Starting point is 00:03:36 In case you guys are a first-time listener, what I normally do is take the best seven bits from the show this week and count them down. Well, I'm doing something a little different this time. Instead of this week, I'm taking the best performances over the past six months from January 2020 until now and counting them down because we've had so many epic moments of performances on the show that there's a lot to get to. Plus, I am bringing on one of my favorites because she's one of my best friends. It's Hillary. What's up? Hi, hi. She'll be joining with me. She'll be joining with me. She'll be joining me on a few segments and we're just
Starting point is 00:04:12 going to talk a lot of music things because this is kind of a music best bits this weekend. So, let's go. Coming in at number seven, Marin Morris and Ryan Hurd, not only are they country stars, but yes, they are married and they had their first baby together, and they came on the show to perform one of their actual first-ever duets together. It's called Chasing After You. I love when artists come on and do their duets, especially when it's a couple like these two, because not only are they in sync as individuals,
Starting point is 00:04:41 but together they're just so magical. So in case you miss this performance, listen to it now. Number seven, the Friday morning conversation with Marin Morris and Ryan Hurd. Hello, friends. Ryan, your last song I felt was extremely underserved. Did you know that? I appreciate you saying that. I feel like you have so many hits.
Starting point is 00:05:04 And I think this next song that you're about to play for us is the one that does it. Well, I appreciate that a lot. You've always been, I mean, my first song I ever released was called We Do Us. It was like three or four years ago. And you were very supportive of that. And I love every other memory. and it's just really hard to promote a song when you can't go promote it, you know. And so I really do, I haven't even played that song live.
Starting point is 00:05:29 It's kind of odd to like have a single that you didn't even get to play out. But I'm really proud of it and I'm really, I don't know. I think making country music in Nashville is its own, it's its own reward. And it's like the work. I mean, I think you feel the same way. The work is its own reward. So getting to make country music in Nashville and also make music with Marin. this year is kind of the two things that I am really, really proud of and excited of.
Starting point is 00:05:55 So hopefully this song is exactly what you just said. I feel too a bit, and you could tell me if you feel differently, that this song is basically after you have argued with the umpire when you were right on the last call, meaning everybody knows they messed up. The oom knows he messed up. He's going to make it up to this call, regardless. You know what, man? I am really blessed to get to do what I do.
Starting point is 00:06:20 and I've gotten to do everything in country music. I've gotten to go to every award show with mayor, and I've gotten to write hits for other people and see my name at the top of the charts as a writer. So I have nothing to complain about. And honestly, just the fact that we get to work together this year is just a massive... I think we always imagine we do it someday.
Starting point is 00:06:41 It feels strange that it's here now. So I'm just really excited about all of it. Everything I get to do, I think, at this point, is a blessing. Also, Marin Morris is here. Hi, Marion. Hey. Good to see you as well. You too. Happy New Year. Happy. Do we still say in February, happy New Year? You know, I got into this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:06:59 I just heard myself, like, do a Larry David thing. Well, we haven't seen you since the New Year, so. It's been a while. Happy New Year to you guys. We should say it all. Every time this year we see each other, it may be September, dang it. I'm going to go, hey, happy New Year, guys. Happy not 2020. Yeah, that's a good one.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Instead of talking more, I think our audience would like to hear the new song play to I don't have a bunch of questions about it, obviously. But Marin Morris is here with Ryan Hurd. Now, Ryan, this song here, like, what was, was it always going to be a duet? And was it always going to be Marin? This is a really long story on this song. We did not write this song. Our friends Brinley and Jerry Flowers wrote this song.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Jerry plays bass guitar for Keith Urban. And it's an incredible. Both of them are incredible writers. And we, I mean, this song has been, I think every single single song, artist in town has heard this song and held it and we were just lucky enough to get an opportunity to record it very a lot of times to get it right and uh yeah it's it's odd to to be a songwriter in nashville and not not sing a song that you wrote but we're really proud of it and and um what do you have to add well was it when you heard it the first time was it written as a duet it was not okay
Starting point is 00:08:14 and we turned it into a duet there's a version of marron that marin has written on that we ended up like going back kind of taking a step back from and it's had a lot of versions and it's actually like the demo of this song is really kind of famous on music row and is like writing circles and so I feel really really blessed that it fell to me and to us to get an opportunity to put it out because it is such a special song. All right here we go Ryan Hurd with Marin Morris here is chasing after you. You come over when your wine's all gone. It always catch when I'm not that strong and then you wind up staying all night long ain't nothing new but I know yeah I know it's a matter of time till you walk till you walk back out of my life leave me standing here lonely feeling like a fool
Starting point is 00:09:06 every time you say we're done you come back to the love you were running from don't know why I don't know why I let you but I do Because I love chasing after you. I love chasing after you. Awesome, guys. The Bobby Bone Show. Ryan Hurd and Marin Morris are here. Got a new song called Chasing After You, which is just fantastic.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Congratulations on another great song, Ryan. Thank you. Great. I saw, too, that you guys watched all seven seasons of West Wing. Is that true? Mm-hmm. Did you watch them, too, Ryan? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Oh, you did? Oh, yeah. Seems like a lot of times. dedicated to a show that went away a long time ago. It's one of those things where you've heard about this show for your entire life, but I was a kid when it came out. So it probably would have been pretty boring for an 11-year-old. So we watched the first episode and just absolutely loved it and kept going.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And you still thought it was good after it was over? You felt like today it was still good. It still holds up. Absolutely. The cast is great. And you see so many cameos throughout. the seven seasons of people that are now famous and it was their first part and um it started in 1999 so it's really funny to watch the first season and it looks so dated and um but it's so smart
Starting point is 00:10:51 i love aaron sorkin the writer he wrote like the social network and uh this show and so um it's just really really smart and i love the i love the score it sounds like a disney channel original movie score going along with this like really political dialogue. But no, it's just, it warms my heart. It's one of those shows where you're like, I feel way better after watching that. I don't know if it's something we would have watched
Starting point is 00:11:17 if we weren't at home all year. Yeah. Right. Well, I want to acknowledge the accomplishment that something like that is because I tried West Wing once and seven seasons, but some seasons are six, seven episodes, right? West Wing is 22 episodes per season,
Starting point is 00:11:33 which is 156 episodes total. So that's, yeah. also feel really good about that. Yeah. Hey, congratulations. There it is. Wow.
Starting point is 00:11:41 A lot of hours. We did it. It's not wasted because it is a good show. It is a great show, but no, I mean, it was a lot of episodes per season. And it came out at a time when, like, there was no TiVo. So I was looking, and I think, like, the most viewers they had in one of their episodes for the first or second season was like 20 million people, which is like who watches the Grammys now.
Starting point is 00:12:03 But this was back when, you know, you couldn't record stuff. you had to watch it as it was airing. But it's so good. Yeah, we started it over. It was so good. You started it over. Oh, yeah. The only show I can watch over and over again is the office,
Starting point is 00:12:15 and I watch it every night before I go to bed. But I think that because I have some sort of comfortability with it, and I can go to sleep, not wonder. There are only two shows in my whole life I've been able to do that too. The honeymooners? Because I've seen, do you know what that is? Like the old show? Yeah, like Jackie Gleason from like the 60s.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Because I knew every episode. I watch it with my grandma. It is comforting. Then the office, because I go to sleep knowing what's going to happen. and I'm not all butt puckered going, I wonder what's going to happen to gym. Yeah, but you also, like, your favorite episode is Scott's Tots. Love Scott.
Starting point is 00:12:44 That's the best. If you're talking about buttucker, I can't even watch the first scene of that episode. I can't. I like get anxiety. I love cringing. One time the television got stuck on Scott's Tots. He was having a meltdown.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I can't even speak about it. It's so, it's so cringy. For those that don't know, it's an episode of the office where Michael promises these kids when they're, you know, their first or second year in school, they're going to send them all to college. And then he goes back to go, I can't afford it now. But like in real life, if that happened, that's like a legal case, correct?
Starting point is 00:13:15 I mean, it has, like, it's... Like fraud. It has to be something that's like, he ends up buying their books or something. I was like, dude, you... Well, batteries for the class. Yeah. And then the one kid is... Batteries for their computer or whatever.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Yeah. And, but what I loved about it in the beginning is he really felt like he could take about... It would take him 16 years to be this mill. millionaire that he envisioned. Yeah, he thought he was going to be rich. Get there. He had good intentions. Yeah, Ryan's going to like throw out. He's already like an anxious. I don't know why it bothers me so much because the whole show is like based on that cringe factor. It's like social situations and and and. Well, doesn't someone in that episode say like Michael, this is the worst thing you've ever done? It's the worst thing anyone's ever done. Have you guys met any of the actors from the office? I did a radio. I got to ask Brian a question. on the radio once that's cool it was cool I met Meredith star struck who yeah and she was fantastic that like the nicest issue like I'll do whatever you want talk about whatever you want she was super nice have you have you met any of them I haven't no but I did buy a cameo from someone from the
Starting point is 00:14:23 West Wing for Ryan for Christmas oh yeah from Richard Schiff it was awesome Toby and what do you have him say to Ryan in the cameo she called me a or she told him I was a lovable curmudgeon Like Toby. Like Toby. And he said, I don't know if that's something to aspire to. Yeah, he's like, you should probably cut that out. We'll find it annoying.
Starting point is 00:14:43 Yeah. It was fun, though. Yeah. It was one of those fun things to get for Christmas. It's hard to, I think we're getting to the point where it's like we know each other so well that, like, the fun part is finding, like, special things that aren't, like, have nothing to do with money that, that you can do for the other person for holidays and stuff. And that was, like, definitely the best Christmas present. Yeah. Well, it wasn't pre, but sure.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Ryan Hurd and Marin Morris are here. Ryan's got a new song called Chasing After You, which I hope all you guys check out. I'm going to leave you with this final question. I'm getting married in July for the first time. What is your advice to me about marriage? Marriage or the wedding? Well, you can do what I was asking about marriage, like the whole big picture, but I'll take a piece of each. First, the wedding.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Don't worry about food so much. Like, make sure everybody's taking care of, but nobody remembers what they ate at your wedding. I think people stress out about that too much. Worry about the important stuff. Get the words right. And find each other throughout the night. We were, we like employed our relatives, like our close, you know, siblings to be like, hey, we're going to be talking to a lot of people.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Please make sure that we find each other throughout the night. Because, yeah, you're talking to everyone. You forget to eat. You're just like drinking on an empty stomach. and you like realize I haven't seen my new husband in half an hour. So that was like really important for us. Marriage. I mean, we've been married three years.
Starting point is 00:16:15 I don't know how wise we are with this. But I would just say, you know, especially being in the industry, it is helpful having someone that like going in just gets what you do. And never kind of makes you feel like you're having to choose between the two. And, yeah, I mean, in our first year of marriage, like, I was touring so much, like, internationally, too. Like, I was in South America, and we were, you were, like, really having to fly to come to see me. And that was, like, a whole blur the first year. Yeah, that was pretty exhausting, but it was worth it.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Yeah, just making time for each other. And, yeah, you go ahead. I think that the biggest thing that we did was making sure that no matter what happened every day that I could like we would talk on the phone even if we weren't in the same spot like having that like 10 minutes a day to like make sure that you're hearing each other's voice is really important so honestly I what we do is not people travel for work right I mean I try to simplify it as best as possible but I mean we've had to learn how to really make sure to like prioritize now with a kid like our family first and then the work stuff comes and it has to fit into that part of our life too
Starting point is 00:17:31 So I don't know. I think it's always a dance that you're doing. But I think the more you communicate, the easier it is to have really fun jobs that take you all over the place. And you travel for work a lot too. And I think that, man, it's going to be really cool because she gets it and she's a part of it. And yeah, we're excited for you. You guys are going to have a great wedding. Throw a party for yourself.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Well, should we cut a duet together? That's what I'm one. After hearing today, is that what we should do? Well, it took us. Instead of your vows? We've been together for five years, so it took us five years to do it. Yeah, this is our first time really, really doing a duet together. We've worked together a lot, though.
Starting point is 00:18:08 We've written, obviously met writing songs, and we've sung on each other's projects just in the background. They're not really taking up too much oxygen, but this is fun. It's fun to get to do this for the first time, just like both of our names on it. Did you guys do your own vowels? We did, yeah. I told Caitlin I'm going to rap mine. She didn't think that was funny.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Do you? Were you kidding? I. I was. You should wrap half of them. Yeah. How, when did you write yours compared to your wedding day? I think we wrote the week of.
Starting point is 00:18:38 We went to a bar. Who's we? You and, me and her. Oh, separately, though. Yeah. No, we sat at the same table and, like, we're sitting this bar and she was on her laptop
Starting point is 00:18:47 and I was writing on my, like, notepad. Yeah. We wrote our vows in a bar. Yeah. Together, but you didn't see them. Right. Yeah. We revealed the day of.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Yeah. Do you struggle saying them? Do you cry? I tried to do a mix of like really sentimental and obviously promising him all of these things that I will like do for him throughout our life together. But also, you know, I wanted to add some levity to it as well. So I said like I'll put up with you constantly watching sports every season ends and then it's the next sport season. I will put up with that and you put up with me relentlessly watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. and you somehow knowing people's names
Starting point is 00:19:30 and their business. Yeah. Well, listen. Our officiant was our best friend, which helped. She had a bit of a slip and she was really,
Starting point is 00:19:40 really nervous, and she's actually set in thickness and in health, which is pretty funny. Yeah, she goes, Ryan, do you take Marin in thickness and in health? And we were like,
Starting point is 00:19:51 yeah. Still holds up, I guess. Yeah, it still works. All right, Ryan heard Marin Morris. The new song is chasing after. you. They did it together. It's a great song. Love you both. Thank you guys for coming in.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Thank you. Good to see you. Hey, shout out your producer slash guitar player. This is my guitar player and producer Teddy, and he produced this with my friend Aaron, who I grew up with. And we're, yeah, Teddy actually does an office quote before every show in our little get-together, so office everywhere.
Starting point is 00:20:19 Teddy, great job, buddy. All right, there they are. Ryan Hurd, Mary Morris. Thank you guys. It's the best bits of the week. With Morgan number two. Super cool moment on the show. We had the front men of country come on. They're a new supergroup formed by the three voices of the top country bands of the 90s.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Richie McDonald of Lone Star, Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, and Tim Rushlow, formerly of Little Texas. They formed this group together, and it's so epic because when they came on the show, they performed each of those bands, like biggest hits. I'm talking amazed. God bless Texas. when she cries, which was just a really cool moment. Plus, it's 90s nostalgia because everybody loves that right now. Hillary, if you had a dream concert, and we're talking in the frontman of country right now,
Starting point is 00:21:10 so if you had a dream concert with three of your favorite country artists, who would be performing at it? This one was pretty tough to put together. I would say definitely Carrie Underwood has to be there. Powerhouse vocals, yes. I feel like this may be a little controversial to some people because they may not consider her country, but I do. We still love her. Taylor Swift. She's got country albums. Like, you know, so we're going to go with her. Three is so hard. I could not pick a third. But I think just because of my childhood and I love her so much, I'm going to go with Martina McBride.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Oh, all females. All females. I love females. What about you? I mean, that's a powerhouse vocals right there with all of them. That's my favorite, like a really powerhouse vocalist, like concert. Those are those are my favorite. I can just there in awe. Like, I don't have to be up at a concert dancing around. Like, I could just sit there and just, like, listen to Carrie Underwood sing, just the phone book, anything. And I, I would be in my happy place. True. She is, I mean, talk about, like, starting out on American Idol as just a star. And then to see her now, she just exploded. Yes. It's like she became a better singer. Oh, yeah. And I definitely claim her as my entertainer of the year. Like, out of any artist I've ever seen, like, of all time, she would be my, like, entertainer of the year for, like, life.
Starting point is 00:22:29 She does. She puts on an epic show in the round, which is so cool. Yes. And just entertains the entire stadium. Like, it's nobody's business. Didn't we go to that last show together? Yeah. I was just sitting there in awe the whole time.
Starting point is 00:22:41 I'm like, oh, my gosh. It was her Maddie and Tay and Runaway June, I believe. Okay. Yeah, those three together, I was so pumped because Runaway June, I love their album. And same with Maddie and Tay and then obviously Carrie Underwood. So I was so pumped for that show. because I knew every single song that every single act was singing.
Starting point is 00:23:00 So it was just so much fun and I had a blast. Those are the best concerts when you're like, I know all the opening act songs too. That's a concert that you know is just like beautifully put together because you're like, I can go from start to finish and know every song. Yeah, because sometimes you're sitting there, which is fine, like you get introduced to music, but you're like, I don't know this person.
Starting point is 00:23:16 I don't know their songs. But yeah, when you can go and you can sing. And I'm the type of person too. I don't like people talking to me during shows. So that one especially, and all my friends know, so they were very respectful of me during that show. But I just sit there and I'm like, please don't talk to me. Like I am just straight focused, focused on these people singing. In the zone.
Starting point is 00:23:35 And you either like, you know, most people go to concerts and I have a really good time with a lot of alcohol. That's not Hillary. Hillary wants to enjoy every single moment and make sure she remembers it all. I soak it in. I never understand like I'll have people behind me who are just falling over drunk. And I'm like, you paid so much money to be here. you just paid so much money on alcohol. You're not even going to remember this show tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Like, I want to remember every single moment. I just, I love it. I love shows. I feel like that happens to a lot of people, at least once in their lives. Yeah. But I get it. It does, for sure. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:24:09 I mean, I love all of those together, but mine is not, I mean, mine's all across the board. It'd be Keith Urban. I feel like I know one of yours. Shania Twain. Yep. Is that the one? Yeah. And then the third one's been hard for me because there's just so many good ones.
Starting point is 00:24:24 Hmm. And to mix, because those two together would be really fun to watch. Shanaa is an entertainer. Keith is an entertainer. They both have, like, she has talents in so many ways, from dancing to vocals, and he has all of the different instruments. Yes. I'm trying to think he would be, like, another good one with it.
Starting point is 00:24:42 That would mesh well in that vibe. I feel like I have a third one for you that I know you do like. I don't know if you would, like, pick it. Who? Dan and Shay. Oh, I do love Dan and She. A major Dan and Shea, which I am too. I feel like they would fit right in with them because they are very entertaining.
Starting point is 00:25:01 They have the vocals. They're so talented with instruments and lyrics. I feel like they'd kind of fit right in with those two. Yeah, no, you're right. And I've been to Dan and Shea's dance since the very beginning. So it fits with all of those three. I mean, that's the same with Shania and Keith. So, yeah, Keith Urban Shania Twain and Dan and Shea.
Starting point is 00:25:21 That would be a pretty epic concert. That's who, that's why it's fun. and I'm one of your best friends we can do this because I picked your people for you. Like that's, if I were to pick Morgan's three people, those are the three I would pick for her. Yes. And I totally knew Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride. It's always the third one that you're kind of like, well, yeah, I don't know which one you're going to go with. Yeah, like which one are they going to go with?
Starting point is 00:25:40 But the third is also always just in anything in life is always the toss up. It always changes. Right. Like your one and two is always stay the same. Yes. But your third is always going to stay like a toss up. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:51 And it's such a hard decision. That's such a hard question. because you're like, oh shoot, I love this person and I love this person, but I can only pick three. So who do I really want? I know. And I'm about to make it even harder. Okay, are you ready? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:03 What's a country song that you can never forget? Like, whether it has a memory tied to it, whether it, as soon as you heard it on the radio, you're like, I will always remember and love this song. What's just a country song? All out of all of them that you will never forget. Do I have to pick just one? Just one. Do you want me to go first to?
Starting point is 00:26:24 to help you. Yeah, because I have a few in mine, so I'm like, oh, shoot, how do I want to go with this? And it can go any direction, sad, happy, mad, whatever, like, is the trigger? Mine are all sad. Yeah. Well, so is mine. Because that's just a natural thing to remember. Yes. Mine was, where were you when the world stopped turning? Alan Jackson. Yes. Because that moment in history, that moment in time, him putting out that song very quickly after everything about it. And now every time I hear that song, like, it brings me. back to that moment. Yeah. Which is super sad. Also, why I don't listen to it unless like somebody else plays it and I hear it. Yeah. Such a good song. Like such a in the moment, emotional raw.
Starting point is 00:27:07 It's powerful. Yeah. Just everything about it. Even like the music video. Like everything that went along with it was just insanely memorable in the best and worst ways. Yeah. It gives me chills. I know. I know. I'm like trying not to cry. And I'm. That's so funny. You picked that one because mine is also an Alan Jackson song too. I could have guessed that. Yep. Mine is drive because it just brings back so many childhood memories. My dad, I know I've talked about this before. He's got three daughters. His dad passed away and Alan wrote that song about his dad who passed. And then he talks about in the end, like, taking his daughters and teaching them how to drive and things like that. And I'm sure everybody's heard this song before. But, you know, the first part of the song just takes
Starting point is 00:27:50 you through a little boy with his dad and him teaching him. And I just know my My dad was so close with his dad. And so that song is just always going to be so special. And, I mean, I remember driving around town with my dad and listening to Alan Jackson. And now that I'm older, it's reverse. I'm the one driving. And we're still listening to Alan Jackson in that song. So I would definitely say that one for sure.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Well, when Alan Jackson, I mean, he just in the last few weeks released a new album. Yes. And it was really good. Like we hadn't heard really from Alan Jackson that much new music in a long time. Has it been, I think it was six years since he had released to the actual album. And I know me and you are such big Allen fans. We've talked about it before. We've actually had Alan Jackson jam sessions in the car.
Starting point is 00:28:34 But he just brings back so many amazing childhood memories for me. And yeah, I can just turn on an Alan Jackson album and just be right back in my childhood, sitting in the front seat with my dad driving around town. Yes. And on a previous best bit, like it was the last one Hillary was on. we went on a really long tangent about like the memories associated with things. Yes. And Alan Jackson was one of those for you.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Yeah, it was. It's just, it's so crazy how music can do that. But yeah, he will always be on a list for me. Yes. Yes. I love Alan for you, Shanaya for me. Always. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Okay. Well, you guys can listen here. This is the front men of country performing three really massive 90s country songs from each of of their respective bands. And it was such a cool moment. So seriously, listen to all of it. Number six. On the Bobby Bones show now.
Starting point is 00:29:28 The Front Men of Country. I got to tell you guys, when I heard you guys had created a supergroup, I was like, I hit my producer. I said, we have to get them in immediately. So let me introduce you guys, first of all, from Lone Star, Ritchie McDonald. Good to see you, Richie. Thank you. Great to be here.
Starting point is 00:29:41 From Little Texas, Tim Rushlow. Tim, what's up, buddy? And Larry Stewart from Restless Heart. What up, Larry? Yeah. How you doing? Well, Larry, let me start with you. How did this come together?
Starting point is 00:29:51 Oh, well, short, came together really sort of part-time almost 10 years ago. And it was his idea. And we ended up going, putting the three of us together, and going overseas and playing for the troops for quite a few trips. And we would just do a few shows here and there, a handful, a couple handfuls a year. And then here we are, huh, let's do something different, guys. Well, and there's such a demand.
Starting point is 00:30:21 for 90s country. I would pay money. I'm not paying you today. Don't get any other. But Richie, I would pay money to watch this group. And you guys had to see that too. You can go out and play all your hits,
Starting point is 00:30:34 but also play basically a whole generation with you three massive bands. So 30 million records altogether. That had to be a part of it too. We could really go out and really entertain a lot of people because there's such a demand. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:30:46 And we're hoping that's what happens. You know, such a great era for music. Just the story storytelling songs and, you know, the melodic, you know, the music of the songs. We're excited about this, just the three of us. And the thing is, it'll be an hour. We'll play an hour and a half. We could probably play two or three hours and still not play all the hits. Tim, when I think of a little Texas, it's the, I think of the video for God Bless Texas, because I was, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:18 What year was that? 93. I think of the piece of paper stuck on his face. Do you think of that? That's not what I think. I think about the girls because I was 13 years old. And I'm watching CMT. And I'm like, there are really voluptuous ladies in Texas bikinis.
Starting point is 00:31:36 People always thought we were a big part of that. In reality, we did the concert scene at South Fork Ranch. And everything else was shot without us. They took like three weeks and went around the whole state of Texas. The cheerleaders, the Dallas Cowellers, all that stuff, we weren't there for all that. But it was fun to see it final. You know. Just killed a fantasy.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Guy, you just ruined everything. I'm sorry. Yeah. Well, I mean, you know, I could be David Lee Roth for a minute. Oh, my goodness. Well, I know you guys have all been extremely generous with what you would do. So let's just call a few out. How about from let's do up first.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Let's do When She Cry. Let's do a restless heart original. Is that cool? Can we start with that? Yeah. I'd love to. All right. I brought my piano player with my personal piano player with you over here.
Starting point is 00:32:15 Who, by the way. Is Richie McDonnell from Lone Star. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, the front minute country. Let's go. The road I have traveled on is paved with good intentions. It's littered with broken dreams that never quite came true. When all of my hopes were dying, her love kept me trying.
Starting point is 00:32:57 She does her best to hide. And she does. I can hear her. She's dry. Hold a feeling side. So I pray because I die a little each time when she cried. Nice. The front minute country.
Starting point is 00:33:49 So I'm assuming, and this could be an awkward question, are we cutting in thirds here? You mean money wise? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's all Larry's. I'm the oldest. We are? We're just side guys. They haven't.
Starting point is 00:34:04 We haven't done a business plan yet. We've already been in those bands, man. Did you guys ever tour together throughout the 90s, 2000s? Like, did Lone Star, Little Texas, did you guys ever end up on the same bill ever? That's a great question. Restless Heart did a couple of shows with Lone Star two years ago. Yeah, we did. I remember in the early 90s, we did a show opening for Russell's Heart in Oklahoma somewhere,
Starting point is 00:34:31 and they were like huge nests. and we were starting, but they were like the Eagles to us, and we were just in awe. And I was hoping that they would be great, and they were better than that. They were like, it was stunning. We kind of realized at that point we had to go back to the drum board and get better, which was a great thing. They were a huge influence. Were we nice? You were very kind.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Good. Yeah. It was a good day for you. It was good. All the front men from Lone Star, Little Texas, and Restless Harder here, they're in a new band called the Frontman of Country. And Richie, I'm going to come over to you. You're with Lone Star for 30 years. That's a whole lifetime.
Starting point is 00:35:05 I told my son, and he didn't like the way I put this, but I said, you know, in the twilight of my career, he goes, well, Dad, you're not in the twilight. I said, well, I'm not going to do this for 40 more years. I'm just telling you. But I don't know, this is just a really exciting chapter to get to sing with these two guys. I got to imagine when Amazed hits,
Starting point is 00:35:24 because it wasn't just a massive country song. It became a massive, it was everywhere. There was started to be like dancing. It's a, oonza, oonza. You heard that too. Euro dance mixes of Amaze. I was on the way home from Nashville one day, and I heard that mix, that dance mix to Amaze. I was like, who authorized that?
Starting point is 00:35:44 What's the feeling whenever you cross over from being a country star to where the whole world is hearing your music that doesn't even know country music? Does it feel different? You know what? It really does, and I think the three of us have all had that song in our careers. But it just opened a lot more doors, you know, from sitting in a listening room, at RCA Records and VNA Records and, you know, getting songs pitched to you, that song pitched to us and going from the studio and then to watch it morph into what it did, you know, crossing over from country to pop to, you know, contemporary hot.
Starting point is 00:36:20 I don't know all the different genres, but it's crazy, but it did allow us to do a lot more things. And it widened the fan base, I'd say. This is a song that I will never dare to sing karaoke because it is so, there I can't even like oh come on no no I will not come on you should how in the world are you singing how do you not blow out a voice singing this every night I don't know I just I guess I've been lucky over the years and tried to take care of my voice and just gargle with whiskey and tequila but other than that you know just gargle the front men of country are here let's do let's do a little a little lone star here here here
Starting point is 00:37:03 is amazed. Every time our eyes meet is feeling inside me. It's almost more than I can take. Baby, when you touch me, I can feel how much you love me and it just blows me away.
Starting point is 00:37:35 I've never been this close to anyone anything. I can hear your thoughts. I can see your dreams I don't know how you do what you do I'm so in love
Starting point is 00:37:55 and just keeps getting better I want to spend the rest of my life every little thing baby I'm amazed by I know well here's what you did you did two things one
Starting point is 00:38:35 I know I was the only person course but you took us to the last you know the last chorus I had to and you flex said they call it a flex when you jump back and you went, ah! We saw you?
Starting point is 00:38:45 You were just proving to us. You're just proving it to us. And then I liked it. Because I like how the song ends. You know, I'm glad he did that. Dang, that's so cool. Man. So you,
Starting point is 00:38:55 my wife listens every morning. She said, you need a, you're looking for a wedding singer, so I'm thinking. There's three of them here. I will invite you guys to the wedding if you come up and play a couple songs. Dang, that's so, you guys are,
Starting point is 00:39:08 again, I will pay money to go to this show. And again, I don't, Listen, I'm in an industry, have a career that I have to pay to go to many shows, honestly. But this is so cool because you guys have songs of my life. Like, when you play these songs, we're going to do God Bless Texas in a second. Like, I know where I was at the exact time that these songs hit. You brought up a good point. I think that when we first did this, it was just like fun.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Like, wow, this is fun because we're actually fans of each other's bands big time. And we'd love to sing on each other's songs. But there's a common thread that runs through the three of our groups that's really, it's authentic. it's real we're not trying to be you know whatever it's just really authentic and it really is the soundtrack to people's lives that that 90s thing that's just it's there's just something to it and as we have grown and doing these shows that was during the COVID thing and then of course post that now thank god we're going you know what we could go out and do this and have fun and hopefully if people are really trying to go hey what show can I go see I got enough to see one well we want to be hey there's
Starting point is 00:40:07 three acts here that can play a bunch of things and create an evening of a full fabric of the landscape of the 90s country, at least from the band perspective. So for us, it's kind of cool, you know, and you said it's kind of your soundtrack. It's our soundtrack, too. It's kind of cool. A kid who grew up at Mountain Pine, Arkansas, population 770 people, man, this is it. Like, this is what I go, I know exactly where I want. On the Bobby Bones show now.
Starting point is 00:40:30 The Frontman of Country. Richie McDonald from Lone Star, Tim Rushlow from Little Texas, and Larry Stewart from Restless Heart are here. And if you missed the first segment, go back and listen to it on the podcast. but you guys are touring, I have all your show dates here, from April to November, you guys are on the road. I mean, three big stars, three big tour buses, different jets. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:51 I mean. Three road managers. Yeah, right? Is this like the Eagles you don't get together until it's time to go on stage? Three bodyguards, yeah. Three minivans, actually. Are you guys doing the bus again? Like you get on the bus and going back on the road that way?
Starting point is 00:41:06 It looks like it. I don't know. We're going to do a lot of flight dates and a lot. a bus date yeah yeah we've got on some of the shows that we're booking now is gonna be with a band as well so we'll do some with just the three of us and some with the band behind us I'm
Starting point is 00:41:19 telling you if I were just getting to pick I would have no band I know the band to be great for but it's just to watch you and you I'm sure you're telling stories too in your show if it's just the three of you I mean this is prime time stuff the unplug show you get more of that where you know you get to hear the stories behind the songs the band shows are more power
Starting point is 00:41:35 because it's the full blown thing but yeah I'm with you the unplug thing's pretty cool So you guys go check them out. The frontman of country have all their tour dates up, starting in Grant, Oklahoma, on April 16th, and then all the way to the end of November. Where are all these dates? You guys have a website or what's happening here? Yeah, frontmanofcountry.com. And then, of course, all our socials and Facebook and all that stuff that everybody has.
Starting point is 00:41:56 So we're kind of all over. And there's, I mean, we just announced this. And so our agency with Bob Kincaid Entertainment just put that out. And so that's what just initially splashed up quick. And there's a ton more coming. We're, you know, we just haven't got them up yet. So are you guys, because you have, I mentioned earlier, you've sold over 30 million albums combined,
Starting point is 00:42:15 but are you guys working on new music as well? We actually did. Last year we went in and recorded a song called, If it wasn't for the radio, it's really a great song. Here are harmonies together, but also go back in and just hopefully make a little EP, finish it up. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:42:32 That'd be fun to do. Would you guys rather me play some of the studio version or play some if it wasn't for the radio yourself with your three voices and guitars and piano. Up to you guys. I say the record. Yeah, I'd go record on that one. Okay, well, let's hear.
Starting point is 00:42:44 Hey, Ray, give us some of, if it wasn't for the radio. Who's that? That's me. Okay. That's Richie. I'm playing songs about heartbreak. I might have never learned that sometimes you just got to let her go if it wasn't for the radio.
Starting point is 00:43:25 If it wasn't for the radio. Yeah, that's a soundtrack to my life. It makes you feel something real. Yeah, it hits home every time. And all those all this melodies wouldn't have a place to go. the radio if it wasn't for the radio. There comes that note, Bobby.
Starting point is 00:43:51 Here's that note. Oh, that is. It goes for it. It goes for it. Yeah, look at you guys. So, is there any sort of debate on which songs in the set list? Like, what's first when you do a show?
Starting point is 00:44:05 You got a lot of hits. What do you start with? That's a great question. We usually start with me doing that rock won't roll. Okay. What do you end with? That's usually, it's kind of easy.
Starting point is 00:44:17 because, I mean, we try to make the show flow, obviously, from, you know, for me, Larry to Mead, and Tim, but I usually think it's probably what you're going to. Was it God bless Texas? Yeah, absolutely. Because the crowd gets up, loves it. Yeah, and like, between Lone Star and Russell Star, there's a lot of tempo songs in the show, it's not just ballad heavy, but that definitely is the one that gets people kind of rowdy, you know. That's funny, because that song, when we put that out, we were on Warner Brothers at the time, and they were like, man, God, I don't know if you should put this out or not. This is regional at best.
Starting point is 00:44:49 I mean, it's just a Texas song. We were like, look, they're singing this in Salt Lake City loud. It's not even a single yet. Let's just put it out. So we did, and of course, it worked. Are you like, hey, knuckleheads, ever heard of Sweet Home Alabama? Oh, yeah. Right?
Starting point is 00:45:01 Yeah. I mean, there's like 10,000 of those songs. Well, let's act like we've been at a show. We've sang along all the hits. They've got one song left. The front minute country are going to play their last song. And, Tim, I'm going to hand it over to you. All right.
Starting point is 00:45:14 One, two, three. I've seen a lot of places I've been around the world I've seen some pretty faces been with some beautiful girls Well after all I've witnessed One thing still amazes me Just like a miracle
Starting point is 00:45:48 You have to see it believe I'll sing it at home, here we go Well, God bless Texas With his own hand Brought down angels from the promised land He gave him a place Where they could dance if you want to see heaven, brother, he's your chance. I've been sent to spread the message.
Starting point is 00:46:12 Come on, Bobby. Sing with me, ready? God bless Texas. Yeah, I've been sent to spread the message. God bless Texas. Come on. Okay, let me tell you what happened. While you guys were playing, every show member looked at me and was like, can we say?
Starting point is 00:46:34 Well, I like our audience to hear what it really sounds like. So if you wouldn't mind, maybe we can just go chorus only and we can let everyone sing the chorus with you. We took his cue, by the way, which was don't sing. It's an eye contact thing. Like, I look at him like I'm itching to sing, and he's like... Not yet. But we will.
Starting point is 00:46:54 But we wanted them to hear the front minute country do it first. All right, Tim, you ready? Do the chorus? Yeah, just the chorus. Let's go. One, two. One, two, three. Well, God bless Texas.
Starting point is 00:47:04 With his own hand brought down angels from the promised land He gave him a place where they could dance If you want to see heaven, brother, here's your chance I've been sent to spread a message It's all you, give it to us, come on. God bless Texas Yeah, I've been sent to spread the message Lifebox only. God bless Texas
Starting point is 00:47:31 Oh, you missed it, but don't get it. That's why I don't see. Nice job. Wow, wow, wow. Okay, let me tell you, they're at the frontman underscore. Couldn't get the frontman of country? Too many characters? Oh, is that true?
Starting point is 00:47:48 I don't know. You would know. Is that the rumor? Okay. Yes. Must be true. At the frontmen underscore. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:47:54 Yes? Okay. Okay. But then it's at the frontmen of country.com. Right. Right. I don't know. I sing.
Starting point is 00:48:02 I just. You guys have to go to a show. I have to go to a show. Yeah, it's so good. Let me see if you guys are... Are you guys coming near here? I don't see near here. Not yet.
Starting point is 00:48:11 I see Buda, Texas. I go to that one. Let's see. Yeah. Or, yeah, at the frontman underscore, you're on Twitter. I'm looking at it right now. Looking sharp.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Young, vibrant. Look at you guys. Right on. Oh, sure. Well, if you got time, we can do a quick 90-minute show for you right now. You know what? Do you guys know all the songs?
Starting point is 00:48:28 Uh-huh. All of our songs? Yeah. Like I'm saying, have you guys practiced every song that you're going to do on a show? Give a take, yeah. We throw us some wildcards. Sometimes crowds get nuts, and they'll say something that's not ours, and we'll go, oh, yeah, we'll do that. Like if I were going to go, I'm already there.
Starting point is 00:48:43 Would you guys know that one? I'm already there. Take a look around. I'm the sunshine in your hair. The shadow on the ground. Yeah, we would know that one. Okay, now Bobby, do more. Do more. Freebird!
Starting point is 00:49:03 Listen, I'm going to let them go. The front minute country. Come on. We can go all day. Massive fan of all three, you guys. Thank you. Such a massive fan. I don't know quite where to look when I talk
Starting point is 00:49:14 because I'm just trying to equally spend one third of time with each of you. Thank you for having us. You guys, it's Richie McDonald from Lone Star, Tim Rushlow from Little Texas, and Larry Stewart from Restless Heart. I will go to a show if you come near and I'm in town. I will go. That's the biggest thing I can say, the biggest vote of confidence. I can give you, but you don't need mine.
Starting point is 00:49:30 And my final question is, if you could put a fourth singer up on this stage, who would it be and why would it be Bobby Bones? Because he's a great singer and a great personality. We like that. We let us be on the show. You would totally be the MC host of the show, too. Boo, boo! No, you could sing.
Starting point is 00:49:47 Nice, yeah! All right. The front men of country. Thank you guys. Go check him out. Thanks for having us. It's the best bits of the week. With Morgan number two.
Starting point is 00:49:59 A super nostalgic one for a lot of us because all of us love Joe Nichols and he's released so many good songs over the years. He played Broken Heartsville. Yeah, I call it Tequila, but it's Tequila Mixer Clothes fall off. And all of these songs, he came on the show and performed him again. It was like taking a walk down memory lane with these. I mean, heartbreaking and party songs all in one and he still nails it. So this was a really epic performance. Number five.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Go on the Bobby Bones show now. Joe Nichols. How are you, buddy? I'm good, man. How are you? It's good to see you. You know, there's a lot of your music plays at my house right now. All the time.
Starting point is 00:50:38 I think maybe a month or so ago, my fiance was singing one of your songs. Maybe it was Broken Heartsville. She knew every word to it. And I was like, well, we need to record this. And then she's like, I know every Joe Nichols song. And so even on Instagram last week, she was dancing with the Bulldog. And it was to maybe it was to Broken Heartsville on Instagram too. So she's the biggest fan.
Starting point is 00:50:57 I was like, I know I've known Joe for 10 years at this point. And so she was going to come up here today and meet you. That didn't work out. So she sends her best. All right. Well, thank you. My best back. And that was a really good week because I got more text from friends over that on Instagram post.
Starting point is 00:51:13 Like, well, y'all don't pay attention to me unless Bobby Bones says, what's up? It wasn't even me. It was her. So Joe Nichols is here. We're going to talk about the new song coming up in a second, which, by the way, Home Run is the new track. and I feel like you're kind of back. I hadn't seen you in a while.
Starting point is 00:51:30 Like, is this like, hey, I'm kind of putting my foot back in the water? Like, let's do it again? Yeah, you know, a song like this kind of is good timing. You know, it's a reentry, like you said. It's been a little while since I've been on radio. And, man, I could use a home run right now. I mean, we could all use a hit, but it sure would be good timing. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:51:48 That seems like a good message, certainly with the world being crazy the last year and a half, two years, getting back to some stuff that's real feels real good. Let me play a clip with this home run. Ramon, do you got that over there? You got it to turn that south sun? You got to get out and do some shows now? There's a lot of the years looking like it's opening up quite a bit.
Starting point is 00:52:27 There's a lot of states that are opening. So a lot of venues, thank goodness. I'm seeing a lot of the smaller venues and the medium-sized venues that are able to kind of get back up, a little training wheels with them. So it's looking good, man. Joe has so many hits. He goes out and he plays songs and you're like, dang, I know every word of that song. Hey, I even have hits that people didn't realize.
Starting point is 00:52:47 I've had people come up to me after the show and go, why didn't you play the baby? Or any other Blake's, or some beach. I get that one all the time, too. So people think that are your hits. Right. They're like, I don't sing that. Come to the next show, maybe I'll do it then. But like when you look back at, for example, Broken Heartsville, 2002, isn't that crazy?
Starting point is 00:53:08 It's almost been 20 years? I know. Man, I've had a lot of story in between 2002 and here. A lot of it I wouldn't like to get into. But no, it's been a crazy fast, you know, 19 years, I guess. It's been crazy, man. I've been very fortunate. I saw a tweet from somebody one time that said, I have my.
Starting point is 00:53:27 more comebacks than the McRib. That's great. I can't even mad at that. That's good. I know you have a guitar up here and your player here. How are you, by the way? You good? Yeah, what's your name?
Starting point is 00:53:39 I'm Brian. Hey, Brian. Good to meet you. Would you give us just a little bit like verse and chorus of Broken Heartsville? Yeah, man. Or that cowboy had to cover up his home. Sweet talking, boy get tongue had a tempting shone. Before I turned around that girl.
Starting point is 00:54:21 gone all I can say is bartender pull me something strong here's to the past they can kiss my glass I hope she's happy with him here's to the girl who wreck my world that ain't too dead me I think the devil drives a cool de ville I watched him drive away over the hill Not against her will I've got time to kill Down in broken heartsville Nice, love it, come on Joe Nichols is here
Starting point is 00:55:11 Thank you So back in 2003 I was just kind of looking at this time period for a minute You were playing the Grand Ole Opry And a green bra Was tossed onto the stage And supposedly it was the first time that underground had ever been thrown
Starting point is 00:55:22 On the Opry stage And so at what point did you realize The bra was mine? Do you remember that moment, though? I do remember that moment, yeah. She got her brawback. She was, I think, a college student here somewhere in town at Vanderbilt, I think. And I remember it being so cool and then realizing, oh, no, I'm in trouble.
Starting point is 00:55:42 This is the opera. I'm going to go for that behavior here. But some of the old-timers thought it was pretty neat, too. One of those records that you're like, well, I did that. You know, we got number ones and stuff like that. But, hey, this guy got a bra phone at him on the opera. You're a Grammy-nominated artist, too. I know as you joke about people confusing you with Blake,
Starting point is 00:56:01 like sometimes people don't realize you were nominated for The Impossible, right? Yeah, The Impossible. I can name the ones I lost to, and I'm very proud. I lost to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, the Dixie Chicks, and maybe Vince Gill. How did you lose all four of them? Well, they were two separate years. It wasn't all that was, but it was Johnny Cash's last album, and he won album for the year.
Starting point is 00:56:26 and I think Baby Vince got vocal of the year, male vocal of the year. Next year, I think William Nelson's had a duet song that he won song with or male vocal performance and the Dixie Chicks won,
Starting point is 00:56:39 I think, album in the year again. Dang. Yeah, man. 0 for 4. 0 for 4. But do you feel like 4 for 4 and being Grammy nominated because that's pretty cool too?
Starting point is 00:56:47 Like, where do you sit on that? Positive or are like, dang, so close? Not to sound cliche, but I was shocked that I was even there. I was really shocked that they put my face on camera when they were calling the nominees knees out. I know it looked like an idiot up there amongst, you know, Yoko Ono was sitting over here and Queen Latifah was sitting over here. And I'm like, I don't think y'all got the
Starting point is 00:57:05 right guy. It was just kind of my face. And they were like, and for album, they put the camera on my face and I'm just looking at the camera like, this is uncomfortable. What do I do if I win? I walk up on the stage. I was probably trip somewhere, you know, probably can't spit words out of my face to save my life. I don't know. Probably glad I didn't win, really. Joe Nichols is here. You're not glad you didn't win. I'm not glad I didn't win. I got a certificate, though.
Starting point is 00:57:29 You do get a certificate for being a nominated artist. And I framed it. Yeah, I wanted to do. And had it melted into this gold-looking Grammy. So it looks like I won a Grammy. No, I got a certificate. Before you recorded, yeah, was that, did someone go, hey, Joe, this is a huge hit? Like, what was that process when you got that song?
Starting point is 00:57:47 When I got that song, I hadn't signed a deal yet. So I was still talking in some early stages with a couple of later. but I really needed that song to walk in an office with and say, here's our beginning of the album. And Mike Owens, I used to work with at Universal South, found this song, he said, man, this feels like a hit. He said it's a little, it's kind of current. And I was like, well, I kind of think we need to be current right now, you know.
Starting point is 00:58:11 And he gave me this song, and like, man, if we can pull that off where it feels big, that's going to be played on the radio a lot. Will we give us a little bit of yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he will give us to me a yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. It was just another night at a hayfield Just she climbed down on for them four wheels, yeah, yeah
Starting point is 00:58:41 As soon as that sun dress at the headlights, Every tailgate way out there was like, yeah, yeah She started walking over to me like she already knew me She sat down right beside me And asked if I was here alone And I said, yeah, yeah Like I was not a ride along to a song on the radio, yeah, yeah. How could I say, no, whatever you're drinking, that's when I'm drinking.
Starting point is 00:59:21 Girl, you're calling the shots tonight. Whatever you're thinking, that's when I'm thinking. Tell me what you got in mine so I can say, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice, Joe Nichols is here. Hey, what's home, what's home like for you right now? Are you on a farm? you have a bunch of land now i live on a golf course oh i never in my wildest dreams would ever believe i'd live on a golf course but it was is the nicest place we could find we could afford
Starting point is 00:59:56 not pretty good yeah did people ever hit a ball and go that's where joe nichols looks hit it hit it hit a ball enough away that it would be really bad and i think somebody did it on purpose so yeah every now in man i get in the golf cart and i have my own golf cart now which is cool it's kind more important than my truck now but it does have red velvet seating so Well, you just said no, and then went fancier. He just went, no, no, not at all. But it is gold-played at the headlights. It does have rims, and it's four by four.
Starting point is 01:00:24 But I mean, it's nothing. Joe, I'm going to run through some of your clips here. I got a bunch of a bunch of hits on a clip. Let's do a clip of Broken Heartsville. Just kind of... Is this to the most requested song when you play a show? Ooh, I think tequila is probably. It's a good point, too.
Starting point is 01:00:44 But I think more people talk about... that song, 10-year-olds to 80-year-olds say my favorite song ever is Broken Hardsville. So I think it's one of those that kind of lasts a little longer than most of my songs. Here's a clip of Tequila Makes Her Close Fall Off. Yeah, Tequila Makes Her Close Fall Off. Did this change everything for you? Did. Like, you had a big hit with Broken Hartsville, but did this song, was it like, boom, Joe Nichols
Starting point is 01:01:08 is now here to stay with a massive song? Yeah, and it was one of those comebacks. You know, we were coming off of one of those albums that didn't really have a lot of hit hits. You know, had some radio success, but the last single took like 50 weeks to kind of get really any airplay. And I was like, man, we need a big, strong song. And this came out and just pop. Sold a lot of records. And all of a sudden, I'm playing at the where the Titans play football.
Starting point is 01:01:30 I don't know what it's called now. Nissan Stadium. Yeah. Playing out there at the CMA Fest and the crowd knew it. And it was a pretty good moment. Yeah, that changed the game for me. That was one of my comebacks. Give me that girl, 2009.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Jam. This one had to be close, too. I mean, I would say not at, but this is a big one. It's still pretty solid. Everybody knows this song. Yeah. Believe it or not, you know, this is one of those songs that people want me to play at weddings. I'm like, is that a wedding song?
Starting point is 01:02:01 I mean, it's not like a slow dance song or anything, and it's just me, check me out playing my single. Yeah, it was a big song. It was my first multi-week number one hit, and it was another comeback. It was on a lull, you know, after a couple of hits, being gone. from radio for a year or two. Come back with Give Me That Girl and it kind of kicked it off again. The Impossible was nominated for Best Country Song for a Grammy.
Starting point is 01:02:30 You're nodding at this one. You like this one? Yes. Yeah. No, I like everything. This is like that slow. This is the one people should have you play. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:39 Yeah. Yeah. Not give me that girl. Sonny in 75 from 2013. somewhere somewhere was this another comeback yeah yeah this was after another couple of years being away from radio
Starting point is 01:03:01 this was the album that I signed with Redbow on and where we had yeah and we walked in like I said it had been a couple years being on for radio and we thought for a minute we were going to put yeah out first and the president of label Benny Brown he's always been amazing to me that guy is such a great great guy to meet he said want you try this out first I think we can have some success with this and of course it sounds
Starting point is 01:03:22 unlike a lot of my catalog you know so we tried it put it out there and it popped and it again changed the game again you know it kind of gave this a little bit of a catalog more of a field than just having a few hits it kind of started having more of a you know
Starting point is 01:03:38 nine 10 songs that people would would recognize uh well listen Joe I'm pumped that you're kind of back and you know you're here in the studio he's got a new song out we'll play some more over now this is home run shine my head a home run on it toward that south side I'll be touching bases with them faces
Starting point is 01:03:55 All the places I ain't been to in way too long What's the worst anyone's ever mispronounced your name On a big stage? I pulled up one of my first shows I did a radio show at a mall In Washington, D.C. And it said,
Starting point is 01:04:12 Today only, Jose Nicolas. And I was like, I don't know what's happening. Is this always happening like this? My first radio tour thing, And it was humbling, too, because you played in the mall as people were shopping. You know, kind of felt like, oh, we're the piano music in the lounge right now. Let me play my new single.
Starting point is 01:04:31 Wait, before you go in there. Stop and listen. Awkward stuff. Whenever tequila came out, you know, tequila makes your clothes. Did people just throw their clothes at you when you're performing? Like, were that common? Yeah, used to. I think probably now it's been around a little while, but when the song was, you know, really hot, getting play,
Starting point is 01:04:51 a lot I think people got loose with their clothes. Man, I had one that kind of ruined me. This lady threw some panties on stage one time and they were so big. I felt like there's nothing, there's no way you can respond to this because you can't laugh like, ah, somebody, because he could hurt their feelings
Starting point is 01:05:07 but then, I don't know, that kind of ruined me on that. So please keep clothes on because I never know how to take that. Well, listen, can you do a little bit of tequila? Before we go, we can play. Yeah, tune up over here. By the way, Shout out your player over here. This is Brian Spradlin.
Starting point is 01:05:24 He's been with me a long, long time. We actually did a lot of that radio stuff together back in 2002 and three and actually goes back before that. We played here in Nashville at Rippies on there in Fifth and Broadway. What was that like for you back in the day? Did people come in and go, wow, you're so good. You should get out off of Fifth and Broadway and be a real star, and you're like, man, I'm trying, but it was hard to get discovered.
Starting point is 01:05:43 Yeah, absolutely. That's exactly how it went. You know, we did good with tips, and there would be a lot of people that come in drunk and say, come see me this week. get in their office and they go, I don't remember seeing you. I got some good experience out of those years. I had some great, great times that I, that I remember. How did you get discovered? What was the moment? I went in and played for Tony Brown, who was at MCA. He's like, I want you to go over to my friend's office and play for him. His name's Tim Dubois, and those guys formed a record
Starting point is 01:06:11 label, and I was familiar with those guys' history, and that was my first single. And speaking of, the Impossible had climbed into, like, the top 30 or top 40. He was gone to, and he was going to radio doing really well and I was still playing on Broadway because that's the only place I can make money. So you had a song that was on the radio and you were still playing at the bars? 630 to 930 still in the bar. Were you doing covers like crazy? Yeah. Oh yeah. That's all you can do with one hit. Every 30 minutes he plays the hit again now. New crowds come in, new crowds out. I'm the guy from the radio. I'm not even playing a cover. You have to tell us that. This is my song. You probably heard it seven times today. All right. Joe Nichols is here.
Starting point is 01:06:45 Tequila makes her clothes fall off. A little bit of this and we'll call it a day. All right, here we go. I'm going out with my girlfriend's with our greatest at the holiday end. Oh, have mercy, my only thought was tequila makes her clothes fall off. I told her put an extra layer on. I know what happens when she drinks the throne. The closet's missing half the thing she balls.
Starting point is 01:07:33 Yeah, tequila makes her clothes all along. She'll start by kicking out of her. She's losing air ringing her drink in her drink. Leave her jacket and a bathroom stall. Them panty holes ain't going to last too long. If the DJ puts bon jovial, She might come home in a tablecloth. Yeah, tequila makes her clothes fall.
Starting point is 01:08:16 Makes her close fall. Oh, tequila makes her close fall. There is Joe Nichols. You guys, check guys' new song, Home Run. Go follow them on Instagram at Joe Nichols, not Jose Nicholas. No. Yes.
Starting point is 01:08:38 At Joe Nichols. Joe, great to see you. It's great to see you, man. Thank you. Hopefully we'll see you when you're making the tour for the number one. Go hogs. There he is. Joe Nichols, everybody.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Thank you. It's the best bits of the week with Morgan number two. A super emotional one for me. Maybe for some other members of the show, I'm not sure. But Edwin McCain came on and he performed All Be and I could not ask for more, which for me are two very emotional country songs because they've always been that way for me. But he came on and that was another nostalgic moment that we all were just like, wow,
Starting point is 01:09:15 what is life right now? Edwin McCain is performing all. be. But Hillary, I want to talk about some, for lack of a better term, vintage artists that you would love to see at a concert. Like 90s countries. Yeah. Contrist. 90 country artists. I'm combining so many words lately. I know. I was like, how vintage are we doing? Because I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. Well, vintage, I've been told by the older generation that vintage is a better word than like elder. So vintage is like they're cool and they're like a collectible. I feel like who, you know, who would be so much fun to see in concert is Reba.
Starting point is 01:09:50 Oh, yes. Like getting to sing fancy along with her at a show because she's so, I love Reba. I feel like she can be so sassy, but she's so sweet. I just, I love Reba, so I'd love to see her in concert. Well, and I think we were all at the show when it was her, Dolly, and Carrie hosting the CMAs. Yes, we were. And we did get to see a performance of hers. That's not the same as a concert, but we did get to see her perform a song.
Starting point is 01:10:15 And just that one song, we're like, wow, this is amazing. I think it was fancy. Because she was an all red. Yes. And she just brings out the sass and she's so entertaining. And she's so like, I would use the word theatrical. Like if you watch all her music videos too, like it is a movie. Well, you can tell that she also has that actress side to her.
Starting point is 01:10:34 Yes. She's very good at that. Yes. So like she can bind it all into one massive career. I actually do think because Riba, she's been doing a lot of shows with Brooks and Dunn. So I want to make that my thing, Reba with Brooks and Dunn. Oh, aren't they doing Vegas? again or am I making that up in my head? Because I know they did before. I feel like I did hear that.
Starting point is 01:10:52 So I feel like that would be such a fun show to go see as those two artists together. Oh yeah. Epic because not only are they like great musicians on their own right, they're like friends too. Right. And they have they'll perform together. So they have that Cowgirls Don't Cry song, which is really sad. Yes. But yeah, they're just, they're great artists. They sound great together. And I think that would be such a fun show to go see. I agree. There's one that I'm super bummed that I missed out on because I didn't even know what was happening. Again, we're like getting back in the swing. I'm going to concerts and stuff.
Starting point is 01:11:21 Yes. But it was Alabama's show here in Nashville. I had no idea either. Like Tim McGraw went up on stage. There was a multiple different country artists that were there. I heard Martina McBride was there too, and I'm really pumped about it. Like that, like I wish. So like I know they're about to go on a crazy tour across the country.
Starting point is 01:11:38 Yeah. So if you get a chance to go see Alabama, I feel like that's the tour to go see. Yeah. Because from what I know it was insane here in Nashville. Of course it's Nashville too because everybody's here. and bring special guests out. Right. But I'm so bummed that I missed that show.
Starting point is 01:11:51 Did you know what our phone screener Abby went? No. That's how I found out about it. She was going to come to my house that night and she texted me. And she was like, hey, so is it okay if I don't come tonight? Alabama's playing a Martina McBride's going to be there. And I'm like, wait, what? Like, first of all, what's going on?
Starting point is 01:12:09 And how did I not know about this? Absolutely, you can go, don't worry about coming to my house. You can come any time. Please go see that show. I had no idea. No idea either. And I'm also like, I know a few Alabama songs a little bit older than me, so I'm not a huge Alabama fan. But there's a few of their songs that very much like bring back some nostalgic for me.
Starting point is 01:12:27 It's still fun. Even if you don't know all of an artist's songs, still having those songs that do remind you of a childhood or remind you of just something. It's just fun to go hear those songs. Then you still have fun. Yeah, you go for one song and you'll end up staying for the whole party. Like that's the whole point of a concert. Yeah. So I feel like that's one that I would have loved to see, but that opportunity kind of would have.
Starting point is 01:12:46 out the door already. But there was another one that I was thinking. Well, so I saw Lone Star in concert. And I, like, I saw them at Whiskey Jam in Nashville. It wasn't a full-blown concert. I would love to see them full-blown in concert. I loved Lone Star. Amazed, Mr. Mom, like, all of those songs.
Starting point is 01:13:09 I've never seen them at, like, a full-blown show. And that would be one I would love to see. And they still sound amazing. Yes. Him, Richie? Oh, my. goodness his voice. We were standing side stage and we were just sitting there watching and I'm like, oh my gosh,
Starting point is 01:13:22 because some artists, like, it just naturally happens. They just don't sound as strong as they did. Like if they have those massive vocal songs, he crushed it. Like he, even when he came on the show, like he's just a great vocalist. Yes. Well, and Amy Grant was on our show recently talking about that, how she had to like knock down some octaves because her voice had changed over time. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:43 Just a natural progression of life. It just happens, yeah. Which, by the way, I didn't know until after Amy Grant was on our show. But apparently I was in like three of her shows back in Kansas. What? Her like concerts. Yeah. So you know how Eddie's kids went and sang with Amy Grant?
Starting point is 01:13:59 Yes. She still does that now. But like back when I was a kid, so like 20 years ago, when I was in school, our little choir group from school got to be on stage for her performances. You performed with Amy Grant? Yes. Like three different times. My parents told me. And I was like, wait, what?
Starting point is 01:14:16 Oh, my gosh. She probably would have loved to know that if you would have remembered when she was here. Well, and as soon as, like, my parents told me that, you know, and somebody tells you something and your memory gets unlocked? Yes. That's what happened to me. And I was like, oh, my gosh, I remember dressing like an angel. That is so funny.
Starting point is 01:14:32 She was, I will say, Amy Grant, I texted Mike D because I go get all the artists from the parking garage and bring them in. And Amy Grant was one of the kindest humans. I told Mike, I said, there's just something. about her like I don't know she's like glowing she's just like an actual angel on earth she's so sweet and so kind and just I don't know she just hung on to every word I was saying and was just so polite yes and like even in our interview just very soft spoken and down to earth like nothing needed to be showing nothing needed to be this whole production it was just like talking to two people. Yeah, she was definitely one of my favorite guests who's been on the show. I love that.
Starting point is 01:15:17 Yeah, she was just so nice. And that's a massive star. It is. And because I talked to her after the show, because I'll bring them in and then take them back out. And we were talking about the camp that she has. She briefly touched on it during our interview and just hearing how she wants to help kids and bring kids together at such a young age to not care about, you know, if you came from money or not, or race or anything like that. And starting them at a young age to like let them have fun together. She is just, she is such a sweetheart and you can tell. Like she's an amazing human being.
Starting point is 01:15:53 Well, and too, I mean, she's in the sweetheart couple of country music with Amy Grant and Vinskill. So yes. Why are we surprised? Another person who came in who was very kind to me. Yes. I'm just always surprised when people sit there and talk to me. He said. But Vince did. He was so nice, too. I know. And I just feel like something with them, whenever they just get bigger, it's like they just are glad people treat them like humans.
Starting point is 01:16:14 Yeah. You know, I mean, because that's how Garth is, just very like human. Yeah. Just having real conversation with them, not, you know, and it's fine. I know they love that people connect to their music, but just being able to have those real human conversations with them is not about their music. Like, hey, how's the weather outside? Right. like Trisha, speaking of Garth, Trisha Yearwood came in and it was when we were in our temporary studio and she came into where I was sitting at and she saw my desktop and it was just like a mess all over the place. She goes, I'm the same way.
Starting point is 01:16:45 People get all over me and I was like, yes, people do to me too. She was like, I just connected with Trisha Yearwood. This is so cool. I love those. I mean, people would love to hear those stories from you because it genuinely shows that they are just humans. Yeah. I probably have so many just from going to getting them and just having those few minutes just to talk. and connect with them.
Starting point is 01:17:05 It's definitely, it's fun. It's cool. No, there's a little behind the scenes that Hill just shared with us. So fun. Okay, what about, what is your favorite 90s country song? Oh, man. I know, I'm making things very difficult. This is so hard.
Starting point is 01:17:21 I feel like it's a toss-up between any man of mine by Shania Twain. Love it. Or this kiss by Faith Hill. Oh, so, so good. I am a very big Faith Hill fan. Yeah, as you. you should be. I love Faith Hill. Mississippi girl, like I'm not from Mississippi. I'm from Florida and I will jam out to that song. Well, I feel like to all of these artists, it's funny
Starting point is 01:17:43 that you say that. I had like, I couldn't choose a song. Yeah. I had albums that I thought of. And Faith Hill's that, this kiss album, I don't know what the title, the album was called. Let me see if I can find it. It might have been. Would it have been this kiss? I can't think either. Let's see. Faith Hill. Breathe. Breathe. I think that's that. That's a great song too. I'm pretty sure that's that same out. It's the first thing that popped up on Google, so if I'm wrong, don't yell at me. We're just going to go with it.
Starting point is 01:18:10 Yes. But that, I mean, that one. Yes. It was all females. Like, I love that our parents were like, just listen to whatever you want. We chose the women of I-Hart country. Yes. Because then there was Shania Twain's Come On Over album, which had any man of mine and all of her
Starting point is 01:18:27 very massive hits. Once we still sing to this day. Yes. And then there was the chicks, Wide Open Spaces album. Yes. All like three that you just listened to on repeat if you were a kid. Oh, yeah. And I think, I'm trying to think what Martina album would have been from the 90s because
Starting point is 01:18:44 that's what I would have been listening to. That would be the one with her Independence Day, right? Yes. Would it have been her greatest hits album? If greatest hits was from the 90s, then that's the album I listened to, like, the most was that one. I'm with you. I mean, those were that and Reba, I think were the five that were like the really,
Starting point is 01:19:02 Yeah. That's what I was listening to when I was a kid. Oh, wait. It might have been on her album Emotion. Is that right? Yeah, maybe. Yeah, because that has Love's the Only House. Great song.
Starting point is 01:19:15 Oh, great song. I'm trying to think when her greatest hits album came out. Martina, we're Googling things right now. We just want to make sure we're accurate. And it's just like based on what is kind of, you're right. It might have been, yeah, it's on greatest hits album. Oh, that came out in 2001. Well, you know what?
Starting point is 01:19:31 It's close enough to net the 90s. Technically, 2001, we'd still be young. Well, in most of these, yeah, me and Morgan were both born in 93. But most of these songs on the greatest hits would have all been from the 90s. Yeah. So I'm going with that. It came somewhere in there. But like, I would say that.
Starting point is 01:19:46 Like, Shania Twain, the chicks. Faith Hill, Fifth. I told you. I'm so bad at words right now. Faith Hill, Martina McBride, and Reba. Yeah. We're really the five artists. I grew up later on in life-loving Dolly, but I didn't listen to Dolly as a kid.
Starting point is 01:20:00 I didn't either. It was like those main women you just named. And I'm making sure I'm not missing anybody else. But those are the five that I, I mean, then I like grew on to listen to all the other, like, smaller country female artists. Yeah. But I feel like those were like the main five women. I think so too. I can't think of anybody else.
Starting point is 01:20:19 And again, I'm sure we're forgetting somebody. But those were, yeah, that's basically what I listened to. Well, that kind of answers my next question is like what were the artists that you listened to the most growing up? Definitely, Martina. Allen. And then I'm going to throw these two out there just because I was younger, but Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, because I wasn't able to drive when they came out. Like, I was still young. I was still living in my parents' house sitting on the floor in my bedroom listening to their albums. Mom would take me on album release day to go to the store and get their albums because I couldn't
Starting point is 01:20:51 drive. So I would say those four were the main ones I listened to growing up. Before you would say, like, you were 20. Yeah. I would say it would be that age for you. I was under the age of 15. Well, because Taylor Swift. We were 14, I think. We would ride a bit about the time that we could start to get like a learner's permit. Yeah. Because I remember.
Starting point is 01:21:12 I remember exactly, and I may have talked about this on the other podcast we did. I remember where I was exactly, like the road I was on, who I was with when I first heard a Taylor Swift song. And me and my friends couldn't drive. I was with my best friend, Sarah. Her mom was driving. And Taylor Swift came on. And it was our song? Or Tim McGraw?
Starting point is 01:21:31 It would have been Tim McGraw. And I was like, who is this? And she said, it's Taylor Swift. And I was like, all right, I'm going to get her album. I feel like, I think Tim McGraw is the first one she put out. Yes. But our song is the one that really shot her up. Like, Tim McGrawl started it.
Starting point is 01:21:44 Yeah, Tim McGrath started it. But then our song came out and like solidified it. Yeah, I would say that. Because I think off the album, it was Tim McGraw, Picture to Burn. Oh, picture to burn. Nope, that's the song I'm thinking of. Tear drops on my guitar in our song. I think were the singles from that album.
Starting point is 01:21:59 I think I'm thinking of it. Whatever followed Tim McGraw? There was a song that followed Tim McGraw. Teardrops on my guitar followed Tim McGraw. Because there was a, I know all these random facts. I know. But they were, I don't know why in all these things. They were nervous about putting two ballads back to back. So that's how I do know that for a fact. And then it may have been, for some reason I want to think it was Picture to Burn and then our song. Okay, no, I think you're right. Because Picture to Burn, there was one of her upbeat songs that I feel like really like just catapulted her.
Starting point is 01:22:26 Well, our song is still played now. So it may be that one. But it wasn't the two ballads because I remember the ballads and I loved them. They were what she first put out. But I just remember it being like such a crazy moment because it was like this young new female and she's coming out on fire. Yeah. Like every song is just shooting straight to the top and she's an amazing writer. She writes all her stuff.
Starting point is 01:22:48 Well, and because it might have been tear drops on my guitar because so when I saw and met Taylor Swift right before she blew up was in Wichita at a teeny tiny theater. for free. And the next week, she was on the CMAs, and the song she performed is what blew her up. And it might have been teardrops on my guitar, but I want to say it might have been pictured a burn. Actually, I'm wondering, I'll have been talking this whole conversation. There was an award show where she performed Tim McGrath because she, we talked about this on our show with Tim, because she walked down to him, and that was the first time she met him.
Starting point is 01:23:20 She performed the song and then walked down to him. Yes, but that was later. I'm Taylor, and it was really awkward. Yes, but that was later, because that wasn't her first. first ever performance. I don't think. Were you talking, are you talking about, no, she would have performed on an award show because she did, no, that should have said no, where she did the water one. Oh yeah. No, this was her first ever appearance in performance. She won like three different awards that night, like best new artist. I would have thought she would have performed Tim McGraw just because it
Starting point is 01:23:48 was her first single, but I don't know. Maybe. I'm going to have to go back in the archives. I mean, maybe I'm getting them all confused because they all kind of happened right at that same moment. Yeah. But, and maybe two, Picture of Byrne was just on repeat. for me for so long because it was such a good song same the whole album was like that's all I listened to and that album came out was Taylor Swift yes but yeah yeah so I'd say that but she but still like like one to 10 you aren't listening to Taylor Swift yet she had to come out with music yet she's about our age yeah she's just a few years older than us but yeah or Alan Brooks and Dunn did you say them um I said Martina and Allen yeah we did a little bit we didn't really have
Starting point is 01:24:28 have their albums. My dad, because obviously we weren't driving, so I just listened to whatever my dad had in his truck. We had Martina, Alan Jackson, and George Strait. Those were the three that the albums that we had in his truck that we listened to. He still, I think, has that little CD holder and has all these CDs still in it. Yeah, all the CDs. Oh, man.
Starting point is 01:24:51 Yes. That seems like so long ago. I actually still have that in my car right now out in the parking garage. I have my, it's like a big old thick stack of CDs. It's my CD case. It's in my car right now. That's funny. Yeah, we'll have to go through it one day.
Starting point is 01:25:02 The fact that you still have those. Oh, yeah, and that it's in my car if I need it. Because what if something happened in my Bluetooth wouldn't connect? You're like, let me just pop in a CD real quick, kids. Yeah, that's what we're going to do. We're going to pop in a CD because I've got a bunch of them in there. Oh, my goodness. This seems like so long ago, especially because we had iPods and stuff too.
Starting point is 01:25:21 Like, CDs are not around a long time for us. I feel like even when all of that, like when iPods and everything came out, I was still wanting to listen to my little CDs. I still did, but like not as much as I had used to when they were, when there was no iPod. As soon as iPods, like, hit in Limewire and you could download songs. Oh my gosh, illegally download songs. Yes. Not an infection. Virus to your computer. Virus to your computer. See, we do remember some things that the older generation did. It's just we didn't have as a long time with them. Right. We didn't. We're only 28, 27. Yep. about to be 28.
Starting point is 01:26:00 Yep. I'm not ready for it. 28, I feel like I was okay with 28. 27 was a hard one to turn, but 28 wasn't that bad. So weird how they're all like different. I think it'll just depend how I'm feeling in that month. Yeah. You'll be good.
Starting point is 01:26:14 We're going to have fun. Don't know what we're going to do for your birthday yet, but we'll have fun. It's coming up. I can't believe it's already July. I cannot believe we are in July right now. I know. We're already past the 4th of July, about to be August. It's so true they say like as you get older, like time just passes faster.
Starting point is 01:26:28 It does. And I think that's when we start to appreciate more because we realize how much time does go by and how much time we do waste. So, yeah, it does. Like when you're younger and you're in college, you're like, oh my gosh, everything moves so slow. Yeah, because we're like taking tests and having your write papers. Yeah. I remember being in college, like, I cannot wait for the day that I don't have to write a paper ever or take another test, which I still don't want to ever have to write another paper or take another test. But, I mean, I remember just I couldn't wait. to get out and I wish I would have enjoyed it a little more and slowed down a little. I know. So if your college could listen to this right now, slow down. Enjoy it. We are officially those old people that's telling you to slow down. Yes, because then you have to become a real official adult. It's not fun. It's not fun. It's not fun, let me tell you. Oh, man. Okay, well, here is Edwin McCain. You know, I'm probably going to cry after that segment because I'm old. And these are making me feel old, but it was so good.
Starting point is 01:27:25 He performs I'll be and I could not ask for more. Number four. On the Bobby Bones show now. Edwin McCain. I'm a big fan. I tell you guys, when I was in college, I saved up all my money and I went across and O.B.U. was the school where the rich kids went. And Edwin was playing the rich kids school.
Starting point is 01:27:44 And I was like, I love Edwin McCain. Saved up my tickets. I got in the very back of the theater and I watched him play for an hour and a half, him and a horn player. And it was really, I remember so much about it, Edwin. So I'm super glad you're here. I don't have to pay for this show. I feel like maybe we jipped you for only showing up with a guitar and saxophone.
Starting point is 01:28:03 But, you know, we played in any iteration back then. We could show up and play however. So, yeah. I was looking at your TikTok here, and that's actually what brought you here. It's so bizarre. This whole thing, how I got here. Anybody tells you that they have a plan in the music business. They're just lying.
Starting point is 01:28:24 It's just all accidental. It's a complete accident. My entire life is a giant accident. I was obviously a big fan growing up, and then I'm flipping TikTok, and I see you singing with people doing, I'll be your, and I'm like, holy crap, he's playing. Let's get him on the show. And so we call you, and you're like, yeah, I'll be right over,
Starting point is 01:28:42 and here you drove over. I'm so, I'm just shocked. I was like, people are like, why are you going on there? I was like, I don't know. I have no idea why there. I was like, I'm going to play a couple clips real quick in case you've been living in Iraq. Under a rock, here's I'll Be.
Starting point is 01:28:58 And here is, I could not ask for more. I could not ask for more. Yeah. Yeah. It goes hard. It is a little aggressive. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:29:16 Like, you know, that's begging to have a parody video. You know, somebody throwing a bouquet of roses at their girlfriend. Yeah. Is it true? And you can true or false me on this. got your record deal because Darius and the hoody guys were like you got to sign this guy. Pretty much. Yeah. No, I was with, I was with them when they got signed to Atlantic and they basically said, yeah, we're bringing him with us. And they were like, yeah, whatever, we'll take him too.
Starting point is 01:29:43 And, you know, they, and it was, yeah, it's a miracle. I spent my life trying to repay those guys for what they did for me. And I say this all the time, like, if you haven't read Malcolm Gladwell's book outliers. Everyone, especially if you're in your 20s and you're trying to figure out what you're going to do with your life, read that book because the importance of timing can't be overstated. Like, I worked really hard. I'll never deny that. But when I was, was as important as anything I did. The timing was perfect. Everybody was tired of grunge. They just got, they were so tired of staring into their lint-filled belly buttons, and then Hootie and the Blowfish came along,
Starting point is 01:30:28 and we were like, we have friends again, yay, and whoever that guy is, yeah, we like him too. And that was it. You know, we were just really, really right place, right time. Edwin McCain is here. He's going to play in a second. Well, actually, I'd like to do this. The TikTok that I saw him, that brought him back into my life,
Starting point is 01:30:46 was him duetting with someone, because he would play the first part of I'll be, and they would sing the second. And I thought I was going to jump in and do it to do it to do. one too but it just hurt. You should do it. But Amy is over here and I think we can try this. I'll be Edward and Amy. Oh boy. I'll be captivated. Hang from your lips. Stead up on the gallows heart ache that hang from above. Your crying shoulder I'll be love suicide.
Starting point is 01:31:30 And I'll be better when I'm older. I'll be the greatest fan of your life. Yes, you will. Yeah, it's pretty good. That's good. Hey, what does that mean? Love Suicide, by the way. Like, help me.
Starting point is 01:31:47 I've been singing it for 20 years. I don't know what it means. You know, I was pretty good at screwing up relationships in my early 20s. And that was sort of the explanation for it. you know I would I didn't do I didn't do very well so I was the end of them
Starting point is 01:32:07 so I that was how the line came out and it's funny because the record company and every producer I ever worked with tried to get me to remove that line and I was just like I said I'm I have the oppositional defiance disorder and I never you know it just
Starting point is 01:32:23 dug my heels in and refused to change the lyric and and and and that actually ended up working in my favor because when Hillary Duff re-released the song on a soundtrack, they edited out that lyric. And I was like, you can't do that?
Starting point is 01:32:39 And I called my lawyers. I was like, they can't? They were like, no, they can't. And I was like, okay. So that's how I have my bus now. Yeah. Thanks, Hillary. We've thought about changing the name
Starting point is 01:32:53 to the bus to Hillary's Duff. Edwin McCain is here. How about this? Let's do a verse and chorus of I'll be, because I'm going to ask you to do something else too. So we don't verse and chorus. Let's all close our eyes. Oh, yes. And picture ourselves. Okay.
Starting point is 01:33:09 The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful, stop me, steal my breath. Embrows from mountains, thrust towards the sky, never feeling their death. And table along together, dress it up with the trappings of love. I'll be captivated. Hang from your lips, stalled out on the gallows of heartache that hang from above. The greatest fan of your... The horn, come on. The estrogen bazooka, as we like to call.
Starting point is 01:34:32 Let me ask you this. You ever see a saxflare with a personality? No. They don't need it. Well, I'd like to hear, if I can keep requesting songs, this is my favorite part of my job. It's when I have people come in that I really like, and I can go, hey, do this.
Starting point is 01:34:47 If you don't mind, I could not ask for more, which may have been my jam even more than I'll be. And then Sarah Evans did a great job on this song, too. This is a big thing for her. I'm lying in here with you, listening to. Smile in just to see Smile upon your face These are the moments
Starting point is 01:35:17 And I thank God that I'm alive These are the moments And I remember all my life I've got all I've waited for And I could not ask for more Here comes the aggressive part God ask for more than this time to give. Good not ask for more than this time with you.
Starting point is 01:35:48 And happy prayer, I'm true. Edwin, what we came. Come on. That's awesome. Love to having you here. I think you guys would all say the same thing, right? Yes, of course. This is awesome.
Starting point is 01:36:27 Great interview. Great performance. And when you're 80 and you have to take it down a couple, and you want to come and sing it again. I'm going to be like Mali Crew and just play to tracks. Just sing to tracks. You can do that. They do that?
Starting point is 01:36:40 Well, pop stars do. There's a track playing, and they sing over and under it and everything else. Oh, like the last, I went to, I'm a huge crew fan, and I went to the, you know, they had more fire and tracks underneath. I was like, oh, okay, this is what you do. Yeah, and nobody faults them for it. Go for it. People were there for the experience. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:36:58 All right. There he is. Edwin McCain. Nice job. It's the best bits of the week with Morgan number two. Travis Denning came on our show and he has some great songs. of his own, but this time he performed a cover of Blink 182's What's My Age Again? And something about Travis Denning.
Starting point is 01:37:18 Performing such an awesome alternative song was just insane. Like, he really dominated this cover. So if you missed it, this is also one to listen to. Number three. On the Bobby Bone Show now. Travis Denning. Travis has co-hosted the show. Travis has had a number one song with After a Few.
Starting point is 01:37:37 Gonna play a little bit of this. Here you go. But after. He was voted the prestigious CRS 2021 new face. Yeah. Travis Denny is here. I've been told I need a new face. Okay.
Starting point is 01:37:54 I'm sorry. Godly. So this is what happened. I was doing this thing on TikTok where I said, hey, Stitch and put you playing after I say this. And I want to see you. We're going to bring some people up. Well, Travis goes, I like to make a submission and play the little part that you played
Starting point is 01:38:08 on the TikTok. That was in a cut. And he goes, I wrote this. And it's obviously Blink 182. What's my age again? And so I hit him up. I was like, Travis, come play that on the show. I'd love to hear Blink 182 on a banjo.
Starting point is 01:38:24 Now, did you have to learn the whole song after? Oh, absolutely. Last night. I sat there and woodshed it this whole thing. I was obviously a huge Blink fan growing up, but just did not really learn the words as a, you know, eight-year-old. So I learned him as a 28-year-old last night.
Starting point is 01:38:39 Okay, well, before we talk about anything else, here he is. with his banjo. It is Travis Denning playing Blink 182. Here we go. I'm so nervous. I took her out.
Starting point is 01:38:53 It was a Friday night. I walk alone to get the feeling right. We started making out. She took all my pants. Then I turn on the TV. That's about the time she walked away from me. Nobody likes you when you're 23. And I'll still more amused by TV shows.
Starting point is 01:39:11 What the hell is ADD? My first say I should have my age. What's my age again? my age again later on on the drive home I called her mom from a pay phone I said I was a cops and your husband's in jail and stale's down on the TV that's about the time that girl hung up on me no one they like you when you're 23 and I'll see more amuse I take a breakball cause what the hell is wrong with me my friends say I should have my age what's my age again what's my age again
Starting point is 01:39:50 There he is. Travis Denny. Come on. Can you play any song on that? Could you play the chorus of After a Few? Absolutely. All right, here we go. In my banjo voice?
Starting point is 01:40:01 Yeah, yeah. You can do verse and chorus. After a few drinks, it's always the same thing. We find ourselves Austin conversation at the bar. After a few songs, the kind that you hold home, we find ourselves leaning up against my car. So to stop day, one. Say goodbye giving a pet too If we didn't want to wind up
Starting point is 01:40:25 Falling into my bed Like we always do After a few Oh yeah He has to do that every time That's the out regardless of this Hey when we get back on the road The whole set's full band
Starting point is 01:40:48 And then just banjo solo After a few What's your guitar story? How old were you when you finally started to go I can actually play real songs? So I saying I brought me my guitar when I was 11. And so, yeah, I started playing then.
Starting point is 01:41:02 And when I was like six or seven, that's kind of when I was really starting to really get a good grasp on it. And actually my parents told me at that point, you know, I had some cheap starter guitar. They were like, hey, we know you're taking it seriously and we kind of want to challenge you. If you'll learn stairway to heaven front to back, like no stops, no messed up notes, we'll buy you whatever guitar you want. And so I spent the next like four months with my. my guitar teacher. And parents came home from work one day, and I was like, all right, come upstairs.
Starting point is 01:41:33 I got it. And played it for them. And they bought me my first Gibson, Les Paul. That's what I wanted so bad. And I literally just recorded two new songs and played that guitar on both songs. I still use it to this day. Can you still play the opening lick from Stairway to Heaven? Oh, hey.
Starting point is 01:41:49 On banjo? Man, I'm going to get smited for half these licks. This is just like anti-rock and roll, but we're doing it. There's a late. is sure all the glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway
Starting point is 01:42:13 by heaven just sounds country I gotta finish with it okay when she gets there she knows if the stores all are clothes
Starting point is 01:42:24 with the world she can get what she came for I don't know no no no no no who it's good though There he is.
Starting point is 01:42:37 Travis Denning. So we've talked about this before, but your girlfriend, who's not a fiancé yet? Not yet. Right. But eventually, right? I'm not even going to pressure you on that.
Starting point is 01:42:47 But I mean, it's the idea that you'll be... You sound like everybody in my life right now, actually. I'm not going to pressure you, but when's it happening? Well, I'm not asking that, but Madison is John Michael Montgomery's daughter. Do you learn his songs? You know, I actually don't know any of his songs. The one song I do know by heart, though,
Starting point is 01:43:05 letters from home because that's I've got like four songs in country music that are an automatic like cry song and that that's one of them. Just that song just gets me. So I know all the words of that one. Favorite 90s country song that you will play in your set? Do you have any? Oh yeah.
Starting point is 01:43:20 Church on Cumberland Road by Shenandoah. Okay, well let's hear a little bit of that on the banjo. This is not rehearsed by then. Just about a mile off of 109. There's a little church sitting back in the pines. Promise that girl She was gonna be mine I wouldn't be surprised
Starting point is 01:43:40 She was standing there crying Oh Didn't know what born out for Could go so slow Said I want to put your foot down On the floor Yeah we've been walking on now
Starting point is 01:44:01 But don't you know You gotta give me to the church On the Cumberland Road Yeah Come on, that's awesome Well listen, you came up here only because I was like, you got to come play. Blank 12. So I appreciate you doing that.
Starting point is 01:44:17 You guys check out Beer's Better Cold. It's Travis's EP. He's got the big hit with After a Few. David Ashley Parker. Where's that beer been? Travis Denning. Follow him. Travis R.
Starting point is 01:44:30 Dending on Instagram. Funny guy. Hey, great job today, by the way. He's coming in dominating. Bobby Bones. It's the best bits of the week With Morgan number two Brett Eldridge came on our show
Starting point is 01:44:48 He's been on the show a few times in the last few months But this time he performed an unreleased song It's called I Want That Back And we posted about it online And everybody wanted him to drop the song Like immediately It was so good But Hill I want to know
Starting point is 01:45:03 What's a song that you heard when it dropped And you immediately loved it and had it on repeat? The first one I can think of off the top of my head is Better Man by Little Big Town. Oh, great song. I remember, so I got to hear it early, one of the perks of radio. I was sitting, I was in Charleston. I was sitting in my program director's office and he called me in there. He was like, hey, I want you to hear this song because he knew I'd love it.
Starting point is 01:45:28 And he played it for me. And I remember just sitting there and I'm like, can you play that again? I need to hear that again. And I don't know, that song really, like, struck me. And then finding out Taylor Swift Road, I'm like, well, duh, that's why. But yeah, that song, I remember just downloading it and listening to it over and over and over again in my apartment. Just all the time I was listening to that song. And that's a really good song.
Starting point is 01:45:54 I mean, Little Big Town is underrated in so many ways. They're harmonies on every song, but that song especially. I mean, Karen Fairchild, it's just her voice is so stunning. and it really just makes you feel something. That song, I mean, I was in a very sad place whenever that song came out, so it's probably why I really loved it. But even if you weren't,
Starting point is 01:46:15 I feel like the way the story, or the song tells a story in Karen's voice, it really does just, it makes you feel. Yes, and you do very much enjoy ballads. Oh, yeah. Like, I have a sad playlist on my phone. They're all ballads. I just, and I listen to it all the time.
Starting point is 01:46:32 And that's your normal playlist. That's not like she goes to when she's, sad. That's like her normal playlist. Oh yeah. Just riding in the car or I have a sad CD. It's in my CD case. I have a sad CD. I like if I'm just going for a walk or riding around in my car, I'll just put on my sad playlist. I love it. So interesting to me because like I cannot listen to sad music unless I want to cry. That's like my I have to listen to that purposely to like cry or be in my feels. Otherwise I have to listen. I have to listen and watch like good things. There are sometimes I have to catch myself because it can put me and like,
Starting point is 01:47:05 a sad mood but for the most part yeah i love listening to sad music like it's just it is my favorite it makes me feel something and it just it brings back memories too of things a fun fact about hillary right there yeah love sad music love sad things well and that makes sense for your choice and song and then my choice and song is definitely not anything close to a ballad sam hunts leave the night on oh yeah okay yeah i mean yeah i mean as soon as it wasn't even like released to radio when I first heard it and I just went hard jamming on it. I mean, I think I overplayed it. By the time it hit the radio, I was like, wait, I've already heard this like 5,000 times. Can we not play it? I feel that way about all of Sam Hunt songs.
Starting point is 01:47:48 Like that is definitely somebody. I know people hate on him, but his albums and songs are so good and so catchy. I'll just put on his CDs and just listen to him all the time. Yeah, and you can listen to him on a repeat and they don't get old until you've listened like 5,000 times. And then at that point, you have to get new Sam Hunt songs. Yes. I think his newest album, Breaking Up, was Easy in the 90s. That was the song that I immediately was drawn to and listened to all the time. Such a great idea of a song that I'm surprised nobody had.
Starting point is 01:48:21 Nobody's done it. Put together that idea yet. Yeah, it was such a cool and interesting concept because I feel like we've talked about that before, about how social media just makes things so much harder and how we can so easily check on what somebody's doing and that's hard and that sucks. Yes. And 90s are very in right now. And so he played on our nostalgia that we're feeling. Yeah. And our hatred for social media even though we're all on it. I know. And it's like it is. And combined him too into this magical song. Yeah. He did a great one with that one. But yeah, that's a good that's a great Sam Hunt
Starting point is 01:48:58 song. Yes. I mean that was like his first intro to all of us. Yeah. That was. That was. That was. That was. It's his big first hit. Who's an artist, though, that you always get excited to hear, you know, speaking of this Brett Eldred unreleased song and hopefully dropping in the next few months, what is an artist that you always get excited to hear that they're about to drop new music? And it can be any genre. We've stuck with country, but if you have other genre ideas. I feel like for me, it's always going to be country.
Starting point is 01:49:25 I feel like there's a few. Carrie Underwood for sure. Like, I just get, I get so excited whenever. You do. whenever Carrie has any semi amount of news, Hillary texted it to me. She's like, this is what's happening. I'm like, thank you. I saw that.
Starting point is 01:49:40 Thank you. I'm glad you're excited. When she released that Christmas album, I think it was in October, and I was listening to it all the time in my house. I decorated my Christmas tree the first week of November because of that album. Oh, and when she like teased her Las Vegas residency and nobody knew what it was, I like sent it to Hillary. I was like, this is so exciting. It was the first time I'd ever texted Hillary something about Carrie that she had not texted me first. And she was like, yeah, I think it's this.
Starting point is 01:50:03 And I'm like, wait, what? How did you already figure that out? I don't know. I just, I read things. You also have some sick FBI skills. So if the FBI is looking for anybody to investigate people, shout out to Hillary. I will say that's another fun fact about me. Like, I will find out anything.
Starting point is 01:50:20 You can. I can find out, I mean. Dark web, who? I mean, Hillary is our dark web. Seriously. Like, I, if you need to, me to investigate anyone, I got you. Like Morgan has to tell me if I'm like kind of interested in the guy she's Hillary. We cannot.
Starting point is 01:50:37 Oh, yes. This is a thing. This is a thing with Hillary. So Hillary will like think a guy is cute. And by the end of the day, basically have all the information on him. And I'm like, Hillary, you haven't even gone out with him. You need to give him a chance to talk about himself before you know everything about him. And it's like I know all this stuff.
Starting point is 01:50:55 I know his name and I've never even said hi to the person, which I know makes me sound super creepy. but I promise I'm not creepy and I'm just so, so shy. Yes. We're working on it though. We're working on it and I just need to know if they're worth my time or interest. Yes, but we're working on that line where it's just peaking the interest, not going overboard with the interest. I'm trying. I feel like I'm doing a little bit better.
Starting point is 01:51:20 You are. You have started to get better knowing that you do it now. And you didn't know you even did it until I was like, hey, by the way, you should like go out with them to find these things out. Yeah. And then, you know, that's how you meet people. Yeah. I just need to know. I'm like, I need to make sure they're not like a, you know, a serial killer or something before. You're not wrong, but it will always make me laugh. Yeah. It's funny. I mean, everybody has their quirks and it's not even a bad quirk. It's a funny. I think everybody has that friend, too, who they go to. Well, and honestly, like, if you even meet a guy that's secure in themselves, they're going to be like, oh, that's funny. You did that much research on me. It's also a known thing in the dating world, too. Like, you Facebook me. or you Googled me. Like, you figured me out before we went on this date.
Starting point is 01:52:02 That is just the reality with online dating and dating in today's world. Yeah, we're going to find things out. And I do now. I get my best friend, Courtney, because she's just like me. Like, just like me. I get her to research them so then I can honestly be like, no, I didn't research you. And I'll just tell her, let me know if there's any red flags. Let me know.
Starting point is 01:52:23 I don't need anything else. Just let me know if there's a red flag. Hillary? No. No. I need to know because I don't want to get invested in somebody. If there's like, they were, you know, I don't know, I can't think of anything, arrested for something that is really, really, really bad. Yes.
Starting point is 01:52:38 I mean, I just need to know these things. All you need to do before a date is if you meet them online and you have no nothing about them, Google search them. If nothing pops up besides like a Facebook account or something, you verify that it is the same person. So they're not catfishing. No arrest records. That's all you look at. at this way I send Courtney. I'm like, here, here's the name.
Starting point is 01:53:02 Here's the info. Give me the arrest records. Give me. Oh, she's found out like so much stuff about there was this one. God, this is so freaking creepy. But yeah, she was like, she knew his political party. She knew his arrest records. She knew like family stuff.
Starting point is 01:53:19 But she didn't tell me anything. She let me figure it out on my own. But she was going to let me know if there were any red flags. But she could, she found out just everything. She's just like me. we make a great team I know but a team that needs to not do that as much anymore I feel like everybody's going to be so creeped out by me now they're like
Starting point is 01:53:37 Hillary you're such a weirdo it's a security thing and it is a good thing but we're just teaching you to scale it back a little so you don't scare yourself from going on a first date which I tend to do yes yeah that is really the point of all of it dating scares me so that's why I need to make sure these people are yes and after you verify that They're legit.
Starting point is 01:53:59 That's where you stop. Okay. And then after the first day, you can do more research on them, but you have to give them the opportunity to present themselves. I will. I'm doing better. Because I have learned a few instances where I judge somebody online, and I was like, yeah, I don't think I'm going to be into this person.
Starting point is 01:54:12 I went anyway on the date. And I was like, oh, pleasantly surprised. Yeah, and they're different. I am always nervous about slipping up and, like, saying something that they went. I saw online that you went to Florida with your family. I'm from Florida. How was that? Like, you know, I can't, yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:30 And you cannot do that. No. I'm usually pretty careful. Like, I can play it cool when needed, so. I know you can. I'm just helping protect you. You are, and I feel like I'm doing a lot better. You are.
Starting point is 01:54:44 But I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who do the same. Oh, it's, yeah, it's like our natural instinct. And guys, why am I just saying women? I know both do it. And I was going to say, I'm about to get so many DMs from guys being like, this is so creepy or, you know. But to be fair, when I've brought that up on her, when I've been, like, very protective over myself, people will send me, like, their resume. They're like, here's my whole life story.
Starting point is 01:55:06 And I'm like, okay, well, that helps, but I'm not going out with you. Yeah, probably not going to go out with somebody who just shoots me a random DM, but. Yes. Okay. Well, that was fun. I don't remember what the question was. It's okay. We were talking about artists that you get excited who's dropping new music.
Starting point is 01:55:20 Oh, okay, yeah. I would say Carrie Underwood. Yeah. Who would yours be? I have one in country, which is Keith Urban. Love anything Keith Urban does. I just love him. And then Halsey.
Starting point is 01:55:32 I love her. I have become a pretty big Halsey fan now. She is multi-talented, has an insanely vocally talented voice. She's so good. I don't think that's a word, but she just is.
Starting point is 01:55:44 That just is what it is. You created it. And I saw her perform at our IHeart Festival one time and I was like, oh my goodness, you're magic. I feel like I kind of really got drawn to her when she did the collab with Kelsey and did the CMT Crossroads with her.
Starting point is 01:55:57 Oh my gosh. That was so good. That song I think isn't called color. Is that the name of it? Color. Maybe. I think it's color. I'm not going to say yes to anything anymore because most of the time I'm wrong. I've learned that. That's okay. I'm pretty sure it's the name of it and it is such an amazing song. I love it. I listen to it on repeat now. It is, it's great. I've become a very big Halsey fan now. See? And she's great. I mean, voice like voice is insanely different from a lot of things out there. And I think that's why I love. her so much. And her lyrics are really good too. Mm-hmm. She's a good writer. Okay. Well, that was fun. That was a really long tangent. No, it was a good one. I like those. You learned a lot about me.
Starting point is 01:56:39 All to get back to Brett Eldridge playing an unreleased song. Here is him performing. I want that back. Number two, the Friday morning conversation with Brett Eldridge. Brett, how are you, bud? I'm good. How are you doing? I'm doing good. A question for you. Yeah. You being a Cubs fan and just a baseball fan in general. The debate we have on this show is, is it okay to wear a jersey, first of all, as an adult man? I did wear an Arkansas Razorbacks baseball jersey to watch Arkansas play. And Caitlin was like, are you going to really wear a jersey? And I was like, yeah, because we're going to a game.
Starting point is 01:57:13 That's what you do at a game. Right. But first of all, can you wear a jersey to a game as an adult man? Absolutely. Okay. Now, can you wear a jersey as an adult man just hanging out, like going to, like Chipotle? I don't do that. You don't do that.
Starting point is 01:57:29 I mean, you can do whatever you want. I don't do that. If you saw an adult... And also, I told her, too, and you guys can jump in on this. I said it also matters what sport the jersey is. Like, you're not going to see me wearing a basketball jersey somewhere. Because there's just too much arms. There's too much action.
Starting point is 01:57:43 You can see in this... You're not going to see me wearing a football jersey because it's just too big. But a baseball jersey is almost like a shacket. It's almost like a shirt. I mean, especially if it's styled. Like, if it's like super jersey. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:57:56 Like, there's... I think there's vintage ones that I really like. I would wear certain ones, but I don't always do that, but I don't judge anybody for doing that. Here's my next question in fashion. Okay. High fashion. Here we go. So being now that I'm 40 years old, I still have hoodies that I bought before I turn four.
Starting point is 01:58:13 Is it okay to wear a hoodie at even your age? You're 35 now? Yep. Is it okay to wear a hoodie at 35, in your opinion? Absolutely. Okay. I wear lots of those. What about me, though, five, six years old?
Starting point is 01:58:24 Absolutely. Okay. As you're wearing one now. Yes, I am. What's he going to say to your case? Well, he can say no. He can say whatever he wants to say. A hoodie all day.
Starting point is 01:58:32 I don't buy new hoodies, but I grandfathered them in. I still wear them if I bought them. That's a good call. So I don't go to the store and be like, God, to get me a new hoodie. But I do own a bunch, and I still wear them. Because if you did buy a new and you'd wear the same old ones, because they're more comfortable or whatever, or they have a thing? No.
Starting point is 01:58:51 I just feel like I don't need to be buying new hoodies. Okay. I can still wear the ones I had. I don't need to be buying billionaire, billionaire boy club hoodies. I knew one would do. I get it. How have you been? It's sensible.
Starting point is 01:59:02 I'm good. Really good. Every time I see you on social media, you're like deep in the woods and I just see your boot. I wonder on those hikes that you take, because it's always a stream or a tree or an eagle flying over. Do you ever get inspired to write music, though, as you're doing these walks? 100%. I mean, I hike almost every day. It just kind of gets me out of my head and kind of.
Starting point is 01:59:26 to real stuff, I guess, and it opens my mind up a little bit. So I'll get melody or something and I'll record it on my phone and get ideas and just kind of contemplate and just walk around. Look at Bert. Look at Eagles up in the sky. Can you name a song that you have written that was inspired by you walking in the woods? I would say a lot of my new ones are, but I wouldn't say like, there's one that's like, I want hiking today. Oh, that'd be a good one. I like hiking today. That's a hit. If I heard hiking today, I'll be like, dang, that'd be awesome. That'd be a very specific market. All the hikers out there would love it.
Starting point is 02:00:00 You can have birds chirping in the background of the song. Insert real birds. Yeah. The ones as you were hiking. I kind of like that. That's the challenge we're giving you for the next three years. Okay. You have to somehow put the word, you have to put some sort of hiking reference.
Starting point is 02:00:13 Have you ever put a hiking reference in a song? No, but I should. I mean, I think it's very specific. Yeah. But I mean, people love to hike. Who doesn't love to hike? Yes. And it can be subtle.
Starting point is 02:00:24 It's like, ooh, baby, look in your eyes reminds me of when I was hiking in my... Put on, yeah, it's like, put on your hiking boots. There you go, that's good. Yeah. That's all we got right now. That's all we got. That's all we need, though. That's how you get to the hits.
Starting point is 02:00:39 That's what we do. You're talking, you just mentioned something about new music. So are you recording music right now? Yes. What's that plan? Hopefully get some stuff, you know, the process can take forever sometimes. But I've written probably eight of the songs. for my new album already.
Starting point is 02:00:56 And now I'm starting to record him. So it's been vocaling them and recording them. And so I'm deep in it. And how locked up do these songs live? Because, you know, like Taylor Swift will only play them out. Do you ever do show up with the box and flip it open? It'll be like you can only listen to you. I'll hear it like this.
Starting point is 02:01:11 You know, I'm a believer that, in fact, if we get time, I'll play something no one's ever heard today. But like I like to just get it out there because I like to see how people react to things. And there's avenues to get music out there now. It's like, I want to, I'm always writing songs, so I want to hear what people think and how they feel from it. What if you played a new song and we reacted in a negative way?
Starting point is 02:01:33 Like we were the audience, and we're like, oh, I don't know, Brett. You all are wrong. We don't hide it well sometimes. I mean, there's subtle clues. Like, you could, if we're like, don't give all the subtle clues, though. Yeah, yeah. Sometimes artists come in. I'm already like nervous right now.
Starting point is 02:01:47 Let's go on. If I, sometimes, it's tough. There are things because at times I will not hear an artist. until they play on that stage that you're on. And once they play, you realize, oh, they do not sound at the same level as their recording sounds. And then it's awkward,
Starting point is 02:02:05 because I don't even want to look at them until it's over. Yeah. We're like, I won't let you down. That's tough. Well, why don't you give us a little something new? Do you have the songs memorized already?
Starting point is 02:02:14 No, but I have a lyric right here. Okay, what's this one called? This one's called I want that back. I want that back. And did you write this? I did. And what was the inspiration of this new song? This inspiration actually came at 4 a.m. in the middle of night.
Starting point is 02:02:26 It was kind of in the heat of pandemic times and kind of looking through all the things I don't need my life and could go without. And the things that you want to hold, you know, pull closer. And, you know, as the simple things that mean a lot that I want to hold on to and the things you want to throw out. And so it's called I want that back. And what room of a house or a bedroom did you write this in? I just want to get the full picture. Did you wake up and write it? or where you are you went up before i this thing where four a ms we're almost and i would i would i've got
Starting point is 02:02:58 this little like old school recorder because i don't put my phone by my bed because then i'll look at it and it'll wake me up and then i'll think about it or something so i got this little recorder and what i do is all i'll uh all if i have something that pop up i'll just record it right there and i had the whole lyrics of this chorus just kind of show up in the middle of night i don't know it doesn't always have like that but it just did. And I had one buddy that I knew was a perfect person to help me finish this because I already wrote the chorus, helped me kind of shape the verses a little bit and everything.
Starting point is 02:03:28 And I called him up. His name is Scooter Crusoe. And we wrote Mean to Me and Want to Be That Song. He's kind of been one of my guys that I've always written with. And I think we got a really special one. But nobody's ever heard it. Here it is. We will be the judge of that, Brett.
Starting point is 02:03:42 Let's see how special it is. All right, here we go. Okay, so this is called, I'm trying to get the strike. It's called. I want that back. I want that back. Written at 4 a.m. for the most part. What were you wearing in bed?
Starting point is 02:03:52 Bob Miley T-shirt and... You sleep in a T-shirt? Yes. I ain't weirdo. This is what we jump on them for? I don't sleep in a shirt. Sometimes when I'm not feeling good about... I mean, I do both, but that night it was probably a Bob Miley T-shirt.
Starting point is 02:04:05 Okay, we'll accept it. All right, here we go. Bob Miley T-shirt singing this song. All right, here's I want that back. Here we go. You can have the small talk. You can have the hate. You can have the check.
Starting point is 02:04:18 your phone each time you get a little break and you can have the lonely you can have the bank you can have the tv full of stations to tell you how to thank but the smell of old wood bleachers and the word of hometown preachers being rich was her and a cheap six-pack yeah the shine of a new summer barefoot baseball with my brother first time freedom with the windows crack I want that back oh that's really good man that's really good I wouldn't open my eyes to see if you all were giving me the luck oh we're looking give it a grammy that's what I say oh good dang dude that's a good one anybody else get emotional uh yeah goosebumps uh yeah me too I felt that yeah and my forearms usually it's in my thighs
Starting point is 02:05:16 some reason hit you different as I start to think about where they hit me it kind of had my forearm That's awesome. I mean, look at you. Look at you. I mean, God gifted you the voice of an angel. Thank you. Do you ever just look up and go, yo, dude, appreciate that.
Starting point is 02:05:30 I do sometimes. That's weird. I don't understand how I got it, but I got it. I'm glad to have it, and I feel very fortunate. So I try to belt it out right here. Why did I not get it? You know? I know.
Starting point is 02:05:41 You got other things, man. I think that about a lot of people that come in here. No, it's easy to get envious of that. It's a brand new song from Brett Eldridge. will people, just your best guess here, when do you think people will be able to hear the version of that from a studio? A month, two months? I would hope
Starting point is 02:05:59 in the next few months. Really? Man, it's a good one. The Friday morning conversation with Brett Eldridge. Going out on the Good Day, the American tour dates, that means there are European dates too, so you're going to go basically most of May. When you go somewhere like the
Starting point is 02:06:15 UK, like how are you received there? Is it, here's an American who sings country music, let's go explore him or are they like, oh my gosh, Brett Elder just coming? It is such a, for me, it's like the excitement of like when you get your first hit or a song it's even starting to get played and people get so excited because, you know, they get to discover it first or something. And when you go, you know, thousands of miles, you know, away from home and play music,
Starting point is 02:06:41 I just feel like there's so much appreciation. So I continue to want to go back, you know, every year that I can. And so it is really, it's really cool. Is it weird to go places and they say? sing your songs back when they don't even speak your language? Yes, very strange. Because I think that will be... Which is... Yes, absolutely.
Starting point is 02:06:57 Cool, but great. I played in Berlin, and I remember playing up there, and I remember, like, being in meet and greets and stuff, and a lot of people didn't speak English. But then I'd look out in the crowd and be like, all these people are speaking English perfectly fine right now and they're singing it, so it's pretty cool. I think it's a special thing to be able to have that.
Starting point is 02:07:15 If your record label came to you today, and they said, hey, Brett, we heard you play the new song that you just played on the Bybone show. really feel great about this album. We've heard some tracks, but we really need you to post a shirtless pick to promote the record and the tour. They came to you and pulled you aside. So we need you to go shirtless. What? What is this question? I'm asking if they came. That would be uncomfortable, but they were like, hey, we really need to go full sex appealed. Would you post a shirtless picture like on the front of your record? Would you do that? Would you be shirtless? No, hell no.
Starting point is 02:07:43 No chance. I could never live with that. I could never live with that. Why? I don't know. I just, you know, I'm always working out. I'm trying to get better, but it's, I don't, I don't want to see that. Nobody else wants to see that. What is the Brett Eldridge workout routine? I will, I left about four days a week, and I like, like, I'm trying to, I'm trying to put on some weight. So I'm just lifting weights and, and cycling for cardio. Yeah, but trying to put on weight. You have trouble putting on weight? Well, last year during the quarantine, I ran the whole time, and I didn't go to gyms. and so I just lost a ton of weight
Starting point is 02:08:21 running like crazy which was good for my mind but then I was like God I'm kind of skinny so I've been trying to eat a lot more and I mean I'm always eating healthy but eat more and and I've lift weights and make sure I get a lot of cardio in for my heart most of I just want to feel good so Are you worried about going back on stage
Starting point is 02:08:40 and not having your air like if you're singing all these songs you go back out for the first time? That's a big part I mean You can do like Beyonce did I've been swimming a lot and and I also do these I do the cold showers in the morning and I do that. Did anybody else, anybody else gas?
Starting point is 02:08:53 Have you all done that? Terrible. No, I like that. Do you do that as cold as it goes? Yeah, as cold as I can possibly get it. Sometimes, like, surely, at least three minutes. So you do the three minutes. That's what I did this morning.
Starting point is 02:09:04 Three minutes, ten seconds. If there was like a mystery murder in town, I would go, well, let's go look at Brett and Amy because they're psychopaths in other ways. That's why. Have you heard of Wim Hof? Have you heard of that guy? No. So he's this Dutch guy that teaches like this breathing and this technique to
Starting point is 02:09:19 you can go in and withstand crazy cold temperatures by doing his technique. You got to watch it. Just look it up. I don't think I will. I just have no interest whatsoever. You know me. I'm always very open about like anxieties and stuff. Like the cold shower really helps pop me out of like a weird state.
Starting point is 02:09:38 Have you done cryotherapy that box you're going into this freezing? Okay. And it's funny that he said therapy. Like I started going like maybe six or seven months ago. and it was my three minutes of some people go in there and they want to listen to music and dance out and I go in and I'm like, no music, just put me in the box and I come out like a better, in a better mental state.
Starting point is 02:09:58 I did mine for injuries. I never felt like I'm going to be a better person. Oh, well, I mean, I went and I was coming out like mentally better. So in a way, that is a different injury. You know what I mean? It's not like a muscle recovery, but it's like an emotional maybe anxiety or type recovery. Okay, well, listen, weird.
Starting point is 02:10:17 We're those. Next we're going to do some breathing. Yeah. Everyone. When you go, have you started working on your set list at all for when you finally go out? I literally, yesterday my band leader called me is like, right, let's get the set list going, which makes me so nervous to do that. Because I was used, you know, you have to pick through a lot of songs.
Starting point is 02:10:32 What's the first song back? Like the first, the opening song? It's the first, you're walking out on stage first time in a year and a half. I mean, I think it's got to be. I mean, it's a good day, too. It's going to be good day. I don't know why, but it feels like. So you start with that.
Starting point is 02:10:45 I think so. This thing is a set some, like, a positive. What are you close with? I don't know. We need to figure this out. No, we got a mouse in your pocket. I figured that. I figured in the wrong song.
Starting point is 02:10:56 I mean, I don't know. Okay, let me think what I would, if I were going to your show, I don't think you're going to like my answer. That's it. Because when you look back, I'm sure you're tired of playing this, not tired, but I'm sure if you got to pick, you would play the new stuff because it's more exciting as an artist, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 02:11:10 Because you were living a different life whenever you put don't you out. Yeah, absolutely. But however, I think you close on don't you. That's not a bad sound to close on. Just because it's big, it's upbeat. Yeah. And I can see you, baby, you're getting close. I mean, right, don't we feel like that's...
Starting point is 02:11:24 I used to close with the music. That was a good one to close with. But maybe, that's not a bad thought. I run when I wrote the flagpole. For me, do you ever not play a hit? Oh. I did that one time. It didn't go well.
Starting point is 02:11:40 As the closer, you mean? No, just at all on the set list. Oh, at all? What did you not play? I think one time we just screwed up for some. something and we forgot to add like and I played mean to me every time but it was like mean to me or something you know and and it's one of my favorite songs at play and somehow it slipped to our you know just writing the set list because I like to I like to switch it up and I think I forgot it
Starting point is 02:12:01 it that night and we're like man something didn't feel right like there's a moment in the show that we didn't have and it was that was our wedding song oh man can you imagine you go to hear one song and you don't play it so if you come to the good day tour I will remember every song I promise And if not, I'm sorry. Will you play the long way? Yeah. Because that is, not here. I mean, if you play it, now that's great.
Starting point is 02:12:22 But I'm saying, will you play that on a tour? Because that's my favorite song. Yes. You will. You're committed. I like to break that one down. Sometimes it's played acoustic. Well, lucky for us.
Starting point is 02:12:29 That's what he's doing here. Yes. Will you play us some of the long way? Yeah, okay. All right. Okay, I'll bring you right into it. Just take a trip around your town. Right here we go.
Starting point is 02:12:38 Don't think I've ever seen your kind of pretty. Wandering around this midnight. my house city you got a look that says you got it all together so if you don't mind I'd like to know you better take me the long
Starting point is 02:13:01 way around your town were you the queen with the silver crown I want the secrets you keep the shine underneath of the Diamond I think I just found Take me the long way you're right
Starting point is 02:13:24 I wondered if you'd chase that big note this early in the morning And he did it, he did it I was scared, but I did it He did it, he chased it. You just gotta show up and do it. That's life right there. Brett Eldridge is here. Listen, tickets for the Good Day tour go on sale today
Starting point is 02:13:48 at 10 a.m. local time, wherever you are, go to brettelredge.com and get tickets. It will be a fantastic show, not just with Brett, but he got a pretty powerful opening act too. Usually, for an opening act, you get somebody that people never heard of. You give them a couple bucks and go, hey, go do good job. You got Morgan Evans. That's awesome.
Starting point is 02:14:03 Hell yeah. I cannot wait. All right, go to breadeldridge.com. Good to see you. Good to see y'all. Much success, as always. The new song is fantastic. Thank you.
Starting point is 02:14:11 We love it. I just looked. It's number one on the chart already. Oh, good. Yeah, and it only has been here on the show. Yeah, that's been great. Done. All right, there is.
Starting point is 02:14:17 Brett Eldridge. We'll see it soon. It's the best bits of the week with Morgan number two. One, everybody was. geeky now when they came on the show. This is Three Doors Down. They performed so many of their big hits. Cryptonite, Loser, When I'm Gone, Be Like That.
Starting point is 02:14:36 And it was all like acoustic versions and it still sounded so good. This one seriously got you guys so excited online. So, of course, I had to have it at number one. So here is Three Doors Down. Number one. The Friday morning conversation with Three Doors Down. I'm a big fan of these guys. You guys good?
Starting point is 02:14:56 Yes, sir. Good. because I'm good. You have so many number one songs, and we're going to get to some music in a second. But, Brad, when's the last time you guys actually played for people in a room? It has been quite a while since we played for some people in a room like this. And it's always been a little bit different to do it.
Starting point is 02:15:13 But it's actually really cool to be sitting here doing it because it's fresh and it's been so long since we've done it. I'm kind of looking forward to it. But I was honestly nervous this morning when I got up to come in. Why would you get you and I know each other at this point too? So it's not like we're meeting for the first time. But why would you be, is it because you haven't sang in a while? It's because we haven't sang in a year and it's probably the biggest radio show in the country.
Starting point is 02:15:35 No pressure. But listen, I'm just such a big fan. And so, you know, you guys all coming in together, this means the world. So thank you guys for waking up early and singing. Because I know it's a famous rock band, you don't want to wake up early in the morning. You know, it's early in the morning. So I appreciate that. So where do we start?
Starting point is 02:15:52 You guys, the record's been out now, what, 20 years? 20 years. And I did see that you guys were going to play, you know, the better life all the way through from track one to track. How many tracks are on that record? I think 11, I believe. So, but track one is kryptonite. And do you start off with the big song? I think we're going to. Dang, the crowd's going to be like, all right, we're ready to get warmed up. Whoa, that's the big one. It's going to be, you know, it's a little bit different. But we done it, every year we, you know, we have a Better Life Foundation. And every year we play a show for that. And we actually tried this out of doing the record. And we're done away from the sun. Right?
Starting point is 02:16:27 And so we just started that record, which, you know, it has Here Without You, which is another one of her big songs. And it's like, at best set, put that song on like the fourth song, fifth song in the set. But it was just so cool. And it was kind of inspired by, several years ago we went out on tour with Aerosmith. And it wasn't like an anniversary for the record or anything. But they came out and they played their hits and all, but they played the entire record of Toys in the Attic.
Starting point is 02:16:50 And it was so awesome. And it was just, it's just, we done it to The Better Life that year. And it was just so fun to do that it'll be fun to do. year I think. Let me hear a clip, Ramundo, I'm here without you. How big was this song for you guys here without you? Because I heard it, I heard it and played it on the radio. It felt like every five minutes.
Starting point is 02:17:11 It was a monster. That was a big song. And it was a really important song for us too because, you know, after the success of the Better Life record, which was, I mean, by the grace of God, it had four hits on it, which was really a blessing too. Because, you know, if we would have only had kryptonite, that would have been it, you know, obviously. But it's really hard to kind of follow up a song like that. to follow up a record.
Starting point is 02:17:33 And so here without you, and when I'm going off the second record, really were important for kind of launching us and kind of, for lack of a better way of putting it just cruise control in a way, you know? Whenever, it's been, I think, two or three years ago, we do a big charity show, Eddie and I do the Raging Idiots Million Dollar show. And I was like, dang, you know it would be awesome. Brow would come out and sing Kryptonite. We play it.
Starting point is 02:17:53 And then I was nervous when you showed out because I was like, because we're doing like the background vocals, and we're playing the guitar. And we come out, and it was, we played at the rhyme. and it was really one of the highlights of what we've been able to do. So that's where we met the first time, I think. It is, it is, man.
Starting point is 02:18:07 I had fun that night, too. I was nervous, too. And then he wrote a check, and then he's like, and then I want to give you $10,000. And I spent, I bought a new jacket. It's awesome. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 02:18:17 Would you guys mind, because we're going to talk and play music both? Do you feel like you're warm enough? Can you guys vocals warm? You good? I think so. Everybody good?
Starting point is 02:18:23 Can we hear a little verse and chorus of Croponite? Like, we go to the show, it's the first song, the crap. We're all there. down in Kryptonite. Well, I took a walk around the world to ease my trouble mind.
Starting point is 02:18:49 I left my body lying somewhere in the sand to time. And I watched the world go to the dark side of the moon. But I feel there's nothing I can do. The dark side of the moon. After all, I knew it had to be something to do with you. I really don't mind what happens now. Man, that's great. That's awesome, man.
Starting point is 02:20:00 How does that feel to sing again with people watching and clapping? Feels good. Yeah, feels good for us too. We like to clap. Sitting here trying not to sweat. That song, if I'm familiar here, like that song kind of became a hit locally first
Starting point is 02:20:12 and kind of spread that way? It did. It did, man. Our local radio station down in Biloxi, Mississippi, played the song for us. And after just, after playing locally, like you said, and begging them to play the song
Starting point is 02:20:25 and going on the radio station and playing on the local show that they had once a month there. And it just really kind of happened to us like a story. You know, and we were naive when it was all happening. We didn't realize that that's not how it really happened, you know. So it really kind of happened to us like it happens on TV. You know, and by the grace of God, it all came together, man. And it just makes a really good story more so than how it actually comes together sometimes. And we're just really thankful to have all been apart.
Starting point is 02:20:55 part of it. The tour was announced you guys can get tickets at three doors down.com. I mean, you're everywhere. I was going to read some cities, but you have like 150 million cities here. Everywhere. You're going back on the road. Is that exciting to go do full band shows? I cannot wait, man. I cannot wait. In a long time. Brad, how did the band stay together? How's this still happening, you know? Man, we just, our fans, our fans have been so good to us, and they have encouraged us a long way. God's been good to us. He's kept us going. And, you know, We've been through a lot over the years, but you just, I mean, you know, it really is. It's the fans, man.
Starting point is 02:21:33 You hear how much your music means to people and a little encouraging notes on whether it's Instagram or Facebook or somebody you walk by in the store every day, man. I don't think people realize how much it means to you and how much those little pads on the back just keep you moving forward. Do people come up to you now and be like, hey, you're the guy from, I don't, I'm not sure if it's Creed or Three Doors Down or Lit? They ever do that? They can't even. You, man. I get three days grace all the time.
Starting point is 02:21:55 Oh, yeah, okay. Yeah, three days of grace. They're a little harder. Yeah. But, yeah, dang. Sometimes you get third-up blind. You get third-up blind. I can see that.
Starting point is 02:22:05 So, Cryptonite comes out. It's a massive hit. It's played at rock radio. It's played a pop radio. It's everywhere. At what point do you start to feel like, wow. Like we're being played everywhere, and I can actually feel it as you're living your normal life.
Starting point is 02:22:24 When I think that we've seen how. I think I've seen how far it was our first trip to Europe. And our first real show in Europe was a little club in Finland. And we've not even been to Finland that many times, but it was our first show over there. And Matt and I were walking up to the door of this club and a 400-500-seat venue. And it was at 3 o'clock in the daytime. And it was snowy and kind of, I forgot it was like snowy or drizzling rain or something. Anyway, it was pretty inhospitable weather.
Starting point is 02:22:49 And there was 3 or 4 little girls standing in front of the club wanting our autograph. And we just walked down there in the middle of the day to kind of check the place out. and just like we were in Finland. And they didn't really hardly speak English. And I was like, they were waiting on us in Finland in this show. You know, it was just three or four, like three or four hundred. But it just showed you just how far that, like, your music has reached all the way over here to a place that you never even thought you'd come.
Starting point is 02:23:11 Did they ever try to, like, flash you guys up and put you in fancy jackets? And, like, guys, we need more of a, like a, like a, we need a flashy, sparkling. For a second. For a second, they did, and they just realized it. just is not, that shirt and that voice just don't look right together. They just, it just... They just... Mississippi boys.
Starting point is 02:23:30 Yeah, they send us to, like, media class to teach us to how to even kind of do an interview, and I don't think I paid attention in that class any more than I did any other class. But, uh, it, I mean, it helped. And, I mean, they tried to make us, or tried to help us not talk quite so, so, I mean, like this, you know? Like, same thing. When I got into doing, like, radio and television, they were like, hey, you're from Arkansas.
Starting point is 02:23:54 your accent's too thick. And so I went to a speech pathologist and tried to learn. And at this point, I've kind of reembraced what I stopped doing for a while. But it was the same thing. They were like, you can't go work in a lot of places if you sound like a hillbilly. I know. I know, man. It really was like that.
Starting point is 02:24:09 And it was, I don't know. What would they tell you in these classes? Like they would go, all right, Brad, Mr. Doors Down. Come on in. Because for me, it was G's. Because instead of going, you know, fishing, I would be like, we're going to fish. and they would go, well, first of all, you have to add G's all your words because you're eliminating somehow.
Starting point is 02:24:28 And eyes for me, because I is how I've been now trained to say it, but as eyes, you know, it was like, I got hit in the eye, you know, instead of I got hit in the eye. And they were like, well, if you say, ah, people aren't going to like you because you're going to sound like you're from Arkansas. Yep. And so I imagine they probably do that same stuff to you. They did. And you know, but you know what was so cool about it was as you get out and, and you meet people
Starting point is 02:24:52 in like the real world. out on tour, is everybody like just, a Southern accent is like disarming to people or something. It's like they don't take you, it ain't that they look at you like you're stupid or anything. It's like, they look at you kind of like,
Starting point is 02:25:06 oh, he got to be, he got to be decent. And so, you know, it's kind of like, it is a little bit disarming to people, so I kind of embraced it also.
Starting point is 02:25:16 And I'm like, well, I mean, people like it, you know. Three Doors Down. They're in studio now. They're going back out on tour. You guys can get tickets at three doorsdown.
Starting point is 02:25:23 It says 717. Let me give a thumbs. January 4th, March, April, May, June. July 17th is the first show back. And you guys will be in Huber Heights, Ohio, Corby, Kentucky, New Orleans, Orange Beach, Alabama, Pelham, Alabama. So a lot of our listeners now are going to get to see you guys, you know, on tour.
Starting point is 02:25:40 Whenever you had Kryptonite and it hits, do you have that feeling like, oh, man, we have to have a second song so we don't end up like Chumbawamba, like a one-hit wonder? Was that a fear in the group? Absolutely. Absolutely. And, I mean, it was, we, We were so thankful that Loser done good,
Starting point is 02:25:55 and not only that it done good, but that it done good at Rock Radio, because at the time, you know, you want to be a rock band, but, you know, Kryptonite was such a big hit at not just Rock, but at Top 40. And if you went over to the Top 40 too much, then Rock wouldn't play anymore. So we needed to definitely keep our roots in Rock.
Starting point is 02:26:11 And Loser became a hit at Rock, and it was number one at Rock Radio for months. It was like four or five months or something. It was for a long time. Man, I love Loser. That was the opening of Loser, It's just, it's strong. Thank you.
Starting point is 02:26:25 That was a bit. Would you guys, do you guys play that acoustically? Do you guys do Loser? Okay, three doors down here. This was the number one at Rock for a long time. Here is Loser. Nothing seems to fill this place. I need this every time.
Starting point is 02:26:56 So take your lives, get off my case. Someday I won't find. I love that flows to me like this, and this won't fall away. And this will fall away. all the way, yeah, you're getting closer to pushing me off of a lot of little edge, because I'm a loser. And soon or later, you know I'll be dead.
Starting point is 02:27:26 You're getting closer. Open and taking the fall, because I'm a loser. Come on, man, that's awesome. I love it. Okay, three doors down to you. We'll come back in a second. I'm going to ask for when I'm gone. So just know, have you look at Tars Tunes.
Starting point is 02:27:52 Get you ready, because I'm going to ask for that in a second. We're going to come back with Three Doors Down. I'll say it again. Go to Three Doors Down.com, the Better Live 20th anniversary. They have so many dates on this tour. As you can hear, they still have it. Brad still has it. Sometimes artists come in and like, I'm going to go back and play the record.
Starting point is 02:28:10 I'm like, well, sing for me. They're like, oh, no. You got it. You guys got it. That's awesome. Hey, Brad, you know, we did this thing where I think we celebrated the record, and, you know, us three, we went and we talked for a while and talked about the history of Three Doors Down. And then all of a sudden, a copy of The Better Life on vinyl showed up in my house. You sneak in my house and leave it there because I have no idea how it got it in my house.
Starting point is 02:28:31 Blame it on my house. Okay, somehow that record, it had a whole long note on it, and I was like, I didn't let anyone in the door and it's somehow in the house. But I got to imagine it's crazy, you're still in the grocery store and you hear one of your songs. Like, that's got to be a weird thing, right? It really is. Like you're shopping for fish sticks, and all of a sudden you hear, I'm here without you, baby! It was like two weeks ago.
Starting point is 02:28:53 Really? And I can hear it just like a little note of it. I'll know it's that, and I tell you in my wife, stop. She'd go like, she just rolls her eyes and walks off. What kind of singing training did you have as a kid when you started the band? I didn't. I was the youngest of seven kids, and I grew up in Assembly of God Church. And, you know, in Assembly of God, they sing a lot.
Starting point is 02:29:13 and I never sang up in front of the church, but I just grew up. It was never out of place in my house to be loud, you know, because I mean, my family is a pretty loud bunch, and none of them would argue that. And so it was never, I was never bashful or anything. So I just kind of grew up singing and loved 80s hair metal and all the 80s bands. And then I love like 90s country. And me and my friends, we would ride around the neighborhood. And I had a little Mazda Sundan truck that my daddy gave me when I was like 13.
Starting point is 02:29:42 I just couldn't leave the neighborhood. So we drive that truck around and we would just sing and sing and sing and I guess that's where I learned how to sing. Would anyone tell you, hey, Brad, you're pretty good. Like you should try to sing. How did you start to get the affirmation to know, yeah, I should try to do this? Well, we didn't have a singer in the van. It was just three of us just jamming.
Starting point is 02:30:00 And, I mean, we didn't even have a, there was nobody really even thought about two singing. I was like, well, I try it. And I didn't, I mean, I was not confident at all. And I, and I, I, uh, and I, uh, our, our, uh, our, uh, our, uh, our, uh, our, uh, uh, our, uh, our, our bass player, his girlfriend and one of her friends would be sitting there sometimes listen to us and I think, well, Pat, do you sound good? And I think them telling me that gave me more encouragement to finally like stop looking at the wall while I was singing and kind of turn around and be like, all I can do it. And all my friends were, you know, I've never
Starting point is 02:30:29 had any friends that like picked on me about it. All my friends and even like a little southern small hometown, they were all really encouraging about it. And that helped me more than anything. How'd you have those friends? That's the opposite. It just beat me up, told me I was a loser the whole time. That's why I like a loser when you, I'm a loser. Three doors down, they're here. Tell me about the name. How did three doors down the name come about?
Starting point is 02:30:52 It really didn't mean any thing significant. It was just we were kind of searching for our name, and we had a gig coming up like that night or either the night after this little trip we took down to Gulf Shores and being from South Mississippi, we just, the little town you go through going down there is just full little fruit stands and some in the same buildings. and one of the fruit stands had moved a couple of parcels down in the same building. They had put up some tack-on letters.
Starting point is 02:31:17 It said, your business moves so many doors down, and some of them had even kind of fallen off. And at the time, there was three of us, and we just kind of mailed it together and used it the next night at the party and just figured, well, it's cemented now. He can't change it. Did anyone ever have conspiracy theories about what the crazy theories, like three doors down is actually the sign of the beast? I've heard some doozies. Really? I would imagine because it's so, like, I never knew. what it meant and you're like well I bet it means something like deep or something like they're up to
Starting point is 02:31:46 something I'm sure you heard people all kinds of weird theories about the name huh absolutely and I mean I can't really name them like one off top of my head but people have asked me it's like well it has to be like it means like such and such or somebody somebody lived three doors down and you murdered them yeah I heard so I heard three doors down are here right now they have their guitars they were so gracious to come in and play some songs okay so I've got two requests will you do when I'm gone this is my first request here absolutely Tell me about this song, like when you think about back in the day
Starting point is 02:32:14 when it's written and you started recording it, like what comes to mind? When I'm gone is actually the only song that we've ever written on tour. We've never, we've always, before, incense, always had the big dream getting out on tour, and man, we're just going to really hustle this time. We're going to play shows at nighttime.
Starting point is 02:32:30 We're going to get on the bus and right during the day, and it absolutely never happens. And we wrote when I'm going on stage one day at Soundcheck. And they had, I've been playing the music around for a little bit, And I guess we don't always write lyrics and melody or music at the same time. And sometimes they're written as completely different ideas that wind up together. And that's kind of how that idea was. And we were on stage at Soundcheck one day and put it together.
Starting point is 02:32:58 And I remember somebody standing there thinking, like saying that, man, that's a good song. And it also, once we got it, it gave us some confidence. It was really cool to have that song. play it a little bit on the Better Life tour, even though it was on the way from the Sun record, because we knew we had one in our pocket that was a good song going into that recording process. And I think it took a lot of the anxiety out of that recording process, which allowed us to kind of open up and write the songs that we did for that second record. All right, here we go. Here is Three Doors Down with When I'm Gone.
Starting point is 02:33:30 Oh, inside of me that you may never see. And there are secrets in this life that I can't hide. And somewhere in this darkness there's a light that I can find. Well, maybe it's too far away. Maybe I'm just blind. Maybe I'm just blind. Hold me when I'm here, ride me when I'm wrong. Hold me when I'm scared and love me when I'm gone.
Starting point is 02:34:26 Everything I am and everything in me wants to be the way. if I could, give up everything, if only for your good. So hope it went on. Three doors down. So good. Chris, you know, whenever we talk about these songs, I mean, you wrote a lot of these songs, too, almost all of them. I mean, here you are, the quiet guy playing the guitar, knowing I'm making mailbox money,
Starting point is 02:35:14 you know, writing these songs with Brad. I mean, it's got to feel pretty good for these things that last so long, right? It really does. I was talking to my wife the other day, but I was like, you know, with COVID and everything, sitting home for two years. Like, we're living off what we did 20 years ago. It's just really a blessing. It really is.
Starting point is 02:35:27 The checks still actually come in the mail, or now they're just going right to the... No, not... Email. Are you guys still making money, though? Are they, like, streams? Are you still getting a little bit here and there? No, too, man. Especially off, like, songs like, here without you and stuff.
Starting point is 02:35:43 And, I mean, you know, that song, a couple of years ago. And, you know, like, that song came out in 2003 or whatever, 2004 or five or something, one of it? 2003. But, like, in 2009 or whatever, Universal took all their music off YouTube and put it all back. So Cryptonite and Here Without You essentially got put back on the same day. And from that date, like 11 years ago for a 17-year-old song, that song has got like 640 million views on YouTube. And it still gets like a million views a week.
Starting point is 02:36:16 Is it? Do people keep putting it in movies and stuff too? And when I say the grocery store, like, that's where you want to be. It's kind of everywhere at that point. I got to assume like, and it's weird because you start it off as a rock band. And now like I'll flip on the hot AC station and it's like, another light one from three doors down. And you're like, dang, how stuff is transition. But that's where, that's how you're getting paid still.
Starting point is 02:36:34 Absolutely. Like a rom-com will put three doors down in. I'm here without you, baby. And you're like, all right, well, I never expected that love scene for the stuff. But that's got to be cool too, right? It really is, man. It really is. You know, and whereas last year, you know, we weren't able to go out and play shows.
Starting point is 02:36:48 people were at home streaming some music, you know, and that really, you know, as the transition of the music industry has happened and where there's really not record sales anymore, artists are, you know, that's where the artists get paid is off streaming music in different ways. And I don't know if kids and people realize what a blessing they were to artists last year
Starting point is 02:37:10 being at home streaming all that music. I want to ask, before we play one more song here, because let me say this again, 20 year anniversary of The Better Life, playing the whole thing. I'm not wrong here. You're playing it from top to bottom. Top to bottom. And I want to get into Be Like That, which I believe you two wrote together. Just you two, you're in a room, you write this song. This is, you know, one of the middle tracks here. When you write Be Like That, because am I wrong? Was it on the American Pie soundtrack, too?
Starting point is 02:37:35 It was. American Pie too. Yeah. I remember that thing coming and the song is also over there. And I'm like, this is it crazy. And it was in the movie. And so that song became, again, such a hit. Do you ever go, Can you believe us two just sat there and wrote that song? Man, I think that... Like two minutes. It was that quick. It was one of those quick ones. I think that all the time.
Starting point is 02:37:54 I have felt guilty before about like, man, it's like, I know people try, like, so... I mean, we're not overly talented dude. Just playing all that way of a dude. And, but, I mean, when I say, like, God blessed us with some songs, he really, like, has, because, like, I was sitting wonder why. Like, so why didn't somebody else write some of those songs, you know? because they just, it weren't that they were like great, they just, man, they connected with people.
Starting point is 02:38:20 And I guess to just do it in the simplicity of it. But, you know, and I've stood on stage and sing Be Like that, I mean, and I'm thinking that I'm singing what this song, I'm living what this song is about. I'm like, I'm actually getting to live a song that I wrote about, you know? Here is, Be Like That from Three Doors Down. He spends his nights in California. watching the stars on the big screen and then he lies awake and he wonders
Starting point is 02:39:14 so why can't that be me because in his life he's filled with all these good intentions he's left a lot of things he'd rather not mention right now and just before he says good night he looks up with a little smile at me and he's left a lot of things he'd rather not mention right now and just before he says good night and he looks up with a little smile at me And he says, if I could be like that, I would give anything, and just to live one day in those shoes. If I could be like that, what would I do? What would I... Three doors down, they're here, the kilnit.
Starting point is 02:40:06 That's awesome, guys. This has been so much fun for me. Brett, I saw a picture of you with Scott Statt from Creed. Yeah. Was it here in town? It was. I didn't know. He lived here.
Starting point is 02:40:16 He does, man. He lives out in Franklin. I've tried to get him on the show. He won't even respond. He won't come on the show. Come on. Is he not like me? Man, you know what?
Starting point is 02:40:25 That's the first time I've talked to Scott in a long time. Is that right? Creed was the first band to ever take us out on tour. And we per se have, like, you know, a couple times over the years, like people like Air Smith and Zizi Tau, we've gone and played several shows with. But we've never opened for a band. And Creed was the only band that we've ever opened for. They were the first band to take us out on tour.
Starting point is 02:40:45 And, you know, it was back in, like, in the day. And me and Scott just somehow, we got to talking on Instagram. And I said, man, and he said, I live over in Franklin. I was like, man, I live in Murphysburg. And I said, hit me up. His son was playing ball down the road from my house and went down there and talked to him. And then my wife and I went out and eat with him and his wife the other night. Man, and it's good to see Scott, man.
Starting point is 02:41:07 He's doing great, and he's a great dude, man. Put a good word in for me. I sure will. Because I like the guy. And I was like, I want to talk with them. Hang out. I want to hear stories. And so, and I was like, I saw a picture with Brad with them.
Starting point is 02:41:19 That's my end. Because we have a Mount Rushmore of guests we've tried to book on the show. It's a weird, it's a weird list. But it's Scott Stapp, Polkogen, Vanessa Carlton, and Post Malone. And we can't get those four. And so you can help us actually take one of the names off the Mount Rushmore. Absolutely, man.
