I posted a picture on my Instagram, and I'm not a big do-a-trend guy if I missed the trend. So if everybody's been doing it for two or three weeks, I'm not going to hop on because then I just feel like I look lame because I'm jumping on late. I like doing trends. So I didn't do one of those 2016 trends where it was post pictures from 10 years ago.

I would have because that's fun. And honestly, I went through my phone and tried to find 2016 pictures and couldn't find any. And then I was going to have to go through my Instagram and I was like, I quit. So I gave up, didn't. I got tagged in some people. but I never did one. I found a picture of me with a, it's a fish,

looking like a bass, and I was probably 12. I, L-O-L-Led. And so I just, oh, thank you. And so I just posted a picture, I was like 2016, went hard. In reality,

you were 11? 2004. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you were a kid. Cubs jersey. It was great. Shorts, too. Hardcore kid. And so I just posted that.

And everybody in the comments, like, there's no way there's a 2016, because I was like 12. Okay. Do you have like Joe Dirt's little brother or something? I did have a bit of a mullet. A little bit, yeah. Yeah. So I didn't hop on the trend, although the new trend that's about to happen that I did get on early was the tank. Saw that.

Yeah. That's funny. The what? Thank you. Oh, dude, tell me. The tank trend. So I've only seen two people do it. Oh, I saw yours.

Guys, I came in butts and you. Yeah. Point of view, World War III, but I got my ox cord, my phone, Bluetooth hooked up. Your face was great on that. And it's just, you're just singing one of your favorite songs, but you're fighting World War 3. And I thought it'd be funny to do chickadee china, the Chinese chicken. That's funny.

That's a trend I got in on early because I think a lot of people are going to do that one. Although I had to research how to do that one because I didn't see that filter anywhere. I looked on Instagram, didn't see it. I say research. Then I went over to TikTok and did a bunch of scrolling and then searched it and typed in tank. And that's where it comes from. And then you have to rip it from TikTok without the watermark. Got it.

And put it over on Instagram. But I did that one. So I think that's... You're ahead of that. I think that's one that's going to come. Mike, would you think that what's coming? Yeah, I've seen that one a little bit.

Yeah. The tank tunes. Yeah. Tank tunes. Playlist. But 2016, I didn't hop in on. It was fun. It was fun even to research pictures.

Like, even to go back and look... But how did you find your pictures? I have them all in the cloud. Same. 2016 was there. You would think I would. I don't have it. I Googled 2016.

Nothing came up. Yeah. Like, you could just hit years. No, I understand how it works. I did that. What you're going to want to do is go into your photo album. It says years and it gives you all the years. Dude, my life was crazy in 2016 because we were touring a lot.

And it was like, I just, I went from January all the way to December. And it was just like New Year's with a family, kids. I mean, my youngest probably was, we hadn't adopted yet. So my youngest was probably like three years old. And it's us and then us on the road. And then back at home, birthday party, us on the road. We were on the road a lot. A lot.

Yeah, and I saw a picture of you and Brandon. Yeah. Brandon looked like a child. I was. You look like a child with a beard. Yeah. And if I don't have a beard, dude, I look like I'm nine. Still?

Still? Still. Still. So this podcast, the concept is we're in 2016. And I have all the things that were happening. Oh, I love it. This is cool. So from when I say beep, we are now in 2016.

Okay. Not yet. Not yet. We're still here. And I have all the topics that we're going to talk about, but we're talking about them as they're currently happening. Okay. I love this. This is great.

Dude, we're not in the 20s. Dude, look at that. Wow. Bees loving. No, we didn't come back. We're literally in it. Oh, right, right, right. Yeah, we're not like where we were back.

We're just there again. It's like if we grabbed an old episode. Got it, got to. Okay, now I got to beep again. Hold on. Good to see everybody on this day in 2016. Yeah, nice. Beautiful.

Man. Everything so bright. The future. So, you're talking about Chris Ableton for a second? Oh. Who? No, no. He's already doing it.

Yeah, 2015 is whenever he did that last year. I didn't know. Okay, okay. Yeah, man, I know. It's been a difficult year for you. Yeah, dude, that new guy. I was there last year when him and Justin Timberlake did the thing. Yeah, 2015.

2015 was the CMA Awards when he came out with this. Okay. So 2016, Chris Dapleton is. still dominant. It's kind of crazy because he didn't just have a big year. He's pretty much doing something that we don't see anymore.

Traveler came out in 2015 and this record is still selling, still streaming, still winning awards, and it's a rare condition this day and age. It's one of those rare things where somebody just exists

on an award show randomly. It pops so hard and then everybody is exposed to their music. It's almost like back in the day, 50s or 60s when someone will come on a television show and that's how the exposure happened. Yeah. But here we are a year later and the guy is not chasing radio trends. He's not doing pop crossovers. He's really just being Chris Ableton. So he's not wearing any leather. He's still

staying true to his original wardrobe, which is just like a denim shirt. It's pretty cool. And jeans. A denim shirt. And boots. Yeah. You know, like that's all he's wearing, you know, Which is like, you see, every time you see like a little success, like, oh, the clothes start changing a little bit. A lot of people don't know this about what Chris Stapleton, though. What is that? Used to be lead singer of steel drivers. Oh, yeah.

That's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They were good. Man. I'm going to be honestly, this is hard for me. This is so hard because I'm like, even the way I'm reacting, I'm like, is that right? Is that 2016? Like, I know so much.

I'm so knowledgeable now. I was about to say, yeah, I just bought Chris Stapleton CD. And I did. Traveler? Yeah. He was also the lead singer of the Jompson brother. after that. Here he is.

Big songwriter. Sang with Justin Trevor like a year ago. And now he's still killing it. Last year, 2015. Yeah. We don't have to keep saying that. We know what last year is. I'm just reminding myself.

Okay. I have another one. That's good. This new artist who's not even signed yet, Luke Combs is kind of breaking the system. He's a North Carolina kid, right? Yeah. Something hurricane, right?

Well, he's got this song out now that's online. And it's called Hurricane. And so he hasn't signed a record deal yet. There's a word he may sign pretty soon with Columbia. Okay. No, is that the shirt he wears? That's Columbia. Yeah, fishing shirts.

Then he may he'll wear in the future. That's right. You know, our buddy, Zach Massey, was out the other night and he saw him at losers. And he said that he played hurricane and the place went wild. Oh, I saw that picture he posted. Yeah, Luke Holmes did not come up the normal way. No massive radio launch. No big award show push.

No polished. introduction. He's been in town to writing songs, but he's a kid from North Carolina that's got a song that is really doing well online. I expect big things. What record label do we expect him to sign with? Maybe Columbia and Nashville. Is it? Oh, Columbia in Nashville? Let's see. Sony? Let me see what record label we think he'll sign with. Yeah, yeah. I hope it goes well because when it rains, it pours, you know? Well, that's interesting. Yeah. Oh, it is Columbia. I was right. So it's the shirts and the record label. His shirts are, is it Columbia?

Yeah, Columbia, yeah. He also, I hear he's looking to work with Crocs to do his own Combs. They'll never come back. That would be cool if he worked with Crocs. Those things will never come back. No, and then people put those dumb things on them. No chance.

I just saw it on his phone. Oh, when you were with him. Oh, you saw it on his phone? Yeah, yeah. Why are you looking at his phone? He showed it to me. You didn't say you knew him. He said, look at this picture of me of my first show ever in North Carolina.

He showed me a picture of him at an Eric Church show front row at Coyote Joe's. You know, you guys knew him so well. Man, he's just a normal dude. Dang, dang, dang, dang. All right, next up, it looks like, as of right now, in the year of 2016. Correct. This real dumb dude said that women are like tomatoes on radio. They're calling it Tomato Gate.

Really? Who said that? Oh, you don't know about this? I forgot about that. This was a massive story. It was so stupid from him to say this too. Oh, who said it? So in 2016, which is today.

Oh, yes, today. Yes, yes. The date. The industry is still dealing with fallout from what is known as Tomato Gate. The comment that female artists are basically just tomatoes on the salad. Not even real part of the salad. Is this Howard Stern? No. No, no. It's a country artist. No, it's not a country artist. It's a country music consultant, radio consultant. Oh, oh, oh. His name's Keith. What? Keith, go ahead.

You look like you knew. I forgot what year was. Sorry, go ahead. What were you going to say? I don't know. So, yeah, he said this and now everybody's, you know, all hurt. Consultant. Keith Hill is the guy that was like, yeah, women, just tomatoes on the salad. And so the uncomfortable part is female artists are being played dramatically less. Programmers are defending it. And now they're starting to be a bit of an angry revolution about it. What is the stage where he said that? I think it was like an industry.

Oh, so he said it out loud on a microphone and stuff. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, that's crazy. That's bad taste. I think it was Country Radio Seminar. And maybe he thought it would just stay in there. Let me see where it is. Because this just happened.

Yes. Yeah, because right now the only... I read it in a country air check. You read it in the country air check? All right, good deal. Good deal. We got that one. I like that publication.

He advocated the stations not play songs by women artists back to back and drew an analogy to salad. Male artists as a lettuce and female artists as the tomatoes. Whoa. That is crazy. This guy's never going to hear to the end of this. No, he's not. People 10 years later are going to be talking about this.

Yeah. I bet on that. And what are we calling this? Tomato Gate? Tomato Gate. You know I name it that right now? That's good, dude. Yeah.

Now, this doesn't have anything to do with country music because I doubt Beyonce ever gets into country music. Never.

Why would she? That would make a lot of people. She dropped lemonade with no warning, no traditional rollout. just said, here's the album. Got it on my iTunes. Oh, yeah, yeah. I think it was smart. Everybody.

Which is where I listen to all my music. No doubt. And people are going to download music forever. You know, people want to pay for it. Absolutely. No radio warm up, no months of promo, no lead single strategy. Just here it is. Well, that's, that's ballsy.

Pretty cool. Yeah. I don't know if it'll work. Who knows? But the internet basically shut down. And so I think the message was, you know, you don't need to be a little. you know, you don't need permission anymore. So I think we're starting to see it.

The old rules feel optional. Wow. It seems like she's starting to be the lettuce on the salad. Not the tomato? Mm-hmm. Yep. I think streaming is starting to really do its thing. I don't know, man.

Okay, you say that. You don't believe? No, come on. I'm going to be buying songs off iTunes forever. Oh, no. Man, I don't know. I think stream is. I want to own my music, so I would like to pay a dollar and keep that song forever.

$2.99. $2.99? Or maybe $1.99. The price went up? No. What was it mic whenever it stopped? $199? Yeah.

What year were we in right now? 2016. Okay, cool. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Did you say beep? So, 2016, the charts are starting to feel weird because songs are huge if they're on the radio or if they're streaming really well.

Like there's starting to be, for the first time, two different ways to actually. make an impact on the charts. I've seen the kids use this. They have streaming apps and stuff, right? You have? Yeah. Like, just on the computer? You're three-year-old?

No, my older would. He's older. Oh, got it. Yeah, he's streaming music and I think something called IHeart radio app. Oh. Good deal. Very cool. Something else just dropped this new show called Stranger Things.

Oh, that sounds weird. What's it about? I'm glad you ask. It's very nostalgia based. Oh, cool. Yeah. So, you know, 80s music is all in it. Since kids on bikes, but it's about this girl.

And I'm not sure because I haven't seen the first episode yet. But it's about this girl who's been in a facility. And, you know, they think she's got some kind of, you know, super normal powers. Oh, really? Supernatural powers. Have you seen it, Mike? Yeah, that's pretty good. First episode was great.

Like, one of the kids goes missing trying to find him. He loves a good kidnapping. Not a kidnapping story. He just loves a good kidnapping. Yeah. So you think there's a one and done kind of show? I don't know. I think it's very much, you know, people love nostalgia.

I think I bet on it to get at least one extra season. Okay. Okay. So two seasons. By 2018, this show's probably long gone, you know? Right. So yeah, Stranger Things just dropped. Oh, that's crazy.

I guess a couple other things. I don't know about you guys, but this election just feels different. You got Hillary Clinton and Donald. Trump. You know, it's just not the same anymore, man. It just feels, it just feels angrier. Everything feels meaner. Yes. Now, Hillary Clinton's a big favorite.

You're talking about Donald Trump, the reality guy? The reality star guy? Oh, the apprentice guy. Apprentice guy? You're fired. Yeah, but he's been running guys for, like, over a year. Yeah, I know. But you don't think. I don't think I mean, he's the underdog, big time. Uh-huh. Yeah, everybody, it's almost

a given that Hillary Clinton's going to win. Right, there's no way he gets elected. Yeah, even if you want to avoid politics, you can't avoid this. The 2016 election, Trump and Hillary Clinton, it does not feel like past elections. It's louder. It's meaner. It's more personal. It's way more online. Yeah. She would be the first woman president. And he would be the first, first reality. Reality star president. Yeah. So, you know, just that's what's up. Big election. Weird times, man. Yep. So we'll see what happens, it may not change anything. Nothing.

I bet 10 years ago, 10 years, I bet 10 years from now, man, we'll be just, it's be the same. Like another day. Yeah. Same thing. Whatever. Have you guys thought about Bitcoin? What is that?

in Chicago, the Cubs lost to the Indians, but I remember Wrigley Field and all of Wrigleyville, it was so packed. You couldn't even walk the streets without, it's not even bumping anybody. You bumped, you were touching somebody the entire time you existed.

It felt like what Times Square looks like. And I never been to that because it looks miserable. It does look miserable. That's what it felt like outside the stadium. That's what it felt like inside the stadium. But everybody was so happy. I was going to say,

The Cubs had it won since 1908. Then it had been since 1945. Curse of the Billy Goat. So everybody was so happy being so tight, and they lost that game. And then Game 7 was during the CMAs. And it was the first time that I had been invited to be on network television presenting an award ever. And I turned it down so I could stay home and watch Game 7. Wow.

So I did not go on CBS. I think that's where it was on CBS that year, the CMAs. I stayed home and I watched Game 7 and the Cubs were losing. and rain delay hit then the Cubs won it was awesome and yeah that was my first TV offer

to go and present an award show and I said no but you're such a diehard Cubs fan I was I literally am sometimes people go like you're not a real Cubs fan yeah no you are like bro you don't even know I don't feel the need to constantly beat my chest about it because I am

you know there's a I don't need to prove it to anybody but yeah I skipped out on my first network television when you went did you take your stepdad? No, I took him later. He had never been to Wrigley, and I took him when I threw it the first pitch out.

I love that. That was super cool, because he's who made me a Cubs fan. And so I took him, I've taken him since again, but yeah, I got the first pitch out, that's pretty cool.

But it wasn't that year. Was your team at the time, like your management team, where they're like, what are you doing, man, you got to take this off? I don't think I had a management team then. Okay, okay.

you don't chase them You just grab them, right? Yeah, you just walk around and then they pop up. It was just dumb. I'd be at a red light and, like, you know, in my car and pull it up and be like, oh, my gosh, there's one in the park right here across the street. There's a squirtle right next to me. I'm going to my phone walking around.

Didn't somebody die? Oh, I'm sure, like walked out in front of cars or cliffs or something. That's so dumb. Because, yeah, you'd hold your phone up and you would follow the signal. Is that still a thing, Mike? I think it's gone away, yeah. Fake news goes mainstream. Viral misinformation on social media becomes a recognized political force for the first time.

That'll never end. I'm telling you right now that'll happen forever and ever. What year are you in right now? No, current. I'm going to be sarcastic. Oh, okay.

I'm being sarcastic. Like that's... I think though, if we're in, we're today talking, right? I think what AI will do, as I think AI will eventually build a way

to stomp out misinformation if they want it to. A lot of the reason they don't want it to is because it creates engagement and more engaged, it gets the longer you're on these sites, the more money they make.

It's why they feed you things that make you angry because we stay longer with things that make us angry than things that make us happy. I think if people get so fed up with misinformation that it starts to keep us off these sites, they will then train their AI to eliminate things that are misinformation. But then the problem with that is

you then have a bias, because they could also train AI to not push forward into the algorithm certain political beliefs, even if they're true. So it's a slippery slope, but I could see AI eliminating all of that if they wanted it to. You would basically, though, need a board of different-minded people constantly changing or monitoring what they're allowing and not allowing. I think where the problem was in 2016 was breaking news. I remember the problem being with breaking news, right? Like, where back, you know, back with mainstream media, they'd had to double check before they announce anything. Like, all right, is this double check,

check with your sources, call the authorities, call the police department, call the chief, make sure that this is accurate before we announce it. And there were just so many different, you know, social media was just, no, breaking news, this is happening. So the mainstream media, the networks are just like, well, we can't let social media beat us. So then let's just report whatever we hear. Yeah, was everybody trying to figure it out at the same time. And to be the first. I think, and I think there's enough data to back up what I'm about to say. I think the reason that the misinformation happened so dramatically, 2015, 2016,

is because of that election. And I think you were seeing, and they do it now a lot. You're seeing outside forces try to get in and split us apart. Right. Now we know it's Russia. We know it's China. know we know all these bot farms coming from all these different countries. We didn't know what that was then, but they were doing that against us.

And you can look at like Cambridge Analytica. There's a whole documentary on that. That's exactly what was happening. So we didn't know that. We just thought people were just being funny or just putting out fake news. But it was an absolute, I don't even know how to do. But there was an agenda. And we were falling for it.

Yeah. And we still do. We still do. Yeah, there was absolutely an agenda. And it turns out it was like adversarial forces doing it. It's crazy. We just didn't know that. Now we do know.

We still fall for it. And we still fall for it. Even though we know. In health and science in 2016, Zika happens. Do you remember Zika? Uh-uh. Yeah, the virus, right? Do you know what it was?

Mosquito? Zika was, yeah, I think Zika, you could get it from mosquitoes. It's right. Around pregnancy, if you were pregnant, you had to, like, avoid mosquitoes because it would get birth defects. Oof. Yeah, I don't know, 2016. What a year, man. Crazy year.

Lost some good people, had Zika. Got faked out by the news a lot. Peyton Manning, went in the Super Bowl, retiring, right? Was that 2016? Yeah, 2015 season, but. Oh. Yeah. Right?
