mask completes me. I figure out the plot holes and then just like that. 390. 400. My, my, my. Is there anything else we would go up against one another for the rest of this auction? Sierra's got only one slot left.
Starting point is 01:43:22 So we're gonna, it's gonna be me and you. I can see that's right. I can see that's one of the things that would bring you two together. Yeah, got only one slot left, so it's going to be me and you. I can see that's right. All the way down the line. I can see that's why things would bring you two together. Yeah, but like the thing is, and it's a little ugly, which is in the theme of this podcast, but bomb back is what brings us together, you know? And so now we are pitted against each other. Over the theme. For the things that we love most.
Starting point is 01:43:40 I think it's the single biggest meeting point of our taste. Probably? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. God. That and Big Tom Cruise action movies. Yeah, I guess that's true. We've been let down by one of those already this year.
Starting point is 01:43:55 But we're there together. 410? 420. I don't have a weed joke to make. Sorry. I got some edibles. Not a weed joke to make. Sorry. I got some... Not a weed person. No, I'm not.
Starting point is 01:44:08 And I got some edibles that were recommended for sleep and they didn't, it didn't work for me. And also I just don't like how they taste. They're like blackberry, but you know, they have strong weed aftertastes. I don't like the notes. No thanks. It is weed after all. Yeah, I know. It's not... Not a weed guy. They just killed the goose, man. They shouldn't have done...
Starting point is 01:44:31 You had a weed take. A big weed take? I just think what we think of as weed now is not what weed was. You mean the oregano that you smoked in 1996? Honestly, I was better for it. I was better off smoking like some ground up herbs and spices in Washington Square Park than I was getting my frontal lobe dissolved by like whatever's in the stuff. I think- And I really resent
Starting point is 01:44:55 their real estate footprint. Yeah, that shit is insane. The real estate footprint of the weed industry. I see. I don't really have a comment. I... Why are there more weed stores than DVD stores? Well, it's market capitalism, right?
Starting point is 01:45:14 I mean, what do people want? How are they spending their time? Well, I think that they should spend their time with DVDs. As you know, I agree. I just received a box full of 50 DVDs. I don't know why they can't just do both. The best thing is ever. Have a weed store where it's like, here's a gummy,
Starting point is 01:45:25 and then here's the perfect movie to go with that gummy. Yeah, there you go. I mean, I don't think movies are best experienced on gummies. Why are you turning your back on his innovation, you know? No one's ever thought about taking a gummy and watching a movie before. Selling them together. Yeah, that could be cool. Okay.
Starting point is 01:45:45 That could be cool. Should we call the local video stores? You don't seem that excited about it. Well, most of the time, I don't want to watch a movie. What if I got stoned and sold your DVDs on the street? Also, another thing is that, I think given the strength of weed now, I should be able to sell ludes, like, in a store, you know?
Starting point is 01:46:05 Yeah. I know what you're saying, but I don't agree with it. I'll let you have it for $420. Thank you so much. That's really nice of you. Chris's Quaaludes. ["QUAILUDES"] Quaalude for many occasions. The branding is right there. It's all Leo's faces from Wolf of Wall Street. That would be really good.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Okay, you've got to put another movie up. Yeah. All Leo's faces from Wolf of Wall Street. That would be really good. Okay, you gotta put another movie up. Yeah, all right, Deliver Me From Nowhere. Wow. Five bucks. Wow. Let's go. I will not be bidding on this movie.
Starting point is 01:46:34 Oh, okay. 10 bucks. Okay. 15? 50. I don't know, I mean, I guess. How are you feeling? How am I feeling? About him. About Jeremy as Bruce.
Starting point is 01:46:50 I mean, just pick a menu. Just pick one and just stick with it. The bear? You know? Just... You gotta... I know... Charlie Parker didn't play the same notes every day. I just can't believe how long we've been talking about. Yeah. You know?
Starting point is 01:47:06 Just, he, what, and the components and just pick one. So that's how I feel, but I think that when he's not sitting in like the weirdly lit kitchen being like, I need more ingredients because I have demons, he's really good. He was really good in the wedding episode. Do you believe him as Bruce Springsteen? Uh, I don't really... Sure.
Starting point is 01:47:29 So much so that you would go over $50? Sure. $53. Let's go. You want to keep talking about it? You're not even bidding, because you have a moral opposition to musical biopics. I'm just not that excited about this movie. Okay. I haven't... It's been a long time
Starting point is 01:47:44 since I've seen a Scott Cooper movie I like. Yeah. I think Jeremy Allen-Wyatt's a good actor. I'm not sure if I'm sold on him at this level. Okay. And I will go, I will walk into the ocean for Jeremy Strong. I will support him in anything he does.
Starting point is 01:47:57 I believe he is one of the most important people alive. And I will not move off of that opinion. And so that alone, I might like this, but, you know, I just think these kinds of movies stink. How do you pay $638? I've got three slots left. Like, I got Superman for 62 bucks. I actually don't know, like, is this movie gonna get
Starting point is 01:48:22 nominated for Best Picture or is it gonna get, like, absolutely destroyed by critics? I have no clue. Did you guys see the lunch in Sardinia that was Scott Cooper, Jeremy Strong, Bradley Cooper? Nope. Someone else was there? They were just all... Someone else who was not as...
Starting point is 01:48:41 related to this movie, but makes movies. That's Blue Zone right there. Yeah. That's good Zone right there. Yeah. It's good olive oil. Would you get on a rocket ship and go into space with those guys? Yeah, that would be an amazing movie too. What was the name of that trip?
Starting point is 01:48:55 I honestly, if Blue, the Blue Origin. Blue Origin, thank you. If they'd had you on that trip, not the women because you can't be a girl boss, but like- Just to break up the self-seriousness. If they had you on the dude version of that trip, not the women, because you can't be a girl boss, but like... Just to break up the self-seriousness. If they had you on the dude version of that trip, everyone would love it. Girl origin? Yeah, like, girl origin, you'd kill it. And I think you'd look good in the blue suit too.
Starting point is 01:49:17 What would happen though if they martianed me and I had to grow potatoes out of my own feces? And those Irish jeans, though. As long as someone is videotaping it, then we have, you know, a box office... It would be tough to miss the Odyssey if I got lost in space. This episode is dedicated to CR, who is in oblivion right now. Chris, we're so happy we got to see the Odyssey. He's sending us a little... He's sending us robot messages every Mars solar day.
Starting point is 01:49:47 We can put you right here on the big screen. Can I make a wish it? And do you think like if I was like, I have like two hours of oxygen left, Christopher Nolan, please beam the Odyssey into my fucking suit. So I can see. I think the runtime is going to be a little longer than two hours. Also the format. That's a good point. He, the format would not be appropriate.
Starting point is 01:50:05 He wouldn't want it on his phone. What if he could broadcast it against the moon? You know what I mean? Yeah, that would be the widest of screens. But would the sound be synced properly? But then you'd have to wait for a full, you know... What is it? What's like a... How does the moon wax and wait on Mars?
Starting point is 01:50:21 Oh, I'm in Mars. I thought he was just going up and doing a quick lap. C.R.'s got this for 60 bucks. Well, that's the end of his slate. Yeah. It's okay. I could still chime in, talk a little bit. I have to nominate something. That's true. I'd watch you two fight over it.
Starting point is 01:50:34 Yeah. You're up, big dog. I'm up. Yeah. Five slots left. Big dog. I like that. I accept.
Starting point is 01:50:45 I accept, I accept. It does really feel like we've been here forever. It's been a long pod. I wonder if it's cool for people listening. They're like, this is this is this is good. I think so. I think that we've got a lot of ideas. The moon wax and wane on Mars. I guess it's not Mars's moon.
Starting point is 01:51:05 Does Mars have moons? I think if I was on Mars, that would be a much bigger story than the Odyssey because I would be the first man on Mars. Mars has two moons, which I guess are the moons that carry its chariots. Now the horses, you know, now that I think about it. Okay, please sit.
Starting point is 01:51:19 Chloe Zhao's Hamnet, 50 bucks. Oh, okay. Oh, I am. This could get contentious. Yeah, yeah. 50 bucks. Oh, okay. Oh. It's gonna get contentious. Yeah. Yeah. Did you read this? No. And I won't.
Starting point is 01:51:30 Okay. Did I spoil it for you? No. I know the premise. Adapted from the Maggie O'Farrell novel, which I thought was absolutely sensational. I mean, 75 for sure. I'll say 100. Um, this is...
Starting point is 01:51:51 actually quite different from anything Chloe Zhao has ever done before. True. Her first three films are, if not improvised, very naturalistic. And the story is very threadbare. Improvised naturalistic film. And Eternals is... Eternals is an improvised naturalistic film. And Eternals is what Eternals is. This is meant to be like a return to form kind of a thing, but also, you know, Period Peace adaptation
Starting point is 01:52:15 is not something she's ever experimented with. I'm still a believer in her talent. I am as well. I really love Nomadland. I said it then and I say it now. I really, really like that movie. I think it's very insightful emotionally. Also, you know, I know that period piece does historically mean very mannered, of course it is.
Starting point is 01:52:33 Not necessarily, though. But it doesn't have to be. And it would make sense with this story for it to be... Like, you know, it's a period piece that kind of comes, jumps right off the page? What? Valkyrie. Yeah, there you go. Yes, it sure does.
Starting point is 01:52:46 Jumps right off the page and right into your laptop. Where you post memes on 8chan. Uh, 125. I'll say 150. The other reason for this, to be excited about this movie, obviously, Paul Meskell playing William Shakespeare and Jesse Buckley playing Agnes Shakespeare. Yes.
Starting point is 01:53:04 Jesse Buckley, one of my favorites. Paul Mescal, kind of in need of a comeback. I'm fucking Glastonbury for that guy though. I'm unreal. Smoking darts with Gracie. Yeah. Gracie Abrams, are you a fan? No, but they're obviously, they're staying together.
Starting point is 01:53:19 You think so? You think for good. If I had to bet, if I was a betting man, they've gone past the point where it would just be convenient for like pop, paparazzi points. So you think wedding bells for them? Maybe. But if I had to bet, if I was a betting man, they've gone past the point where it would just be convenient for like pop, paparazzi points. So you think wedding bells for them? Maybe. Interesting. Joe Allen plays Bartholomew in this film.
Starting point is 01:53:32 Okay, 175. Joe Allen has good taste in films. I don't remember or know who Bartholomew is, but that's fine. Emily Watson plays Mary. Emily Watson, wonderful actress. Agnes is a great name. It was on the list.
Starting point is 01:53:50 It was, that's really nice. I think it would have been on the list for us as well, though we know an Agnes, like a similar generation Agnes, so I wouldn't want to steal that one. Like how many names, how many, Steve's do you guys know? It's really... Yeah, no, there are no Chris's. Dave.
Starting point is 01:54:10 There are no... Sean. No, I've done this bit before with other parents. It's just Michael. There are no Michaels. Like, that preschool tour will just blow your hair back. You just look at those... Jonathan. You just don't meet a Jonathan anymore.
Starting point is 01:54:24 You're more likely to meet a George than a Jonathan in twenty twenty five. It's just going to be so fucking crazy when it's like twenty sixty and it's like President Ryder. Yeah. Long fellow. Yeah. Yeah. They're all the names
Starting point is 01:54:38 of the kids and Alice. I mean, we live in Los Angeles, the East side of Los Angeles. So, yeah, the names are it's a bubble. Two hundred. the East side of Los Angeles. So, yeah, the names are... It's a bubble. It's a bubble. Uh... 200. I mean, 210, sure. 211.
Starting point is 01:54:55 Okay, 212. 213. 214. Chunk it up. 215. You want to do it? Like, do you, I mean... I think this is gonna be... one of the big... films of the year.
Starting point is 01:55:11 I think it's gonna be one of the Oscar heavyweights. Okay. Two... 18? Uh... I'll take it for 219. Okay, there you go. There you go.
Starting point is 01:55:29 Was that fun? I feel good about it. Okay. I needed an Oscar contender. Proud owner. Yeah. Great book, if you haven't read it. Upsetting, but great.
Starting point is 01:55:42 This film was produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg. Mm, okay. Well, good job. Very interesting. I wonder if they were both attached to direct at a certain point. Oh, and then they were like, I won't, but I'll lend my name to it. Seems possible. We shall see.
Starting point is 01:55:57 Okay. Chris, you've got to put a movie up. I can't bid on it, but I can watch you to talk about Caught Stealing, Darren Aronofsky's comic thriller. So what are the rules here? I don't know. We've never been in this situation before. Neither of you want it? I can throw up another one. I think we can just pass and move on to another.
Starting point is 01:56:22 I really did not like the trailer for this movie. OK. I believe in the members of the cast, like a lot. Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith, Regina King. Like, sure, Bad Bunny, why not? Yeah. Once again, I'm reading from Google AI, so if that's wrong, blame AI, like everything else.
Starting point is 01:56:43 You could click one button just to confirm. I know, but, you know, suddenly's suddenly, like, I had the mic. This is what has happened to America. It's true. This is what has happened to the minds of consumers. Yeah, it's bad. It's a time crunch thing.
Starting point is 01:56:54 Uh, I don't even. It's not an issue on this episode. But I can see Jack, like, holding his head in despair. Your lighting's great today. And we have, like, a, it's like, the corner of the TV is over your forehead. But then I see him being like, No one's bidding. No one's bidding. Do you want me to put up a different film? Or a second film now?
Starting point is 01:57:13 I enjoy Darren Aronofsky's work, but this feels a little low rent for him in my opinion. I think it looks cool. And Austin Butler has got my vote. Same. President Butler. Speaking of presidents, House of Dynamite. That's the big O? Yeah, this is interesting. Okay. Have seen Narey and image from this film. Yeah. It's got, I believe an October release date.
Starting point is 01:57:35 Has Idris Elba been in the White House too much? Just in his career? Yeah, to be believable in this House of Dynamite scenario, in which I assume he is the president. He's first billed in the movie, so that seems logical. Or maybe he's like, you know. But maybe it's one of those where the president is just in another room. Is Greta Lee the president? Is Tracy Letts the president?
Starting point is 01:57:59 That would be great. Tracy, I do not believe Tracy is the president of this film. I could be wrong. I've talked to him about this movie, but not what he's doing in the movie. The log line is a group of White House officials scrambled to deal with an incoming missile attack on the US. I don't know for sure, but I think it might even be a TikTok,
Starting point is 01:58:17 specifically of what happens when it is announced. Not TikTok. CKs. Yes, CKs, not the... Catherine Bigelow did not direct a TikTok for Netflix, although... We do have to clarify in 2025. Maybe she should have done that. No, like a little countdown from the moment when the missile is fired at the United States
Starting point is 01:58:38 to what transpires, which is just a great premise for a movie. Failsafe is a very similar premise to the Lumet movie. So Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Greta Lee, Renee Elise Goldsberry. That's a lot of Broadway talent right there. A lot of stage actors in the White House. I'll bid... 10 bucks?
Starting point is 01:59:04 25. How do you feel about another year of Bigelow Big Jim going toe to toe? Historically it's been fruitful. It has. It has. That seems good. 50 bucks? Kind of pumped about this. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 01:59:19 White House thriller. She hasn't directed anything since Detroit. Listen, I'm very 60. 75? This could just become a movie that doesn't exist. I haven't directed anything since Detroit. I'm very 60. Seventy-five? This could just become a movie that doesn't exist. Like, it's possible that it comes out and people are like, okay, and then they move on. Or it's a Catherine Bigelow movie?
Starting point is 01:59:33 It could be like Triple Frontier, which she was supposed to direct. But it could be like one of those movies where it's like, man, I'm so pumped, and then it comes out on Netflix and everybody's like, cool. But it never died in our memory. Yeah, that's a good one. Remember our personal rewatchables?
Starting point is 01:59:45 Big size Twixes. I do remember Yeah, that's a good one. Remember our personal rewatchables? Big size twixes. I do remember that. That was a great day. Uh, 80? That was a great day. 85. 90? I feel like the awareness of this in the public at large is low.
Starting point is 02:00:03 True. I would say that for a lot of the public at large is low. True. I would say that for a lot of these films. Yeah. Yeah. 95? I mean, what am I going to do if I don't do this? This would give me Big Jim, James Gunn, Chloe Zhao, and Catherine Bigelow.
Starting point is 02:00:19 If I could get this film. That would be solid. A hundred dollars because I believe in women filmmakers. film? That would be solid. $100 because I believe in women filmmakers. I'm not even making this about gender. I don't see gender. I only see a missile coming right out. What I see is a thriller, a pulse pounding thriller from one of our great thriller makers. All right. 105. Have you seen Point Break recently? Yeah. It's really good. 110.
Starting point is 02:00:44 Wow. that's a film 115 are we are like are we just gonna do this all the way one 120 I don't know Jack is so he's like so hungry he's not she's so bad yeah oh yeah can we get we throw string cheeseeses in here? Will that like interrupt with the like, let's run it right now. Oh, string. Okay. Yeah. 120. I feel good about that. 130. Okay. 135. 140. I'm sorry, Chris. This is just, this is important.
Starting point is 02:01:27 I agree. I wasn't yawning in anger. $150? Big or low? $155? Like, who's saying no? Not me. Would you have bid on this, Chris? Yeah. This is going to be sick. You got now you see me, Nate. That was more like, I thought I was gonna throw that out there. There was gonna be some laughs.
Starting point is 02:01:52 I didn't really think I was gonna wind up there. Here we go. Nice. One, two. Okay, thank you. Sick. All right. Wow, string cheese break.
Starting point is 02:02:01 A bunch of people eating cheese on video. People love it when cheese is in someone's mouth and then they talk. Wow, string cheese break. A bunch of people eating cheese on video. People love it when cheese is in someone's mouth and then they talk. People love to hear that. So this is cold, so that is bad for you lactose-wise. I don't know how much lactose is in this, to be quite honest. I do have some mozzarella allowances. Did you get that piece of information?
Starting point is 02:02:17 Where'd you get that from? From Sean. So I don't really... Cold cheese is bad for you? Cooked cheese, if you're lactose intolerant, is okay. There's like gradations. Oh. 155. I'm not officially diagnosed. 165.
Starting point is 02:02:29 You think Catherine Biccolo eats string cheese on set? No. What do you think Catherine Biccolo eats on set? 170. Hot tea. She vapes. She does? You know that? No, but it seems like something that she would do. She probably has like a protein bowl. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:02:42 Like an acai. Acai. Is acai... Is it protein? I don't think that Yeah. What's in the protein bowl? Like an acai. Acai. Is acai, is it protein? I don't think that is. It's super food, but. 175. 180. I've never had an acai bowl.
Starting point is 02:02:54 There's too many blueberries in it for me. Yeah. Like I don't, it's just not a food set. You can have it for 180. Sick. Okay. It's a good get. Thanks.
Starting point is 02:03:04 I'm excited. It's also a Netflix movie. Well, whatever. I don't care. As I said, I exist outside of box office. I exist for the cinema. That's what I exist for, which is why I acquired Superman. Cool. You put another movie up? Me? I think so. No, CR. Well, I put up caught stealing. Oh yeah. And I put up pause to dynamite. Okay, so then it'll be me. Yeah. Hmm. How do I thread the needle here? I don't know, Sean. I'll put, it was just an accident for $1 on the board. Jeffar Panahee's, palm door winning, new film, acquired by Neon.
Starting point is 02:03:47 And what is the release date? It does, it's October, right? October. Yeah. Certainly one of the big awards contenders of the year, Iranian thriller. I mean, it's not gonna do box office, but Oscar wise. I mean, I'll do 40. If you want it, you can take it from me. I'll take it for 41.
Starting point is 02:04:08 Okay. Feel like I need to pump up those Oscar numbers and that Metacritic score. Gotta get those numbers up. What is Jafar Panahi's history on Metacritic? Pump up those numbers. I'll get my quant on this. So he has a career average score of 82 on Metacritic.
Starting point is 02:04:28 Okay, well, you're just, you're a wizard of strategy, Sean. And we're lucky to be in the option for you. 93? It was just an accident. Currently sits at 87. What? You won Metacritic. Yeah. Congratulations. So you pull it apart. I don't always, but right now I am.
Starting point is 02:04:48 What's up with, um... if I have money left over? Oh, I have money left over. No, I know, but like, where does it go? Does it go away? Do I want to spend everything? It goes right into the budget of Steel Magnolias, too. Yeah. But does it go back to me?
Starting point is 02:05:03 No, under no circumstances. So you've got $40 left. Okay. But does it go back to me? No. Under no circumstances. So you've got $40 left. OK. I've got $378 left. Sure. Sure. So good luck to you on whatever it is that you want. No, I know exactly what I'm gonna do.
Starting point is 02:05:14 I'm not stressed at all. I just want to make sure I get the full title right. For $40, I'll take down NABBY, the grand finale. No. Let it go. This is valueless, though, because it will not cross $100 million. It's not too mean. It will not get any Oscar nominations.
Starting point is 02:05:26 I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. I will tell you this. Please stop pointing at me. What happened? What happened? Did this cook it? I will tell you what.
Starting point is 02:05:37 It's pure protein. Yeah. I had the protein boost. That's another one. You actually are now more channeling Margaret Thatcher, I would say, if I had to choose a female leader. The Iron Lady. The Iron Lady. I mean, listen, that's fine, except for my hair.
Starting point is 02:05:50 It's actually not fine. That's not cool. That's fine. No. Because of her policies. No. I'm down with Margaret Thatcher, down with Maggie. Have you seen that YouTube clip of the Irish lady?
Starting point is 02:06:00 Of course. That's one of the great ones. The first film. What? You just crashed out. What's one of the great ones. Um, the first film. You just crashed out. What's going on? The first Down Abbey film made like 98 million dollars. Has it continued its box office surge? No, but 2022 was a weird year at the box office and I have to tell you, Down Abbey, The Grand Tour,
Starting point is 02:06:25 or whatever the second one was called, was an excellent film. Yeah, it was titled Down Abbey, colon F1. There's nothing like getting two hours deep into a pod and having you on the verge of tears as you recall the box office performance of Down Abbey 2. Did you ever see Down Abbey 2?
Starting point is 02:06:41 No. So, Sybil, no, Sybil's dead. Sorry. Sybil's daughter... You cannot do this right now. ...inherits a mansion in France. Okay. Well, actually, I guess Lady Violet inherits it. That's Maggie Smith. She's still on the show?
Starting point is 02:06:58 Well, in Downton Abbey 2, she was. Downton Abbey 2, she was. Force Ghost Maggie Smith? But so then they all go to the south of France. Did you ever see Flight Plan? And the guy who is the, no, that's the Mel Gibson one, right? We do every episode together.
Starting point is 02:07:16 This is what it's like all the time. Like, Rome, what was his name? The guy from the bureau who was like the handler, who's not the main guy. Uh-huh, I don't remember, handler, who's not the main guy. Uh-huh. I don't, I don't remember. Honestly, long lost cousin. So down Abbey one made $198 million worldwide down Abbey to
Starting point is 02:07:35 made $92 million worldwide. Yeah. I, again, I don't care. As I said, when we started this, I'm doing this for me. Okay. And I am fucking psyched for Dan Mabby, the grand finale. I'm on the record as enjoying all of these movies.
Starting point is 02:07:52 Yeah. So, Lily James will be appearing again, as Lady Rose and Maclaur. Matthew Good is not available for one day to film. I guess he is being... He is listed in the cast. He is listed in the cast of the grand finale. And he's not Scottish in Department Q. He is listed in the cast of the grand finale.
Starting point is 02:08:05 And he's not Scottish in Department Q. He's an Englishman working in Edinburgh. Yeah. OK. No, he's not listed. I lied. He's not. It's too bad. He's not in the trailer. Do you really need a 50 ounce water if you're only going to drink three ounces of it?
Starting point is 02:08:22 Have you thought about that? It's true that my hydration goals have been stymied, stymied by my embrace of the free ice lot. Yeah. So I but I do because then you have to refill it as much. And this is this is your I can get anything I want for $378. Okay. Hmm. Can you guys vamp for a second?
Starting point is 02:08:49 Sure. There are some movies that I was like kind of considering throwing out there. Oh yeah, tell us. Because I don't think Sean's gonna throw any of these. Blue Moon, the Richard Linklater movie about Lawrence Hart and his night at Sardis with Ethan Hawke. Very excited about that.
Starting point is 02:09:02 Margaret Qualley, Andrew Scott, who apparently gives a wonderful performance in this film. And then a movie I would like to see with you. Yes. It's called Pressure, and it's directed by John Carney. And it's about a meteorologist who has to give the D-Day weather forecast. And it also stars Andrew Scott.
Starting point is 02:09:16 Wow. Yeah. Yes. Let's go. Yeah. And there's an American guy in it, but it's not Scoop McMary, but it was something where I was like, holy shit, there's an American guy, but it's not Scoop McMary, but it was something where I was like, holy shit, there's an American guy in this.
Starting point is 02:09:28 Pressure movie. I'm Googling it now. Well, no, that's about sea diving. But Matthew Good is apparently in the 2015 film Pressure, Pressure movie, Andrew Scott. The other one that I was really kind of fired up about, but I don't think Sean is gonna take, is Sacrifice, which is the new film from Romaine Garvis, who made Athena. And this is a movie. Gavras, yeah. What's that? Gavras, sorry.
Starting point is 02:09:54 And this one's Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans. And Anya Taylor-Joy plays a political radical who kidnaps a movie star played by Chris Evans. Oh. Don't know if that's coming out this year. I just was saying that I'm interested. Is New Val Vogue coming out this year? It is. OK.
Starting point is 02:10:11 I mean, but also Netflix, which is why I've got, I'm too heavy on Netflix. You're also going to miss lots. Well, I know, but that's why I did Downton Abbey, the grand finale. Can I throw out some things I'm thinking of? Yeah, sure. I'm thinking of? Yeah, sure. I'm thinking of...
Starting point is 02:10:28 on the Netflix side, Wake Up Deadman, which feels like a return to a slightly more serious tone for Rian Johnson. Okay. Starring Josh O'Connor as a priest, or is he? Or is he? Frankenstein, GDT. I didn't think I'd have much competition for you guys,
Starting point is 02:10:46 but I am looking forward to it. Child Papa. You think Frankenstein will sing Child Papa in the film? Frankenstein is also a fascist. I hope not. The doctor or the monster? Guillermo del Toro made... Well, I mean, I think Pinocchio, like, maybe had fascist origins.
Starting point is 02:11:03 I'm not really sure, but he's a fascist in... Yeah, he was in his version. You know what's crazy? Mussolini's grandson got signed by an Italian soccer club. And he looks a lot like him. That's great. Does he... He doesn't use Mussolini. He sure does. I don't know if you visited Italy recently, but you're about to get a...
Starting point is 02:11:19 Yeah, okay. Does he do like the whole... the stance and the posture and the... No. Look at him up. Ah. The secret agent I'm thinking about. Clyburn Mendocca Filho's movie, Brazilian film,
Starting point is 02:11:35 starring Wagner Moura. Okay. Begonia? Yeah, you see it, yeah. Grazi. Mille grazi. Of course he's playing you see it. Yeah. Grazie. Mil grazie. Of course he's playing for Lazio. Gosh.
Starting point is 02:11:55 The Mastermind? Yeah. Kelly Rikert. Hell yeah. Is the drama coming out this year? It's on my list. I don't know. That's another one. That's the Robert Pattinson Zendaya. A24 experience. I'm open to it.
Starting point is 02:12:12 As you can see, so the movies that got left on my list just to keep previewing things. Predator Badlands we briefly mentioned. I did put the Fantastic Four first steps on my list. It looks like Elefanting lives on a planet of predators. It does. I believe she's an android. Well she definitely gets like, her eyes do something funny. But she seems like she's pretty human in her response to the... We should do a watch along of Killer of Killers with Amanda and she's never seen it before. The animated Predator film.
Starting point is 02:12:42 It's an omnibus movie about four different figures in history who have gone toe-to-toe with a predator You know how we were talking about? Craig, but don't tell me who they are. I won't I'm just Mary Poppins But I would are they like Julia Robertson Mother's Day obscure pieces like figures in history They're archetypal warriors. Okay, but not Napoleon not no famous figures in history more than you know It's like it's like a samurai warriors. Okay, but not Napoleon? No famous figures in history. More like a samurai. There's your idea for the next movie. Okay.
Starting point is 02:13:09 Okay, that's good. I would take that. Running Man? Oh yeah. Tron Ares? No, didn't CR take that in the first auction? Yes, he did. Running Man I have. You did, that's right. Thank you, Jack. Tron Ares, no. There's another one I was interested in. Kaczynski did the first Tron rebootres... no.
Starting point is 02:13:27 There's another one I was interested in. Kaczynski did the first Tron reboot, right? He did. You can't take Smashing Machine. I've already seen it. Yeah, so I should have thought of that. He has Marty Supreme. You could have had the Safdie double.
Starting point is 02:13:38 I could have. And my heart, I do. Yeah. In my spiritual board, I have the Smashing Machine. Okay. But unfortunately I can't select it here. I'll take Predator Badlands just for kicks. Okay. Movie that's probably not going to score me too many points, but I'm super excited about.
Starting point is 02:13:56 Trachtenberg does a lot of movies. That's what we're doing for me. Have fun list. Trachtenberg has been killing it. Ten Cloverfield Lane. Prey. Killer of killers. And now President of Badlands. For how much? Well, we'll do it for one dollar. For one dollar. So we're all going to walk out of here with cash. No, I didn't. I spent it all. Oh. Well, Sean and I know how to save. Yeah. But it doesn't go anywhere. So. Well, we'll see. We'll listen to the weapons pod and see where that money goes. You know, that's what it's all about. We're going to find these kids. Let's recap our picks. Chris, what are you first?
Starting point is 02:14:27 I got Ballot of a Small Player for $165, Weapons for $465. Is this thing on? $70. Now you see me, Colin, now you don't. For $36? And for $60, I got Bruce Springsteen, Deliver Me From Nowhere. I'm fucking killing it. Look at that. That's a really weird board. You know, you wouldn't want it any other way. I'm happy for you.
Starting point is 02:14:56 Avatar, Fire and Ash for $300 for me. Superman for $62. Hamnet for $219. It was just an accident for $41. And Predator Badlands for $1. Got After the Hunt for $260. Roof Man for $100. Jay Kelly for $420.
Starting point is 02:15:15 A House of Dynamite for $180. And Downton Abbey, the grand finale, for $40. I gotta say, you can be such a goofball. And then as soon as you do voiceover, you're like, and then I got House of Dynamite. You know, like... Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:15:31 That was your NPR voice. Oh, yeah, I can do it too. I love it. Thank you. The thing about this game, which is very stupid, is that we can put this graphic on social media, and people can be like, oh, my God, this person did amazing. It's all contextual.
Starting point is 02:15:46 It's all about the flow of the game, when it's happening. Maybe instead we should just put a picture of Mussolini's grandson up. We'll probably do better numbers. I think it's great grandson. Great grandson. Mussolini's son? Only because I Googled it.
Starting point is 02:15:59 Um, that's it. That's a good one. No other thoughts. We're talking about Superman later this week. We're seeing it tomorrow. Hey, Ph's it. That's a good one. No other thoughts. We're talking about Superman later this week. We're seeing it tomorrow. Hey, Phyllen. I'm excited. I wish we had time for dinner beforehand.
Starting point is 02:16:12 Oh. Do we not? I guess we don't. Yeah, because of our children. Yeah. Shoot. What about after? We can break it all down.
Starting point is 02:16:20 Okay. Talk about that immigrant story. Okay. Do the pub before the pub. I know, it's tough. You and Andy don't do that? You guys text. We try not to. We text. You text. The man and I rarely talk about the movie beforehand. Andy likes to text during his watching of episodes.
Starting point is 02:16:32 Okay. And how do you feel about that? That sounds terrible. Well, it's usually quite charming, intelligent, and funny, but I'm always like, save it for the pod. Yeah. It's tough. Now I'm hungry. Thanks to our producer, Jack Sanders Sanders for his work on this episode. No, thanks to Sam for cooking up this new scoring system
Starting point is 02:16:51 We'll see you for Superman. Bye you
