Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. This episode is brought to you by ClearSem. This episode is brought to you by The Skinny Confidential. How fun. Okay, if you've not tried shaving your face, you've got to try it. I've been doing it since I was in high school. And I wanted to create a razor that did everything that I wanted it to do. One that I could reuse because I was sick of throwing away those cheapo razors.
Starting point is 00:00:26 I wanted to create one that had refillable blades. So that's exactly what I set out to do with my team. And then, of course, we have a little thumbprint area, just like the ice roller. It's thick. It's silicone. It looks insane on your vanity. And it has refillable blades. If you're not on board with shaving your face, you got to try it.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Okay. So men, they age a lot slower than women. And that's because they're constantly exfoliating their face with a razor. So what I like to do is I like to shave my entire face. You can go to my Instagram stories. razor and you can see exactly what I mean. I obviously don't shave my eyebrows or my nose really, but I shave my cheeks, my chin, I even shave above my upper lip and a little bit on my forehead. And it just allows your skincare products to penetrate deeper. Your makeup looks glowier and you're
Starting point is 00:01:17 exfoliated. It's so youthful. We have a code for you. Of course, it's pink ice queen in all caps. That is pink ice queen for 15% off the entire TSC website. This is a code for you. This This excludes bundles. We don't do a lot of discounts, but we're doing one today. That is pink ice queen for 15% off. Shop, skinny confidential.com. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you alone for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the Skinny Confidential, him and her. There's a lot of people that come to us that are just so frustrated and debilitated with their health. They need help.
Starting point is 00:02:06 They're feeling bloated. They're feeling tired. They're struggling with acne. And they don't know what to do. And when we hear people's life story and are just able to give them three simple changes, they DM us or reach back out a few weeks later saying how much their life was changed. Their skin cleared up. They're sleeping better. Their bloating went down.
Starting point is 00:02:23 That's what does it. The first thing you put in your body, whether or not you do intermittent fasting or have breakfast or whatever, the first thing you put in, in your body needs to be protein. A lot of people are making things that they think are healthy, like a smoothie. And a smoothie can be healthy or it can be like liquid candy, right? Like if you're putting, it's just like water, some almond milk, and a bunch of fruit that might have nutrients and some fiber and things, but it's also just a straight shot of sugar. And it's the first thing that you're putting in your system.
Starting point is 00:02:48 That's going to cause an insulin spike, set the inflammation cascade, and you're going to be chasing that sugar all day. Welcome back to the skinny confidential him and her podcast. Today, this episode is about acne. Not only acne, we're talking about skin. We're talking about skin care, resources, all the things. But we really zoned in on acne. And I learned so much in this episode.
Starting point is 00:03:14 It was fucking wild. We're interviewing the founders of Clearstem. Danielle and Kaylee, they are so cute entrepreneurs. And they know all the things about acne. The craziest part of this is that I posted Instagram stories like behind the scenes like I always do. And I posted this episode and this got the most shares. I could not believe how many shares that this got. And I think it's because a lot of people are struggling with acne and they don't know where to start. And so they heard these little snippets from this episode.
Starting point is 00:03:48 And just from the 15 second snippets, they picked up tips and tricks to help with acne. Why I also think that this brand clear stem is so amazing is because Kaylee was really a practitioner of acne. She struggled with cystic acne in her mid-20s, and she tried everything to find a cure. And then she met Danielle. And Danielle is known as the acne guru. And she really helped Kaylee throughout the entire process of healing her acne. And I have to tell you, I saw Kaylee in person.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Obviously, we interviewed her. Her skin is clear. It's bright. It's radiant. So it's really cool how this brand started. It's very entrepreneurial. And I have a lot of respect for. what they've built and they know their fucking shit when it comes to acne. I wish I had interviewed
Starting point is 00:04:33 them. Forget the fuck out of the sun. On that note, they're going to be giving you guys a code. You can use code skinny for 20% off your first purchase. Okay. Code skinny for 20% off. Now, if I were to pick something from their site, I would pick the sunny side. It's a brush on mineral sunscreen. It's SPF 50. But I also don't struggle with acne. So hear this episode first if you struggle with acne, but I would check out that sunscreen. It's pretty legit. You can use code skinny, like I said, for 20% off. On that note, let's meet the founders of clear stem. First up we have Danielle. She's known as the acne guru. She is the formulator and CEO of clear stem skincare. It's a non-toxic skincare line that uses premium ingredients to correct acne. And then we have her co-founder, Kaylee. She is
Starting point is 00:05:19 a holistic nutritionist and her health issues started when she was very young, her mid-20s. Like I said, she had acne. She's bent to everyone and anything. No one could figure out what was going wrong. So she took matters into her own hands with Danielle. This episode is super informative. Let's meet Danielle and Kaylee. This is the skinny confidential, him and her. I think I'll just kick it off to let you guys manipulate my husband into getting a brightening ice serum. Well, I don't need much manipulation because you basically told me on the way over here that I just look absolutely terrible. I had a little intervention in the car. This podcast
Starting point is 00:05:56 is really fitting today because he facetimed me from upstairs and you looked like a ghoul. Well, FaceTime is terrible though. It is terrible. What the hell? Can we get a filter? It makes me feel like shit about myself. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:10 It really actually is really fucked up. I'll look in the mirror and then look at a picture on my phone. I'm like, where did those wrinkles come from? Those don't exist when I look in the mirror. Yeah. For everybody listening that's seeing me, I actually look fucking incredible. And if you see a picture of me, it's the camera's fault. I swear I look so damn good.
Starting point is 00:06:26 in person. But this is just a side note. The reason that I like the Snapchat camera so much better than the regular camera is because the Snapchat camera shows you how your face looks in the mirror. And we are more attracted. Everyone is human nature to the way we look in the mirror. It's like a study. You can Google it. I'm not making this up. So when you're FaceTiming, you're not getting that Snapchat mirror look. You're getting the other look, which is the camera look. Does that make sense? Yeah. It makes sense. And you like the Snapchat look. And your camera is, it doesn't capture you in like 3D. So like if you have like lots of angles, like I do like I have a really strong chin and like strong jaw.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Like if it doesn't give you like any 3D perspective, all you see is like the worst angle of yourself. And you're like fuck my life. I'm going to move this closer. You have to get right in there like your. Yeah. My lips are touching it. There's what you want. That's a little question.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Taylor might want a bono. You know what? They fucked up this table in here because there's another one that's we just moved into this. We just opened this office. So you guys are like some of the newer. ones in the studio. Love it. And it's supposed to extend all the way to hear, but because of that.
Starting point is 00:07:32 So basically, we don't need your whole life story. Okay. So we don't need to be very, very close to the table. Okay. So what product would you recommend just while I have you to manipulate Michael? I'm going to go with the eye brightening serum to Michael with these under eye bags. A thousand percent bright eyes. Like the name says it all.
Starting point is 00:07:51 But I thought. So dark circles. I don't know if I like that you just said a thousand percent. I'm feeling even more insecure. No, thousand percent this. You're already great looks. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
Starting point is 00:08:00 I need a lot of help, guys. A lot. Okay. So you would recommend the eye brightening serum. Yeah. I mean, everyone needs an eye product for sure. And everyone's got different concerns around their eyes, whether it's like fine lines, dark circles, puffiness.
Starting point is 00:08:15 But when you are master formulators like we are, you can create a product that tackles all of them. So this one is specifically to help people get rid of dark circles and prevent fine lines because the ingredients, in it are just like super targeted for that and we put a lot of concentration in them. So it gives you instant results because of like the caffeine. It just kind of like stimulate circulation and just like gives you that like lifted kind of awake look. But then it also is actually fixing things. So you'll notice a difference in like four or five days. I love caffeine and skincare products. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Yeah, it is amazing. I want to go back before you guys were doing what you were doing. And I want to talk about your experience with acne. And maybe you each. can talk about, I know you each have had an experience with it, when you first noticed something, even if it was like when you were, you know, 10 years old, what, what did that look like? I didn't get horrible, horrible acne until college because I was such a tomboy growing up and I played competitive soccer. So I was like working out and sweating the whole time and never wore makeup or anything and just never really did anything. And when you're sweating that much, you can kind of like, your skin's like detoxed, if you will. But then I got to college,
Starting point is 00:09:25 stop playing sports, started drinking alcohol, got on some shitty birth control that was the wrong kind of birth control for acne, then started wearing a bunch of makeup, eating horrible dorm food, and it was just the perfect storm. So my acne came like a freight train right when I was like 18 and just got to college. Everyone talks about acne and how you, you know, you look in the mirror and how it's really hard and all these things. But what does it do internally? Like, meaning like, does it make you feel insecure when you're talking to someone like this? Like really explain, Acne is not something I have struggled with. I've struggled with other things like hyperfigmentation.
Starting point is 00:09:58 That's a different story. But what does acne do to like your social life? Oh, it can really devastate your social life and your psyche. So nature's way of rewarding you for hygiene is to stimulate dopamine. So like think of like monkeys when they're cleaning each other, like the high that you get when you clean your house. Like nature's biological way of rewarding us for hygiene is to make you feel good about yourself and release dopamine. But when you're actually doing those things like washing your face and tending to your skin and all you see is acne, the reverse effect happens. So it can be really devastating psychologically.
Starting point is 00:10:29 I got to a point where I didn't want to leave my house. Like I dealt with acne on and off as a teenager. Just like your typical teenager acne, I got proactive. It dried the crap out of my face. I went to the dermatologist. They gave me like a heavy cream that just made it red and peeling. And it was awful. But it got rid of my acne for a few years on and off in college, but nothing crazy. And then when I hit 24 years old, my skin broke out everywhere in bright red cystic acne. Like, out of note, I had never dealt with cystic acne in my life, only like occasional pimples here and there. It was so bad that there was months I didn't want to leave my house. I was packing on.
Starting point is 00:11:06 I ordered, like, the theater makeup that the Miss America pageant girls use. It's like clay. It's like literally putting clay on your face just to try to cover it up because it was bright red. It was thick. It was bumpy. And, like, that's the only time I would leave the house. Luckily, I had a job at the time where I was working from home. And so there's a period of three months where I didn't see like any friends go to any social events because I felt I felt so embarrassed because my background's in nutrition too.
Starting point is 00:11:32 And I was like, what's wrong with me that I can't like I can't get control of my health? What is going on internally? Because I couldn't I couldn't get to the root cause. And I almost won on Accutane. Like it got so bad. But I'd research Accutate. I knew how bad it was for your liver, for your hormones, for your mental health. you have to sign all the waivers saying it's connected to depression and increased anxiety.
Starting point is 00:11:53 I was in the process because you have to get pregnancy tests before you get it done because it causes birth defects. And so I took the first pregnancy test and I had to take another one like 30 days later. And during that 30 days, I'm like there has to be another solution. Like there has to be a root cause to this. Something is wrong with me. Something's going on in my body. And one last Google search is when I found Danielle's Clinic, San Diego Acne Clinic. And that's where we cleared my skin in two months with no scarring, nothing. No redness, no pigmentation, no scar damage, anything. Do you guys think that the reason that you've been able to be such a practitioner with acne is because you had the acne? Yeah, because everyone that works for us at Clearstem has dealt with
Starting point is 00:12:35 acne before because it's so important to us. We connect with our community a lot in the DMs, over email. Like, that's how we've built our company is by connecting with the consumer so much. And when people tell their life story, their acne life story, and they're like, I didn't leave my house for years. I was so, like, I was so embarrassed. I, I would cancel job in our views. I would cancel events. I would cancel dates because of it are us, both Danielle and I and I and our team can empathize and we can be there for the community and then help find them a root cause because Danielle and I each had our own healing journey of finding that root cause of acne, like what was causing it. It wasn't just one thing. I had like 12 different root causes going on,
Starting point is 00:13:10 but it allows us to help empathize with other people and help them find the root cause. And we've built an entire, like an education section of our website of how to heal acne internally and externally outside of just products. So we can truly help people heal their skin, not just use a Band-Aid approach. I'm going to ask you maybe a stupid question, but I'm just thinking about it. Do men typically get acne earlier than women? And I'm assuming that obviously hormones is some kind of reason. Taylor has acne by his penis. The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking back, as you mentioned, like acutane and proactive.
Starting point is 00:13:42 And I remember being like 12, 13, myself having like acne and using those. It was like the green bottle, right, with the white. And then like a lot of my friends did, but this was early. I mean, by the time we all got to college, the majority, at least of men in my life, we weren't like, I don't think we're dealing with acne. So I'm just wondering. Yeah. So women tend to get it more often.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Men tend to get it worse. So women will generally get, we tend to get it around the same age. Boys will start to get it a little bit sooner from what I've noticed in my clinical practice because the testosterone that teenage boys have as they start to enter pubes. testosterone is the main hormone that will cause an acne flare up. It's what makes you produce more oil. It's what makes you sweats a little bit stickier. So males just generally have more of that. So that will start with males. And depending on how acne prone you are, which is genetic, it can start at like age 10. So it'll start with boys a little bit sooner. But then as soon as girls start getting
Starting point is 00:14:32 their period, between the ages of like 11 and 13, that's when it kind of starts for them. Now, depending on how much sugar that kid is having, it'll be better or worse or start a lot sooner. But yeah, so men tend to get it worse and they can get more like really aggressive body acne, again, because of the testosterone. But women tend to get it for longer. Like women will break out well into their 40s. And a lot of it has to do with the stuff we're putting on our skin. Like every time you put a lotion on or a makeup or anything that has a poor clogging agent, that's a chance to start the acne cycle. Men use fewer products.
Starting point is 00:15:03 So they're way less likely to deal with that ongoing cycle. That makes total sense. So when you guys were young, you didn't know each other. you met when you were struggling with acne. Is that how you found her? Yeah, what, like, luckily Danielle had been, like, running ads on San Diego Acne Clinic because she wasn't running up. No, I didn't run any ads. There was something that popped up because she wasn't popping up on my first Google searches. And then all the sudden, like, SEO was kicked in. Yes. And she popped up on my Google search. I'm like, all right, this is my last resort.
Starting point is 00:15:32 I'll try this before I do Accutane. And I go in and I just so happen to be her last client of the day. So she had a lot of time to spend with me. We spent like three hours together. She had me bring in every hair product, makeup product, and skincare product I was using, and supplements that I was using. Because there's a lot of supplements that are even really healthy, but in excess trigger acne. And so I learned all about poor clogging ingredients, even the healthy ones like coconut oil, algae, shay butter. I learned about the excess supplements that I was taking that were triggering my acne. The makeup I was using, the oils I was using on my skin, because there's acne safe oils
Starting point is 00:16:05 and non-acne safe oils. And so I just, I learned there was 12 different triggers going on, which is a treatment on my skin. I follow the exact protocol and my skin was literally clear in two months. And this was after going to every doctor, dermatologist, multiple estheticians, every doctor was like, go on acutane, go on birth control, go on antibiotics. That's the only answers I was given. I wasn't asked about diet, stress levels, sleep, supplements, skin care products, gut health. That is crazy. Any of that. No one said here's a probiotic. No. And they still don't say that today. Most of of them don't. Do you want to see the before and actor, before and after an actor of Kaylee's skin?
Starting point is 00:16:44 Wow. And can we post this so the audience can see this? Absolutely. It's on our website too. But like this was literally in less than two months and then the scar damage was gone too. Like even if you were to start Accutane, you can't do it that quickly. Acutane makes it way worse for like three months and then there's all these side effects. Can you go on a tangent on Accuton? Yeah, I want to know. Oh, I can go on a rant. Yeah, let's go on a rant. This episode will run long. Just because I think a lot of people like that's a solution that's presented to many people. That is the only solution. Let's discuss acutane.
Starting point is 00:17:11 I had to do it three times and my acne still came back. Hold on. What is acutane? Accutane is a gnarly synthetic version of vitamin A that is, it's like a genetic mutation of vitamin A that they made water soluble. Normally vitamin A is fat soluble. So it has to be converted in your body. It has to go through a couple processes before it actually becomes active or bioavailable,
Starting point is 00:17:36 if you will. But they made acutane like a super mega dose of vitamin A that's water soluble. So it hits you really, really, really intensely. The goal of it is to make your skin shed so much that the skin cells that are kind of contributing to the clogged pores are just basically being purged so quickly that they can't clog you up anymore. It also affects hormones. That's why it creates a lot of depression in teenage boys. It creates a lot of depression and a lot of people that use it, but it really affects teenage boys because it's also acting on the male hormones. Because again, testosterone and androgens are generally the hormones. that trigger the most acne. So it's basically taking the batteries out of all the fire alarms
Starting point is 00:18:11 and hoping to change your skin in such a strong way that you don't get acne anymore. That's how it's positioned a lot of the time. But for most people, the acne totally comes back. And they have a ton of side of X. And the root cause, especially if the root cause has to do with gut or digestion, acutane makes it worse. And a lot of people have issues with their liver. Their liver is, you know, it detoxifies your body. It helps to quarterback the detoxification of hormones. and the conversions of estrogens and all these things. And most people ignore the liver until there's something very, very wrong. So if that's contributing to your acne, acutane will make that worse.
Starting point is 00:18:45 So that's what happens to a lot of us. We do acutane. Our acne comes back and the root cause is worse. Wow. If you're a mom or you have a hypoglycemic partner, I am here to help you out. That's it. Okay? I am telling you, that's it has the best snacks.
Starting point is 00:19:07 They have my favorite fruit bars on the planet. my favorite is the pineapple. It's one ingredient, you guys. It's literally just pineapple. It's 100% real fruit. So what I do with Zaza is I'll get one of those bars. I'll roll them into little balls and then I'll give Michael another bar. They also have these kids apple crunchables that I have been talking about for the last two years. I have them in my car. I have them in my stroller. I have them in my handbag. I have them everywhere just in case Zaza has a meltdown or Michael has one. And all that is, is, is a is one ingredient. It's just apple. There's so much shit on the market. So to have something that just is straightforward with their ingredients is amazing. And the crunchibles are like these organic apples that are crisp to perfection. And the crunchibles are like these organic apples that are crisped to perfection. So there's no added sugar, no preservatives, no weird ass ingredients that you would normally find in a lot of these fruit snacks. So that's the move. You've got to get the pineapple bars. Trust me. It's my favorite
Starting point is 00:20:11 fruit bar and then the apple crunchables. Keep them everywhere. If you have a hypoglycemic partner or you you get hypoglycemic or a kid, you got to try them. You are going to go to that's it fruit.com and use code skinny to get 25% off your order. They're giving our listeners an insane discount. Use code skinny for 25% off your order at that's it fruit.com. You touched on something earlier saying that and basically pointed to things that people think are healthy that may be causing us. I think maybe can you elaborate or go and into detail there because there's a lot of people I think listen to this that probably are doing some of these healthy practices that don't realize that they could be contributing to.
Starting point is 00:20:53 This is my favorite thing to talk about because I live in the health and wellness world. It's a huge passion of mine. But the devil's always in the dosage of things. So as far as supplements, B12, vitamin D, zinc, all trigger acne in excess. So B12 stimulates testosterone. Good rule of thumb is anything that speeds you up, break. you out, caffeine, B12, or one of them. In B12, you could drink a Celsius that has, gosh, 30,000 of your RDV of B12. You could be taking a multivitamin that also has it in it.
Starting point is 00:21:28 You could be taking a neotropic supplement that also has it in it. It could be drinking just another juice or soda that has it added, because everyone just adds B12 to anything. So you could be taking close to like 80,000 percent of your recommended daily value of B12. That's going to stimulate testosterone. You're going to break out around your goate. area. So I guess the granular tip there is you got to look at the dosage of the D12. Yep. Absolutely. Yeah. Zinc in vitamin D, amazing. So healthy. Both of those, also in excess are going to trigger acne. Vitamin D is something that's prescribed to men as they get older for low T. It's like wildly known in the science world that vitamin D stimulates testosterone.
Starting point is 00:22:05 For women, we don't want to stimulate excess testosterone unless a doctor says differently, but we don't want to stimulate testosterone. That's going to cause an imbalance of our estrogen and progesterone also causing us to break out. So with a lot of different supplement protocols that people are given for their immune system, they're getting really vitamin D happy and they're thinking more is better when in reality vitamin D is great, but just taking 100 to 200% of your recommend daily value is fine. People are taking 5,600,000, 2,000. Especially now.
Starting point is 00:22:35 Yeah, exactly. Same goes for zinc. They're like popping it like candy because it's like the more the better, the more the better. My immune system's going to be strong. But again, your body can only process so much. vitamin D is fat soluble, it gets stuck in your body. So most people don't even need to take a vitamin D supplement every day because it stays in your system for a few days. So we're just overdoing it with these healthy supplements and healthy products and our body's getting way too overwhelmed
Starting point is 00:22:57 and it's causing a hormonal imbalance. So people might be breaking out being like, oh, my hormones are imbalanced, but not know there is a root cause of that hormonal imbalance. And it could be as simple as changing out your multivitamin or reducing your intake of vitamin D, zinc, B12, biotins, huge one that breaks people out too. I also think that people should be suspicious about what is in the gel capsule around the vitamin. I don't think that that's talked about enough. Sure, the vitamin might be so pure inside and it might be fucking amazing, but the outside of it, that coating, there is so many. I think that's why you go to look for a good, like the one that's just like with good GMP, good manufacturing practices, right? Like you got to have good supplements. Well, we know yours
Starting point is 00:23:39 is good because your nails have never been longer. They're like acrylics. But I think like if it's a good, I think that's less of it and more about making sure that the supplements that you're getting are what they, what the manufacturers are saying they are. Yes. Like they're bioavailable. Yeah. Like we only buy supplements from certain brands. And we don't even bother going outside those brands because we know, yeah, good manufacturing process. We trust. What's your favorite brand? Solarase, a big one. So if someone has acne and they're struggling with pimples, that's the one that you would recommend. Yeah. Solar rays like a good overall brand that, Now Foods is also insane too.
Starting point is 00:24:11 They've been around for like 60 years, family owned. They're able to get lower prices because they've been around for so long and just know everyone in the industry. So they're another really trusted brand as well. And then there's some newer ones coming out that are just do an insane amount of testing and are just so passionate about making sure every part of that supplement is good for you. The outside coating, what's in it, the quality, fat soluble, water soluble, how it's like binded with other vitamins.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Like, there's some really good companies out there. Yeah. I really like symbiotica because it's liposophobic. Yeah, liposomal. Yeah. I like that. I like how when I wake up in the morning,
Starting point is 00:24:47 I squirt my B12 in my mouth, like a porn star. And like, that's what you think? Every morning. That's what you think when you take that? Yeah. You don't think that when you're squirting
Starting point is 00:24:57 that in your mouth. I don't teach the day. That's the last thing I feel like it's like little practices that make up to the big success. So you should be happy. Every morning, I squirt my mouth. stuff in my mouth.
Starting point is 00:25:07 I think you should let Michael squirt it in your mouth. You can squirt it in my mouth tonight. But another thing that I found, which is so crazy, you guys said something so smart. You said you have to look at what you're consuming as well. And one thing that I've seen so many health practitioners push on Instagram is powdered peanut butter. Ew. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Starting point is 00:25:28 It's like PB and like the powdered peanut butter. We actually have it in our. If we have it, I haven't. Okay. Exhibited it. Okay. So peanuts are not good for you. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:37 So powder peanut butter, actually I've heard from a lot of people in my DMs who have had acne is something that is a secret thing that really triggers. Oh, peanuts are like one of the only nuts that I even ask people about. They literally are androgenic. So they have an impact on your hormones where it raises the male hormones that cause acne. Also, it's a ton of omega-6, which we already have way too much of. It's an inflammatory oil. There's like no.
Starting point is 00:26:05 omega-3, no omega-9, I don't think. But anyway, way too much omega-6 in the peanuts. And just the inflammation that comes from them, you can tell if it's going to break you out. Because if you're acne-prone, things that you eat in your diet are going to get you within 24 to 48 hours. So you'll know. So what do you switch it out with almond butter instead? It's better. almond butter is okay. Macadamia is the healthiest nut for sure. I'm really happy about that. It's the healthiest nut. It's sort of a huge bag of those. You did? Yeah. Because I get hungry. What about? What about it's great. A lot of. A lot of Raw Brazilian nut. Oh, love a good raw Brazilian nuts. There's some selenium. I told you to do that.
Starting point is 00:26:42 You can't do too much Brazil nuts though because it can affect your thyroid if you have too many. I think for you, go nuts. Yeah. Yeah, your thyroid's perfect. So you can throw those nuts in your smoothie. So if we want to get a nut butter, the macadamia nut is the best, especially for acne. I think it's the best for everyone because it has no omega-6. Okay. And we get so much of that just in like the shitty, you know, shitty. oils that they use. When you go out to a restaurant, they're still using like canola oil or corn oil, oil, stuff like that. So at your, in your home, when you're buying these things, you've got to make sure that you're eliminating anything that has omega-6 because you're already getting way too much
Starting point is 00:27:16 of it when you're outside your home. So from your perspective, if there was, let's let's like the top three things that cause mass outbreaks of acne. I know there's a lot. I love that question. Your top three. Okay, the top three ones in order of shock value, eggs. Number one, eggs. Eggs are a tricky. That's devastating news. I know. But you, hold on. You don't have to worry about eggs. You eat eggs every day.
Starting point is 00:27:40 You're not acne prone. She's talking about to acne prone. Yeah, but I'm thinking about the, listen, I'm a very empathetic person on. I love everybody that listens to this show. I don't want them to not be able to eat eggs, right? Everyone loves eggs, right? You can have a flocks egg. We do recommend cutting them out for a little bit and then bringing them back in every once
Starting point is 00:27:55 while. So, like, that was my biggest, one of my biggest acne triggers. I was making egg bowls every single morning. This is devastating news, guys. This might be some of the worst news we've ever gotten on the show. I'm so sorry. It's shocking, too, because if you look at the new tree, label of an egg. It looks great. It has some
Starting point is 00:28:07 vitamins in there and it looks like it's just pure protein. And that's what the nutrition label shows you. What it doesn't show you is the type of protein, the albumin protein that makes up an egg is notoriously hard to digest. Proteins that don't get digested well clog up and inflame your lymphatic system. So it creates happiness. My lymphatic system is completely fucked. Dr. Darrell told me and I eat a shitload of eggs. This is hard to take. I'm changing your life right now. This news is hard to take. You do eat a lot of eggs.
Starting point is 00:28:32 I just had four before we came here. Stop feeding Zaz. eggs everyone. Okay, you're, your dark circles that you're a little concerned about that aren't that bad, but that you're concerned about, they will probably improve once you cut out eggs because this, right here, this area, your lymphatic inflammation will darken your eyes. This is almost on the level of somebody, like, a family member passing away. Oh, my God. Just cut him out for a little wild. This is devastating news. Anyways, that would have been an extreme example. Michael's crying right now. I have so many clubs that I'm going to pull if you fuck with me. Hopefully everyone in my family is okay, but God, this is, okay. So that's number one.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Yes. What's number two? If number two is close to as number one, I might have to walk out of studio. Okay. Don't cry any more than you already are. But dairy, dairy is. No, he doesn't care about dairy. So dairy.
Starting point is 00:29:15 He doesn't like white things. Okay. Derry is loaded. It's horrible for most of us for so many reasons. But triggers and insulin response. It's insulinogenic. And it also is loaded with something called insulin-like growth factor hormone. It's literally messenger hormones from a big hairy mama cow to her baby cow.
Starting point is 00:29:34 to her baby cow, and we're eating that. That is just wrong if you think about it from a biological perspective, right? Not only the lactose in it is inflammatory for a lot of people. Almond milk. It's my first. There's a million alternatives down.
Starting point is 00:29:47 What are you doing? Roll it around with almond milk here. She's thirsty. I have almond milk in my purse. Go on. I'm not, I can't with milk. I'm going to pour some of that in my tea in a minute. Okay, so dairy, I mean,
Starting point is 00:29:58 you shouldn't be having dairy past the age of like five or six anyway, but we drink it well into adulthood. Guys get this a lot because they want to bulk up and the first thing guys do is go get way protein. I always find it very strange when adults pull out a giant glass of milk. It's weird, right? It's weird. I find it very strange. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:30:14 It's bizarre. I think they have mommy issues. They do. No, that's been proven. Yeah, it hasn't been proven. But I agree with you. It's strange. It's strange.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Way protein will get a lot of people because it's mixed into shit that you would never normally think you think you're getting a protein bar. Great. Protein's fabulous. It says it has nuts and berries and antioxidants. Boom. You think you scored. Flip it over and it's way protein isolate.
Starting point is 00:30:33 it. That's doing something to your hormones that you didn't bargain for when you bought that thing. And when guys are trying to bulk up at the gym, they go get way protein. And that's when you get gnarly bodybuilder back acne. And it just like, it just can be an eruption in your face. And you'll know because as soon as you stop, you'll see your reduction in inflammation within 48 hours. So guys come and see you in your practice and you can almost instantly, if it's that type of immediately. You know what's interesting? Just a little tangent before we get to three. There is a pasta that everyone knows the brand of that I'm not going to call out that's bunny. pasta. You just called it out. Literally, you just literally. I looked at the ingredients when I was
Starting point is 00:31:09 feeding the baby at the other day because she loves it and there's way in it. And let me tell you, Dr. Gundry came on this podcast. This is super interesting that you're talking about way and he said, if you want to age, eat way. Yep. And you are so right about way being hidden in so many different foods. I think that is such a good tip for people struggling with acne is to really look if they're eating way. Symbiotica is so legit. We had the founder, Chervine on. He broke down every single high-quality bioavailable ingredient. It is the most advanced delivery system of supplements. When I am pregnant, because you guys are snapping me about it, I am taking three packets a day. I'm doing the vitamin C, it's liposomal, and then I'm doing the organic mushrooms. And I like to do
Starting point is 00:32:04 those in the morning because they give me energy. And then I'm doing the magnesium packets. And every single time I pull these packets out, Zaza like pulls them out of my hand. She wants to try it. So I'll give her a little tiny bit of the packet. I even put the organic mushrooms on her apples this morning because it's chocolate. It tastes like chocolate. And she like loves it. So you definitely have to check out those three packets. Michael is such a fan of this line. He has like every single product. You won't shut the fuck up about it. But you should know they have D3 with K2 in it, Sheila Geat, which is the liquid gold. They have adrenal super tonic. They have omegas, all the things. But these are biodynamic health supplements. And I just love how they come in little packets.
Starting point is 00:32:51 They taste really good. They have minerals. And everything is about your memory, your immunity, anti-inflammatory. But all of their products are amazing antioxidants. And I'm telling you, they help improve your memory, immunity, inflammation, and energy. It was so cool to pick the founder's brain. He really is providing the top of the line supplements here. That's what I would get, like I said, the vitamin C, the mushrooms, and the magnesium. That's the move. You can use code skinny at checkout for 15% off your purchase.
Starting point is 00:33:22 That is code skinny at checkout for 15% off your purchase. This is in addition to custom bundle discounts so people can get like 45% off. You can create your custom bundle at symbiotica.com to get 30% off. That's C-Y-M-B-I-O-T-I-A.com. Yeah, do not look at the front of the packaging where it says gluten-free, like all the different things, turn it over, look at the ingredient deck. This just happened to us in the airport. We were like starving and looking for a snack.
Starting point is 00:33:55 And Danielle handed me something real quick while she was like, something out. She's like, can you just check the ingredients on this real quick? And I looked at it. I'm like, threw it back in her. I was like the first ingredients way. And it looked so outside the package. packaging looked so healthy. The marketing was amazing. What was this type of food so we know? It was like a protein bar type thing. Like almond butter chocolate protein bar thing.
Starting point is 00:34:14 It just looked so healthy. Like it on the front looked so healthy. Like we just tell people like, you can market and make it something look as healthy as you want it to. You can flip over the ingredient deck. It can have 40 ingredients, 10 different types of sugar alternatives starting with weight protein, weight protein isolate. It can have like 10 different versions of that. Google like what names are in way. If I had, really bad acne, I think that that's exactly where I would start is really examining what I was eating with way. I like that tip. What's three? Number three is going to be, you mentioned it, pasta gluten. Gluten is a huge thing that is destroying the health of so many people. It affects
Starting point is 00:34:51 people's thyroids. They're just starting to find more research on that. It affects leak. It creates and affects leaky gut syndrome. And it literally is the thing, the primary thing that breaks out, I would say, based on my clinical practice, about 30% of people, once they cut out gluten, their skin is drastically improved. Even if people think, quote, think that gluten isn't giving them any issues. They're like, oh, I feel fine. I can have a sandwich. It does the same thing to everyone in everyone's body.
Starting point is 00:35:15 It goes into your, you digest it. It goes into your gut, into your intestines. It boars tiny little holes in your intestines to allow it to separate and permeate. And then it allows additional food to leak out into your bloodstream, which causes additional inflammation, which leads to other allergies. So you start to eat random foods like strawberries and feel bloated. when strawberries are so healthy. And you start to eat all these other healthy foods
Starting point is 00:35:37 and start to get really sick, really bloated. But the core root cause is the gluten causing that permeability, that separation in the intestines. It allows food to get out in the bloodstream that's not supposed to be there. And that's immediate inflammation. Yeah, and you don't have to be celiac in order to have the inflammation.
Starting point is 00:35:53 Non-celiac gluten inflammation is for sure a thing. It's literally an anti-predation element of the wheat to stop predators from eating it. It's meant to upset stomachs as its survival mechanism. Let me ask you this. Say that there's somebody who's not as evolved as you three. I include you learned. I'm going to pick on myself.
Starting point is 00:36:10 When it comes to figuring out how to get, because gluten's a huge part of everybody's life, right? You go to restaurants, at grocery store. It's like it's everywhere, right? We don't have a lot of gluten in our house. You think the sourdough we have is gluten-free? No, no, but I'm saying in practice, I'm thinking about if I'm just running around.
Starting point is 00:36:23 When you go to mom and dads, there's gluten. If I didn't, it's like the gluten heavens. Yeah. But I think that's a lot of people. And if I didn't have you, I'd probably just be eating a shitload more gluten. But my point is, is what, If you just wanted to start not cutting it out completely because I think that's hard,
Starting point is 00:36:36 but starting to get on the path to limit it and have a substitute. Like, where do people start? Can I just say my one tip? Bread seriously has the best gluten-free sourdough and gluten-free raisin bread. That is so good. If you Google the skinny confidential sourdough, it'll pop up. And it's like homemade sourdough. And it's totally worth ordering.
Starting point is 00:36:58 Sure, but that's one. That's a little one. No, you guys give, I want like little tips. It doesn't need to be a big tip. I think it does need to be a big tip because when I hear, and I'm not as involved as you guys, cut gluten. I'm like, cool, bread seriously, that's one thing for one piece of bread. Lental pasta. I was just saying, lentil's my favorite.
Starting point is 00:37:15 There's a lot of people that hear it. I think it just goes over the head. You're like, I'm not going to switch out 18 things. So give us all the little swapouts. Yeah. So, I mean, think about it. You're probably eating bread, pasta, maybe wraps. Cereal.
Starting point is 00:37:27 I categorize. Tortillas. Yeah. Some oats. You have to check your oats. I'm trying to think what else would be. Those are like the big ones and cereal is a big one. So going to the,
Starting point is 00:37:37 yeah, tortillas. So like going back to the bread, there's some amazing alternatives now. I mean, the one that you mentioned, Lauren, barely breads a really good one. So that one's pretty taking care of. So just swap out your bread as far as pasta next, lentil pasta is phenomenal. Like I've cooked some amazing lentil pasta for friends that do not know the difference. There's just some little tricks to cooking it. There's some tricks.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Lauren, Lauren, I, you have to undercook it and then rinse it really quickly in cold water. You better start doing that because I had this other other day. I had tolerant pasta. Yes. That's the brand. I maybe didn't cook it. It's a little hard. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:11 It tasted like chalk. Mine's a little hard. You're going to have to tell me that tip again. I put it. I take it and I undercook it and then I put it in water. Yeah. And then just rinse it off like in a colander, rinse it off in cold water. And then I love adding either a little bit of ghee butter or olive oil and a little bit of salt before I do anything else with it.
Starting point is 00:38:29 I do. I mix in a little bit of that first and then I do the sauce. She just throws this. shit at me and says, well, I'm the type of person. It's like, let's get, I'm hungry. Let's get it in. Like, let's go. Yeah, you're like juice it back up with an oil or a, or a ghee butter. Yeah. That brings like the flavor. I'm not juicing it back. You're not juicing anything over there. We're just eating chocolate or d'i. The baby eats my lentil pasta every day. Yeah, no wonder she wants to get over three seconds. She's like, I got to get out of here.
Starting point is 00:38:52 No, but lentil pasta, you can also get like the long skinny noodles too. Lental pasta is fantastic. That's a great one. It's so good. I actually recently love kelp noodles. but there is a trick to kelp noodles too because normally they're like weird and crunchy. But if you rinse them off and do a squeeze of lemon and a little bit of baking soda, toss it around and then rinse it off again, it literally tastes like angel hair. Are you writing the stone?
Starting point is 00:39:15 Straight up angel hair. I'm in a right of town. It is, I've been doing that nonstop because it takes five minutes. Kelp pasta. Yeah, kelp noodles. Kelp noodles. You put it in a colander. Squeeze of lemon, a little bit of baking soda.
Starting point is 00:39:28 You just let that like mix it up with your hands, let it sit in the colander for a couple minutes while you do. do whatever else you need to do in the kitchen. Rinse it off really well. They are so soft like angel hair. This is great advice because sometimes I see her cook and I'm like, well, it looks like I'm going to have sleep for dinner. And I mean, it's like.
Starting point is 00:39:43 Yeah. You know what? Go eat your eggs with way on them. Literally get the fuck out of my kitchen with your fucking weigh and your eggs and your. This is great. This is good advice. The egg thing I'm going to honestly, I have to go to my therapist about this. You're going to have to move on.
Starting point is 00:39:57 We're going to need egg before and after. This is devastating. Danielle, what are little tips that people can swap out. their kitchen for promoting glowy skin. Oh, gosh. I would say when, so avoiding those three things, especially in excess, like if you are breaking out and you're like, what's going on with my skin and you only have eggs like once or twice a month, that's probably not the biggest thing. Look and see what you're having the most of, you know, gluten, dairy eggs and then eliminate the thing that you're having the most of. And then make it fun. Nobody wants to be told they have to give up their favorite stuff and
Starting point is 00:40:27 it's just this list of things you can never do again. That's not sustainable. What you do is, okay, if you're trying to get rid of dairy in your life, go and try every non-dairy yogurt and all the oat milk ice cream and the macadamia milk and all the things and just have your own little fun taste test with it and find new favorites. That way it's fun and it's going to be more sustainable.
Starting point is 00:40:45 The first thing you put in your body, whether or not you do intermittent fasting or have breakfast or whatever, the first thing you put in your body needs to be protein. A lot of people are making things that they think are healthy like a smoothie and a smoothie can be healthy
Starting point is 00:40:56 or it can be like liquid candy, right? Like if you're putting, it's just like water, some almond milk and a bunch of fruit that might have nutrients and some fiber and things, but it's also just a straight shot of sugar. And it's the first thing that you're putting in your system. That's going to cause an insulin spike, set the inflammation cascade, and you're going to be chasing that sugar all day.
Starting point is 00:41:14 Those are little things that affect acne and aging and just how you feel in general. So having a clean plant-based protein, like I'm a fan of hemp protein because it has the most fiber and it has some omegas. Throwing that into that smoothie now makes it a totally different meal with a different effect on your body. Other things that help your skin inside and out for acne and aging are things like organic bone broth because it has like collagen, it has some protein, it helps with your gut lining. I mean, everyone needs to be rebuilding their gut. Like our guts have been through a lot, especially in America. So yeah, little changes like that. Kaylee's got a bunch more hacks too.
Starting point is 00:41:47 I love all the hacks. Those are some big ones for sure. I'm trying to think of additional ones, but I really like what Danielle said, just making it fun. Once you find your favorite new alternatives to everything, you're good. Then your kitchen's restocked. You get excited about it. you no longer have the framework of I have to give up so much I'm losing so much, you have new foods to look forward to you. I think that alternatives is such a good subject. It's like what the skinny confidential is based on. I like literally remember thinking of this when I was like, what should I modify at Rubio's? And I think like a thing that we've actually never talked about on the podcast is like dairy alternatives, like getting really granular. For instance, and you guys,
Starting point is 00:42:22 I would love for you to share your brands. Like I like malk almond milk. I think if you look the ingredients on almond milk. You'd be shocked what's in there. Like, I think it's important to really dive into what you're eating. Michael and I, and I got him on this, and very happy about this, are obsessed with Julina yogurt. It's C-U-L-I-N-A. It's a coconut. It's a coconut one. Yeah. My friend Brent told me about, and they have, like, they have a vanilla and a plain one that is so good. I'm a huge fan of coconut colt. Do you guys have any go-to dairy products that you would swap out? I think that a lot of people are trying to swap dairy. Yeah. So Trader Joe, Trader Joe's is national, right? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Trader Joe's is your wingman.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Like all of their non-dairy cheeses are bomb. I was just there. And I like to try all of them because I'm assuming, based on past experiences, if I try four, I'm going to like one. But literally Trader Joe's. I used to go to Trader Joe's when I was in high school and couldn't afford lunch. Just go to like the sampler. That's what my mom and I used to do at Costco on Sundays. Her price club is probably. Yeah. I think my dad's still. Yeah. Your dad does. I go, you want to go to lunch? His dad and he like go to Costco. I love it. Love it. But no, Trader toast has a ton of really good quality, non-dairy or just dairy alternatives and non-dairy things.
Starting point is 00:43:37 All their cheeses are bomb. They have a bunch of like cashew-based yogurt. They have the almond milk. Like they have everything. It's just an easy place to go start making these healthy changes. Boy, oh boy, am I ready for a cocktail? That shouldn't surprise you. It's been a long time.
Starting point is 00:43:57 I cannot wait to have an Ashland Hard Seltzer. I am going to be in tightening and toning mode after this baby. And one of the things I'm really focused on is being mindful of what I'm putting in my mouth, along with what I'm drinking. And Ashland hard seltzer is amazing because it's gluten-free, malt-free, zero carbs, sugar-free, no fat, and 100 calories. You heard that right, 100 calories for an entire can. So what I'm going to do when I want to have a cocktail is I'll take an Ashland,
Starting point is 00:44:28 probably the ginger peach. I'll pour it over ice in like a, a big. big wine glass. I'll do a pixie straw, maybe some herbs, and I'll just enjoy every sip, knowing that it's sugar-free, carve-free, and 100 calories. Very into this. They have all different kinds of flavors. They have lavender lemonade, orange pineapple. They also have this watermelon one. The cans are so cute and beautiful. You should know they're clean, crafted hard seltzer, which is super important. And we actually had the founder on the podcast and got to pick his brain. It's the number one selling independent hard seltzer brand in California. Super cool. You can follow
Starting point is 00:45:06 them on Instagram at Ashland Hard Seltzer. They have a beautiful feed and beautiful cocktails. And you can also use their cocktails too to make like an apparel sprits. Like you could use one of their seltzers and make your own super low calorie skinny sprits. How fun. Drink one for me. Cheers. I'm a huge fan of almond and coconut as alternative. So Malk right here, like one of my favorite three trees. again, a really clean one that doesn't have all the additional gums, sugars, all the stuff in it. I like sticking to more almond and coconut rather than oat because oat typically has rapeseed in it, which is canola oil. So if you turn around a lot of like oat milks are just not good anymore, which is really sad because it was like the best tasting milk alternative for a while.
Starting point is 00:45:54 So anything almond and coconut base and then just double checking, it doesn't have those inflammatory oils in it as well. I'm going to change the subject. Okay. What do you guys think are some good things that came out of you having acne. Oh my gosh. Everything we love in our life. Yeah. It makes us be able to help other people's lives so much more.
Starting point is 00:46:17 So there's a lot of people that come to us that are just so frustrated and debilitated with their health. They need help. They're feeling bloated. They're feeling tired. They're struggling with acne. And they don't know what to do. And when we hear people's life story and are just able to give them three simple changes,
Starting point is 00:46:32 they DM us or reach back out a few weeks later saying how much their life. was changed, their skin cleared up, they're sleeping better, their bloating went down. That's what does it. Like, it's the impact that we've made in people's lives by our difficult journey. And that's that led us to figuring out everything to now compile all this education to make it really easy for other people because you'll just get so overwhelmed. They hear from a lot of influencers, the Google searching, they're being fed so much information, so much misinformation. And we've simplified it to just get to the root cause of what actually causes acne and what actually accelerates aging, give that information of people to make those changes and people's lives
Starting point is 00:47:10 are changed. And I think that's our, like, that's our favorite part of it. I love like the success stories. People I love when they send us their pictures being like, my skin cleared up in a few weeks. Like all I did was remove vitamin D and zinc from my daily routine and or just lowered my dosage and my skin cleared up. And that's the best. You're giving people their confidence back. Yeah. Yeah. Show up differently. Yeah. A million other ways that shows up. Yeah. is just like good skin. For sure. Your confidence affects your ability to be intimate with other people.
Starting point is 00:47:36 Like the quality of our relationships, our friendships, our friendships, relationship with yourself, your friendships, your intimate partner. Those are the things that keep you healthy and happy and that matter most in our life. And when you don't like how you look and you have the shame that comes with having acne, it changes your frequency and your energy. And if it affects all of your relationships, whether or not you even agree that it should, you're like, no, I'm better than my skin. But if you're breaking out, like, on your back, you're not, you're going to want to turn the lights down when you're having sex.
Starting point is 00:48:05 You might not even want to have sex. Like, it can change the way you have to plan your outfits ahead of time. Like, when I had acne, it was like cystic on my chest. I had to call ahead to restaurants to see what the lighting was like. I was wearing turtlenex in summer. Like, it affected my whole life in a really, really negative way. So when people are able, you know, they message us and they're like, thank you so much. I finally want to be more intimate with my boyfriend.
Starting point is 00:48:28 or I finally like can look at myself in the mirror for more than five seconds. Like that means the world to me because I know that those little changes affect how you exist in this world. Especially in a world that we're living in now where if you have a pimple, you face tune it out. Yeah. And so like it looks like everyone has clear, perfect skin. And listen, I've said this a lot.
Starting point is 00:48:51 Like I find the best light. I find the best angle. Like it's not like like we, I feel like we all do. do. I don't want to take pictures in horrible lighting. On top of that, though, if you're struggling with your skin and you go on social media and it's like flawless skin everywhere and everyone's swiping to use the Paris filter, it's almost harder than what it was maybe 20 years ago. Because then people forget that a lot of people have skin issues and are struggling with it. And they think it makes people feel even more
Starting point is 00:49:21 alone. And feeling alone just depletes your confidence in every level and doesn't allow you to connect with people the way you would want to connect with that. And it can interfere with your confidence and how, and the way that you think. Because normally, if you're a high functioning, high, you know, high achieving type person, you put your energy into figuring something out and you get results. You want to figure out how to change your body at the gym? Great. You can figure that out. It's not that hard. You know what I mean? So you try to figure something out. You want results. You can usually easily get it and whatever else you're pursuing. But if you don't have the right information, you can be spending hundreds of dollars on facials that are making your skin worse. You can be buying all the
Starting point is 00:49:56 vitamins to help your immune system, it's making your skin worse. You can be trying, you know, the new thing that an influencer posted that said it cleared their acne in three days or whatever bullshit. You can be trying that. You're like, this is going to be the one. I can feel it. And then it makes it worse. Or it's better for a week and then it gets worse again and you don't know why. So that mind fuck is like the worst thing ever. And like that's the thing that we love helping people with. I've always been very careful on my platform about acne because I've never had it. Thank you for that. And I can't talk about something I've never had.
Starting point is 00:50:29 I can invite people on the platform to talk about it, but acne has always been one that is very sensitive. It's also because we talked about this earlier, but there's more layers to acne. It's not just having hyperpigmentation. I can cover that with makeup. There's a lot of different things that are going on. You talked about the bedroom. You talked about all the other things.
Starting point is 00:50:47 The only thing that I will say and correct me if I'm wrong is that if I had acne, I think, I think I would like ice on my face. You are damn right. Okay. I just use this. And I have a rash right now that's so bad and it like burns. And I would think acne would like burn and be like almost rashy. So the ice roller or ice like go get it for free in your refrigerator or go dunk your face
Starting point is 00:51:12 in ice or go cryotherapy or cold plunge. I would think that helps fight the inflammation. Is that right? Our number one tip when someone has a cystic acne. And that's the one that is like the basically like the bubble under your skin. Again, it doesn't come to a head. It's that huge bump. It's really painful.
Starting point is 00:51:28 The number one tip to get rid of it is ice packet. Get that inflammation down. But make sure it's clean, right? You don't go grab your ice roller that's next to your husband's way waffles. And roll your face as you're eating your scrambled eggs. Like, get rid of the scrambled eggs. Get rid of your husband's way waffle. I got two questions because it sounds, the more and more I'm digesting this and thinking about it,
Starting point is 00:51:53 It sounds like there's a ton of different reasons that somebody could be experienced. And your reason may not be the same as yours or the same as mine. Is there a specific test, whether it's a blood test or hormone test that you recommend people do to get more information? Or is it not testing? I love this question. So skip Western medicine. Like if you have like a Kaiser or an HMO or a run-of-the-mill dermatologist, they are not going to make you healthier. You're going to go.
Starting point is 00:52:18 They're going to spend around 12 minutes with you. They're going to their whole time there. There's going to be seeing what prescription they can match you with. and they're going to be they're going to put you on antibiotics, maybe on birth control again. When those fail, they're going to put you on spiroinolactone. When that fails, they're going to put you on acutane. They'll probably prescribe a bunch of topical shit that's just going to burn the hell out of your skin, make you age faster, and destroy your skin barrier.
Starting point is 00:52:39 That's the typical dermatologist rot. They might run some blood work. Usually people come back normal and they don't get any other information. But what's normal is because there's like, normal means you're not diseased. Yeah, right? And it's based on most Americans who most Americans are not very healthy, right? So you don't get the information. testosterone and it's like you're normal, but the spectrum is here and it's like, how cool?
Starting point is 00:52:56 It's only looking for a disease that is the spectrum. Yeah. And then there's no, then if you want to go even deeper, like, oh, okay, so I'm at the 80% percent percentile of normal. What does that really mean? They don't know. They're not going to tell you. And they're not going to talk about vitamins or anything else that could be affecting
Starting point is 00:53:09 your hormones. Anyway, my rant of that is over. Find a naturopath or a really talented acupuncturist or actually like the unsung heroes of medicine. They can run lab work too. And they focus on lymphatic system, digestion, and liver, and Lauren is loving this right now. So lymphatic system doesn't even get addressed in a typical Western office.
Starting point is 00:53:32 Most people don't even really know what it is, and it's the biggest instrument of our immune system. It is relative to digestion, hormones, detoxification pathways, and all the things that actually matter, especially for acne, because if things aren't being filtered out properly, it's going to come out your skin. So when you go to someone who actually knows to shine the light on that topic and look at it and knows what herbs will actually naturally balance your hormones and knows that, okay, you're not breaking down your protein all the way. You need some digestive enzymes. You
Starting point is 00:54:01 don't need to acutane. You need digestive enzymes. People who know to think about the body holistically like that with an emphasis on digestion, those are the people that are going to help you the most. This is why I ask this question because I think that within this conversation, there's so many routes that you can, and it's going to be different routes for different people. But if blanketly across the board, if you could wave a wand and say these three things you're going to add to your diet or your routine, because we did the what you would remove. What are the three things you would add, blanketly? Hot water with lemon. Anytime you go to a restaurant, you sit down, server comes to greet you, asks you what kind of water you want. Let it roll off your tongue.
Starting point is 00:54:36 Hot water with a lot of lemons. Let that roll off your tongue. It's rolling off my tongue. I already even do that every single day. And why? Because hot water with lemon activates your digestion, which is fantastic because you're sitting there you're about to eat. So you want to activate your own digestive juices, Anything that is tangy or sour is going to stimulate the digestive juices so you can break down your own food better. It also helps with the liver and just helps with the lymphatic system. And it's just a really good thing to have. You can do it in the morning too.
Starting point is 00:55:04 But if you have it be one of those habits every time you go out to eat, that's going to make a massive impact when you extrapolate that in your life. Other things are apple cider vinegar. Huge fan of that. Some people can't really take the taste of it, but they have some really high quality capsules and things too. and also eating more like herbs and spicy greens. Like I add arugula to everything and add fresh herbs to everything. They're cleansing. They're anti-parasitic.
Starting point is 00:55:28 And they just have a lot of nutrients that like we should be getting, but that we kind of don't because of overfarming or because of just traditional Western diet. If you go to my Instagram, you can see a post that I just did about Vince Camuto. Okay. It's a one-stop shop for wardrobe staples and occasion pieces that makes every moment a chance to express your personal style. I went on and I got to pick out a couple of things. Specifically, you can see what I picked out. If you go to this Instagram, I'm like squatting. And I have this bag that's reversible. And it's like the perfect office bag, kind of like a briefcase. And then I'm also wearing these open-toed shoes that
Starting point is 00:56:11 actually make my swollen feet look not swollen, which is amazing. And they're really comfortable. They're kind of like a wedge. So go check that out. But also, while you're on their website, you got to check out their woven strap mule shoes. I talked about this on the last episode. They have all different colors. These are super classic and simple. And I actually went back to the brand and asked them to send me a couple different ones of these. I got the cool mint. I also got the water lily. And then they just have a plain black. But these strap mules are really, really good. And I know everyone who's listening will love these because I feel like this is one of those shoes that just flatters everyone. The strap mules would look amazing with like a dress, leggings. You could like style them down, style them up. I feel like
Starting point is 00:56:58 everyone needs to go check these out. They're definitely up your alley. When I was styling myself the other day in my body suit, because body suits are about all I can wear. Their woven strap mules made me feel invincible. Like the outfit looked so much cuter and I just felt more confident. You were going to head to vincamudo.com slash podcast and use promo code podcast for 20% off your next purchase. Starting point is 00:57:35 Use promo code podcast for 20% off your next purchase. Symbiotica makes a really good apple cider vinegar capsule now. That's perfect. Don't mean to brag, but we had rosemary time tenderloin last night. There we go. See, we used herbs last night. I know that that's like weird. We also used garlic and shallots.
Starting point is 00:57:57 I am the classic case of just learning now about Eastern medicine and just getting my diet. How have you been married to me? Well, because I'm stubborn, right? You know a learns on their own timeline. He's talking to me about the lymphatic system yesterday. And I'm like, are you? Okay. I got one of those.
Starting point is 00:58:14 But it took me. I'm just, I think, well, the reason I'm asking is you guys are evolved wellness practitioners, all three of you. For most people, I'll say the majority of people, they're not. And maybe, and we grew up in the era of mass. production and mass commercial marketing. When I met you, you literally would roll out of bed, brush your teeth with crest, slap herbal essence on your face. And that was about it. But I think I am probably in the majority of people that grew up that way, right? Like you get like,
Starting point is 00:58:43 I remember tricks and like smacks and like smacks and no smacks. Smacks are good actually. Gushers. Gushers. Gushers. All these things. But our parents and this is, I don't think it's the fault of a lot of our parents is like they they were in that era of mass production and mass commercial marketing, right? Whereas like you see these things on TV. It was the era of brands, right? Like brands dominated the bread dials. They dominated the eggs. They dominated the cereals we ate, the meats, all of these things. Even like the chick, you know, like Oscar Meyer became like it was everywhere. And so I don't blame our parents. It was just we're in a moment in time when human civilization figured out mass production and mass marketing and sold health to people. I did get in a fight with your dad when he
Starting point is 00:59:21 told me that Diet Coke was healthier than fresh squeezed orange juice. But that's another story for another way. I want to know what are some practices that you both do in the morning and night in your routine that are wellnessy. Okay. So I love biohacking sleep. I think sleep is the foundation of our health. So I have a chili pad, but I'm now being convinced to get a sleep eight. I don't know which one you guys have. But basically, it temperature controls your bed. So I set it to 65 degrees. It tricks your body into falling asleep really quickly and keeps you in that deep sleep and REM cycle. I love it. And I get the best night's sleep.
Starting point is 00:59:58 I also have an air purifier in my room too. That's made the biggest difference in my energy when I wake up in the morning. So those are my two ways I like biohack sleep. So I wake up feeling really refreshed. When I wake up in the morning, I wait to have caffeine. I don't always have caffeine. I don't need it. I like the ritual of coffee and the ritual of caffeine.
Starting point is 01:00:16 So I'll wait a little bit later in the day. But first thing in the morning, I will have water with lemon and so. I'm a huge fan of element recently, but if I don't, if I like run out of element, I just do a pinch of real salt and some lemon. It gives you electrolytes for the day. And then the sodium helps you actually absorb the water. So you're properly absorbing the water and you're not feeling bloated after drinking a ton of water.
Starting point is 01:00:36 I then have my green juice after that. My new favorite is athletic greens right now because I think it's the best, most comprehensive multivitamin you could ever take. I could talk about it forever. I'm obsessed. I'm with you. I take it over there. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:48 Yeah. It's made a huge, like a huge difference in my energy. levels in my focus. I don't feel like I need caffeine when I have it. And then I start my work day. I take my supplements when I eat my first meal of the day, which is typically like around 11. I eat when I get hungry. And I'm really big on focusing on digestion and gut health. Like what you were saying, Michael, like the things that people should really focus on with how overwhelmed they can be with transitioning their health is focusing on digestion and gut health. I think that's like the framework to our entire whole body health. So I take a spore-based probiotic.
Starting point is 01:01:20 Michael didn't know what the gut was until a week ago, but go on. It controls hormones. It controls our brain function, everything. So, spore-based probiotic. I take digestive enzymes. Which brand? Do you guys mention that? What's brand of digestive enzymes?
Starting point is 01:01:35 Just Thrive. Yeah. No, that's for probiotics. For digestive enzymes. There's a couple different ones. I like the digest gold is a really good one. Does Just Drive make an enzyme? We love their probiotic, obviously.
Starting point is 01:01:47 They don't. No. They only make a D3 and K2 and then a probiotics. Their products are great. It's insane. They totally should. They should make one. I will buy it in two seconds.
Starting point is 01:01:58 But I think they are hands down the best probiotic because 99% of the probiotics exist out there, especially if it's refrigerated, doesn't work. Like you think about if something has to be refrigerated, it's never going to survive in your body with the temperature. And so the spore base actually like plants, basically like plant seeds in your gut to teach your gut how to grow good bacteria and rebalance it rather than dumping probiotic in seeing if it works, if it doesn't work. So spore-based is key.
Starting point is 01:02:24 It's why so many people take probiotics and be like, it doesn't work. It's because a lot of them don't work. Digestive enzymes helps break down food. As we get older, we lose stomach acid and digestive enzymes. So as we get older, we just struggle to break down food. And that's how we're going to get more brain function, mood stabilization, so our hormones are going to be balanced. So digestion is insanely important.
Starting point is 01:02:44 So those are my main two vitamins. I have like some fun ones that I take. But now that I'm on athletic greens, like I don't need a lot of them. because it has a ton in it. And then I have my magnesium at night. And then we actually, it's releasing in two weeks. We just launched a vitamin. It rivals Accutane.
Starting point is 01:03:00 You guys can take a look at it. But it's basically, yeah, it's healthy people. Vitamin A, it's a lot of anti-inflammatory, liver support, digestion support. And so it's basically a natural version of acutane to help people with acne. But it also has glutathione, some other skin brightening aspects in it too. So for the last, I don't know, six months, we've been developing this for almost two years, Congratulations. It looks amazing. Thank you. Been taking it consistently. I'm just, I'm so psyched. We're coming out with this because it's going to be a game changer. But it has a good combination of other supplements. You might like break apart in different forms. When I have clients at the San Diego Acne Clinic where I know something's going on internally, I send them do a couple of blood work people that I've had in my orbit for a while and they are masters. People come back with the same few issues all the time. People aren't breaking down their protein very well or they're not breaking down fats very well. Why?
Starting point is 01:03:50 You know, protein is the hardest thing to break down anyway. A lot of us don't chew our food very well. And we eat a ton of protein in one sitting. So, like, that's, I mean, to actually sit and chew your food feels weird. Like, most people don't do that. But it creates a lot of digestive waste in the body. This is, like, such a timely episode. You don't even know today.
Starting point is 01:04:08 Like, for Michael. He took his A and threw it down his throat and didn't even chew it. And then finish with some way. Just drop the meat down the throat. No, just kidding. No, but listen, I think that I fall in the majority of, of people, right? And what I like about doing this show is I always tell people, I learn at the same time as people, maybe a little earlier, because I hear it before it's released. But that's
Starting point is 01:04:29 why we do this, right? And I think it's easy for people that have been practicing this way for a while. But if you're, I'm thinking about the person that's like, okay, now I want to get my gut under control. I want to get my acting in control. I don't know where to start. This is a place for them to start. Right? A thousand percent. People throw the kitchen sink at them. Like, it's so overwhelming. the fuck. Well, and what I really want people to understand is it's never just one thing. If you see an ad that's like, this is the one thing that carried McName, red fucking flag. It is never just one thing. Our bodies are symphonies of a lot of things going on.
Starting point is 01:05:00 And if you throw one thing out of whack, it's going to affect another thing. Like, holistic approach is super, super important. I mean, I would say someone's listening to this and like, okay, we've just heard a lot of information and I still don't know where to start. Our website has a learning center that gives you like the bullet points of everything we just said. So the vitamins that can cause acne by messing with your hormones in excess, and we tell you the dosages to watch out for. The foods that if you're having too much of them, they're going to break you out. We tell you where on your face they're going to break you out. So you'll be able to just go like checklist motion and just know if that is your trigger.
Starting point is 01:05:32 And you'll be able to tell, like if eggs are your trigger, it's going to take three weeks to then to get out of your system. Give it three weeks off. You're going to know. If it's dairy, it's going to break you out on your chin where you'd have a goatee. Should be down in 48 hours after you stop having dairy. and if you have dairy again, it'll show up the next day. Like, we give people that information so that they can be their own guide and check their own triggers and know for sure what matters for them because everyone is a little bit different
Starting point is 01:05:54 in what they can get away with with their diet. So that information, just know the information and then test it yourself. Like, I want everyone to test things for themselves rather than just like listen blindly because that is how you truly learn is by testing and realizing it for yourself. Name three wellness practices that you do in the morning. Five minute journal. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:13 It always asks you for three things that you're grateful for. Kaylee's usually number one on that list. Oh, you guys are so cute. I love her. So five-minute journal for sure. Waking up, I like to wake up to music. How you wake up is important. I used to wake up to an alarm all the time,
Starting point is 01:06:28 and it would like send me through the five stages of grief every morning. Naval Ravel Kahn said on Tim Ferriss's podcast, the worst thing you can do to set the tone of your day's wake up, wake up to an alarm. It's terrible. Lauren, hold on. Hold on. Just wait right there.
Starting point is 01:06:42 Do you know that you decided to get a new puppy while you're pregnant, while we have a two-year-old? I keep it fun. But do you know, I don't have the luxury of waking up to an alarm. I just get up when the dog and the house goes into chaos. I know, but you were an alarm person. So I love this tip. Keep going off the tangent. I like to biohack the sleep as well.
Starting point is 01:07:06 I haven't gotten chili pad yet, but I make sure it's like pretty cold in my place when I go to bed because heat just destroys sleep for a lot of us. And then in the morning, immediately, first thing, I liked, my kick right now is chlorophyll water. So some type of water, whether it's like, I have this drink called Early Bird that's like a coffee alternative. It has like al-thene and aschwaganda in it. So I'll do that with a heat, like a liter of water. But an organic green apple in the morning is like the best. It wakes you up because it's tangy. You can feel it working in your tummy.
Starting point is 01:07:34 I can't do an apple crunch. I can't do an apple crunch. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Really? Do not give that tip. Take that tip. Take that tip. I'm going to edit it out. If you start crunching on a goddamn apple in the morning, I am going to lose my shit.
Starting point is 01:07:50 You give Zaza chopped apples every morning. She's down there crunching on an apple. It's one of the low points in our marriage when I'm eating the apples. No more apples. Okay. I can see how that would be annoying. Now that I'm imagining someone else doing it. Oh. Yeah. Okay. So blackberries. I like the apples. Blackberries. And you can take your just thrive probiotic with it. So it's like, boom, you've already done three things that are amazing for yourself in the garage. I think you're married to a fucking nut that you can't have apples. So I guess.
Starting point is 01:08:15 Okay. Your product line, you guys have built an incredible product line. This is, I think this is going to be, not that it already isn't, but huge in the acne community. You said not one size fits all. If someone is struggling with acne, is there something that you would turn them towards in this product line? Because there's a lot of products.
Starting point is 01:08:33 Yes. Number one, before you buy anything from anyone, check for poor cloggers. Poor clogging ingredients are those fillers? that when you flip to the back of a moisturizer or sunscreen or makeup, you look at the ingredient deck and it's all these chemistry words that you've never seen before and that you can't pronounce and you're just like, I don't want to look at this. Got to look at that.
Starting point is 01:08:51 Copy and paste that into, we have a search function that we paid thousands of dollars in development for, where you can copy and paste an ingredient deck to see if there's poor cloggers in it. If there's anything in your makeup, your sunscreen, whatever, that has a poor clogger, like isopropyl myristaid or ethylxyl palmitate or random things that the average consumer doesn't know about. If those are in your products, you're going to keep breaking out. step one is to check and remove all poor cloggers.
Starting point is 01:09:14 And check skincare, makeup, and hair conditioner. Yeah. Those are the three things. Yeah. A lot of back acne, especially if it's on the upper back, is from hair conditioner. Big time. Just poor cloggers and hair conditioner. That's a great tip.
Starting point is 01:09:25 And another maybe ignorant question, if you're not struggling with acne, you can still use these products. Oh, for sure. So the whole line is anti-aging and anti-acne with no toxins, and it's equally effective for both. Okay. Yeah. So thank you for allowing us to clarify that.
Starting point is 01:09:39 Because I was going to, I'm trying to see what I was going to pick a product out of all this that I think I'm going to like the best. And again, I don't have acne. So maybe I'm not the perfect client. It would definitely be the powdered sun. I would say number two for you because you struggle with hyperpigmentation, melasma is the clarity. So, yep, the yellow one. So that is a game changer. Both of someone struggling with acne. Yep, it is the best. Struggling with acne or wrinkles or hyperpigmentation. Okay. I do. I love Mandela. I might need the bounce back, learn. The bounce back is our, especially after this episode. You need the purple eye. Do you have one that revives you both on the dead? That's bounce back. No bounce back has been labeled as our quote, no Botox serum. So it's either a great alternative or it extends the life if you are getting Botox.
Starting point is 01:10:27 So it helps extend it in between visits. But if you aren't getting Botox, it helps just smooth out all the wrinkles as peptides that are lifting, hydrating stem cells that are going to be stimulating any scoffer. It's just going to help with scar reversal and wrinkle reversal. Yeah, Lauren, you're pregnant mama Sita right now. You can't be doing Botox. I know. It's made for you.
Starting point is 01:10:46 It's hard. It's hard. Yep. So bounce back. That's your pregnancy alternative. Okay. I'm going to try that. And I also really want to just shout out this sunscreen and I'll tell you why.
Starting point is 01:10:56 There's nothing worse than when I'm driving. Like today I was going on a walk. And I'm driving in the car and I'm trying to put on my sunscreen. But then it's getting on the steering wheel. Yep. And then I pick my phone up to look at the map. and then it gets on my phone. And then it's like all over.
Starting point is 01:11:11 And it's with this situation that I have going on being pregnant, it's like I'm rolling around with like white chalky sunscreen. So the reason that I like this sunscreen that you guys have is it's on a brush. And it's like a powder. And it's very malleable in the sense that you can just take it to go. Right. It's meant to be kept in your car because it won't melt. I keep sunscreens in my car all the time.
Starting point is 01:11:33 They'll melt. Right. And also I feel like I would use this on my hands too. Hands, chest. Okay. Yeah. And you're dust off on your shoulders too, if your shoulders are really exposed during your walks. So you would say the bounce back serum, let's, I want, I don't like.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Distinction. Men and women can use this product. Yes. The line is unisex. Okay. So if we were to recommend our audience sounds, because I like to, I like to be very specific. It sounds like we would do the sunny side sunscreen, which is the one that I just talked about that's on a brush.
Starting point is 01:12:02 The clarity serum, which is a mandelic acid. I write about mandelic in my book. I'm obsessed with mandelic. You'll love this one because it's mandelic acid that we cocktailed vitamin C with because it actually travels down deeper because it's with an acid. And then there's also turmeric in it that calms the skin. I love it. And then the bounce back serum. Yep. And are your products pregnancy safe? You can't use these together though, or you can. So anyone can use clarity. So the thing, pro tip here, the thing with an acid, any AHA, BHA, anything with an acid, whether it's mandelic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, anything with an acid, that goes on bare skin. It's going to, eat whatever it's touching. So you want it to eat the surface layer of dead skin. If you put something like a moisturizer on and then try to put an acid on, it's going to eat your
Starting point is 01:12:45 moisturizer. So an acid always goes on bare skin and the trick is to leave it alone for 10 minutes. The low pH is why it's being effective. It's how it's doing its work is the low pH. The moment you put something else on, it neutralizes it and it stops working. So a lot of people are spending so much money on exfolience and they're not getting any results because no one told them to let it wait in between that and their next step. I've been doing everything. There's so much to do. There is so much to do.
Starting point is 01:13:12 Does everyone feel like that? It's like... I'm texting Katie and I'm telling her to get ready to have my office law. I'm going there and cry after this episode for the rest of the day. No, there is a lot to do. It's like wait 10 minutes and then, I don't know, wait 10 minutes. Drink your quarter of water right now. You don't have to do anything.
Starting point is 01:13:25 You don't have to wait in between other steps though. Yeah. Like at all. Brush your teeth. Like put it on. Brush your teeth. Do it all over else you need. Go make your bedtime tea.
Starting point is 01:13:32 Go take your bedtime supplements. By the time you're done with that, finish your routine. Go in the garage and. Not in the day. Yeah, correct. Okay. Let's say a night. You guys are amazing.
Starting point is 01:13:41 Pimp yourself out. Do we have a code for the audience and can we do a giveaway? Absolutely. Okay. Tell us where to find you first. Okay. So you can find us at clearstem skincare.com. And then feel free to head over to our Instagram.
Starting point is 01:13:53 We are very active in the DMs with answering questions. So come meet us over there. And then you guys can use code TSC for 15% off. And I love the idea of a giveaway.
