Yes. He had surgery. On his shoulder. And so that's why he's not here. Dude, this is awesome. Dude, that's huge. Oh, look at that. Look at it.

Yeah, that's why I did it at this time. So we could have a couple weeks off to be a little light work and to help out a little bit with the healing. Isn't that nice of them though? He scheduled it around this time because he knew he's going to have two weeks off and he wouldn't affect his work for two weeks. Yeah. That's nice. I wouldn't. I would do it in the middle of the year.

Would you? I'd be like, yeah, I'm out six weeks. Sorry, dude. But then somebody, then we'd get somebody to replace you. Then maybe better than you. All right, let's go over now to our interview with new Stanford head football coach, Tevita Pritchard. He comes over from the commanders, where he spent the last few seasons as their quarterback's coach. But really, he's a Stanford guy. He's a former Stanford quarterback. big upset against USC once when they were like 40-point underdogs.

It was a massive game. But we talk about that. He's a Stanford guy through and through. Here he is. I really liked him. Coach, Tevita Pritchard. Coach, are you underwater right now? I've got to imagine the first couple weeks is just all relationships and saying hi, right?

There's a lot of relationships, a lot of kind of reinserting back into the Matrix, but it has been fun because this is home, and it's been exciting to get back here. So I've got to spend a little time with Coach. and he came on the show and talked with him and he was like, I got one year. He was very, he said, I'm here because Andrew, I got one year and I'm out. And that's such an interesting situation for you to come in because one, nobody left for a bigger job, which wouldn't have happened there. And then two, nobody got fired. So it's kind of a positive place to come. What has it been like reinserting and has he helped at all? Yeah, you're right. I mean,

it was and is very unique in the way that that transition occurred. And I have not interfaced with him a ton leading up to this situation. Obviously, I always knew who he was through Andrew. And then Zach Hertz always spoke very highly of him. But in our increasing interactions, as time has gone on, man, my respect for him has grown really, really quickly. And not just who he is as a coach, but as a man, as a leader. And I can't say enough about what he did in this unique situation.

Obviously taking over at a time in the calendar that was not typical. and to come in here like the day before spring ball and kind of be able to do what he did and instill a culture and start building for the future, even though he knew that it was a kind of a one year or one season shepherding during this time. I can't say enough about the groundwork that was laid with the staff, with the players here and the culture going forward. So I would say, you know, Frank Reich is a Stanford man forever and always. This is going to be such a corny question,

but since you're a Stanford guy to come and have the office. Was it a moment where you're like, this is now my office? I would say it was less of that and more trying to make sure I didn't walk in the other offices that I've occupied over my time here because there's probably around five or six. So it was more of that than it was the awe of being in this office. It was more like, oh, almost walked into that office because muscle memory told me to do so. Yeah, when we moved buildings, I drove over to the wrong building a couple times because I had done it so many times. You're just sitting down. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you mentioned culture, and I think that

word's thrown around a lot, but how do you start changing culture? What are the first steps when you're going to do something that's so macro? Obviously, it takes micro to make macro. What do you start doing? Yeah, that's, it's, it's, it is the question. It is the question. As you come in here and you talk about installing a culture, the first thing is the people, right? Because culture is just a shared set of values between people in a group and an organization and a team. And so I think the first thing is getting the right people here. You know, I'm working hard right now to identify and hire a staff and put a staff together. And so I think it's about bringing people here who are a fit. And obviously fit can be interpreted a lot of different ways, but they first have to understand

what our vision is going forward and kind of who we're going to be, what we're going to be about. And then they have to be a fit for Stanford, you know, and they're This is a unique place. It's a special place. It's a place that I know and I love very, very, very much. And so they have to understand. Not that they have to have even a history with Stanford, but there are certain things that they have to understand are unique to this place

and that there are things that we're not just going to put up with, but we're actually going to lean into. You know, when you talk about the way that you have to recruit here, some people can see that as a negative. I see it as a superpower, right? And something that allows us to identify the people who belong here and then bring them here and develop them. So that's the first thing is bringing the people here.

And then it's really deciding and defining what the culture is. And that's not just a me thing, right? This whole thing is not about me. It's about myself and Andrew and Sam Fisher and the other folks in this building really defining, hey, what is going to set us apart and what's going to make us the best program we can be? And then once that's done, it's reinforcing that every day. And I think that's the biggest thing is you get a culture off the ground.

It's making it very clear what it is. and then it's reinforcing it. It's repeating it so that that thing can be seen and reinforcing. It's catching people doing it right, right? I mean, we're going to talk about competition. That's going to be core to our culture, right? I want to be able to catch people right. So it's walking out to the practice field when I can and go watching, you know, workouts

and saying, hey, you guys do a great job competing. You know, so it's just reinforcing those things. It's finding those. And then it's being honest and telling the truth when we're falling short of that mark, right? whether it's myself or anybody else. Like, hey, when you're instill in culture, it's really about making sure that you're upholding those things in a really, really strong manner from day one.

So I know Clark Lee, who coaches Vanderbilt here because we live and we've done some stuff together. And they have a similar, I won't even say issue, but a similar circumstance to where they have to recruit a different way. And are there guys that you will see, and man, I'd really love to have them, but if it's grades or that you can't take because of what Stanford demands out of their student athlete?

Yeah, you know what? I mean, it's what you find here is there is a filtering process, right? And one that honestly, you know, I mentioned it's a superpower of this place because it's one of those things where I don't look at guys and say, oh, man, I can't recruit them. Our recruiting department does a great job of, you know, those players usually don't even come across my desk, right? And I'm saying my desk right now in this role,

But even going back to when I was here before, right, you really kind of what you don't see, you're not reacting to. You know, so it's like, I know the guys that we can recruit. I know that crop of people that we are looking at, we are evaluating and getting to know. And so it's way more leaning into, man, who can be here, right? Who are those folks that we're looking for and identifying? Because when you do cut that down, it allows us to be a lot more specific and efficient and effective, right? and being able to focus on a smaller group from day one.

Are you going to call plays? I came in here, Guns of Blazing, that I was going to call plays, and I'm now in a space where I want to stay open. I want to stay open. I will be involved in the offense. That's something that we're working through right now, and I'm looking forward to putting it together this collection of people that's going to come in here, both on the offensive side and the defensive side.

But I have walked back from that stance a little bit, just knowing that I want to get the best people here, And I don't want to limit me. I don't want to limit us. I don't want to limit this program because I actually want to get the best and best fit people for this place. How do you feel about nine conference games?

I'm still figuring that out, man. I'm still figuring that out, you know, just like being in, I mean, you ask non-conference, but I'm coming here, you know, to a brand new conference. Then I left. And so I'm wrapping my head around that.

I'm wrapping my head around non-conference games and all the travel with conference. And so I'm still, I'm still, you know, it's fun. It's fun to kind of reinsert here. and kind of catch up, so to speak, right? Because I'm both catching up on things that were familiar to me, and then I'm catching up in a sense that like,

oh, man, this has changed since I've been gone. You know, so, you know, when it comes to non-conference, I'm excited to play the best around the country. You know, I mean, I think that's something that, you know, when I was here before, you know, I have great memories. Obviously, Notre Dame is a non-conference that we play every year. That has always been a really good matchup for us and one that, you know, has a great history.

And I remember playing in that game. I remember coaching in that game. We had some great battles and I looked forward to that one. And then I think we've done a good job of scheduling schools that are challenging to us and that we have a great games against. So I'm looking forward to kind of working with Andrew and getting caught up on a lot of that stuff. Yeah, I wouldn't schedule a single hard team non-conference. We were seeing it. I would play all high schools, coach.

I would just go play high schools in California. I wouldn't travel because you guys are traveling all across the freaking country. And you're playing nine conference games next year. You're having to go to Virginia Tech. What high school did you go to? Well, I didn't go to one of California. I'm from Arkansas, but I'm just saying all I would play are high schools in California so you don't lose. I hear you.

Pulaski Academy. Yeah, maybe we can get some high schools on the school. How do you know Pulaski Academy? Come on, man. I've been recruiting for a long time. I can name the most random high schools from the most random places. Never has a coach mentioned PA in the middle of an interview like that. I've been there, man.

I've been there. Come on. Hey, why did you go to Stanford? You know what? I grew up in a house. My dad played at Washington State University. My parents met there. My uncle was Jack Thompson, the throwing Simone who played at Washington State. So I grew up thinking, I'm going to Washington State. This is in the cards. I'm going to work hard to be a college football player and go play in the NFL, but I'm going to go to Washington State. Early in the recruiting process, right, back in the old PAC 10, you're basically, if you were West Coast quarterback, you had to be the top 10. So you could be a PAC 10 quarterback. They took a quarterback early in that cycle. and it kind of rocked my world. I was kind of like, wait, I was supposed to go to Washington State, you know? And I'm not joking. The only thing I knew about Stanford when that happened was that they played Washington State.

I was like, I think I know their colors. I couldn't even tell you where it was, but that's the extent of what I knew about Stanford. Obviously, this was a different time, right, before social media. So, like, you know, that really didn't reach me for whatever reason about, like, what Stanford, what is about, what the brand was. And it just so happened. We had a connection to the staff, and I got invited to come to a camp here. to try to earn a scholarship. And I remember walking on campus for the first time.

And I actually saw the pool complex. And I saw it from a distance, which doesn't excuse this story I'm about to tell. But I looked at it. I was like, wow, the football stadium. That's incredible. And as we get closer, like, no, coach, that's the pool. And I was like, oh, that's the pool. And it just spoke to just like how incredible this campuses and the buildings and all

of that. But what I also didn't know was like the campus and the buildings and the sediments. are not even the half of it, right? Because you get to know the people and you get to know what they're about, how committed they are, and how collaborative they are, and they're about excellence, and they're about cohesion. And it's just like, the more I learned about this place, I was like, man, these are my kind of people. And luckily, I did well enough in that camp. I earned a scholarship. I committed shortly after. I got into school shortly after that. I'll never forget that phone call. I was at our high school stadium watching my sister play soccer,

and we got the call, and I remember that feeling. I remember the reaction of getting accepted in the school. It's just like everything has led to, you know, being here and being a part of this community, and it has, it is, it's made me as a person. Like, I am a product of this place in so many ways, and I'm so grateful for my experience here. Now I'm excited to be able to give back and serve these players

and hope to create an equally great experience for them. The continuity that is there with, and you mentioned Andrew Luck, did that help keep players from jumping in the portal that he could already establish relationships? For sure. And Andrew's special. Andrew's special. Like this is, this is not only was it the fact that his role was already filled and in place, but it's the fact that it's him, right? He has an extreme passion for this place. He has an extreme passion, period. And he's a dude. He's a dude. Like, people understand that, right? And they know what he's about. And Andrew could be doing

anything he wants, right? But again, he and I are similar in that, like, we are here in service of this place and the experience of our student athletes. And that's something that's real. And I know our students, I know our football players feel that, right? I know our community feels that, how invested he is in this place. And so that's a big part of the reason that that guys are still here is they knew that with his support, right, and the, and his vision for this, that we were going to, we were going to be going in a direction and they wanted to be a part of it. questions. And this one may be dumb because you could have 10 times, but I'm going to ask you.

A dumb question. Yeah, it is because if you know, no, no John Elway, that's a dumb question. But have you got to spend any time with John Elway? You know what? I've met John over the years. I've gotten to spend a little bit of time with him, but it's not been extensive. When you were playing quarterback there, would you watch tape back of how dominant John Elway was? Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, I think it's a core tenet of being a quarterback that you just, you watch guys. You love to watch guys and kind of see parts of their game that maybe you see in yourself or aspirational, right? Like, oh, man, I'd love to be able to do it like that. So you really

study. And he was certainly one you study because he's one of the all-time grades. All right. Two questions left. Whenever you take a job, and this is your old school, so you probably did have some gear, is there like a box that's like, this is going to cover you for the first two weeks, and it's just all, it's the hats, it's the shirts, it's everything you're going to need. Absolutely. I had, I had, you know, what's funny is I have a lot of friends in the profession. And they, a lot of them have rules because, you know, they'll have made a number of moves and going to different teams and franchises. And so a lot of guys who have been in this coaching world for a long time, they say, okay, hey, I'm going to keep two things from my last job. And so I can get rid of the rest, give it away, and then, and then, you know, I'm going to get new gear at my new place.

Well, obviously, my journey's been a little bit different, right? I mean, I played it. I started at Stanford in 2005 as a freshman football player. and I was there throughout continuously until 2020. So I accrued and acquired a lot of gear over my time. Now, I will also say this, with 10 siblings and nieces and nephews and a mom and dad and uncles, like my closet was raided early and often. So that was spread out, but I still had a lot of gear.

And luckily with it, you know, me being alum, even when I moved on from this place originally, I was like, well, I'm not going to keep two things. Like I still got to represent the squad and be able to, especially on the East Coast, you know, kind of spread the gospel of Stanford. So luckily, I held on to a lot of stuff. I believe my family did too, so we weren't too far behind. Last question. And I want to talk about Jane Daniels for a second, but also how that correlates with what

you're doing now. Obviously, you coached Jane Daniels, one rookie of the year. But what we would hear and what we'd read is all of the tech he would use, the glasses to see the field. Are you implementing that at Stanford at all? Yeah, we're still looking at like the technology that we're going to use. Obviously, we're still, we're not at the, that point yet where we're looking at some of those things. But, you know, they, they do a great

job. Like the, like the group that we worked with, the VR company that we worked with with Jaden, it's a great tool. But here's what I would say, working with Jaden Daniels, working with Marcus Marietta, Sam Hartman, Josh Johnson this year. Like, Jaden works, man. So like, whether it's the, whether it's the VR goggles or walkthroughs or watching traditional film, like, he's, you he, Jaden and Mark, like, those guys make those tools. You know what I'm saying? Like, like, those tools are only as useful as the user and the person who's utilizing them. So it's really, what I do want to separate is like, that is a powerful tool and one that's really, really cool. And if you believe in it and you use it, it can be super helpful and really

take your game to the next level. But so much of it is about the people. And like getting to work with Jaden has really affected my career. Getting to work with Marcus has really affected my career because those guys, the way that they approach the game, the passion they have for learning, the passion they have for leadership and teamwork. I can't say enough about my time in that room with those guys. Coach, I really appreciate the time. I know you're underwater. We, you know, we've got a couple guys we've been talking with that got new jobs. And so they all say the same thing. Like, they have 500 text messages.
