I first met Quenetta when I started reaching out to women in prison. For years, I felt like I knew her. She was a nurse. She was strikingly beautiful, brilliant, and she really had a way with words. She could look you dead and out and lie with the best of them. I thought I knew why she'd landed behind bars. She'll win people over and they'd be so enamored with her.

It's like they ought to hide. I was telling you wrong. You don't need to scam. You don't need to trick people. I thought I knew why she killed a man. I'm going to be honest. He would be my ass so bad. I would have grabbed the Virgin Mary to help me.

But I know that I've been to the point where I was just so scared that I was about to die. Violence had been her way out of a terrible situation. Right? She did some things she shouldn't have did. She made a big mistake. But the more I dug in, the more people I talked to, the more I realized that nothing was quite so simple. You know, Quinella used men for money.

I had guns in the kitchen everywhere. Once I had she shouted me. I kept asking myself, how do you make sense of a person's deepest truths when they are all wrapped up in the thornyest lies? Just something kept pulling at me going, Quinella did this. We had her hitting his accounts.

We had her with his car. So we had a suspect before we even had the murder. But it wasn't until investigators saw the concrete slab in the backyard that they wondered. Who are we really up against?
