I've lived here pretty much all my life.
Small town. Everybody knows everybody.
A great place to raise your family.
There a lot of drugs in Scott County?
Yeah.
The story begins with a drug bust and a gunshot.
Got one with a shotgun in the woods. One officer down. One officer down.
His life was given to protect and to serve Scott County.
A county run by a sheriff's office that casts a long shadow.
We've had some pretty bad sheriffs in here,
but more bad ones than we have good ones.
Jim Carson was unbeatable until that happened.
The story isn't about who did it.
I came here
because I want you all to know that this case was wrestled with, looked at, gone
over, reinvestigated. It's about why. I thought they were friends, best friends.
You could kind of cover up a little dope dealing. And he told me, he said, if I
come up missing, you'll know what happened to me.
And it's about one person who wouldn't let it go. This whole scenario is just not making sense to
me. Just my gut feeling. What happens when the story just doesn't add up? He said, you've got
this all wrong. I'm Sean Flint. 14 years ago, I went to Scott County, Tennessee and wrote a magazine story.
Then I went back to take another look at a shooting that's left a question lingering for 20 years.
Was it an accident or a deliberate killing?
God knows.
And you're going to hear 1,500 stories of how it happened, how this took place.
And will we ever know the truth?
Probably not unless somebody comes forward.
We can take a pretty good stab at it, though.
I'll consult you, copy.
