Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. One thing that Michael and I drink every single day and I've done through both pregnancies is bone broth. I was going to say the fountain of youth, but yeah, bone broth. Bone broth is the fountain of youth. And of course, you know, I've talked about this on stories. I always drink owl venice. If I'm ordering at home, this is the bone broth that I like. They carry organic, locally sourced bone broth elixirs.
Starting point is 00:00:25 They also have milkshakes and skincare and supplements, all different kinds of things on their site. The bone broth, though, is incredible. So they have this number one seller. It's called the owl reset, and it's an organic cleanse program. And this cleanse program is different than anything. I cannot wait to do it after this pregnancy. Basically, it's designed to heal the gut and restore balance. I've noticed, if you look at all these cleanse programs,
Starting point is 00:00:50 none of them are designed to heal the gut, which is wild. Owl Venice focuses on nutrient-dense, herb-infused, broth elixirs, and milkshakes that are packed with ingredients to regulate your digestion. So the whole cleanse is based on healing. And obviously you're going to look tight and amazing. But it also reduces inflammation and draws out toxins. So this is like the go-to cleanse that I will definitely be doing after the baby comes. But their whole entire mission is to pack their broth elixirs and milkshakes with nutrients,
Starting point is 00:01:20 whole foods, vegetables. Owl Venice has the best bone broth on the market. I'm telling you, order it, try it. I mean, you can add all different kinds of things. to it. Sometimes I add noodles. It's so good, full of benefits. And exclusively for the skinny confidential listeners, Alvenis is offering code Skinny at checkout for 15% off. You're going to visit Alvenis.com for more information. Use code skinny and get the bone broth. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie.
Starting point is 00:01:53 And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you alone for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the skinny confidential, him and her. With social media, you have to be on it day after day after day. It's like hourly in a way because of the stories now. But when I did it, I'd film five shows a day for a week in the Caribbean and I'd get home and I'd be a mom. Honestly, the rest of the time I was PR, I did a lot of talk shows. I did the Today show for four years. As their fitness expert, I did, oh my gosh, every day. show you could think of. Well, I think it's really cool too because, as you were saying, creating content like we are today, she was really an original influencer because you would go
Starting point is 00:02:39 out and call these brands and be like, hi, what was it, Florida orange juice or something? You're like, will you please sponsor my show and you would go to the CEOs? She would walk into Walmart CEOs and everywhere and call them up and call them 30 times and be like, sponsor my show. Turn this up for your mom and maybe your dad too, because we have fitness, legend icon Denise Austin on the podcast today and her lovely
Starting point is 00:03:09 amazing entrepreneurial daughter Katie Austin they are a force man first of all they have some energy a lot of energy in the room
Starting point is 00:03:18 a lot of energy what's so amazing about her is that Will Ferrell actually beat his meat to her on stepbrothers I think you had to clarify that in the movie stepbrothers listen we're going to get into a legal case
Starting point is 00:03:29 here you start to say Will Ferrell beat his meat to her but in the movie stepbrothers Yes, he did partake in that activity to her. Her daughter is like, the apple does not fall far from the tree because her daughter is dynamic, charismatic. She's beautiful. She has her own brand.
Starting point is 00:03:45 They both are amazing. They're vibrant, charismatic. You guys are going to love this episode. We talk all things, wellness, health, diet. And it's so sweet to have a mother and daughter on the podcast. I'm excited for this episode. Definitely send this to your mom. I feel like she'll freak out.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And on that note, Katie Austin, she is a sports illustrated swimsuit rookie. She's a certified fitness trainer, health coach, author, blogger, model, entrepreneur. She's been featured on numerous television shows. She has her own Snapchat show. I mean, wow. And then, of course, her mother, Denise Austin, is a pioneer in the fitness industry for over 40 years. 40 years, you guys, that is dedication. Best-selling author and creator of Fit Over 50 Magazine, which I got to see in person.
Starting point is 00:04:31 it's major. She is a champion for women and they both have all the energy in the world. Welcome mother-daughter team, Katie and Denise Austin to the skinny confidential him and her podcast.
Starting point is 00:04:42 This is the skinny confidential him and her. You essentially started doing content in a different medium before anyone else did it. And you did it in a way you distributed it differently. It was in everyone's videotape
Starting point is 00:04:59 whereas people were just, what, taking workout classes normally? Hardly. it was in 1981. There were no gyms at all. None. I started in a racquetball court. I rented out racquetball courts.
Starting point is 00:05:13 And I loaded them up, all line up, and put on my little music, and I taught aerobics. So is there, the first time you teach aerobics class in your racquetball gym, is there already like a line out the door?
Starting point is 00:05:26 Was there like two people? Oh, yeah, because I'd do it two. Oh, no, I had a big group right away. It was just beginning aerobics. the word aerobics in 1981. Is this like Richard Simmons Lisa Rana day or is this? It was Richard Simmons.
Starting point is 00:05:41 I don't remember Richard Simmons. Yes. No, you didn't. Oh, yes. Is he like you? He's my friend. Yes, of course. I've been in this for 40 years.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Can I do a workout class with Denise, Richard Simmons, and Jane Fonda? I wish he would. I wish he would. He wouldn't? No, he's kind of recluse now. He's done. He got, I mean, he had so much publicity.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Yes. And then they did that show, you know, then they did a podcast and everything. I don't know. Now, where is Richard Timmy? Yeah, exactly. We missed you. We missed you. Everyone would like in briefs you came out.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Oh, yeah. Come on our podcast if you want. Okay. Okay. So while I have you guys here, you both look amazing. You have really good energy. Your eyes are sparkly. I mean, you look like sisters.
Starting point is 00:06:27 You guys are so cute. Oh, thank you. I had to go take a cold shower before I came back in the studio. You guys came with a lot of energy. I was like, oh, I was going to get it going. Are you sure it was a cold shower? What were you doing? Taylor had to go collect myself.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Taylor had to go collect himself, too. He's been in the back room closet. We don't know what he's doing. I want you guys to edit my breakfast on air because I feel like it's a lot of fruit and I'm eating a lot of fruit because everything tastes like metal. But I want you to tell me
Starting point is 00:06:56 what you would do differently. But first, if you could describe it to the audience, maybe that would be good. Okay, so she has blackberries, blueberries, cacao nibs, and a date. And it's honestly a good portion size, I will say that. And, you know, you are pregnant, so it's great nutrients.
Starting point is 00:07:10 But at the same time, I would add a little bit of Greek yogurt. Yes, plain. Yeah. And you need some protein in there. That's a lot of, you know, sugars. It's still beautiful. And fruits are very important, but I'd do half of that. And then inside that little day, I'd put a little almond butter in there.
Starting point is 00:07:27 So you get a little extra, maybe a little flaxseed on top. So then you get omega-3s. get some more protein to hold you off a little while, and then, of course, the berries are perfect. What are you guys' tricks for getting more protein in? Because I can't, like, eat a chicken. I just can't do it. Everyone's like, you have a chicken and broccoli. That sounds like dry and boring, and I just can't do it. I agree. I think almond butter is a great natural one. I also love protein powder, like plant-based protein powder. I love a lot of beans. I eat a lot of beans. I ate a breakfast bread this morning with lentils in it to get a little extra protein in a real. Don't worry about it. That sounds good.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Yeah, and I like a lot of natural protein, you know, lean protein like chicken, ground turkey, salmon and stuff like that. But we're at a hotel. What do you guys, do you guys order your, we're at a hotel for two weeks. Do you eat eggs? Eggs are turning me off right now. Normally all the time. By the way, this is normally all the time eggs. This is not my breakfast when I'm not pregnant.
Starting point is 00:08:23 But I just am trying to find creative ways to also get protein in when traveling. Okay. I love almonds. You take almonds on the road. Those are so good for you. And also walnuts. I roast my walnuts. You put it in a nice frying pan.
Starting point is 00:08:38 No oil. Get it a little warmed up and then take it out and let it cool a little bit. Then put a little bit of raw sea salt. And it's the best. It tastes like popcorn. It's the best snack ever. And it's great on top of salads or anything like that too. And you'll have it for the whole week.
Starting point is 00:08:53 It's so good. Walnuts roast them put sea salt on it. Yes. Only roast them for like two, three minutes. Sounds good. And not too high on heat, it burns because it has its own natural oils that help your skin, your hair. The way my mom talks is like her hand, and she's a very desperate amount. I love it. I love it. Okay. So I want to go back to tell both of your stories separately.
Starting point is 00:09:15 And I think it's only appropriate to start with your mom because you weren't there yet. When did you get into fitness? Well, I got my degree. I went to the University of Arizona like you, Michael. She Googleded you. It didn't know. It didn't know. Denise. Denise Austin was at the University of Arizona. Can you imagine if Denise Austin met Michael Bostick at the Jungle Party? Listen, Denise, who knows in different times?
Starting point is 00:09:38 She also gave the commencement speech at U of A. And I did, and I brought you a present. I wonder if it was like one of the years. Okay. I had to wear the gown. And then I whipped the gown off and adjourned my commencement address in a hot piece, Leodar. Denise, like I said, I mean, different areas, different times.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I would have crossed past. Do not learn with Denise in front of me. I have to. Okay. I have to. By the way, you guys, if you're just listening,
Starting point is 00:10:06 she brought a newspaper clipping from Michael to see her in her leotard. That's pretty cool, though. I gave us, they asked me and be the commencement address speaker. And so the night before we had a big dinner and I asked the president of the university, I have a little secret that I want to do tomorrow for the students.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Am I okay? Are you okay? And is this appropriate that I wear the gown, of course, line up with everybody. And then when I start my speech, I'll talk a little about how poor it is to take good care of your body. And then I had it all pinned perfectly. And I whipped it off.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I said, and the most important is taking care of your body. Let's all stand up and do a little aerobics. Hold on. So you were in college taking care of your body. You already knew. I was a gymnast. I was on a full athletic scholarship in gymnastics. So my whole life was training, discipline, you know, practicing, doing gymnastics.
Starting point is 00:10:59 I was offered an athletic scholarship at University of Arizona, and that's where I went. And then I got my degree in exercise physiology, and I graduated in 80, so by 81, aerobics was just beginning. And guess who I met? Jack LaLayne. Jack Lelaine used to have an exercise TV show. He's like the old man who, you know, did all kinds of feats, swam across to Catalina Island with boats. You know, he was just the most amazing person. So I loved him and I got a chance to be on his TV show and they loved me so much.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Him and his wife Elaine Elaine. And I was a co-host and I was like, this is the best thing in the whole world to be on TV, doing my favorite thing. I choreographed all the routines because I was a gymnast and, you know, I had to choreograph floor exercise. So it became so natural to do aerobics. Have you always had this kind of energy? I know. I'm like, oh, my God, I should have had another cup of coffee. The baby will be fine.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Literally she wakes up like this at 5.30 a.m. It's pretty incredible. Yeah. And I'm 65 now. I just had a birthday. And I feel great. I feel like I'm 40. I still,
Starting point is 00:12:09 just last week I was with all my girlfriends, I danced on tables. In Park City. She's not like. It's so much fun to have a mom like that. She is, like you said, she's honestly my sister.
Starting point is 00:12:20 That's why we're so close too because, you know, she acts like she's 21. I will literally be wearing leggings. Like, you know, her day and age, she was wearing this, like a leotard short shorts and everything. Oh, up the rear.
Starting point is 00:12:30 And she hates me wearing leggings. She's like, less close. Come on, show your body. You're young. I just told you after I give birth to this baby that my shorts are going to show my labia. I am so ready to just let every single facet of my curb hang out. You have a really sexy wife.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I am losing this weight. Why do she's got another one in the way? I am tightening things up. I'm getting there, which we're going to talk about, and I'm going to be wearing this outfit that you wore on stage. I have it. Katie's worn it. I have saved everything. I have saved all my old 1980s outfits, and Katie and I have done some retroerobic workouts together. Wait, you should dress up for her as Halloween with the cap on.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Lauren, I've done it six times, and everyone's like, and I did it literally two years ago, and they're like, give it up, Katie. Like, you have to stop dressing like your mom. I'm like, but it's so easy because I don't like to dress up and, like, go after a huge outfit. costume. I don't have that like, you know, time and effort in me. And so I just take one of her old outfits and put it on. They're like, dude, it's too much. You do it too much. Tress up as the guy in the back who's beating his meat. Look at the Dean's face. Did you guys actually know she was in Stepbrothers, the opening scene when Will Ferrell was beating his meat to my mom? Yeah. Yeah, fun fact. I was, he asked me
Starting point is 00:13:45 if I could use a portion of my TV show because I had a television show. So after Jack La Lane, I got my own TV show and I started on ESPN back in the day, right when it was starting. And so I had my own exercise TV show. So I was on ESPN for 10 years. And then I got a lot of weirdo letters, you know, being on ESPN at all. And I moved on to Lifetime TV for women. And I was on there for 14 years. So I was on TV every weekday morning for 24 years, which is quite, you know, amazing back in the day.
Starting point is 00:14:16 No, I mean, I start to think this is our six year. We just had our six year doing this. I'm like, yeah, it's been a long time. But 24 years of Jesus. Yes. And so when Katie and Kelly, our two daughters were born, I was on the road. I had to film my TV show right when she was six weeks old.
Starting point is 00:14:31 I had to get back to, you know, to Hawaii and nurse her and get ready for my leotards. I don't know if the networks get away with that now. Now they've got to give a little bit more time, right? Oh, yeah. Well, that was my time. I owned my own show. So it was a little different. Can we go back so Will Farrell was beating his meat to you in your workout video?
Starting point is 00:14:48 Yes, and one of my exercise TV shows. And stepbrothers. And I gave approval. And they even tell you what they're doing. When you receive it to make a, you know, statement that you say yes to, you know, this is fine with me. I didn't care. Oh, my God. I would love it.
Starting point is 00:15:05 If Will Ferrell's like, I'm going to beat my meat to you. I would be like, that's like an accolade to hang next to an Academy Award. Don't bother me, Mom. Mom, he said on the show. Okay. So you create this fitness brand. You have two kids while you're doing it. I feel like I have experienced how much pressure it is to be on social media now.
Starting point is 00:15:24 and with my first daughter, I gained 55 pounds, and it took two years to lose. Is that not a lot of pressure to be this fitness icon and then gain all this weight and then you have to lose it right away? So many of you listened to the Clear STEM podcast with the founders. It was wild. A lot of you guys want to know about acne. I'm not surprised, Lauren. Everybody has issues with skin, including me, right?
Starting point is 00:15:54 By the way, I mean, I know a lot of people listen to that episode. Side note, I'm not going to stop eating eggs. So I got to figure out what to use, which is why I like this partner because I'm obviously going to have to use the products because I'm just going to keep eating eggs and breaking out. Okay. So first of all, if you struggle with acne, after talking to the founders of Clearstem, I would highly recommend you check them out. These women have done their research when it comes to acne. On their site, they also have anti-aging and non-toxic skincare. Lots of different things. I personally am a fan of their sunscreen. It's a powdered sunscreen. Why I like it is I'll be in the car.
Starting point is 00:16:26 and I already have my makeup and sunscreen on and I can't reapply sunscreen so I can just use their little stick powder on top of my makeup. I think that's absolutely genius. I keep one in my car and one in my purse so I can use it when I have makeup on. There's nothing worse than having to apply like white sunscreen on top of the makeup. It doesn't work if you know what I mean. Clearstem's education helps you identify your unique acne triggers and getting to the root cause of your acne. Just to give you a little bit of background on ClearSem. It was formulated by the Acne Guru and based on over eight years of treating acne at a San Diego Acne Clinic. So she's a practitioner. She understands acne and everything they created is not going to trigger pimples, which is very important. Clearstem's education helps you
Starting point is 00:17:11 identify your unique acne triggers and gets to the root cause of your acne. So many of you guys DMD me pictures of your husband's back with acne or your friend's face with acne. And so many of you has said that Clearstem has helped. Use Code Skinny at checkout for 20% off your first purchase. It's Clearstemskincare.com, 20% off, use code skinny. Use Code Skinny at checkout for 20% off your first purchase. It's Clearstemskincare.com, 20% off, use code skinny. You know, I really truly wasn't worried about it. And we didn't have social media at the time. So I didn't feel, actually, my ratings went sky high right after I had Katie because they wanted to see what the hell my tummy look like.
Starting point is 00:17:57 It's relatable, probably. Yes, it's relatable. And so I never had a lot of pressure on myself. I was just honestly, like a normal mom just, this was my job. I loved it. It's my passion. But I wasn't hard on myself at all. I just knew it's going to come off.
Starting point is 00:18:13 I'm going to be fine. My tummy's going to be flat again, hopefully. It is. Yes, I can confirm it is. I had faith. I had hope and I didn't worry about it. We lived in Washington, D.C., where they, They grew up where it wasn't, we, no one cared as much as they do now in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:18:30 I mean, truly. So when you would go out, before you had kids, were you getting recognized left and right? No, I became more famous after the kids because it took a while to build my business. And by that time, I had VHS exercise videos, then DVDs, and I sold 25 million between DVDs and VHS. Jesus. Yeah. 25 million. And it'll hold the record because you can't sell a damn one anymore.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Right? I'll always hold it. Nobody's going to break it. No, it's going to be able to break it. Wait, like what is that now with YouTube views? If you were to put that now. I don't think you could compare them because it's so different because if people didn't, you didn't have access.
Starting point is 00:19:12 I mean, YouTube, you can just watch endless amounts of content. This was limited back then, right? If you didn't have a, you know, if you were doing the same type of thing, creating content, but you didn't have a DVD and you did. Like, you weren't going to see the other person. I remember my mom. mom, I feel like I want to say it was a step-up exercise that she was doing with you. And you know, your mom has all her DVDs and still does them all the time. I remember my mom looks great.
Starting point is 00:19:34 What's the thing that, what's the little platform that, I guess it's called a step aerobics. I had a Denise Austin step-erobic. Yes. Yes, you had a branded one. I had my whole line of exercise. Was it blue or green or something? I had different colors. One was pink, turquoise and black. Might have been turquoise. Yes, it was turquoise. Maybe my mom does that. Yes. Yes. your mom does do it. I'm going to call her after this and ask you. And they were lightweight so you can pick them up and throw them back. Your mom is going to freak the fuck out when she sees a selfie with you and Denise Austin. You have to flex your muscle. Oh, we'll call her afterwards. You know what? She just, I think she's in Europe right now. She just, she just failed. She left my dad.
Starting point is 00:20:09 She said to get the hell out of it. Yeah, wake up. Okay. So what is so interesting to me, and then I want to get into the baby stuff about you, though, is you were creating content exactly how Katie and I are creating content back in the day. And then you were content marketing to create a product. Yes. Meaning like you were showing how to work out and then you introduced the step. And you were showing how to work out and you had your video. What was that like compared to now?
Starting point is 00:20:39 Oh, it's so different now because with social media, you have to be on it day after day after day. It's like hourly in a way because of the stories now. When I did it, I'd film five shows a day for a week in the Caribbean, and I'd get home, and I'd be a mom. I was picking them up from school. So one week a month, I was out of town. So honestly, the rest of the time I was PR, I did a lot of talk shows.
Starting point is 00:21:06 I did the Today Show for four years as their fitness expert. I did, oh my gosh, every show you could think of. You know, PR was important back then, and that was my avenue. Like you are having the podcast. this is your, you know, chance to feel, show the world what you do. And I just loved having a TV show because I was able to really, you know, just say anything I wanted, just me alone. I just would think of the, come on, you know, squeeze your butt.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Come on right now. If you don't squeeze it, no one else will. And people are like, write me and say, that's the best line, you know. That is a good line. You know, sit up tall, pulling that tummy. There you did. Sit up. Well, I think it's really cool, too, because as you were saying, creating content, like,
Starting point is 00:21:48 we are today, she was really an original influencer because you would go out and call these brands and be like, hi, what was it, Florida Orange Juice or something? You're like, will you please sponsor my show and you would go to the CEOs? She would walk into Walmart CEOs and everywhere and call them up and called them 30 times and be like, sponsor my show. And so I think that was really cool because she did have those brand integrations just like we do today, but in a different sort of distribution way. Yes. He was ahead of the times. Yeah, I called up cold calls to every single sponsor. I had three sponsors a year, but most of them stayed on for 10, 15 years, you know. And so I did all the calls, all the calls to the hotels where I would do, you know, spread out my little film crew and
Starting point is 00:22:31 film five shows a day. So I became, you know, I had to call to get on the Today Show. It was 1984. They've never had fitness on the Today Show ever. Jane Polly and Bryant Gumbull. And I called Steve Friedman 35 times executive producer, till finally one time I said, you know what, I'm calling them 9 to 5 being a really nice, you know, good person. I'm going to call it an odd time. I called it 630 at night. Steve Friedman, I was like, oh, hi, Steve. This is Denise Austin. You can't turn away a call from Denise. And I flew me up to Rockefeller Center and I got down the floor and show what I'm going to do on your TV show. You are going to give me four minutes and I'm going to show how to get a rock hard tummy, how to, you know, boom, move.
Starting point is 00:23:17 and he gave me a piece of paper March 23rd, 24th, and those were my first dates on the show. And then I had a contract for four straight years once a month. Dude, you were hustling. You made the word hustling before anyone was hustling. I loved it. It was so fun. I did it myself, but my husband, mind you, he's really,
Starting point is 00:23:35 he's really, yeah. He's so humble and so smart and brilliant. Such integrity, and he's a lawyer. So he did all my mom's contracts, and he was like, their biggest supporter too. I have a hot tip. Marry a lawyer if you're really great of business.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Find a lawyer. Just like weed through Tinder or some shit. Look for the lawyer because it's like efficient, right? You just have the lawyer in bed with you. I have to know this. What was your childhood like? What were your parents like?
Starting point is 00:24:02 Where does this come from? Well, I'm one of five. I'm the middle child. And I was always busy. You know, being a gymnast at 11 years old, going to practice. My dad played professional baseball. Joe Kattnich.
Starting point is 00:24:15 She played on, well, St. Louis Brown's in 1942, 43, no, 46 and 47. And then my mom, she loved, she was a jump rope person. Because they're both active parents. Yes, very active. And we had five kids. And we had to do everything ourselves. I mean, my parents didn't even drive me to college. You don't say goodbye.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Bye, Mom. I drove away with a friend. So you almost had to, like, stand out in a way to get your parents' tension because you have five kids. Yes, I didn't need their attention. I felt like my father was a salesman, Eminem Mars Candy Company, for 44 years. Wow. So I used to go when I was five years old with them to stores and do front facing for all the Eminem. I'm sure you sold a shitloaded on the house. Eminem Mars can't bar. So I love to go with them to do all that. I thought that was so cool. Make sure the product is seen at high level. So I'd switch it all. I was five. We have video of me doing that. And I think it became normal when I had my own VHS. Okay, let's go to that Walmart. Fix it all up.
Starting point is 00:25:20 My sisters would do it for me. Isn't it amazing how you look back on your childhood in those moments? Like you refined to create the career that you have. Like the styling of the M&Ms and then you're styling your VHS tapes. Right. It's really cool. Okay. So we're getting into the story.
Starting point is 00:25:38 But first I need to know, because you told me off air, you also said it on air, that you had to lose the weight in six weeks after you had Katie. But I didn't lose it. I had still a tummy. I didn't. I just tried my best because I didn't want to overdo it because I also had a three-year-old. You know, Katie has an older sister, Kelly. So I had her running around.
Starting point is 00:25:59 I had to nurse Katie and get ready and choreographed my routines and write out my music. So I had to get my leotards ready. So how are you losing weight? as someone who's sitting at the table really would like to know inquiring minds, how are you losing weight? I mean, you said you didn't lose it all, but you're getting fit in those six weeks. Like, what are you doing? Because I need some tips. Walking only. I only started with walking. Walking. Because you can't work out. So when I went to film that show, that was the first time I did my sit-ups, first time. But I have great memory, muscle memory. It came right back and I just did it.
Starting point is 00:26:36 I don't know. So walking, like, are you walking like two hours a day to get and change? for that or is you just like walking like walking just you know i i really believe in isometrics i right after i had the babies i tried to pull my tummy in belly button in almost like tighten up your abs feel like you're tightening up so i was very conscientious of good posture during pregnancy pull the abs in i'm an ab nut so i believe it's a center of the body and protects your spine protects your baby so i was very conditioned and in shape while I was pregnant because I had to film exercise videos. And you want to hear a fun little fact? You know, my husband represents Stefan Curry, the greatest basketball player ever at our
Starting point is 00:27:22 eyes and family member. So my husband represented his dad for 17 years. So when I was pregnant, we did it with my oldest daughter, Kelly, and Stefan's mom was pregnant with Seth, the second bait boy. We did an exercise video together. She was, you know, one of my backup girls. And then we had to do an after-baby shape-up a month later, hold our little babies to prove it was a month later. And then we did a workout after-baby-shape-up workout for 20 minutes.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Maybe I should just go back to the basics and just put your VHS tape on and do the pregnancy. I digitized them. So I got them on digital now. Honestly, I'm not joking. I think that simple works. And I'm going to, I'm not joking, I'm going to pull up your VHS and try to do it during pregnancy. That's awesome. Just shake it.
Starting point is 00:28:09 shake the baby in my arms like you did. Okay, so I want to know about you guys' relationship as you're growing up. What is it like to grow up with a mom who has so much charisma? She's out there. Like, is it annoying that when you go to lunch, people are coming up to her? Like, what is it like? If you are not on the beekeepers naturals train, you are missing out. It's time to upgrade the medicine cabinet. First of all, I still take the bee shots every single day. They're like liquid Adderall. They are these little shots of royal jelly. I like to have them with my tea and I'll just shoot one down. I kind of swish it in my mouth to let it sink in. It tastes so delicious. And it gives you energy. And it's not like coffee, jittery energy. It's just like a jolt of natural
Starting point is 00:28:55 energy. I have sent these to every single one of my friends. I make them like a wellness kit and they all come back raving about these shots. You have to try them. The other thing that I was blown away by, I hadn't tried it at all because I wasn't sick and then I got sick and I tried their be better nighttime cough syrup and I couldn't believe it. I stalked the owner on Instagram, Carly, she's been on the show and was like, please, please, please, can I get more of this? It is this cough syrup that works so well. It's the elderberry one and it's the nighttime support. First of all, it tastes so good, but it was the only thing that was working for the cough that I had. it like coats your throat in the best way. It's not too sweet. And it was nice to actually take a
Starting point is 00:29:40 cough syrup that wasn't quote unquote bad for me. Like it wasn't filled with all this extra shit because beekeepers natural products are made with clean ingredients, which is why you can make over your medicine cabinet with them. This is the cough syrup that I would give my daughter. This is what I give Michael. This is now the only cough syrup I will use. And it's certified keto, certified paleo, gluten-free natural, always third-party tested free of artificial. colors, preservatives, fillers, alcohols, gluten, GMOs, pesticides, and refined sugars. Tell me another cough syrup that does that because I can't name one. Also important to note that B-Propolis is so medicinal.
Starting point is 00:30:17 It's full of vitamin B, vitamin C, zinc, and over 300 beneficial compounds. It also has minerals in it. So you're getting all these incredible things when you're taking the cough syrup. I'm very much about this. I'm not doing nasty ass cough syrup anymore. Today, beekeepers naturals is offering you an exclusive offer. You go to beekeepers naturals.com slash skinny and intercode skinny. You get 25% off your order.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Like I said, get the shots. Royal jelly shots are so good. And get the algebra syrup. You can't go wrong. That's B-E-K-E-P-E-R-S, N-T-U-R-A-L-S dot com slash skinny or intercode skinny. Start feeling better every day today. Well, first off, I grew up in D.C.
Starting point is 00:31:04 So it wasn't like growing up in Los Angeles where everyone would kind of maybe recognize her. It was a very, very normal life. But at the same time, like you asked her, did you get recognized a lot? We would be in, you know, grocery stores and airports and people would rush up to her, be like, oh my gosh, are you Denise Austin? You saved my life and you helped me get out of my toxic marriage. You helped me, you know, get out of things that I thought I would never be able to do. You helped me grow my confidence. And I think seeing my mom be so happy when she is helping other people really made me, I guess, get in the fitness industry as well. But I think something that my parents really did well was never put too much pressure on me. Like it was never working out to be
Starting point is 00:31:47 aesthetically like six pack or tone booty or lose weight ever, ever, ever. It was more like, let's get involved in athletics. I was an athlete my entire life. So I was my sister. And so I think it was more like let's be strong girls. And something that she also, you did really, really well, is you never focused on my looks ever, ever, ever, ever. I mean, obviously, you'd be like, you look so beautiful, but at the same time, it was like, you're so smart, you're so powerful. You can achieve anything you want to. And I think that was really, really a great way to grow up as well
Starting point is 00:32:16 to not have your mom be focused on your looks and be involved in athletics, but never put too much pressure on me and just making sure I'm healthy in a way that I'm playing sports because I'm strong, working out for my sport and competing in that way. She got athletic scholarship in lacrosse at the university, of Southern California.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Yeah, so that's how I got to LA is I played lacrosse. I was on a scholarship for at USC. Hard worker. Yeah. So, you know, being an athlete in my entire life and having two parents who grew an empire in their own right but support each other, like seeing that has really taught me just like hard work, determination. And, you know, my mom is a very great example of you can achieve anything. And she really believes it. When you put your mind to it, you can achieve it. Well, what I like about both of you guys is that you've created your own future. You didn't wait for someone to come around and tell you, here you can do this or hire you
Starting point is 00:33:05 to do this. Or it sounds like you both have really just paved the way and created what you wanted to create out of nothing. She actually has created so much more than I ever did at this age. No, no, at your age, because you have, you know, so much. She created her own app. She works hard for that. She does, you know, Snapchat show. She does, she has across the board so many things. Mine was just funneled into TV. How I just want to be on TV. You know, it was focused. We're hers.
Starting point is 00:33:36 She has so many interests. She can cook. She could. So it's really cool because she could take it in eight directions. But I think that's also our day and age. You know, I think that's our day and age. Like when you grew up, you didn't have that option or social media. And I think I get a lot of hate online that's like, you know, you're just following your
Starting point is 00:33:53 mom and you're doing, and they compare us a lot. And we're obviously very, very different. That's my number one hate comment. It's wild. or of course Katie's going to be successful in the fitness industry because her mom is such an icon. But I actually just don't think it works like that. I mean, yes, I'm not going to sit here and lie that my last name, Austin, does not help. I was on a call yesterday and was like, oh my God, are you Denise Austin's daughter?
Starting point is 00:34:13 Of course it helps in some ways. But at the same time, a lot of people who are in, no offense to you, or in their 20s and are a little bit younger, Gen Z, actually don't know who Denise Austin is. It's, no offense. I love you to that. But their mom does, but people who I am targeting actually don't. My demographic doesn't. And plus, what I can do in social media is so vastly different than what my mom did with DVDs and VHS is I can't have my fitness TV show run for 30 years. And so it's really, really, really different.
Starting point is 00:34:38 And I would love people to understand that more instead of constantly compare us. You know what's funny, though, I mean, I think about this all the time. Like whenever there's somebody who's had a parent that's had success, right? And whether that's financially from like, you know, celebrity platform, notoriety, whatever it is, you're always inevitably going to get stuck in that comparison. think it's you are rare compared to the majority of people you hear about who completely squander those opportunities. Like you can you can go to any assortment of kids that grew up privileged. And the high majority of those kids either end up fizzling out, fucking up, going over the, like not doing something. Right. So you should be proud of yourself that you are doing something
Starting point is 00:35:14 and that you're taking what your mom's done and furthering it. Right. Like that's the goal, right? Totally. People need to get better with their attacks. I think they need a little more creative. I'm going to be honest. I'm a little bored with this. I think you need to whiteboard. You're going to say that that's the hate comment that you get. It's lazy. I don't think I've ever talked about this. So I grew up with some privilege. Obviously, my dad was successful. And we used to have conversations all the time. We'd drive him and I in the car. And he'd be like, listen, he's like, I am going to take everything that I learned and all the hard work that I've put in. And I'm going to try to share these experiences with you and pass them on to you. And my hope is,
Starting point is 00:35:49 is that you will further, you know, the success that he's been able to have, which is what I'm obviously he'd been trying to do. But he would tell me that time he's like, you would have to be a complete moron to do worse because I'm giving you and telling you, not giving me, but telling you everything that I did that worked and telling you everything I didn't. So if you don't further, then basically you're a fucking moron because I'm telling you what works and what doesn't, right? And I always thought about that. I'm like, of course. Like if I have, now I have children and I'm going to try to give them everything that's work for me and caution against everything that hasn't. And if they don't get a little further, then it's like, to my dad's point, it's like you're kind of
Starting point is 00:36:25 It's your fault. It's on them. It's on them, right? So I always look at those arguments. I'm like, listen, you can go anywhere in the world and compare yourself and find people that are doing worse or better. And so that game becomes a losing game. The idea is that you try to further and get better than where your predecessors and your ancestors were. Like that's the whole point of the world. Yeah. Why not help them to, you know, just teach them. She actually, it came to her more natural, her fitness with me because she really had, when she was little, I used to take them on the road with me. And my oldest daughter, would just find lizards and play. She would stare and watch and stand behind the camera and kind of do it when she was like two or three. She would hang there with the film crew. So honestly, it was kind of in her blood already. And then, you know, she was a lacrosse player, so she couldn't think of anything about lacrosse and studying.
Starting point is 00:37:15 And when she graduated from college, then she came to me and said, you know what? She did a TV show on USC show. And she loved, you know, just teaching. and helping people, and that's how her passion was created. It wasn't like, this is what you're going to do. Sure. You know, I've never even dreamed of it. The tragedy in life, I mean, there's the people who are looking at just like,
Starting point is 00:37:35 well, look what you're doing, look how great you're doing, you're going, going, you had this great mom that taught you all these things and dad. The tragedy would be if people look at you're to complete fuck up, and they're like, man, she had all this opportunity. She has no entitlement type of personality. She's her hardest work you've ever met since she was little. She, everything, she's graduated. from Yos C. Cum Laude. I mean, she
Starting point is 00:37:57 worked really hard. We didn't, you know, she doesn't want a penny from us. She did everything herself. She won't take a penny, not a penny. I need to get my dad on the podcast to talk about how great I am. She is my number one fan. It's so cute. No, but you
Starting point is 00:38:13 made a point. It means something to me. You know, of course. Did I raise someone with character, with integrity, who wants to do it herself? I mean, like me, I want to do myself. And it's pretty cool that you guys are working together and, like, Like right now, how fun is this? It's Tuesday and you can get to work with your mom.
Starting point is 00:38:29 Oh, it's the best ever. It's really awesome. And one last thing, I love the quote. I think being self-aware of our privilege is obviously key, but at the same time is like, my mom can open a door for me, but she can't walk me through it. Sure, that's my point. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:38:42 So I still have to work really hard, and people always ask me, oh, did you get in the fitness synergy because your mom? I actually have no idea because, yeah, sure, it was instilled in me maybe subconsciously since I was little, but I was an athlete my entire life. And so when I quit lacrosse, I didn't know what to do. And I saw all my friends around me don't know, you know, what to do with their bodies
Starting point is 00:38:59 and they're afraid of, you know, the gym because they're intimidated by it. And at the same time, I have a broadcast degree at USC and I did hosting. So I really just combined my love of hosting and my love of athletics into being a fitness personality. Yes, it's exactly what my mom did. But at the same time, I find it my own passion as well in my own right. Good for you. I think, thank you. Who's ever saying that to you, go work on.
Starting point is 00:39:23 something else. Tell them to call you, Lauren. Get busy. The people, I always try to point this out. So, like, say somebody was, say somebody, like, I can acknowledge that I've had some privilege my life, but say somebody is sitting around and they're ruminating and saying, Michael only has X level of success because of X, Y, and Z. My point, that conversation does nothing to me, right?
Starting point is 00:39:42 I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. And I don't even hear the conversations or I block them out. What it does is the person that's having that conversation or telling themselves that narrative about why they're not somewhere where they want to be. why somebody else is, all that conversation is doing is holding them back. So what I try to caution people is like, stop making an excuse about why you're not where you want to be based on where someone else is because that's not stopping the other person. It's just stopping you. So it's counterproductive, right? The idea is like, I want to look at anybody in any walk of life.
Starting point is 00:40:09 I say, wow, that's a successful person. I can do that and I can do more. Like, what's that conversation is like? I want her to be successful in her happiness too. And her relationships, that's more. As you age, I love that even more. It's way more important. And we have a very balanced life. And I think that's also what happened to her. She's very well balanced because living in Washington, D.C., you know, it was the White House was more important. Let me tell you.
Starting point is 00:40:37 Or whatever. But it was a normal upbringing when you think about it. I mean, she was well-educated. D.C. has the best schools. But at the same time, she's, I love her energy and her joy. She has such joy in what she does. Do you want to come to every interview that I do. This is like a trillion.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Why did you guys choose D.C.? Just out of curiosity? My husband was a sports lawyer, and one of the biggest companies in sports marketing in 1983, when we got married, is in Washington. So his sister was number one in the world in tennis. Tracy Austin, she was, she won U.S. Open, youngest ever in the history of tennis. You guys are sporty. Yes. My husband played professionally.
Starting point is 00:41:22 He was also on a tennis athletic scholarship at UCLA. So all four of our little family's been on athletic scholarships. So Katie, what do you do now as your career if you were to describe it to our audience wrapped in a bow? Okay. So long story short, I first worked for Fox Sports West and I did hosting at the Super Bowl. I did NBA awards in overtime and I worked for the NBA. I think about two, three years ago when 2020 really hit, I started to focus more on at-home workouts and created an app.
Starting point is 00:41:53 It's called the Katie Austin app. And I have my own show, Austin A. App. I have my own Snapchat original show called Healthy Hacks. I am a Sports Illustrated swim suit rookie. I just won the competition for Sports Illustrated. I heard congratulations. That was my next question. Go on.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Thank you. I can't want to ask you about that. Yeah, I think my entire thing, like accolades aside or anything of what I actually have, it's more so like making girls feel their best self through workouts and healthy recipes. Sports Illustrated reaches out. to you. Are you freaking? You reach out to them? I auditioned since 2017. I did swim search. So basically it's an online audition. It's a casting. So when I did it, 22,000 girls, I think, 22,000 girls tried out. It was a year and a half long process. And I got the call that I won in October, September of this year.
Starting point is 00:42:44 And I shot in Europe, which was really awesome. I got to go to Montenegro. And the issue releases in May. and so it's really exciting and it's still so crazy to me. Okay, I'm buying an issue. I need to put that on my Instagram story. That must be like a full circle moment for you. Oh, it's beautiful. I never did it. I never had the opportunity or thought of it.
Starting point is 00:43:03 It's awesome. It's fantastic. That's a big accomplishment too. Well, I also like it better than they just called me because I went through the audition process and I went through the ringer to get to where I am and they really had to really know who I am to pick me. And so it feels like very rewarding to go through swim search and be and like win it as a rookie in that way.
Starting point is 00:43:28 All right. You guys are bombarded with a ton of detail, a ton of information on this podcast. That's what we like to do, right? Lauren loves a detail. I love a detail. We want to get all the specifics and all of the information we can possibly get out of the guests that we have on the show. With that, the information can sometimes be overwhelming. We get it.
Starting point is 00:43:44 It's overwhelming for us to it sometimes. But we'd rather have all of that information out there, all of it on the table, and then pick and choose what we think works best. When it comes to supplementation, though, we have talked about so many supplements on this show. If I could only recommend one, I feel like, Michael, I can only get one right now. It's the only thing I can do. I got to just get one. I can't get 50 of them.
Starting point is 00:44:02 I don't have the money. I don't have the time. It's too much. I'm too overwhelmed. I got other shit going on. I get it. It took me a while to figure this out too. I've built the routine slowly over time.
Starting point is 00:44:09 But if it was just one, it would be the athletic greens. It would be the athletic greens for multiple reasons. First, it's a probiotic, it's a prebiotic. It's got all of your essential nutrients. It's got your greens. It's got all of your essential vitamins. It really is the most well-rounded supplement. And what I love about it is it also doesn't break the fast.
Starting point is 00:44:26 The way that I do it as I wake up first thing in the morning, I have a heaping glass of water and I dump a scoop of athletic greens in there. That's starting my day right for my gut health, getting all my proper nutrients, getting hydration, getting the electrolytes, getting everything I need. And it's a great product. It's keto. It's paleo. It's dairy-free.
Starting point is 00:44:42 It's gluten-free. It contains less than one gram of sugar, no GMOs, no nasty chemicals or artificial anything. I take it when we travel. I take it at home. It's literally with me every single day, no matter where I am, all the time. And I also think it's helped fix my under-eye bags in addition to giving me a ton of energy. Can't you hear it in my voice? So check it out.
Starting point is 00:45:01 Like I said, it's the one supplement, the one product that I would recommend if you were just to pick one from this show. And to make it easy, Athletic Greens is going to give you a free one-year supply of immune-supporting vitamin D and five free travel packs with your first purchase. All you have to do is visit athletic greens.com slash skinny. Again, that's athletic greens.com slash skinny to take ownership of your health and pick up the ultimate daily nutrition insurance, athletic greens.com slash skinny.
Starting point is 00:45:29 I would be stupid not to ask you guys your little hacks for food. Tell us about what you eat, both of you, because different ages. I want to know, what does breakfast look like? Are you intermittent fasting? Are you waking up with chlorophyll water?
Starting point is 00:45:45 Like, give us all your little details throughout your day. We are not into anything like crazy, you know, like chlorophy water type things. We're very, very simple. Like you said, simple works, not into intermittent fasting whatsoever. I eat a very, very balanced breakfast.
Starting point is 00:46:00 I usually have avocado sourdough toast. I have a piece of sourdough toast every single day. I don't think fresh local sourdough toast is bad for you. What's your favorite brand? My favorite brand of sourdough toast. It's called Superba. It's local. It's a bakery.
Starting point is 00:46:13 It's a bakery or breadblock if you're gluten-free. And so I have eggs. And then for lunch, I have like a simple chicken salad with some lettuce, again, avocado, healthy fat. I drink a smoothie five days a week, a protein smoothie I love. I have a huge dinner, but I will say this. My biggest thing is never eating after 8 p.m. And so I think once I, you know, I'm not a huge believer intermittent fasting.
Starting point is 00:46:37 I do think it can work in some capacity. But for me, it's just not eating after 8 p.m. And I constantly move my body as well. So the onion rings that I ate in bed last night, at 10.30 was not the move. And the night before, the sourdough that I ate with. Duh. No, but I do that too.
Starting point is 00:46:54 Things are rough right now. No, you know what? I'm just fucking going with it right now. Yeah. When the baby's out where it's time to tighten the lips. I never follow anything
Starting point is 00:47:05 strict or any type of diet. I really just listen to my body and I fuel my body. I literally look at food as an athlete my entire life as fuel. I never look at it as restricting in any way. I was taught to chug
Starting point is 00:47:18 to muscle milks after I lifted. Oh, wow. Muscle milk. That's vintage. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And so that's how, you know, as an athlete, you have to eat so much food. And so that's how I still, I have to switch it a little bit, obviously, but I still eat like that. And Denise? Okay. I eat everything. I love food, but everything in moderation. I eat, well, 80% of the time, and then have my treats 20%. I love red wine. I love beer. I like a hamburger and French fries every once in a while. But I eat a lot of greens. I believe, I put a whole tray, a cookie tray filled. with veggies. I sprinkle it with a little bit of salt and olive oil, I put in the oven, and I could eat that. I always have some form of good protein, obviously. I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And my favorite thing is a good breakfast. I don't do intermittent fasting. I tried it for two days.
Starting point is 00:48:11 I did not like it, but I love to drink my coffee in the morning, do my workout, and then have a nice breakfast. But we always say something. Do you do a form of, like if you guys both, do you stop eating at 8 as well? Well, I believe in eating breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper. So, but if you stop, but do you, do you stop eating at 8 as well? Sometimes I do. Okay. Well, she goes about at 8 at 8 as well, yes.
Starting point is 00:48:37 Hey, listen, I go to bed at 8 o'clock now. Ari, you said you're a fan of red wine. Are you a fan of cocktails? Oh, yes. Oh, my God. Katie makes the best cocktails. I unfortunately drink a lot. I love tequila.
Starting point is 00:48:48 I can't wait. I'm counting down the seconds. I love the lot with a little. I think a huge thing too, really simple and might be obvious for some people, like you said, you love hamburgers and French fries. I think we eat a lot of amazing, you know, food. But at the same time, we portion it. I think that's the biggest thing is like portions. And so if we're going out to dinner together, we'll order the hamburger and fries, but also we'll share it. We'll share it with a salad on the side or with the vegetables on the side. So it is all about the portions. Yes. So like this Mack truck of fruit to my left is like, We need to work on the portions over here. I'm not really eating for two, am I? What about little wellness rituals that you do every single day? Like, whether it's a morning routine or a nighttime routine or something wellnessy that you both do.
Starting point is 00:49:36 And this could be something that you've done since you had your VHS tape. Well, one of the biggest things I do, you guys, is I think about good posture all the time. You are your own architect. By the way you sit up, by the way you stand. So if you have bad posture, your tummy has nowhere else to go but pooch out. But if you have a nice, good posture, sitting up nice and tall, suck in that tummy, be aware of the abdominals all the time. It really works. Feel as though you're wearing like a tight corset, Michael.
Starting point is 00:50:05 No, maybe I am. No, okay. But the key is, is posture plays so much in your health. You're not crushing your organs. You're not letting things slouch and look. excited. Custure is the key to feeling good. The oxygen flows better. You get more oxygen intake through your lungs. Oxygen equals energy. So remember that any time you feel, you know, three o'clock comes around, deep breath, move those muscles, muscles give you energy.
Starting point is 00:50:38 Muscles work miracles on your metabolism. I know all her lines. I also think something you say a lot is if you squeeze your abs for five seconds and then you let go, that's equal to one sit up. Yeah, tighten it like isometrics. Like someone's going to suck in the tummy. Tighten those abs. Five seconds, tight, tight, tight. And then release and then do it throughout the day. And throughout the day I do stretches in my, you know, if I'm sitting for a long period
Starting point is 00:51:02 time on my computer, I get up. You burn more calories when you stand up than you do sitting down. So think about that. So at any time throughout the day, you want to move those muscles. it's all how many 16 hours were awake. How much did you move? Enough people are talking about the pot because you sit so long now. This is not how we're supposed to be.
Starting point is 00:51:26 Jordan Peterson, his 12 rules for life, Michael was telling me the other day, one of them is stand like a lobster. The first one is stand up straight like a lobster. Because lobsters what? Well, there's a good month. I'm going to fuck it up.
Starting point is 00:51:36 I'm going to mess up his whole thing. But his point is he actually like studied lobsters. And he said that lobsters that stand up straight with strong posture actually dominate in the field of lobsters. No way. And it's over periods of time, the weaker lobsters that couldn't stand up straight just get dominated by them. And so more women go to the male lobsters that stand up straight,
Starting point is 00:51:54 more opportunity, more food. Taylor, it's slept over a porn hub right now. Taylor, you've got to sit up straight if you're going to watch the porn hub. But he applied in. He went and studied humans and he actually said humans that stand upright with good posture and walk in a room, like you command more confidence, you get more opportunities, you get more abundance in your life. Oh, I believe in that.
Starting point is 00:52:10 You walk into a room with good confidence and a smile on your face and you feel good. Absolutely. I mean, you're a perfect example of that. Someone also told me, and I'm not like super fitnessy, so I don't know if this is true, that what you said about contracting your abs actually helps prevent dialysis.
Starting point is 00:52:28 Yes. How do you say it again? The split when you're pregnant. And afterwards, you need to, you know, don't do anything twisty after the baby, because that could help split it. Okay. So everything's got to be pulled in. Do pelvic tilts. That's one of the best exercises. Back on,
Starting point is 00:52:44 your back, you know, like a bridge, but just go a little bit. And tighten the badge. It's time to get the kegel in, right? Always, yes. Tighten the tighten the badge. Yeah, lift up right now. Come on. Lift up. Michael, come on. Tighten your dickle. Look great from behind, baby. So here's those bombs. Michael's looking great from behind. He showed me about 600 times in the last two months after he's been working out with this new trainer. But the tightening of the abs does help, like before you have the baby, it does help. It does help. prevent dialysis. I cannot pronounce it.
Starting point is 00:53:17 Retire. Let's call it. D.R. D.R. Whatever. Just splitting of the app. Yeah. Splitting of the app.
Starting point is 00:53:24 Okay. So what do you guys do now working together in tandem? Tell us about what you're working on now. Ooh, together. We do mother-daughter workouts online on my website and on her website and social. And you got me on Instagram. We want to do more together. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:53:42 I think right now, you know, during 2020, when I lived with her, we did so many workouts together, but now I live on my own. And so I really, we want to do more stuff together. And you guys should do more stuff together. And now my focus is fitness over 50. Because we are really in need of health now at this age. And I have a whole new magazine that comes out four times a year. It's quarterly. It's seasonal. This one is coming out. It's the spring issue. It comes out next week. And I'm really excited. It's 100 pages of Denise Austin. all my recipes, all my tips about staying healthy,
Starting point is 00:54:20 menopausal tips to flatten your belly, how to rest better. This magazine sells really well too. Oh, I'm sure. Yes, this is my second year now, and it's in every grocery store, every drugstore. I've seen you every single time I go to the grocery store. I've seen you everywhere.
Starting point is 00:54:37 I feel like you're everywhere. Thank you, sweetie. Still, that's such, that's so amazing that after all these years, the staying power that you've had. had. Like, that's incredible. Forty years this year, I'm celebrating 40 years in the business, and I love it. And I have so much more energy now to do new things for women over 50. And it's more fun to work now because I've got my daughter like, I got to keep going, baby.
Starting point is 00:55:00 How do you guys have so much energy? You guys have like the most energy that anyone that's ever come on the show. And I mean, I'm like, I'm like, what are you, which water are you drinking? It's so funny because people who meet me are like, wow, you're so energetic. and I do have good energy, but then they meet my mom, and they're like, what the hell? You have, like, I actually seem very calm compared to my mom. It's wild. But you know, I think it's, I think it's inspiring because this is the first time. I think maybe this happens when you have children, right?
Starting point is 00:55:26 You like, oh, shit, I need to kind of be here for a little while longer. And I, you know, people, you go through life, like, oh, by the time I'm 40, I can slow down 50, maybe 60 I'll retire, but now I'm starting, I want to be here as long as possible with the most health and energy as possible, right? Absolutely. When you're young, you don't think about these things. You just think it's always going to be here. Right.
Starting point is 00:55:43 I notice it now. I'm like, okay, if I don't take it, if I don't take care of myself, it's not going to be here. I think the audience would die if I didn't ask you both your workout routines.
Starting point is 00:55:55 We have a baby on the way. And this is something I take very seriously. The sheets, the blankets, okay? They got to be organic. They got to be soft. They got to be temperature regulating.
Starting point is 00:56:09 Very important. Cool and comfortable. All of these things, because I feel like we sleep, so much and we're not paying attention enough to what we're sleeping on. We're breathing it in. And especially with a newborn, you want to make sure that you're really paying attention. So the ones that I have thought are cozier. They're softer than cotton. They're made from bamboo fabrics and their temperature regulating. This was very important to me. And you can do a hundred-night sleep test. So when I got
Starting point is 00:56:38 everything I ordered, I was able to like even try it on myself. Like I laid something on my pillow to just breathe it in. Like I was able to try it on myself and just like lay the baby's blanket and I loved it. Okay. I like want to get one for myself. I got the bamboo blanket. Okay. It's a baby blanket. It's on their site. It's breathable. And I am not surprised that Oprah said. And she she quotes this the softest ever. So go on, especially if you have a baby and look up their bamboo blanket. This is also such a great gift. If you're going to a baby shower, they have all kinds of. They have all kinds of kinds of bedding. They have bamboo mattress pads, silk pillowcases. They have a baby collection, like I said. They also have bath. They have all different kinds of things on their site. It's a
Starting point is 00:57:24 beautiful airy site. They have provided an exclusive offer for all skinny confidential, him and her listeners today. It's 35% off site wide. That is a wild, wild discount. 35% off site wide when you use the code skinny, stock their baby collection. And maybe there's silk pillow cases too. Ooh, workout routine. Okay. So I actually actually. only workout for 30 minutes a day. I get kind of a little bit bored. So working out for 30 minutes, meaning I do a lot of like hit and 10 pound weights. Not too heavy weights. I did that in college. And I used to max out lift. And I just enjoy my life better when I do 10 pounds or five pounds. So light weights for 30 minutes, a little bit of hit. And then I always do a 20 minute walk.
Starting point is 00:58:11 So I guess in total 15 minutes of the day, but I usually do a 30 minute workout in the morning and then 20 minutes in the afternoon of a walk. And that's every day. six days a week. Okay. Okay. I walk every single day now and this is how I meet up with my girlfriends, walk and talk and we catch up in life. Pass it multi-task. I love it. Because I want to, you know, catch up with their lives. So then I come back into my house. We live by the beach and I do little yoga. Every day I do a little something different because I believe in changing it up. So I'll do Katie Austin's app. I love her sculpt. Thanks a plug. No, sculpt it. It's a new cardio workout that she has. And it's 24 minutes. It's hard. So I do that twice a week because it's hard. But the other
Starting point is 00:58:53 days a week, I want a little easier. But because I'm, you know, hip 50, ever since I did, I make sure I do lightweights three days a week. I want to keep my muscles toned. I don't want, if you're toned and taught, nothing will droop or sag. Because we have 640 muscles of the body. If we keep them firm and toned, it stays close to your skin and you stay young feeling. In every area. Yes. You want to tighten in every area. That's your baby. It's good for the bones too. Oh, it's great for the bones.
Starting point is 00:59:20 I think that's what's kept me young all these years is a little bit of everything. A little cardio, little toning, stretching, yoga. So mixing it up really helps. When you guys go out together and you're like eating at a restaurant, do people come up to you? Yeah. Lately a lot.
Starting point is 00:59:36 Thanks, Mom. I mean, you always, obviously. But yeah. And I show them what I'm eating too. Here's my hamburger. You should just carry these around with you. No, I mean, I show the food. Oh, you show them the food.
Starting point is 00:59:50 Nachos, yeah, I ordered nachos. Of course I did. I didn't go to get Greek yogurt after this conversation. I got my beer too, cheers. Yeah, the coolest part about my mom, when people meet her, they're always like, oh, my gosh, you're literally just like you are in real life. That's an amazing compliment, especially in 2020. You never know what being catfished means. What do you call in 2002?
Starting point is 01:00:10 I know. I mean, 2020. It's pregnancy brain. I actually catch that. Pregnancy brain. It's real too, so shut up. Yeah, it's real. I'm not catfishing the audience.
Starting point is 01:00:22 If you guys were each to leave our audience with a really positive tip that you've each learned throughout your career, what would it be? We'll start with Katie. Oh, man. I would say be patient. Everything comes with time and kind of trust not to be super cliche, but trust the journey. I think I struggled a lot in my younger 20s. I just turned 28.
Starting point is 01:00:42 And so in my younger 20s, I feel like everything was a rush. I wanted everything tomorrow. And like you see social media stars. They blow up. Trust the journey. You're getting no for a reason. And no meeting has no meeting. So like sometimes like you think a product was a waste time, a job was a waste of time.
Starting point is 01:00:57 And I always wanted things so fast. But be patient and like just trust your instincts because if you believe in yourself, then everything will come to fruition and just be patient about it. Because longevity of your career is key. Longevity? Yes. I'm nice. I'll segue. I just out-yip to you, by the way.
Starting point is 01:01:16 This is like the perfect person to say that in front of it. I feel like, did it on purpose. I'll mute, mom. Thank you. Of course you did. Okay. I think it's just be yourself. Don't worry about what other people say about you.
Starting point is 01:01:27 Just be who you are. And if it, you know, just be who you are. My mom always said that's the dream about having your own life. You know, make it yourself. Make it your own. Do what you want to do. And things will fall into play. I was just listening to Robert Green's podcast or something where he was on.
Starting point is 01:01:46 And he wrote 48 laws of power and laws of human nature. And he said the same thing. He said, no matter what encounter that you're having, make sure you're being, you're being your own personality because that's what's memorable. I have to say, I'm always going to remember both of you. You guys are 100% yourself. It's so true, though, because I love anyone who is so authentically themselves. even if, like, I actually met someone who was, like, very mean the other day.
Starting point is 01:02:12 And I was like, no, but I still like her because she's authentically herself. She never puts out there that she's a very, very kind person. She's like exactly who she is. And so, honestly, I really, you know what I mean? No, I like anyone who is being fully themselves and they don't, you know, let anyone else waver their personality. You know what? You would really like our producer, Taylor, who you met earlier. The other day on Skype Happy Hour, we had a Skype Happy Hour.
Starting point is 01:02:35 Oh, can I come? You can totally. like, bring your red wine and your beer. He was on with about 30 women, and we had to tell a fun fact about ourselves. And Taylor started talking about his baby toe. Stop. Yeah, for about 10 minutes straight.
Starting point is 01:02:50 I don't know what the point of the story was still, but he talked about his baby toe for 20 minutes. And Taylor, you really are yourself. So I think that... Was HR in this meeting? Yeah, HR was taking notes. I would love to do some kind of giveaway with you guys. maybe I couldn't we send your magazine like a signed copy and in your app?
Starting point is 01:03:11 Absolutely a year subscription we can do. Okay. Can we do it like how can we do like a couple people? What do you guys? Absolutely. I could do five. Ten. Let's do ten. Ten. Come on. Let's do it. Don't me, baby. We'll do 10 signed copies of Denise's newest magazine. It's called Fit Over 50. You can give it to your mom out there if you're listening. No, I want to read it too. I mean, this is amazing. Yes. And then we'll do a giveaway with your app. to simultaneously. All you guys have to do is follow both of them on Instagram.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Share your Instagram handles. Denise Austin. Katie Austin. Easy. I like it. And tell us your favorite part of this episode on my latest post at Lauren Bostic. I will. Yes.
Starting point is 01:03:51 Oh, already I will. You're amazing. Michael's so cute, everybody. He is cute. Cute, cute. He's a very, very good husband. I can tell.
Starting point is 01:04:03 Who knows what could have happened in those U of A days in a different way? Too bad. Too bad. Denise didn't get to go to your graduation. I was at your graduation, by the way. I was at your fucking graduation. Did you toss up corn tortillas? I had a interesting scenario where I got out of there early. I graduated a little early. Why did you do that? Why did you do that? Well, Chase and Lawrence. I had to like, I was like, I was like and I got Pella. And then I actually never even, did I even walk? Yes, I went to your graduation. It must have been memorable because Denise wasn't there naked. I don't think I, no, I don't think I walked. He wasn't totally naked. Well, no, she wasn't naked. Hot pink leotard. You know what, though? She's looking, you guys got to Google this. I'll put it on my Instagram story.
Starting point is 01:04:43 She's not naked. She doesn't have her labia out like I'm going to have after I'm done getting good. It's on my Instagram. Oh, it's on her Instagram. Yeah, one of the days. Okay. I'm going to, I'm going to post it on my stories, too. She's not naked.
Starting point is 01:04:53 She's wearing a hot pink bikini. With heels. With heels. And the guys in the background look like they're about to like ejaculate. I got approval by the president. Look at the dean. That's the head dean. The Dean's like, yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:07 The Dean's like Will Sarah and Stepbrothers. I'm laughing so hard. Lauren, you're hilarious. This guy's like, what is going on? They're shocked. They've never seen anything like it. If you guys want to share any kind of code for your app, anything you want to share with our audience, if not, where can everyone find you?
Starting point is 01:05:26 Tell us all the things. All right. At Katie Austin on everything. And I'm at Denise Austen.com and I have subscription-based workouts for ladies over 50. And you can sign up for my newsletter is very popular.
Starting point is 01:05:59 That's free. And my magazine fit over 50 and I love my life. So keep that going. You got to all love your life. Where can I find your pregnancy DVD? Do I just find it on eBay? Like actually where can I find it? I'm not joking. Oh, I don't think it's available anymore. I'm going to find it.
Starting point is 01:06:15 It's really old. Ask my ball. I bet it's out there somewhere. I bet it's out there. I bet it's out there. But how do I get a VHS player? Can you convert it for me? Figure it out.
Starting point is 01:06:23 That should be the answer. If you find it, I'll figure it out. You will. Okay. That's a good husband. You guys are amazing. Come back on any time. I feel like there's so many different directions we could have taken this interview.
Starting point is 01:06:34 and congratulations on both of all your success. And it's so cute, you guys work together. I hope soz is like, I want to be a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. You are and a very successful one. I know, but I want my daughter to do it too. No pressure. I will just say also, sorry, one last thing.
Starting point is 01:06:54 It was really cool because I always wanted to be on the Skinning Comptential. I feel like I have really put it on my vision board and I said for 2022, I gave like my top three things and this was one of them. So thank you guys. I really appreciate it.
Starting point is 01:07:04 for coming on. That's really sweet. That is so sweet. Thank you. Come back anytime. Okay. Stand up tall. Tighten up your tummy. Squeeze those butts. Come on. You don't squeeze it. No one else will. Do you want to win a copy of my book? You should also know it's available on Amazon, Target, and Barnes & Noble. We'll see you next time. One thing that Michael and I drink every single day and I've done through both pregnancies is bone broth. I was going to say the fountain of youth, but yeah, bone broth. Bone broth is the fountain of youth.
Starting point is 01:07:42 And of course, you know, I've talked about this on stories. I always drink owl venice. If I'm ordering it home, this is the bone broth that I like. They carry organic, locally sourced bone broth elixirs. They also have milkshakes and skincare and supplements, all different kinds of things on their site. The bone broth, though, is incredible. So they have this number one seller. It's called the owl reset and it's an organic cleanse program. And this cleanse program is different than anything. I cannot wait to do it after this pregnancy. Basically, it's designed to heal the gut and restore balance. I've noticed if you look at all these cleanse programs, none of them are designed to heal the gut, which is wild. Owl Venice focuses on nutrient dense, herb infused, broth elixers and milkshakes that are packed with ingredients to regulate your digestion. So the whole cleanse is based on healing. And obviously you're going to look tight and amazing. But it also reduces inflammation and draws out toxins. So this is like the go-to cleanse that I will definitely be doing after the baby comes. But their whole entire mission is to pack their broth elixers and milkshakes with nutrients, whole foods, vegetables. Owl Venice has the best bone broth on the market. I'm telling you, order it, try it. I mean, you can add all different kinds of things to it. Sometimes I add noodles. It's so good.
Starting point is 01:09:01 benefits. And exclusively for the skinny confidential listeners, Owl Venice is offering code Skinny at checkout for 15% off. You're going to visit owlvenous.com for more information. Use code skinny and get the bone broth.
