This is Talk to Check. Now here's your host, Chuck Wicks. A little nervous today. I'm nervous and fade down the music, nice and easy. Do I look different? I sound different to you guys. Anybody? I don't look a little like I'm glowing.

You look a little like daddish. A little daddish. A little daddish, yeah. That is the voice of our guest, Carly Pierce, coming in hot. Yay! Yeah, coming in hot. This is the first one back, Carly, for me. since having a baby.

It's the, oh my gosh, I didn't realize it was the first one. Oh, see, that's why you looked at it. Thank you. It took a week off. Oh, needed it. I'm sure you need longer than that off. I know, I pushed with my wife. I pushed with her.

Every time they was like, all right, here it is. We're going to go for the push. And I would push with her. I would like, hold my breath. I would count the 10 and I got a lightheaded. I got a little lightheaded. I got a little lightheaded. Did you get any gifts at the end like she did or no?

No. No, no, no, no. No, sir, clean up aisle four. We're going to need you to leave. Who did that, Chuck? This whole time. He was so, Carly, how are you doing? I'm great.

Just thinking about you pushing. Thank you. It was one of the most magical moments of my life. Seriously, cried right before they said, okay, this next, the nurse goes, the next push, it's going to be it. We're also very close to a train right now. The train is with us. The train is with us. And I go, this is it.

So this is it. Train's coming, Chuck. She's coming real close. And Cassie and I looked at each other. And we just started, we lost it. Because we knew the next one, boom, we're gonna see our baby. And we were very nervous about it. Very nervous about seeing the baby.

What was like the, what did you feel like the first time you saw him? Emotional because the first thing I did was check all, you know, make sure it was normal and healthy and because you don't really know either and you just want to look at it and make sure it's normal we had a big scare actually before like 10 days prior to having little tucker we you know we had our last ultrasound and i didn't really plan on talking about this but you asked and we're going to go for it um you get percentiles measurements of the baby so you know the head is like oh it's in the 60th percentile and the you know the stomach is in the 80 percent Everything was like great.

And they go, well, we have one concern. And I wasn't not allowed to go to the doctor with her. So I was waiting at home. She gets out of the car and she's sobbing. And I'm like, what is happening? And I know this. It's only happened two or three times in our life together where I know something is bad has happened.

So she comes home and she couldn't even like talk about it. And she goes, his limbs, his arms and his legs are measuring in the one percent. time, which means that's not good. When everything else is normal. And they threw out very, very scary words and terms. They threw out, you know, dwarfism. They threw out really scary stuff for us to hear. And so for 10 days, we, the doctor literally says, listen, you know, I have to tell you

about these numbers. It is what it is. I think everything's going to be fine, but we're not going to know until he's born. Fast forward to what I just told you about. Hey, next push, baby's coming. And everything just hit, especially Cassie. She just like lost it. And so when I saw a little Tucker, Elliot Wicks, get pulled up and put on mommy's chest,

and I checked them, I go, those are not one percentiles. Those are very nice, healthy, beautiful limbs. We were so excited. And that's all you care about. As a dad, now I can say as a dad, all you care about is having a healthy baby. So glory be to God. Yeah. Oh, yay.

And I stare at it. I just stare at them now. I've changed the first diaper. Wow. Oh, that big deal. Was it tar like you predicted? Oh, I didn't change that one. Oh, no, I didn't change that one.

I called the doctor in for that one. I was like, this is a really bad, Doc. You would change this diaper. When a baby first has their first movement, Carly. Because it's a movement. Yeah. It's like tar. Really?

It's really thick. I mean, you could pay. ever rode with it. I would have never thought about the first movement. Thank you. But here we are. But listen. Listen, guys, once you do, here we go. It is something that you just want to never, never see again. I will see that for a while. Yeah, I'll send you a picture. Great. Thank you. I need that. You brought up, you, you brought a welcome baby gift for me. I'm going to open it up here. I did. Now, also, just make sure that you tell Cassie, I got a three to six month because I figured he's probably already

out of one to three or very soon out. I got him a little outfit. He needs to you know, rock it out here. Oh my gosh. Look at those little pants. I'm all dyed. Look at these little sweatpants. The fact that those fit a human is so... Oh, he doesn't, he won't even fit in knees. He won't. Not yet.

Oh, they're so... See, it's like, I wanted it to be a little bit like a head, like down the road. Yeah, that's smart. That's smart. Because that's what everybody did and now we have no clothes on. No, no clothes for it. I called it. We have zero clothes for it.

His name is Tucker. He's not close for it. This is fantastic. So cute. So cute. The jacket is my favorite. He's got a jacket. Yeah.

This is great. He's going to be very, this is going to be very, uh, oh, look at the charing. Look, getting it cute and like it has like little ears on the hood. Oh my gosh. Okay. Oh. He's going to be like styling. Yeah, this is great.

Thank you. So cute. You do you want to be a mom pretty bad? I would like to be a mom. I'm a dog mom now. That's a lot. You know, how many dogs yet? Just one.

I just got her in June. Oh, no, dog. Her name is June. Really? Yes. June after June. June Carter. June Jolene Pierce.

Wow. Yeah, J.J.P. That's his country. I know. June Jolene Pierce. I thought, so I had, I have Cooper and Duke, two Cavalier, King Charles. And I always said, oh, he's my babies and my kids. Did you forget about him?

No, they go, wait. Yeah, well, come. Kind of. Yeah. They're like, wait to you have a baby. Like all my friends, like, wait to have a baby. I'm like, I don't know, right? And now I look at Tucker and I'm like, does somebody feed the dogs?

Yeah, and I forgot about them. That's fair. Forgot about the dogs. Who let him out? They're not on leashes. Poor Cooper and Duke. It's been a minute. It's been eight, nine, ten days, guys, since we've been back in the studio doing this.

It feels like a lifetime. It does. It really does. Everybody's kind of quiet. Usually we're like a little crazier. It has been a minute. A little crazier. But.

Wow, what was that? I don't know what that was. Carlin Pierce, she had one of the most played songs. Okay? Yes. 20-20 on Billboard. Hell yeah, she did. That is amazing.

I think, I'm going to hope I, hopefully this is the right button. That's a great song. So good. That's a good song. That's on my Spotify list. Is it? Oh, I'm listening to all time. Ran to it.

Oh, thank you. It was really good. How did that work? So Lee Bryce is on that with you. Yes. I just spent a whole. like three days with him. How did you survive?

I didn't. Yeah. Literally, I'm just now coming out of the coma. Yeah. I don't know how people survive with him. Why did you, did you pick him to sing that?

Yeah. So I wrote this song with Luke Combs. I wrote it as an apology to one of my ex-boyfriends. And when I wrote it, I knew that it was so special to my story that I wanted to single it. And Luke was just in the middle of putting out, when we wrote the song, I always say it was like before Luke,

Luke world domination. So a lot had changed. And I knew that I still wanted to put it out. He was fine with me taking it somewhere else. But I knew that it had to be like a special voice. And truly, I just knew it was Lee. And I had my manager reach out to his manager. I knew him, but not well.

You didn't know Lee that well. No. I mean, I had like played some shows with him and I was a fan. But I was like, I don't know if he's going to even like think I'm cool enough to sing song with. And I was like, I don't think he's done any duets. And so my manager reached out to him and literally within like 30 minutes they were like, Lee's in and within three days we had it.

Nice. He just loved it. And that was like what I wanted somebody to be a, I don't know, because he's such a good songwriter too. Yeah. He's good like that. I love him. Every time I ask him to do something, he's like, yeah, sure.

He's just, he's a great guy. We did a thing for the Green Berets and we did like a tactical challenge. All I had to say is like, Lee, you want to shoot guns? He goes, yeah. Of course. You don't know the commitments or anything? I'm like, it's two days, you got to jump on a bus. But we jumped on a bus.

He's a great writer. He picked up his guitar. He's like, let's write a song. I'm like, I'm tired, bro. Yeah. I'm tired. He wants to write songs like all the time. All the time.

Yeah. Was it easy for you to transition into a horrible singer like Charles Kelly when you, uh, did the CMT, TMA awards? Man, what a crazy like eight hours that was. I get a call for my manager and they're like, hey, are you sitting down? I'm like, well, no, I'm walking on a trail. And like, I hadn't told everybody that I had just, busted my mouth open. Like I chipped two teeth and had to have stitches in my face like five days

before the CMA. So I like made it to the day of our taping. And I'm like, thank you Jesus for making my face look kind of normal. It looked good. Thank you. Yeah, I knew you busted your mouth or something in your mouth. It was awful. I looked for it. I couldn't see anything. I feel like everybody looked for it and they just thought I got like bad Botox. And I was like, no. I wouldn't get bad Botar. You got good Botas. So I'm like, thank you Jesus that my face looks good enough to do this and then I get a call that Lee has COVID and I'm like in my head immediately I'm like well I'm out of the show or I'm going to have to do it by myself and that's going to be super awkward and Robert Deaton at the CMA is he was like I really think we should ask Charles

Kelly of Lady A and I love Charles he's all the Lady A and the Lady A clan they're good friends of mine and so I was like well yeah but like we're taping in like six hours and they called him and he was in and it just ended up being, and what's so crazy is one of their immediate family members ended up getting COVID. So really, the only person that ended up getting to perform was Charles because he had pre-taped with me.

So it was just like this funny. Oh, it pre-taped? It did. So was anybody in the audience when you pre-taped it? No. They had like other humans. Okay, but no stars. No stars.

Because I remember watching it, I didn't seem to pre-taped to me. I mean, you know. Does it seem pre-tapped to you guys? No, but that was, That was the magic. That's the magic of the CMA. That means they did their job well.

And not all of them were pre-taped by any means. And it was an interesting show to go to. It was weird, right? I mean, it was weird because this year is just weird. And I felt like all of us were kind of like, how do we act? And it was just odd to not have like fans in that energy. But it was cool to think the 40 of us that were in there were like bringing live music to people for the first time in months. How many more days we've got to put up with the 2020? How many more days?

Too many. Like two weeks, right? Yeah. Something like that. Good. That's too many. Are you ready for Christmas? I am. Yeah. All shopping's done? Um, yes, because it's all been like online. You're gonna go see your mom? I am. I love your mom. I don't even know your mom. I love her. She's pretty awesome. Is she like you? She's like you, right? I mean, she's shorter than me. Maybe even feistyer than me. Um, She's she's bit fire, but she's awesome. Okay, so you drive down. Is this where is this Georgia?

No, where is this? Alabama. Yep. I talked to you in Alabama, I think. You were like, that was where you're quarantined. Yes. Yes. And you had like glitter background.

She was already, like you know, okay. You don't understand like because we live in the world of Zoom now this year. I had to be ready. Carly did it right. I had like a cheetah lit up background. I was like, we're going to do it right. For real. You don't mess around.

Yeah, it's gone. That's amazing. You just released another song. Oh, no. Is this the one? With Buzzby on the front cover, I think. Yes. Okay.

I bet you're up making plans and places that you just can't wait to take us and we'll get to spend forever. Talking about whatever when I get there promise you'll track me down and show me around. Are you going to radio with that? No. You're not. I mean, I don't know what I'm going to radio with next. but I knew that that was like an important one. Yeah.

I do give radio ballads quite a bit, so you never know. It's your wheelhouse, though. Actually, you just had the most play with an uptempo. It's not your will house. I can do an up tempo. You know how I feel about you. I feel like, and I'm not trying to separate male from female, I'm just saying she's going to be the next female artist

or just artists in general inducted into the grand lottery. Ooh. Oh, my God. Come on. I like that. You got to put it in the universe. Manifest it. Manifest it.

I mean, I did just perform my 78th show last week. No big deal. It's like time. You're counting. Yeah, I'm counting. Wow. I have every hat show print. You do?

Yeah. Do you frame them all? I have them all together. It got to the point where it was like, I can't. I don't have a baby house for this. Mom, I got to buy a bigger house. I'm like, mom, I need a bigger house. I need a lot of wall space.

You know who will find space space? for it. Who? Your mother. We'll find. She totally well. She always wants one. My dad, they're always like, what do you have that we can have?

And I'm always like, like, they wanted a plaque. Right. So I give them things like that. That's nice of you. I know. 78 times. Yeah. That's a lot of times.

There's a lot of times. What is that like? That's just amazing. I just, I've always loved it. I grew up loving it. I grew up, like, wanting to be one of the people that really, like, takes it seriously. I feel like the last female to me that really. that really made it a part of her brand was Carrie.

Right. And in a lot of ways, that's what I want to do. I want to not only like play, but I want to be one of the faces of it. And I think that's two different things. Well, I think you have the sound for it for sure. Like, because some artists don't fit into that sound of what the opera is or the vision. Yep. You do. Yeah.

In a good way. Thank you for saying that. You know, we're interview. We tape everything. I tell people this all the time so they don't get fool. We're not trying to fool anybody. But our next guest coming in after you. Terry Clark.

And I love, she actually, backstage, she interviewed me at the opera one time. And I was like, I'm such a fan of yours. And she's like, then come sing with me on stage. Yes. So I sang better things to do with her on stage. Yeah. She was like, you know it? I'm like, what part do you want me to sing?

I'll be there. And we did it together and it was awesome. Didn't you sing? Didn't you sing? Where did you sing before you got to sign and everything else? Then you sing. Dollywood. Dollywood.

Yeah. You know, it was a big Dollywood or Dolly fan, Sammy Shea over there. I was just on her Christmas special with her. And that was like the most full circle. Because I was in her Christmas show at Dollywood. I was like one of the singers, but also they made me the snowman because I was the 17 year old that they could put into the snowman costume.

Wow. So I got to tell. No one saw your face. Nobody saw my face. But you sang your body. But I was there. That's all that counts. Man, that snowman can sing.

I know. It's a girl. It's a girl from the snow girl to singing with her on her Christmas special. That's cool. Was that the first time you ever, like, sang with her? Yes, like to be affiliated with her in that way. I've met her a few times prior to that because she meets all of her employees,

which I think is so cool every year. She's super nice. Why does everybody get to meet Dolly but me? She is awesome. Carly's going to get inducted to Opry and I'm going to meet Dolly. That's 2021. There we go. Let's go.

Let's go. I like it. Dolly, if you're listening, Opry, if you're listening, you've got some work to do. Yes. Would you crap your pants if I got Dolly to come here to talk to Chuck? I don't even know what I would do. Honestly, I don't know that I am nearly cool enough to talk to her.

I have no idea. Like, I don't think that I would freak out. I think I'd just like go mute and just like stare at her and be like, oh my God, I can't believe she's real. She's terrible. She's terrible. She is terrible. And I was like, no, she's terrible. She is very terrible.

It's a new word, folks. I like it. I just feel like so many people in my life have met her. Boy, I tell you, she is terrible. I'm not going to tell her that, but. Yeah, let's not describe her as that. Are you nervous right now? Stop, no.

Are you nervous that I'm going to ask you things? I don't know. I'm fine. No, she's having a good time. I'm having a great time. I mean, you make me slightly nervous. No, I've known Carly for a long time. Listen, I follow her on Instagram.

Get some new shoes. Back when you, didn't you like train for a race, like a big race? She said, like back in the day. Back in the day before you were a dad. She looks at me and she's like clearly. Yeah. It looks like you haven't trained in a while, but back in the day. Back when you did train?

Yeah. I was trained it all the time. Yeah. I actually talked to Cassie about it. I'm like, I promise you, I promise you, I'm gonna get back in training shape

when we first met. You fell in love with me, you know? She loves you for what's on the inside, Chuck. Which is what matters. She loves me for, yeah,

that's right. That's it. That's right. All right. All right. So do I look fatter? You literally look the same. I look the same?

Yeah. I don't know. I was pretty chiseled. I had like that. I had like a double child. jaw line. It wasn't a double chin. I had like jaw line for days. I was like grabbing his double chin. You sent, do you remember the video you sent me when y'all are on the bus? And you're like, wow, I'm really glad I'm losing my COVID-19. Sean Booth said it to me, but you were in the background. You're like, oh, dang, I look like I'm losing my COVID. I was like, all right, that's not what I ask either of you.

It was a good angle. It was a good angle. You didn't answer the question. I asked, though. I said, who won? And your response was, oh, man, I look better than I used to. I was like, Kay. She's talking about the tactical challenge. It's going to be on the Outdoor Channel next year. Okay. Okay. It was a big deal. Okay. Okay.

My grandpa was super, like all the Pierce side of my family, my uncle, my mom, like, as we say in Kentucky, Katie bar the door, it's like a saying. Yeah, my mom would whoops in my ass. Really? I love that. She ain't afraid to shoot. This is great. Yeah.

She's little, but she's mighty. Okay, you're in. Next year, you're in. Yeah, I'll do it. Because you get teamed up with two green berets. Oh. Hey. I saw some pictures and I was like, okay.

Listen, some of the green berets are pretty hot. All right. I'm not going to lie. I say this as a very straight man. Okay. That's very married. Some of them were very attractive. Okay.

Well, I'm very not married, so. They work out all the time. They know their way around a gun. Bye. Let's go. What could a lady want? Let's go. And you really, you only see him like, you know, 30% of the time.

That's even better. That's honestly, like, the best case. scenario right i'm here for it you still nervous i'm about to ask you about relationship stuff or what's no i'm not scared let's get into it all right all right what um when did you know it was wrong when did you know it was wrong your relationship with michael ray when did you when did it hit you um because i i'll throw it out there i love both of you equally separately together apart so there's no hate here yeah but did it like you just you're like nope they ain't where you're like nope they ain't because you wanted it to work.

Oh, yeah. Because you filed for divorce. I did. I would say that the moment that I knew was a little different. It was much earlier than when I filed. Did quarantine do it? Say a lot of people got divorced over quarantine. Totally.

I mean, I think, like, a lot of things in your life probably come to a head. When we do what we do, it's much easier to check in, you know, like, you're not really living together and you're not doing life together and you're not or you're able to like almost put on the facade right you hate me no i don't no i don't i just wanted to ask you as a friend i don't want to ask you as a friend because i think you know a lot of people wonder like oh they're both great people they you know what happened so but things do happen yeah cassie my wife she's been divorced you know i met her she she has three i have three beautiful bonus daughters now so everything happens for a reason oh and And I don't, like I definitely made the right choice for myself. Doesn't that kind of feel a little bit good now, though?

Yeah. Yeah. It does. I mean, look, like, I don't ever want, I mean, obviously, I think if you follow me on social media, like, this has been the worst year of my life. Right. In a lot of ways. It's also been, to me, the biggest year of, like, my career. It's been the biggest year of me taking ownership of who I am and knowing what I deserve and my worth.

And just really owning the fact that just because I'm an artist and my relationship is on a pedestal and I waited until I was 29 to get married doesn't mean that I'm not just like you. And oh, I'm going to be in front of everybody and be vulnerable. And I feel like I've always been vulnerable as an artist and tried to be honest. but this has made it go into like a whole another like I've had to decide is this going to define me or refine me right see I think this is the best thing that could happen I love that answer excuse me I love that you're honest with us and wanted to because you I know that you'll be stuck in some different interviews where you can't like I was hoping you would be honest with me and just be open well yeah just because we know each other outside of the industry stuff and you know I'll make you feel better I'll talk about

something that like and I'll that's why I wanted to ask you because no one really when I dated Julian Huff. I was dating another artist. You were dating another artist. We never got married, but, you know, we, everybody thought we met on Dancing with Stars. We didn't. We met on tour. We were out touring with Brad Paisley. You go out there, you know, we're both loving life and we're on a high because we're both careers are going great. You know, we start, we bought a house together, did all these things. And then out of nowhere, you find out that they're not the person that you thought they were, you know, and you break up. And then I had to, everybody wants to know why. And, you know, I found myself doing a CMA red carpet and we made a

pack together to basically lie to say, no, we just wanted to part ways. Everything's fine. It wasn't fine. You know, should hit the fan. You know, I'm not going to say, you know, I'm not going to say, I'm not going to throw anybody under the bus, but one my fault. You know what I'm saying? So, you know, you find yourself when you're in love, everything's great. People are loving, watching you on Instagram, seeing that, oh, this is the perfect couple, couple goals, all this stuff. But then, man, if something goes wrong, you got to face that too.

Yeah. And I think the hardest thing for me has been, you know, the headline that came out, Carly Pierce files for divorce. Right. Okay. And then because I'm a human, I want to know what people say. And I go and I read it. And it's way to give up on your marriage.

What a joke you are. You got married because you wanted publicity. And it's like I can only speak for me. And I will never speak for the other person. But I got married because I loved him. And I got married because it was real for me. And when you love someone, you trust them. And it just simply was not the best.

It was not anywhere close to being the right thing for me. And I hate that, you know, I think it's taught me like about moving too fast on social media and putting it out there too fast and just all those things. But I, again, like I'd like to wait two days before I. You know, maybe I should wait like a little. but I was in love and I was wrapped up in it and you get it. It's like it's such a high and you're going and it's like, oh my God,

I found this thing. And I think that at the end of the day, though, I don't regret it because I think it's made me better. Yeah, you learn from it. Yes. You know, I was in a horrible relationship before I met Cassie.

And I think being in that relationship to the level of where like, I wanted it to work. So I just made it work. but I was so blind to what was really happening. I mean, it was really bad. I mean, like, she was doing things that, like, you shouldn't do. Like, if you love somebody, you just shouldn't do that. One example, because my parents are here and my parents, my mother, when your mother does not like someone, people listen.

Because moms, moms know. They definitely know. Moms know. They see right through the bullshit. And I broke my neck. Okay. And do you remember when I broke my neck in the car? Yes, I do. I wasn't supposed to go anywhere. I was supposed to stay in bed and just stay still with my neck.

One does with a broken neck. With the neck brace. Well, the girl that I was seeing, she made me go see her. She made me drive to her. I'm like, I told my mom that. And she was just like, excuse me? No. She made me drive to see her. I mean, and I was so dumb at the time. Like I was so like, oh, I wanted to work. It's fine. I was. I was so dumb, I would get in my truck and I'd drive real slow the two miles down the road that she lived and I wouldn't think anything of it until afterwards I looked back on it and I'm like, oh, I'm an idiot. And the farther you get out of the relationship, the more those, speaking for myself, the more of those things kind of pop up and I'm like, how the hell did I not see that?

That was literally punching me in the face, not staring me in the face, punching me in the face. And I was like, it's fine. This is good. Yeah. What? No, I think God is working in your favor. I mean, I think it happened because it should have happened.

And now you're moving forward to the relationship I was in before Cassie. She also had a nightmare of a mother. Hated me. Carly, she hated me. No one hates me. She needed a girl. You always hated me for bringing the subject up. No, I didn't.

No, I didn't. I will speak to this, though. I vividly remember walking around feeling like I needed to make this decision. And I, it's no secret. I am like very much a believer in Jesus and was like, God, how could you? I was like praying out loud. How could, how could I get married? I feel like divorce is so against what you've wanted. And I, I need to know that it's okay. And I cannot tell you from that moment to this day. I mean, and country music fans don't even know in the ways that they now are so vulnerable in sharing their story with me in the ways that just people in the

industry or people outside of the industry or random fans or random messages that I get like I see them all and it's crazy how much God has just affirmed me that it was the right decision. How is it affecting your music? Are you writing, are you past because you get into that phase? Do you do? You get into that phase where you write everything's sad and then you get into that phase where you're writing everything like forget you and then you get into that phase where you're happy again. I think this period in my life, you know, I lost Busby, my producer that I wrote Show Me Around about, and he was like family to me. We were very close and I was very close to his family. I still am. And then all of this with my relationship. So like this period of time for me has been

a lot of loss. Yeah. So I think probably there's just a lot of that going on in my music. But I'm also like I feel good. Yeah. You look like you feel good. I really do. Like I'm, I'm, I'm happier. Carly, it's okay. You're allowed to say it. It's okay to be happier than you were. It's okay. Everyone's going to be happy for you.

I feel lighter. Yeah. Yeah. You get it. Yes. We all get it. Yeah. It's a good.

It's good. People keep asking. They're like, how are you? I'm like, I'm good. Do you feel like it's still kind of like the tiptoeing around like eggshells like, how are you doing when people ask you? Or do you feel like they're... Well, I think the weird part,

the blessing is that I've been able to do this in a year where everybody's locked down. So I've been able to heal and, like, hide also. So I feel like right now is like the first time that I've been seeing people. And, you know, some people are like, is she good? She all right?

And it's like, yeah, I'm good. You've had a little bit of time. Yeah. Like, and not saying... But again, like, this was a lot of time for me of, like, before it went, You know, things go public much later than when you know. Oh, for sure.

No. Well, from a fan standpoint and from someone who I think is kind of your age-ish, I think we're around the same age, and from someone who has also been through, not a divorce, but an ended six-year relationship, I think that it makes me like you more. And I want to back that up. I don't want to sound heartless.

No, same. When you see the glam and the glitz and everything on Instagram, and the hustle and the bustle and everybody talks everything up, when you kind of see a more, I don't want to say realistic, but realistic version of a person that is going through exactly what I went through, it's almost like, oh, okay, we're all human. And it tracks me to not only you as a person, but also the music that you're coming out with,

all of a sudden that kind of hits you differently. Because you know that this isn't something that they got, She got in a room and just wrote it. But she's like, look how happy she is and this and that. Like she was just writing that as a fairy tale. It's like, no, she wrote this because she felt this. Oh. Tray.

Try and track. Yeah, girl, get it. So, I mean, I don't know if that will help or hurt or anything, but I just think that I remember when the headline came out. I remember the way I felt when I went through a big breakup and to add to the public on top of that, it was just like, oh, my gosh. But like we were saying before we started recording, what is it next girl yeah next girl it's like I can see oh yeah I remember that too yeah good luck

but I just feel like it's one of those things that maybe when you that you haven't been seeing people or you haven't been interacting with fans a reminder from a fan is that you're doing a okay and it's nice yeah it's a good feeling and I know that it's yes it's I mean yeah no laughing we're clapping we're clapping but I really I had to make a decision I had to go yeah are you going to act like it didn't happen or are you going to not lean into it but just be honest and be like, man, you know, and some people don't. And some people seem unaffected or whatever by things that happen in their life and me. I just can't do that.

But the fans notice that. People are just like, little blip. Nothing happened. We're still great. It's like that's not how real life works. Yeah. So I don't know. I can't speak for everybody.

I can speak for myself and my friends. And whoever I know that is your fan is that it's better to just own it. Face it and just part of your story. I can see it now. Next year. Oh, gosh. She's going to come shoot with the green berets. Oh my God.

And Scott Boshetta, my label president, he was like, I really want to show me around on this project, or like on this first batch. And so, that morning I was like, hey guys, like, this is something that you didn't write with me,

but Scott really wants it, can I just play you the demo? And so Shane was just like, yeah, let's start with that. Like, it'll set the tone, whatever. So we're in the studio and, like, there was one candle lit in front of us. And, you know, all those musicians knew him. And I didn't even think about that. I'll never forget, you know, it was like my first session without him. First session of like a new chapter in my life. And Shane, it got to the first chorus and Shane like I'm sure he doesn't care that I'm telling this but like he stood in the corner of the studio and sobbed like he couldn't because it was also affecting him he had lost his nanny to cancer and also just realizing like Busby what they like the magnitude of like me trusting

them as producers and it was like this moment that I'll never forget we were all just like sobbing and that candle it really felt like he was in the room oh my gosh that's sad but it's cool yeah it's You know, I think everybody experiences, there he is right now, he's like, don't forget about me, girl. That is crazy. But I just, music is so powerful and even just the stories of loss that I've been told in the last week of it, you know, coming out and everybody experiences that. People lose people. And for me, this is such like a sweet way of thinking of your loved ones that, you know, I've told this, but Barry Dean, who's an amazing songwriter, he gave a speech at Busby's funeral. Busby had three daughters under the age of 10 and his beautiful wife.

And Barry was like, they're, Busby's looking at heaven like Disneyland. And he was like he's looking for all the special parts to show each of his daughters and all of us when we get there. And I remember being like, whoa, that is such an awesome way of looking at death. Yeah. Wow. Well, yours more coming. So this is a new project. Yeah.

Did you kind of lead with this song then? I mean, I've led with Next Girl. Okay, Next Girl, then this song. Then this. And, you know, I can't say too much. I already know what's happening. I think, like, what's so great about Scott Borchetta, and it's probably because he worked with Taylor for so many years.

So he is, you know, I think. I'm going to release music that is representative of this last 18 months for me. Losing Busby, my divorce, my marriage, you know, all of those things. And that's coming sooner than later.
