Starting point is 00:00:00 A boss babe is unapologetically ambitious and paves the way for herself and other women to rise, keep going and fighting on. She is on a mission to be her best self in all areas. It's just believing in yourself. Confidently stepping outside her comfort zone to create her own vision of success. Hey guys, welcome back to the Boss Babe podcast everyone. This is one of our behind the scenes Boss Babe business school episodes. I tell you what, I am really enjoying recording these. They've quickly become my favorite episodes to record because it really gives me the chance to reflect every other week about tools I'm utilizing or learnings that I'm having or just really reflecting on my own business journey. And right now, if you're
Starting point is 00:01:01 following me on social media, you will have seen that I came home to the UK for two weeks. I actually came with four days notice. And it inspired me to record this podcast because the reason that I created Boss Babe was twofold. First of all, I was a chiropractor. And in 2016, I was looking for a way to create location freedom because my dad had a really bad skiing accident. And if you haven't listened to that story, I think I even shared it in probably like the third ever episode that we did, but it really inspired me to be like, right, why am I doing what I am doing? What is my purpose? What is my mission in life? And how can I turn that into a business?
Starting point is 00:01:41 And two years later, founded Boss Babe in in 2018 and I share this story because the motions and the pieces that I went through really tied back to my why and as I sit here in my childhood home with my parents watching in my bedroom recording this that I grew up in as a kid it really made me realize that I've achieved my why not only as the business mission for Boss Babe but also my personal why of that location freedom meaning I could come back here and I want you guys to achieve your why's. I want you to have a fulfilled life and I want you to be able to create a life that you have dreamed of and I so so know that if I can do it you absolutely can. so I was inspired to create this episode because I wanted to talk about some of the steps that I've taken Boss Babe through and also taken
Starting point is 00:02:32 my personal mission through and share this with you in the hope that it helps you in creating the life and the business that you love so the way I'm going to do this episode is I'm going to share with you a framework that I've been applying at Boss Babe for some time because one of the first books that I ever read was Simon Sinek's Start With Why. How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. And I remember reading that in 2017, 2018 and really kind of asking myself, okay, what is my why and how do I go about finding that and also what does that mean for my life and then you fast forward five years I have applied this same framework that I'm going to share with you because not only founding Boss Babe but every product that we found I leverage this and understand that because it helps you create
Starting point is 00:03:23 the messaging and the branding strategies in business that you are going to need to make that thing successful. So if you're driving, no problem, but if you are, you know, listening around the house, you might just want to grab a paper and pen so that you can do this exercise in real time or come back to it at a later date. So let me explain this framework. It's called the golden circle. And generally, an average company will explain what they do, how they do it, and why you should buy their product. And they'll tell you in that order. So their order is what, how, why approach. But what Simon Sinek shared in the golden circle was actually to reverse that so you start with your why and then you work out from there which is I'm going to share a little bit more of so a standard
Starting point is 00:04:11 business when they talk about what they do how they do it and why they do it so they'll say oh I don't know let's say I'm making cakes and I want to sell my cakes locally at the farmer's market and it's like oh here are my cakes I make them with healthy ingredients and most and they taste good still so you should buy them and as you can see that's not exactly the most inspiring sales pitch so we say because you're just telling them what you do first you're not hooking them in with anything you're not intriguing them about anything that you are doing. So the problem is at that point is people don't buy the what, they often buy the why. They buy into a mission, they buy into
Starting point is 00:04:55 a vision and they buy in because you are solving their problems. You're giving them a solution to something that matters with them. So what you're going to do now is you're going to if you are if you do have that pen and paper draw the circle in the middle of the paper and inside it write your why now I want you to draw a larger circle around inside the outside of that and then you're going to put in how and then another circle around side that and put in what so you end up with kind of a bullseye looking image with why in the middle, then how, then what. Now when you're looking at this, this is the golden circle. This is the principle of the golden circle and I want to tell you why this matters. When you look at this every day, when you're building your business or you're building this product, you have to start with the
Starting point is 00:05:41 most inspiring piece at the center of it. And that is your why. This is your company's mission and the entire reason for existing in the first place. And it's really important to have this because it not only motivates you, but it motivates your customer and it motivates your employees, which let's be honest, no business is built on one person and so understanding and centering everything with a why is going to catapult your success not only in sales but also motivation for yourself and motivation for your team let's take a quick pause to talk about my new favorite all-in-one platform Kajabi you know I've been singing their praises lately because they have helped our business run so much smoother and with way less complexity which I love. Not to mention our team couldn't be happier because now everything
Starting point is 00:06:29 is in one place so it makes collecting data, creating pages, collecting payment, all the things so much simpler. One of our mottos at Boss Babe is simplify to amplify and Kajabi has really helped us do that this year. So of course I needed to share it here with you. It's the perfect time of year to do a bit of spring cleaning in your business, you know, get rid of the complexity and instead really focus on getting organized and making things as smooth as possible. I definitely recommend Kajabi to all of my clients and students. So if you're listening and haven't checked out Kajabi yet now is the perfect time to do so because they are offering Boss Babe listeners a 30-day free trial go to kajabi.com slash Boss Babe
Starting point is 00:07:12 to claim your 30-day free trial that's kajabi.com slash Boss Babe so let me share Boss Babes our why is to help ambitious women just like you make more money so that you can live a life that you love now that mission drives me forward every single day when I'm having hard days and I just don't want to get out of bed or I don't want to do the thing I always have in my heart this why like what I do matters because I really think nothing bad happens when women make more money I think it's so powerful to give women the tools that they can to create their own destinations and build their own lives. Now, because I have this powerful mission and this power, why? I and Natalie saw an opportunity to create a product called The Society. This is our what. And as many of you know, The Society is the place of female entrepreneurs.
Starting point is 00:08:02 It's the most amazing online community filled with masterclasses and done for you templates and coaching course and a really powerful network to bring women together to help create and help them make a safe space to build their businesses and you can't deny when even you're hearing me talk about this how fashionable I am like there's undoubtedly a resonance and a passion for this product, which things through, which then helps my whole team get really, really motivated on that. And that energizes us.
Starting point is 00:08:35 So my why energizes my what, and then in between that I find my how. So I'm like, okay, I have this business. It's on this mission. That is my why. And that led to my how, and that's created my what, So I'm like, okay, I have this business. It's on this mission. That is my why. And that led to my how, and that's created my what. And I'm going to walk you through this process so that you can do it yourself along the way and find that passion within your business. So for example, the why behind your brand, your product, or your service should divine your overarching purpose but the key is that it
Starting point is 00:09:05 needs to be more successful than anything related to your bottom line okay so just like with the cake example if it's just like oh we sell these cakes like that's not no one cares there's no passion around that and it can't just be something like oh my why is to make money for me and my family again you need to find something that your team can get on board with as a mission so let me share a couple. Tesla's mission statement is, Tesla believes the faster the world stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards a zero emission future, the better. Now that's way more motivating than if Tesla were just like, oh, buy our cool electric car. Like that's not, I'm not like resonating
Starting point is 00:09:41 with that. The same with people, if they come on board with Tesla, are they really going to be, oh my God, I want to work for Tesla because, you know, I just want to put these parts together and make a car. They could go to any car manufacturer versus, oh, I actually want to make a difference. And I really care about what's happening in the world. And I feel like Tesla is supporting that in, you know, eradicating the use of fossil fuels, X, Y, and Z. Another example is, let's say there was a swimwear brand that i was reading recently and it might just be like buy our swimwear right but again that's not really a why like okay i could go to any product-based business and buy that swimwear but their mission was buy our swimwear because we make it from recycled plastics which
Starting point is 00:10:24 are you know supporting you know, supporting, you know, conservation for our ocean, right? I'm totally butchering what their mission statement actually was, but you could tell it actually resonated with me. And therefore now I'm sharing it with you on this podcast. So I just want you to think in that manner. And when people connect with a why, it gives them something to talk about. It gives the customer something to relate to, but also it helps you attract people to build your business. So even if you are a freelancer, even if you were just one person in your company, understanding your why from the get go is actually really, really going to help you attract people into
Starting point is 00:10:58 it. That's exactly what we did with Boss Babe when it was me and Natalie and just a virtual assistant. We knew that our mission was to help you guys build businesses and create financial freedom and make more money via doing that. And so we attracted people right from the beginning who had that similar mission and really care. That's why our products are so amazing because the people that we work with as well are so, so passionate about their products that that sings through in everything that we do. So spend some time thinking about what is your
Starting point is 00:11:25 why? Why do you get out of bed every day? Why do you care about doing what you do versus just going to, you know, get a job doing X. And you really can't found a business without a strong why, because business is hard. It's so rewarding, the most rewarding thing you can do. But if you're not relating to it on a daily basis, if you're not loving what you're doing, you're going to give up in that process. So always, always find that why. Now, second of all, let's talk about the how. The how is all of the practical and logistical steps that you need to take to achieve your why. It's those operational pieces that will bring your vision to life. So let's take Amazon, for example, Jeff Bezos, his why was to continually raise the bar of the customer experience, right? By using the internet and technology to help
Starting point is 00:12:11 consumers find, discover, and buy anything. So his how, so he had his why, and he wanted to, I could say, essentially make it easier to shop online at multiple stores. And so his how was he needed to build a powerful online product that brought thousands of merchants together into one simple place and was really easy to use and he took that step but one step further and let's be real probably 10 steps further and actually created his own fleet of vehicles later down the line to not only have that in the US, but then make that quick and cost effective across the US and other countries. So his why drove his how, which then drove his what. So the what is the product or service that you are actually selling, but it has to be based on your why and your how, just like I said for the society and boss babe our what is the society
Starting point is 00:13:06 those masterclasses those done for yous and how was creating that membership called the society and our why was because we wanted to help women make more money so working back from there so you really really need to make sure that your what is here is exactly what I'm selling but when I talk about it I'm actually talking about the why I'm getting people excited about why they should be buying this and why it's going to have a better impact in their life so if you're listening to this and realizing that you tend to start your ideas by thinking about your what remember that you can start using this framework today it's called like I said the golden circle and I also love this quote that I want to share by Albert Einstein we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that created them so the next time
Starting point is 00:13:55 that you sit down to come up with a new product idea or you know whether it's physical or whether it's digital I want you to start with the why. Why are you creating it in the first place? Okay, so and honestly this comes with everything that you do in your life. When you find your why, I think it's really, really powerful to then be able to apply it in all different aspects, not just in business but in things that you choose to do in your life, how you spend your time. like we're here once you know I've been really reminded that recently with my grandma like we're here once and I really want every single one of you to live a life that you love live a life that excites you every day
Starting point is 00:14:35 and have an impact I always talk about in boss made the positive ripple effect if I can positively influence one of you to do, you know, go after their dream or to create a business that supports others, then you are going to go and influence probably not just one person, but two people or three people. And then those one or two or three people are going to make a change in their lives, which has another positive ripple effect. So I think we focus on our positive ripple effects and always bringing that to why, why we want to create this world, why we want to create the products that we put out in this world. Really, we can't go wrong.
