She sings popular songs, but as a Disney princess, a lot of punk stuff, a lot of pop stuff from the 2000s. And she's so good. And so we're going to talk with her. She's going to sing a little bit, but she has a new EP that's out. It has perfect Simple Plan with the lead singer of Simple Plan. It has some good Charlotte. It has a lot of great artists that we'll talk about. But she's classically trained and she was just on social media

singing popular songs as a Disney princess and it popped off. She has millions and millions and millions of followers and I'm always so interested in people who made it by just doing random things or talented at. Here she is Lauren Paley.

Hey everybody, welcome to this episode. These are always fun for me because I get to bring in people whose work I enjoy just by being on social media and just reaching out. And so our guest today I had never met her until about

five minutes ago when she sat down. And so I enjoy it so much. I've actually played parts of it on the radio show. And so her name is Lauren Paley. Lauren hi. Hi. Now you get to be here. Now it's not all third person.

So I'm going to do my interpretation of what you do. Then you correct me. Okay. She sings normal songs in a Disney princess voice. And she's such a good singer. Like it sounds Broadway-esque. And I was just, I was just so entertained by like songs that I like even from my childhood sang like that.

How's that description? That's great. Honestly. So one of my many lives I lived on social media has been this series. And it's coined as punk ghost princess because I've sung a lot of punk emo songs from the early 2000s. But I've honestly done a lot of things. Like I just did like Iris by the Goo Goo Goo Dolls. Like that's not punk.

It was so good. Thanks. I forgot to mention that. Well, we've only been on 11 seconds, so I guess I had plenty of time to get to it. That one was really good. Thank you. That's our next one. That you're going to do as a real song?

Yeah. Top of mind because Google Dolls just reposted some of my content. Actually, they stole it and then reposted it. But you know what? I don't care. It's okay. It's the Google Doll. It's fine.

They can steal anything they want. So what was the first song you put online? Ever? That you did this. Okay. So the first thing I ever did was teenage dirt bag. that was the first one that I ever did. And then it kind of started a trend.

I was like, wow, people were doing it. And like a few other girls were doing teenage dirtbag as well. And then they kind of also started doing their own thing as I started doing more and more of them. And I love that it became kind of a fun trend. But yeah, teenage dirtbag started it. All Disney princess. What do you call it Disney or do they care? They don't care, actually.

I mean, I don't say it when I actually put out. songs. It's not, it's Disney adjacent is what I like to call it, but yeah, they're, they're pretty supportive. At least my friends at Disney are supportive of it and think it's cool because they released something called a whole new sound where it's a full Disney emo album. It's like a bunch of punk emo bands singing Disney songs in their style. So it's kind of, so I kind of flipped and reversed it and now sing it in a princess style, but the punk songs. So did that first, the We just Teenage Dirt Bag. Did it go extremely viral immediately?

It did really well to the point where I was like, oh, people like it. Maybe I should do more. Were you singing already on social media before that, but just singing as you were? I've been on social media a while. My social media career started a little bit pre-pandemic in 2019, but that's when I started. Actually, my first viral video on social media was singing a Lizzo song in the style of a Disney princess. So I've been doing this shtick for a bit, but then I actually started singing in my garage stairwell and not just Disney songs, just singing in the stairwell. And then that's

what I became known for online. And then I moved. So I sang in literally close to here, a garage stairwell. And that was my thing for like four years. Then I had a baby started singing a lot of Disney songs to her and then kind of my whole content kind of just shifted into motherhood, Disney, lullabies, sing-alongs, and then and then now this. Would you consider yourself a full-time influencer or a content creator, I should say, not influencer? Yes. So did you have to commit at some point fully to it and go, I am only focused on this

because if I'm only halfway in, I'm not in? Yeah, I think the pandemic kind of forced a lot of people just to be like, all right, this is this is what I'm just going to do because there's really nothing else to do right now. And also, I have a degree in musical theater. And I always wanted to do music. But moving to Nashville, I felt like I didn't fit in. I wasn't really a country singer. I tried the songwriting thing for a bit. And then honestly, I downloaded TikTok. And that's why I was like, this is really fun. I don't know if I can make a career out of it. But I'm, might as well start posting, especially when everyone's on lockdown and we don't really have

anything else to do. And then it became my full-time thing. Did you sing in high school? I did. My whole life. Or did you do like productions? Theater. Yep. Did you ever try to make it as an artist? Not that that's not art, but here an artist is someone who plays a guitar and sings on a stage, original songs. Yeah. So the plan was always to go to, that my dream was to be on Broadway, like my whole life, even in college. And then towards the end of college, and then towards the end of college. I went to a music conservatory, so I studied musical theater. And then when I was there, I did an emphasis in songwriting. So I started songwriting and I was like, maybe I just do this instead. Maybe we moved to Nashville and I pursue songwriting. I was kind of like feeling a little

bit rebellious. I didn't really want to do what everyone else in my class was doing. I didn't want to go to New York anymore. I just didn't want to live that life. And then I moved here and tried to pursue songwriting for a bit and I still love songwriting but that's when I was like oh back then it was very country when I was singing at these writer rounds I was like I'm singing like a little pop princess over here and then people are singing their country tunes and I just felt awkward and so did you ever audition for Broadway stuff in New York um I have auditioned for a lot of stuff I haven't auditioned for have I auditioned for a Broadway show I'm trying to I remember my entire life story right now.

We're big Broadway guys here. We know a lot of Midtime. We love it. No, no, we get a whole episode on how stupid we are at musicals. Yeah, yeah. We tried to list as many as we could and we got to like three and a half. You're like, Hamilton.

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. That's very, very popular. It's funny hearing like about musical theater from people that didn't study it because I'll just have people coming up to me like, sing something from Phantom of the Opera. I'm like, I had no idea people loved it so much. I don't ask you that.

I was going to ask you to do that. No, but I actually don't think I've ever auditioned for a Broadway show. Now that I think about it. That's bad. It's bad. But I live here now, you know. You can audition for a different Broadway show here. Yeah, Broadway.

Broadway. I do little shows called Off Broadway at the Hutton Hotel. And we do like little cabarets and they bring in Broadway stars and we sing with them. And I still consider my. I'm very much musical theater influenced. And you can hear it in my way. That's my training. That's just how I was brought up.

So I'm just interested in the songs that you sing. Do the artists ever reach out even through DM and go? That was really cool that you just sang my song like that? Always. A lot. Tell us some good ones. Okay. Well, the coolest one is, so I just released a five song EP called Punko's Princess.

And the last song we wanted to do on the EP was perfect by a simple plan. And it was my dream to have Pierre the lead singer collaborate with me on it. And my producer, Cole, he was like, just DM him. Because he had been following me for like over a year, interacted with my stuff all the time. It's just like cool. He's just online a lot. And so then I was like, I don't want to because if he says no, that's going to really hurt my feelings. And then just I'm just going to want to give up.

But Cole was like, just do it. If he says no, we're still going to do it. We're still going to put perfect on the EP. And I was like, okay. So I messaged him. I DMed him. And he responded like pretty quickly. And he was like, hey, Lauren, this sounds awesome.

Let me talk to my peeps and I'll get back to you. And I was like, that's not a no. that's like a BRB. I'm going to ask some people what I should do. And then I didn't hear from him for like a month. And I was like, oh, it's okay. Like he's busy. It was really nice how he responded.

And I honestly, we just resigned to the fact that maybe it's not going to happen, but let's record it. Let's get it recorded and send it to him and just be like, hey, this is what it sounds like. Well, we didn't do that. Life got ahead of us. And Cole hadn't even like, we hadn't even started working on the track. And then all of a sudden, when I am lying in bed, I had just put my daughter to bed. I'm just lying next to her.

And I see a DM from him. And I'm like, oh, my gosh. And I didn't even want to open it because I just saw, hey, Lauren, I'm like, this could go two ways. And I opened it. And it was like, hey, Lauren, I'm so sorry. It's taken me so long to get back to you. Like, I dropped the ball on this, but we're so down. Like, we want to do this.

Like, let's get this set up. And it was so cool. And then we got on a call with him. in his management and got the track done. He recorded, we recorded separately and then we shot a music video together like in June. Was it so cool to hear the song done when you got it sent back to you with him on it? Oh my gosh. Well, he was also sending me voice memos while he was recording and I was like playing them like,

oh my gosh, I'm getting my own mini concert from like my middle school crush. I was like, I'm obsessed. This is amazing. It was really cool to hear our voices together. And it's a different style. Like the song is completely reimagined. And Pierre, you can tell he's like kind of putting a little bit more maybe musical theater. Like you can tell he's singing the notes a little bit more legato.

Like he's changing his tone. It doesn't sound like the original perfect, which we didn't want it to. Like we can't compete with that. We wanted to do completely different, something different. And it turned out really well, I think. It's like simple plan meets the greatest showman meets. Disney Princess. I'm a simple plan

slightly above casual because I worked in pop and hip hop but I like simple plan and Mike's a big punk guy. Do you consider them pop punk? Yeah, do you like

Simple land? I do. Probably not when I was younger. I was like, I like a hard enough. But like over time I've grown to like them a lot. I like, do you know perfect?

No. Sorry can be perfect. That one. I'm just a kid. I'm just a kid and life is a nice. That one, that one's like, that's like their most, that's like, I'm a dick, I'm a dick, I'm a dick. No, I'm just a kid.

Okay, yeah. Different. But you don't know perfect? Just keep going, keep going. No, I don't know more. Hey, dad, look at me. No. But the chorus, though.

Sorry, I'm there. Perfect. It sounds familiar, but no. I do anything. Well, everyone's trying so hard. Come on. Uh-uh. When you finish it, but you've been inside of it for so long.

Did you still love it? Could you love it even though you've been in the guts up it the whole time? Yeah, I listened to it on the way here. Okay, good. I need to get in the zone. I'm like, I need to remind myself because I have such imposter syndrome. I'm like, I did this. Like, this is really cool.

Imposter for what reason? Like, what do you think you don't deserve? I don't know. All the things. You know, I don't know. Just coming here. or I'm like, do I even deserve to be here? I don't know.

We have the same thing about ourselves. Yeah, every day. I think everybody has it. I own the building and I'm like, do I haven't deserved to go into this building? And we have nothing to listen to on the way here. That's so cool. Whenever you're putting these songs out, when did you, like, when did you know that this was working to where you had to start constantly thinking of new stuff to do?

Because there's a difference in just creating content and having, because I was talking one of the guy yesterday was asking me. He said, hey, what should I do? And I have this whole thing about podcasting now where I believe that there are so many interview shows. Now, everybody has an interview podcast, and unless you're super famous, and even then, it's impossible to cut through. And I'm lucky I've been doing it for over 20 years, so I have a very built-in base. But to start new right now, I would say almost impossible. However, I think the pendulum is swinging to people who can go one straight to the camera. Because everything's interview. And if I have a great guest, they've been on 11 shows already,

and maybe you list them on mine, but they've just done a whole tour. But the only thing you can't replicate is me talking to a camera about myself, right? I was giving him this speech, and I was like, what you should do is find something you can do 25 episodes on that you can do by yourself and commit to that because I feel like that's where it's going.

I think that's what works. When did you realize the singing punk or pop songs in a Disney style? was actually working that you had to constantly think of new ones. Well, honestly, it wasn't that hard to think of new ones. I had been dying to sing. So I have a history of singing a lot of Disney music on my social media. And I have a big Disney fan base.

And singing to my daughter has been like a big part of my content, just like sing-alongs. And there was, I got a comment that said, do you sing anything else but Disney? And I was like, yes, I do. But I post this because I know you guys like it. But I was like, what others? I love so much, I love so much different music. And then I was thinking about like my favorite music is like early 2000s. Like my middle school, just punk, all the stuff that was on the radio. That was such a nostalgic time period for me. And I was like, I want to sing this stuff. But I still want my audience to be in support of it. I don't want them to scroll away. So I wanted to do something kind of in the middle. And also I want to sing this stuff. And also I want to sing. I want my daughter to learn these songs. I'm like I don't, I love Disney and I love that she loves Disney music, but I want her to learn other stuff, especially like the stuff that I grew up with. And so it was partially for my audience, partially for me and then partially to introduce my daughter to music I like.

My daughter is five months old now. Oh, baby. And yeah, for sure, baby. I would never had a baby. So this is the first one. Congratulations. Thank you. I only have one.

And I'm trying to introduce her to music. And my wife is 12 years younger than I am, so we have different music. And so with me, like last night, it was Beastie Boys Cracker. I'm trying to think of what the playlist was. It was the night before it was Dr. Dre. Oh. I know, and that's tough. But babies don't know curse words yet.

No, no, no, yeah. It's too early. her first word zf word i'm gonna be in trouble that's like a parrot when a parrot starts to say it you if that's the first word um i did uh you got what i need that's a fun one to sing too so i've been trying to introduce that music to her i'll show i don't we don't show the camera i'll show a picture well i love babies you know i only have ever held one and a half babies it's scary holding babies now i like i won't even hold my friend my friend just had a baby and i'm scared It's a lot of responsibility.

Oh my gosh. She's a doll. You have to say that. This is the whole thing. No, no. No, no. She's a doll. I tell him that he doesn't believe me. She's very cute.

I don't believe anybody about anything. I mean, you know, there's no argument, though. Like, she's very, very cute. I told him that if she wasn't cute, we would just be like, oh, I love that. We wouldn't say she's so cute. I'd go, aw. So what if I did then? all babies are cute

Beastie boys in Disney style Totally Start your own series I don't even know how you would How you would do that How old's your daughter? She just turned four Oh so she still really thinks you're cool then

It's funny because I just did something really cool I sang background vocals in the Disney Princess Ultimate concert in Disneyland last week And it's on Disney Plus right now And she just casually watches And she's like mama And then she like moves on with her life I'm like, I'm standing next to all the original Disney princesses

singing background for them. And she's like, cool, okay, anyways. Let's go play. Has Disney reached out to you at all? Do you want to be a princess? That's my dream. Would that be fun? I don't know.

I would love to voice a new princess. That would be the ultimate. So this honestly was such a dream working with Disney last week. That was amazing. And just like being amongst literally all of my princess. idols and just hearing them saying just in rehearsal. We had like an overnight rehearsal. So it was just us in the parks because we performed in Disneyland.

Have you been to Disneyland in California? California, yes. At World of Color. So the whole show, you should watch it. I hate World of Color. I'm colorblind. Oh, no. Yeah.

She sees a tear run down my eye and I start to think of the time. He just asked, what color is that? I'm so sorry. To me, it's world of all the same. You ever been to the world of all the same? Yeah, you go, it's pretty amazing. It's all the same. I feel really bad now.

But it's still a beautiful show to listen to, too. Not just see it. Yeah. I don't know if you're, do you play things for your daughter? Does she screen at all? Like screen time? It's not really screen time. It doesn't count because it's like concert.

Officially no. Okay. Unofficially? Yes. Behind closed doors. When it's just you two? Yes. Yes.

My wife is very, we don't want to give her. phone and have her. But I like to show her the videos from Sing. Yeah. Because they're current songs. So I like that. Yeah. I'm still standing.

Oh, yeah. It's so good. Yeah. Sing is great. So those movies were good. And then it's cartoons and they move fast. And, oh, man. I've showed her to Miss Rachel, too.

She's the best. I love Miss Rachel. She's like I love Miss Rachel and always. Miss Rachel followed me on TikTok. I forget how many years ago. three years ago maybe and I I don't really get super starstruck but I literally like screamed

I was like it's Miss Rachel like I was freaking out because she I just love her Me too and I like what she stands for outside of being Miss Rachel and all the colors and also she started very organically yeah like just making it

when I first watched her video I was like what is going on because I feel like people don't understand until they have a child like the exaggeration speaking and stuff, you're like, this chick is crazy. But then you're like, oh, actually, she's a genius, and I love her. And we're co-parenting. I watched a TikTok, and all it was was a compilation of a lot of late baby early toddler.

I don't really know what to call a baby yet. I call it late baby early toddler. Perfect. All of them reacting to Ms. Rachel's, that she go like, hi, hello, or whatever she says at the beginning. And I'm talking, the kid can be asleep. She can wake you from the dead with that. No way. It was like 15 in a row.

That's amazing. I do find myself too on TikTok watching and laughing at baby videos. Because I had no idea. I had no idea. I bet you I sent my, because my wife and I will send TikToks and they used to be like funny things about, I don't know, adult stuff. I would bet you the last one that I sent her. Yeah. Everything changes.

Have you ever thought about that world? I have thought about it a little bit. I don't know. There's just, I feel like with the childhood development videos, I'm not a teacher. I think that's the main thing. But also, I just, I feel like I'm more of an artist. Like, I just want to release music or an actor because I would love, I have a, a background in acting too.

So my dream has been to get into voice work and start doing, voicing a character, like voicing a Disney princess is the ultimate dream. And I love the Miss Rachel's in that journey, but I don't know. I just, I don't know if it would fulfill me as much. Paychecks probably would be pretty good. That's pretty fulfilling. I know, I know.

But I'm like, oh, Miss Rachel's so good at it. Like she can do it. I don't know if I could do it as well. What about like Blurpy? Blippy? Yep. Okay. I was like, Blurpy sounds familiar.

Another story about blippy. I was just at the Moana live action premiere last month. And there's a lot of celebrities that go to like the Disney premieres. And I literally turn to my left and I see Blippy in full costume. And I was like, oh, another thing. Like I promise I don't really get like starstruck. But I was fan-girling over Blippy. Like I went up to him with my phone.

I was like, can we record something for my daughter? I was freaking out because he was in full costume and he is in character. And then I got sat with him for the movie. And he was out of character at that point. He's great. I hear he's really cool. Clayton. He's amazing.

No, he's just a great person. Yeah. Yeah. Super night. I'm sure he has a theater background too. Did he start? I may be messed up on this because, again, I thought he was Blurpee. So what do I mean?

Did he start? making videos for like his niece or something. Is that his, Mike, would you look that up? His, okay, so. So he's not the OG blippy though. So there's a man that created, yeah. Oh, I don't know about this. I know all the blippy tea.

Oh, no. They killed the original? So the original, I don't know what the deal is, but a guy started blippy. Would you say this guy killed the original? Yeah. Like, has that been a vest? I'm starting a conspiracy with the story. Okay, please tell us.

I honestly don't know if I know the full story. I just know that a man created blitz. And then they ended up, I don't know if he wanted to be the face of blipy and also running this empire that he created. And I think blippy was bought out by the cocoa melon people. Yeah, moonbug. Right. Yeah. I know all about this.

Okay. Dude made bank. And cocoa melon, is that international? Yeah, I think so. He sold the. Cocoa's huge. It's like baby shark. Yeah.

I speak a lot of the lyrics and I make it sound very like theatrical. But surprisingly, people have really liked that one. So numb. It's a lot of breathiness that I incorporate, which I feel like people think like, oh, she only knows how to sing like a princess. Like honestly, I sang Alto in college. I sing a lot of jazz too. I don't know what that means. Alto is like the lowest female voice part. So I only started singing soprano stuff

literally when I started on TikTok. I was like, I'm just going to do this for fun. And then, yeah, now I sing Phantom of Opera, soprano stuff all the time. And yeah. That's so cool. That is really cool. Did you watch your social media grow by leaps and bounds? Like, could you every day wake up and it was another so many more thousand people?

Yeah, I think the during the pandemic was like the huge leap where I kind of created this community. I was really consistent. I would post multiple videos a day. I would go live on TikTok. I would take people's requests. I would sing them. I would make people videos. I honestly just took requests and just learned songs and sang every single day.

And then that was awesome. And then I feel like when you grow a following and then you have a baby online, people, they feel like they know you, you know, like get to know you. you and they feel like they're following your journey. Plus, I've spoken into existence the fact that I've wanted to sing for Disney literally since the beginning. So my community that's watching me do these cool things, they're all like rooting for me too. So it has been really cool to just to watch my, like the numbers go up.

But now at this point, it's less about numbers and it's just more about community. Who pays more meta or TikTok? TikTok used to pay way better. Meta does not pay. Well, Facebook is better overall. Yeah, Facebook is better than Instagram. Yeah, I guess they all come from the same place. Instagram is not good for paying.

Instagram videos, you don't make any money at all. No, they're like, here's your payout for 0.2 cents. I'm like, thanks. That's why I post pictures. Yeah, all pictures. Or post aeros sales. movie feel like my producer cole he's he's really amazing and he I don't know anything about this stuff like when he asked me he messaged me and said do you want to record these he DM'd me I had never met him we had been following each other and I was like yeah and he just took everything that I would have wanted and put it in the track and it's just it feels magical and that's really fun I mean this feels magical it really does thanks so I am a genuine fan because again I was I was talking about your stuff months and months ago. And then... You know, someone messaged me and told...

Like, I had a flooded DMs. Like, I heard you on Bobby Bones. Really? Yeah. Oh, that's nice. And I was like, oh, what did he say? And they were talking about you singing like a Disney princess. I was like, yeah.

Yeah, I was playing like in your car singing. Yeah. Because it was so good and raw, right? And everything's so polished on social media. Or a lot of stuff so polished. And especially when it comes to performing. Yeah. But it was so raw and it was like such a wholesome feeling.

and it was also songs I really liked. So it was that perfect stew. Yeah, you're awesome. I hope that people stream this record like crazy and I hope you get to do whatever it is your heart desires as far as with Disney. Thank you so much. That's so cool.
