Starting point is 00:00:00 I totally get if you don't want to build a personal brand, but you need to be having that within your business. People do buy from people, so even if you are building a brand, having some face to it can actually be very, very powerful. And if you can find those factors in your day on how to do that as a leader, it is going to be really, really beneficial. Welcome to the Boss Babe podcast, a place where we share with you the real behind the scenes of building successful businesses, achieving peak performance and learning how to balance it all. I'm Danielle Canty, President and Co-Founder of Boss Babe and today I am your host. Now this episode, I am really excited about this episode
Starting point is 00:00:46 and a little nervous because this is my first ever solo episode. So last week, Natalie came in and asked you guys for feedback on what you would like to hear more of on the Boss Babe episodes. And we had an overwhelming response that you guys would love for us to be doing more solos and interviewing each other, which I actually cannot wait to do. And so I'm really, really curious. I would love more feedback from you guys. So I'd love for you to send me a DM at Danielle Canty on things that you would like to hear us talk about, whether it's on our solos or whether it's joint. I know I'm really excited to sharing with you guys a little bit more about the behind the scenes of building Boss Babe as a brand, the highs, the lows, the challenges, the rollercoaster ride that is Boss Babe. I know that we've had some amazing, amazing guests come in and share that
Starting point is 00:01:33 area of expertise, but I'm really just excited to be sitting down with you guys, the cup of coffee, and sharing a few more of the things that we have going on here. I'm also excited to be sharing things like my journey to get into this point. I know lots of you are very familiar with Natalie, but maybe not so familiar with me. And my journey from being a chiropractor to being a co-founder of Boss Babe, my journey from leaving the UK to the US. I literally get immigration questions on the daily, which is just hilarious. So yeah, I'm really excited, but I would love also for you to message me and say like, hey, what do you want to know? Do you want to know more about my story? Do you want to know more about operations, systems, KPIs, my relationship with Natalie, all the things I would just love to
Starting point is 00:02:13 know. So send me a DM at Danielle Canty. I read them all myself and I would love to get in contact with you. So I'm really looking forward to that. Before we dive into this episode, I'm really, really excited to share something with you that Natalie and I have been working on behind the scenes. Because let's be honest, 2020 has been a year and it's really fundamentally changed the way that we will be doing business moving forward. And this means that so many strategies have had to change, like marketing angles, how you position stuff, and that can be so daunting and confusing. And that's why Natalie and I put our heads together and we really recognize that, well, hang on a minute. We want to be lifting the lid on the exact strategies that we have been using behind the
Starting point is 00:02:53 scenes to grow this year and into next year. And we want to be giving you the business blueprint and the roadmap to help you guys hit six figures in 2021, including our very sought after magic calculator. So you know all the numbers that you actually need to be hitting along the way, all those milestones that you need to be aiming for. So Nancy and I, when we started building Boss Babe, we're very much about sharing our secrets and not wanting to hold back from you guys. So this is another reason why I'm so, so excited to be doing this webinar, where we're going to be talking about our tried, tested, and easily repeatable formulas that we have used to scale, not only to six figures and beyond, but scale organically. So whether you are a total beginner and you haven't even firmed up your business idea yet, or whether you have a
Starting point is 00:03:42 business and you want to be growing it, we are really, really excited to invite you to this completely free training. It's called How to Make Six Figures in 2021. So if you want to know all of the proven strategies that we've been using behind the scenes here at Boss Babe and within the businesses of people that we mentor, we want to be able to share with you all the behind the scenes secrets and tricks, not only save you time, but also save you money. So if this sounds like something you want to learn, then do not miss out. And also I'm just going to put it out there. You don't have to be a marketing pro and a marketing guru to make six figures. You just need to know a framework and that's what we're going to be teaching you. So it's going to be so, so easy for you to digest and actually start implementing in your businesses. So if you want to sign up,
Starting point is 00:04:30 you don't want to miss out, you need to get a seat because we only have a limited number available and you need to head to bossbabe.com forward slash six figure 2021. So six is actually spelled like S-I-X figure 2021 and, and that's numerical, to reserve your seat, okay? Honestly, you guys know that the Boss Babe trainings are renowned for delivering content. Like we're not into all this fluffy stuff, right? So you're going into this training with a notepad and pen. You're ready to listen. You're ready to learn, and you're willing to take action straight afterwards, okay? So I want you to head to bossbabe.com forward slash six figure 2021 to reserve your seat because you're not going to want to miss this. And I'm really excited to see you there.
Starting point is 00:05:12 A boss babe is unapologetically ambitious and paves the way for herself and other women to rise, keep going and fighting on. She is on a mission to be her best self in all areas. It's just believing in yourself. Confidently stepping outside her comfort zone to create her own vision of success. And in the meantime, I'm going to sit back and really enjoy this episode. I've poured myself a coffee. We are going to be talking about the things that you need to know to build an audience. There are so many pieces to building an audience that There are so many pieces to building an audience that nobody is talking about and I'm really excited to be deep diving during this episode on that with you. So like I said I've poured myself a coffee. I'm also just going to
Starting point is 00:05:55 give you a little bit of an insight as I'm starting to share more of my life with you. It is a freshly ground high altitude organic coffee. So basically, just some little tidbits, basically if you buy instant coffee, a lot of people don't realize this, but because coffee's got a bit of a bad rep over the period of time, but coffee actually is really, really high in antioxidants as long as it is freshly ground. It actually loses that as soon as it's oxygenated. I'm no coffee connoisseur, but these are the pieces that I know and understand so i freshly ground it so that it is one retains its high antioxidants but also it doesn't have mold in it as well so a lot of these pre-packed ground coffees can have a lot of mold in so unless they're like specially curated so these are just some little tips and knowing this has really been
Starting point is 00:06:41 a game changer for me because i used to drink coffee and I now have a huge crash whereas now I can drink coffee without anxiety and without it upsetting my stomach. So there you go, a little bit about my setup right here. So if you hear me slurping away, it's because I'm enjoying my morning coffee. I've also popped on without coming on to Slack, emails, anything like that. I'm just coming straight to you first thing this morning and I'm really excited to chat further. So without further ado, let's dive in. Okay, so let's be real. A lot of you know a lot about Natalie's story. She was a born entrepreneur and she's grown up on Instagram. What this woman does not know about Instagram is not worth knowing quite honestly. And for me, my story is really, really different. I was not a born entrepreneur. I really didn't enter entrepreneurship until my 20s different I was not a born entrepreneur I was I really didn't enter entrepreneurship until my 20s I was a chiropractor and then I pivoted into being a
Starting point is 00:07:31 founder of Boss Babe and I'm sharing this with you because I did not grow up on Instagram I actually had a really really successful brick and mortar businesses in the UK which I had built via things like Yellow Pages, really good SEO in my area, maybe the odd Facebook ads targeting an area as well, but really had not dove into Instagram. And so I was super late to the Instagram game. And honestly, I was actually just, if you follow me on Instagram, I was sharing some pictures back from 2017 the other day, which were hilarious. Like I literally had no clue and I'm such a science girl. And what I didn't realize is there's actually a lot of formulaic instruction that you can do to build an audience and create content and starting to realize that has been a game changer. So during this podcast, I'm going to be sharing some of those foundational aspects that you need
Starting point is 00:08:24 to understand if you want to be creating good quality content that helps you build an audience. And I'm going to be right out the gate and be really honest with you guys. I have no problem with people not wanting to build a personal brand. Right from the very beginning, Natalie and I decided to divide and conquer. So I was building, I still have my businesses in UK. I was working part-time in Boss Babe and running those. And so my time was really scarce. And so I had to divide and conquer. Natalie really went into the Instagram game hard. And I was like, right, I'm going to be building all the backend systems, all the customer service, making sure the tech's running properly, all the operations of the business. And so we made that sacrifice really early on, but what we didn't sacrifice
Starting point is 00:09:03 was the brand's presence. And so for anyone listening, I totally get if you don't want to build a personal brand and there might not be that time and reward for you, but you need to be having that within your business. And I am going to level with you and say, people do buy from people. So even if you are building a brand, having some face to it can actually be very, very powerful. And if you can find those factors in your day on how to do that as a leader, it is going actually be very, very powerful. And if you can find those factors in your day on how to do that as a leader, it is going to be really, really beneficial. But I'm sharing this right out of the gate because one thing, because I didn't start
Starting point is 00:09:34 building my Instagram right from the get-go and we were doing a lot more with Boss Babes, when it came to starting to post myself and outside of the comfort blanket of Boss Babe, I really suffered from a lot of post paralysis so I don't know and for you guys listening have felt this the same way but where you literally go to post you're like what on earth do I write about what do people know like no one cares about this stuff just like talking and it's tumbleweed going past and I look stupid what people think about me and yeah just all these like stories that I was telling myself and this can be really really powerful and paralyzing for
Starting point is 00:10:13 so many people and I got in this habit of feeling like what I said on Instagram needed to be different to what I would say in real life. It was almost like it wasn't really normal conversations. And so for me, that was actually one of the biggest hurdles was actually realizing, oh, I don't need to be anybody different on social media than I am in my real life. If I think about what I write, I just need to think about what I would talk to my girlfriends about, what I would talk to my family about, what I would talk to my girlfriends about what I talk to my family about what I talk to my friends about have those conversations on social media let's take a quick pause to talk about my new favorite all-in-one platform Kajabi you know I've been singing their praises lately because they have helped our business run so much smoother and
Starting point is 00:10:59 with way less complexity which I love not to mention our team couldn't be happier because now everything is in one place so it makes collecting data, creating pages, collecting payment, all the things so much simpler. One of our mottos at Boss Babe is simplify to amplify and Kajabi has really helped us do that this year. So of course I needed to share it here with you. It's the perfect time of year to do a bit of spring cleaning in your business you know, get rid of the complexity and instead really focus on getting organized and making things as smooth as possible. I definitely recommend Kajabi to all of my clients and students. So if you're listening and haven't checked out Kajabi yet, now is the perfect time to do so because they are offering Boss Babe listeners a 30-day free trial go to kajabi.com
Starting point is 00:11:46 slash boss babe to claim your 30-day free trial that's kajabi.com slash boss babe so first and foremost that was actually one of the big hurdles for me was that oh i can be normal i can be myself i can be just treat it as if okay i'm gonna have a glass of wine with a friend what are some things i'm gonna share with her for my week what are some of those things I'm gonna be like oh yeah let's chat about this let's have this conversation and treat it more like a conversation than a TEDx talk and starting to reframe my mindset around that was really powerful so I just wanted to share that brief intro because I know that lots of you are going to relate to that oh my goodness I just don't know what to write ever and sometimes that's a real powerful game changer when you're just like, oh, okay,
Starting point is 00:12:28 yeah, that makes it so much easier. What are the things I would talk about on a daily basis? However, I also want to share that whilst there is that conversation piece, it's also really important to realize that when you're creating content, there's actually a framework to creating powerful content. And this was something that I am a science girl. I like frameworks. I like formulas. That's how I like make sense of a lot of things. When you're just giving me, again, it comes with a blank piece of paper, we're just like full, full autonomy to go off and create anything. I feel a little bit intimidated by that. So when I start looking by going, okay, well, what do I look at other people's? What do I see that we're doing well on Boss Babe? What do I see well that other
Starting point is 00:13:09 influencers are doing? What do I see well that other content creators are doing or other brands are doing? I very quickly realized that there was a formula that they were applying that was allowing their content to either go viral or to get really, really good engagement. Because let's be honest, you can do viral content, which is amazing. But one of the things that we always talk about in Boss Babe is that it's around, you want your followers to be full of ideal clients, right? So if you are selling, I don't know, let's say you are selling, let's just say women's toiletries, right? Well, it's not really going to help you if you've got a ton of male followers, they're not your ideal clients, they're not going to be buying those things. And so when you create content, you have to bear that ideal client in mind. And
Starting point is 00:13:54 sometimes that might be going, okay, I'm going to go for viral content. But actually, a lot of the time, it's going to be, okay, I want to get actual potential customers in my funnel to actually allow them to buy from me in the long term. So anyway, what I was saying was that I really realized that there was a formula to this. And if I could start understanding this formula, I would be able to apply it better. So I want to share with you the first thing I noticed, and this is the Boss Babe Influence Formula. So this is the boss babe influence formula so this is a formula to growing infants and one thing I've really noticed is that people don't realize what actually influence is so if we were to take a definition of influence so influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character development or behavior of someone or something or the effect itself, right? So that's the definition.
Starting point is 00:14:46 And people just think nowadays, you know, we call influencers on Instagram, etc. Oh, influence is literally just online. That's absolute rubbish. Every single one of you listening to this is actually influential. Each of you has the ability to influence someone every single day. Each of you has the ability to influence someone positively every single day. And the realization that actually, if you're able to tell somebody something, whether it's in person, in an office setting, on online setting, wherever that is, if you're actually able to positively have, or actually any effect, we want it to be positive but if you are able to have an effect on someone in their behaviors you are influencing them and I can guarantee all of you have that power and you do it on a daily basis but what I'm going to be teaching you in this episode is really how to harness that power and utilize it so boss babe influence Boss Babe influence formula is just like a normal formula and it's based on value plus consistency
Starting point is 00:15:47 times by reach and that gives you influence. So let me break that down a little bit for you. So value is the need that you are fulfilling. So whenever we want to be influencing anybody, we want to be bringing value to that conversation, whether it's in person or whether it's online, right? So the need that you are fulfilling on a daily basis. Consistency is you show up with the same values regularly. So when people start to associate with you with these values, they know what to expect. They'll come back for more. So let's just take it in an office setting, right? We all have careers, we're all working, whether it's for ourselves, within our own teams or in a job. You are known for something in that role because you bring a certain value to that role consistently every
Starting point is 00:16:36 single day. So therefore, when people ask you something, you're able to influence them because they are expecting a certain value from you because you've delivered that time and time again okay so that's got two brackets around it so value plus consistency in fact I'm going to put this in the show notes so value plus consistency then you're going to times that by reach so really what creates a bigger impact and influence is the more people that you get that in front of, all right? So the more people you share that with on a consistent basis. So let's say if I was sharing it in around a boardroom, maybe with 12 people, I'm just influencing those 12 people in that room at that time.
Starting point is 00:17:17 But let's say I share that online, my reach and my capacity to reach more people exponentially increases. Okay, so I just wanted to interrupt this episode for a hot minute just to let you know about our fantastic sponsors, Skillshare. So B for Boss Babe, B for Boss Babe and P for Premier. And you're going to get a free trial of a premium membership. And we're back. Let's jump back into today's episode. So that's what I really like, you know, from the beginning of this, you think, okay, I have to be somebody else online to who I'm in person. An influencer is somebody who I'm not yet, and I'm becoming an influencer, whereas that is actually totally untrue. You're already an influencer. It's just how you reach more people with the value and the consistency that you already bring,
Starting point is 00:20:00 okay? Does that make sense? And I would love for you to like tag me if you're having any breakthroughs on this, be like, oh my God, Yes. This makes so much sense. Like I influence people all the time in my daily life. And I've been feeling like I need to be somebody else online and do things completely differently. Whereas I really don't, I just need to talk and share those values on a consistent basis. And the reason I say sharing the values on a consistent basis is so that people know what to expect because that is what a brand is built on. So as a personal brand or a business brand, people with brands, if you turn it into a brand, you want to know exactly what to expect every time you go there, okay?
Starting point is 00:20:35 And that's why I talk about the value and the consistency piece. If you keep changing your values over and over again, it's going to be really, really confusing to your potential customers, those who are in your circles, and for those people to be actually influenced by you because they don't really understand you or your brand and when I say you or your brand I mean as a business brand or as a personal brand so that's why I really want you to be picking and we're going to be doing that throughout this episode I really want you to be picking things that are like oh yeah no I absolutely need to be staying with those values and speak consistently about it. And that's actually one mistake I see a lot of people making is they feel like they keep saying the same thing over and over again on social as if that's a bad thing,
Starting point is 00:21:12 but it's really not. Think about people that you follow for fitness, right? You follow them because you know what you're going to get. You know what the type of workouts you're going to get. You know what the type of food that they're going to talk about eating and that, oh yeah, that's consistent and feels familiar. So I really want you to get out of the habit of feeling like you have to talk about different things all the time it's not about that it's about being consistent and showing up regularly with the things that are truly at you and your brand's core so that's the boss babe formula which we've really like built on and one of the things that I wanted to share on this podcast was talking about values in more detail because the challenge that I see with a lot of people is that they're not really
Starting point is 00:21:51 understanding what values are and how to break that down and how to leverage them and like I said there's so many people who actually do this but they don't know how to articulate it or how to teach it and that's why I was like right we a formula. We need these values and we need to show people how to create them so it's less intimidating. So I'm going to teach you about the four E's. Remember earlier I said around how I really, really suffered from writer's block. This is all in post paralysis. This is actually what got me to overcome it because I gave myself a framework to work in. And that's what I really want to give you guys today.
Starting point is 00:22:25 So the four E's to creating content that is valuable. Okay, so whenever you're creating content, I want you to think of these pieces. That's content should be, well, I'm going to say this again. Content should be one of these four things each time. The more you add into one piece of content, the more E's you can get in one piece of content, normally the better it performs. But every single piece of content should have at least one of these E's. So the first E is emotion. The second E is education. The third E is entertainment. And the fourth E is enemy. Okay. So I'm going to break these down. So emotion, when you create content,
Starting point is 00:23:07 you really need to be asking yourself, how do you want people to feel when they come into contact with you and your content? So do you want them to feel positive? Do you want them to feel inspired? Do you want them to feel motivated? Do you want them to feel guilty? Do you want them to feel like, what is it that you want them to feel like? Oh, I read that piece of content. It was really uplifting. Or I read that piece of content and wow, I felt like so much motivation to go and do that thing. So what are the key emotional points? Do you want them to feel understood? That's another way. Okay. So what do you want them to feel? Sometimes an emotion might be like, it might be funny, like it might make them laugh. So what is it that you want them to feel when they come in contact with your content? So first of all, when you're writing down anything, you want to write something and
Starting point is 00:23:54 like, okay, like how do I want my audience to feel when they've read this? Okay, I want them to feel inspired. So what are the inspiring things that maybe I could share this week? Or I want them to feel understood because I know that 2020 has been really hard and I want them to feel like I get it too like it's been hard for me as well so those emotions you want to provoke throughout your content the next one is education so what do you want them to learn from you now every single post might not be an educational content it might just be okay well I just want to share this emotional piece with them today I want to relate to them on today whereas the next day it might be okay I want to teach them something and so whether you have a personal brand or a service so let's say you might be a branding agent agency and you
Starting point is 00:24:34 want to teach people about like the different color palettes or something that go together or don't so that's an educational piece or you might have a women's razor company you might have a product right and if you have a product you might be like well what kind of content can I create that's going to be educational in this realm well you could be like well actually I'm going to teach and why we create sustainable razors and why that's important the same reason is like okay this is a predominantly female podcast so it might be around tampons and okay well I want to teach the benefits of organic tampons and organic cotton so what is it that you want to teach people so no matter if you have a
Starting point is 00:25:10 product or you have a agency or service-based business there's always educational pieces that you can loop in that content now you might want to do a double whammy and go okay well I'm going to teach this educational content I'm going to I want to make sure that by teaching this educational content I'm creating an emotion behind it so I might be wanting to talk about sustainability so I might have a clothing brand that is based on sustainability fabrics I want to be educating people on the importance of sustainable fabrics because of what's happening to our planet and that's going to elicit this type of emotion with them so can you start to see how I'm like stacking the ears to actually create the content so the third one which actually can be probably the trickiest to do and this is when you can get a lot of viral content very easily is entertainment so how you engage them and why will they come back for more? So really a lot of
Starting point is 00:26:07 reels are very, very entertaining right now. You've really, really seen that. And Natsi spoke about that in her last podcast about sharing like the importance of creating reels right now and how to do that. And it doesn't have to be intimidating. And we're actually covering that in the content masterclass in our AGA because we know that reels is really really important to be talking about. So how can you entertain people and really just noticing that nowadays people's attention span is so so short so you don't want to be on a short form platform like Instagram starting any of your reels or starting any of your IGTVs or starting any of your captions with long drawn out introductions. You want them to be short, sharp and to the point to entertain
Starting point is 00:26:53 people and hook them in as quickly as possible. Let's say you're going into creating viral videos, then there's lots of aspects that you need to be including within that, which again is what we talk about in YGA. And if you've not already done the training that Natalie's mentor did with us, then go and check that out. I'll make sure there's a link for it in the show notes, but go and check that YGA training out, because that really talks about how you hook people into videos and how you start videos off and how you talk about the videos throughout. So really just thinking about what is the entertainment element, not only capture the attention right at the beginning, no matter what type of content is, but how to keep them. And there are specific formulas that you can build that on. The last A is enemy. So this one, I felt like nobody really
Starting point is 00:27:35 talks about at all. And it's like really forgotten about, but it's so, so powerful. So a lot of people unite when they have a common enemy and that doesn't need to be a person so I'm not saying okay you need to like call somebody out to create an enemy but it can be a thing right so it might be you know we talk about a lot so far in sustainability so the enemy might be plastic right so you unite people on this okay well buy our stuff because we don't use plastic. We don't wrap in plastic, X, Y, and Z. Therefore you're getting the educational piece around the planet and saving it, but the enemy is the plastic, right? So what can you bring people? What does your company or your personal brand stand against? So at Boss Babe, we stand against the statistics that, hang on a minute, why are only 18% of women
Starting point is 00:28:26 actually going on to build six-figure businesses? And why are 2% only actually going on to build seven? We want to stand against that statistic and we want to change that statistic. Another statistic we stand against is about how much more investment goes to men. Yet female businesses, so much more have been proven to be way more successful. When there is a woman who is in a leadership position of a company, there are research showing it's going to be more successful. So we stand against those statistics. So what can you as a personal brand stand against, but also what can your company stand against as well? So when you can unite over that,'s really powerful so when you start seeing so these four e's emotion education entertainment enemy every single piece of content should have that in so when i started going okay what am i
Starting point is 00:29:14 going to write about okay i really want to go into an educational piece today actually i want to tie that in with this about the enemy because i think that's going to be a really good combination so i'm not saying you have to pick one or t'other when talking about these four E's. The actual most powerful bit, and as you get better at writing, is when you can stack them all on top of each other to create really, really powerful content. So I wanted to share this with you today because, like I said, I've actually found it really difficult to just start a scratch. So I was like, okay, well, if I share the formulas that I've noticed how people build content, if I reassure you all that you are all influencers in a capacity already, hopefully this will allow you to see that you can transfer that online and gain more reach.
Starting point is 00:29:57 So I really, really hope this was helpful. I would love for you to share with me some of your takeaways and maybe even share some posts that this has inspired you to write or a reel that has inspired you to do or a piece of content that you've been holding back on. And maybe you want to be sharing more emotional content or educational content or entertaining content or resharing. Actually, yeah, I do have that enemy as well. So I would really, really love for you to share your favorite takeaways from this episode and also like I said right at the beginning let me know what you would love me for me to speak on further I'm really excited to be doing Natalie and I are going to do some interviews of each other and like I said just sharing a bit more behind the scenes so we're really excited about that but any content and topic ideas is always really really powerful obviously I've got lots
Starting point is 00:30:43 from the formula but I also just want to be making sure we do this podcast for you guys. Boss Babe is not the Natalie and Danielle show. It's literally about the community. And so we're really dedicated to bringing you free value added content as well that allows you to go, oh yeah, like I actually understood this and this is really, really powerful and makes complete and utter sense to me. So message some of those pieces that you want.
