Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you alone for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the skinny confidential, him and her.
Starting point is 00:00:22 I love this idea of sunscreen layering and like different types and different modes. I think it's great. Because not everyone wants to cover up at the beach, right? And also using a beauty blender to reapply your sunscreen when you're at the beach. So you don't get your sandy hands all over your sunscreen. Just like have a beauty blender and then like be able to touch up. It's absolutely genius. You can like be more direct with your placement when it's like the wind's going and sand's going.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Hello, you have a semi solo episode today. I am the host. I kicked Michael Bostic off. this podcast because I wanted to get all the girly beauty details with the two women behind the Breaking Beauty Podcast. If you have not listened to their podcast and you're a beauty guru, you've got to give it a try. They have so many amazing guests on like Glossier, Emily Weiss. They have on Kim Kardashian's makeup artist, makeup by Mario. I'm actually on their podcast. They have the skincare guru, Dr. Pimple Popper, Jen Adkin. I'm telling you, like there's so many
Starting point is 00:01:31 good beauty episodes and they really dive beneath the surface. I have so much respect for the host, Carleen Higgins and Jill Dunn. They're a part of the Dear Media Network. So definitely check them out. This podcast is going to be all the beauty goodness. So if you're a skincare horror or a makeup horror, this one's for you. On a side note, I wanted to give a beauty tip before I got into this episode. I am currently setting up my cold plunge. Okay. It is the most amazing. situation, you guys. First of all, you should just know that cold plunge, the benefits are insane. So it's known to increase your happiness. It boosts your immune system. It helps with inflammation. I am so big on anything anti-inflammatory, as we know. It boost your metabolism. And it also is known to help with
Starting point is 00:02:18 weight loss and improve your circulation. There's like benefits for lymphatic drainage, all the things. And it sounds crazy, but I am just like so excited to bring you along this whole journey. You know I do Wim Hof breathwork, and normally I take a freezing cold shower. So to now have this plunge, I'm just so excited. I reached out to the company because the cold plunge that I got is aesthetically pleasing. I've seen a lot of ugly cold plunges. I know this sounds random. And so to have one that sort of looks like a white, chic mat bathtub was something that was very important to me at our new house in Austin.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I wanted to create this sanctuary. And I wanted the cold plunge to really evoke a zheq. Zend vibe. And so I did my research and I found, in my opinion, the best company for cold plunges. It's been recommended by everyone from Aubrey Marcus to Joe Rogan and the whole delivery process is super seamless. Anyway, I reached out to them for a code for you guys because I felt like I was going to share this beauty tip, but I felt like I wanted to give you a code in case you guys wanted to get one for your house too. And just before I give you the code, I want to tell you what we're doing is we're removing a bathtub, which is not as hard as you think. And we're just putting the cold
Starting point is 00:03:32 plunge in its place. So you've got to get on the cold plunge bandwagon. If you can't get on the cold plunge situation, then I would highly recommend implementing freezing cold showers into your routine. I honestly have to say it's one of the tools in my toolbox that helped me get over postpartum depression and anxiety. I do it for three minutes, freezing cold. But if you want the real deal cold plunge. You've got to go check out at the period cold plunge on Instagram. I stocked them on Instagram. I voice noted them. I became obsessed. If you want to go even deeper, you can go to the cold plunge.com. Okay. It's going to be life-changing. I've heard so many people rave about this. And like I said, they gave you guys a code. It's skinny plunge for $150 off. I honestly think cold is the best beauty
Starting point is 00:04:21 tip on the planet. You know it helped me so much after. my surgery. The benefits are endless. I can't stop raving about the cold. So you can catch me soon on Instagram story in my cold plunge. I think I can only do two minutes with my ice roller. Anyway, that's my beauty tip. I couldn't not share this. I harass the company. They probably think I'm crazy for a code for you guys. So use Skinny Plunge for $150 off. Anyway, on that note, I would love to introduce you to the women behind the Breaking Beauty podcast. It's a podcast all about the breakthrough products, people and moments in the beauty industry. And it's co-hosted, like I said, by Jill Dunn and Carleen Higgins. They are major. With that, let's welcome both of the women to the
Starting point is 00:05:04 Skinny Confidential, him and her podcast. This is the Skinny Confidential, him and her. So excited. I have the Breaking Beauty Bosses in studio today. I was just on their podcast, which is unbelievable. We went very, very deep and specific about all the tools. So you have to listen to their podcast with me on it after this. But first, I know Jill has been on the skinny confidential him and her podcast before, but Carleen hasn't. So I would love to get some context and background about how you guys started breaking beauty and how it even came about. I'm sure there's a story there. Yeah. So I'm Carleen. I'm the other half. I'm Jill's workwife. And yeah, I didn't get to do the show. first time around. We were in L.A., but I had to come home to my kids. So I didn't get to meet you,
Starting point is 00:05:57 but I'm so happy that we did that first pod swap because, of course, it led to all of this and us being on the Dear Media Network. And now we're like sister pods. And I love every minute of it. So yeah, I'm Carleen. And Jill and I both have a magazine background. So we are beauty editors. We were beauty editors originally. And we worked in the same building, two magazines on the same floor. And so we would always go to the same events, like the beauty events where they would like give us champagne and talk to us about the latest skincare. And Jill and I just got on. And honestly, I think it was the press trips where they would send us, you know, around the world like Paris or New York or wherever. And we always say we would end up like shutting down the lobby bar. And those are
Starting point is 00:06:47 the best moments and conversations. And that's how we got to. be friends. And then the way we started the podcast was I basically got laid off from the magazine after working there for 13 years. I really had like the golden handcuffs, I guess. I was so addicted to that job and like the paycheck, the fancy trips and all the products and all that stuff. And Jill had gone freelance like years before and she's like, girl, what are you doing? Like you're giving them all of your good ideas. And you have to start like doing this for yourself. But again, I had two kids and I was just like, no, no, not. So I needed that push from the universe to get me to leave. And that was in 2017. And I was like, what am I going to do?
Starting point is 00:07:36 Am I going to start a blog? Like, oh, okay, that's only like 13 years too late. And I was really into like podcasts at the time. And so was Jill. And there were only like three beauty podcasts on iTunes was at the time. And it was just like, why don't we do this, girl? Like, let's put our heads together and, you know, let's do it. And the way I remember it, we like chink the champagne, like chinked our glasses. And that's how it all started. Don't you find it so much more liberating now that you're able to speak freely on a platform without having someone else control the narrative, like a magazine? Oh, fuck, yeah. Yeah. I'm free now. I'm free. and I love it. It feels like to me, because I just like to say what's on my mind, like I can't imagine
Starting point is 00:08:25 someone saying, you know, you can't say this, we can only say this, you have to say this in a softer way. It seems like now that you both have your own podcast, it's a space where you can say whatever you want without having someone over you with like a wooden cane. Oh yeah. It's funny. You mentioned that. I remember working in a magazine and Twitter had just came out. Like I remember it was a big deal to have a Twitter account. And there were signs in the elevator like from this company that we worked at. And it said it was like a PSA, don't put the tweet in Twitter, aka don't tweet anything dumb that could reflect badly on you.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Well, sure enough, I couldn't help myself. And I tweeted out something about some dry shampoo I thought was shit. And before you know, at the same day, the ad sales department was like calling me into the office to be like, you got to delete that tweet. And I was like, well, I put the tweet in Twitter. Sorry about it. But like it just seems so crazy now. Like you couldn't express an opinion.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And I'm just so happy that we don't have that lording over us. I love having all the control, all the creative control. I'm like rubbing my hands together like a mad sign. Like I love it. Playing with your mustache and playing with your beard like a Disney villain. Yeah. Exactly. Saying whatever I want.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Good. Good for you guys. I love stories like this. I think it's so motivational for someone who feels stuck in a career. where they're not able to actually express their self in the way they want to. So that makes me happy to hear. I love that story. I want to get so granular with you guys on this episode with beauty.
Starting point is 00:09:57 I kicked Michael the fuck off this episode. I said this isn't for you. You've learned enough about skincare and makeup on the podcast. Let me just dive deep with both of these women. I want to tackle each area. So I think starting off, let's talk about something everyone is experiencing. and that is mask knee. And maybe some people aren't amazing,
Starting point is 00:10:20 but I feel like 90% of women, especially who I've talked to, are getting pariola dermatitis. I think that's how you pronounce it. If it's not, don't worry about it. Or acne or bacteria. What are you guys seeing that is getting rid of that? If you could name specific products or rituals or tools
Starting point is 00:10:39 that you're seeing to really help with that, that would be amazing. Or even tricks that you can do with your math. Right. Well, I'm definitely the oily skin person in this duo, so I can speak to that. I've definitely experienced mask me. It's been so annoying. Like, honestly, I have to say that this year has just been such a challenge for my skin. I think I'm not alone. And I think that the biggest thing for me has been exfoliation and like religious exfoliation. So one product that's like totally iconic, I have it here that I'm going to share with you. It's the Paula's choice, 2% BHA liquid exfoliants.
Starting point is 00:11:15 morning and night, this is a complete hero bestseller. If you guys are out there and you have acneic skin and you've never tried it, there's a reason that it's like all over Reddit. It's skincare by Hiram has made it blow up on TikTok. It's just iconic. You can get it at Sephora and L. And it's got that cellic acid in it. So that actually is a BHA.
Starting point is 00:11:35 It goes deeper into the pore than like an AHA or like a glycolic or a lactic acid. And so that's going to keep those pores clear and keep you from breaking out. feel like just religious use of that is so key. And you just like, you put it on a cotton pad, you wipe it on morning and night. And I actually just gave it to a friend of mine who was suffering from horrible acne. She's like, Jill, please help. I don't know what to do anymore. She was kind of at a loss. And I got her to try this. And she's like, I just ordered two more bottles. My skin is completely changed. And like, you know, when something really works, I want to like give it a shout out for sure. And I think the exfoliation is very important. And then I'm going to give a little shout
Starting point is 00:12:18 to one more product. And this is brand new from skin suiticles. This is a new favorite of mine. This is their, it's called Silly Marin C.F. It's a new vitamin C serum, Lauren, for oily skin. You know that we talked before about CE Furulic and skin suiticles. And it's so iconic for anti-aging. This is the holy grail for oily skin people. So it's got half a percent of salisilic. acid in it. It's got 15% vitamin C and it's got half a percent of frulic acid. So it's like anti-aging and anti-blemish. So I think that's also something a lot of people are looking for. And it's definitely worth the money. It's expensive. I think it's like 150 bucks, whereas the Polish choice is like $30. So two price points, two things that have been getting me through. I just want to tell the audience
Starting point is 00:13:05 so they don't have to take notes if they're driving. I'm going to leave everything that you guys talk about in the show notes. We are going to be talking about a lot of products in this episode because these are two product beauty junkies. So I will make sure that I take notes as you guys are talking so we can put it in the show notes and possibly do a blog post as well. Totally. Any other things for mask? I just wanted to add to that because I think there's two things going on with all of the masks that we're wearing. And one of them is Maskney like Jill talked about. But the other one is more like a dermatitis situation, which I think is what you were asking about as well, Lauren. And that's, we were talking about on our show, which you guys have to tune into as well, we were talking about how my son has that. So he's getting like little dots all over his mouth. And it's more like almost like a rash. And I feel like in that situation and you gave me the tip to just go to disposable masks, right? Because the cloth ones, they don't breathe as well. And they just keep that moisture from the breath inside the mask. And it's that humidity that's keeping all the bacteria and they're,
Starting point is 00:14:10 Mm-hmm. Causing this dermatitis. So I also think just switching out your mask. Like if you don't want to use necessarily a disposable one, like having a few of the cloth one so you're not wearing the same one all day. It's like grab a dry one. Yeah. And that's what when he was going to school, I was trying to get him in the habit of at
Starting point is 00:14:29 lunchtime, change your mask. I think that's so smart. I've heard people spraying the inside of their mask with like an antibacterial spray, like a skincare spray. and that seems to have helped too, like, because it is that bacteria that contributes to the acne
Starting point is 00:14:45 and the mask knee. And then one more final note, I can't say enough. We talked about this on our show, Lauren, but honestly, the Dr. Dennis Gross mask, I have been using this
Starting point is 00:14:53 every single day. And because it has that blue light, it really does help to reduce the bacteria and get rid of that acne, especially adult acne. It's just a whole other beast. The other day,
Starting point is 00:15:11 you had a Dear Media party. And it was more of a company mixer get together. A mixer. A mixer. The people had Dear Media like to party. Yeah. We did a survey and most of the people said like if we're going to do culture events, what are you going to do?
Starting point is 00:15:25 It was like party. And in everyone's hand was a Bev. I feel like Bev is taking over the world. It is the best summer beverage. It's canned wine, you guys. But it's canned wine that's not overly sweet. All the can wine I've tried is like too sweet. it's too heavy. This one is dry and crisp and light. It's a little fizzy, super refreshing.
Starting point is 00:15:51 It's just so good. There's zero sugar in it, which is huge because I cannot tell you how many brands I've looked into that adds so much added sugar. This one has zero sugar, three carbs, and 100 calories per serving. You should know that Bev is a female first canned wine brand that was founded to change not only a way a product is consumed, but the way an industry and culture have operated for generations, okay? So they sort of came in with this really feminine approach into a masculine industry. And the cans are so cute. You want them on your Instagram feed. Each can is a glass and a half of wine. I like to throw this in my handbag when I'm hopping in an Uber, if I'm being honest, but you could also enjoy it at a mixer like we did.
Starting point is 00:16:34 Bev ships straight to your door and shipping is always free. We interviewed the owner. She's coming on soon. Her name is Alex and she's incredible. And with the Bev team, and Alex, we've worked out an exclusive deal for Skinny Confidential Him and her listeners. You're going to receive 20% off your first purchase plus free shipping on all orders. I personally am a big fan of their best selling ladies night variety pack. And this way you can check out all the varietals. They have rosé, saub blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir. I'm a fan of the rosé, but you do you and you'll be able to tell which one you like.
Starting point is 00:17:09 You're going to go to Drinkbeb.com slash Skinny or use code Skinny at checkout. claim this deal. That's D-R-I-N-K-B-E-V-com slash skinny. Cheers. I completely agree with you. I told you guys this on your podcast, CAFlex toner was absolutely life-changing. It's crushed up calflex and which hazel. I used it for two days and it got rid of the dermatitis. But here's something else that I want to talk about and I'm going to consider this as beauty. I talked to a dentist and they said, when you have a mask over your face and you're breathing through your teeth all day. Everyone is going to have yellow teeth after this.
Starting point is 00:17:52 And also, let's take it even further and talk about the bacteria that's on the tongue. So I'm such a huge fan of tongue scraping twice a day. I don't know how anyone on earth doesn't tongue scrape. Like, I'm on this mission to bring tongue scraping to everyone. I think everyone should invest in a tongue scraper. Try not to get the BPA one, if you can. They have like the metal ones on Amazon and making sure that you're really taking care of your oral hygiene. Couldn't agree more. You don't realize how important it is that our teeth and tongue are breathing. So breasts are smelling bad, like the whole works because of these masks. So it's not just the skin. It's also the inside of the mouth that I think is incredibly important. Is there something in oral care that you have both found
Starting point is 00:18:38 that you think is like a standout star? Is it a teeth whitening strip, a tongue scraper, a certain toothpaste, A toothbrush would love to know. Okay. Well, I have a bit of a cheapy hack for that. And that is the Armandhammer baking soda toothpaste. I think it's like $3. And it truly is one of the best whitening toothpaste out there because baking soda is just so good for your oral hygiene. And it is really brightening.
Starting point is 00:19:04 And then I'd say the second thing to that is Bruch, which is a new electric toothbrush company. I think it's like $79. They come in a lot of really cute colors. they have actually built in on the, I think it's the first time I've ever seen it, but I use electric toothbrush every day. And on the back of their toothbrush head, they actually have a tongue scraper and they have a mode on the electric toothbrush for tongue scraping. So the first time I've seen that in electric toothbrush. I am in love with them. They're really affordable. I think they're like 70 or 80 bucks. And it's funny because the other ones, what is it? It's the sonic hair, the Philip
Starting point is 00:19:40 Sonicare and the Oral B. And I remember looking at like a chart and the bruch and the oral B and the sonic hair. And it's like it has all the features that both have. And it's like a third of the price. It's crazy. I'm going to shout out for you, F-O-R-E-O-F-O-R-O-R-O. Yeah. Toothbrushes.
Starting point is 00:19:58 I have one for me and one for Zaza. And we got them off shop Beauty Rillette. And they are the best consistency. And they have them in light pink and hot pink. They're so cute. and they work very well and you can also use them on your tongue. Don't sleep on the tongue. The tongue is important.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Don't forget about the tongue, okay? If you're like doing makeup and skincare and spray tan and eyebrows and all the things we have to do, we need to do a podcast called Don't Forget the Tongue. Totally. I couldn't agree more. As I've gotten older, I'm becoming more and more obsessed with my oral hygiene and I want to do invisaline.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I have a bit of a gap in between my two front teeth because my teeth are moving and that's a first, you know, and it's definitely something as I've gotten old. I've gotten more into. Mouthwash is underrated too, I think. Yeah, a good mouthwash. They have good ones now. They have charcoal ones and all that. A whole bunch of new ones have come out lately. Don't sleep on your oral care. Invisaline's amazing. I'm using it right now to widen my smile. I notice a huge difference. It's a bitch to remember every day, but it does work and I can totally tell a difference. So those are oral hygiene tips. We kind of took a turn, but that's okay. I would love to discuss something that I really struggle with, and I feel like you guys are the gurus on this subject. What are some things, products, tips that you have
Starting point is 00:21:17 on hyperpigmentation? Good question. So I think hyperpigmentation, like the ingredient everyone's talking about now is niacinamide. And I don't know if you've kind of folded that into your routine at all, but that's an ingredient that just kind of like gets at the dark spots and works from with in the skin to like lighten it up. And actually just speaking of specifics, this is a new ish brand that came to North America from Paris earlier in 2021, I want to say. It's called typology. And this is a really affordable 12% niacinamide serum. Basically, this line typology is like France's answer to the ordinary. Everything is like really affordable. These single ingredient, like, heavy hitting serums they have. So this is something you could incorporate into your routine and
Starting point is 00:22:10 not change anything you already have going on. And niacidamide is also great for like refining pores as well. So I think that's kind of the latest. Am I missing anything for dark spot removal? Yeah. One brand that's really exciting for I think a lot of people right now, it's making a lot of buzz in the industry. It's called topicals. And it's actually founded by at least one woman of color, if not two, I'm not sure. I can't remember exactly. Their number one product, it's called faded. And what's interesting about this, Lauren, is that it's for hyperpigmentation, but really specifically targeting a lot of skin of color because they suffer from so much hyperpigmentation. And I've heard nothing but incredible reviews about this one product. And I think it's like $40. It comes in a like a tin tube. And it's just
Starting point is 00:22:59 apparently magic for hyperpigmentation all over the face. So like forehead, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, that's incredible. And then one device that I want to shed out that's really cool for hyperpigmentation, it's called Opte. And basically what it is, it's like an inkjet printer for your skin. It's invisible makeup that's really made for people with hyperpigmentation. So if you want to cover up your hyperpigmentation, but you don't want to wear makeup, this is it. It's like a handheld device. It's like screen printing ink that's like the same color as your skin tone. And it magically makes your brown spots or dark spots disappear. And it does have niacinamide in it. So you're getting that instant coverage, but it also is like prevent here. You have to see the before and afters. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:23:50 It sounds like you're talking about airbrush makeup where it's like dancing with the stars. Like we're going to put this on you. But it's. It's. It's. It sounds like you. It's, literally is. It's kind of like that device we talked about on our show where, yeah, you're putting on on. And it's, it detects where the spots is and just like only applies the makeup there. So it looks like you have no makeup on. It's just covering up those spots. It's like insane. When I got it at home, I was like, okay, this is, this is a bit far fetched. It's like one of those things they launch in Las Vegas to just get press about. That's what I thought of for at first. And then I was like, holy shit, no, this is the future. Because, you know, it's like, you know, it's
Starting point is 00:24:27 like inkjet printing for your face, but you don't feel it. You don't see it. And your dark spots are instantly erased off your face. Can you send me the link for that on Instagram so I can look at that? I could see the wheels turning for Lauren. She's like, oh, the summer mustache. Okay. I'm scheming. My summer mustache, it is all above my upper lip. It looks like I drank like chocolate milk or something. You're going to a desert island. You can only bring three beauty products each. And it can be a tool. It can be, you know, something so random. Like for me, one of my beauty products would be a huge ass hat. What are you bringing? Well, any beauty editor you're going to ask is going to tell you a sunscreen, obviously. So I'm going to tell you my number one favorite. It's the biosance squaline and zinc sheer mineral sunscreen SPF 30. They actually rebooted it last year. I think they had one before. And this. new one, it's unbelievable that it's a mineral sunscreen and it is so sheer. Like it feels exactly like a lightweight daily moisturizer. You would never believe that it is actually a sunscreen.
Starting point is 00:25:40 It's for your face. And I've read tons of reviews on it. It goes on sheer any skin tone. So I think that's great because usually with mineral sunscreens, you get that white cast. So that one is like hands down the best. I actually think it's not a bad price too. It's like 29 bucks. And I love the squaline. It's such a hydrating ingredient. It really gets into the skin and plumps from within. I'm a big fan of biosan. So that would be probably my number one. My number two. Okay, this is like an unpopular opinion, but I don't know why. I'm obsessed with skincare essences. You know, like skincare waters, like kind of like toners. I love a beauty water. I love it. Like, and I know that this is. possibly considered completely unnecessary in a routine. So like why am I taking it to a desert island? But if you get one that says softening on the label, like a softening, plumping essence, like Tacha has one, Clay to Po has one, this is very like Japanese skin care inspired. It feels like water when you put it on, but it does have a softening effect. And because it is like a
Starting point is 00:26:53 water as opposed to a serum, the molecules are smaller. So it is getting further into your skin. And I just find that my skin over time, it's more plump. And you want to use it in your routine between steps because even your serum after is going to penetrate deeper. And I actually learn that from Renee Riloh. She's like a big celebrity facelist and LA beautyologist. They like to do like the skincare sandwich. She just says with water, you want to be. put on your serum like as quickly as possible because basically the ingredients are going to absorb better when there's like a wet surface, right? So I'm just obsessed with essences and I'd probably take, yeah, like taches or clay to pose. And then, oh my God, what would my third one be? You know what?
Starting point is 00:27:41 I would do a concealer because I have so much skin care redness. Like that's my thing. Who are you looking good for? I'm letting all my shit hang out. I'm letting my hyperpigmentation hang out. I'm in a puff it up. Who are you looking good for with your concealer? You know what? When Miss Narcissist goes to the water to see her own reflection, she wants to look good. Okay. What's the concealer of choice? I would probably do the tart shape tape. Yes, I'm a victim or the RMS, the RMS beauty one in a pot. Have you tried that you just said this brand and I'm going to pronounce it wrong, the Clare de Poe. How do you say it? Yeah, Clay to Poe. Concealer. I'm a fan of that concealer stick. Oh, that one too. Yeah, that one's so good. That was like my rider dive for so.
Starting point is 00:28:22 many years and it like lasts forever. And actually it's so thick. Yeah, I'd use that one. It's $500 million, but it does last a long time and it does work. It's, it's really good. It comes in a navy bottle. That's a good concealer. Okay, Jill, what are you bringing? I got to pay you a compliment. You're starting to look like me in a little bit of a, you know, I guess I'm paying myself a compliment. You're starting to look. Your hair is starting to get thick, thick like mine. Yes, and that is thanks to Neutroful. I am a huge fan of this. I have tested it on myself before we started working with them and I'm obsessed. And it's really great if you are in postpartum, especially, and you don't have as much hair as you once did. So I noticed
Starting point is 00:29:13 after I had a baby, my hair sort of thinned. So I went and saw all my options and I had heard about Nutrafol a long time ago, talked with the founder. But then I started actually using Nutraful's postpartum and I'm obsessed. okay, it's breastfeeding friendly and an OBGYN developed this. Okay, it's clinically tested 100% drug-free, natural ingredients, okay? And what it does is it helps support whole body recovery and fills in nutrition gaps. And it really helps you manage the shedding because you do shed after pregnancy. This helps you grow stronger, thicker hair. I have been using it for a couple months. Every single day, I take four every single day. I have it like laid out. in the morning. I like to take it with food and it goes down easy. It takes about three to six
Starting point is 00:30:02 months where you really start to see results, but you're going to get this thick, strong hair that just looks so healthy and luscious. It's kind of like a shampoo commercial where the girls walking out of the salon and her hair is bouncing. Okay, you know you want it. You can grow stronger, healthier hair and support the skinny confidential him and her show by going to NutraFoe.com and using promo code skinny. This saves you $15 off your first month's subscription, this is their best offer anywhere, and it's only available to U.S. customers for a limited time. You should also know they also included free shipping on every order, $15 off at NutraFold.com, spelled N-U-T-R-A-F-O-L.com, promo code Skinny. Let me know what you
Starting point is 00:30:45 think, drop into my DMs. Tell me the juice. Well, I feel like a troll, unless I'm wearing mascara, so that's number one. I would bring my favorite right now is the Powerglass cosmetics, instant extensions, I believe. I want to get the exact name for you guys. But it's kind of like a tubing mascara where it just like when it comes off at the end of the day, it's very washable. But you like feel it come off. And I'm just obsessed with it because it lasts. There's zero smudging. I actually did test it walking in a hurricane. So I know it will hold up. I highly recommend that would be one of my products. I think my other thing that I'm kind of obsessive about is exfoliation. And so I think. Even if I was sitting literally on a beach and I just wanted to feel like clean, I'd want to exfolate my skin. So I'd bring like Kate Somerville exfolicate. I actually just did that this morning in my shower. I'm obsessed with it. It's like, you know, that two minute treat me, you do twice a week. And it's just, it's iconic for a reason because it gives you those glowy results and your skin feels amazing. Pores look tighter afterwards. Love all of that. And then I'm also obsessed with lip balm. Like if I got to a desert
Starting point is 00:31:57 island and my lips were dry, I think I would just, I don't know what I would do. It would not be a good scene. I actually have a new favorite lip balm and it's from Lenege. And I know the last time I was on your show, Lauren, we talked about Lenege the, what's it called again? The pink one. Lips, sleep, sleeping mask. It's such a good one. But the trick with that I feel like is not to just wear it overnight. It's to wear it during the day. Totally. The pink sleeping mask one, it just like makes your lips so fuckable. Also, Summer Fridays has a great lip butter that I'm really into right now. Those two are great, I think.
Starting point is 00:32:31 So this is a new spin on the pink sleeping mask. This is a brand new one from Lanesh. It's called the lip treatment bomb. And it's so cool. It comes in a little pot. It's like very, very blush pink. The coolest thing, guys, is the applicator for it is just here. It's like hidden because you know what the sleeping mask, you got to stick your finger in it or you lose the little spatula that comes with it.
Starting point is 00:32:53 So they've thought ahead with this and the spatula like fits in. It's got a little home top of the bomb. So cute. And so it's not as like glossy as that lip sleeping mask from the mesh. It's actually a bomb texture. And I'm obsessed with this right now. I need to try it. Totally.
Starting point is 00:33:09 Let's discuss body. I just recently did a master class with Dr. Dennis Gross and we really focused on body. We focused on his exfoliating body pads. We talked about the importance of dry brushing and. and staying out of the sun. We even talked about when you're in yoga and you're doing downward dog and you look down at your knees and you're like, shit, I need to do something about my knees. Like, we're so focused on our face and our neck and our hands.
Starting point is 00:33:34 But what about the rest of the body? What are some products that you guys think just get it? Okay. I'm going to tell you about something really cool and new. This is from a brand called Plus. And these are sheets. I'm holding it up to the camera. They are body wash sheets.
Starting point is 00:33:51 Lauren, that are like going to replace your shower gel because everything about this is completely biodegradable. So there's single use sheets. So you think at first, oh, that's not great for the environment. But actually, every single thing about this washes down your drain in your shower. So you just wet the sheet that's inside and this becomes your body wash. And then you throw this on top of your drain and watch it disappear. And everything about it washes down the drain. And it's vegetable ink on the exterior of the package. And the lather is incredible. It comes in like three different sense. It's actually created by Julie Schott. She's the creator of Starface. And she was a former beauty editor. So I just love the innovation that's coming out in body care to your point.
Starting point is 00:34:37 I needed to see a video of this happening. Like the actual external package just melts away in the shower. Yeah. Washes down the drain. Does it wash your spray tan off? That I have a put it to the rigorous test yet. But if I were to do that, I would probably, like, lather myself with olive oil and sugar to get the spray tan going and then I would use this. But I just think about the potential of this technology for body and, you know, when we're traveling, we're on the road again. Like, I'll never travel with a clunky bottle of body wash ever again. I think that the It's foundation or coverage, CC cream is at cosmetics. I think that for me, that gives me the most beautiful glow that I've seen. It's dewy. It's good coverage. Is there a product, a makeup product that both of you guys
Starting point is 00:35:24 can say, wow, this is life-changing. I always reach for it. Oh, so many. It could be any makeup product. I don't like to overwhelm the audience. Like, I just like to give them one thing that we all have to try. I have two. Okay. You can do two. You know what? I have definitely drunk the Kool-Aid at the bar of Charlotte Tilbury. I just think that her products are so good. And if you're not a makeup artist and you want something that's really user friendly and it's like you're going to use it and you will look prettier after you're done using it, I think her bronzer, it's so good. The compact is like so pretty. This is the airbrush bronzer. It's in the palest shade. It doesn't even look like a bronzer because it's so pale. That's the thing. When you put it on,
Starting point is 00:36:15 on it doesn't look like, whoa, you've got this orange on your face. And she also has like really dark shades as well. And it's just so flattering. And I feel like her blushes, I forget what they're called, but it's a blush and then it has a swirl of highlight right in it. It's like you don't have to think about where am I putting my highlighter. It has the exact right amount of luminescence. So you get like this glow. And I just think if you want to look a little bit glammed up is just a sure bet. Like her stuff is so good. Jill, I'm buying that, by the way. Jill. Are we talking about foundation here, you guys? You can talk about any kind of makeup. Oh, it's so hard. It's so hard. Okay. I want to talk about this product, and it's kind of bougie. So excuse me. But this is very
Starting point is 00:37:00 innovative. It's from Chanel. It's called Chanel LeBezge. And it's not brand new this year, but they do have shade extensions. And this is their water fresh tint. You can see it's like almost empty. And this is just such a unique product and I'm obsessed with it for the summer. Essentially, what you do is it's got pigment burst suspended in water and you pump out a drop onto your hand. It comes with a little kabuki brush and you literally put this on your skin and it is that perfect French girl look in a bottle, which is like barely any, like no makeup makeup. Barely any makeup on, but your skin looks glowy. You look like you're not overdone, but you're put together. And I just think it's like so rare that you see like complete innovation, especially in the foundation category. And I think I would say this is like skincare makeup. It's definitely not a lot of coverage. And this is something I've been reaching for a lot like during the pandemic and during times when we didn't want to wear a lot of makeup. And I found myself returning to this. So if you want that like no makeup makeup makeup look, you don't love wearing a lot of makeup, but you want your skin to look glowy AF. This I highly recommend. And then on the opposite spectrum, if you want to look snatched with a
Starting point is 00:38:11 total full coverage look. The new Huda Beauty faux filter, she reformulated her foundation. It is incredible. I do a ton of camera work on TV and doesn't budge. You do not look shiny. It's so pretty on the skin. It's like a soft, radiant mat. And I can't say enough good things about it. I'm obsessed. Doesn't settle into your pores. And I love when beauty brands out there, someone like Hoda, she's been around forever. She doesn't really need to go back and reformulate products. They will sell. but she did because she knew she could like make it better. And I really appreciate that. So when there's, there's like new innovation and new technology that you can put into a formula, I appreciate when brands tweak accordingly and make what they have on offer better. So I would recommend those two for two totally different types of looks. I love it. Both of those sounds so interesting. I have to try both. Something that I pay attention to and I don't know if it's just because I geek out on like creativity and aesthetic is makeup. that make you look older than you are. You know, something that I've seen on myself is that I notice when I pull my brow down too far, I look older. So I've been sort of cutting it off at the end.
Starting point is 00:39:25 So it pulls the face up. Another thing that I do is I notice when I put highlighter on my temple, it pulls the eye up and makes me look younger. So like little tiny hacks that I do, that I feel like are not making me look older, but making me look younger. Is there something that you're seeing a lot of that you think ages people when they do? And like, you know, overlining their lips too much. Like, what are those little things that people are doing that you think a little tweak would make you look younger? What did you have for dinner last night? Salmon, ocean salmon.
Starting point is 00:40:07 Lemon chili flake, pink Himalayan, Dill Salmon. Mine didn't have Dill. I'm not a Dill fan, but Michaels did. This lemon spicy. salmon is insane, and that is thanks to Ocean Salmon, okay? This is for everyone who wants the perfect protein match. This is the best salmon that I have ever seen. It is delivered straight to your door. It's Ocean Raised salmon. It has more than 1,500 milligrams of Omega 3 content. Zaza even likes it. Here's the deal. It's free of microplastics, growth hormones, and heavy metals, which is so rare because I feel
Starting point is 00:40:46 Like so many salmon companies add shit to their salmon. And this one doesn't. It is fresh, okay? A week fresher than you would get at any other retailer. I am telling you this is the one you want to try. The one night stand. It ships fresh. It's never frozen.
Starting point is 00:41:03 This particular box is skin on fresh portions. It's an eight ounce portions duo. So sometimes if I'm just cooking it for myself, I'll do four ounces at night and save the other four ounces in the morning. Absolutely delicious. Packaged in a skin pack to preserve the freshness and the taste. And boy, does it deliver. It's $45 for Miami customers and $75 for national. Ocean raised salmon has double the omega-3 content versus most wild salmons. And their premium Atlantic salmon is raised in open nets in freshwater. They have different packets. Try it with a little Meyer lemons, some pink Himalayan salts, bake it in parchment for 20 minutes. Oh my God, it melts.
Starting point is 00:41:44 in your mouth. You are going to love it. Ocean Salmon arrives seven days fresher than anything you can find at your local retailer. Like I said, to get your box of Ocean, visit OceanSammon.com and use code skinny for 15% off plus free, free, free, free shipping. That's O-S-H-E-N-S-A-L-M-O-N.com. You're going to use code skinny. Ocean-raised, Ocean-loved salmon as it should be. Personally, I think a lot of times it's foundation. I know a lot of lot of people, you know, like I'm over 40 now. And I know a lot of people who are still wearing the same foundation that they were wearing back in like college. And I just think that your skin gets drier as you get older. Take it from me. Like I used to have a really oily T zone like whiteheads,
Starting point is 00:42:35 white heads constantly. And it took me a while to realize like, oh wow, I'm almost in the dry zone now. So to be using like, you know, a powder foundation when your skin is changing like that, it's just not the right move. It's going to settle into your fine lines and become cakey. So what I love to do, to be honest, is I take a product like what Jill just talked about, the Chanel LeBage or a tinted moisturizer, and I mix it with a foundation. I'm actually obsessed with mixing my foundations is one of my favorite things to do. So I really like the Clarence Foundation. It's really good on its own, but in the summer, it's all about a glow. Like if you want to look younger, you got to get a glow going somehow. So even if you have oily skin, you can put a little bit of
Starting point is 00:43:24 powder, you know, in your T zone afterwards, but it can't be full on powder everywhere. Do you know what I mean? So if you need to mix and create your own hybrid and get creative, that's what's going to make you look younger 100%. Yeah. And I would say two things. Number one is wearing really, really dark eyeliner like jet black and maybe you could pull it off when you're like a little bit younger, but it is quite aging. I always give that example of like Kate Middleton on her wedding day. She just like, everybody was like all you could see was the eyeliner. Apparently she did her makeup herself. I don't know. But it just wasn't as fresh or as flattering. And she was like very young at the time, right? So I think that that's something that a little less heavy handed on especially on like when you're doing the under eye
Starting point is 00:44:10 area as well. And then I think my biggest tip is about brows. Your brow color that you fill in should be a shade lighter than your hair color. And the reason is it's like you want people to see your face. You don't want them to see this stamp of color on your eyebrow. So most people will be totally fine with tope. I have quite dark hair and I only ever wear top eyebrow tint or eyebrow fill because it's definitely the most youthful and most flattering. And I think also just just in general, when people start to go gray with their hair, they tend to like try to hang on to their hair color they had when they were younger. And that can tend to look quite aging and too harsh. So most people have to go lighter as they get a little older if they want to keep dying
Starting point is 00:44:56 their hair. It's, it's definitely the most youthful way to do it. That's such a good tip. Sometimes I feel like my brow gets filled in a little bit too much. So that's a good, good tip for me, too. What I also notice, too, is when things are competing. So, if you're going to do like a gnarly eye, I like a lip, a chapstick. Or if I'm going to do a bold pink lip, I go really soft on the eyes. And when I say competing,
Starting point is 00:45:22 I even mean with clothes and hair. So like if I'm wearing this extravagant outfit, I try to just go sleek on the hair and natural on the makeup. If I'm doing like a gnarly ponytail, I try to tone down the makeup and tone down the outfit. I think that for me, I notice when there's too many things competing with each other, it's not useful.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Totally. I want to know thoughts on plastic surgery, Botox filler. You guys are obviously very much on the pulse of the industry. What are your thoughts? I love it all. Yeah. I definitely do Botox. I don't really believe so much, Lauren, in like preventative Botox.
Starting point is 00:45:59 I don't really think you should be spending your money on Botox until you see a line. I interviewed Dr. Jean Carruthers on our podcast way back in 2017, I believe. She invented Botox for cosmetic use. Okay, she's total OG. And that's what she told me. It's like, until you're looking in the mirror and you see the lines, you don't really need it. And I know a lot of people disagree with me on that. That's my personal opinion.
Starting point is 00:46:22 It's very expensive. Why start before you really need it? I do the under eye filler as well. And just I find that I look a lot less tired, less puffy. And we did a whole interview with Dr. Lara Devgan. She's a great plastic surgeon in New York. And we did back-to-back episodes about eyes. So, like, one episode was all about, like, eye treatments, what you can do with your eye cream to make you look younger.
Starting point is 00:46:46 But then we were like, when the eye cream isn't cutting it, Dr. Devgin, what do we do? And she gave us so many tips. And so right now I'm obsessed with watching her Instagram. I think she's an industry leader in terms of, like, what she's doing with plastic surgery. And she's female as well, which I think gives her, I don't know, she just has this finesse with the work that she does. Everyone just looks fresher and more beautiful, not done. And that's, I think, the direction that we're going. I don't know if you would have anything to add, Carleen, about treatments or procedures. Yeah. Well, I think one of the things that really interested me about her is, is the fact that, you know, not only does she do like
Starting point is 00:47:25 eye lifts and that kind of thing, but like micro procedures where it's like, I forgot what it's called now, but like the corner of your eye, the way it's like slightly slanted down, which mine is, it's like, she can do a tiny plastic surgery procedure where it's like tilting up slightly instead of tilting down. So as opposed to like the full, how do you say it, bless so far, me. Forget. Blufferoplasti. Blufferoplasti. Yeah. It's like there are other options that you can do. And it's, I need to go and see her. Oh my God. I have seen her for lips. She filled my lips. And she did a really nice job. And you are right. There is something to be said about a woman doing as opposed to a man. It's a softer, more feminine touch. I also find that in L.A., the doctors are more
Starting point is 00:48:14 extreme than they are in New York. In L.A., it's like almost you want to look a little bit overdone, whereas New York, it's almost better to be a little bit soft. It's so interesting how it's different on each coast. Yeah, what I find fascinating right now, Lauren, I don't know if you'll agree, as a real housewives fan, is they're all starting to go to the same doctor because I don't know if they're getting everything for free. But like Kyle gets a new smile. Ramona gets a new smile. And like, they're all going to the same person. And I find across the franchises from Beverly Hills to New York, they're starting to look more similar. That's why I think I'm obsessed with Meredith Marks from Salt Lake. I think she's just so beautiful and so soft. And I just think she is chic and rocks it.
Starting point is 00:49:00 She stands out. Her personality stands out. I love her. She's stunningly gorgeous. Did you go to Heather's place to get Botox? I did not go to her place. I told her I wanted to go. Heather, I got to go to beauty lab next time I come to Utah. You guys have to for sure interview her. I feel like she's perfect for your podcast. I know.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I love her. Love her so much. Sorry, that wasn't a side. No, that's a little side note. I would love to know some things that you guys do to protect yourself from the sun besides sunscreen. It seems to me that you're both very cognitive about the sun. What are some things?
Starting point is 00:49:34 I invested in a Prada ball cap that I have no regrets that I spent $500 on. No, but I think Jill is better in this category than I am. We were just talking about this the other day that she actually wears SPF clothing to the beach. I've never done that. I will do a hat. It has to be designer or I won't want to wear it. So I'm like, I'll just, you know, why not splash out? And then I'll wear it more. You don't want to wear my $5 Amazon hat that I have right here around like, how dorky is this? I don't care. I look so ugly walking around town in this huge hat. Oh my God. I would wear that jogging. I would wear that when I go for my runs. What about you, Jill? Tell us all about your SPF clothing. Yeah. I have just one from J. Crew,
Starting point is 00:50:21 like a long sleeve rash guard thing that if I'm in direct sun like at the beach prime time, like I'm definitely wearing that. And also Uniclo has great UV clothing. And I'm talking about like they don't just have like beach wear they have like stuff you can work out in that has UPF in it. It's the way that they like do the knit on the clothing that gives you the UPF protection. And you know, we just, we did not too long ago a whole episode about sunscreen. And I think that our guest at the time, Dr. Michelle Wong, she was talking about how UPF clothing and hats and being in the shade and stuff is just so much better. It's way better protection because there's so much user error when it comes to sunscreen. And I fully believe that. And it's so hard to touch up when you're at the beach and all of that. I'm always under an
Starting point is 00:51:08 umbrella. Like you see me coming to the beach. I love it. I'm total beach bum, but I have a full UV protectant like umbrella. I've got every SPF under the sun. I have a huge bag of it. Whatever texture you want, I've got it. I've got a stick. I've got a spray. I've got a fluid. I've got, you name it. I'm wearing a hat that has SPF in it. So I find that over time that definitely makes a difference. and it just makes me feel better and more protected about being in the sun for sure. And I'll just tell you one thing that scared me straight, Lauren, was that every beauty editor goes through this ritual of getting your picture taken under a blue light that shows you every bit of sun damage you ever had. And I've gotten that done when I was in my early 20s. And ever since then,
Starting point is 00:51:49 I've been like so religious about covering up in the sun. Get the fuck out of the sun. Totally. Exactly. I will add one last tip that I was sort of percolating in my head. And I just saw it on Twitter this morning from L.A. Beautiologist. She's so amazing. I don't know if you've talked to her on your podcast, but she's a facialist out of L.A. She goes by Nye, but it's Niamka, Robert Smith. She's also a YouTuber. She basically invented the 60-second rule when it comes to cleansing your face, which is the easiest, cheapest game changer ever. But I think when it comes to sunscreen, like we often get asked, what is the best way to reapply your sunscreen? And we've talked to like different people and they're like, well, I don't believe in the sprays or I don't believe in the powders or this and that.
Starting point is 00:52:37 The drops and all that. And it's really about layering. Like that's the best thing to do. And that's what she was tweeting about this morning. And she's like, if you can do three levels of SPF, then you're golden. So it's like if you want to start out with like sunscreen drops as your base, which I love like I love the Kula ones and the Venus Williams ones and then put a sunscreen like a sunscreen like a sunscreen. a regular sunscreen on top. And then if you're using a spray or a sunscreen powder later, it's like you've got these layers under it. So you're not just relying on that where, of course, it's going to be spotty with a spray or with a powder. Do you know what I mean? I'm mad at you that you didn't share that in my book. Well, I just heard it this morning. She like, she articulated it so well. This is what she's so great about. But I love this idea of sunscreen layering and like different types in different modes. I think it's great. Because not everyone. wants to cover up at the beach, right? And also using a beauty blender to reapply your sunscreen
Starting point is 00:53:37 when you're at the beach. So you don't get your sandy hands all over your sunscreen. Just like have a beauty blender and then like be able to touch up. It's absolutely genius. You can like be more direct with your placement when it's like the wind's going and the sand's going. I don't know what's worse having a sunscreen on your fingers or having flaming hot Cheetos on your fingers after a drunk night out. Would love to know an ancient hack. that you do for wellness or beauty. So you mentioned going to the beach. I love putting my feet in the sand. I think the healing properties of the sand are absolutely incredible for grounding. Is there anything that you both do that is an ancient practice that if you guys could give even one that's like free,
Starting point is 00:54:17 like grounding's free, it doesn't have to be free. But something ancient that really helps with beauty and wellness would be great. Okay. Well, I have one that I do and it's basically scalp massage. Like, is there any better moment than when you're at the hair? salon and they're massaging your head and they're like, you know, getting the shampoo all in there. And I just was like, one time I was washing my hair and I was like, why am I rushing this? Like, why don't I do that at home? And so I actually started to do it like a lot more deliberate with like scalp massage. And I just think it's great for like stimulating hair growth and also just like total relaxation. It is actually incredible. And I actually have one of those wire things. It's like it
Starting point is 00:54:59 kind of looks like an off. Oh, the head massager? Yeah. I have one of those like over there. And it literally is like instantly calming. There's something about that. And I know like in our avatic massage, which is like, you know, obviously very Eastern inspired. Like they spend like so much time on the head and scalp and neck massage. And it's just very important for like your overall health. And it feels you're instantly relaxed. You can't be stressed if you're massaging your head. That's something I do. Book podcast. a resource that you would direct our audience to, besides obviously your own incredible fucking podcast for beauty. There's so many. Well, the two that really have a great show, we did a pod swap
Starting point is 00:55:39 with them and we laughed our heads off the whole time. It's called the Double Cleanse podcast, and it's with the twins from the UK, Robert Welsh and James Welsh. And one's a skincare YouTuber and another is a makeup guru on YouTube. And they just have the best vibe. They really know product, but they giggle and laugh. And it's just a complete joy and escape to, like, turn them on. And like, I'll literally be walking down the street, listening to them and laughing out loud. I just think that they're so great. And Dr. Devgan, she actually has a podcast as well for just like more of that, like, you know,
