Starting point is 00:00:00 I think that so much comes from really getting specific as to not just where you want to go but where you've been. So I would keep your personal and your business one separate. I wouldn't try and merge the two. They very much can be separate. A bit of a reminder for me was like yeah have more fun like do things don't worry so much. Welcome to the Boss Babe podcast a place where we share with you the real behind the scenes of building successful businesses, achieving big performance and learning how to bounce it off. It's me Danielle Canty co-founder and current president of Boss Babe and I'm your host for this week's episode. Now I'm totally laughing to myself here because I just said current and it's really funny because I had the team visiting this last week and we were reflecting on how many roles I've literally had in Boss Babe. It's hilarious. I don't know if
Starting point is 00:00:55 any of you guys feel like this who have businesses where you've literally done every single role under the sun. Whether it's been customer service, community management, I've been a coach, I've been CBO, I've been all the things and so it's just really funny how in the corporate world you might just have like one job at a time but I feel when you're entrepreneur you just kind of like roll your sleeves up and get on with it so I pretty much think I've sat in every seat bar the social media manager probably I think that's kind of the one that's not science but it's always funny when you start reflecting and just think of the absolute roller coaster that entrepreneurial life gives you you know it's the ups it's the downs it's like exhilarating one minute it's scary the next but do you know what I really wouldn't change it for the world so if you're feeling like that too
Starting point is 00:01:41 I get it if you're feeling that roller coaster, whether you're on the high, whether you're on your low, I get it. I feel you and just know you are 100% not alone. Anyway, I digress. So I want to just start this episode by saying I'm super excited for doing my second solo episode. I really enjoy getting all of the DMs afterwards and just chatting with you guys on Instagram, like hearing your takeaways, hearing your learnings, like all the things. So if you do have any feedback after this episode, please tag me at Danielle Canty and also send me not only your favorite takeaways, but also the
Starting point is 00:02:14 things that you would like to hear me talk about. Because I am a little bit shyer, as I say, I'm like bang on an ambivert. If you didn't know this about about me I'm like 56% extrovert on Myers-Briggs but I'm a total ambivert so I actually find it really challenging to kind of like come on here and share bits of my life but I'm getting used to it I'm trying and I know when I share my vulnerabilities it gives you guys it's like really helpful and it gives you guys a lot of strength so I'm really dedicated to continuing to do that and Natalie and I actually have a real intention of doing more duos too where we're going to be sharing way more behind the scenes. It'll probably be like listening to two sisters talk with a glass of wine. Like I feel like we should all have like when Natalie
Starting point is 00:02:51 and I do our duos, we have wine, you guys have wine. That's the way we do it. Hey, it's Danielle. And I'm so excited to say that this episode is brought to you by our membership community, The Society. Now, The Society is one of my favorite places and it's the place for female entrepreneurs to connect, build and grow. We are here to inspire, support and celebrate you every single step of the way. And you'll also get two live group coaching calls every single month, which are normally with yourself truly, and you'll always feel supported and get those questions answered. In fact, on our goal setting one,

We actually have a wait list right now, but we have a secret backdoor entry for all of our podcast listeners because we love you guys so much. I'm really excited, like I said, to do this episode today. And I'm going to be really sharing with you my tried and tested and proven methods to setting goals. So one thing, you know, as we're talking about personality, that's one part of my personality is I love setting goals. I really like to know where I'm heading and that north star and I'm totally open to that changing at times but it really grounds me
Starting point is 00:05:09 and gives me a sense of where I want to go and what actions that I need to do to get there and so I'm such a big fan like I've always done like goal setting for several years way before I was even an entrepreneur and it's actually something that I've really, really perfected. And so I really am looking forward to sharing a little system with you guys today. But before I do, I just wanted to invite you to a really, really special training that we are actually running because we really recognize that, let's be honest, 2020 has thrown a lot at us and we want to give you some extra support you know we want to help you guys kind of like there's so much content out there right now and we want to help you guys understand where you are going to go and how you're going to make six figures in 2020 even
Starting point is 00:05:59 if you're a new business so this is a training for entrepreneurs or those who want to like develop their side hustle or even want to start for side hustle or those of you who already have a side hustle but want to be growing it to six figures. It's going to be literally epic training and for those of you who have not been on any of our trainings before, you know that we're the type of gals that do no fluff and no BS, like literally. We give you information, you want to come with paper and pen because you're going to be writing so so many notes. So if, we give you information. You want to come with paper and pen because you're going to be writing so, so many notes. So if this sounds like you, if you are somebody who wants to be making six figures into 2021 and beyond, you are not going to want to miss this. So the link
Starting point is 00:06:36 is actually in the description of this episode. So just go there and register. And we only have limited spaces available. So you are going to want to register so that you can attend okay so just pause this go straight to the link in the description sign up and then you can join me back here so that I can share all my wisdom with you about how to get yourself set up for an epic 2021. Okay guys so I want to start this episode by firstly getting real like I feel that we're all friends here. So we should just be really honest. Let's get straight to the point. And let's just declare that 2020 has been a little bit of a shit show, shall we? You know, I felt like we're all good friends that we can swear on this podcast. Because whilst on one hand, there have been so many lessons learned, we've really like tuned in
Starting point is 00:07:24 to like what's important to us. We've got to spend more time with our families. There has been the other side of this, which has been truly exhausting, like seriously. And I feel like I could come at you all positive and be like all the things that I learned in 2020, you know, I'm stronger for it. And while some of those things will be true,
Starting point is 00:07:43 it also does not take away from the fact that I am exhausted and I'm genuinely fantasizing about lying on a sunbed and doing nothing very very soon like I feel like if my husband could dangle grapes into my mouth whilst I was chilled on a sunbed having not moved for two weeks I would be happy so I'm wondering if anyone else is feeling that and I'm really one thing I always pledged when I started social media um started because yeah I was late to the game when I started social media I said I didn't want things to just be the highlight reel I didn't want people to think that it was always perfect and while sometimes it's challenging to get over some of these pieces in social media and I do my
Starting point is 00:08:24 best to share things podcast really is a place where Natalie and I get to be so vulnerable and you know give you guys a real taste into like what does happen and so that's my declaration at the start of this podcast I acknowledge that 2020 has been one of the hardest years of my life having moved to the states in February to get shut down in March and it just being a roller coaster ride like you know when you guys know like when we moved here we were living in Stephen because we hadn't like been able to find a place we were in the UK and then we got shut down with them which actually was a blessing but then to like have my husband over here waiting for all of his licenses in fact there should be a whole immigration podcast. I'll definitely do that around the whole story. But I think it's just really important just to share
Starting point is 00:09:09 with people that whilst 2020 has been good, it's also been really hard. And let's just acknowledge that we are all here for a rest. So I wanted to walk with you today. And let's be honest, we would like 2021 to have a little bit more of a different vibe to it hey so I am really excited to share with you like I said my proven methods of how to become intentional about what you're going to create in 2021 and how to set those goals because I really feel like my goals in 2020 got swept away from me and it was very reactive and I'm ready to kind of ground myself heading into 2021 and I'm sure you guys are feeling the same. So I'm going to share with you the goal setting ritual that I do every year and I literally swear by it. And when I was going
Starting point is 00:09:57 through this thinking around, okay, how can I teach this and make it super digestible? I came up with the 5R process. So 5R's, this is going to be so easy for you guys to remember. They stand for review, reflect, refine, results, and remind. So I would love for you to write these down. And if you are not listening with a paper and pen, go and grab on right now. If you're in the car, then just take mental notes and just remember to listen on this, listen to this again, and then you can like update everything update everything but the five r's and I want to walk these through with you because I think that so much comes from really getting specific as to not just where you want to go but where you've been and that's why those first r's start with review and reflect so let me walk you
Starting point is 00:10:41 through them so first of all review now I would really love for you at this point and you can do this after so take some notes and you can do this fully afterwards on your own and probably give yourself like a good hour two hours to do this but objectively look at what you have a tangibly achieved in 2020 so what are things that you have like not feelings these are things that you have tangibly achieved in 2020. So they're going to be big things, they're going to be small things. And as you're going through this, you're like, oh my goodness, I forgot that was this year. It feels like 20 years ago because 2020 has been, you know, feeling long. So just go through these. And I would really recommend,
Starting point is 00:11:18 I always do this when I start at the top of the month. So I start in January, I'm like, okay, what did I achieve in January? And likely I'm going to try and remember a few of these things but then I go and get my calendar out so I use everything on a Gmail calendar so I go through there and just look at the key things I also because we're Asana freaks over at Boss Babe we have Asanas for each quarter so I'll go and look through there because I don't want to forget anything it's really really important because I think sometimes we actually forget how much we achieve and quite often it's a boss babe trait not to really celebrate yourself. So, you know, just going over it and just making sure you've got every single thing and you'll be surprised at how long that list is. Also, it's actually a really nice pat on the back when you look at this list in front of you and go, holy smokes, look how much I've achieved in this year.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Right. So that's the first one that I would love for you to do is review and make sure you get everything. And I'm not talking, like I said, like five things. Like I expect at least 20 things to be on there and they don't have to be business orientated. They can be personal orientated. Like you can bet moving to America is going to be a one of mine, right? So just think about those things that you've really achieved. The next R is reflect. So how do you feel the year has been? So this is like your feelings, like how do you feel you have shown up? Like how do you feel about this? What things have been positive? What things have been negative? What did you love about it? What have you done in the year that's not necessarily tangible but has really lit you up? Because what I find is sometimes it's not what you think has lit you up
Starting point is 00:12:47 like don't get me wrong I am like totally motivated by revenue and financial goals but if I look back on my year and if I look at those tangible things that we listed in review and I reflect on how I feel about those things in there some of the key things are not actually going to have been financial they're going to be things like the L partnership to me was like a dream come true like I literally read our magazine growing up so for us to have an L partnership was just like wow the same thing of like speaking at Brendan Bouchard's marketing influencer summit recently and we just released a podcast that was like a wild moment for me because Natalie and I met at a Brendon Burchard event. Never in a million years did I think, you know, when I went there in 2017, that I would then know him and be
Starting point is 00:13:34 invited to speak on his podcast. So those things that not necessarily like real tangible revenue goals have come from, but they lit me up inside. So what is it that you've done? And like I said, some of these things are going to be business orientated some of them are going to be family orientated some they're going to be personal orientated like the list goes on but really just like think about what has how do I say it like what's like really really kept you going in 2020 and what do you realize the importance is because I get people to do this because I think sometimes we can get caught up in the tangible aspects of setting goals and we can go into the materialistic things of 2021 but actually when we think about how 2020 has affected us a lot of those
Starting point is 00:14:18 learnings to come from that are going to be in our behaviors it's going to be find it we're going to be happier in 2021 if we find out what are the things that we did in 2020 that did make us happy or made us sad. So how can we do more of the happy things? How we can do less of the sad things? So really reflecting because if you're not reflecting, you're not learning and then you can't change anything. So that's why I think the review and the reflection piece are so, so important. And that really leads into the refine, right? So like I've kind of alluded to, when you review and look at it tangibly, when you reflect on those tangible things that you have created and generated and how you feel about them and, you know, what you've loved and what you've enjoyed, then you go to refine. That's really where you're like, okay,
Starting point is 00:15:00 how can I pull from those pieces and decide what I'm going to take in to 2021 and what I'm going to leave behind. So some of those goals might be, okay, I'm going to set these revenue goals. I'm going to set this goal to move house. I'm going to set this goal to help my health. That's actually one good thing for me. So if I say, and I give you examples, hoping this is going to really help you guys. Let's take a quick pause to talk about my new favorite all-in-one platform, Kajabi. You know I've been singing their praises lately because they have helped our business run so much smoother and with way less complexity, which I love. Not to mention our team couldn't be happier because now everything is in one place, so it makes collecting data, creating pages, collecting payment, all the things so much simpler. One of our mottos at Boss Babe is
Starting point is 00:15:45 simplify to amplify and Kajabi has really helped us do that this year. So of course I needed to share it here with you. It's the perfect time of year to do a bit of spring cleaning in your business, you know, get rid of the complexity and instead really focus on getting organized and making things as smooth as possible. I definitely recommend Kajabi to all of my clients and students. So if I say like review, you know, I'm really, really proud of myself that I started, you know, lifting weight three four times
Starting point is 00:18:45 a week right and I reflect on that and that's actually made me feel so much more confident in myself and comfortable and if I refine that I'm like okay well actually I want to increase some three times two four times next year because I realize the benefit of it and I actually also realize that training in the morning suits me way better than training in the evening so I can add on this when I'm refining so I'm starting to get a really really clear picture of my goals for 2021. Another learning that I want to refine is my role at Boss Babe. I really want to be you know I'm definitely the person who would jump into all the fires, jump into any team member who needs that support I very much find it easy to be a jack of all trades and I always kind of like talk about like a heptathlete like I can do a lot
Starting point is 00:19:32 of things really really well and so as I move into the next chapter of my career I want to be doing fewer things but those things better and so I recently just started compiling a document which says you know how to work with me and in there it says like things that I like well it says things about personality etc but it also says things that I like doing and that I want to continue doing and things that people don't need to ask me for and they should be going to somebody else number one it's really therapeutic but secondly it is a way to refine my learnings from 2020 take them into 2021 so I can create a role which is better than I had this year so I hope that's kind of like grounding this for
Starting point is 00:20:15 you and understanding how this works I also did a reflection on what some of you might be like okay well you know looking back I achieved these things this made me feel sad so how can I learn from it maybe it's you were doing certain roles in business or maybe you actually needed more support at home and there might be hires that you need to make there like what are those things that again you want to plant a flag into 2021 and say right by March I'm going to hire that home support even by end of January I'm going to be hiring that home support because that means it's going to have a knock-on effect into the rest of the year on helping me achieve these other goals so really just thinking around what do you want to learn and take with you and what do you want to learn from and change heading into next year so those three so far review reflect refine
Starting point is 00:21:00 number four results so like I said I am a big believer if you don't create tangible goals, it's very easy to get pulled in various directions, right? So when I have a goal planted and I know exactly where I'm going, it becomes very easy for me to understand what I need to say yes to and what I need to say no to. Because when you are growing a business or growing your career whatever that looks like there are always going to be distractions whether it's someone giving you another opportunity whether it's like something happening elsewhere and when you know what your goal is you can kind of put it through this filter around okay is this serving me in creating that goal like is that serving me in making this happen? And I really like to
Starting point is 00:21:47 break down my goals into personal development goals. So things like okay who do I want to be next year? How do I want to show up? You know how do I want people to describe me behind their back? Three words right? So those kind of things. What books do I want to read? How do I want to show up on a daily basis? I then go on to experiential and materialistic goals. So these are like experiences that I want to have in my life. So it might be holidays, it might be time with family, it might be going on like certain trips, it might be speaking places. And then materialistic being like, okay, well, maybe I want a new car, maybe I want a house, maybe I want like, like you know some of those things that money can buy and so what do those look like lastly I do
Starting point is 00:22:31 financial goals so financial goals being like okay how much do I want to earn how much do I want to save what am I saving for what planning do I want to do what investing do I want to do all of these things and it might be for you do you want to get out of debt do you want to like buy a save for buying a house like really just thinking about what that looks like because if you're like right I want to save x by the end of the year you need to have that broken down monthly to be able to achieve that so I know that setting goals can seem a little bit overwhelming but if you use these three places as kind of like you know ways to steer you so the personal development the experiential materialistic is one and then the financial and you have at least five goals three to five goals and to each one that actually gives
Starting point is 00:23:16 you a really good strong path heading into 2021 also just as a little side note, those of you who are already in the society will know that Natalie and I actually released a success kit all about doing an executive review. And within that, I actually added in a 30-35 minute guided five-year vision planning. So it was where I basically got you to set your five-year vision, breaking them into these three areas. And I did it with you. So I was literally reading out questions and prompting at the time. The whole idea was that you just wrote, you didn't necessarily think about things. You just wrote down what was ever coming up in that moment and just continued. So if you are a society member, go and check that out. And there's also how to break this down into
Starting point is 00:24:03 one year. And I've kind of done a little bit of a quarterly plan for you for the whole of 2021 in each of these areas so this is going to really really help and just a little side note if you are not in the society which you really should be because it is literally amazing it's like the best place for female entrepreneurs on the internet and other ambitious women but if you want to be i'm going to put a link for a little backdoor access because we're currently closed right now but you can get in there i'm going to put a link in the description so that you can join because it's just 35 a month right now so you're going to want to go in before the prices increase and you can get such amazing support just ask anyone who's been there or anyway just go to the link this is not about the society but i just wanted
Starting point is 00:24:44 you guys to know that because it really is epic and there are some extra tools in there if you're really getting into this goal setting malarkey okay so just while I'm on this those are my personal ones that I break it down into as a side note I also create specific business ones so with myself and Natalie we always sit down together and set our goals and intentions for 2021. And then we break them down into quarters too. So we say the results that we want to achieve in 2021. And then we map it out fully as regards to what launches that looks like, what products that looks like, and how all of that breaks down. So I would keep your personal and your business ones separate because I would never do my business goals without Natalie whereas I obviously do my personal ones without her so
Starting point is 00:25:28 just really think about that I wouldn't try and merge the two they very much can be separate so the last R is remind so it's really really easy to create these goals you have good intentions rounding out this year heading into next year you get into next year. You get into next year, you get to March and you're like, oh, I can't even remember what goals I set, right? And the whole point of doing this exercise is so that you can learn and make next year better than this year and that we have that lens to put decisions through, right? So just like I was speaking about, then it's going to be way easier for you not to get distracted because you're going to be able to look at your goals and be like, yeah, okay, this is okay this is great idea absolutely not like that does not align with where I want to go to by the end of the year and when you do that you have way more success in actually hitting those goals all right
Starting point is 00:26:14 like you exponentially increase your chance of achieving things if not only you write them down but you also look at them regularly so there's a couple of ways to do this that I like to do and I'm going to give you some creative things that you can do whichever suits you. So I do a few things. I first of all write mine down. So like I said I do like the five-year version. I write those down. I break it into one and then I will have those written down on my laptop and I will print them out. I will also for my personal ones, write something in my journal and I read it before I go to bed at least once a week, if not several times a week. All right. So I'm always really refreshing what I added in there and what I want to achieve. Outside of that, I'm a visual person and I like to be reminded of my things. So I also I'm going to give you loads and loads of tricks there.
Starting point is 00:27:04 I also pop like on my phone I change my wallpaper to be a little bit of a vision board so I would do that and I sometimes have a different one to my screensaver to my wallpaper so I kind of get two lots of visions in the other thing I do and I'm just going to like throw all these little tips at you because I just know that one of them either if not all of them at least one of them you're going to really resonate with another one I do is you know those three words I said earlier so particularly if I want to I just know that one of them either, if not all of them, at least one of them you're going to really resonate with. Another one I do is, you know, those three words I said earlier. So particularly if I want to pick three words, how I'd love people to describe me behind my back or three words I feel like I need to show up with to help me achieve my goals. So let's say I'm building a business, then I want to show up as unapologetically ambitious.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Like I just want to be, you know, bold and call that. And so I might put a reminder on my phone it flashes up every day with what as one of the words along with it might be okay I really really want to be bringing more love into my life whether it's my partner or my friends so loving and also I want to have more fun I want to enjoy things and be a little bit more light-hearted so at noon every day I have flash up on my phone unapologetically ambitious loving and fun and it's a reminder of the promise I make to myself at the beginning of the year I actually do this quarterly by the way and I change them depending but let's just start the beginning of the year they flash up on phone and I'm like oh yeah like am I being
Starting point is 00:28:19 fun today am I taking life too seriously today yeah I probably am okay it's a good reminder just to kind of take things on the channel a little bit more because let's face it like I would love people to describe me as funny in fact I looked at a post the other day and Natalie did describe me as funny which was over the moon about but sometimes we forget to have fun sometimes we just get caught up in the monotonous things of life and then we're like hang on a minute why do I not laugh and have fun like that kid down the road that I'm just seeing like playing basketball and riding his bike? Like there's not a camera in the world.
Starting point is 00:28:46 So a bit of a reminder for me was like, yeah, have more fun. Like do things. Don't worry so much. So what are those things for you? And just put them on the phone to flash up. I have it as an alarm. So you can go to an alarm and you can literally make it so it doesn't vibrate and it doesn't make any sound.
Starting point is 00:29:01 So it doesn't disturb you when you're doing anything, but it just flashes on the phone. And then the next time you're on your phone you see it and you're like ah there we are there was past Danielle or past Sophie or past Brianna reminding me to show up as unapologetically ambitious loving and fun all right I love that and I just think it's something very very powerful about reminding your future self around these things so those are my key ways of like reminding myself. Actually, no, there's one more. There's a fourth. There's one more. Okay. So if you follow me on Instagram, you are going to know I'm a bit of a post-it note fanatic. Like I kind of feel
Starting point is 00:29:37 like there's probably like a serious problem there. I have them everywhere. Everyone thinks they're overwhelming. Natalie comes to my desk and she's like oh my god there's so many post-it notes but I really like them and yes I make notes on them but I also if there's like really big goal that I want to be like right this is what I want to achieve I put it on a post-it note and I put it on the bottom of my computer screen so there you are there's another way of doing it the more you surround yourself with these guys the more likely you are to achieve them, in my experience. And you can get into the whole manifestation of that and the laws of attraction around that and the attraction of positive energy. And you can also get into the fact that when you look at something, often enough, you start seeing opportunities that exist around you to make that happen.
Starting point is 00:30:21 And you start acting in a way that shows up for those goals in a grander scale. So I hope you have found this monologue useful. There we have it. That concludes my five R's for goal setting into next year 2021. Welcome. Let's see the back of 2020. And like I said, review, reflect, refine, results, remind. So I would love for you to share with me any of your favorite takeaways from this episode I would love even more if you shared with me your goals that you have created on this episode because I really really do believe when you become intentional you set those goals you put them in paper you put them into visual form and I'm going to say this it's actually scientifically proven I can't remember the statistic on my head I think it's
Starting point is 00:31:08 like you're 30 times more likely to achieve it if you write this goal down so if that's not a big enough reason I don't know what it is so like I said I would love for you to share with me not only your takeaways from this episode but your goals and your favorite things that you would like to hear me talk about on future solo podcasts share them with me at daniellecanti and also tag at bossbabe link so bye for now enjoy your goal setting ritual i really hope that you have enjoyed this session with me today please share with me your goals and your dreams. I would absolutely love to hear from them. Share them with me at danialkanti and also share them at bossbabe.inc because it really, really is so, so powerful when you set your own goals. In fact, it's 30 times, you are 30 times more likely to achieve that goal if you set it and you write it down. so if that's not a big enough reason I don't know
